Hicks’ move pays off

Two significant things happened to Kalen Hicks this semester: 1) He was moved from rover to safety. 2) He was placed on football scholarship.

“He’s a good worker,” said defensive coordinator Corey Batoon, who coaches the safeties. “First and foremost, he has a great workout. He’s very football smart. He has a very good football IQ.”

Batoon praised Hicks as being “a good teammate … which I think is important. On the field, he had a good spring. He’s going to be in the two-deep in some shape or form.”

Batoon said the position switch was based partly on UH’s need at safety (last year’s starters are no longer on the team), partly on Hicks’ skill set.

Hicks is tall (6-3) and fast.

In evaluating Hicks’ spring, Batoon said: “I thought he covered space well. I thought he was pretty good at man coverage. You saw him in the spring make some plays on some of the deep balls. I think he has really good ball skills.”

Foist! Yes, heard Hick’s names mentioned a few time at the Spring Fling!

What was nice to see was both the offense and defense making plays. Yes. it’s still early, but what I saw gives me hope!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

On another note, RIP to “Prince” Neff Maiava, a household name from small kid time and an icon from the world of professional wrestling.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Always good to see DPK’s comments on the blog!
Amazing what he sees from the shade of his tree to the practice field. 😁

I missed out on basketball talk yesterday.

There was a rarely-used reserve named Tre Stovall who made a basketball late against Fresno State in the, I think, a 2000 WAC semifinal game.

    He was fouled.

Phenomenal basket around the rim, considering he hardly ever played.

WAC refs robbed Hawaii of a victory.

Riley Wallace’s finest hour, albeit in defeat.

    Hawaii played Duke-like.

Toe to toe in a very hostile environment.

This was the team with the aforementioned Troy Ostler. Marquette Alexander was on this team, too.

Trying to get psyched about the upcoming series against Cal Poly.

Hawaii wins the tiebreaker against UC-Irvine.

    Okay.

But preseason ranked Cal State Fullerton seems to have woken up and said: “Hey, we’re Cal State Fullerton.”

    We didn’t start the fire.

    We(Hawaii) did.

Prior to the Titans series win, they lost a series to SDSU and a midweek game against San Diego.

It’s pitching injuries; it can’t be helped.

But the lack of offense on Sunday against Northridge was dispiriting.

Jeremy Yelland needed a lot help, but he was forced to be Matt Cooper out there.

I haven’t seen consecutive hit batters since Matt Fisherbaugh.

    Mathematically still in it, though.
