Thursday's practice

Greg McMackin said he expects quarterbacks Tyler Graunke and Inoke Funaki to both play against San Jose State. He said announcing the starter will be a “game-time decision.”

* * *

Linebacker Blaze Soares is not expected to play this week. Even before he suffered a tweaked ankle yesterday, it was felt Soares probably would benefit from more rest.
It has not been decided whether running back Daniel Libre (sprained right ankle) will play this week.
But defensive tackles Rocky Savaiigaea and Fale Laeli will play.

Today is John Fonoti’s birthday. Clockwise from the birthday guy (in black shirt) is Chris Leatigaga, Tui Tuiasosopo, Fale Laeli, Keith AhSoon and Tuika Tufaga.

Here are Graunke and Blaze:

Watching the National League pennant races unfold — and by fold, I’m not talking about my Mets — it makes you wonder what would have happened if two key players, the Phillies’ Shane Victorino and Brewers’ C.C. Sabathia, had followed through on college plans.
Both had made backup commitments to UH: Victorino as a slotback, Sabathia as a two-sport athlete who would have tried out at tight end.

Wideout Dylan Linkner is sporting a new look:

Former UH running back Mario Cox is enrolled in school and doing well. His football scholarship was allowed to lapse, but he still was invited to remain on the team as a walk-on. He would have been a fourth-year junior this season.

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

I’m not the greatest Baseball fan around, but the Tampa Bay Rays are surely this years feel good story. What an amazing turn around and all in the toughest division. They remind me of the 99 Warriors.

I’m glad the coaches are playing it save with our wounded. We have a ton of season left and it would make no sense risking them for the rest of the games. The toughest part of the WAC schedule is yet to come.

If we are to entertain any dreams of another WAC championship, then this Saturday must be won decisively, by at least two touchdowns. We are at home and it all rests with the gears of the offense. That’s my only worry.

They seem to have adressed the ST units and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of improvement there, but I would really like to see our offense put together a complete, four quarter effort. I hope we’ll get back soon to the days of relentless attacking.

For all those reasons and more, this is my most anticipated game sofar.

  15. bighilofan2 September 25, 2008 6:43 am

    Garrett,

Great post yesterday about the SH blog on Manti Teo. got me tinkin.

So one new coach, Gerke, tryin fo contribute. ok, i heard stuff about da guy in odda contex. but da bloggah neva have to rub it in on da new coach, cuz da truut iz Manti’s attitude wen he came to last summer’s UH invite, hiz vibe wuz already made up an wuz picked up by odda invites who was watchin da vibe….

like da national debt, nobody like talk about real prolems cuz no like make da vibe wurse, but fo me,
i just like say to Manti Teo, who I don’t know, and da bloggah, who i don’t know, and to some of his cousins I know,

To each his own. I Manti I wish him as well as he can achieve to be..
Da bottom line for me… he is not part of Warrior Nation unless he wants to be a part of us. I have more Aloha for those who want to be with US.

He can always change his mind. God Bless him!

    Go Warriors!

  17. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 6:51 am

If Ching Nursery continues this balony trouble, he’s only waisting his money. Once his appeal has been denied, precedence has been established and further appeals should not stop UH from proceeding with installation of the turf. He can waste his money in the back rooms, if he wants to. Does he have any kind of case to further throw wrenches into the process?

Am I right or wrong here?

    Morning gang-
    SJSU arrives today?

After the Weber St. game, I was impressed their team, QB and Bulldozing FB, plus Bulla Jr.
They have the potential to take the Big Sky conference title this year.

That conference offers FREE viewing of select games each week, and doohhh!, missed the Sac. St/ Weber game on the live coverage.

    http://www.bigskytv.com

This is pretty sweet that this offer is out there for bringing in viewership.

ST: Regarding your comment from yesterday… Yes, apparently I had to learn that the hard way. At least I got them back, even if it was AFTER I borrowed a book from my other friend. I ended up having twice the load to take to class, but that’s better than no books at all.

That is why you have deadlines.

  26. Nalani September 25, 2008 7:54 am

I’m a regular lurker, but not too frequent blogger. My son Kahai is #65 OL, RS Fresh this year. Most of you know that already, but I feel like its polite to introduce myself when I walk in the room, so to speak.

I’ve been travelling so much this summer that I’ve missed a lot of stuff. Go check our blog (bottom corner on home page http://www.naleo.net) for some pix of Na Leo’s recent exploits in Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.

Got to meet some Tsaiko’s at practice, and met D1Shima at the SL game last weekend (KS JV vs STL). My younger son Pono #25 plays DB on KS JV.

Anyway, can’t wait for Saturday’s game. We need a win v SJSU to get the momentum on track. Remember, if last year’s team had to play flawless from the beginning and beat quality teams early and on the road, we probably wouldn’t have been 12-0. This team just needs time to gel and win. We fans can help and support!!

  27. kapakahi September 25, 2008 7:59 am

    ST…

SO, is Mario “retired” from football?…or at least UH football? How does his situation affect the APR for UH football?

Either way, it’s good to see that Mario is not an academic casualty. Hopefully he can finish up soon with his BA degree.

    Mahalo!

  28. kapakahi September 25, 2008 8:01 am

    ST…

BTW, whatever happened with spring practice prospects Quentin Beaver & Les Soloai? Neither is listed on the updated UH football roster on the UH Athletics website.

    Mahalo!

  29. 2left September 25, 2008 8:07 am

    From Ferd’s article this morning:

“In Tomey’s tenure at UH, even through 4-6-2 and 5-5-1 seasons, it sometimes seemed all they had to do was turn on the lights in Halawa and 40,000 would show up. Even if it was only out of curiosity. Of course, back then UH football was an event.”

So an obvious solution, of course, would be to turn it back into an event. It’s all about one word, “tailgaiting.” From early in the day without the flea market, and then again after the game, late into the night.

