Game day: USC

By Stephen Tsai on August 29, 2013

After 271 days of pretending there are other entertainment options, we can all finally say … “It’s game day, baby!” Traffic? The early start? Who cares? If I  had to read one more story about UH’s budget woes, I was going to stick a fork in my eye. (Here’s my UH budget-woes story: After plopping down $5,000 for my son’s tuition for this semester, we had to spend more for books and something called an iClicker. The gizmo serves as […]

A walk-through is planned for this afternoon. After that, they head to KCC, where the student chefs (thanks to a grant from Bank of Hawaii, Chevron […]

Expansion plans

By Stephen Tsai on August 27, 2013

UH’s fall semester began yesterday, meaning roster limits were lifted. The Rainbow Warriors are now trying to finalize how to fill out the roster. The goal is to have an active roster of 110 players. There were 99 players participating in training camp. Receivers Billy Ray Stutzmann and Cecil Doe and tight end Josh Long were activated. Transfers Quinton Pedroza (Utah) and Jeremy Castro (UCLA) are redshirts, but they’re practicing and count toward the 110. Ray Mulitalo a fullback from […]

By Stephen Tsai on August 26, 2013

At the end of today’s practice, three Rainbow Warriors received good news: Breakfast would be free. Slotback Donnie King, running back Marcus Langkilde and defensive end Ikaika Cavaco-Amoy were awarded football scholarships today. That means 1) No more Sallie Mae. 2) No double work shifts for their parents. 3) They are invited to eat training-table meals with other teammates on scholarships. “It’s nice when we can help guys who have worked hard,” head coach Norm Chow. King, Langkilde and Cavaco-Amoy […]

Setting the rotation

By Stephen Tsai on August 24, 2013

In preparation for the opener, the Rainbow Warriors narrowed the rotation at each of the positions. The rotations should hold through the first game, but it also does not mean that some players wearing the scout team’s yellow won’t be in white (offense) or black (defense) in the following week’s practices. Some of the position scouts also might play on special teams against USC. • No surprise, but for this week, the quarterbacks are Taylor Graham, Sean Schroeder and Jeremy […]

Stutzmann returns

By Stephen Tsai on August 23, 2013

After missing the entire training camp because of concussion, wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann received medical clearance and resumed training yesterday. The Rainbow Warriors had only conditioning drills and a brief walk-through session yesterday afternoon. There were no footballs used during the session. Stutzmann suffered the concussion in a one-car accident two days before the start of training camp. His car was totaled. “It’s good to be back to business,” Stutzmann said. Stutzmann said he kept fit lifting weights and […]

Did Rainbow Warrior fans enjoy the weekend? Uh … what? Yep, with the opener a week away, the football calendar has been re-set.
