Mr. Amazin’

By Stephen Tsai on March 16, 2009

Outside linebacker R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane is officially amazing. Two weeks ago, he bench pressed 450 pounds. Today, he had a team-high vertical jump of 38 inches. SAfety Jordan Gomes was second with a vertical jump of 36.5 inches, followed by slotback Kealoha Pilares (36 inches). * * * Wideout Rodney Bradley, who is challenging for a starting job in spring ball, had the most impressive broad jump — 10 feet, 2.5 inches. He also had the highest vertical touch, hitting a […]

Sunday blessings

By Stephen Tsai on March 15, 2009

It’s time that good deeds get noticed. So here’s to: • The UH baseball players who help put down the tarp during rain delays. Their quick work enabled the teams to outlast the showers and resume the game. • Kara Nishimura, the assistant sports media relations director, who is the official scorer for every home softball game. During the recent tournament, she worked five games, the first starting at 9 a,m. and the last ending at 10 p.m. She’s also […]

Colt, A-Rod joined at the hip (surgery)

By Stephen Tsai on March 14, 2009

Colt Brennan confirms that he and A-Rod had the same injury (slightly torn labrum). Both were treated by the same specialist, Dr. Marc Philippon of Colorado. But while A-Rod opted to immediately undergo surgery that will force him to miss up to two months, Brennan delayed his operation in order to participate in last year’s Senior Bowl, NFL Scouting Combine and UH’s Pro Day. Brennan’s toughness — he played all of 2006 with a lumbar strain and most of 2007 […]

Blaze due back in late April

By Stephen Tsai on March 13, 2009

Word on the street is that Blaze Soares, who is recovering from an achilles’ injury, is projected to receive medical clearance in late April. That will be too late for him to participate in spring ball, but enough time to prepare for the Aug. 3 start of training camp. * * * Newcomers are scheduled to report Aug. 1. The returning players must report by Aug. 2. And the first practice of training camp is Aug. 3. * * * […]

Video coordinator leaving UH

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2009

The Warrirors suffered a significant loss when video coordinator Ryan Biesemeyer accepted a coaching position at Texas Lutheran. Biesemeyer will be in charge of the running backs. Biesemeyer would produce “cut ups” that would allow the coaches to digitally access videos of plays based on down-and-distance situations and coverages. He was skilled enough that the coaches, on road trips, would have cutups of the game to review on the return flight to Hawai‘i. Biesemeyer * * * I’m thinking former […]
