Joe Blow is planning a business trip to the mainland, in which he will leave on a red-eye flight on Monday night, arrive on Tuesday morning, then depart for the return trip on Thursday morning.
The company approves his travel budget of $1,160 — $700 for the round-trip airfare; $100 for the rental car; $240 for the hotel ($120 per day), and $120 for food ($20 per meal).
As it turns out, Mr. Blow has to pay $25 per way for his check-in suitcase. Another $60 is added to the rental-car bill for taxes, GPS device, collision insurance and gas. It’s another $20 at the hotel for taxes, maid tips and Internet use. Tack on another $30 for taxes and tips for the meals. The extras add up to $160.
In this analogy, the approved travel budget is the value of a full athletic scholarship. The so-called “cost of attendance” would be the total of the budget and the extras.
FBS conferences, including the Mountain West (of which UH is a member), have been meeting this week to discuss whether scholarship athletes should be compensated for the extras, which include money for laundry, gas for the moped, etc. Scholarships are based on a school’s tuition and average room and board. MWC officials have estimated that if scholarship athletes receive a flat annual stipend of $2,000 for the extras, it would amount to more than $300,000 for each school.
Figures are still being debated and maybe a resolution is near. Maybe not.
But it appears the cost of doing college-sports business could be going up.

I do think he is sincerely a UH athletic fan but promises of help have never been followed up with $$ or, as far as I know, with aid-in-kind.

Even if the Guv put the additional money in his proposed budget, it still would have to pass muster at the Legislature. It’s anybody’s guess as to how that would go.

It is hard to make a budget when you don’t know what new expenses might be required in the future. There will need to be a larger contingency figure put in.
Most times in doesn’t work in the reverse on the income ledger. But BJ seems to be getting a good response from the private sector to increase their support of the athletic department.
4–Your Honor, I agree, that at this juncture, unless hard dollars are committed, the Governor’s interest in the program, is just that–an interest–as opposed to a priority. That said, my suggestion, would to place some language, on the state’s transient occupancy tax, and once it goes over a specific dollar amount, a percentage is designated for the athletic department. That way, the athletic department unless derives a benefit when the state is doing well.
Oh, for you policy wonks, Hawai’i is the only state that utlizies this type of tax, typical for hotels/resorts/rental cars–and applies it to time shares.
UH is going to need help to support its athletic program.
It’s been stated many times before, but if gender-equity is the law, and non-compliance will affect federal funding, the school or state should pay for women’s athletics. The men’s programs can then be self-sufficient — with their budgets based on what they can produce.

So I don’t have any memory of Honolulu Stadium and can only base my opinions on pictures I found online. That being said, it doesn’t look like some great architectural masterpiece from what I see. It looks like a plain bleacher-type stadium to me.
So the question is, why the heck would Jay want to base a proposed new stadium on Honolulu Stadium? Was there something about the design of the HS that was amazing and hidden from pictures found online?
Imho, if we want to build new, lets build NEW. Use this opportunity to showcase modern design elements that will make people go “wow.”
11. You got that right. Thats why an assigned percentage, after a specific dollar, which also can serve as cap in any fiscal period, would allow, amounts to flow directly back to UHAD. Now, that is contingent, on the rather crucial feature that the state is doing well in thier hospitality industry, and as well all know, as it goes, so does the rest of the state.
I am not sure expenses like your hotel taxes, GPS devices, etc. are good examples. These expenses are costs associated with the trip. If you do not take the trip, you do not need to pay for these expenses.
On the other hand, laundry, gasoline are probably expenses you need to pay no matter if you go to school or not. It is not because of school that you have laundry to clean, it is not because of school that you need gasoline for your mopeds or vehicles. Even if a student choose not to play football and stayed home, there is still a cost for laundry but the family absorb it. Even if a student choose to stay home, he still may get a moped or car to enjoy the freedom of being able to drive around. He’ll still have gasoline expenses, etc.
Furthermore, if a student choose not to play football, he may still elect to move out of his house, then he’ll have all kinds of expenses including rent, food, laundry, gasoline, etc.
BTW, if UH can place football players into dormitory on campus, then these players will not need to get mopeds. When I was attending UH Manoa, majority of the students do not have cars/mopeds. Back then, buses do not come through campus so to go off campus is tough… Now, buses come through campus and there are Rainbow Shuttles, which makes it convenient. Back then, there were not many places to eat on campus. And we’ve survived without transportation even if we’ve relied on vending machines. Now, there are many to choose from including Starbucks. So, why travel out?
I had a graduate assistant job when I was attending UH but it only covered tuition and I also got paid hourly wage enough for me to pay for my dorm room (spring break, summer and Christmas break extras), dorm food (10 meals per week), books and with a few dollar left for soda and manapua from the vending machines for those late night studying at the library. However, I was also required to work 20 hours per week.
I can see inclusions of books, tuition, student fees, even dorm rental costs and may be even laundry be part of the equation but I do not see gasoline expense and other non-necessities!?
Now, health insurance is an interesting one!! You need health insurance no matter if you are a student/not a student, also no matter if you are a football player or not. Based on the same logic, it is not a cost solely because one plays football! Therefore, I would say no, not to include paying for player’s health insurance. On the other hand, since we have included dorm rooms and food costs, may be school should pay health insurance…

