Kemp added to Chiefs’ playoff roster
There’s another reason for Hawaii football fans to be interested in this weekend’s playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Marcus Mariota’s Tennessee Titans.
Former UH wideout Marcus Kemp was signed to the Chiefs’ active roster, according to the team’s web site.(Kemp story)
“Just blessed and extremely grateful to everyone who has been involved,” Kemp said in a text to the Star-Advertiser. “I have loved ones watching over me and I only hope to make them proud. I am excited to get on the field again and do whatever is needed to help this team.”
Kemp, who completed his UH career at the end of the 2016 season, was not selected in the 2017 NFL draft. But he signed a free-agent contract with the Chiefs. He was on the Chiefs’ practice squad for all but one week, when he was on the active roster against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6.

Hmmm, not sure about that as Troy started at OU as a freshmen, so he would not have been considered an “extra” QB. If this story has any validity perhaps it’s because we played OKL in 83 and perhaps as a HS Senior, he heard about the game which was a near sellout and very well played by UH.
Guess I’ll be root’n for the Chiefs. Go Marcus Kemp !!! Hope you see playing time.
On a totally separate note, there’s an article in the print section of the sports section today, “Left out of title game, UCF says it’s the champ,” that is nowhere to be found in the digital subscription. Now why is that?

Aikmen finished college career at UCLA — yep, started as a frosh at Oklahoma, broke his leg, replacement was very good and established himself as an “option” QB in 1985 forcing Aikman to transfer to UCLA — Switzer decided to accept new offensive scheme leaving Aikman out
we were at that game in 1983 — kept Oklahoma starters in well into the 4th quarter — back then, for whatever reason, UH played all big name visiting teams “tough” be it USC, Nebraska, etc.

away from LSU reports Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle. Brent adds the deal could be finalized today.
A&M’s offer is considerably over $2 million per year, full autonomy on defense and “anything Dave needs to do his job to the best of his abilities”.

Good to hear Aranda is doing well. It seems a lot of coaches who leave UH does well after their time in Hawaii. UH must be a good starting point for coaches wanting to get into college coaching and/or eventually further their careers.
I guess it’s a positive. UH Rainbow Warrior Football is a good training ground for college coaches looking to fill their resume.
In anycase, good to see previous coaches do well after their stay in Hawaii.
#13 the selection of Arizona/Arizona State and Utah/Colorado provided the PAC 8 and then the PAC 10 with two minimum criteria to meet Conference requirements:
1. Excellent Research Universities (UH qualifies on this one) and
2. Geographic proximity with other new school to match the original eight school pairings ie., USC/UCLA in LA, Stanford/Cal in Bay Area, Oregon/OSU in Oregon, and Washington/WSU in Washington. (UH fails … no easy partner for pairing)
BYU was also considered when Utah sought membership, but “no Sunday” games/matches at BYU nixed that deal. Colorado/Utah was alternative since the are in adjoining states in Rockies … close enough.
Congrats to Marcus Kemp … one of my all-time favorites.
On separate topic … I thought new UH assistant coach or coaches were suppose to be named this week. Any rumors of news coming?

My supervisor was just talking about Marcus Kemp a couple of days ago.
He lamented that Kemp caught the ball against his chest more often than his hands.
Is this accurate?

We need more 1100 yd, 8 TD, 15.1 yds avg for 73 catches type of receivers who catch anyway with their chest or hands or any combination.
Per a previous post, yesterday or the day before, I think that Derby just retired from HFD in December.
Kemp liked to box out the defender with his body and catch with his body.
With the addition of Byrd, another incredible playmaker, (considering Ursua is completely healthy) the combinations of the receiving personnel can create so many different packages its going to be hard opposing defenses to prepare for everything. Even Keliiliki can be used as an “H” (like Collie’s brother when he was with the Colts) and Reed can be used in the slot (like how Sproles is used) in some packages. I think Collie can line up anywhere, and so can Ursua. Kumoku Noa was getting good at working his way open on timing routes and even though Timoteo wasn’t targeted much, I thought he was the best second and third level blocker on the receiving corp. They have three very capable Tight Ends that each bring a different dimension to the possible package. We’ll see which of the speed guys on the roster steps up to become the field stretcher and which one of the big receivers steps up to become the vertical iso target. The short and middle routes should yield a lot of YAC with this group and because of that opposing LB’s have to line up a little deeper so I can see it helping the run game depending on the game plan. It’s all up to the protection so I think we still need one more JC OL and hope that Hensley can at least play okay. I believe Dru Brown will improve because he will be pushed hard by at least two other QB’s so we’ll see what kind of a competitor he is. He toughed it out against Michigan so I expect that same kind of toughness (mentally) during fall camp. Practice hard everybody and to us the fans, make some room on the bandwagon. Go Warriors
What good is it to have good receivers when the quarterback cannot deliver in a scheme designed for a power running offense? I wonder if the coaching staff will effectively implement an offense that capitalizes on the talent they have at receiver and running back. Last season’s scheme was awful.
15….with all due respect, as I’m both an alum and supporter, but UH is not considered as a top research institution relative to most of the other pac 12 schools. While we have some excellent programs, overall, we are not on the same level. Endowment is a primary driver to research and we really lag, by way of specific example: Stanford 22 billion, USC 5 billion, UDub 3 billion, Colorado-Boulder 600 million, ASU 550 million— conversely, we are less than half that —around 280 million.

