What a rush

The “likes” began to add up.

“A lot of people were congratulating me on Facebook,” Kealakehe High’s David Fangupo said. “I was like: ‘What’s going on?’ I didn’t know what they were congratulating me about until I went online and found out.”

What he found were numerous links, from sites across the country, to a 69-second Youtube video of his long rushes. The catch? Fangupo is a 350-pound defensive tackle who moonlights as a running back.

“All of the credit goes to Elijah Gladstone,” Fangupo said of his Kealakehe classmate. “He recorded our games. Thankfully he made that video for free for me.”

The video, which was posted a couple of days ago, attracted attention from several schools.

“I already committed to UH,” said Fangupo, who will sign a letter of intent after he takes the SAT next week. “I want to be a Warrior.”

Fangupo projects to play defensive tackle, offensive guard or, even, fullback at UH.

Video: Fangupo.

Irving is one of the good guys.

Irving is a man of faith and action and faithful action.

We know him as Bulla.

The point is name them the Warriors and Rainbow Wahine officially. That could be their legal names. But people then can call them whatever they wish. (Evidence: In my 13 seasons as the men’s volleyball beat writer, they’ve always been the Warriors. Yet the chants of “Let’s go ‘Bows” continue.)

So — wink, wink — they are the Warriors and Rainbow Wahine. But, psst, let me show you some Rainbow T-shirts I’ve got in the back . . .

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I still have an Aloha shirt with a UH Rainbow on its sleeve.

Old habits die hard – Go ‘Bows!

  12. gobows February 13, 2013 8:13 am

i prefer “WARRIORS”…but i’m always ready for a “LETS GO BOWS!” chant.

  13. Kaimiloa February 13, 2013 8:15 am

I still wear my shiny green rainbow jacket (think Les Murakami) from the 80’s. I think it was for lettering in my 2nd year. I earned but never received my senior ring but the jacket gets lots of props, especially from old-timers.

  14. A-House February 13, 2013 8:20 am

    Kaimiloa:

me too! family gave me a vintage 1980’s rainbow baseball jacket and it’s never ben worn.

now, I too fat to wear it – dang, all that all you can eat sushi in Vegas – what a life!!

  16. Stephen Tsai February 13, 2013 8:26 am

Not sure the name of the green they used to wear, but that certainly was a distinct rainbow green.

  17. Stephen Tsai February 13, 2013 8:28 am

Then again, people can chant whatever they wish.

The opposing coach will call a timeout, and after a three-minute break, nobody will remember why they were chanting.

  18. gobows February 13, 2013 8:28 am

checked the UH football media guide and the UH has not played Cal Poly…they did play Cal Poly Pomona back in the days before Div I.

  19. 808Rude February 13, 2013 8:30 am

As a long time UH and Golden State Warrior fan and season ticket holder the Let’s GO Warriors chant has always been a favorite and rolls off the tongue so nicely!

  20. AlaWai February 13, 2013 8:33 am

    top 20?

  21. Independent Thinker February 13, 2013 8:36 am

Fangupo is like Jonah Lomu, the greatest rugby player of all time. To be large, powerful, and fast is not unusual among the Tongans and Samoans. Don’t believe me. Go watch some rugby games. This is why Samoa has dominated Rugby Sevens in the past five years and continues to dominate today.

    See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsXTa7UCGlk

The US just got whooped by Samoa this past weekend in Vegas, along with Australia and South Africa.

I’ve said all along. We need to recruit the Independent State of Samoa, not just American Samoa. The Independent State has a larger population and we would get a bigger return on our buck by recruiting from there.

We already recruit Australia and New Zealand. Why stop there?

  22. AlaWai February 13, 2013 8:37 am

Hail David Fangupo! Looking forward to seeing you in Warrior Green. Good Luck with your Sat’s and the rest of your senior year. Senior memories will stay with with forever. Enjoy!

  23. gobows February 13, 2013 8:40 am

since becoming Div Ia/FBS the UH has not played Fresno St in a homecoming game.

last years 23-35 loss to New mexico snapped a 10 game winning streak in homecoming games. previous loss was to Boise St 21-28 in 2001.

