‘Bows in the pros

Hawaii is well represented in the Alliance of American Football league. Consider:

> Benetton Fonua: The Star-Advertiser’s 2011 Defensive Player of the Year and 2012 Kahuku High graduate played in 43 games during his four-season UH career. He’s now a 6-foot, 234-pound linebacker with the Memphis Express.

> Meffy Koloamatangi: The younger brother of Leo Koloamatangi (now with the Detroit Lions), Meffy Koloamatangi had a productive career with the Warriors. He is now a 6-5, 273-pound defensive end for the San Diego Fleet.

> Blake Muir: His time at UH was brief — four semesters — and one of the seasons was spent as a redshirt. But he started all 12 games at left tackle in 2012 before transferring to Baylor. He’s now an offensive guard with the Arizona Hotshots.

> Tom Mason: After serving as interim head coach at SMU following June Jones’ resignation, Mason joined the Warriors as defensive coordinator in 2015. He now coaches linebackers, including Fonua, with the Express.

> Larry Mac Duff: He is best known as the defensive coordinator of Dick Tomey‘s “Desert Swarm” defense at Arizona. But before that, Mac Duff was helping to develop the same concepts as the Warriors’ defensive line coach for three years in the mid-1980s. Mac Duff also doubled as UH’s special teams coordinator. Mac Duff handles both jobs with the Fleet.

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Phillies signed a spunky outfielder who is not named Bryce Harper.

Johnny Weeks, who finished his UH career last May, signed with the Phillies. He will report to Clearwater, Fla., for extended spring training. He is viewed as being used as a utility player at second third and outfield. He played all three spots during his UH career.

Wild game on Sunday. 3 wild pitches in a row to score Calicdan and tie the score in the 9th inning with 2 outs.
Also the game ending rally was with mostly 2 outs.

    Ekahi, Ichi, Uno, One, Foist.

Wow MacDuff is still coaching. Need to look up Doug Kay and Dave Fagg to see what they are doing now.

Doug Kay and Dave Fagg. Those are names out of the past.
Not sure why, but I’ve always had an image of Doug Kay in a leather jacket. Is that from a media guide?

Coach Fagg is retired as I think both the AD and Head Football coach at Davidson, (alum of Step Curry), he is their hall of fame.

Coach Fagg was classic, my fav line from him was “ no redshirts at the Disco!”

Doug Kay was a classic football coach. Looked like one, talked liked one, walked like one, with a bit of rascal in him too. If I played college football I would have gone to war with that guy.

It seems (looks like) Trapasso has taken the Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitching approach where the “bullpen committee” pitches segment by segment (similar to an MLB All-Star game method). Wu-Yelland first day, Davenport (short hook?) second day, then committee. Even Thomas is in the committee rotation (and not really saved for closing) so the closer may be anyone. Smith so far is a one appearance per series long (very long for this kind of strategy) reliever. I think Ashworth needs work 3 games per series if possible. Trapasso actually has a perfect staff for this kind of strategy. But he also has a good staff for conventional strategy as well (Tampa Bay had to use committee because of injuries and such, ended up surprisingly working effectively). We’ll see how it works out for UH. Might be genius. 3-5 right now though. Longwood will answer some questions.

UH sports have become very mediocre for quite awhile. The Coup de gras was the Hoops loss to Cal Poly! The great hope are the men’s Volleyball. What’s going on AD?
