Ahikatsu wins tickets

Avis has selected Ahikatsu as winner of four tickets to Friday’s baseball game. Please text me at 256-0223 with the name to leave at Will Call.

Thanks for playing. And happy belated birthday to Koakane.

Sorry, no show today. Blog host is meeting with his CPA.

But we’ll have a live show for tomorrow’s practice, starting probably at about 8 a.m. (What? You thought I was actually going to show up on time?)

At Leila’s suggestion, please submit questions we may ask. And, while you guys are doing all of our work, you also may suggest the guests. And by guests, we mean UH football players or coaches. Much as we’d like, our budget of about 84 cents doesn’t allow us to bring in Megan Fox.

Thanks in advance.

    Haka,

Im now a little worried how the weather/conditions will be for the Wahine tomorrow. They’re not used to those frigid conditions and even if it’s not snowing, the air is nice and chilly.

I’m not a Kinesiology major so I don’t know how that weather reacts to the body especially for players with old/recent injuries like Majam and Gonzales. Also, this will be a first for freshman Jessica Iwata and Kaia Parnaby as far as playing in weather like this.

    brashton satele

how does it feel to get back on the practice field?

in your own opinion, what are your chances of regaining your 6th year?

has the ncaa given you any kind of feedback in recent days?

what kind of feedback did you get from any of the pro scouts at the pro day combine last week as to your chances in the nfl this year should your petition fall through?

best wishes. no matter which way your path is laid out, make the most of it.

  21. BigIslandkurt April 6, 2010 9:31 am

There’s several intriguing players I’d like to hear from.

Austin Hansen (Possible Starting tackle this year)
Hogan Rosehill or John Lister (young RB’s who may surprise some people)
Kamalu Umu (STUD DE who will make big contributions)

    BIK

    Kazz,
Hopefully the experienced players will help out with the do’s and don’ts on the road. I worry about catching a cold or flu. Like teams getting sunburn here it seems all our teams get sick and bring it back home and it lingers with the teams for a while.

No playing in the SNOW! 🙂
The 25th team in the nation doesn’t need any distractions!
    Go Wahine!

Kazz – and if this year hasn’t seen enough wacky weather, my cousin in Fredericksburg, VA says it’s supposed to be 92 today! Maybe it’s all that hot air drifting down from DC.

#3 NYUH the guy is right, they have made a big mistake with McNabb, if he was as good as the skins think he is he would still be in Philly.

  27. Kazz April 6, 2010 9:41 am

    Haka,

I was just worried about the effects on muscles and joints to even think about the most obvious risk… COLD OR FLU SYMPTOMS!!!!

Not to mention they’ll still have to deal with the weather in Boise. Saw that the Boise State softball crowd was treated to decent weather over the weekend so hopefully that sticks through until Sunday.

Hopefully Coach Coolen has the team working out in a decent and warm facility or vacuuming their hotel rooms or dusting it. 😆

    Good morning everyone!

…ahhh, is there a new beer brand called “Responsibly”? 😕

  32. Don Weir April 6, 2010 9:45 am

    From Yesterday’s Blog (Updated)

    SteveM and Tsaiko Road Travellers,
I was asked by UHAD to coordinate some road information (and be the ground contact) on the following games/venues:
    1. West Point
    2. Las Vegas in between games 2 & 3
    3. Boulder Colorado

I will be posting the information here as well as sending it out to all of the e-mail contacts that were assembled over the last year.

    Ticket information will follow.