  30. pomai September 25, 2008 8:11 am

I wonder If Ching Nursery continues with this, would it be because they want that specialty licenses to come into play for all of the future projects which totals out to a lot of money.

  31. pomai September 25, 2008 8:19 am

When I first heard that we had landed Mario Cox I thought that we had gotten our star back for the next few years, big powerful runner with the skill to juke them out of their shoes, too bad it never panned out for him. I’m glad he is still going after his degree.

    Gud morning Tsaiko’s/Tsaikettes-

Kapakahi…Quentin was told that he needs to drop a significant amount of weight before re-joining the team! He’s in a situation like I believe Nate Ilaoa was…u know check into camp at 360 plus pounds…but he dropped 80 plus and became RB…an awesome one at that! Quentin is such a wonderful young man, comes from a good family…and he’s been working hard in trying to get his weight down. According to my hubby, the Defense needs a Quentin to plug up the middle!

  36. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 25, 2008 8:49 am

Let’s be sure that we all understand the situation as it stands right now.

The Appeals Hearing officer did NOT rule on the merits of the original appeal – that the University issued an contract to a unqualified contractor. The ruling yesterday was on an procedural appeal by the University that Ching’s appeal was filed too late. She found in favor of the University.

That stopped Ching’s Nursery from going forward with its challenge so as it stands now, the University will initiate the work order as described in yesterday’s post..

Ching Nursery can file another lawsuit directly to the Supreme Court stating that the merits of their argument based upon lack of proper licenses and, by extension, lack of qualifications should override a procedural decision based upon lack of timeliness.

This will mean more big bucks spent for the legal beagles on both sides.

If I were advising them, I would tell them to drop this particular case and then go back to the Contractors License Board and properly initiate the changes in the rules & regulations which includes public hearings.

These issues have been discussed extensively by Tom Mui, BHF2 and me. The next step is to come up with a plan to make sure that this debacle does not happen again. If changes properly initiated under existing state laws are not made within DCCA, then we’lll be to go to the Legislature to get them to codify the licensing process. BTW – this is done in other professions such as doctors, dentists, lawyers, CPAs.

Once again to clarify a statement in yesterday’s blog: Ching Nursery did NOT drop their appeal. They lost the appeal on procedural grounds.

Will stay on top of this. Have to leave for the Stadium Authority meeting

Stretch – give me a weeks notice.

  51. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 9:55 am

I’m sure Manti KNOWS he’s a star, which does not imply that he’s arrogant, but he knows he’s a star. Maybe UH didn’t grovel enough at his feet and his family is talking down our coaches? I don’t know the whole story, but I’m not sure I like it.

We don’t need superstars in our system, just high quality kids for serious depth, who love to be Warriors, the only way to get the Super Ohana going again.

This will be the first game we will see it and everything will fall into place.

We already have a bunch of high quality kids coming in and, of course, I would like to have Manti on the team, but he won’t make or break our program. Isn’t he going on a church mission after High School? In that case there wouldn’t be a pay-off for a long time.

Our players rarely come in as stars, but many of them turn themselves into one, while staying very humble and down to earth. Colt is the Nr.1 example.

  52. homey ⑤ September 25, 2008 9:58 am

  57. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 10:19 am

    Hi, Bulla,

Must feel great to see your son blossoming like yours does. Makes you realize what life is all about, the circle of life. It’s a cliche, but so true.

Boy, they sure take their sports very serious in Florida. My daughter tells me that my grandsons, 5 and 6 years old mind you, are being recruited by different leagues in football and soccer. I think that’s kind of nuts at this age, don’t you think?

  58. homey ⑤ September 25, 2008 10:25 am

    chawan – no pictures!

Stretch – I was wondering why DPK’s pants looked so padded.

  59. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 10:26 am

Both my grandsons made 5 and 6 goals in their last soccer games, that was in the first quarter. They must have gotten grandpas genes.LOL.

In flag football nobody can catch them, they’re as fast as protons, so the other kids are getting frustrated and tackle them, too funny.

    Well, enough grandpa bragging.

  60. tommui September 25, 2008 10:26 am

Stretch: Some of the older Tsaikos (no names) might be interested in this breaking news….
I recall that yesterday’s CC at Camellia, I was the only Tsaiko there!

So … Any plans on producing a Tsai-ko/Nā Leo CD? 😀

homey – engineers definitely don’t need to know how to spell. Hubby sure doesn’t.

The recruitment of the little kids goes back aways too. I remember when my daughter was on the same vb team as Bob Coolen’s daughter and his wife was the coach. She said some of the youth baseball coaches were trying to recruit her son, who was in pre-K/K at the time. He’s now in 7th grade and not attending Punahou. 😀

homey – or hubby. bean counters are the same as math majors, right??

  73. XxFaithxX September 25, 2008 10:49 am

First of all, congrats to Manti and his family…he is big time and deserves the national recognition.

    Secondly, Lava, RE: #44

I felt the same when I read the fathers comments. Like when he said that UH’s offer was #28 or something like that….it seemed as if he was of the mind set that UH is back-water (in comparison to the BCS schools – and hes right because UH struggles with recruiting monies, just had a transition to another coaching regime, Mack was probably extremely busy with all types of things; we all know what they are, etc….BUT you figure that since he’s Kama’aina, he would understand what THE HOME TEAM is going through)

When Gerke did what he did (do we really know?- and yes, what he did was stupid) what was the dads response? “don’t tell me he’s from home”….I dunno about others, but to me, it sounds like he was embarassed of his “home” and the people from there.

But I digress, BIG PROPS to the Te’o family for having a “Plan” and executing it to a Tee…from Kahuku to Punahou and now, BIG TIME BCS school…just don’t forget your roots please….

