Weekend promotion

No official announcement until tomorrow, but all signs point to cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips, linebacker Kamalani Alo and safety Mike Sellers earning starting jobs this weekend.

Also, it appears David Graves is now the No. 2 quarterback.

There are rewards for perseverance.

* * * * *

As expected (a long time ago), Sean Carney is the new assistant coach for the volleyball Warriors. He has great knowledge of the sport, as well as an easy manner that helps him relate to players. Even as a player, Carney had a self-appointed leadership role. He made it a point to help newcomers get acclimated to Hawaii.

Sean Carney was like a marathon runner in his last season. If I remember correctly, he had to compensate a lot for those around him in his final years and was flying all over the court digging balls left and right.

    Good for him!

I just want to see a good, injury-free game. One that we can enjoy watching these Warriors blow out the carbon and get that motor running at peak power!

    Quick story…

My Mom and Dad lived with us up in Michigan for a couple of years, as my Mom managed one of our stores. One day, after church and hunting around for gar(b)age sales, my Dad was driving home (speeding). He was pulled over and presented his Hawaii driver’s license. The cop asked why he was in such a hurry, and his response was, “Just got done working on my son’s car, and was opening it up to clear out the carburetor”. Cop laughed, gave him a warning, and sent him on his way. Lucky he had that Hawaii license, and gave such a “Motor City” response.

    Wafan…

Talking about parents who do too much for their kids, I saw a post on facebook a couple of months ago… something to the effect of:

“If you do everything for your kids now, they’ll grow up lazy and hopeless.”

I just had to laugh, as certain relatives here are going through those exact circumstances at the moment.

And while venting a little, I almost posted the following, but then decided not to, just in case:

“Some folks here, (as well as somebody’s boyfriend) think they’re smarter than everyone else… but I’m not impressed.”

They wasted $80+tax on a wireless router (that none of us needed) this past weekend, and now they can’t return it or get credit for it… and after all that, our setup is exactly the way it was before they came over! Hahaha! Smart? Bwahahaha!!!

    Wow

    A reminder that it’s just a game.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o will play one of the Irish’s biggest games this season with a heavy heart Saturday.

Te’o’s girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died Wednesday from leukemia. A day earlier his grandmother died, family friends said.

    Condolences to all.

  40. Kevin September 14, 2012 9:34 am

Wouldn’t be surprised if Te’o ends up having a monster-type of game.

Athletes are unique. Professional or collegiate, they are unique individuals. It seems that whenever an athlete experiences a personal tragedy, their performance on the field or court or whatever seems to be nothing short of amazing and we are in awe of what they are able to do despite whatever may be going on in their lives.

The “sanctuary” found on the field of competition in any sport can be a good place for the athlete to be in. It is a place where all the emotions good and bad can manifest itself in amazing physical displays of dominance. Sometimes the athlete can appear to be playing “unconsciously” while overpowering their opponents.

I witnessed an athlete go thru the same thing last year and the performance was stellar and robotic… DOMINANT.

Think of how Miah Ostrowski performed against nationally-ranked Utah State the same week his father passed a few years ago. While in a losing effort, the kid took the Rainbow Warriors on his shoulders and across his back that beared his father’s name and legacy.

I remember the systematic and dominant way Kaia Parnaby shut down Marist at home on the same day her grandmother passed.

Both moments were chicken skin moments that I will never forget.

And I am sure there are many more instances as well with other athletes right here at UH that are similar.

Athletes have something in them most of us don’t.

  41. LizKauai September 14, 2012 9:36 am

Love all the good news and Carney’s return.

Heavenly Consolation to the Te’o Ohana.

    Happy Aloha Friday to all!

  42. Derek September 14, 2012 9:42 am

Bottom line, you gotta earn your stripes by performing in actual games. Apparently, Sellers, Phillips, and Alo did well against USC which is a real eye opener. They did it the old fashioned way, they “earned” it!!!!! Congratulations to them and for the other Warriors, keep working hard and make plays and practicing to perfect your techniques and skills.

