Oceanic has an app in the App Store called Oceanic TWC. On Friday, they showed the Kahuku-Farrington game live. It is now available as a re-telecast. I believe they will doing this for all the games on OC16.
The app is free (not sure if you have to be an Oceanic customer).
The UH should be doing the same. There’s a large audience out there that would love to have access to UH sports. If you look around, you’ll see that other big time programs have apps out there. Don’t have the resources to get it done? Tap into the UH Info Sci department. Otherwise there’s some smart Tsaikos that can do it. Got to think big time.

The UH cam do all kinds of things for its fans. Link to the UH home page and Rainbowtique, video clips of sporting events, promos from their major sponsors, fan polls, etc.
By going to the Info Sci department and using students, they give these students valuable learning opportunities.
There are over 35 million iPhones and iTouches out there and countless other smartphones such as the BBs, Pres, etc. The UH should be out there reaching out to its fan base.

Hopefully Bryant Moniz is physically and mentally ready for this game. This game will be very pivotal to see whether Hawaii will be making another appearance in the Hawaii Bowl. They will need to right the ship with this game or else it might be a long season.

It is not known at this time whether a tsunami was generated.
If a wave is generated, it would arrive in Hawaii at 6:50 tonight, the warning center said.

I think the WAC is really screwy this season. Teams are playing hot and cold like the plumbing has gone awry. So who knows? After last week, you’d think LaTech, as a much more physical team, would walk away with the game. But then, I don’t think Hawaii was playing more than 70% of their potential.

wonderful news to share with you. Before I start I want to wish Miss A House a happy birthday and many many more !
Words cannot explain the appreciation and care for a GREAT lady that Miss A House represent as the love and respect from blog members ALL over Tsaiko Nation is evidence in reading the post’s of admirers and well wishes.
Kind folks of Aloha this October 28th of 2009 will mark my 17th year as a professional male educator at the Al Wooten Center. This day is not like no other day of ANY job anniversary BUT the length and dedication stands out as I have done 17 GLORIOUS YEARS with out missing ONE day of work, lateness or calling out sick.
A clebration is on at the CENTER as the 28th day of October will be “Cliffs Day” as parents will be cooking their favorite hot dishes for me as pies, cakes, cookies will fill my front office door. Children will be bringing gifts, making me creative cards of appreciation, poetry letters with string ballons attached tied to my door and window office.
Board Directors, Adminstrators and Professional Colleagues will be in attendance as my emotions reflect on the experiences and YEARS of professional service that All started with you GREAT folks of the Aloha State.
As I count down 21 days before this milestone achievement I write before you as an accomplish student athlete who is appreciative in the experiences he gained from the OHANA and went out to leave an indelible impression to society with his inner city children he leads by self example.

some guy on the street outside the stadium was selling flags and bamboo poles.
i already had a flag so i bought a pole for $1. i figured if i get it taken away, its $1 less i’d put into a slot machine.
amazingly, the bag checkers didn’t say a thing. the information desk at which that i asked for directions didn’t say a thing.
none of the ushers walking up to the seats said a thing.
not sure how an usher down below us saw the flag.
maybe a wsu fan walked down and complained because they had nothing else to do during that first half except watch us score and me wave the flag.

“WAILUKU – A Maui book club and local senior volunteers were among the voters who propelled Hawaii to win 50,000 new books from a national nonprofit.
First Book, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., recently announced that Hawaii had won the third annual “What Book Got You Hooked?” campaign. The program runs once a year and asks readers to share their memories of the first book that made reading fun and to vote for a state to receive 50,000 new children’s books to be distributed to programs serving children in need.
Online voters cast more than 90,000 votes to make Hawaii the top vote-getter.
“Isn’t it wonderful? We’re such a little state. We’ve got heart though, and we did it,” said Rae Landes-Mizukami, a retired teacher and librarian who urged the 11 or so members in her book club to participate in the online voting.
Readers were allowed to cast one vote per day.
Landes-Mizukami said her book club membership has changed over the year and currently has about a dozen women from around the island. Members agree to read a book suggested by one person and then discuss it during their monthly meeting.
“It’s really nice because you get exposed to something you might not read,” Landes-Mizukami said.
She said she and fellow club members were pleased to see Hawaii rise through the ranks of states with most votes. At one point, the Aloha state ranked as low as 45, but over time, the number climbed as news about the campaign spread.
The Kaunoa Retired & Senior Volunteer Program also reached dozens of volunteers plus family and friends to participate in “What Book Got You Hooked.” RSVP Director Dana Acosta said volunteers decided to actively participate after learning about the campaign during a TV news broadcast. “There are lots of volunteers who love to read and even volunteer to read to children,” she said.
Acosta said Kaunoa was buzzing with people talking about the campaign and Hawaii’s rise to the top. “It’s really chicken skin that at a grass-roots level you can make a difference.”
First Book will distribute the books in the coming months to programs across Hawaii serving predominantly children from low-income families.
Between now and the distribution, programs that meet eligibility requirements can register with First Book to receive books.
Information is available at http://www.firstbook.org/register. When the books are made available, registered recipient groups in Hawaii will receive an e-mail notification inviting them to apply for books.
Although voting has concluded for the 2009 campaign, visitors to the “What Book Got You Hooked?” Web site can make a donation to provide brand-new books to children in need as well as share their favorite books and memories year round.