P.S. One last thought and sorry for going “Off:….working 12 days straight can do it to you, heh…BUT please encourage local HS kids to stay home…Because…

All That’s Gold Does Not Glitter.

    Back to the grind…”poof”

    Good morning-ish everyone!

Another day of getting up and hunting for food like in my younger days–times have changed somewhat, though 😐

Bulla — have a good trip and honeymoon… and give my regards to the Beast! Honeymoon, huh? Well, good thing you waited–a honeymoon sandwiched by two Beast football games is pretty special!

Can’t make it this week, homey. Thanks for the tip though, we’ll have to pick up some for our TVgate. You should try that beer sometime, I think you’d like it. It’s similar to Red Stripe I would say.

  84. homey ⑤ September 25, 2008 11:17 am

I’d like to see a tall receiver (like my man Avery) lined up as a tight end. Would be good to have a big receiver for those short or down the middle plays. This may take the LB’s out of the play setting up a delayed pass to the RB out of the backfield…ack, there I go again, acting like a coach…I think I’ll go back to being a politician since it’s easier to speak in circles.

Like I said I can’t really taste stuff, but I get sensations like sweet, salty, and pepper. I can barely tell the difference between an apple and an onion, for example. It’s hard to explain. But as for beer, I like stuff that isn’t heavy and quenches thirst without making you more thirsty. Azteca and Red Stripe are like that. My wife says both taste really good in a “beer” sense. Try ’em both. Let me know what you think.

Like you, I am more interested in the student athlete who chooses to play for Hawaii and reason that I will not read the “Home grown” section in the paper. It would be interesting if any parent would like to comment about the press coverage for their child in the area they attend school.

I know that many have no interest in staying home for whatever reason and good luck to them. Some want to stay, but no scholarship available and reason for the “walkon” programs.

The desire to be a UH student athlete is a very strong motivator to do well in school and on the playing field.

  119. Kekoa September 25, 2008 1:08 pm

A-House ~ You have to remember my Alaskan fisherman, some of those kids had to go elsewhere to play were discards from a previous administration and recruiting crew. Some were also not prime time players and a smaller school was better suited for them. So when you see them do well in the small confrences, that’s every mother’s son strapping it on to represent Hawaii anyway he could.

Now for the ones who got away, that’s different but sometimes when you peel away the layers of truth…well there’s prolly more to it. Home grown sometimes gets below the surface.

In the future, it looks like Coach Mack has his net set to haul in the best of the best local and Poly-wide players. I’m glad he has their academic interests at heart also.

  120. lab rat September 25, 2008 1:28 pm

homey what did you do to gigi???

    17 more to go.

  121. homey ⑤ September 25, 2008 1:29 pm

A-House, Kazz – I’m different from you 2 in that I read the homegrown reports because I do want to see how our local kids are doing at other schools. The desire to stay home and play for the home team does not matter to me. What matters is that they have the opportunity to further their education and make a difference in the life path that they take.

I’m sure we have many friends (Bulla, d1, Barry, etc) that have their sons or daughters attending school on the mainland and proudly playing for the school’s sports team. I will support them as I will support those who stay to become Warriors.

It doesn’t matter what color you wear as long as you remember where you came from.

  125. Kazz September 25, 2008 1:42 pm

    Homey,

I understand. Unfortunately for me I have had a few BAD personal experiences with people I know closely (outside da blog) that have opted elsewhere and have made it their personal “vendetta” to make sure that they get the word out for as many Hawaii kids leave home to play elsewhere and sad to say that the sole reason is for athletics.

That’s all I will say about that.

I do want to stress that I do skim through the “Home Grown” section but I don’t really have much of an interest in it. I don’t have kids and maybe if I do that will change my interest should he/she gets involved with athletics (that is there is any $$$$$ in the budget for ANY kind of athletic program for public schools left by then 👿 ) and they start thinking about their options.

For now, I only just have a vested interest in da green and white.

  126. Kazz September 25, 2008 1:45 pm

Speaking of “H’s”. I had my fourth UH magnet stolen off my car a few days ago…

  133. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 2:01 pm

    A-House (106),

Not much chance of that, unless they would be recruited by Hawaii one day, very far in the future. They have been fully assimilated into Mainland life, even though, my daughter tries to keep some of the Island culture alive. They even have become Gator Fans (shutter) through their school. ( Jacksonville is rabid Gator Country).

My daughter is a contract specialist for Navy Civil Service, currenly finishing her MBA and her future lies in Washington D.C. My grand children will therefore go to Mainland Schools to college.

As for me, provided a few things will work out for me a few years down the line, I hope to live 6 month in Hawaii and 6 month on the Mainland. We shall see how life plays itself out.

  134. lab rat September 25, 2008 2:02 pm

I rarely read homegrown report because I don’t follow those teams. It is good that the students are having an opportunity to get an education no matter where they come from or where they choose to go to.

I am a University of Hawaii sports fan. I support and have an interest in the students who choose to play for Hawaii no matter where they come from. And because I develop an attachment to these athletes. I try to follow their careers if they choose to go pro.

    Re: Homegrown Report

It is always good to read about the players from Hawaii and how they are doing at their respective mainland schools. Many of them did not have scholarship offers from UH or other Hawaii colleges. If they want to continue playing sports, they have to go the mainland. You can’t fault any of them for that.

    RE: Local talent.

Stretch summed it up best. Of course no one in their right mind can blame the kids for going elsewhere. We can’t keep all of them home.

But I’m in the same boat as Lab Rat. We are around UH all the time, we can visit them at practice and cheer for them in person at the stadium so the natural attachment is there and the pride for the local kids that stayed home is even stronger.

So for all the keiki that play elsewhere, best wishes and go represent Hawaii and NEVER FORGET YOUR HOME.

For da home team, “WE MUST PROTECT DA HALE!!!