  49. SteveM September 14, 2012 10:14 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST — nice story on Larry Price. As I recall, Price was also a PhD. in Education and certainly one of the most colorful coaches in UH history. The “Hula-T”, defense as the “Attack Unit”, beat BYU with 5 field goals–all flash in memory. I didn’t know Norm Chow was also at that BYU game in old Honolulu Stadium and they were family friends.

  50. (Jesse) James September 14, 2012 10:14 am

Glad to hear about the tribute to Larry Price – one terrific guy.

My wife knew Larry and his brother Roy at Lincoln School. Roy was also a scholar-athlete at UH and later head of Civilian Defense in Hawaii. Both brothers were outstanding athletes – Larry being the bigger of the two while Roy was lean.

  55. A-joe September 14, 2012 11:38 am

Most coaches would stick to what they now best. Even if it means to force a square peg into a circular hole.

Chow is showing his versatility and ability to utilize the talent he has before him. Even if it means to veer from his bread and butter Pro Set base.

    He no sked!

    Mean!

  56. A-House September 14, 2012 11:38 am

Tom Price, the youngest of the Price brothers was in our dorm back in the early 60s.

Believe he was the starting center for UH when they went to Tennessee and lost 56 – 0. During that same trip, bus drivers kept telling Samson Rodrigues to move to the back of the bus. He kept responding that he was Hawaiian to no avail.

  57. Kevin September 14, 2012 11:49 am

  62. Bowwar September 14, 2012 12:32 pm

The promotions kinda point out the defensive weaknesses revealed in the USC game. Our down linemen did okay, but our safeties really were out of position most of the game.

  65. madeinhawaii September 14, 2012 12:37 pm

  67. madeinhawaii September 14, 2012 12:47 pm

Right now, Lamar and Nevada must be looking at their passing games, though. USC couldn’t get a 100 yards rushing against Hawaii. It will be a good tweaking for our safeties and corners.

  68. Bowwar September 14, 2012 12:48 pm

#72: I have to admit that NOBODY in the college scene has two receivers like the USC pair…Those two could play on any NFL team right now. It doesn’t negate the fact, if our safties were in better position, the “gains” might have been lower versus “Big plays.”

Actually, I didn’t have a problem with our corner play, as you have to be “aggressive” and it all depends on the referees whether they call interference or not. There was equal amount of contact originated by the receivers, so I thought they could have called offensive interference at times.

  69. Bowwar September 14, 2012 12:49 pm

My sympathies go out to Te’o and his girlfriend’s family…It must have been tough being on the mainland and NOT being there with his girlfriend.

  70. jimmy the lock September 14, 2012 12:49 pm

no forget albatross -3, condor -4, duck mo bettah peking style.

  71. Bowwar September 14, 2012 12:52 pm

I think eventually Graves will play if Schroeder continues to get “nailed” due to weaknesses in the offensive line. Graves is a better runner at this point and Schroeder the better passer. We’ll have to see how it all unfolds.

  72. Pupule Portagee September 14, 2012 1:14 pm

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o had a terrible week of tragedy and loss.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Te’o’s grandmother passed away on Tuesday night. The next day Te’o’s girlfriend, identified by the Detroit Free Press as Lennay Kekua, lost a battle with leukemia.

    Auwe…

Hang in there Bruddah. Be strong.

    No such luck.

He’s kind of a witty guy.

  75. tommui September 14, 2012 1:32 pm

I don’t think Coach Chow is going to run up the score deliberately. If he has a good lead (but not substantial) and the defense is doing well, he probably would “blood” the second/third and whatever string just to get them prepared for later use.

No sense taking chances with your starters and you got to get the others ready for the opponents down the road.

  76. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 1:46 pm

Hope coach Chow can have his “cupcake” and eat it, too…

Meant to say that UW’s gag order on reporters “has come under a lot of criticism by many there…..” UW has invested a lot of $$ in their facilities and coaching salaries, with the result being 7-6 seasons.

  112. SteveM September 14, 2012 3:54 pm

Darn…just noticed that OKTOBERFEST at the Hale Koa will be on Sep 26-29 this year. Last year’s Tsai-ko outing (instigated by Curt) was fun and interesting. I’m going to miss it by one day this year. 🙁

  113. manoa#1 September 14, 2012 3:57 pm

#119 ok we see dis weekend.

