Mr. Amazin’

Outside linebacker R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane is officially amazing.
Two weeks ago, he bench pressed 450 pounds.
Today, he had a team-high vertical jump of 38 inches.
SAfety Jordan Gomes was second with a vertical jump of 36.5 inches, followed by slotback Kealoha Pilares (36 inches).

* * *

Wideout Rodney Bradley, who is challenging for a starting job in spring ball, had the most impressive broad jump — 10 feet, 2.5 inches.
He also had the highest vertical touch, hitting a nearly 11-foot-high marker. Among the Warriors, Bradley has the longest reach (8 feet, 1 inch). Here’s Bradley’s broad jump:

Here’s slotback Dustin Blount;

And running back Leon Wright-Jackson:

Antwan “Tua” Mahaley, who has played defensive end the past two seasons, is embracing his new role as a tight end.
The Warriors have not used a tight end as part of the basic offensive scheme since 1998, the year preceding June Jones’ arrival. During Jones’ tenure, some running backs were aligned to the side of the offensive tackle as an extra blocker. Also, offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli practiced as a tight end in the two weeks leading to the 2008 Sugar Bowl, but did not play that position during the game.
“Right now, I’ve got to learn the system and see how it works out in the spring,” said Mahaley, who has not played tight end since his junior year of high school. “If it works out well,  it’ll mostly likely be put in for fall camp.”
Mahaley said he weighs about 225 pounds. He said he would like gain another 10 pounds .
Meanwhile, he is running routes during unsupervised workouts.

Didn’t someone mention something about the broad jump being a key indicator of football related athleticism?
Is there a scale of some sort that relates broad jump ability to overall size/weight? Kind of like a “power index”?

I was excited about Tua when we recruited him as a WR because of his 6’4″-6″5″ size.

I was also excited when they decided to move him to Defensive End, especially after seeing what happened to Ikaika Alama-Francis.

I guess now that he’s gonna be a Senior, the coaches are trying to help him find his niche and get more playing time other than special teams for a NFL push?

  14. al ™ March 16, 2009 10:41 am

so why don’t they run 40’s?

  15. al ™ March 16, 2009 10:43 am

i could see him destroying wr’s coming across the middle ala troy polamalu.

I hope that R.J. has an awesome season–his strength and vertical jump stats are amazing and I thought he did well when he had a chance to play last season. With his experience from last season and his work ethic, he should be a major force for the Warriors D.

Regarding Marve, he’s narrowed his list of teams down to 6 and says he’ll announce his choice soon.

Former Miami quarterback Robert Marve has narrowed his list of prospective schools to six, including the University of South Florida, but that list could grow, Plant High coach Robert Weiner said.

Besides USF, the former Plant star is also considering Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue, Texas Tech and UCLA.

Actually, the guy with second thoughts is a lineman with a Biblical name who attends a school that begins and ends with a vowel.
He inquired about transferring to a school in the middle of the Pacific, but was told that he needs to receive a release first before they can talk, and that he should wait until after the spring semester.
Or so goes the word on the street.

The series with Coastal Carolina is not exactly a rip off for Hawaii fans, but kinda messed up.

Thursday night, 6:35pm is business as usual, but to have a double header on Friday starting at 3:05?!?!? C’MON!

I know it probably has to do with Carolina’s travel arrangements, but how accommodating are mainland teams or the NCAA in general when WE have to travel long distances?!?!?!!

Just for that I hope the hitting continues and we stomp the hell out of them! 😈

Best wishes to Mahaley and his audition at TE.
It is senior time and perhaps this ‘twener will be able to contribute to his team given his athletic assests.
Gordie Shaw should be helpful to Ron Lee in implementing a TE package with a revision of blocking schemes that will lend credibility if indeed this scheme is utilized.

As far as Robert Marve is concerned–we can do without this troubled and controversal ex-Hurricane….he should have followed his mother’s advice.

QB is a position where personality disorders can infect a team–can u say–Tyler Graunke.

Statistics are nice and everything, but it doesn’t automatically translate to the football field. So, I can’t be too impressed. The question is…..can they play football at a high level on the field. Take the case of Vernon Davis, TE of the 49ers. He did terrific at the combine and the Niners drafted in the first round. By all counts, so far Davis has been a bust so far. Let’s remember this Warrior football team last year was not good.
I hope this year will be better because as a retiree time is running out.
I want to be optimistic, but at the same time as they say in Missouri….show me! And as Bill Parcells says, let’s not do the annointing oil just yet. We’ve got a lot of work to do. That’s all.

    ~*~*~*BREAKING NEWS FROM FLORIDA PATTI*~*~*~

    “Aloha Kekoa,

I have good news and good news…I brought my darling Ted home from the hospital late Sat. evening. He is walking, talking and doing sooooooo well. All he needs is some speech therapy. Anyone who knows Ted, knows how he loves to talk. He gets frustrated but all in all I think he is doing well. Waiting on word when the therapist will come.

He is very anxious to get on the blog, but he is not up for it yet. He has given up smoking (four packs a day), and coffee. It is taking its toll on him but I know he will defeat this also. He just doesn’t know what to do with himself, he use to enjoy a good T.V. program, but has difficulty sitting still long enough to watch a show. How I wish there was a Hawaii Warrior game on….I know he would sit still for that and enjoy himself.