  24. PolyMom February 13, 2013 8:44 am

Hope he passes the SAT. You can get your score back in 48 hours. But it cost 100 bucks for expedited scores. I know, had to pay that. I think he needs a 1740 if I am not mistaken minimum score for admission.

Sad day here in SoCal. First of Police funerals. Did they get the killer? Not sure yet. But very sad for these fallen officers. Service on all stations here.

  33. jimmy the lock February 13, 2013 9:16 am

    @graham

You can verify the numbers with UH Admissions.

Max score you can get on the SAT is 2400, 1530 does not seem so high. Isn’t that around 64% of the max? There are other requirements that must be met too (I’m sure they allow exceptions) like Algebra II and Geometry, 2.8 GPA and rank top 40 percent in your school, total of 22 high school courses of which 17 are college prep…

I never used to buy any of the Rainbow logo items when I was going to UH nor afterwards…I thought the rainbow logo was unattractive and just not something I’d wear on the mainland.

I only started buying UH logo items when they went to the Tapa H…That logo is more appealing and has universal appeal on the mainland as well.

Needless to say, I’m not going to miss the “rainbows”…It’s time for a new era of UH athletics.

Me 2 have many Rainbow logo items

But JJ change them to Warriors when identified similarities to Rainbow Coalition

I’ve heard many players and coaches were approached on the flight (wearing rainbow logo)whenever Rainbow Coalition where here for the parade.

  43. mikey February 13, 2013 9:49 am

I think the final change came when many potential recruits were doubting going to a G_ _ Team

‘Black’ Power color became UH offical color.

  56. Kapahulu February 13, 2013 10:31 am

    From Malasadas Day:

So yesterday I had to take care of my Malasadas craving after work since no one at work brought Malasadas (the company usually does).

I figured that on the way home I could stop off at Leonard’s Jr. in the Waimalu Shopping Center as I had done for a few years.

I fight the traffic and finally get there, and the store is GONE!. Actually the store is still there only Leonard’s Jr. is gone and another Business is now there.

I had to satisfy the craving for my Malasadas on Malasadas Day, so I drive to The Leonard’s Jr. truck in the Waikele Shopping Center. I don’t see a line so things are looking up. I park my car and walk over to the truck and there is a line. A very long line!

Since I had some free time, I thought I would wait it out. I counted 51 people in line in front of me. Good thing I had some free time. I was hoping they wouldn’t run out before I got to the window. After 45 minutes in line, I finally got my Hot Malasadas.

As I got to the car, I had to have one right away. Cannot wait for it to get cold.

It was so good and satisfying. So Ono!

So if anyone is planning to go to Leonard’s Jr. in the Waimalu Shopping Center……..

    forget it!

Rockne Freitas’ name is expected to go before the University of Hawaii Board of Regents next week as a candidate for the chancellor at UH-West Oahu, according to Capitol sources.

The board is scheduled to meet Feb. 21 at UH Hilo.

    Beautiful music.

    Let’s Go, Bows!

    Hahaha hiho!

  63. Buffoman February 13, 2013 11:16 am

#58 I can imagine getting in the red zone, not just goal line and letting the opponent know that we will be running the ball into the end zone with the package in the backfield. Joey as the up back with Fangupo following. And just to spread the pain and enjoyment have Fangupo lead and Joey follow.

I’d hate to be that safety being called upon to make the stop on that freight train.

  64. papajoe2 February 13, 2013 11:18 am

IOC dropped wrestling in the Olympics. That is one sport that I liked to watch. Why don’t they get rid of sports like fencing that don’t have as many viewers?

  65. Cheyah! February 13, 2013 11:23 am

Oh what a Rush! So I go on to my ESPN Scorecenter app and what do I see in the highlights section? Yup, Fangupo’s highlights, 348-pound running back breaks of long td runs. That’s awesome!

    Go Warriors!