Gender Equity has too many flaws…..
I’m all for equal opportunity but lets stop fooling ourselves… College football and certain basketball programs are a business. Anyone who tries to argue is ignorant. If you’re business is generating revenue or profit, more money should be put back into that business to generate more money. You wouldn’t force a business to hire 50% men and 50% women. Universities shouldn’t be forced to spend the exact amount on men as women. There needs to be a common sense clause that realizes which sports generate money.
At Hawaii, Womens Volleyball generates money and big interest from fans here. That program deserves more attention and money than Mens Volleyball. Mens Footbal generates majority of the athletic programs revenue and should definitely get more perks than golf, womens sailing, tennis, etc.

It is for the university to determine what portion of the lump sum of the $350 to $400 million given to UH every year is to be used for athletics. Even if the legislatures ups the lump sum given to UH, the UH administration is under no obligation to parcel some of it out to the athletic department.
16…NorthShore, actually, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but the scholarship distribution, is already designated, per the sport. Thus, D1 football is always 85.

To add on to that thought, there numerical list were made per the NCAA and not articulated via nay language of title IX.
Moreover, for some equivalency sports, there are also limits on the number of players who can get any fraction of a scholarship — also known as “counters.” Baseball teams, for example, can have a maximum of 27 counters (that is 27 players dividing the 11.7 baseball scholarships) ; women’s ice hockey teams can have 30.
Let me guess Mr.Joe Blow is actually UH’s Mr. Bad Job who is against compensating athletes.
Mahalo boola…yes the distribution is set by no clue at all….wonder how they come up with it…these athletes make huge sacrifices and to say one spends more time than the other may not be the case but scholie awards do not reflect.
Just to highlight a few, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, golf, gymnastics, track and field are all year round training disciplines and some like baseball, off season travel.
Lastly, I don’t think admin. types are against compensating student athletes, it’s just a matter of where the money will come from.
Like #20 posted, even if there was choke $’s it comes down to a matter of priorities on those allocating the $’s.
Me, I just sit back and enjoy the student athletes and try to support them.

there will be forever the argument that there are other needs that need to be addressed at the State level or UH level and athletics will get its share – now, what will that share be?
Looking at pics in the online edition I get the craving for hamburger steak, gravy and onions all over and for good measure throw a couple of over easy extra large eggs on top with a bottle of tabasco for the drizzle.
It might be a struggle but I don’t see how one can complain about playing the sport you love while getting a subsidized higher learning education. Fricken kids nowadays thinking entitlement while they should be counting their blessings and making the best of what is given. Monku monku monku.

IWWTHM — glancing at the article, I don’t think BJ meant physical/architectural design elements of the old stadium. The wooden bleacher bench had huge cracks which were filled with many layers of grey paint, which probably held it all together.
The concessions were under the bleachers and when walking there, beware of what might drip on you from above. When the crowd stamped their feet, dirt, splinters, and termite droppings would fall on you. Wasn’t called the “Termite Palace” on a whim. 🙂
But, the old Honolulu Stadium had location, location, location. Especially near the UH Manoa campus that had classes in Varsity theater and PE bowling class at he Bowl-a-Drome next door. Walkable from the UH (for students) and King Street was a major bus line running in both directions in those days.
Plus, Al and hawnstln lived next door. Al could tell you a lot about the old stadium.
Slightly off topic…congrats to Dave Shoji. Both sons named to the US National team that will compete this summer.

while I agree that the old Honolulu Stadium site is great, don’t hold your breath for Bishop Estate to lease the land to UH for $10 a year for 99 years – land too valuable at that site!

#38 I think the State owns that park land and KSBE owns the land where the Bowl-o-Drome is located and much of the surrounding area. I could be wrong on the site but I thought that the State made the site a park.
I agree womens sports besides vollyball should be funded by the state. No sense paying for stuff that nobody cares about.
