Colt, A-Rod joined at the hip (surgery)

Colt Brennan confirms that he and A-Rod had the same injury (slightly torn labrum).
Both were treated by the same specialist, Dr. Marc Philippon of Colorado.
But while A-Rod opted to immediately undergo surgery that will force him to miss up to two months, Brennan delayed his operation in order to participate in last year’s Senior Bowl, NFL Scouting Combine and UH’s Pro Day. Brennan’s toughness — he played all of 2006 with a lumbar strain and most of 2007 with a severely sprained ankle — should be appreciated.

Linebacker Tim Brown, who made 107 tackles as a Kapolei High senior in 2007, said he will join the Warriors as a walk-on.
Brown is 6 feet 1 and 217 pounds.
He attended Fort Union Military Academy, a prep school in Virginia, during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Sad to report that Bob Ryan, a former UH assistant football coach, has died. Ryan was on Dave Holmes’ staff in the early 1970s.
He also was once WAC commissioner Karl Benson’s father-in-law.

Happy birthday to the very beautiful Juliet (Mrs. D1shima).

I think the prep academy route is a pretty good option. It’s essentially the 13th grade.
You get another year of schooling, plus you get to play ball.
Colt went to a prep school.

    He’s a neatnik.

Oh, and let me tell you about that stream. What is it? Twelve feet wide?
To repair that little bridge took more than two years. And millions of dollars. Then there was the down time. So they set up a light system because the bridge could accommodate only one lane of traffic. They put up a light system in which it was red on both sides. Then when the sensor picked up a waiting card, there was a 10-second pause before the green light came on. Sometimes it took several minutes to make the 12-foot drive.

  19. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2009 9:13 am

It’s about a guy who decides to wait 50 years to win back the woman he lost. He figures, better chance when she’s old.
Sorta like that strategy I had when I was 14 and decided I could win over Kate Jackson when she was 80. I think I’ve got another 20 years to wait.

  54. Kazz March 14, 2009 10:01 am

My experience at Irish Pubs in Hawaii has been hit or miss.

    HIT: Irish Rose Salon.
Why: Well nothing outstanding, just a mellow place. Not bad at all. Parking, as with all of Waikiki is horrible though.

    HIT: Murphy’s
Why: Witnessed two wonderful UH football road victories there (at Nevada 2007 and at Fresno State 2008). Don Murphy is the man. Surrounded by UH fanatics.

MISS: O’Tooles (next door to Murphy’s)
Why: For a place that advertises they show UH games, I have never had the displeasure of being around the LARGEST amount of non/anti-UH fans there. I separated from the Tsaiko bunch during the Nevada game in 07 for about two quarters to find my friends sitting in O’Tooles because there were no seats available inside or outside of Murphy’s. I SWEAR the “people” there gave off the “I don’t care who UH is playing but I’ll cheer for them anyway”. Not to mention, some Caucasian folks yelled “sit down brownies!” at us as we cheered for a UH TD. Luckily my Samoan friend was not in attendance that night… The douches in question were sporting various BCS school shirts and not one Nevada one either.

…AND not to mention the “tongue-in-cheek” commercial for O’Tooles they’ve been playing on K-5 that is just borderline offensive to me. The commercial shows three people (two men and one woman) introducing themselves to each other. They are all from the mainland. Then a local guy (horrible and outlandish stereotype) joins in and says “Dis Kimo from Waianae, dey get good pupus ova hea?” Then the three mainlanders look at him like they are about to kick his face in. The commercial ends with ‘for a different taste of Oahu”.

To me, I say, their (O’Tooles) taste of Oahu tastes like S**T.

This is one establishment I wouldn’t mind seeing burned to the ground one day. Not to mention they violate the “No Smoking” rule. Now, I AM A SMOKER. Do I miss smoking indoors at bars? Sure. Does the rule bother me? No. But there is something about their blatant and arrogant attitude towards certain things just pisses me off. Not to mention the amount of jerks that place attracts on a usual basis.

BTW the owner of O’Tooles is the same owner of Kelly O’Neals. So I am sure I will avoid that place too if they share the same “taste of Oahu”.

(Ok, that is my rant for the day.)

  55. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2009 10:02 am

Ever notice they announce flash-flood warnings at the worst times?
A man waits 50 years for a woman, they gaze into each other’s eyes and … (BLARE) A flashflood warning has been issued … tune into your hotel television’s …”
    Hotel television?
If I’m in a hotel, and see the message, doesn’t that mean I’m watching TV?

    Stephen Tsai:

    March 14th, 2009 at 10:04 am
I think Kazz needs a beer.
    Fast.

