Safety choice

One of the top safeties in recent UH memory — Trayvon Henderson — appears to have reached an agreement with one of the top firms.

Carter Chow, son of Norm Chow, is part of the Steve Dubin-Don Yee firm that also represents Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Henderson is preparing for the Jan. 27 Reece’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Waiting for more hires by UH. Soon I hope

  2. AllG January 2, 2018 10:21 am

Did DSJ get invited to any of the All-Star games? I thought he would definitely have been invited to the Senior Bowl.

  3. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2018 10:22 am

    yup. real soon.

    2018 – Year of the WARRIORS !!!

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  4. A-House January 2, 2018 10:33 am

sure hope Rolo’s “he gives us the best chance to win” is NOT equivalent to Chow’s description of who was #1 QB — forgot the phrase he kept using

agree with a previous poster that M Milton would have “splinter burns” the past 2 years if he came to UH

perhaps M Milton was al’s “holy grail” the way he has played since being moved into the #1 QB position — continued success to him and UCF!!

  5. A-House January 2, 2018 10:34 am

holy moley Andy, Chow’s words popped into me brain — “he’s got the it factor”

  6. Mike 96816 January 2, 2018 10:35 am

Anyone know what ever happened to Cheyenne Sanitoa, the highly touted safety that was recruited from American Samoa several years ago? As I recall, he was the former sprint champion of American Samoa and played in the Polenesian Bowl.

  7. A-House January 2, 2018 10:42 am

disappointed, last year, that neither Cole could improve to really challenge Dru Brown for #1

really want to see Rolo give both incoming QBs a true opportunity to show their “stuff” at D1 level — he has already seen whatall the current QBs on his roster can do

    Howzit Everybody,

    Happy New Years

  9. kama krab January 2, 2018 10:45 am

Gotta say though, if Mackenzie came to UH, he would not have been riding the pine the past two years and we probably don’t see Dru Brown.
Dru Brown was signed during the summer when we wiffed on Mackenzie and had no real backup plan.
Water under the bridge though. Congrats to the young man. Time to move on.

  10. Sangamon Keith January 2, 2018 11:30 am

Just one thing … we didn’t wife on McKenzie. He was committed to us when his first choice, Oregon, passed on him. We had him until the Oregon OC (and McKenzie’s chief promoter) took the HC position at Central Florida. McKenzie had a special relationship with that HC dating back to an Oregon football summer camp, so not to anyone’s big surprise he changed he decommitted from UH. It’s unfortunate for us … but we were always the second choice and it was even so well documented that I read about it in Central Illinois. Hopefully, Moussa and Cordeira bring the same infusion of talent to us in 2018. We now have three solid backups to Brown (counting McDonald too) and that should lead to excellent completion for the next few years.

  11. islandman January 2, 2018 11:55 am

We whiffed on Jordan Ta’amu too, when he graduated from Pearl City High in 2015 and later in 2017 out of JC. A 3-star out of JC.
He always dreamed of playing for UH, per an article.

  12. DaveLetterMan January 2, 2018 12:19 pm

    Morning Tsaikos!
Nobody offered Jordan a scholarship out of high school and then out of JC. He walked on at Mississippi and only got to play because of injuries to the other qbs. If he wanted to play for UH so badly he could’ve walked on here. Besides, recruiting is not an exact science and people’s comments about UH missing certain athletes only come after they do good elsewhere. If they do badly I don’t here people saying good thing he never come to UH. Hindsight is 20/20.

  13. clyde January 2, 2018 1:04 pm

FWIW: I don’t believe Ta’amu walked on at Ole Miss, and he reportedly was offered by Ole Miss, Minnesota, New Mexico and Southern Miss out of JC. Either way, it all worked out for the young man.

  14. islandman January 2, 2018 1:08 pm

    11. ..Ta’amu had offers from Ole Miss, Minnesota and New Mexico. I don’t think they were to walk on.
    3-star out of JC,
    ———————————————————————————————
” JUNIOR COLLEGE: Rated a 3-star prospect by Scout and ESPN … ” Tabbed the No. 4 junior college dual-threat QB in the nation by ESPN … Member of the Scout JUCO Top 100, listed as the No. 99 overall JUCO prospect in the country … As a sophomore at NMMI, threw for 3,014 yards and 32 touchdowns while also rushing for 328 yards and seven touchdowns … Ranked third in the NJCAA with 334.9 passing ypg and second nationally with his 32 passing TDs … 2016 Southwest Junior College Football Conference Player of the Year, All-Region and All-SWJCFC. “

  15. Maddog50 January 2, 2018 1:12 pm

I totally agree with some comments. You can’t offer everybody and needs and existing roster commitments take precedence. Just because a young man does well elsewhere it is not a reflection on the school, evaluation is the huge gauge. This happens constantly. Tom Brady Jj Watt et al are prime pro examples.