He wanted me to extend his deepest Aloha to all of you and to let you know he will be back on the blog soon!! My love and thanks to all of you too!

    Blessings and love,

Florida Patti (Praise the Lord and make each day count)”

  178. afan March 16, 2009 5:31 pm

Whoa! Honolulu Advertiser finally let me in! Thank you. I thought they blocked me out for good!

Basketball ain’t football. Anyway, What do you think? 20 chinups and 6 reps of 225. The strongest UH basketball player ever did. Think about it! Off-season conditioning; play video games, spock chicks at the student center and Ala Moana shopping center? Even though this blog is for football; 20 max? How do you think the basketball team is heading for in ’09? Aloha Nash?

  179. Kazz March 16, 2009 5:36 pm

It has been brought up on Sports Hawaii and probably here before about several mainland high school teams using the UH “H” as their logo.

It has been around for the longest time, for as long as many can remember, and I am talking about the use of trademarked logos being used by high school sports teams. Locally we see the Farrington Govs using the University of Georgia and the Green Bay Packers’ oval “G” logo with a different color and Kahuku using the University of Utah’s logo with the Native American feather.

While it’s not so much of the threat of a high school using a trademarked logo for monetary profit, is the issue of what a logo means to that original team/university be taken into consideration should that entity seek legal recourse to cease unauthorized use of their logo?

The NFL doesn’t bother with it, should colleges even care as well?

The UH “H” carries more meaning behind it in a cultural sense that the USC logo or the UCLA logo so this is something that hits closer to home for us.

Personally, BECAUSE of the extra meaning the UH “H” has for us, I think these high school teams that use our “H” should find something else ASAP or face legal consequences.

Changing a high school team’s logo is not depriving those student athletes of anything so I think the case of a university “bullying” a high school is not even a defense in this case. It is ours and we have a right to protect what is legally ours. The question of what we are protecting ourselves from is simply our identity as a university for all the alumni and our identity as a people regardless of ethnicity.

A school in Arkansas or Houston has NO connection at all with the tapa H no matter how they want to spin it.

Not sure why the rumors about the Arizona DT is still circulating. I believe someone in the know shot down those rumors on one of the local bulletin boards.

Ah, but it’s the way I said it is. He called UH, said he was homesick and inquired about coming home. UH said it couldn’t talk to him without a release, and told him to go back for the spring semester. We’ll see what happens this summer. Maybe he likes it there and he’ll stay. But he did call UH.

  206. Ralph March 16, 2009 8:44 pm

regarding the shutdown of the SF, I feel for the neighbor isle vendors who could ship their produce and products with the SF in these tough economic times and with the cost of fuel, air freight would really reduce their margin…

  207. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2009 8:46 pm

UH has to track such calls, just in case somebody protests or files tampering charges.

Interesting that when Central Arkansas comes to Aloha Stadium to open their season, they will have new offensive and defensive coordinators, a completely shuffled coaching staff, and will be breaking in a new QB.

The Bears find themselves breaking in new offensive and defensive coordinators, new coaches, old coaches with new roles, and searching for – among others – a successor to the most prolific quarterback in Arkansas college football history.

  213. Garret March 16, 2009 8:58 pm

We don’t know what day UH will play at San Jose State, but kickoff will be at 5pm Pacific Time unless TV wants the time moved.

What is known about the 2009 San Jose State home schedule is Saturday games will have a 5:00 p.m. kickoff time for the second season in a row unless moved to accommodate television interests.

  214. Garret March 16, 2009 9:00 pm

Here are some of the reasons why the WAC hasn’t been able to figure out the conference football schedule yet.

This year, there are only 14 Saturdays in September, October, November and the first weekend in December to complete the regular season versus 15 in 2008. At least one WAC school is interested in taking advantage of playing a 13th regular season game. On the surface, that may not impact those like San Jose State as much playing 12 games, but a school playing 13 games can have only one bye week.

  215. Garret March 16, 2009 9:00 pm

ESPN, the owner of the conference’s television rights, is interested in placing games in mid-week prime-time viewing slots. If the network assigns a team a Tuesday or Wednesday game with the consent of the school and the WAC, it cannot play either the Saturday before or the weekend after the midweek national TV assignment. Thus, two teams’ bye weeks are automatically determined for those playing a 12-game schedule. If ESPN wants to televise a game midweek involving a school hoping to play 13 games, one-time accommodations must be made to fit in the 14-weekend calendar.

  216. Garret March 16, 2009 9:00 pm

Unlike San Jose State, which has all its non-conference games at the beginning of the season, there is at least one WAC member with at least one non-conference game in the second half of the season. Scheduling games with the least number of variables is most desirable. Multiple non-conference games late in a season increase those variables for the schedule maker.

    Re: C. Arkansas.
That’s like UH at Florida last year.

  218. Garret March 16, 2009 9:12 pm

    ST,

I think that is actually worse than UH at Florida last year. At least UH had a lot of seniors and the defensive coaches were still around.

I am the real Jason. But it has been a weird day. I decided since I’m getting over a cold that I’d take one more sick day, sleep in and get some work done here at home. Felt great when I woke up this morning, like my cold is just about done. Continued to feel great as the day went along. Then about an hour ago, this huge headache hits. Started feeling better, but it’s crept back, so I took some acetaminophen. Maybe that’s causing the bizarre stuff. No, wait, I posted that before I took the pill. Hmm …

I guess I’ll go to bed soon.