When talking about BCS conferences, it should be pointed out that teams in BCS conferences that play in small stadiums (Washington State, Baylor, Colorada, etc.) have a LOT less money than those with big stadiums. There is a *huge* disparity even within conferences…and the difference in money really shows up in the facilities, recruiting, and on-field performance.
I knew that Texas made a minimum of $5 million before their latest stadium expansion (and latest ticket price increase), but I hadn’t realized that they were up to $7 million per home game now!
When talking about how teams like Baylor make about $1.3 million per home game in their 50,000 seat stadium, we have to take into account that includes all concessions, parking, luxury boxes, advertising revenue, etc. UH doesn’t get the parking or concessions, Aloha Stadium doesn’t have luxury boxes, and UH doesn’t get any money from the big ads in the stadium.
50k, 55k is “small”…. 😯
People here likes to lump BCS conference teams together, but the disparity between the richest BCS conference teams and others in their conference is shocking. Texas makes more than $80 million more than Iowa State and they are in the same conference!
Remember, they share the conference TV contract and split the BCS TV money equally…and even without that there is an $80 million difference within the conference!
How much can a team make from luxury seats? Kansas will make $40 million from their luxury seats! $40 million!

And the difference in revenue between the Kibbie Dome and the Smurf Turf has been growing every year. BSU took their BCS money and built luxury seating in their football stadium, which brings in a lot of additional money for them every year.
Because of a certain less-than-stellar former UH AD, UH had to use the BCS money to balance the budget instead of use it in a way to bring in additional revenue.

I just looked it up and the estimate ticket revenue for FY09 for UH is $7,193,886. That is for all sports, and basketball and volleyball play a lot more home games than football. So, maybe half of that comes from football–if we estimate $3.5 million for football, then that comes out to $500,000 per home game.

The key reasons why luxury boxes bring so much money for Universities:
1. Companies use them for big clients or rewards to key employees.
2. 80% of the luxury box fee is *tax deductible*. Companies can advertise that they support the local University while getting a huge tax write-off.
3. The “required donations” to qualify for the luxury box purchase are 100% tax deductible.

People can buy the club seats and luxury suites, deduct 75% to 80% of the price, and then scalp the seats for huge profit. The University gets their money and people are happy to pay big money for seats in luxury suites…without knowing that the luxury suite owner is writing off 80% of his costs!

It is sad that the regular people who buy a ticket do not get a tax deduction, but the rich folks who buy the luxury suites (and possibly scalp the seats to others) deduct almost the entire cost.

Are the profit figures you’re posting for stadium/football revenues the gross dollar amounts? or is it the net profit? If those universities manage their own stadium facilties, you’d have to take into account the cost to manage, clean, & maintain the facilities which would reduce the overall take. Do you have a figure, even a percentage, that most facilities end up paying for the maintenance & management of the stadium?
When people talk about the UH taking over Aloha Stadium, do we really know what the net profit is? How much money needs to be allocated for major maintenance? I don’t think there’s money in the University system to handle taking over the stadium.
Wonder if they’ve finished painting? Did they get the safety issues addressed?

That was a slight on the part of the Advertiser not to mention the most popular blog host.
Practice tomorrow morning! No pads, but Coach Mack said they are going to run the same drills that they did today. Got to get ready! Even at 7:30 a.m. it’s muggy out there.