  114. jm2375 September 14, 2012 4:00 pm

cinco – don’t feed da trolls.

  115. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:05 pm

Cougars have yet to score in the second half this season. Will the curse continue?

  116. Old School Dave September 14, 2012 4:05 pm

Mike Leach’s “Air Raid” is starting to click, albeit, against UNLV.

  117. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 4:08 pm

20-20 tie at halftime. UNLV was at the one foot line at half…

  118. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:11 pm

20-20 tie at halftime? I must be watching a different game. 😉

  119. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 4:13 pm

Well…I am watching “scrambled” signals, wivy, wavy, lines on channel 22

on basic tv, which does not include it in the package. So maybe I misread

    the wavy score?

  120. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:17 pm

    Let me help you…38-20 WSU.

If no mo ESPN, you can always watch on FirstRow website.

  121. HiFlyer September 14, 2012 4:18 pm

    28-20

  122. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 4:18 pm

Shoko, sorry, but I’m definitely not middle class…

  123. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:18 pm

    Ooops, correction….28-20 WSU.

  124. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:20 pm

    http://www.thefirstrow.eu/sport/american-football.html

  125. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:22 pm

First Row was one of the sites that was shut down last year by the DOJ. They had their domain name seized. So they renamed their website and now are back up again. For now, until the government shuts them, again.

  126. wafan September 14, 2012 4:24 pm

Looks like Wazzu might be trying to coug it . . . again.

  127. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 4:25 pm

Thanks Shoko. I guess Justin tv is out, too, as I couldn’t get it there either.

Kudos to HiFlyer, too. Your score makes it not so bad.

  128. Shoko September 14, 2012 4:26 pm

One thing good about First Row is that they also stream games that are on the PAC-12 Network.

  129. Bryson September 14, 2012 4:43 pm

Re:118 I don’t normally agree but when it’s on film it’s on film…also the play where the fumble was forced he was also out of position if it wasn’t for Kamalani Alo giving chase that would have stayed a huge Trojan gain…

  130. cincodemayonnaisse September 14, 2012 5:43 pm

    #123

    Yup…we sure will 😉

  131. AlaWai September 14, 2012 5:48 pm

Very impressed with UNLV. Never gave up and now within one TD. We will have a dog fight when they visit us here.

  132. RedZone September 14, 2012 5:58 pm

I hope to see better referees tomorrow.

  133. Ipu Man September 14, 2012 6:38 pm

All these people are excited about tomorrow’s UH game:

  134. Ralph September 14, 2012 7:08 pm

A House you may want to reconsider your statement that you are collecting WBB tickets that came with the FB season tickets to give to Coach Beeman for recruiting, you may have already violated an NCAA rule regarding benefits to recruits from a booster. You are a UH booster once you’ve joined any of the athletic program booster clubs, like Na Koa or AKA, Na Wahine softball.

Athletes have strict rules and guidelines what they can receive from a coach during the recruiting process, and also what they can receive as scholarship athletes once they enrolled at UH.

  135. A-House September 14, 2012 7:26 pm

    al:

one and the same! he was tough and rugged!

  136. A-House September 14, 2012 7:30 pm

    Ralph:

Coach would invite the entire team and coaches and maybe some parents – not targeted to a single player.

    appreciate your input

  137. gmahoney September 14, 2012 7:39 pm

Started the football weekend by watching “Remember the Titans”. All pales in importance when I hear that a childhood friend is diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. May God bless you, Ellie.

  138. jm2375 September 14, 2012 7:57 pm

Yea! My 20+ year old Walkman radio still works. Only thing I have with AM radio. Gonna need it more this year than last since no mo names on da jerseys.

  139. Dory September 14, 2012 8:13 pm

SteveM and I are cruising back from Vancouver

to Honolulu on Sept. 30/12 and would like to

get together with the Tsai-kos on Oct. 2,

Tuesday at 7 pm. We will request Art or

Gaye to reserve an area for our “Dutch

Treat Get Together” at Genji. Please let

us know that if you will be joining us.

