“The AD Show”

Those questioning the high interest in UH sports should note that Ben Jay is probably the only athletic director with a radio show.

The second segment of “The AD Show” will be broadcast on ESPN 1420 AM beginning at 6 p.m. Jay will answer questions from co-host Bobby Curran and listeners.

*  * * * *

Lost in the recent fiasco is that the late Reggie Carter was a wonderful person. Dan Hale, a former UH and Chaminade player, granted us permission to print his memory of Carter:

“Reggie Carter made a HUGE impression on me when I was in 7th grade. He came to Punahou and was shooting on middle courts around lunch time. He was dunking and putting on quite a show, and eventually almost the whole 7th and 8th grade were gathered around the court watching him play. After a while, he pulled me out of the crowd to play 1-on-1. The crowd was screaming, and it was amazing. Long story short, I won. Obviously, he let me win, but he did such a good job disguising it I felt like I was a hero to my school mates who stormed the court. I kinda knew what he had done, and when I looked at him after, he had the biggest smile in the world watching me get mobbed. When he left, he gave me a hug and said ‘good job’ and signed my folder: ‘To the real star basketball player.’ I will never forget him or his generosity to me. I followed his career and was always rooting for him. It was a short interaction, but a reflection on his selfless character.”

Why is a person from Buffalo called a Buffalonian instead of a Buffalo?

  15. whitey May 13, 2014 6:47 am

cause it is not nice to call a Buffalorian a Bufo.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Great remembrance of Reggie Carter by Dan Hale.

I remember Dan – he was my daughter’s partner coming in the baccalaureate ceremony years ago. It was kinda hard to photograph as he was about 6’3″ or so and my daughter was 5’3″!

  21. whitey May 13, 2014 6:55 am

    #19 Whitey:

“Buff is a pale, yellowish brown color. It is related to the tan group and is often times considered an earth tone.”

The uniform of the Continental Army was buff and blue – maybe that is the origins for the Punahou colors.

I thought you were going up to Alaska to endanger the salmon again? 🙂

  23. boolakanaka May 13, 2014 6:57 am

Nice story. And a shout out to Dan and his lovely wife Chaika, whose family originally hails from Moloka’i.

  24. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2014 7:00 am

    No. 22:
OK, that explains the origin of Punahou’s school colors.
“Charlie Brown’s Christmas” explains the alma mater’s melody.

  25. whitey May 13, 2014 7:01 am

The only athletic director with a radio show.one that the majority of UH fans hardly listen to. The host is one of the most disliked sports personalities in Hawai`i for starters and the AD isn’t very popular either.

Callers are screened, only BJ fans ( all 10 of them ) allowed to talk. 🙂

“Maryland, My Maryland” is the official state song of the U.S. state of Maryland. The song is set to the tune of “Lauriger Horatius” — better known as the tune of “O Tannenbaum” (O Christmas Tree)”

Besides Punahou, Maryknoll uses the same tune. (The old ones are the best)

  41. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2014 9:35 am

Maryknoll and Punahou share the same tune?

  42. NorthShoreFan May 13, 2014 9:36 am

Very interesting chatter today…Reggie Carter…class gentleman…hope we can find more like him for Gib.

  43. tommui May 13, 2014 9:47 am

#41 – unless Maryknoll changed its Alma Mater, it is the same as Punahou except the lyrics are different.

“To you our local hearts we pray, Maryknoll, our Maryknoll …”
    “O’ahu-a Oahu-a, Punahou, our Punahou”

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Dan Hale is one of the really good guys. Knew him in college, when he jokingly insisted his name be pronounced Hah-lay, as Hawaiians would. He and a few of the other UH Basketball players used to come up to KS Kapalama to eat dinner and play hoops with our intermediate boarders. The kids loved those events, two UH hoopsters and three kids per team against another team with the same kind of rosters. The UH B-Ball player friends I had in college were great guys and always ready to give back.

RIP Reggie – another of the great ones.

  46. Andrew May 13, 2014 10:05 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #46
Andrew — Good question that just started me recalling the words. I still remember–and our 50th reunion is coming up. We sang it at the end of football games in Honolulu Stadium… with great pride if we won, with sad inspiration if we lost.

…of course, there are other memories of the time we’d like to forget. 🙄

  52. Andrew May 13, 2014 10:32 am

I only remember mine (PCHS) because we sang and played it for band all the damn time, well that and it was only ten years ago..haha

  53. oldtimer808 May 13, 2014 10:37 am

#51 you must have graduated HS in 1964 which is the same as me…man we’re getting young again

  54. oldtimer808 May 13, 2014 10:38 am

Remember for some get really younger because back to diapers.

  55. papajoe2 May 13, 2014 10:42 am

Andrew, we just sang our alma mater Saturday night when a bunch of classmates got together for a going away party for 3 of our classmates. Around 15/20 people from school and a few of them completely forgot the words. Maybe they too old (Waipahu, class of ’71) or because they cut out of school when we were learning it.