    As of right now:
    1. West Point will have a very interesting tailgate on the Academy grounds prior to the game. This will be put on by the UHAA. It looks as though tailgate continental b’fast, then watch the cadet parade formations, then serious food/beverage tailgate (all one ticket)
    2. I am looking for a venue for Football Alumni and supporters post game
    3. Coach McMackin has agreed to come down to the CAL in LV on Wednesday of the in-between week and give fans/supporters a Quarterback type review of the West Point game and a brief look at Boulder. This is a fundraiser for the Na Koa Endowment. It is in the early planning stages but Boyd Gaming is a great supporter so look for a great evening.
    4. Boulder is hosting the Colorado Aloha Fest, game weekend. There is a Ho’ike with Frank Hewitt and Daniel Ho on campus on Friday. Special rates at the Comfort Inn so go to the Na Koa website or go to the Colorado Aloha Fest website for more information on this.
    5. UHAA is again hosting the UH tailgate before this game. More information on this as plans develop.
    6. I am working on the post game reception for FB Alumni and all supporters very near the stadium. Again, a little early for specific venue and times but the information will be here asap. This is a great opportunity for you to talk UH Football story with some of the great names out of the past.

Tiki’s in Waikiki just sent me an e-mail. All proceeds from the Warrior Pride cocktails (margaritas) at their Cinco de Mayo celbration will go to the Na Koa Endowment.

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid April 6, 2010 9:46 am

McNabb a bad trade for the ‘Skins? Not according to this writer:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/04/05/mcnabb/index.html?xid=FanHouse&icid=main|main|dl2|link6|http%3A%2F%2Fsportsillustrated.cnn.com%2F2010%2Fwriters%2Fpeter_king%2F04%2F05%2Fmcnabb%2Findex.html%3Fxid%3DFanHouse

One scenario could be: Campbell is traded, McNabb is number one, Grossman number two and Colt is number three, being developed for the future. Who knows?

If they wanted to cut or trade Colt, why wouldn’t they have done it by now? Maybe he’s next?

Whatever happens, I just wanna see Colt get his shot.

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

Don Weir, mahalo for keeping the away games festivities hopping.

Kazz, the cold on the Wahine SB players muscles is a bigger concern than catching a cold. They have to warm up (stretching, etc.) before playing. You actually don’t catch colds from the cold, but from viruses.

I vote to have Dave Aranda interviewed.

Hope Brashton & Pepa can play!

    Slugger,
Good point on catching a cold. Maybe colds seem to be mistakenly associated with cold weather because you are indoors more and therefore have more contact and close interaction with others. Anyway, let’s hope the Wahine stay healthy and continue swatting the coconut!
    Go Wahine!

    RE: Colds and cold weather.

For a few months back in school I worked part time at a job that had me going in and out of a large industrial sized “walk in” freezers all day long. Sometimes I’d spend up to 20 minutes in one, with proper clothing though, and then out into the usual Hawaii weather. Some people get the sniffles and start developing cold like symptoms. I did for a while but it went away.

Looks like Colt dodged the bullet (again). This is probably what it means when they say ‘it was meant to be’. Colt needs to really show them what he’s got in pre-season. Good thing he’s healthy. It’s a new system and it is time to establish a new hierarchy.

Might not be the case next year. If the Redskins are in the same predicament, and a QB of Clausen’s caliber is available, then watch out.

  53. mctruck April 6, 2010 11:53 am

From yesterday’s HA article on the UH Relay for Life. Nice to see Dana do this. Any of the other coaches/teams do community service on a regular basis?

First-year Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias has her team participate in monthly community service. Among other things, players cleaned a taro patch, painted parking lines at Kapi’olani Park and inspired a devoted, and extremely mature, following at Leahi Nursing Hospital after introducing them to basketball aerobics.

The current wahine batting order has multiple personalities, three to be exact: the Frosh, the Latinos and the Seniors.
EACH GROUPING CAN CARRY ITS TEAM.

Last series against New Mexico State, the Seniors came out of their self-imposed hybernation by banging HRs (5) doubles (3) and rbi’s (15)–Yoshikawa, Kanani, Amanda and Katie.
Grimes hit over .500, 3 HRs a double, 8 rbi’s and was named WAC POW. Taualii went 7-9 in the last two games. Yoshikawa banged a HR and Kanani went hitless but put the ball in play, scored runs and continued being the league leading pinyata (13) by taking 3 for the team. Puu-Warren has more dings on her body than the GM dummy.

