Making the list

Running back Joey Iosefa and defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii are on the 64-player travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Oregon State.

Both did not play in the USC game while recovering from injuries.

Dejon Allen, who moved from defensive tackle to the offensive line, also is on the travel roster.

Of note, the Rainbow Warriors will take four quarterbacks (Ikaika Woolsey is traveling primarily as a holder) and two kickers (Joe Uglietto is insurance for Tyler Hadden).

The Warriors depart this afternoon.

I hope the additions to the o-line can make a difference. Does not have to be spectacular, but an improved run game could be a big help.

  10. lava September 5, 2013 6:24 am

Sounds like a wasteful travel roster. I’d rather have guys play 110% and rotate every few plays. Maybe some of those guys burried in the depth chart are the real stars. Remember James Fenderson?

  11. Haleakala September 5, 2013 6:27 am

That is a nice article in the SA about the Shoji family and of Dave’s accomplishments,

I’m excited to see Dejon play. On the bright side on o-line for run plays he can seek and destroy defenders. Joey is my favorite player, hope to see you back in action. Blocking low and up for the RB on pass-pro, reminds me getting knocked to my butt by a stocky RB doing just that when my eyes got big rushing the QB. Team, safe travels to Corvallis. Represent.

  16. kapakahi September 5, 2013 6:53 am

Fisiiahi no longer a soft UH commit……but supposedly now a solid OSU commit…..

    http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/football/kaisers-fisiiahi-headed-to-oregon-state/

This weekend’s contest is more than just one game……but affects local recruiting as well. Last year OSU beat out UH for Failauga…..and apparently now has landed Fisiiahi.

  17. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 6:58 am

    17. Good fit for him… Fullback not a high priority for recruiting in my eyes and I don’t see him as a D1 LB so I think it works out perfect for him..

  21. ai-eee-soos September 5, 2013 7:55 am

    4 QB’s – I hope Coach give reps to 2 & 3. Game experience for the backups.

  22. Derek September 5, 2013 8:06 am

Maybe Miano didn’t have the pull to steer his star to the home team. Plus, you don’t know if he can qualify to be admitted in college. To me, the best offensive player in the state this year is Larry Tuileta. Would be nice to get Kanawai Noa, but he’s only a junior. The priority in recruiting is obvious, the offensive line.

I thought the name Famous Jameis was perfect. It’s the best Heisman campaign for Jameis Winston. Johnny Football didn’t hurt Manziel.

  23. tommui September 5, 2013 8:19 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Insurance is not a bad thing.

  24. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 8:27 am

    23. Tuileta def the highest priority to get locally….. I think he has the IT factor… But only time will tell. Stubblefield is going to be a very good slot so I hope the coaches can convince him too. Harding will be gone soon and I think Stubblefield is the perfect slot..

Fitou is going to be a nice college fullback at OSU I think. Impact wise, I just don’t think we needed that. We need to find some tough O linemen. Havent really gotten a chance to see many quality 2014 O linemen yet. Gifford might be a gem if he converts because he plays nasty on D and has the quickness and length to transfer over to Offensive side if needed.

  25. Derek September 5, 2013 8:31 am

Very nice story about Marcus Mariota. And to think that he backed up Jeremy Higgins. Amazing. Would Darnell Arceneaux be considered as an asst. coach for Chow. There’s a Utah connection there too.

  26. Boolakanka September 5, 2013 8:33 am

23-Aloha all! The overt passby over Rich Miano, I suspect at least , was also the fact that he did not have a “terminal degree”. Many in academia, especially in administration, have profound concerns that sports programs have disparate objectives to the institutions. Thus, the requirement of a terminal degree dictates that a head coach have the highest degree in area, or at very minimum as masters degree.

Noa has yet to live up to last season’s stats because defenses have been able to key on him and (where has this happened before?) last season’s OL is gone and Tuileta has had more pressure and less time to find his receivers.