  56. oldtimer808 May 13, 2014 10:43 am

Ok I admit to not remembering my alma mater. The alma mater was written by my classmate.
We were a new school at the time.

  57. Andrew May 13, 2014 10:50 am

What about UH’s one? Growing up my Dad always made us stay after the game until the band finished playing the alma mater. That was pretty rough though through the ’98 season and the ’12 season.

  58. boolakanaka May 13, 2014 10:52 am

    56: Here you go oldtimer808:

On, on, through the years, we strive to meet our goals,
and Honor ‘Aiea High, Our Alma Mater dear.
Hail! Hail! to thee, ‘Aiea. Thy name we’ll proudly bear.
We’ll Cherish ‘Aiea High, where memories linger on.

anyone care to remember UH-Manoa alma mater?

In green Manoa valley, our alma mater stands
Where mountain winds and showers caress her fertile land
the flag of freedom beckons above her shining walls
    to larger truth and service
    Our alma mater calls

guess Hawaii will always be a “high school town” – if so, why keep caring about UH football program? of UH at all?

and, I always cringe when they introduce someone to sing the Star Spangle Banner and Hawaii Pono i cause you know the singer will miss words to one or both – what an embarrassment when the UH Music Dept prof almost always forgets a word or more for Hawaii pono i

oh well, it is what it is.

  68. st. anthony trojan May 13, 2014 11:16 am

KP-KID…..do you know who initiated them games up there…with the intermediate kids…

What a marvelous idea….events like that are always remembered with fondness and aloha
for both participants….hence Mr. Hales experience as related to ST.

That is one of a number of missing ingredient that needs to be put back in the ‘pot’ up there in some of their programs….giving back to the community…if it is still being done by players…especially for the young n very impressionable students.

Seems to me that Mr. Trapasso should have realized that….so there be no need
for the Donovan edict as mentioned yesterday by Al.

Maybe Gib can look into it….if that is not done ne more…

Memories and are wonderful when we all age….but we should remember
also…that includes many a ‘change of attitude’ or possibility a life changing
and shift of very many young students…who will grow up to become productive
adults…and make their careers of choice…upon some seemingly insignificant events
    in their life…

Many happen at a very young age…others as they ramble on in school and life…
and some unfortunately….seem to get lost along the path to adulthood…
and they become politicians…he he he

Hello – Does anyone know when football season tickets go on sale? I know that renewals are up through May 16, but I am not currently a season ticket holder and would like to know when I can purchase season tickets.

    Thanks!

  70. SteveM May 13, 2014 11:40 am

oldtimer808 — I was 1967. Reunion planning is underway…they need headstart because everyone is tired of Vegas California hotel and the main organizers have never cruised before. On your #51, it really Depends. 🙂

Andrew — Those still in their seats at the end of a UH football game usually wait and stand for the UH alma mater. I do, but the words don’t flow through my mind as readily as in high school. Must be an age thing.

  72. Warrior Expat May 13, 2014 11:47 am

    71. Thanks for the response! I already tried going to the UH Athletics Site and I even have a ticket account (that I used to buy individual game tickets in the past). For the life of me I cannot find any information on the site as to when season tickets go on sale for non-renewals. I even tried the Aloha Stadium website but had no luck there either.

I might just be dense, but UH is not making it easy for people like me to find out when we can buy season tickets.

    Anyone else have any information?

  73. SteveM May 13, 2014 11:57 am

Warrior Expat — do you still reside in Los Angeles, or have you moved back to Oahu?

I don’t know the current procedure, but there is a request to submit and they call you with available seats after renewal changes end…usually late June.
Try calling the UH ticket office at (808) 956-4481 or email: uhtic@hawaii.edu

  74. Warrior Expat May 13, 2014 11:59 am

Still in LA, but hope to see a lot of games this season and I want to support the team.

Maybe you can send GIB an e-mail n see if possible to start again…n try n sort of structure so
be a little more ‘formal’…then be sort of a tradition….like me read on here of the
yearly ‘watering of a tree’ there at the field maybe…n something all the tsaiko’s here look forward to ….he he he

It be nice…you would be remembered…..maybe even a signed letter from the ‘boss’ himself for your horticulture responsibility to the school…..he he he

Serious though…try send e mail n see what happens…maybe you can include a copy
of Mr. Hales experience as was related by ST….it be positive…we need more of that….
then come later part or early….mr. st will have a very good topic to write about…
instead of the bad taste some of us felt….about how reggies mom was treated…go for it…

    Morning, folks!

Not sure if it was mentioned, but was looking at the Spring roster and noticed Bubba Poueu-Luna was not listed.

Is that kid still on the team?

Interesting story about a Boise State football recruit who was homeless, living in hotels and girlfriend’s car, while still finishing up classes at Fullerton College. Recently, Boise State got NCAA clearance to provide assistance to the player. There must have been other players in the past that overcame a similar obstacle without any assistance from the school.

Anyway, something to keep in mind if UH ever recruits a player in a similar situation.