As you know, the State of Hawaii owns Aloha Stadium which means any income from the sale of “luxury” box seats or “premium quality seats in an enclosed area” goes to the State. Those schools which own their stadiums get all the gravey!
How can we change the current revenue “sharing” method of Aloha Stadium? I know that JD is really trying to secure changes, but with this tight economy, I cannot forsee the State giving up that kind of income.
One way is to increase ticket sales and JD has implimented several ideas to get more ticket sales. Of course, if the Warriors had a perfect record with many 3-5 star local players, I can see the increased sales, but this is easier said then done.
Should we contact our Legislators and make a concerted push to have more funds diverted to UHAD? After all, with UH playing, the State’s income must be well into the 6-figures for each game.
Perhaps the most expensive is for UH to build it’s own stadium for football and other venues (rental for music groups, private parties, etc.).

I especially enjoy The Warrior Beat blog and Leila Wai’s videos of UH Warrior sports- especially football. More than an online meeting place, Stephen Tsai’s unique blog has brought together hundreds of Warrior fans from all over the world as a realtime ohana and emphasizes support for the SUCCESS of UH Athletics. The live streaming Warrior Beat interactive interviews on Tuesdays is also a unique feature that I enjoy very much.
This blog and it’s ohana have helped me become an active supporter of UH athletics and a season ticket holder even though I live on a neighbor island. It is a bright spot and a regular part of my daily activities.

I do not know how or if the parking at Aloha Stadium is considered revenue. What I do know is that every single parking stall in the “reserved” section has been bought by UH.
The parking rules, ADA stall set up etc comes with the ultimate approval of Jim Donovan.
We had a problem at the last home game and I contacted the stadium authority and the assistant manager in hopes of solving the issue.
The response was that although they wish they could help, UH purchased all of the reserved stalls and will allocate and configure them according to their own will.
It may have been different in the past where that $3/5 fee was collected by the Authority, but currently I guess with the purchase of a parking pass etc, that money goes to UH.

In a way you are still correct though, UH still had to purchase the stalls from the stadium.
I guess when selling the passes they come out ahead and is a better situation than not getting any revenue from parking fees.

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, It’s 3:34 am in the morning as I wake up from a deep sleep reading the remainder of posts that you folks wrote. Coming to this blog and meeting a majority of you has been the fulfilment of a dream that I wept on Center Court at Blaisdel arena in 1981 when I was introduce for the last time on my final senior basketball game as a “Rainbow Warrior”.
As I stood there hearing thunderous applaudes with tears of appreciation running down my cheeks MY first thought was to ONE day come back to this WONDERFUL Island become SOMETHING that you folks could be proud of your former athletes and to “GIVE BACK” to the OHANA in which you GREAT folks have given me”SO MUCH MORE” !
Coming October 28th that “SOMETHING” will be fulfilled as I cannot thank you good folks of Hawaii Nei enough as that moment will be a proud day as I did it the RIGHT way with hard work, UNBELIEVABLE DEDICATION, professionalism, task mastering and the MOST important part “Sharing the aloha to others so that they to can be enrich with the wonderful spirit as we gather together for the OHANA to share the TRUE meaning of “POLYNESIAN HOSPITALITY” !

Recruitnicks ought not despair, as Washington is still in the running for some top high school offensive lineman. Expect a verbal commitment from at least one prospect later this month, while another target, Micah Hatchie from Hawaii, has set up a trip and will be here in December. Hatchie actually grades out slightly higher than Rowland, based the film we have seen and comments we have heard. UW is also looking at some JC talent to help the depth on both lines.

Regarding your post #633 and iwonderwhy’s posts, the parking model could be extended to the stadium. iwonderwhy pointed out how UH did reserve certain parking areas in Aloha Stadium. UH pays for all the stalls and re-sells them at a premium. Aloha Stadium gets their money and UH makes some money–JD discussed this earlier about UH does make a decent amount this way. Of course, it would be nice if UH got all of the parking money…
The Stadium Authority is in charge of the regular maintenance of the stadium, but they don’t seem interested in making big upgrades such as premium seating or luxury suites. So, what if UH made a deal about how *UH* would pay for certain upgrades of the stadium if UH got the money those club seats/luxury boxes made for UH events? The Stadium Authority would still get the upgrades to the stadium to make money on other events (concerts, etc.). The NFL *expects* luxury suites and premium seating in all stadiums and this is one reason why they will make far more money doing the Pro Bowl on the mainland than at Aloha Stadium. Luxury boxes could makes millions each Pro Bowl game.
Of course UH would have to come up with the money for the upgrades. A club/premium seat section would probably come first because that is a lot cheaper to do, but money could eventually be fundraised for the luxury boxes too.