A 1000 pardons for not acknowledging our meeting this past weekend. Standing out in that sun really took a toll as I was already not feeling well going in. I was down for the count after that.
Your younger son and his buddies played well and came up with the win that day. Perhaps things might have been different if SLS had their 9’6″ QB taking snaps but, oh well, a better team would have overcome that. Now both teams can turn to their favorite past time- beating the Puns!
Anyway, it was nice meeting you and your hubby. Please continue to post comments here and maybe we’ll see you at the practice field!

Kazz – I agree with your post but for me it’s not only an attachment to the team but an attachment to the player. I personally know my kids friends who are playing on the mainland. As for the Warriors I personally know Cadiz and Andrews. Oh and Deptula for the Wahine soccer team.

I was watching the first game that JJ coached SMU against Rice. Things looked so promising as the jumped out to a 13-0 lead. I thought that he was going to be able to have SMU heading in the right direction, but right now, it looks pretty bad.

  244. Nalani September 25, 2008 4:25 pm

Thanks for all the luv from the Tsaiko Ohana. You guys are terrific. I went away for the day and came back to all kinds of aloha.

We will make the tailgate for sure, as long as I can find you guys. Shouldn’t be too hard. With the special parking changes we lost our spot from the last several seasons and were homeless the first game. So this is a nice option.

Lastly, I need a way cooler Tsaiko name…..any suggestions?

  245. bighilofan2 September 25, 2008 4:25 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos again!

Vincent Ching, or rather his partner Gifford Chang, thats who filed the protest under the Ching Nursery (parent company’s name). Ching’s nursery are nice old people who sell flowers. Vince is a housing kind contractor, I think.

So I’m guessing that Vince was really huhu with UH Procurement Office. Remember how they set out the bidding for just one month? I’m guessing he’s thinking the Procurement Staff at UH is a bunch of shibai. And he thinks of himself as a UH supporter, can drop Ben Yee and Na Koa’s names just like dat.

Vince is talking like he thinks he’s doing the State a favor. I just like tell Vince, go take a look at #36 above by WassupDoc.

Cuz, da truth is you stay messing with all us. We just like fix da field. now.

BUT TO DA UH STAFF, VINCE MAKES A GOOD POINT TO ME: I GOTTA TELL YOU, WHY YOU GET ONE CROWN AN GOING LEAVE EM IN DA GROUND?

i know, dats a side issue, but da bradda stay feelin like you guyz change da rules at da last minute. i wondah why he feelin like dat?

  246. Kazz September 25, 2008 4:30 pm

But like I said, cuz, you stay messing with us, Warrior Nation, not just UH Procurement Office. Not this time, braddah, not this time!

You no mo lawyer, so no cost you $ right now, just time. But going cost you more then $ if you keep being undecided. I telling you right here, publicly, in a really nice way, pau already! Take on the next one, not this one. OK? Pretty Please!

btw, Gifford neva call. An I checked wit DCCA, he no mo lowyah. You can surely tell I stay holding back, because I want to believe you.

The Maui Kitchen Cook was never out of business. It’s still a small mom and pop kind of store. Not wanting to expand etc. It has gotten expensive over the years. I can get you a box on my next trip over. No health food, but real ono.

I think I should stock up on the magnets as I seem to keep forgetting to take them off when I park my car and leave it unattended for a while.

Regardless of the outcome of this game, we’ve learned a few things.

OSU IS A VERY GOOD TEAM, they just didn’t have their act together yet, just like the Warriors.

Penn State is damned good this year and will win the Big Ten.

The Warriors season will be be very good, plenty to look forward to. Once the offense fires on all cylinders, the rest of the team will catch on fire also, especially the defense.

  292. wafan September 25, 2008 6:08 pm

    Jason . . .

That is a nice thing to do. How did they get the addresses? From the cheques? What of those others who used cashier cheques? Hmmmmm.

  293. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:10 pm

    Jason:

    September 25th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
wafan: I think they sent them to those that made contributions. It reads:

Mahalo for your thoughtfulness in helping to support the recognition of the Rainbow Wahine Softball program’s 2007 WAC Softball Championship!

Head Coach Bob Coolen, Coach Dee Wisneski, Coach Kristi Yoshizawa

Please join us on Oct. 10th at VB math for bracelet presentation!

SWEET! Can’t wait to get home and check the mail, BUT….. I think yours was personalized???? 😆

  294. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:11 pm

    usc is in trouble.
    they need a turnover.

  295. Jason September 25, 2008 6:13 pm

IDK, but it was a really nice gesture. I looked at it, thinking, “An ad for Hawaiian bracelets?” Then I looked on the back, saw it was from the team, then looked at the picture again — sure enough, they say “2007 WAC Champions.” Hard to read, the green on gold.

Now, this is just crazy. First there’s the so-called “Riddler” character around UH/Dole St with an Uzi-like weapon; now, I got this in my e-mail inbox:

A female student contacted the Honolulu Police Department and reported that a guest lecturer sexually assaulted her when she went to meet the guest lecturer on campus for a one-on-one interview for an upcoming project. The alleged assault occurred on Tuesday, September 23, 2008.

  296. lab rat September 25, 2008 6:13 pm

    Star linebacker injured.

  297. HiFlyer September 25, 2008 6:14 pm

maybe because Jason is a student.

  298. wafan September 25, 2008 6:15 pm

It is almost as if Rogers has been greased up. Those Trojans cannot hold on to him. Not that that is a bad thing!

I wish these announcers would stop talking about how OSU is going to win tonight. Talk about bachi!

  299. Jason September 25, 2008 6:15 pm

Haha, yeah, I guess people on Lower/Makai Campus have heard of me! 😉

  300. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:17 pm

    Lab Rat,

    What star linebacker???

    Ours? Or theirs?

