Corvallis, Ore., averages 159 sunny days each year. Today is not one of them. The forecast calls for rain when the Rainbow Warriors conduct a 45-minute, walk-through session at Reser Stadium this afternoon. The Warriors arrived in Portland last night. They will make the 90-minute drive to Corvallis today. After the walk-through, they will go to Eugene, where they will spend the night. * * * * *

Making the list

By Stephen Tsai on September 5, 2013

Running back Joey Iosefa and defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii are on the 64-player travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Oregon State. Both did not play in the USC game while recovering from injuries. Dejon Allen, who moved from defensive tackle to the offensive line, also is on the travel roster. Of note, the Rainbow Warriors will take four quarterbacks (Ikaika Woolsey is traveling primarily as a holder) and two kickers (Joe Uglietto is insurance for Tyler Hadden). The Warriors […]

Iosefa cleared to play; Rasmussen joins

By Stephen Tsai on September 4, 2013

Running back Joey Iosefa yesterday received medical clearance to play in Saturday’s road game against Oregon State. Iosefa will be included on the 64-player travel roster. Still, it has not been determined what role, if any, Iosefa will have in that non-conference game. Iosefa has not participated in contact drills since suffering a fractured foot in late July. He recently was allowed to participate in position drills with the other running backs. Defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii, linebacker Lance Williams and […]

Mad skills

By Stephen Tsai on September 3, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors are experimenting with different lineups on the offensive line, with Leo Koloamatangi and David Griffin expected to have expanded roles for the road game against Oregon State. Their specific duties have yet to be determined. Griffin transferred from Mesa Community College in January. Koloamatangi, a second-year freshman, redshirted in 2012. Both are noted for their long arms, effective punches and agile footwork. UH head coach Norm Chow said another asset is both “are angry.” Translation: Both could […]

What holiday?

The Rainbow Warriors will spend Labor Day in meetings and participating in a 90-minute practice. * * * * * The Captains’ Council has named defensive end Tavita Woodard, linebacker Brenden Daley and receiver/returner Chris Gant as this week’s captains. This is the second week Woodard and Daley were chosen; three captains are selected for every game. * * * * * The coaches also are working on crafting the 64-player travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Oregon State. […]

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on September 1, 2013

Because of the quirk in the schedule — the opener was this past Thursday — the Rainbow Warriors treated yesterday as a “Monday,” which meant meetings, video studies and 45 minutes of  field work that involved mostly conditioning drills. (They did not practice on Friday, which was treated as a “Sunday,” and won’t practice today, because, well, it’s really Sunday and the NCAA requires a mandatory day off each week.) One of the running back drills involved quick cuts. It […]

On the mend

By Stephen Tsai on August 31, 2013

Thanks to modern medicine and really, really hard work, we’ve been told there is a good chance running back Joey Iosefa and defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii will be available for this coming week’s road game against Oregon State. Iosefa has not participated in contact drills since suffering a fracture to his left foot in late July. Tulimasealii is recovering from a torn MCL in his right knee. Every practice, both are in the “Pit” — the area where injured players, […]

Graham’s still the 1

By Stephen Tsai on August 30, 2013

Let’s get straight to it: UH will stick with Taylor Graham as the starting quarterback. According to head coach Norm Chow, that’s based on evaluations of every practice and the potential Graham showed last night. But four interceptions are four interceptions, and whatever the reason — miscommunications, errant throws, tipped passes or USC’s athletic defenders — the offense’s mulligan has been spent. Still, the defense and special teams played well, and, even, the offense had some moments. A team supposedly […]
