“The AD Show”

By Stephen Tsai on May 13, 2014

Those questioning the high interest in UH sports should note that Ben Jay is probably the only athletic director with a radio show. The second segment of “The AD Show” will be broadcast on ESPN 1420 AM beginning at 6 p.m. Jay will answer questions from co-host Bobby Curran and listeners. *  * * * * Lost in the recent fiasco is that the late Reggie Carter was a wonderful person. Dan Hale, a former UH and Chaminade player, granted […]

Finals

By Stephen Tsai on May 12, 2014

It’s final-exam week, which means: > USC quarterback Max Wittek, who is planning to transfer, should be soon indicating his next school. Wittek needs to earn a degree to transfer  without restrictions. USC’s final-exam period is through Wednesday, with the school’s spring commencement ceremony on Friday. A Pac-12 defensive back also should be making his decision soon. His school already has completed its spring semester. > This is the last week as UH students for two of the football team’s […]

Mother’s Day; Meatoga to Browns

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2014

Much love to all the mothers. * * * * * Former UH defensive lineman Vaughn Meatoga said he has accepted an invitation to participate in the Cleveland Browns’ rookie mini-camp this coming weekend. He said he will receive his itinerary tomorrow. Meatoga had signed with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League. But when a former Lion decided to return, B.C. canceled Meatoga’s contract. Meatoga then received a call from former UH assistant coach Tony Tuioti, who works […]

Fare game

By Stephen Tsai on May 9, 2014

What the heck is the Rainbow Warrior basketball team doing in an outrigger canoe? It starts with this analogy: When Save a Baby Seal asks for donations, you know the money will go to, well, saving baby seals (or at least one baby seal). The problem with past Save UH Sports drives is many potential donors  wondered how the money would be used specifically. That’s what happens when there are so many stories about debt, constructions over-runs and contract extensions. But in […]

Draft day, baby!

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2014

Other than “Las Vegas,” no other two-word combo is deserving of being suffixed with “baby” and an exclamation point than “draft day.” Football reporting is a ratio of 1:352 — one game story to 352 stories about other things, such as match-ups, injuries, players’ parents. training routines, and so forth. Draft day — actually, the three days of the draft — is the ultimate wrap-up to the past college football season. It is the best and most detailed reporting of […]

Add it to the bill

Joe Blow is planning a business trip to the mainland, in which he will leave on a red-eye flight on Monday night, arrive on Tuesday morning, then depart for the return trip on Thursday morning. The company approves his travel budget of $1,160 — $700 for the round-trip airfare; $100 for the rental car; $240 for the hotel ($120 per day), and $120 for food ($20 per meal). As it turns out, Mr. Blow has to pay $25 per way […]

Aloha means goodbye and hello

By Stephen Tsai on May 6, 2014

According to new Kaiser head coach Cameron Higgins, former UH defensive back Richard Torres will be joining the Cougars as the defensive coordinator and DB coach. It is a three-part move that should benefit Kaiser, Torres and the Rainbow Warriors. Kaiser is a getting a one-time, self-made player with coaching experience (as a Kahuku assistant and UH graduate assistant). Torres will be free to pursue job opportunities. And when his term as GA expires this month, Torres will be allowed […]
