If I had to read one more story about UH’s budget woes, I was going to stick a fork in my eye. (Here’s my UH budget-woes story: After plopping down $5,000 for my son’s tuition for this semester, we had to spend more for books and something called an iClicker. The gizmo serves as an electronic monitor, like Lindsay Lohan’s ankle bracelet, and reports a student’s attendance in each class, thus replacing roll call’s “Here.”)
But I digress, because it’s game day.

I’d overplay Lee in the beginning, and harass the crap outta him without getting a flag. Push, nudge, yank, step on toe, talk mad crap, everything… just to try to get in his head. Even if he shrugs it off… it don’t matter, cuz it will have already worked (as he then will have to focus on ignoring it, which in effect will have already made its impact). Make the other guys beat us, not Lee.
I’d also bring the heat from via the RH-side of the line, not his backside. We WANT the 2-headed qb circus to be forced to react, even if it’s just half a second sooner. If we bring from the blindside, it’ll only yield results if we get there. Bring from the front, so the QB can see it; which can still have an effect even if we don’t actually hit him. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS ISN’T DONE MORE FREQUENTLY.
On offense, we HAVE to get rid of the ball quickly. Playcalling must be on-point so as to not overly expose our QB to SC’s rush. We gotta keep um honest, via dump passes, screens (although I’m not a fan of the WR screen), crossing patterns, pick routes, etc. Straight up streak routes and deep post or flag patterns will probably be negated because of SC’s athletes.
Like it or not, we have to also try to run the ball. Not only because of the phrase, “there are 3 things that can happen when you throw the ball, and 2 of them are bad,” but it does and will shorten the game, keep the ball out of SC’s hands, and lord willing if it’s working, I believe we have some young, hungry, and talented horses to carry the rock.
In conclusion, I expect a competitive game, and expect to see our boys ballin out. Our defense should be good enough to slow SC down enough to prevent a blowout. But for me, the real questions are: Has our OL improved to allow TG to throw the ball and our RB’s to run it? Is the freak show ready to live up to the self-proclaimed ‘freak’ nickname? Can our young but talented RB’s help protect TG, while grinding out crucial first downs without coughing up the rock? Lastly, can we win or at least neutralize the Special Teams game, being that we have new snappers and a new punter, and Lee will probably be returning KO’s?

The iClickers help instructors get instant feedback from students to find out if students understand the materials covered in class or not. The instructors can use it to run a quick survey to find out student’s preferences. It can also be used to run a quick quiz or test.
Stephen, the next time you’ve run into Coach Chow/Ben Jay, please persuade them to include community college students/faculty for student/faculty discount for games instead of just the UH Manoa, etc. UH Hilo, UH West Oahu, and all of the community colleges are part of the UH system and probably can help fill up the stadium and cheer for the home team!

The USC fans will wear an iClicker wear the “sun don’t shine” and get zapped everytime they play their lousy fight song! The community colleges might have a greater fan base than UH, lots of local kids. Fill the stadium with students and sell more PPV to the homebodies and service establishments. Do the hotels carry Warrior football on PPV?

We should keep this game in perspective. No one expects us to beat USC, or OSU for that matter.
This is a rebuilding year. You can argue, but it is rebuilding still. We don’t have enough seasoned talent under this new system yet. We’re getting there though.
Year 3 is the more critical year for Chow and staff. If we don’t make some serious noise by year 3…well…
So that’s why Taylor Graham needs to start now. Even if he takes lumps against ranked Pac 12 teams, it’s good for experience. The whole team needs more experience for that matter. Work out the bugs. Get some stats before conference games.
Then come MWC schedule, we will be surprisingly (to some, but not to me) much more competitive.
So, treat these first two games as great experience for the boys and nothing else. It’s a no-lose scenario for UH. We’re not expected to win either game, but the experience will be awesome for our guys going into the MWC season this year. Next year, even better.
And just maybe things come together this year and we start the noise making in year 2 of Chow Time. Now that would be sweet!

My thoughts: 1) USC is terrible. god, they are awful. they’re also gonna get pounded by oregon. 2) I’m giving the UH defense the benefit of the doubt and saying that they’re pretty decent/good. Although USC looked like crap, so idk how much of it was the defense playing well or USC stinking up aloha stadium. 3) But nothing stank worse than the UH offense. The o-line is still awful. the receivers are slow and can’t get separation and keep dropping passes. Taylor Graham seems to like throwing into triple coverage a lot and makes bad decisions, but he throws a REALLY pretty deep ball… that the receivers drop.
All in all, it’s not so much that UH lost, because losses happen. it’s that the product that’s being put out on the field is absolutely atrocious.

I think most of us saw what we expected to see. A JR QB who hasn’t played a game since high school (add on a redshirt year) just started his first game against a top 25 defense and took a lickin.
I am hopeful for his future, but let’s face it . . . he may have several more games like that before his decision making hits game speed.
I was actually a bit disappointed in the oline. I wasn’t expecting that much pressure. I thought they’d improved. I had flashbacks of Schroeder back there. Graham does not need that kind of beating week in and week out. I am hoping it is just because USC’s defensive front is just that good.