Dessert to be served after dinner.

    Will see you all soon

    Cheers,

    Dory

Can you guys stop with the “if it’s on film, it’s on film” stuff?

These coaches watch more practice and game film in one day than anyone does for a month. No one knows who did their job better than the HC and coordinator…

I saw a lot of guys out of position against USC….maybe we should replace the whole starting lineup?….lol

  142. bowlute September 14, 2012 10:51 pm

I went to the St. Louis vs. Punahou game tonight and was pleasantly surprised to see UH coaches Kaumeyer, Uperesa, Jones and Tuioti on the sideline at the game. There was tons of talent on the field, hopefully they can keep some of them home.

  143. st. anthony trojan September 14, 2012 10:52 pm

I remember Price when he was playing with the 35th Cacti at Schofield Barracks in the mid 50’s, with many other locals there that time. Skippy Gomard, Gimo Souza, Julian Monte, Doug McQuillian and many more. That Carpenter dude from West Point (lonesome end)….excellent football those times….nice to see Larry getting honored..wish I could read the whole article… here in Manila now,

and this BLOG is the only good part of the paper…

  144. mo808 September 15, 2012 1:40 am

  145. wafan September 15, 2012 2:20 am

    Good Game Day Saturday!

    Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  146. wafan September 15, 2012 3:33 am

    Enjoy the TG today.

And, definitely, everyone eat a little bit for me, too! Especially the pan lau lau. Mmmmmmm.

  147. Kekoa September 15, 2012 3:46 am

Wafan ~ I checked my list, and I don’t have you scheduled for the Pan L/L. However, I do have an extra serving of my dee-licious Lomi Salmon & poi for you. I’m spreading some at the bottom of this post, and you just scratch n’ sniff…

    here_______!

  148. wafan September 15, 2012 3:53 am

    Kekoa . . .

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

No, but seriously . . . now I am ono for lomi salmon. But where am I going to get the poi. Darn it.

At the local Mexican restaurant they provide chips and salsas. One of those is a really good salt-salmon-less lomi salmon. I just keep forgetting to take my own salt salmon in there. Not sure, though, how the Mexicans would take it.

  149. (deportes) September 15, 2012 3:59 am

I take pleasure in, cause I found just what I was having a look for. You have ended my 4 day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye

  150. Kekoa September 15, 2012 4:02 am

Aloha mainland Tsaiko ‘ohana! We will be thinking of ALL of you today. We know how much you would rather be here enjoying this perfect Hawaiian football afternoon with us. So let’s raise a toast to each other and cheer for our Warriors to be successful in their home opener!

  151. Shoko September 15, 2012 4:13 am

Pretty sure that Uwajimaya’s sells poi. I think I even saw poi being sold at a Korean Market in Tacoma. Can’t remember which one tho.

  152. Kekoa September 15, 2012 4:15 am

Wafan ~ I had some kalua turkey from a batch I made yesterday. Diana insisted I leave it home because there wasn’t enuff for more than 2 servings, (her and Pops). So I put this huge 5 quart pot back on the steamer, and just took a drumstick to chew on. Homeland security.

  153. Jack Flash September 15, 2012 4:29 am

Gameday! I’ll be there. Will you?

    Go Warriors!!!

I hope they have a drum and bugle group leading the Warrior Walk with lots of LOUD fanfare!

Congrats to David Graves…..for presevering….and bouncing back….as a good teammate…..from a very tough 1st week of the season.

  168. baby tutu September 15, 2012 6:33 am

Nearly all of what you say is supprisingly legitimate and that makes me wonder the reason why I hadn’t looked at this with this light before. This particular article truly did turn the light on for me as far as this specific subject goes.

  169. helencalif September 15, 2012 6:46 am

We hope David Graves gets some playing time today and next Saturday. His parents decided to take a vacation week from their jobs as an anniversary gift for themselves … to see David and two games. They left this morning for Hawaii to see the Lamar game today, spend next week, and then go to next Saturday’s game, too.

  170. koakane September 15, 2012 6:49 am