One to watch this year and beyond is the Soph. WR upon Kalaepohaku. That guy is a burner…

We’ll see what happens when the Puns face that tough KS-K DLine in a couple of weeks. That’ll be a good game.

  40. Buffoman September 5, 2013 10:00 am

Looking at the verbal commits on Rainbowsportsnetwork, we appear to have some terrific local talent choosing to come and help build the team. That is great that young men want to stay and play as a choice. I hope they remain committed to their verbals, but like all things in the universe, you never know what will happen between now and the signing date. Whatever, these will still be terrific young men, hopefully they be Rainbow Warriors.

  41. Leron September 5, 2013 10:02 am

4 QBs….Graham to start, Schroeder to backup, Higgins to signal in plays, Woolsey to hold on kicks.

what better way to get the freshman in the game?

  50. al September 5, 2013 10:57 am

dejon on travel roster is just common sense…could also enter at dline if need be. better than using a backup qb.

  57. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 11:29 am

Besides UH vs Oregon St… The Mountain West game of the week is Utah St at Air Force. Should be an interesting matchup as these two teams have very little history together. Utah St is making it’s MWC debut and Air Force still runs their flex-option.

Air Force’s defense is shaky but Utah St doesn’t have much experience defending Air Force’s offense, so I think Air Force will score some points. Plus, Utah St may be due for a mental letdown after a tough emotional road win vs rival Utah.

Air Force is a pretty big home underdog. I like big home underdogs… Take Air Force and the (+10) points.

  58. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 11:36 am

Amusing line that I just saw… SDSU is (+29.5) at Ohio St.

After getting KO’d by Eastern Illinois, SDSU now goes into the Horseshoe vs The Ohio St.

I don’t think SDSU is as bad as they looked, and it’s awfully hard to put money on Ohio St to cover a big spread after Buffalo moved the ball on them (that was my lone losing ticket last week) easier than expected.

I’m not betting on this one, but if you feel inclined, lean towards SDSU to cover. Can’t support huge home favorites in week 2 after they failed to cover week 1 vs a weaker team.

  59. dannyp September 5, 2013 11:43 am

    59

Sorry but the MWC game of the week has got to be SJSU vs Stanford. Arguably the top team in the MWC taking on a top 5 opponent. Good chance of an upset…

  60. Old School Dave September 5, 2013 11:47 am

Algebra II has tripped up many a potential UH recruit from what I understand. Local boys need to take care of business in the classroom if they want to have a chance at a free education. Coaches need to also get after those who have that potential.

  61. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 11:59 am

South Carolina State is getting 52 points from Clemson.

Take Clemson 1st half as long as it’s less than 28. Huge spreads are hard to bet on for the full game because you never know how the 2nd/3rd string players will perform.

I’m liking Oregon (-24.5). I know I just said I like big home underdogs in an earlier post, but Oregon is a machine. Plus with 64-man travelling rosters, the 1st/2nd string players will go deeper into the game. Virginia had a hard time moving the ball vs an unathletic BYU defense minus Ziggy Ansah (drafted to NFL). They only got 226yds of total offense. Virginia gave up 362yds to BYU even with Taysom Hill throwing 13-40.

  62. Jeezy33 September 5, 2013 12:01 pm

    61… +1

Also, I’m pretty sure fuha called Ohio st to cover easily while game was still on 2nd quarter… Huge gambling no no there to announce a win before half time

  63. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 12:12 pm

61… SJSU’s program is riding pretty high right now, but they aren’t in the same ballpark as Stanford right now. Several people are predicting Stanford will knock off Oregon again this year. Stanford led the Pac 12 in most major defensive stats. They still have the best defense in the Pac 12.

SJSU had a great year last year, but keep in mind the WAC was horrific beyond SJSU and La Tech and the WAC no longer exists in football. They did play Stanford tough last year, but Stanford still hadn’t worked out Andrew Luck’s successor at that point and looked ugly at QB for the first few weeks.

The spread is 26.5 for a reason, but I think SJSU is a good bet to cover because this is Stanford’s 1st game of the year, and they really don’t have a “tough” game until Sept 21. I think Stanford will look a little ragged but still wins comfortably but fails to cover.