Congrats to Kemp— I was a doubter primarily because of his poor catching technique—using his body rather than extended hands. But he is good enough for the NFL so I was wrong. Speaking of being wrong— Dave Aranda is now the highest paid assistant in college football— has a new contract for $2.5 Million per year!
According to the news, Aranda’s contract is for a 4 year guaranteed term— unusual for assistants.

Boise State: The program has announced the addition of
Chad Kauha’aha’a as their new defensive line coach.
Chad spent the past three seasons at Oregon State, where he coached the defensive line and picked up the title of associate head coach for the past two seasons. He’s also coached the defensive line at Wisconsin, Utah, Utah State, and Weber State.
Chad Kauhaahaa is replacing a veteran D-line coach Steve Caldwell who is headed to Arkansas. Caldwell earned $250,000 and Kauhaahaa, with his Pac-12 and Big 10 experience should earn around the same (still less than his OSU salary, but lower cost of living in Boise). That’s a boom for Boise State’s defense, that is already stingy. Kauhaahaa’s coaching experience (minus Baldwin HS) has been entirely on the mainland (Weber State, USU, Utah, Wisconsin, OSU) and has found success there. Wonder what happened to Kevin Clune and where he’ll pop up?
Again, low cost of living up in Boise which is attractive.

Re: Clune. FWIW, I once read where then-OSU head coach Gary Andersen said he was taking over the defense (early last season) and lamented his choices of coaching hires. When Andersen left, I believe another defensive coach was named interim HC instead of Clune.

Jeezus, at least spell the guy’s name correctly if you’re going to keep mentioning him.
Too much is being made about the way players catch with their hands or their body. I see a lot of NFL players catch with their body also. You don’t always need to catch with your hands…..in fact, if you stick your hand out and catch the ball, the defender can knock the ball out by separating your arms. If you can get your body between the defender and the ball, your body can be use as a shield. Catching the ball with your body also allows you to secure the ball better and be able to absorb a hit.
Picture this and try to run this thru your mind…..a ball is coming face level. Coaches will tell you to stick your hands out, catch it and then pull it in. Sounds like good advice…..BUT if you jump up a little and catch it with your chest, you are throwing your whole body in from of the defender and there is no way for him to bat the ball down. He can only tackle you and hope you drop the ball.
The first scenario in which you use your hand….the defender can come from behind and either separate your hands from the ball or he can reach over and bat the ball down. The receiver using his body will make it much more difficult to defend.
If Kemp has the bad habit of catching with his chest(which some fans like to make a big deal out of) why do you think the Kansas City Chiefs put him on the roster. If he can catch the ball, then he can make the play. It shouldn’t matter how he catches the ball..as long as he catches the ball.
Agree with 44. And when Kemp needs to catch with his hands, he does use them. Example was the game winning pass from Woolsey in Nov. of 2014 vs, UNLV, in which the play started with 1 second left on the clock..
Speaking of football, two QB’s that UH played against this past season, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen are projected to go high in the NFL draft.
While Alabama guards, tackles, both offense and defense, do well in the NFL, their qb’s seem to suck. Why is that?
With Kauha’aha’a going to Boise State, hopefully Joe Seumalo considers UH…….instead of staying at SJSU……

Who said it was wrong catching with the body? If you’re tall enough to get up there and do it, why not?
You can read ST’s column on Corey Batoon right now. It might be blocked later on.
Batoon said the key is to teach each player the basic concepts and coverages, then expand the responsibilities if needed.
He will be evaluating the personnel, matching schemes to the players’ skills, and implementing a base that can easily expand.
Batoon said he was pleased with UH’s 2018 commitments, noting the defensive players have multiple skills.
