Ahead game

By Stephen Tsai on September 14, 2013

Hawaii football fans should have reasons to be optimistic following yesterday’s abbreviated version of the Scout Bowl. Running back Diocemy Saint Juste, who started as a way to get live reps, opened with a 65-yard run for a touchdown. It confirmed what everybody already knew: Saint Juste has that special second-gear burst that portends a solid future. Ikaika Woolsey, who was 9 of 13 for 143 yards, also is progressing well. Tight end Josh Long showed he is 100 percent. […]

Anonymous donors

By Stephen Tsai on September 13, 2013

The athletic director should be commended for detailing an ambitious plan to increase fund-raising and improve the athletic department’s standing. What also should be appreciated are the “anonymous donors” who have made contributions that cannot be found on bottom lines, building plaques or in state-of-UH speeches. These donors don’t write big checks. But they give something more valuable: Time. Three claps for: • The coaches who began working even before they were officially on the payroll because athletic schedules aren’t […]

Home again

By Stephen Tsai on September 12, 2013

Kory Rasmussen is practicing as a defensive tackle. But there are discussions he might  be better suited as an offensive lineman. Whatever his eventual destination, Rasmussen, for now, is happy. “It’s good to be home,” said Rasmussen, a 2012 Kamehameha Schools graduate. Rasmussen transferred to UH this summer after being dismissed from the Colorado football team following an off-field dispute. “There were some things at Colorado, and it ended up not being for me,” Rasmussen said. There were key factors […]

Demo

By Stephen Tsai on September 11, 2013

Chris “Demo” Demarest’s arms will flail, his body will gyrate as if a centipede were crawling on his back, and his voice will reach jet-takeoff pitch. And that’s how he is when he discusses his favorite restaurant. What makes him “Demo” — what makes him a good special-teams coordinator — is the passion that he brings. While his face might turn red and his language blue, there’s no malice. And that’s the irony of Demarest’s one-game suspension for his animated […]

Demo, OSU player suspended

By Stephen Tsai on September 10, 2013

Special teams coordinator Chris “Demo” Demarest and OSU running back Jovan Stevenson received suspensions following video reviews of a second-quarter incident in this past Saturday’s game in Corvallis, Ore. The Mountain West suspended Demarest for UH’s Sept. 21 road game against Nevada. (UH has a bye this weekend.) He is allowed to coach in practices. The Pac-12 suspended Stevenson for the first half of OSU’s game against Utah this Saturday. Stevenson was found to have violated the “targeting” rule when […]

Mild Monday

By Stephen Tsai on September 9, 2013

On Saturday, the Rainbow Warriors had an off day against Oregon State. Today, they have a day off. (The Warriors have a bye this weekend.) When they resume with a light practice tomorrow, wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann and offensive lineman Dejon Allen will get opportunities to earn extended playing time. Stutzmann, who missed all of training camp because of a concussion suffered in a July car accident, was not on the 66-player travel roster this past weekend. Allen rotated […]

A good bye

By Stephen Tsai on September 8, 2013

In most cases, it probably would be better for a team that lost its first two games to keep playing. The best way to get over a loss is to play the next game. But this coming week’s bye probably is needed to heal the ailing. Running back Joey Iosefa, defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii and free safety Marrell Jcakson were on the 66-player travel roster, but they weren’t going to play against Oregon State. Now linebacker Brenden Daley and  safety […]

Game day: Oregon State

By Stephen Tsai on September 7, 2013

It all begins with the road version of the (Rainbow) Warrior Walk: At the turn, game captains Brenden Daley, Taylor Graham, Tavita Woodard and Chris Gant encourage teammates and coaches: * * * * * Congrats to Dave Shoji and all of his assistant coaches and players through the years. It was a collective effort to get to 1,107. * * * * * Back to Oregon. At the Wild Duck establishment, the specialty is beer-cheese soup. Say it fast, […]