  66. Cheyah! February 13, 2013 11:24 am

    Of=off

  67. Oingo Boingo February 13, 2013 11:41 am

Fangupo’s qualifying SAT score is determined by his overall GPA in high school. Higher his GPA the lower his needed SAT score to be an NCAA qualifier. SAT score at UH is an after thought. If he qualifies he’ll be admitted to Manoa!

  68. haka February 13, 2013 11:43 am

    Fangupo FAN!

    David IS Goliath!

    Man called HORSE!

Although he can run and would probably be a good pulling guard because of that, I think we need him as a run stopper instead. He can still come in on short yardage or goal line situations. jmo

    Warriors!

    Rainbow Wahine!

School colors are what they are, but most schools are using different colors, especially black, for marketing purposes….soooo…. 😉 😉

I tell you I can never get tired of watching those clips of Fangupo…All I can think about is when West Keliikipi stiff armed that USC player…Hmmm USC at Aloha could history repeat itself next season…..

  71. Annoddah Dave February 13, 2013 11:52 am

@#64 papa: I agree. How about those horse events…it’s more about the horse than the rider. You know the old adage: You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.

  72. jiminy cricket February 13, 2013 11:53 am

that was the greatest stiff arm ever.

  73. Annoddah Dave February 13, 2013 11:56 am

@#69 jm2375: Didn’t UH have the same problem with the Aloha Print uniforms for the mbb team back in the 70s? I think the jerseys had to be a solid color but they did wear the Aloha print shorts.

  74. Inyoface February 13, 2013 11:59 am

Fangupo looks like he could be a Sopoaga type player. Stuff the middle.

  75. Cheeee Hooo February 13, 2013 12:00 pm

So Fangupo got schollies from other schools. Any info on what schools offered him. Maybe some BCS schools? Or major programs? If big time schools offered him and he chose to stay here, Then this guy is really committed to Coach chow and the university. I’m pretty sure U got some info ST

  76. jimmy the lock February 13, 2013 12:01 pm

Don’t forget, just because a prospective D1 student achieves the NCAA qualifier status, that does not necessarily mean they meet the academic requirements for admission to that institution.

  77. Slugger February 13, 2013 12:06 pm

Hurrah for the NCAA for once. Hope the pass the contrast rule.

    Good afternoon from Masa’s!

    Hope Fangupo qualifies for admission.

  82. John Fitzgerald Byers February 13, 2013 12:12 pm

Things to consider. In a matter of weeks, ben jay has put an end to the multiple nicknames for male sports. Why was it an issue for years and no other ad attempted to fix it? Also Jamie Smith comes aboard and in one semester takes hold of the students presence at home basketball games and yet for years there are people paid a lot to supposedly produce that same result but nothing before smith arrives. What has been happening?

  83. 3-Prong February 13, 2013 12:47 pm

82 JFB: A big part of Jamie Smith’s success is the success of the basketball team. Don’t think Jaime would be as successful if the team was losing. On the other hand , for success to occur you need someone to provide the vision and the drive to allow success to happen. Jamie has been the key.

  84. Derek February 13, 2013 12:53 pm

I just like the sound when a recruit says about commiting to Hawaii, “I want to be a Warrior”. It feels very strong, like saying “I want to fight for this team and this University and the spirit of being a Warrior.” And “chase championships.” Hehe!!!! I also like the decals on the helmet. Need to find a good logo for it. I really like the decals for Ohio State.

I also like the name on the back of the jersey, a player can be proud of who he is playing for his university. There was a movie I saw recently starring Jeane Crane, can’t remember the title, but there was a scene toward the end of the movie where she said, “My life is my pride.” There are certain lines in movies that are classics. One that I liked was Richard Widmark in an old Army movie, “Hope is the mother of all things.” Of course, the greatest in my mind is JFK.

As far as the women, yeah, Rainbow Wahine sounds terrific.

  85. 3-Prong February 13, 2013 12:56 pm

Still think it is easier for the general public in Hawaii and on the mainland to remember the team names if there is a common theme (Rainbow). Then you differentiate with Warriors for men and Wahine for women.

Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine. LET’S GO BOWS!!!!!! (for all sports)

  90. PolyMom February 13, 2013 1:05 pm

SAT score is based with your grades. That is what I confirmed with my husband. When we were going through the process that was the score we had to get. Was stressful. Took test multiple times

I’m going to say it. For the last four days seeing Jim Donovan in a suit discussing the fatal shooting involving the Women’s Assistant BBall Coach I feel a little lump in my throat. Jim looks so different. It’s sad to see him talking about Fullerton. So used to seeing him in his aloha shirt. He is really looking like he’s going through a very hard time. Very sad for Jim.

  91. PolyMom February 13, 2013 1:07 pm

And did you know? There are 27 four year colleges’ nicknamed Warriors, which is #12 most. The top nickname is “Eagles” with 76. Among the top 12, 9 are either animals or birds such as Wildcats, Cougars, Bears, Hawks, Bulldogs, etc. Humans, include Warriors, Pioneers, and Knights.

  95. jimmy the lock February 13, 2013 1:15 pm

I wonder if it would have sounded better if BIG Fangupo said “i want to be a Rainbow”

Probably sounded ok when Al or Niko Noga said it.

  107. Hodad February 13, 2013 2:17 pm

Dave once said they wore all black sometimes because that was the color of the pot at the end of the rainbow. Makes sense.

  108. chowfun February 13, 2013 2:36 pm

    I like “Warrior Wahine” better..

  109. Bugaz February 13, 2013 2:37 pm

I wonder if they actually said that the want to be a rainbow, or play for the rainbows. Maybe someday they will honored by the UH and the great circle

  110. redzone February 13, 2013 2:38 pm

Thanks Ben Jay. Yesterday I asked for him to fix the problem and boom. Today all men sports are Warriors and Women are Rainbow Wahine. Effective immediately. According to the animals.

  111. PurpleMaple February 13, 2013 2:41 pm

As much as it makes sense for Fangupo to be a DT, it would be interesting to see how he would be as a RB at about 290 lbs.

  112. Annoddah Dave February 13, 2013 2:42 pm

@#110 redzone: Please ask him to fix the deficit problem! That one will be one big BOOM!

  113. Shoko February 13, 2013 2:46 pm

Aside from the uniform recommendations (Boise blue-on-blue), the NCAA also recommended game ejections for players that target above the shoulders (helmet to helmet).

Here are the other proposals which still have to be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel:

    • To add a 10-second runoff with less than a minute remaining in either half when the sole reason for the clock to stop is an injury.

    • To establish three seconds as the minimum amount of time required to be on the game clock in order to spike the ball to stop the clock. If one or two seconds remain on the clock, there is only time for the offense to run one more play.

    • To require a player that changes numbers during the game to report this to the referee, who will announce this.

    • To only allow one player number to be worn by the same team and participate at the same position (e.g., two quarterbacks on the same team are not allowed to have the same number).

    • To require teams to have either their jersey or pants contrast in color to the playing field.

    • To allow the use of electronic communication by the on-field officiating crew after successful experimentation by the Southeastern Conference. This is not a required piece of equipment but will allow officiating crews to use this tool.

    • To allow the Big 12 Conference to experiment with using an eighth official on the field in conference games. This official would be placed in the backfield opposite the referee.

    • To allow instant replay to adjust the clock at the end of each quarter. Previously this provision was only in place for the end of each half.

  114. Manoa Mist February 13, 2013 2:47 pm

Guess I’m just the old guy but I always loved the Rainbow logo. Loved the Rainbow stripe. Rainbows not man enough for you? Try tell Levi Stanley, Cliff Laboy or Al or Niko Noga that playing for the “Rainbows” was not manly enough. They put you to sleep real quick.

But times change or else we’d still be the Fighting Deans I suppose.

And yes, well said. Bulla is one of the great ones.

  115. Shoko February 13, 2013 2:50 pm

Since the academic topic was brought up and I was on the NCAA website, I thought I would include the sliding-base scale for eligibility.

  118. Kevin February 13, 2013 3:04 pm

You don’t have to be “old” in age to love the old Rainbow logos.