  64. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 12:13 pm

60.. I think OSU covers easily versus SDSU. You got a SDSU team traveling to eastern time zone after losing easily to a FCS school… SDSU runs a conventional West Coast offense with a mobile but inaccurate QB. Ohio St. is going to feast defensively and usually good for 1-2 defensive and ST touchdowns against weak opponents that can’t throw the ball effectively.

Braxton Miller is Braxton Miller and will get all the yards he wants. I got Ohio St. winning this one 42-3… Dingwell completed 42% of his passes against Eastern Illinois and 4 picks. Good luck trying to throw the ball against OSU. I expect OSU to create 4 turnovers and convert into TDs somehow.

  65. 808bowler September 5, 2013 12:14 pm

    Hey everyone,

I believe tulieta us a solid commit to Hawaii for football and volleyball.

  66. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 12:15 pm

San Jose St loss to Stanford by 3 last year and beat La Tech, BYU, and Bowling Green. Wac may not be good but San Jose St beat and competed against good teams… Bowling Green just destroyed a good Tulsa team…

  67. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 12:18 pm

64, yup… Ohio St was my one loser during week one. They looked great through the first few series, but Buffalo, to their credit, moved the ball better than expected. I did jinx OSU. Lesson learned

I went 4-1 on opening week, so it was a good week. UH cashed in for me twice (to cover and under the total). Washington St won for me. Clemson was my other winner as I am a huge Mark Richt hater in big games. He’s a terrific recruiter, but a terrible game prep coach. I do know there are tens of thousands of Georgia fans who feel that way.

  68. kapakahi September 5, 2013 12:19 pm

    #25,

Stubblefield is more fast than quick…..i.e., long strides. Would seem to project more outside at WR than inside at SB.

  69. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 12:20 pm

Clemson was my play of the day…. Got them +3000 winning national title… and Ole miss +10000… Not sure if either will win but both my dark horse teams coming into the year… Shocked Ole Miss isn’t ranked… Explosive of an offense as there is in college football..

  70. kapakahi September 5, 2013 12:21 pm

    #37,

Noga is solid but seems like gonna have to bulk up some more to improve durability at the next level…..’cuz always seems to get dinged up during ILH play against Kamehameha and/or Punahou.

  71. jeezy33 September 5, 2013 12:22 pm

70… I think what makes him a slot is his sure hands and route running ability. Salas wasn’t exactly quick either but his routes were on point and caught everything over the middle… I am comfortable with Kemp and Kirkwood outside. Well see though… Good to know we have good options regardless.

  72. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 12:22 pm

Sorry, made a mistake in the Utah St vs Utah result… Utah actually won that game… Too many Utahs in one place.

More reason for me to take Air Force and the points.

  73. kapakahi September 5, 2013 12:23 pm

    #40,

McKinley RB/LB Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta would be a nice power back.

  74. kapakahi September 5, 2013 12:27 pm

    #39,

Crusader soph WR Drew Kobayashi looks to have the dimensions and skills to become a ’16 prospect to keep an eye on.

  75. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 12:32 pm

jeezy, you got Clemson +3000? That’s awesome. I didn’t have time to go over the championship odds before opening week.

You’re right about Ole Miss being undervalued, but Ole Miss’s defense is a bit overrated… talented, but overrated. That and the questions around HC Nutt’s coaching ability are why they are ranked kinda low. Their #1 DE recruit is an unbelievable talent but Vandy was able to work around him. At least you dodged a bullet in week one. In the BCS era, if any team starts outside the top 10, it’s one loss and their done for national championship contention.

It’s basically going to Alabama vs _______ for the Title game. Their schedule is a joke this year and being in the top 10 and in the SEC, if they lose to Texas A&M… that means nothing as they will still be top 5 or 6 in the polls. When you have a coach who’s pissed off about a fairly dominant road win vs a quality opponent, you’re in good shape as a program.