  16. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2018 1:12 pm

Looks like Rolo missed out on Cody Fajardo 2.0.

Well, that’s the way it goes, or went.

  17. islandman January 2, 2018 1:13 pm

    11. Your are right, it is not an exact science, but if offered by at least 2 power five schools, he could be pretty good. Nick said on one of the radio shows something like that he thought he was set at QB, so did go after Jordan.

  18. islandman January 2, 2018 1:14 pm

… so did not go after Jordan.

  19. burro sabio January 2, 2018 1:16 pm

If Rolo went after Ta’amu he would have had 3 Jr quarterbacks which is poor planning for 2018. Further, Ta’amu was able to do well at Ole Miss, no guarantee that he would have been able to do that here with the 2017 supporting cast. If you think you spilled milk, wipe it up and move on.

  20. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2018 1:29 pm

Hey, if Jordan’s school is on probation,

can’t Rolo “legally” poach him? – if he wanted to?

  21. islandman January 2, 2018 1:42 pm

    19. …eee-soos, Yes, he can transfer without sitting a year, since he has only one more year to play, etc. MIght be easier for a basketball player to transfer though in similar circumstances ?
    https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/12/1/16720556/ole-miss-sanctions-ncaa-transfer-rules

  22. A-House January 2, 2018 1:42 pm

i know i’m not good at remembering, but seems OL and DBs are in need for UH in 22018 and beyond

some leave, some stay, others transfer in

which “birdie” is most knowledgeable on identifying a local went away and wants to return? must sit out one year per transfer rule?

  23. Sangamon Keith January 2, 2018 1:44 pm

I’m not against Ta’amu … but we already had picked up two juco quarterbacks (Brown & Brownholtz) the summer before Jordan’s sophomore season. We only had the numbers to focus on a freshman QB recruit when Jordan was on the market. Furthermore, given the P-5 interest he was getting, he might not have been interested in UH which already had a strong first year performance by Dru Brown. Finally, did Jordan have the grades for the UH … like it or not, it is harder to be accepted to UH than most SEC schools … big names because of great sports teams doesn’t make schools academically superior to UH. )

  24. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2018 1:49 pm

    #21. A-house.

Your question, in Jordan’s case, was answered

    by # 20, islandman.

  25. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 1:54 pm

Great thing about sports is that you can have an opportunity to come back from a bad season. Not to mention make your detractors “eat crow” for all of their negativism and cynicism. I hope that Dru Brown is reading all of this and working his ass to prove the detractors wrong.

    GO WARRIORS!!

Yeah, yeah. Tomey blew it with Leroy Lutu, too.

  26. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 1:57 pm

Not to mention Tomey also “blowing it” with Kurt Gouveia, Lakei Heimuli, Ladd Akeo, Thor Salanoa…… June Jones with Jordan Dizon, who started for 4 seasons at CU, (the new GA sent to Kauai to recruit Dson, got lost there). The list goes on.

  27. islandman January 2, 2018 2:08 pm

Good to have a UH QB that can run and pass too, like Milton and Hurts. LIke McDonald and hopefully Cordeiro. Dru can run too, but was he limited this past season by the staff ?

  28. boolakanaka January 2, 2018 2:18 pm

Old School Dave…I get what you are saying with your analogy. And I agree Tomey did miss out on Ola, but as to both Ladd and Thor, I’m not sure if they could have cracked our lineup back then…. we were super deep at linebacker, with Alvis, ML Johnson, John Taylor, Anthony Woodson, James Elias….most of those guys all ended up playing professionally.

  29. Warbow January 2, 2018 2:54 pm

Rolo pretty much turned down Ta’amu. He make inquiries with the UH coaching staff said thanks but no thanks. Rolo is going to roll with Brown no matter who shines in camp. Sort of Chow like.

  30. Waikapu January 2, 2018 3:09 pm

Uhhh… Mr. Boola….appreciate your insights as a former player but didn’t Ladd Akeo and BYU smoke Hawaii’s butt every year he was there? I think it was 1983 to 86. BYU won the national title in 84. To say he wouldn’t have even cracked the starting lineup at UH, when his team killed yours, and then went on to win a national championship, is a bit of a stretch, no?

  31. islandman January 2, 2018 3:10 pm

The offense needs serious overhaul, averaged only 18.9 pts in the MW conference games, 2nd to last of the 12 teams. What are the reasons ? It starts with the QB making the plays more consistently. Didn’t say he didn’t make some plays.

  32. H-Man January 2, 2018 3:27 pm

Warbow, I fear you may be right.

  33. Boolakanaka January 2, 2018 3:51 pm

#29, with all due respect, Ladd did not start any games during their National Chaampionship run, mostly special teams, and was a part-time starter in 85 and 86. While certainly their teams were better, Noga, Taylor, Johnson, all played on Sundays, and Anthony and Alvis were in the CFL, I think it’s safe to say, from a position basis, there were no certainty that he would have leap frogged over any of those guys…..