Gotta love of our Frosh–Kelly and Iwata. 27 HRs, 2 triples, 20 doubles, 88 hits and a whopping 61 RBI’s in 39 games! They lead or are top ranked in every major WAC batting category. Like most frosh, there is always ying and yang–between the two, they have 54 whiffs. And although Majam is a golden glove fielder at 1000%, Iwata has more boots on D than the warriors FG kicker.

Lastly, but certainly not least we have the steady play from the Hawaiian version of the cha-cha-cha–the three amigas–Gonzo, J-Rod and 2A. They form the nucleus of our order–#4-5-6. All .300 hitters or better. 2A has slipped below the .300 marker but is close. They can hit for average or power (20 HRs), score runs or drive them home.
In Hawaii Wahine softball terms–multi-personalities make for good team chemistry and championship form.

  75. mailepua April 6, 2010 12:57 pm

    correction: amigas–#3-4-5 in the order.

The Crusaders need to start getting back to the core missions of the school. The days of relying on a football dynasty as the school’s “claim to fame” are over. The school needs to focus on developing a well-rounded study body that displays strong academics, faith, and community service in addition to athletics. Schools like Punahou, Iolani and Kamehameha offer students strong academics, etc. in addition to strong sports programs. Top football players will now go to those schools because they have so much more to offer than just a good football team. Failure to win state championships are not seen as “failures” at these other ILH schools but it seems that St. Louis has put so much emphasis on having a top notch football team, that when the football team fails, they don’t have much else to be proud of.

If we go back to the core values of St. Louis, everything will be better in the long run.

    DPK on # 33,

I think the reason they didn’t cut Colt is that he’s very inexpensive to keep (something like $400,000 in this-his 3rd year). I believe they really wouldn’t trade him yet because going on IR last year made him fly below everyone’s radar and he wouldn’t command much. I think the idea is to see if he plays well in pre-season, then they can get something decent for him. If he has a poor pre-season, he’s cheap to keep & they could jettison him by next year’s draft as they’ll probably try to get a high profile QB next year. In any case I just want him to get a legitimate shot somewhere. Even being 3rd string in Washington won’t yield much PT unless someone gets injured.

Sad to hear about what’s going on at Saint Louis School. Not close to the situation up there, but it seems that something’s gone haywire up on the slopes of Kalaepohaku. No off-season training will only hurt the program. Feel bad for John Hao and his coaches. Coaches don’t make a lot of money, but do it for the love of the game and working with the kids. In the end, it’s always the kids that lose out.

  121. Curt April 6, 2010 7:14 pm

Colt isn’t safe yet. After securing the best pro QB he could find, I believe Shanahan will now try hard to get a young elite QB to groom. So I’m thinking that they’re looking at Colt right now and trying to evaluate his potential. Hopefully, he shines like we know he can.

If I recall correctly, Shanahan is bringing in Sam Bradford this week for a look. He’s already checked out Tebow. If Shanahan drafts any QB, Colt is history with the Redskins. Nail it Colt!

  122. Curt April 6, 2010 7:19 pm

I like Colt’s chances against Rex Grossman. I’ll definitely be disappointed if the Redskins draft a QB. We’ll find out soon enough.

  123. al April 6, 2010 7:38 pm

i am thinking that the skins draft an ot that they need more than a sam bradford. campbell will be traded anyday now.

the skins then leave grossman and brennan to duke it out for 2 and 3.

then next year they draft a qb, possibly moving up the order with the extra draft pick they get for campbell.

if colt brennan can somehow breakout this year when an opportunity exists then they might not pick a qb next year.

    al on # 124,

I think you’re right. They (Redskins) are crazy if they don’t draft an OT to bolster the O-line to protect whatever QBs they have. Even if they like Bradford or Tebow, they’d be crazy to draft them early after making the trade for McNabb. If they were going to do that, they shouldn’t have made the trade & should’ve kept the draft choices. What may throw a monkey wrench into the works is if they trade Campbell immediately for maybe a 2nd round pick (doubt they could get a first-round pick). They could draft Bradford if he’s around and go for an OT later. Or could draft an OT early and try to get Tebow in a later round. Or do you think Tebow will go in the first round?

