The Detroit Lions today selected former Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai in the second round of the NFL Draft.

As the 43rd overall selection, Tavai ties for the third-highest pick for a former UH player. Ashley Lelie was picked in the first round, 19th overall, by the Denver Broncos in 2002. The Tennessee Titans picked Travis LaBoy in the second round, 42nd overall, in 2004. In 2003, Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was picked at No. 43 by the St. Louis Rams.

Running back Joey Iosefa was the last UH player drafted. He was picked in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015.

Got a college degree from UH Manoa, and gets selected in the second round of the NFL draft. Congrats to Jahlani and to all of his hard work.

Awesome. Congrats to Jahlani. His early selection should help recruiting.

Yup. Ditto. The return of drafted UH football players. Important for recruits to know: Your NFL dreams won’t end if you play for “us”.

Crossing my fingers for John Ursua.

Can’t tell if the baseball team is mathematically in the Big West hunt, or actually in IT.
UC-Riverside did Hawaii a favor by taking out UC-Santa Barbara at Riverside. I suspect UCSB is ticked off and going to kick the crap out of Riverside today. Big West is going to be a two-bid league, but finishing second won’t make Hawaii the second team. I don’t bother checking the RPI. It’s depressing. Not sure if Dylan Thomas can pitch today. He only threw 7 pitches on Wednesday, but still, he got up to throw, and yesterday he went 2.2.

Kirby Yates: NL leader in saves with a 0.60 ERA. In the Cy Young hunt.

cappie: According to Stephen’s story, Yamazaki was playing second because of a sore (throwing?) shoulder. On a potential inning-ending double play in the seventh, Yamazaki could only loop a relay throw to first. Unfortunately, two runs scored on the fielder’s choice, so instead of taking a 3-1 lead into the eighth, it was 3-3 and Cade Smith lost a chance at picking up what would have been a well-deserved win.

Ursua Round 7 to the Seahawks.

    Cheeeehooo, Ursua, Seahawks 7th round.

Good news: Seahawks make John Ursua the 22nd pick of the seventh round.

Bad news: Baseball team losing 6-0 in the sixth.

Congrats to John Ursua. Was a long wait for him, but being selected by the Seahawks takes away some sting. Also good news. Well, so far. Wahine water polo leading UC Davis 6-4 end of second period. This is semi-final in Big West Tournament. Irene Gonzalez leads Hawaii scoring with 3 goals.

Congratulations Coach Rolovich. Two players drafted. Just the beginning for this program. The template has been set. I hope the current players (and potential recruits) realize that the opportunity is there if that (the NFL) is their dream. With hard work (on and off season) and focus might have several of potential picks on this roster. Everything is possible now. Unbelievable.

clyde: Thanks. I’m not following the team as closely as I normally do. I still haven’t gotten over how the women’s basketball season ended in the Big West tournament. Temporary existential crisis: What is the point of sports. This NFL draft is a nice pick-me-up. Seattle. Non-sequitir: I didn’t realize Olivia Crawford transferred there.

    12.

Is that you, or a doppleganger? If it’s you, my bold prediction came up one game short. And it’s good to “hear” from you again.