  301. wafan September 25, 2008 6:18 pm

    Yay Beavs!

  302. Maverick September 25, 2008 6:19 pm

    Go Greased Beavers!

  303. d1島: September 25, 2008 6:19 pm

    OMFG! SC going down

  304. lab rat September 25, 2008 6:19 pm

    Oh Oh.

  305. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:20 pm

    game over!

  306. Ronnie September 25, 2008 6:20 pm

Oh my! That was so close to a pick 6!

  307. d1島: September 25, 2008 6:20 pm

    Beaver DL wears Tennis shoes?

  308. wafan September 25, 2008 6:20 pm

    6!

  309. d1島: September 25, 2008 6:21 pm

    No answer fo’ da ‘Quiz!

  310. Maverick September 25, 2008 6:22 pm

Rodgers 14 yds short of a 200 yd. game.

  311. lab rat September 25, 2008 6:22 pm

    Turn out the lights

  312. HiFlyer September 25, 2008 6:22 pm

Jason,Wafan; just checked my mail and got the postcard too.

  313. Ronnie September 25, 2008 6:22 pm

So that’s how you rush the field… You get on the field BEFORE the end of the game.

  314. wafan September 25, 2008 6:23 pm

Okay, now the announcers may brag about how they knew the Beavers defense was going to break the Trojans.

The better watch out for the long pass and run the clock.

    Yahoo!!!

  315. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:24 pm

Not bad at all OSU… not bad at all…

    😆

Oh man… how awesome is this. I’m not as elated as USC falling to Stanford last season, but this is good enough.

  316. lab rat September 25, 2008 6:26 pm

    Oh Oh

  317. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:26 pm

    getting more interesting.
    its all on the onside.

  318. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:27 pm

    I can see it now….

UH goes to Hawaii Bowl vs Oregon State… and beats the team that beat USC.

Of course, OSU will have to take a downward spiral in the PAC 10 to finish 6th for this to happen, but hey… ANYTHING can happen in college ball.

  319. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:28 pm

Wait what??? Oh I thought it was over.

  320. Ronnie September 25, 2008 6:28 pm

    Yee Haw!!

Maybe I’ll have to call my brother tomorrow – since both of our teams lost to OSU 😉

  321. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:28 pm

    ok, now game over

  322. wafan September 25, 2008 6:28 pm

    Ronnie . . .

The stadium “security” is so anal about things I think it would be nearly impossible to get on the field that early. On the other hand, if thousands of people got over the fence at the same time, say at the 2-minute mark, there would not be enough security in the Wes’sai to do anything.

What are you or your proxy planning to do on Saturday? Will you be the leader of the field rush?

  323. FloridaTed September 25, 2008 6:29 pm

Man-o-man, I can hardly express how much better I feel, seeing what OSU is doing to USC.

But the old adage still applies, character and heart beats talent alone everytime. Nobody in college ball can show up anymore and win without a real fight.

  324. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:30 pm

    now who’s #1???
florida? georgia vs alabama winner? lsu?

  325. bighilofan2 September 25, 2008 6:31 pm

    ho boy

you put da jizz on da beaver and
he wen jus rip da trojans.

  326. wafan September 25, 2008 6:32 pm

    Yeah. Two straight!!!

I will be able to sleep better tonight — much better than last week, anyhow.

  327. chawan_cut September 25, 2008 6:33 pm

    party in corvallis tonight!

  328. Stretch September 25, 2008 6:33 pm

I like the way the Jacquizz Rodgers runs. Right when he is about to hit a defender, he always drops down to get lower leverage and drives. I noticed when UH played there and I just seen it on that last TD.

  329. Jason September 25, 2008 6:35 pm

If Georgia beats ‘Bama, it’s gotta be the Bulldogs. That’s going to be a good game.

  330. wafan September 25, 2008 6:35 pm

Time to check for cracks in my eyelids.

Did the announcer just say the Trojans went down to the Beavers?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  331. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:36 pm

Looks like the “tradition” from last season’s mayhem continues.

THURSDAY NIGHT IS WHERE #1 GOES TO DIE!!!

  332. Jason September 25, 2008 6:36 pm

Happy birthday John Fonoti! BTW, is it Foh-NOH-tee or Foh-noh-TEE? I heard the latter on the radio this morning.

  333. Ronnie September 25, 2008 6:37 pm

wafan – well… since Pauoa Boy will be with us, I think anything is possible!

  334. curveball September 25, 2008 6:37 pm

    Wow

changes things a bunch…. go OSU

  335. Jason September 25, 2008 6:38 pm

Oh yeah — the UH press releases say the former.

  336. koakane™ September 25, 2008 6:42 pm

gooooooooooooooood evening all and congrats to the beavers on their victory ova USC.

  337. Jason September 25, 2008 6:42 pm

Hehe, “Mike Cavanaugh-coached offensive line.” Gotta love Neil Everett.

  338. bighilofan2 September 25, 2008 6:46 pm

yaaaH for OSU. stand up for dare community. rush da field. day all got checked befo day got to da stadium, so whats da big deal to get on da field except to celebrate for their team. UH an da TSA at Times Supermarket, and Aloha Stadium…

whats with all this hooey, to say “security” jus for saying “security:, just a bunch of hooeeee.

i say making noise to support your team is okay to support your team. if you going get blown up on da field, you could also get blown up in the stands.

oddawize we going spend all day trying for outfigure ourselves. plus, I hate a GED guy fo tell me no can no can. i don’t understand dem telling us no can, when OSU allows dare fans to can can.

maybe Aloha Stadium Security just not big time. sure seems like some around me not tinking big time. you know what i mean?

  339. BowsForever September 25, 2008 6:50 pm

Um, did Graunke suffer a “face injury” recently?

Also, congrats to OSU. You wanna talk about turning your season around. Look out, undefeated Utah!