I think Hawaii’s defense is legit. You can’t blame them for falling apart late, as they practically played almost the entire first half by themselves. I haven’t looked it up yet, but I’m curious to see UH’s time of possession stats. Especially in the first half.
People are forgetting USC defensive 7 is supposed to be one of the best in the country. I hope our offense plays better because it wont matter how good our Defense plays if our Offense doesn’t do ANYTHING with the ball a lot of missed opportunities on offense overthrown and underthrown balls, dropped passes, lack of time in the pocket at times.

Most of the scores were off of UH mistakes. their offense is a train wreck. the receivers should actually do something before they start giving themselves cute nicknames. Defense was a marvelous thing to watch. We dominated the line and I think it surprised a lot of people, USC included.
The Offense was simply god awful. No way to sugarcoat it nor do I want to. When one shouts out the question “Who exactly are you throwing to?” more than a few times, you know there is a lot of work to be done.

The search for the Holy Grail continues. 4 interceptions are unacceptable. At least 2 other potential USC interceptions were dropped. The UH defense deserved better. UH also got lucky when Marquise Lee dropped a sure TD, although the Trojans still end up scoring the TD. I wasn’t impressed with USC’s offensive execution for the most part. UH offensive line still having problems protecting the QB. I don’t know why Chow doesn’t have a hot read to counter the blitz. I thought UH should have changed QB after the 3rd interception. Guess Chow is still stubborn. Graham’s rust and lack of playing experience and poor accuracy are obvious. UH lost this one, USC didn’t win it. It was a game that could have been. Also, some questionable coaching decisions on play calling.
Of course usc’s defensive line is that good, we definitely didn’t play a cupcake team.

So if Graham is rusty, don’t you want to leave him in there to take his lumps and shake the rust? Keep it in perspective guys. YES, the defense looked good. They were really physical against a USC offense. And YES, USC’s offense wasn’t executing very well, but give the D some credit for maybe having something to do with that.
Like I said before, this may be a long year for Graham. But I won’t give up on him just yet. I’d like to see how we look in conference. I think there is potential. Umm, let’s not forget that our receiving core is very young as well.

I agree we shouldn’t give up on Graham yet. We just need him and the receiving corp to work harder at getting on the same page. He also needs to stop staring down his targets and go through his progressions a little more. Still a lot of potential. Looking forward to him hitting that potential.

The the biggest thing for me, is that now graham is getting experienced. he’s got a game under his belt against a pac12 team. now, let’s see what he does as he takes on another pac 12 team.
realistically, i 100% believe all QBs need a certain level of confidence in their line and receivers. if a QB looks indecisive, the lack of confidence in the line and receivers can be part of the reason why there is indecisiveness

USC is awful. they better lube up when they play oregon because oregon is gonna give it to them.. well, you know.
I think graham has the tools necessary to learn from this and progress as a player. he was making some godawful decisions but he’s never played a down of college football in his life. he did have his moments, and he throws a really nice deep ball. but the o-line and the receivers. god. remember back when june jones was still coaching and their offense actually executed? third and long wasn’t a situation where everyone held their breath to see if the offense could actually convert. it was “third and thirteen? no problem!”
props to the defense though. they played very well for most of the game.

Defense Great, Graham awful… End of Story…. No excuses.. Everyone predicted Hawaii win… So no making excuses for Graham’s inexperience after the fact… He’s a junior… no time to develop at this point. Didn’t even see a wide open Gant for easy TD…. then on his 4th pick, didn’t see a wide open Moleni in the flat and instead forced it to a WR with 3 defenders on him…
No leadership, not smart, not accurate. And I was on 10 rows up from Warriors sidelines so I know for a fact he showed no leadership and none of his teammates even went over to talk to him during game.

Was I the only one impressed with Kirkwood? Made two great leaping catches and almost had another but dropped it. Can see why they were so high on him despite only playing football one year in high school. Dare I say our version of Megatron? If they can get him the ball that is.
Besides Graham’s rust, the running game was pathetic. And the receivers dropped passes. Graham had four picks, but one was not his fault. That cannot happen if Hawaii expects to win. It’s going to be another long season if Chow does not fix the offense (and I am not holding my breath). This year’s version of the offense looks a lot like last year’s.

Was at the game seemed like the USC secondary had more drops than our receivers did. Graham’s inexperience really showed tonight. It seemed the action on the field was happening too quick for him. He couldn’t process what he was seeing quick enough. He couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm.
I wouldn’t write him off on tonight’s performance. Rolo is an example of a QB with ability who had trouble early on adjusting to the speed of the game. Hopefully with experience the game will slow down for him. He’ll see the field better process the action quicker and make better reads and throws.
Defense was amazing! Did you see how the crowd reacted to their play? It was like the stadium attendance doubled with the level of crowd noise!
Special teams was on it too!
Now, if we could just get the Offense in sync…
