Good for Zalopany. Saw something on her work with PAU.

Flo VolleyBall put out a poll on who is the top blocker in the NCAA 2017. Maglio is on the list at 19 out of 20. Her stats show otherwise. She leads (in the group of 20) in kills and points. 8th in Total blocks and 9th in blocks per set in the country.

Here’s the link if you want to vote. There’s also a thread on VolleyTalk.

    1. Maglio’s stats are inflated largely because of the poor BW competition UH plays. Some statistical inflation also due to her being one of the two main options on a team lacking in terminators, whereas a lot of other teams have more weapons/balance on the floor. I doubt her stats would be as good if UH played in the Pac12 or Big 10, etc. That being said, she was the only non-ACC/SEC/Pac12/Big12/Big10 player on the list, so that speaks volumes about her play.

  3. FitTrainer October 17, 2017 7:38 pm

I get you aren’t a huge supporter of Maglio. While stats aren’t everything, the numbers don’t lie. She is contributing a huge amount of offense and defense. She is by far and away the most prolific blocker in this mediocre conference this year.

The coaches are asking a lot of her and she is stepping up. She is deserving of recognition. Some of the middles on the list are not even close to her numbers (blocks or kills). She has also blocked well against some of the top-ranked teams they’ve played. Her lowest blocks numbers were against Fullerton and Riverside.

  4. Maverick October 17, 2017 8:26 pm

    4. Accusing someone of not being a supporter of a player is a typical response when people can’t take criticism.

The point is that statistical analysis requires context. Just because she has high numbers doesn’t make her ranking on the list seemingly too low, which is the point of your original commentary. The issue is that Maglio doesn’t face a gauntlet of top 25 teams like many of the other women on the list, so it is difficult to see how her #19 ranking is so out-of-place. Over the long run, playing against better competition will lead to more modest results than playing against the Big West, so I stand by my view that her stats are inflated relative to the other players on the list because of the level of BW competition. This doesn’t mean Maglio should not be recognized. I said her recognition speaks volumes about her play, but you conveniently seem to have ignored that. I’m just not as bothered by her ranking on the list.

And can you stop with cherry-picking the data? Maglio also had great blocking matches against UCSB and LBSU, and less-than-stellar blocking against San Diego and BYU. The issue is the overall body of work and against what level of competition.

  5. Cindy Luis October 17, 2017 8:39 pm

3-4. no need to bicker and Maverick, i didn’t see the response being from someone who can’t take criticism.

IMHO it doesn’t matter if it came against BWC teams. the point is she got the block. Ever;y match is different so you don’t always get the same matchups. She’s been very consistent the past few matches.
As for her stats being inflated … perhaps … but since she doesn’t play in the other conferences mentioned on a nightly basis you’ll never know.

    Tuesday results

    25) Northern Iowa def. Drake 25-14, 25-17, 25-15

    Big West Conference
Long Beach State def. Cal State Fullerton 25-22, 25-19, 25-20
    UCSB def. UC Davis 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24

  7. Maverick October 17, 2017 8:56 pm

    5. I did see that; it is a typical defensive response on online blogs. And it does matter that the block came against BWC teams. Over the long run, it is easier to get blocks against that level of competition than against Power5 competition with taller front lines. If UH played a bunch of teams with 5’5″ front lines and Maglio was averaging 5 blocks a set, I would hardly say she is otherworldly. Your competition greatly impacts your productivity and how you are evaluated in these top 20 lists.

And why is it that disagreements on this blog are now bickering? Seriously, if this blog is some sort of Kumbaya forum, then it would defeat the purpose of open discourse. This kind of debate is what makes the blog interesting.

  8. FitTrainer October 17, 2017 9:11 pm

And I stand behind my belief she should be higher on this list. There are a few players with very low blocking numbers and little offensive stats. I didn’t say she should be number one, but I also see her as deserving of the recognition (based on the stats).