  34. clyde January 2, 2018 3:59 pm

Lutu was UW-bound and even a full-court press at Washington Place (by the Guv) couldn’t sway him to stay home.

  35. ai-eee-soos January 2, 2018 4:48 pm

    # 33.

It was a long time ago, but I think it was his father who

insisted that he go to UDUB, because he “wanted to see

his son play in the Rose Bowl”.

Don’t know if he got to the Rose Bowl, but the Huskies team,

back then, were the big dogs in the PAC-8 / PAC-10.

  36. Boolakanaka January 2, 2018 5:01 pm

34–You are correct. If I am not mistaken, they played in back to back Rose Bowl games, in 81 and 82, and then played in the first two Aloha Bowls.

  37. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 5:46 pm

Passing over Kurt Gouveia will remain the ultimate recruiting blunder by UH IMHO. Toney has also stated this, regretfully. Gouveia wanted to be a Warrior, but was evaluated as being too slow as a DB. UH didn’t factor in the athlete in him and putting on 30 lbs down the road. The BYU DC at the time Fred Whittingham came to Waianae HS to sign Kurt, as I recall.

Believe that Ladd Akeo played his freshman year at Cal, before transferring to Provo.

But, that’s life. Mistakes are made and you move on (all parties).

  38. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 6:05 pm

Dru Brown will learn from this past season. I’m sure the entire team will do the same. Rolo and his staff and players are taking action to not repeat 2017.

Not like things in this City/State. Drove by Ala Moana park today and the remains of that bus stop destroyed by that falling tree branch weeks ago, seriously injuring that poor visitor, are still sitting there roped off. Some things no change hea.

“Whoa, UCF’s Milton did it all singlehandedly in beating Auburn. Shows you no need one strong supporting cast, just one one good QB!”

  39. Na Alii Pride January 2, 2018 6:17 pm

#29 and 32 – Akeo went to BYU? Didn’t he go to Cal? And i thought UH wanted him bad? Maybe I’m confusing him with someone else
    ?

  40. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 6:30 pm

BTW, I back up UH players because they represent the school and State of Hawaii.

Tonight’s Channel 2 Sports was headlined by M Milton and some former Mililani Trojan, now at Bishop Gorman. Yeah! Da mainland more bettah! Gotta get off of dis rock!”

  41. Old School Dave January 2, 2018 6:32 pm

Na Alii Pride: Ladd initially signed with Cal as a freshman (Joe Kapp was the HC?), but transferred to BYU after his first year at Berkeley. Gee, that was back in the 80s. Getting old, yeah?

  42. Boolakanaka January 2, 2018 6:36 pm

40…Yup, you are indeed correct. John Haina, my old neighbor, and former Alii, yes he went to Aiea HS, before transferring to KS, was a large factor in his decision to initially select CAL.

  43. islandman January 2, 2018 6:39 pm

So how long do you as as a HC give a QB a chance to learn from the past and improve ? All of fall camp and a whole 13 game season ?

  44. cappie the dog January 2, 2018 6:55 pm

Can somebody confirm a rumor that Troy Aikman wanted to play at UH, but Dick Tomey didn’t think he was a good fit?

    Did I read this?

Did I have a dream about reading this?

  45. boolakanaka January 2, 2018 7:47 pm

43….never heard that story or rumor. I do know that despite transferring from Oklahoma to UCLA, Barry Switzer was quite helpful to get him to a program that emphasized the pass than the previous option team at OU, and he made affirmative arrangements for him to play for Terry Donahue.

  46. azwarrior22 January 2, 2018 8:03 pm

UA coach fired. ASU coach already fired.

  47. Music Man January 2, 2018 8:19 pm

Isn’t the head coach (Frost) at UCF taking his whole Coaching staff to University of Nebraska who hired him or am I wrong? If so, What’s going to happen to McKenzie Milton? Transfer to Nebradka? Hmmmm

  48. suckkabooya January 2, 2018 10:42 pm

    #44

I think it (Aikman’s purported interest in transferring here) was an urban legend. It had something to do with Hawaii having a solid quarterback in Gregg Tipton. We heard it from a friend, who had heard it from an Uncle who……. well you know it goes. At least that’s the way I recall the story.

  49. islandman January 2, 2018 10:44 pm

In an interview, Milton said he would wait and see in the spring what kind of offense the new UCF coach will use. I assume if he doesn’t care for it much, he could transfer somewhere.

  50. burro sabio January 3, 2018 5:48 am

Mr. A-House, you wanted to hear “tweets” from little birdies. Some are reliable, some come from canaries originating from the nether regions of the coal mines in the lower intestinal tract of people’s bodies.