  340. Pauoa Boy September 25, 2008 6:53 pm

    Howzit Aunty Ronnie…

Yups I no scared bum rush the field when we strangle the Fresno Puppies…

  341. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:53 pm

Rushing the field after the Boise State game was interesting.

Of course this was the first time I ever got to do such a thing but I remember the security “letting” people through the doors on the side in the end zone and then people got impatient and starting leaping over the wall and I remember the Rainbow Dancers looking lost and worried while trying to stop the crowd themselves!

  342. Kazz September 25, 2008 6:55 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

When we beat Fresno State in their “house”, I think the best reaction is to all stand and give a “golf-clap”.

This is more so for their fans as if to say to them “all in a day’s work”…

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

  343. Pauoa Boy September 25, 2008 6:55 pm

    BowsForever,
I noticed that too about Graunke, either he getting false cracks or he not photogenic or bruddah just ugleh…

Plus wassup with Blaze Soares looking like Lou Ferrigno…

  344. Pauoa Boy September 25, 2008 6:58 pm

    Kazz,
Das a good one but I thinkin with my adrenaline pumping cause of the fatal arse whoopin Fresno going receive I no tink so I can hold back… Ho going be nawts!

  345. Pauoa Boy September 25, 2008 6:59 pm

Eh is dat Mario Cox or dat singer T-Pain?

  346. Pauoa Boy September 25, 2008 7:07 pm

Happy B-Day to bruddah Fonoti…seems like he been on the team forever…

    Happy Belated B-Day HiFlyer…

  347. Kazz September 25, 2008 7:10 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

In fact maybe I should start drafting my BS letter to the media about how I felt my life was threatened while at their stadium.

I have noticed that the best way to make false and dramatic claims appear to be legitimate is to do the following:

-State that you are a frequent visitor to the location in which you plan to publically tarnish.

-State how much you have enjoyed your previous visits to the site in which you plan to trash to the public about.

-State how you also get involved with a few malicious activities while taking the stance that you know it’s wrong and you admit you are wrong, but then point out how others are worse than you for doing it.

-State how much you supposedly enjoyed the antics of the home crowd while you actually felt insulted by it. (This helps with the sympathy from people willing to believe it.)

-Identify as many ethnic minorities as you can while pointing out the supposed ratio between them and elderly people who will play the victims in your story. (This proves to be effective in certain areas of the US mainland.)

-Make it clear that you are also concerned for the well-being of the opposing fans as this will appear to take away any kind of bias people may suspect.

Do all of this in a complaint letter and people that were NOT in attendance are bound to believe you.

  348. Kazz September 25, 2008 7:13 pm

Ok enough about Fresno, SAN JOSE STATE is the immediate target!

  349. koakane™ September 25, 2008 7:16 pm

    kazz,
    i like your passion.
i hated that BS-er fresno fan too.
what a bunch of crock he wrote up and got the national media to jump on the bandwagon.

I don’t know what made me more upset. His BS claims or the fact that the local media ate it up. I had to listen to B.C. and Jeff Portnoy give their 0.02 about the “dangers” of Aloha Stadium and they didn’t even bother to try to challenge those accusations. Lord knows “controversy” sells and garners ratings and listeners right?

However I almost flipped out when Lois Manin stood up for our people when she said that she’ll take the accusations seriously but at the same time she was the only one that had the olos to say that “during a rivalry game, there are bound to be issues and false claims to make the other fans look bad” (not word for word, but this is the summary of her statement to KITV after the accusations).

    KUDOS TO LOIS MANIN!!!

The people of Hawai’i are some of the BEST people in this country and while “people” like Cokie Roberts can go on saying that Obama vacationing in Hawaii is questionable because it “shows he’s not in tune with ‘American Values'”, we all know where this bias is coming from.

Well, if Hawaii doesn’t represent traditional American Values, then what the hell are “traditional” American values???? Obviously people like Ms. Roberts feel that family, respect, honesty, and humility are not part of “traditional” American values because quite honestly the people of Hawaii are the very definition of all of this. Hell, we set the standard!!!

    BOOOOYAH!

    (blood pressure = 180/115)

  368. BG September 25, 2008 8:55 pm

    Aloha to da Ohana!

I agree with SteveM and Fla Ted…it don’t get any better than “Nalani”. Changing to another name is like making a wet bird fly at night…duh.

Could not believe my eyes as I watched as I watched a 5’6″ (my size) midget completely flummox the USC defense. And a freshman too! Hats off (and a deep bow) to OSU and their Coach Cav led O-line. Can’t forget their defense…ferocious! Afalava was on fire!

Good to see Kekoa on board again. Must be feeling bettah! Rest up for Saturday, my bruddah!

  373. Stretch September 25, 2008 9:34 pm

    Good Evening Tsaikos!!

    Sorry – off topic
Just got home from the Aina Haina Neighborhood meeting with the new owners of the Shopping Center. Pretty interesting what the owners and some of the attendees were saying. Both sides have to “walk the talk”. Owners are committed for the long term and will spend the money to renovate. The residents want Foodland, 76 gas station, McDonalds, Jacks…. I hope that the residents support the tenants after all the renovations are done and the rents are higher.

  374. Wena September 25, 2008 9:39 pm

    Welcome Nalani!

I would go with your own name for a blog name. It’s nice.

  375. myki September 25, 2008 9:40 pm

kk, sounds like its going to be a late niter. Good thing we’re coming a bit later in the afternoon. The day won’t seem as long then.

Is it any cooler on the wesside? it’s soo hot and brilliant me decided to bake cookies tonight. What a mess, the kitchen it so hot that the cookies are taking long to cool. I have cookies all over the place.

  376. Stretch September 25, 2008 9:42 pm

myki – if the cookies are ruined, give them to me and I will take care of throwing away….