Honestly. Technically I don’t drink. At the tailgates. I can make two or three beers last for 4-5 hours. Inside the stadium I don’t buy beer because it’s expensive and UH doesn’t get a cut of the concessions at Aloha Stadium anyway.

This year on campus, I went to 13 basketball games, 5 men volleyball games, and one Wahine basketball game. Collectively I bought two beers COMBINED.

Beer just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t know how most people can drink like a fish and not feel bloated.

Hard liquor is where the fun is at, but even this I will probably stop after 3 or four stiff drinks.

Maybe it’s because I did the majority of my heavy drinking when I was 19. Back then 5 straight shots of Bacardi 151 was just the start of things.

I think some of my friends are the cause of this. I see them get drunk and act like they are 5 and I say to myself, “yeah, I’m done.”

Ironically enough, there was a news report mentioning Tadd was in a tight group of contenders including Charles Howell III and Rocco Mediate, who were also T12 at the end of Day 2. Well, they didn’t have a great day either (Rocco was 3-over for the day, Howell was _5_ over).

I did rant about that place at the WSN misc forum and I’ve been on a rollercoaster about it as the commercial keeps airing on K-5 nonetheless.

At first I was mad, then calmed down and gave the makers or the commercial and the establishment’s owner/marketing VP the benefit of the doubt, now I am back to just mad and irritated again.

I tell ya, for anyone that is ‘local” just try walk into that place and be yourself and see what happens.

    RE: Tsaikette-only Karaoke Call

I am only trying to instigate… the actual planning and organization of such an event should come from a Tsaikette. IMO, the natural leader/organizer for this would be Mrs. Bulla. Abetted by LizKauai, Mei Ling, Diana, Mrs. d1 and Wena.

    Known Tsaikette Tsingers (alphabetical order):
    Addahknowsports
    Mrs. BG
    Brie
    Mrs. Bulla
    Cindy (Cenn)
    Diana
    Esme
    JaM
    LizKauai
    Mrs. Long Time UH Fan
    Mei Ling
    Midori7
    Myki
    Pam
    Peaches
    UHfan808
    Wena

…have not heard Rob25 or Mrs. A-House yet but I’m sure they would do great! Maybe Peaches will give the Boss a call… 🙂

Momo, regarding things to do in Sydney.

I would highly recommend the Sydney Harbor cruise. I think it was called the “Coffe Cruise” or something like that. Very relaxing ride past the main sites like the Opera House, famous Sydney Beaches, million dollar waterfront residences, and on to the headlands adjacent to the open ocean.

Another thing I highly recommend is the short boat taxi ride to the Tangoran Zoo, which is located on a hillside across from the city center so as you come across the water, you can see the exhibits lined up across the hillside. Very impressive zoo and the easiest way to see native Australian fauna. Then, the view back towards Sydney is a great photo op.

Darling Harbor is a huge entertainment/shopping area, kind of like the wharf area in San Francisco, but MORE. The are also some interesting shops in the area called The Rocks, which is where the first Europeans settled, and around the Opera House area.

Also, I remember being very impressed by the display of live 25+ feet salt water crocodiles, but I can’t remember if that was at the Tangoran zoo or a separate aquarium. Sorry.

One thing I planned to do, but couldn’t because I had to cut my trip short is to take a plane to Alice Springs to see Uluru (Ayer’s Rock). This is not a short trip because of the distance. I think the flight alone will take 3 hours or more. (Australia is roughly the size of the US mainland so going from Sydney to Alice Springs is like flying from Florida to Denver). That is a significant use of time and money, but you will see one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and when else will you be back in Sydney.

I also wanted to take a tour to Lightning Ridge to see the opal mine, but I think that was mostly because the name Lightning Ridge is so evocative.

Remember to save a few aussie dollars for the departure tax that you have to pay at the airport.

September 18 Programming Note: It is certain there will be a Tsai-ko gathering on Friday, Sept. 18 from around 6:00 PM. This Friday night gathering is to provide Tsai-kos from Hawaii and the mainland (international too) an opportunity to meet in person. Part of the program will be small group introductions.

las vegas is still working on where… “where” determines food options and facility costs. The number of expected attendees usually determines the “where”. Please RSVP soonest.

It is apparent that not all Tsai-kos would tailgate together on game Saturday. We have UH Alumni Association tailgate, SportsHawaii tailgate, Boyd tailgate, our tailgate, hotel and travel agency tailgates, etc.. SO, the Friday night gathering is planned for everyone who makes it to Vegas in time….