Clearly, this list (and most similar lists) is highly subjective, but based on the stats she deserves to be on the list and rank higher. While it may be true her numbers might be lower than if she played in one of the Big conferences, but they might also be better. You can speculate, but you do not know. This is what makes these lists interesting, debatable and fun.

As for the cherry picking of stats, call it what you will. I know her stats for San Diego and BYU. I also know most players stats tend to get better and more consistent past pre-season. I believe her blocking and timing is improving as the season goes on.

As for conveniently ignoring your “compliment” of Maglio. I guess, it is difficult to see it as a compliment, when almost every time Maglio has been mentioned on previous posts, you have conveniently pointed reasons (and yes, I am paraphrasing) why she isn’t as good as many of us think she is. It’s hard to see where you have been a supporter.

I try to remember that it is not personal with you (towards Maglio). You are a ‘realist’. You also, if I remember correctly, said Nicki Taylor shouldn’t be a higher ranked All-American than many believed (for various reasons), and that Hawaii’s rankings are where they should be (and shouldn’t be ranked higher than many had wished- last season or this season). You tend to agree with whoever is doing the ranking or polls. My view is while the polls, lists etc. are a measurement, they aren’t perfect. We can speculate as to the reasons why or why not. Stats are not everything and my intention was not meant to convey that. There are a lot of intangibles that aren’t measured (like how valuable a middle Maglio is because she is asked to do more than contributing just blocks, how Kahakai is valuable to the team because of her leadership and how despite how Hawaii was ranked last season, just how good a team they could have been).

In any event, to those of you who see Maglio as a top blocker, go give her a vote!

  9. FitTrainer October 17, 2017 9:20 pm

My apologies Cindy. I also didn’t view it as bickering. I was trying to debate with Maverick. I respect his opinions and where he is coming from. We view things differently and I don’t always agree with his reasoning.

I will not be offended if you see fit to delete my comments.

  10. rabbit ears October 17, 2017 9:47 pm

Just glad we got Emily Maglio. Everyone of us will miss her next season. As far as differing opinions, our are pretty minor.. Check out the Football blog. Those folks are ready to scrap.

Wish we were in the PAC 12. Then Emily could put a end to this debate. Not sure about her numbers but in the past Two NCAA tournaments her talents were very apparent.

  11. Kaimukian October 17, 2017 10:12 pm

I see Mags as at LEAST a 2nd team All-American this year..Anything less than that is a snub in my opinion. Really hoping the Bows finish strong and get to the Tourney in this her senior year, but if not..I can say that although frustrating at times, I’ve never been this pumped about Wahine Volleyball in a while and am enjoying the hell out of this season so far lol

  12. H-Man October 18, 2017 5:02 am

Hey, toot our horn! Emily Maglio, 1st team All-American!

  13. Ki October 18, 2017 6:49 am

The only way Mags makes it on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team is if her team makes the NCAA Tournament. The only way that’s happening is by winning the auto bid as conference champ. Their chances of winning a bid outside of the AQ is slim to none which means another HM All-American mention for Mags (e.g Taylor was well deserving of 1st tram accolades last year but only made 2nd team because Hawaii couldn’t get past the 2nd round).

  14. Ron October 18, 2017 12:05 pm

I think about what might of been if Greeley was not injured and Megan Huff had stuck with volleyball and developed like Emily has. Oh well, next one up!

  15. Ki October 18, 2017 12:33 pm

Is Kalei eligible for a medical redshirt ? I wish Huff had stuck it out too. That would have given us another back row threat and a viable right side attacker.

  16. H-Man October 18, 2017 2:37 pm

I see Wahine winning out and make the NCAA tournament. Might as well take the positive path. Go Wahine !!!

  17. 2left October 18, 2017 4:59 pm

    14. If Kalei was healthy and Megan was starting at opposite, I’d say Wahine would have been a lock for a bid. The problem is that UH is not a loaded top P5 team, so “next up” will often be a huge dropoff.

