Warrior Beat: Hawaii football workouts done, spring game on deck

Quarterback Cole McDonald (left) will start for the Mauka team in Saturday's spring game. / Photo by Stephen Tsai

The Warriors held their final full spring football practice today. There will be a light walk-through session on Friday afternoon. The spring game is set Saturday, with the circus-themed event beginning at 4 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex.

Unlike previous years, this spring game will match two full teams — Mauka (first-team offense, second-team defense) vs. Makai (first-team defense, second-team offense).

The game — four quarters of running time — should answer some depth-chart questions. Maybe. The past week, quarterback Cole McDonald took he No. 1 reps while playing behind this offensive line: LT Ilm Manning, LG J.R. Hensley, C, Kohl Levao, RG Solo Vaipulu and RT Gene Pryor. With Kumoku Noa being sidelined, Jared Smart has impressed as the left wideout. On defense, Khoury Bethley is recuperating from an ailment, opening the way for freshman Tiger Peterson to take a lot of first-team reps at safety.

Meanwhile, Justice Augafa is on the move again. After a stint at running back, Augafa has moved to safety.

The 25th Annual Ed Wong Memorial Golf Tournament was held on 4/9 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course. Named after Ed Wong, one of the founders of Na Koa Football Club, the golf tournament is one of the big fundraising events of the year raising much needed funds for the Warrior Football program.

Saturday will be busy day with Wahine softball doubleheader starting at 2. Spring fling activity starts at 4, but scrimmage not till 6. I like the spring game format with the players mingling with the fans and introducing themselves, games for the kids and the food trucks. Last year there was a sushi truck, but I don’t see it on the list. Hoping there will show up.

Man I don’t read the blog for one day and the crazy guy is back. C’mon Stephen. You got one job man. Make him go away.

  13. haka April 26, 2019 11:18 am

The guy is not crazy. He has been unaccomplished academically, athletically and socially all his life and his only resolve is to be an anonymous antagonistic troll on social media venues to get the attention he has always been deprived of. Unable to have his opinions and intellect respected in life as he knows it, he has to resort to a communication style of gibberish and perversion in order to not reveal his true inability to be a positive and knowing contributor. His inner hate can only manifest itself in such a way and with the constant need to change his identity, he is developing a social media personality disorder that we can only hope will not reveal itself to the real world. jmo.

Update for everyone who is looking for NCAA tickets to support University of Hawai’i Men’s Volleyball next weekend:

Spoke to the LBSU ticket office…

-First up, they will be throwing a WATCH PARTY at the field near The Pyramid. Free admission, will have food/drink vendors. This applies to Thurs & Sat.

-Second, the waiting list was capped at 233 names on Monday. I’m number 143. If any of the schools who lose want to return tickets, they will begin calling this list. (I have a ticket for myself but am looking for more for my family)

–Lastly, and pretty important, if SRO tickets do become available (still waiting on word from the NCAA)… they will be sold FIRST COME FIRST SERVED on game day.

    Yeah, the buggah is back.
In my defense, I’m down the list now. There are people in charge of getting rid of buggahs.
    They’re slacking.

Sobering numbers regarding UW’s assistant coaches salaries:

    Asst. Coaches salaries:
Jimmy Lake, defensive coordinator/defensive backs: $1,400,016*
    Pete Kwiatkowski, co-defensive coordinator/outside linebackers: $950,004*
    Bush Hamdan, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks: $750,000*
Bob Gregory, inside linebackers/special teams: $550,008
    Scott Huff, offensive line: $550,008*
    Ikaika Malloe, defensive line: $455,004*
    Keith Bhonapha, running backs: $380,004*
    Junior Adams, wide receivers: $375,000
    Jordan Paopao, tight ends: $300,000
Will Harris, assistant defensive backs: $230,004*
Tim Socha, Strength Coach: $340,000 (highest in the Pac-12)

*represents an increase in pay from 2018

Question is does UH/State of Hawaii have the commitment to get to the next level or is football just a “casual spectator sport” that will receive “manini kine” support enough to just put a team on the field?

    Round 2, Pick # 11. Lions.

    Draft Grade: C+
    School: Hawaii
    Height: 6′ 2″
    Weight: 250

    Yahoo Sports Commentary
Had he not been hurt, Tavai might have gone higher. He’s a big-hitting, thick-framed throwback linebacker – just what Matt Patricia seeks at the position. Although Tavai has seemingly regressed since an incredible 2016 season, he could be back on the rise with good health and the proper time to develop. A fascinating pick.

  22. Old School Dave April 26, 2019 2:11 pm

Congrats to Jahlani!! The hard work pays off. Mahalo for representing!

  23. Losthawaiian April 26, 2019 2:13 pm

Tavai taken by Detroit with the 43rd pick! Congrats!

  24. ai-eee-soos April 26, 2019 2:13 pm

    Pick # 43, overall.

    Outstanding !!!

  25. ai-eee-soos April 26, 2019 2:30 pm

    Team News

    Jahlani Tavai LB, Detroit Lions
Lions selected Hawaii LB Jahlani Tavai with the No. 43 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Tavai (6’2/250) was a four-year starter in the Rainbows’ linebacker corps, spending his final three in the middle and graduating with 41 career TFLs, 17.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles, only to suffer a year-ending shoulder injury eight games into 2018. Tavai’s recovery limited his pre-draft workouts, but his tape shows a physical throwback off-ball linebacker with flashes of run-thumping dominance and edge-rushing impact. Also capable in coverage despite his plus size, Tavai was compared to a poor man’s Leighton Vander Esch by Athletic draft guru Dane Brugler. Matt Patricia likely will use tavai similarly to how the Patriots used Kyle Van Noy.