  76. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 12:45 pm

jeezy, you could probably sell your Clemson ticket right now for premium value after their win vs Georgia.

vegasinsider’s updated odds now have Clemson as 18/1 to win BCS title.

That gets me thinking that someone could sell live betting tickets like you would sell stock option contracts. +3000 is basically 30/1, so you could potentially sell your ticket for up to 40% premium to what you paid. For example, let’s assume you paid $100 to win $3000 preseason That same $100 now only wins $1800. To win $3000 with the new odds, you now have to bet $166.67.

Realistically, I could see somebody buying your $100 (+3000) ticket for $140-$150. That’s a 40-50% profit and you no longer bear any risk.

    Interesting……

  77. d1shima September 5, 2013 12:48 pm

Those Noga genes will certainly point to lotsa upside for bulking up but as far as “getting dinged”, not sure that work in the weight room would necessarily translate into preventing concussions and pulled hammy’s…

I guess it couldn’t hurt though.

Jeezy, pretty good picks. I like Clemson and Ole Miss too. But I think Clemson’s Achilles, if you will, is South Carolina. The Gamecocks have a better defense and have had Clemson’s number lately. The Ole Ball Coach ain’t too shappy also. Ole Miss is full of young talent. Maybe they are still too young and a year or 2 away, but if they progress quickly I see them getting better and better with each game and maybe by the end of the season they will be there. It will be hard to go undefeated however.

Louisville has a schedule like when Hawaii went undefeated in 2007. It’s still too early, but by midseason we shall see who the contenders and pretenders are. Good luck.

  86. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 1:35 pm

    Doing my trolling….

Betting Quote of the day: “Hawaii is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs the Pac-12 and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.”

    ATS predictions:

CappersPicksBlog – Hawaii and under total

    Jason Green, PredictEm – Hawaii

    OddsShark scoring models – Hawaii

Jimmy Boyd, BoydsBets – early lean on Hawaii

    GamblersParadise – Oregon St

    PicksandParlays – Hawaii

David Gilsan, Maboot – Oregon St

A couple of the pro Hawaii picks mentioned that the betting public and media are over-bashing USC’s QBs for not covering and not giving UH”s defense enough credit for playing well in pass defense. That’s the angle where pro-Hawaii bettors are using and that seems to make the most sense. UH is getting almost no credit for making USC look bad on offense.

The pro Oregon St betters are using the same justification for picking USC. Most of their justification relies on 2012 stats and still think UH is terrible in all phases. None of the pro Beaves picks mentioned that USC could only manage 30 points (24 of which off of 4 UH turnovers) and with many drives starting in Hawaii territory.

I checked out two Oregon St blogs and their fan base has no clue that UH’s defense is pretty solid.

  87. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 1:41 pm

jeezy, correct on the Ole Miss WR talent.

The key to you cashing in the big one is QB Bo Wallace… Talented but wreckless. He threw a ton of picks last year. Ole Miss will go as far as Wallace takes them.

  90. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 2:03 pm

89… I’m a small time sports gambler. Maybe 2 at the most. I have a small bankroll budgeted, so I need to stretch it as far as I can. I only like to make 3-5 bets per week. Last year, I was running at such a horrible rate to start the year, I quit betting after week 5. Probably the worst year I’ve ever had.

I like college basketball the best because you can get an edge over the odds makers because there are just too many teams for them to accurately follow. Hawaii tends to fly under the radar, so you can get big advantage over odds makers early in the football season, but they get tougher after a few weeks and they get to see everybody play.

Because we all are closer to the program than the odds makers, we should have an advantage over the odds makers regarding Hawaii. At this point I still see UH covering. The only way I see Oregon St covering is if UH’s offense plays like last week. Given that OSU gave up 620yds to 1AA talent with 7 returning starters on defense gives me confidence UH will look better and stay on the field longer.

    91. I’m very high on Wallace… He can make the most amazing play as a dual threat QB but like you said, prone to mistakes… I am hoping this is his year…. For now, I’ll just keep riding them while the spread plays in their favor… Although I will say they got lucky with Vandy… Vandy always tough at home early in the season though… Almost beat South Carolina last year I think.