    St. Louis Crusaders –

I am not “in the know” regarding the Crusaders, but what’s going on there seems very strange.
First, Pat Hamamoto named new Principal of the all boys school…? Sure, great name recognition, however, it’s not like she comes out of a well run public school system in Hawaii.
Second, Ulima Afoa replaced as Athletic Director without hardly any warning. What did he do wrong…?
Thirdly, Afoa replaced by one of the school’s science teachers. Wow!

I’m wondering what the alumni really thinks about this. One of my bosses is a St. Louis graduate, and let me tell you, he ‘aint happy about what’s going on.

I mean thinking back to when Cal Lee was running a tight and succesfull trip, things have really gone down hill.

Darnell Areceneaux, flat out RUN OUT, after ednuring GREAT success.

Delbert Tengan was a highly succesfull head coach, lost like one game, the state championship, and HE was shown the door.

Like Arceneaux and Afoa, Tengan dismissed with seemingly NO reason.

Then John Hao, trying to instill something NEW, not given ample time to succedd in my opinion.

What in the world is going on at St. Louis?

Really, I’m wondering what guys like Timmy Chang, Olim Kreutz and Dominic Raiola are thinking….?

  131. Pauoa Boy April 6, 2010 10:20 pm

Don’t know why the Skins would work out Sam Bradford, that’s a waste of time. He will be the Rams number one pick after they shit canned Marc Bulger. Redskins with #4 will go OT since Chris Samuels is gone or if Suh is available I would take him. Bringing in two veteran QB’s pretty much cancels out using a pick on a QB in the first couple rds. They say Tebow is first round talent, I doubt it. He’ll probably slip in the mid to late rds. and maybe the Skins pick him up, but again I highly doubt it. Colt needs to bring his a game or I guarantee you he’ll either be gone before season begins or ride pine and then be dealt later. I dunno, its all up to Colt how well he’ll make us remember who #15 is more than #5…IMO

SLH is in a new administrative era under Walter Kirimitsu and Pat Hamamoto. They are simply centralizing their theme to sell their total package in order to boost enrollment.
Kirimitsu has full support from an aging Board short on alternatives but long on financial woes. In a nutshell, Kirimitsu is running an agenda with carte blanc power. He is Obama-like in stocking his administration with his personal selections that meet his philosophies for growth and institutionalized loyalty he believes neccessary to sustain its direction.

Is he stirring up a hornet’s nest? You bet.

Coming from a SLC ohana that carbon dates back to the River Street campus I can tell you the prevailing sense of local State politics that has recently permeated into the fabric of Bertram Hall will not be an easy pill to swallow by SLC traditionalists.

For those whom are familiar with the school or its alumni, know that this represents a new wave of institutional power that was seeded during a period of transition and the vacuum created was ripe for takeover. Give Kirimitsu credit for grabbing the bull by it’s horn and moving it in a direction for desired outcome. In the process he has repaved new roads and broke with traditional yoke.
While Kirimitsu has flashed administrative skills both in his rise and in revamping his mission statement– many question his choice of political selection surrounding the Pat Hamamoto appointment, among others.
His secular approach to administration is bound to draw fire.
Hamamoto, while rich in resume, is neither inspiring or parochial and is viewed as more clerical than motivational.
As things go at Kalaepohaku, the dust will settle before the ground starts to shake. For every action there is certain to be a reaction. At a school that is seeped in centron-type tradition there is no earthquake proof insurance for its administrative leadership.
Wise or not so wise, good or bad, Kirimitsu has awakened a prideful soul that will indeed, resonate a sprititual roll call….we shall see….memor et fidelis SLC.

    Howzit Everybody,

I think the winds of change are blowing through the SLS campus. As Blue Powder has aluded to, it is time to get back to being student athletes at SLS not just athletes. The cleaning house period has started and from my veiw point is a very good thing. Ulima Afoa is a good man but never really had control over the athletic department. John Hao is a SLS guy but never had control over his own team.

The winds of change are blowing and when those winds dye down, I think SLS will be in a much better position then there are in now.