Retro stuff sells well with the college kids of today and I always felt the U-H logo w/Rainbow logo is one of the most iconic images we’ve had in this state.

I prefer Warriors for the men ONLY, but at the same time, I do not depreciate what “Rainbow Warriors” meant to the school and to us as a populous.

  119. Annoddah Dave February 13, 2013 3:15 pm

    Good! Men-Warriors Women-Rainbow Wahine

Let’s all get over it. Enough grumbling already!

It’s crazy that there are people still holding grudges for YEARS over changing the name, increasing parking fees, changing tailgating times, seat premiums fees, changing colors, VIP seating, lack of parking, traffic, almost anything you can think of.

I hear this one guy periodically on the radio who because his seats got premium seat fees added has quit going to the games. PATHETIC!

    Support the team!

BTW, It will be fun to see what Moore does!

  132. redzone February 13, 2013 4:28 pm

Just wondering. What do we call our co-ed sailing team?

  133. J February 13, 2013 4:41 pm

Going to make it a point to only attend Rainbow Wahine games. If I want to watch Warriors play, I’ll find a high school game.

It’s not a grudge. It still smacks of when one coach, one man had an issue with a name and made the change for the team he had been selected to to lead. I’d auction off gear, but I was careful to not put money down on anything that just had “Warrior$” printed on it.

One person isn’t bigger than an institution. But here it seems to be proven otherwise. When UH gets a new AD or another head coach on a mission, will he or she have the right to force another name change?

  134. Derek February 13, 2013 4:45 pm

Not too long ago the m-volleyball team was also called the men of war. Who or why, I don’t know.

Everyday feels like Valentines Day for me. I wish you all love and happiness now and forever.

    Have a great WARRIOR day!!!!

Congrats to former Wahine Lisa Mann on her promotion to HPD captain.

  139. oldtimer808 February 13, 2013 6:43 pm

#133 You sound like a little kid that if you don’t do it my way than I going take my ball home…well change happens for whatever reason and I’m sure the old timers from way back when also had issues when the nickname changed from the Fighting Deans to the Rainbows in 1923. I’m an old timer from the Rainbow days but I’m glad Mr. Gay made the decision on the nickname so that our athletic teams have continuity. The Warrior nickname is not exclusive to Kamehameha School so the nickname is actually a good nickname to identify who we are as a State and the Hawaiian history. Anyway go take your ball and go home.

  140. PurpleMaple February 13, 2013 7:22 pm

Kris, some folks, including myself, are on fixed retirement income. The additional costs keep some away from the games. Keep in mind, costs for everything else such as electricity, water and food are rising rapidly. So it is generally more affordable to go with PPV for the family. I still attend with the family, but limit the number of games to perhaps three games at most.

  141. laulau head February 13, 2013 7:37 pm

No matter for me…We win games, call us whatever you want…

    … items of interest …

UNLV: Bobby Hauck has now officially named his brother Tim defensive coordinator.

Weber State: We have learned that former Montana head coach Robin Pflugrad has accepted the offensive coordinator job at Weber State. We also hear that corners coach Eric Lewis is adding the defensive coordinator title.

  143. Kanole February 13, 2013 8:56 pm

Ben Jay on Leahey and Leahey. Very impressive interview and he explains the nickname change. He talks a good talk and he got me believing.

  144. J February 13, 2013 9:03 pm

    oldtimer808,

Wrong analogy as I don’t have the only ball at the playground. In your scenario, if I take my ball, which as I’m gathering you deem to be dollars (well more like pennies in my case), home, everyone else will keep on playing (and paying) without noticing any blips in the lineup.

Had I that power, the school’s nickname wouldn’t be so gender exclusive as it is now (there’s no unifying name that all fall under). Keeping Rainbows and using Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine would have been the solution. Without the men using Rainbows, do the women need to be specific about wahine? After all, we wouldn’t want to confuse people in thinking that if there are Rainbow Wahine, then there must be male counterparts. So then why the need to be specific?