    WarriorMojo,

After your advice on Australia, I’m even more jealous that I can’t go on that trip! I guess it is a sign of the economic times that Hawaiian Airlines has so many open seats to/from Australia during Spring Break so Momo, Mrs. Momo, and my sister’s family can all fly to Australia standby for free. They will be traveling with my sister’s 3 kids, ranging from 9 to 2 years old, so that might limit what they can do.

  98. Garret March 14, 2009 12:51 pm

Warrior fans appreciate how tough Colt is, as he took such a pounding and kept his high level of play. I’m hoping that Washington fans get to see him play this year during the regular season, as I’m sure he’ll do really well in the preseason.

  99. Garret March 14, 2009 12:55 pm

It is crazy that Texas now has 20 commits, with 16 of them 4 or 5 star players. Last year Ohio State had 14 recruits on the Rivals top 250 list, the most from any school…and Texas already has 16 on that list and are among the finalists for a few other top recruits.

I thought I was finally going to have some blog time to look up the past UH players as requested…but my kids just woke up.

MOMO: Forgot to mention that Sydney has two hop-on/hop off bus system that takes you around all the tourist hot-spot. The turn around point is very close to Chinatown (cheap, comparatively). The other bus route takes you out to the “countryside” including Bondi beach. You can pickup the bus more or less in front of Sydney Harbor (sort of shaped like the letter “U”) and the bus terminal would be more or less at the bottom of the “U”. Get one of those tourist bus passes which lets you ride for a time-certain (24/48 hours or three days). The terminal also is the place where you can board for tours of the harbor, ferries to various points, including the zoo, aquarium. There is also a railroad station there which can take you to the airport. Comparatively easy walk around the “U” the right leading you straight to the Opera House and the left to the bridge where you can walk to the top.

Garret – #158 – in my limited personal experiences, a lot of those who either immigrated to the US as children or were born here but speak another language at home do NOT have the reading/writing skills in that language. So, if the AP classes are teaching reading/writing skills, then they should go for it.

Researchers have found that the fear response in people can be permanently reduced by using the beta-blocker propranolol, which could mean that anxiety disorders and phobias could be cured! For example, people who have a fear of spiders can have that fear eliminated via propranolol.

When I first started having problems with my anxiety levels, my doctor prescribed atenolol, which is a related beta blocker. It worked in getting my heart rate down from an always anxious 90-100 to a normal 60-65, but it didn’t stop the self-scanning (where you’re always checking your pulse, checking your breathing, self-gauging your BP, etc.), which can help fuel the flight-or-fight response that causes the anxiety. Of course, the atenolol helped negate the effects of the adrenaline, so I didn’t really feel the continued cycle, but it didn’t stop the cycle at all. So all the atenolol did was mask the symptoms, not stop the underlying problem.

Not to mention, I had some bad side effects and had to stop using it after a couple days. My cousin and his fiancée were visiting at the time, and we were at the PCC playing tourist when I had a bad case of dizziness. Had to rest in the first aid room the rest of the day with my Mom, while my cousin and his fiancée enjoyed the festivities. Although I did go to the dinner buffet, but I wasn’t very hungry.

The folks at the PCC were so nice, they knew we had paid for the Ambassador Lū‘au package, but when I got sick, my Mom and I didn’t do much but hang in the First Aid room. So because we missed the Horizons show, they gave us a free DVD copy of it! I really like that show (we had gone once before), so I was ready to treasure that thing — then my Mom gave it to my cousin to give to my aunt. That reminds me, my Mom promised me she’d buy me a copy of that DVD … 😀

But back to the article. I see where there could be some valid use of these types of drugs to treat anxiety. But it sounds more like a treatment for phobias and PTSD than general anxiety or panic disorder. I mean, you could try initiating an anxiety/stress trigger (say, someone yells at you), and try the drug treatment based on that. My question would be, does the treatment just help with the reaction to the trigger, or any stress in general? Does the cure for my fear of spiders also cure my fear of heights, or my hypochondria? Will it help balance levels of stress hormones, and calm my autonomic nervous system down? I’m not convinced yet.

UH has a lot of young pitchers so the future looks bright if they remain patient and stick around..who is red shirting..not to many innings available to them…hope we don’t start hearing about sore arms like last year..

Solid win by the BaseBOWS tonight!

Too bad for Landon Hernandez as he would of had TWO homers instead of one off a shoddy “foul ball” call.

Good to see Kevin MacDonald’s hitting improving with each passing game.

A big welcome to Easton Torigoe to the batting rotation tonight! Jeff Van Dornum and Christian Johnson will have to work extra hard to earn Coach Trap’s trust back.

Oh and what was the deal with Coach Komeji calling Wong into home on that one play that could of got us a two run lead instead of just sitting on a one run lead.