  377. Wena September 25, 2008 9:44 pm

    Hi Myki,
Oh..the preschool. We are waiting for “zoning”. They say they have 40 something cases still on their desk, and they are short staffed. Hopefully someone in “zoning” will read this and pass us already.” Little Learners Preschool”
One of my church friends says he waits like 6-8 months for zoning. I can’t believe how hard starting a business is.

  378. Wena September 25, 2008 9:46 pm

My daughter will be at the UH game….UH student cheering section. Hope it doesn’t rain!

  379. myki September 25, 2008 9:51 pm

Stretch, you have a deal. If any are left after the game you are welcome to dispose of them.

Hang in there Wena, it will be worth the wait!

  380. Kekoa September 25, 2008 9:52 pm

Stretch ~ Is there a breakfast place called “Jacks” in the Center?

  381. Stretch September 25, 2008 9:55 pm

Kekoa – it is THE Jacks that people talk about.

  382. KonaGirl September 25, 2008 10:06 pm

For those of you wondering about Tyler’s “facial injuries”…helmet + chin strap = lacerations. Welcome to the wonderful world of football. Now, you’re going to ask why don’t all players have these? QB’s helmets/chin straps have to be slightly looser than others so that they can call the plays. This makes them irritate the skin. That’s why so many quarterbacks keep the unshaven look…ie: Favre, Colt, etc.

    Just an fyi…

    Go Warriors!!

  383. Jason September 25, 2008 10:09 pm

Wena: Tell your daughter to be smart, and to help others be smart too. No cheering when UH is on offense. Yell loud constantly when UH is on defense. 🙂

  384. Kekoa September 25, 2008 10:14 pm

Congratulations to the Wahine and on to victory Warriors.

  387. SteveM September 25, 2008 10:17 pm

Just saw the Aina Haina meeting that Stretch described on the news. Recognized Aina Haina school cafeteria and remembered eating many lunches in the shopping center shops–everyone except Chucky-E-Cheese’s.

Didn’t remember Jack’s looking so large inside–did they expand in the last 10 years? First time I went to Jack’s was a breakfast pre-meeting the morning the parents and I started to network Aina Haina school in the early 90’s.

  388. momotaro September 25, 2008 10:20 pm

Ching’s Nursery can appeal to circuit court, but as WassupDoc has pointed out, because DCCA issued a ruling dismissing the appeal, UH can start construction on Ching/Cooke Field immediately.

  389. Kekoa September 25, 2008 10:22 pm

Stretch ~ Say it ain’t so!…Chuck E. Cheese is getting the boot out of the center? Wow!…that is hardcore changes by the owners. Guess they didn’t what all those criminal element kids hangin’ round and jackin’ cars from out of da center.

  390. Jason September 25, 2008 10:22 pm

And yes, it’s hot here in Salt Lake too.

  391. koakane™ September 25, 2008 10:26 pm

jason I no kea if the students yell all da time because at least they at the game, having fun and supporting the team. seen too many game where the students were getting the shaft and started to dwindle because they got no luv. I like to see the old atmosphere come back where the students in back of team and yelling their head off. this is college ball and at times we forget that its not only the fball players that make up UH but the oddah students to. they earned the right to be there and enjoy the game however dey like as long as no one get physically hurt.

  392. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER September 25, 2008 10:26 pm

Jacks on the weekend would not be a good place to have a CC. Place is too crowded and pretty small. If it is a group of 4, that would be okay but anything more is a problem.

Kekoa – hey now, I used to be one of those kids who used to hang out at Chuck E Cheese after school. They are going to move to the City Square in Kalihi.

  395. Jason September 25, 2008 10:32 pm

I have no problem with folks having fun — as long as they don’t make noise on offense. I want a large, boisterous, and intelligent student fan base. Or is that too much to ask from UH students? (Sometimes I wonder …)

  396. BowsForever September 25, 2008 10:35 pm

FloridaTed, KonaGirl — thanks, I sorta get it. Only thing is, if you compare against the Sept. 22 photo of Graunke, well, he looks like he fell face-first sometime in the past three days.

Unless the poor guy has a _nasty_ case of lozalized acne or something.

OR MAYBE…more Mack trickeration. “Coach Tomey, did you see the WB blog? Graunke’s looking pretty beat up these days!” 😛

  397. BowsForever September 25, 2008 10:36 pm

Wena ~ I’ll talk to W/doc – Tom Mui – and BHF2 at the t-gate. They’re the team you need to send to that zoning office to shake things up! It shouldn’t take so long for something so vital for a community to have.

Auwe! Any of you 3 up and lurking? Any other Tsaiko’s work in city offices that could help make a phone call to the right person? Wena put a lot of time and money into this project, let’s see what we can do to help.

Well, tomorrow is the day we begin our defense of the WAC title. Yeah!

  418. Pride. September 26, 2008 5:27 am

I’ve always thought that the best Hawaii team that I have seen in recent years was the 2006 football team. I sort of gave them a slight edge over the 1992 team. That is just my opinion.

There is however a computer ranking system that rates all of the college teams every week and then at the end of the year comes up with a final rating. Those ratings would give the edge to the 1992 team. Here is the top eleven UH teams.

    1992 – 18th
    2007 – 20th
    1981 – 23rd
    2006 – 26th
    1988/1989 – 30th
    2001 – 40th
    1984 – 41st
    1980 – 46th
    1986/2002 – 49th

My favorite is still that 2006 team though. I really enjoyed watching them play.

Hawaii was rated 60th, before last night’s game in Corvalis. With OSU beating USC, we will get a higher rating after we beat SJSU this week.