What I’m choosing to do regarding the men, is simple. Not going to chase all over California to make a game or to adjust travel on trips home to squeeze in a game or two. I’ll save that effort (and fuel) for the Rainbow Wahine.

  145. Inyoface February 13, 2013 9:09 pm

Man, can’t believe how much size and depth Of one full year of recruiting Norm Chown has brought. Unreal.

I remember talking to guys on my football team years ago and they said they would play for UH cuz the jerseys were clean along with the silver helmets. Btw I’m a warrior fan here in Texas. Used to live on the islands but now stay in the lone star state. What u guys think???

  147. Just1fan February 13, 2013 9:22 pm

    Big So’le in Fagupo.

Though I’m not surprise by his long runs. Ke’au, Waiakea, and Hilo? Bottom tear teams in the BIF…..man they look kinda small with no effort. Watched him run against Farrington in the states. He did have a 2 yard TD and was 7 for 28 yards. Don’t think he’ll be getting that far at the next level unless he trims weight. I must admit he sure can move for a big so’le. Looking forward to seeing him on board and yes he could be a big blocked down the pipe. First things first, pass that SAT, loose weight and get quicker. Sheehoo!

  151. kris February 13, 2013 9:29 pm

140-purple maple, sorry if you thought my comment was targeted at you. It wasn’t. Someday I’m sure I may have some of your same problems getting there. I’m not as young as I used to be too. Do what you can do to support. If you do PPV, great!

I just find it ironic about how some will grumble over things. Change comes….. so easy yea to say when it doesn’t effect you!

I went to UH during the Rainbow days. But frankly I prefer Warriors. Had Mr. Jay decided on Rainbows or Rainbow Warriors should I have a vendetta and cancel my season tickets and completely boycott the games? No, I would never be so petty. I will proudly say I went to and graduated from UH. I would support MY school whatever the nickname is. Tinkerbells, Gorillas, Cockroaches whatever the decide to nickname the teams.

Sometimes, things will not go your way. Pissed off? sure, its only natural. But at some point in time we all have to move on.

A few years ago I was laid off by this very newspaper. I was NEVER told I was not going to be rehired. I was NEVER thanked for my decades of faithful service. They tried to fool with my severance and I suspect they will try to fool with my pension when I am eligible to collect it. Was I P.O ed? Of course! But I figure the best thing all that hate, spite and bitterness would give me is an ulcer, high blood pressure and/or a stroke.

After all that, it’s time to move on. I got other things to occupy my time, new job, gorgeous GF. Life it not perfect, but I’m hoping things get better.

  152. Just1fan February 13, 2013 9:32 pm

The NCAA Requirements for College Athletes:

The NCAA Eligibility Center verifies the academic and amateur status of all student-athletes who wish to compete in Division I or II athletics.

College-bound student-athletes who want to practice, compete and receive athletically related financial aid during their first year at a Division I or II school need to meet the following requirements:

    Graduate from high school.

Complete a minimum of 16 core courses for Division I or 14 core courses for Division II. After August 1, 2013, student-athletes who wish to compete at Division II institutions must complete 16 core courses.

Earn a minimum required grade-point average in core courses.

Earn a qualifying test score on either the ACT or SAT.

Request final amateurism certification from the NCAA Eligibility Center.

For Division I student-athletes who will enroll in August 2016 and later, the requirements to compete in the first year will change. In addition to the above standards, prospects must:

Earn at least a 2.3 grade-point average in core courses.

Meet an increased sliding-scale standard (for example, an SAT score of 1,000 requires a 2.5 high school core course GPA)

Successfully complete 10 of the 16 total required core courses before the start of their senior year in high school. Seven of the 10 courses must be successfully completed in English, math and science.

Prospects that earn at least a 2.0 GPA but not a 2.3 GPA and meet the current sliding scale standard (for example, an SAT score of 1,000 requires a 2.025 high school core course GPA) will be eligible for practice in the first term and athletically related financial aid the entire year, but not competition. Freshmen who are academically successful in the first term will earn the ability to continue to practice for the remainder of the year.

Division III college and universities set their own admission standards. The NCAA does not set initial eligibility requirements in Division III.
