Hawaii football: A good bye
The Warriors completed their third — and final — practice of bye week with sprints and renewed enthusiasm.
“I think the development of the offense is progressing,” associate head coach Brian Smith said after today’s two-hour practice at the Ching Athletic Complex. “You can see that — growing through the second half of the Washington game, then Central Arkansas, then Reno. You’re seeing a progression of confidence … and familiarity and comfort playing together with each other offensively.”
This weekend is the second bye for the Warriors. The first break came after the season-opening victory over Arizona.
“The great thing about this one was coming off of travel,” said Smith, referring to the Warriors’ delayed return from the mainland following a 54-3 victory over Nevada a week ago. “It allowed us to have a few days to let the players catch up on sleep. A lot of the coaches got to stay (on the mainland) and recruit for a few days. And it gave us some extra time to start prepping for (next Saturday’s game against) Boise.”
An added boost was the return of center Kohl Levao, who has not played in a game this season since suffering an ailment during training camp.
“He’s back practicing,” Smith said. “It’s great. He’s another physical body. He has experience. As much depth as we can get on the O-line is great.”

#6 yes my whole family will be going and some friends. Should be good fun. The stadium normally empty. We will be on the Hawaii side 50 yard line.
After watching the game last night, Boise doesn’t seem to have the same potent offense it once had in past years. I think we have a legitimate chance of pulling off an upset and our first win in there house. Both of our defenses are playing well so I think it will be a fairly low scoring game.

Well…given the fact that Boise played UNLV while Hawaii used their bye week in preparation for Boise, I expect a possibly down-to-the-wire game. Yes, you can make the statement Boise State’s freshman QB has been stellar, but at the same token, Boise didn’t have stellar outings against its first two opponents. The fact that Florida State led by 12 and lost it by 5 proved WEAKNESS! Even with Marshall. A low-scoring game and still won? It should have felt more like a blowout if you ask me. On paper, Boise State didn’t quite get much of a challenge after their first two opponents. They blew out their next three opponents by a combined 71 points. The true test for Hawaii to beat Boise is on these tasks:
1) Don’t get distracted by the blueness of the field while handling an altitude of 2,695 feet above sea level.
2) The secondary handling Boise’s receivers. Khalil Shakir stands at 6’0″ and is averaging over 70 yards per game, John Hightower is 6’2″ and averages 60 yards per game, 5’10” Akilian Butler averages close to 40 yards per game, CT Thomas at 5’8″ averages over 70 yards per game. Each of those guys are lethal if the secondary doesn’t cover them carefully.
3) Hawaii forcing Boise State to make their defense second-guess their routes against their receivers, especially if Byrd or Ward can outpace Boise’s secondary and make big plays in chunks.
4) Cole making good decisions and not allowing Boise’s defense to trample in bunches.
5) Hawaii’s offense defense plays a clean game, much like how they did against Arizona and Oregon State. If they can play with that kind of game with Boise, whether on offense or defense, it shouldn’t be much of a problem.
Much like Honu’s comment, I’m probably expecting “maybe” a semi-low scoring game, give or take…

Hawaii always runs into a timing problem.
For instance … It would have been fun to see a true freshman quarterback play on the road against Hawaii. Instead. the Boise quarterback gets the comfort of home. And next year, with a full season of experience, he gets to play in Hawaii.

The fake media is at it again! Curious on how in the latest AP TOP 25 poll, Arizona got 11 votes and Hawaii got 0, even though Hawaii beat Arizona head to head and has the same amount of losses,1, as Arizona.
Also Hawaii beat just as many pac-12 schools, 2, as Arizona did. Hawaii beat Arizona and oregon state while Arizona beat Colorado and UCLA, which I might add that the latter lost to San Diego state, which blows the whole strength of schedule argument out of the water.
Avoid Boise? We not sked dem.

So Levao is back, hopefully Stovall. Not so sure Bubba Waa didn’t get in the mix last week. Pritchard Okeke and Akoteau will or should be back to true form. This is gonna be a challenge, but observing BSU they hold a ton cause they can’t protect the Qb-they are also athletic in the secondary but hold and interfere quite blatantly in the secondary. They were penalized for 130 yards this past week. This game will tell us where we are as a team. No blowout here-close game and again if we show up to play we come away with a win. No sweat if we get down early. No real insight here can’t afford turnovers and mistakes. This is our best chance to win in years! Go Warriors!!!!

Boise has some tricky plays and showed a couple at the beginning of the UNLV game.
UH beat BS in Boise when B Wagner was coach and BS was DII.
Feels like the 2006 season. Lost to #25 Boise at Boise by a touchdown. Opened the season with a loss at Alabama. Blew out all the other WAC teams then won a good (real fun to witness) home game vs Purdue. The next week lost (as ranked favorite) a close game vs a good Oregon St team. Finished by blowing out Arizona St in the Hawaii Bowl. The next year they would go undefeated but this group (the 2006 team) was considered a little better (way more physical). But you could see things were starting to click offensively and carried over to the “magical” 2007 season. History repeating itself? Maybe, but the narrative can change with a win Saturday. On a tangent that we have not seen (or felt) before. Will take full focus, preparation, and trust but totally 100% possible. From there “the sky’s the limit”. Unreal. Can do.