  419. Pride. September 26, 2008 5:29 am

That ’88/’89 team with “Mento” Maeva and the gang was exciting to watch. Those were fun times.

    morning gang!

good morning Pride. – 2006 team was one of my favorites too, they beat a lot of good teams that year

  421. Pride. September 26, 2008 5:41 am

Got to watch a little bit of that football game last night between USC and Oregon State. Congratulations to Joe Seumalo and Coach Cavanaugh for getting their respective lines prepared to play. At this point, both teams know their techniques, plays, coaching points, and opponent’s tendencies. At some point in time, someone has to make the decision to go out and not take crap from anyone and just hit somebody. The Beavers made that decision before the game that they would dominate the line of scrimmage. The Beaver’s expected to dominate the line of scrimmage and that is what they did. Don’t misunderstand me, that little guy carrying the ball is one hell of a ball player but, the game was decided by the big boys up front. OSU decided to play football. USC decided that they wanted to hurry up and get on the plane so that they could go back home to L.A. and watch ESPN shower them with praise like they did all last week(Long sentence).

  422. chawan_cut September 26, 2008 5:44 am

    ohio!

  423. Pride. September 26, 2008 5:44 am

    Yeah you’re right Loa.

For all the old timers, another one of my favorite teams was the 1973 team. That was the last year in Division 2 for Hawaii. The first year that Hawaii started earning a D1 rating was in 1974. Dave Holmes was the head coach in 1973, with a 9 and 2 team that beat the Washington Huskies in Seattle. I believe those were the Sonny Sixkiller days in Seattle.

Okay – I’ll admit it… I’m also looking forward to the Alabama at Georgia game tomorrow! 😀

  435. FloridaTed September 26, 2008 6:02 am

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Well, now we know that all our team needs is a few parts to work properly and we’re off and running. Off course, those parts are very important. We’ve lost to two excellent teams and yet, looking a little closer, we’ve showed glimpses of what we can be when all parts are working.

This Saturday I’m really looking forward to see that all the necessary adjustments have been made and we’ll start to roll as defending WAC champions.

Amazing how this game has taken on huge importance. The Oahu fans better show up in droves and support the Warriors, otherwise better not complain.

This is it, GO WARRIORS, show your mettle !!!

12th man is going to make a big difference this week.

We are entering the second quarter of the season. We need to build momentum to get us through these tough two quarters coming up. This week is a big must win. It needs to be similar in effort to last year’s Boise State game.

Crowd needs to be ready to rumble, and the team will respond.

Our team needs to learn how to play with intensity. OSU had intensity, and USC didin’t. Weber State played the first half with intensity, and Hawaii didn’t.

As fans, we can kokua our Warriors and give them an example of what it means to play with intensity by cheering with intensity. That is how we can make ourselves a part of the team.

That should be this week’s motto, high intensity. Play with a high level of intensity.

  442. Ronnie September 26, 2008 6:17 am

Pride. – his name is Dennis Walters. He mentioned that he played when June was a backup QB.

    Brew,

For some reason ESPN doesn’t show it on either the Warriors or SJSU’s schedules like they were earlier in the week, but it does still show up in their master schedule for the weekend. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/schedules Who knows? From what Comcast told me they don’t get programming info from ESPN until sometime Friday or even as late as Saturday morning. I know my TiVo has never picked up the programming info until Friday night at the earliest (with repeated forced calls.) Crossing my fingers.

  449. Maverick September 26, 2008 6:39 am

Happy Aloha Friday gang. Yea baby ! Manana is knocking on the screen door for a Warrior Victory.

What if Hawaii had to play OSU after they beat USC, instead of before?

Would like to hear from our coaches on a their point of view for that gameplan.

  450. expat September 26, 2008 6:43 am

I watched most of the Oregon State game last night (I was not brave enough to pre-empt Grey’s Anatomy for fear of wife reprisals). It made me feel a whole lot better about the game two weeks ago. As Pride highlighted they dominated the USC lines and pretty much ran at will. They also held McKnight to like 10 yards rushing, which makes our rushing performance not so bad, especially considering the injuries.

They also did it largely without Sammie Stroughter, who was gimpy most the game. Impressive. Good luck to the Beavs. If Florida wins the SEC and OSU finishes high in the PAC-10 it certainly can’t hurt us.

  451. brew808 September 26, 2008 6:43 am

Oh oh….Ronnie is ignoring me again…. Can you share your Fresno plans w/ me (email)? I pulled the plug on my big group drving to raisin country. Howzit expat! Kind-of nerve-racking not knowing (for sure) if the game will be carried on ESPN Gameplan or not. Last year, I had both GP, and H-Tel so it wasn’t a problem. I still don’t know of anyone successfully getting the Oceanic feed for the WeberSt game. I did successfully buy and watch the BoiseSt. v-ball game last Sat. It was a high-quality feed, and of course the results were terrific! I’ll have to keep all my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for tomorrow’s game….. 😀

Happy birthday UHfan808! Sorry I won’t be there to celebrate with you guys tonight.

Stephen: Hehe, “Hello Jim and Kekoa.” No need to correct your son, it’s nice to make blog shoutouts on the radio! Although, it’s Jamie and Kekoa … 😛

brew808: Ugh, don’t remind me about Rashaun Woods. That was one of my worst calls — I heard everyone saying, He’s not fast enough, but I stubbornly thought he had deceptive speed, and I liked him at the end of the 1st round. And … ouch. 🙁

koakane: We’re going to have to disagree here. I don’t think it’s too much to ask folks not to yell on offense. Fans have to be the 12th man — they need to help the team, not hinder. Isolated fans around the stadium yelling might not hurt too much, but when you have bunches of students with Thunderstix … IDK how it sounds to everyone else, but it’s pretty loud to me, even when I’m listening to the radio broadcast with my earphones.

I think it’s telling: You have the cheerleaders telling folks to be quiet, you have fellow students telling people to be quiet (multiple times!), and sometimes, the players signal the fans to be quiet. But they don’t pay attention.