On another note, saying that a player’s stats are inflated because they play in a lesser conference or team is an oversimplification. Too many variables in volleyball. For example, maybe the P5 MHs wouldn’t have as many blocks if they had to play with Granato and Koelsch next to them for other teams to attack. Or maybe not as many kills if other teams could shade the middle against them like they do against Mags. The fact is she’s often carrying the entire team for those 3 rotations when she’s in. That’s something the other MHs might not have to do, and should be something to consider in voting.

The Flo Volleyball poll may be just for fun, but check out the the top 3 results thus far.

    Regan Pittman, Minnesota 34.25%

    Emily Maglio, Hawaii 32.72%

    Rhamat Alhassan, Florida 5.77%

    GO BOWS!

  19. nomu October 18, 2017 10:42 pm

Looking forward to seeing Maglio in the Olympics.

Howling can be as good as she wants to be.

Last time saw Williams, thought she might be the most improved player, hitting balls with some velocity. Hope she is healthy and ready to go. She will be a good one.

  20. Bleachercoach October 18, 2017 10:42 pm

Maglio is our most valuable player this season. If we didnt have her we would be 6-13, not 13-6. Our passing and offense would have been so much better if we had the surgery-free Greenly when she was a Freshman. She could cover the whole backcourt and we wouldn’t have to fuss with our rotations as much. Megan Huff would have been a legit All American last year. We would have had Taylor, Mitchem, Maglio, and Huff. What a lineup. Granato would be regulated to coming in as an offensive fireplug here and there. This year it could have been Huff, Maglio, Granato, and a maybe healthy Greenly if she didn’t reinjure during preseason preview practice/scrimmage banging into Clare-Marie…Koelsch, Castillo , Sibley, and Ross would be great subs but not starters….Those are the What-if’s….Maybe just maybe in the future we might have that magical team on the court bearing injuries or transferring….Go Bows!! Go Maglio!

  21. islandman October 19, 2017 8:08 am

Wahine work on their serving 1.5 hrs each practice, per today’s article. Looks like it’s not that easy to serve the ball in consistently, even with the slower serves. They often go into the net or float over the baseline.
But blog posters say serve the ball in, as if it is a simple thing.
Every Wahine has more SE’s than SA’s except Ross and Claire.
Claire .970, Gianna and Ross have the best serving %.
Cal Poly has 95 SA’s and 95 SE’s. so far. Adlee has 23 SA and 16 SE.

  22. islandman October 19, 2017 8:10 am

    name s/b Clare-Marie

  23. Kaimukian October 19, 2017 10:43 am

    21. You are right serving in consistently is not easy, but IMO there is no bigger momentum killer than serving it out after winning a side out or natural points.

Also it is baffling to me that we let Castillo serve (9 SA, 28 SE) over McKenna Ross. I remember seeing Castillo serve out and be subbed by Ross immediately afer to play back row. Perhaps the coaches see something in her serve in practice that we don’t as fans?

  24. Kahuna October 19, 2017 11:40 am

Yes…serving is not as easy as you think. Coaches call area of where the player should serve and sometimes they want you to target a specific player or area and that player is only one foot off the line. Serving is like pitching….you don’t always have complete control of the ball.

wonderful article on Kendra this morning. Very happy she earned a starting job this year. Very deserving of all that she getting.

  26. Warriorfan October 20, 2017 10:12 am

Just hope Kendra’s hitting improves last half of the seasons she has been well under .200 and UH needs her to hit at least around .250 from here on out.

  27. Ron October 20, 2017 10:20 am

Concur with rabbit ears. I would like to see Kendra go line and high hands more. Don’t dink, hit it has hard as you can!

  28. H-Man October 20, 2017 5:19 pm

Watching the CalBears v Washington St match and I see Emma Smith is the starting libero for the Bears.