  93. Boolakanaka September 5, 2013 2:24 pm

80 & 81 Inversion IPA out of Bend, Oregon. Also Mannys Pale Ale, great, but usually only available in Seattle.

CORVALLIS — Oregon State receiver Brandin Cooks told KEZI Sports reporter Stephen Nelson on Wednesday that the Beavers have lots to prove on Saturday, and when asked specifically about Hawaii, Cooks didn’t hesitate. “It’s over,” he said. “No chance.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/09/oregon_state_football_brandin_4.html

Who is this Brandin Cooks, and is he better than Marquise Lee? Game over before it’s started? Still need to show up and play the game (even if you’re on Phil Steele’s preseason PAC-12 1st team). I’m guessing that he probably had the same confidence/misguided swagger swimming around in his head before the Eastern Washington game too…

Re: Tuileta – believe he is a strong commit to UH for football and volleyball. Charlie Wade is hoping he brings Micah Ma’a and Evan Enriquez with him. IIRC, the 3 have stated that they wanted to play together.

Hey… when I used to drink, I used to enjoy them brown Henry Weinhard bottles.

  137. madeinhawaii September 5, 2013 5:31 pm

I don’t think I’ve had a beer or a drop of hard liquor in 11 years! It’s not because I had to quit… but for some reason, I just got tired of it. I used to love my scotch on the rocks. I still have a full bottle of VSOP 20 y/o Courvoisier … must be closer to 40 years now.. makes nice shelf decoration…

  138. 3-Prong September 5, 2013 6:10 pm

  142. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 7:30 pm

LOL… Just checked my fantasy football team to see if anybody was playing tonight and discovered that my opponent has Manning and D. Thomas. Yeah, I’m losing 84-18 already.

  143. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 7:36 pm

d1shima… RE: beer… Buy anything from Dogfish Head Brewery. Best brewery in America right now, especially if your like pale ales. They also a a bunch of seasonal special brews that are usually amazing.

Speaking of which, I’m out of beer…

  144. Former UH Athlete September 5, 2013 7:41 pm

As mentioned earlier… I also endorse anything from Deschutes Brewery. I had a 1/6 keg of Black Butte Porter at my baby’s baby shower.

In case nobody has heard yet, kegs at baby showers is a new trend I am strongly endorsing… My college friend started it early 2013, then I did at our shower. It gives the husbands/boyfriends (HABs) something fun to do while the ladies do whatever the hell they do at showers.

  145. jm2375 (iPad) September 5, 2013 8:04 pm

  149. Buffoman September 5, 2013 8:31 pm

Ever had Anchor Steam beer? Don’t see it at too many places but had it a lot with friends in NorCal. Liked it.

  150. kama krab September 5, 2013 9:01 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Had a little time so figure say hi.

Anyway in regards to Stubs, I’m figuring he will probably get drafted and will probably have a tough decision to make over the summer. Had plenty scouts looking at him last season. Oh and if he does not get drafted high enough trying to get the boy for stay home. But if the Longhorns come a calling he is gone. We see

  151. kama krab September 5, 2013 9:08 pm

    Oh Sparks,

Now that kid would have been a solid contributor to the warrior O-Line. Kid has solid feet, great center of gravity, and pretty solid quickness off the ball oh and braddah can maul when he needs to.

  152. d1shima September 5, 2013 9:11 pm

    Howzit kama krab! Long time…

  153. d1shima September 5, 2013 9:12 pm

  156. kev-1 September 5, 2013 10:25 pm

Jeezy . . . looks like we’ll finally get to see Griffin get some significant time. After reading the SA today, it seems like he was struggling with some strength issues. After reading your comments about his expectations (in previous discussions), I am excited to see how he does. Let’s see if he can do what he was brought in to do.

  157. tommui September 5, 2013 10:46 pm

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY STRETCH!

  158. al September 6, 2013 12:23 am
