Day 10

In today’s morning practice:

• The four No. 1 receivers practiced together for the first time. Darius Bright (turf toe), Billy Ray Stutzmann (hamstring) and Miah Ostrowski (hamstring) participated in the non-contact passing drills. They hope to extend their workouts tomorrow. “Small steps,” Ostrowski said.

• Right guard David Lefotu does not have any serious damage in his his sore left. He’ll resume practicing this week.

• Mike Sellers worked out as the No. 1 quarter (nickelback). He dropped three interceptions, resulting in having to do 30 on-field pushups, but he was credited with three pass breakups.

• Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon attended practice. Dixon and his family are here until tomorrow morning.

• • • • •

Big week for the Warriors, who will break training camp at midweek.

They will practice at Aloha Stadium tomorrow for the first time, testing out the new artificial surface. A full-contact scrimmage is scheduled for Thursday, after which the depth chart should be solidified. Look for the No. 1 receivers to all practice together sometime this week.

Off to practice. I’ll have a report after that.

  4. Pomai August 15, 2011 7:52 am

Where and what time will be the full-contact scrimmage?

  5. Stephen Tsai August 15, 2011 7:53 am

Scrimmage will be at UH. Preference is for it to be on the grass field, but without the video platform, it’s difficult to get good shots. Hopefully, the temp platform will be in place soon. If it’s at Ching, fans can at least sit in the stands. No red-ant problem there.

Speaking of the turf, I spoke with someone who spoke with the contractor who installed the turf and he said he was told that the turf is definitely not as fast as the previous turf, but is much more forgiving on the players.

  12. Kevin August 15, 2011 8:04 am

Proper caption of photo should read:

  13. Stephen Tsai August 15, 2011 8:04 am

    Haka:

Thanks for the update on the turf.

That last turf was fast, because the blades were all plowed down. And because the crown was either lowered or removed, the surface was relatively flat, so whatever was on that field couldn’t be power-cleaned off. The past couple of seasons the players were suffering nasty-looking abrasions.

  14. CoolEthan August 15, 2011 8:05 am

Need to start photoshopping the buff pics with avengence. Might Mo and teammates bigger than the buff?

Jon Wilner’s AP ballot has UH in the top 25!

Texas Tech’s President says that the Pac-12 won’t take schools from Texas until UT-Austin is one of them.

“Here’s the deal, what the Pac-12 offered last year, and I think they would be open to this year, is a package deal,” Bailey told the radio show. “You’d have to have four schools and Texas is the cornerstone to that. Remember, the issue last year came down to the Longhorn Network. The University of Texas wanted its own network for tertiary rights and the Pac-12 doesn’t allow that. We can cut that out right there. I don’t foresee that happening.”

  23. Garret August 15, 2011 8:16 am

Texas Tech’s President also says that the Big 12 is going on the offensive now…which sounds like they will be adding schools soon after Texas A&M leaves. He’s already publicly admitting that Texas A&M will be going to the SEC.

“In the past we’ve sort of been reactive, I think the nine remaining members of the Big 12 have decided that the reactive behavior – it’s time to get rid of that. It’s time to be proactive and I think you’ll see a very proactive approach… I think you ought to think of conference realignment with the Big 12 being one of the cornerstones.”

    Ron Rivera on Kealoha…

    WHO STOOD OUT:

WR KEALOHA PILARES: The rookie from Hawaii showed good playmaking ability after the catch on a 35-yard scoring play and did well on special teams. He’s still raw, but a great talent who has a build similar to Smith.

Rivera said Pilares did a great job. “The young man shows his run after catch and that was probably the thing that intrigued us the most,” Rivera said. “Kealoha did an excellent job catching the ball, turning up field and getting what he could and then breaking it. I was really excited about that. I watched him on special teams and thought his energy was outstanding.”

    wafan,

  43. Garret August 15, 2011 8:47 am

    Garret,

I am getting the feeling that the MWC’s chances of receiving a provisional BCS membership are going down the drain. Are you sharing a similar belief?

    Old Diver,

With TCU’s numbers counting for the MWC in this period, I think that the MWC still has a good shot. It is okay if the Big 12 takes BYU, that doesn’t affect things. If the MWC takes Air Force, that would be a problem but the MWC could still get AQ status for 2 years (but the numbers would seem to indicate that it would be lost after that).

So, I don’t think that the provisional AQ status is in dire straits for the MWC. As long as they are looking at BYU or Houston or other non-MWC schools, the MWC would still get AQ status for 2012 and 2013. If Air Force leaves, then the appeal would be kind of interesting…TCU and Air Force would be counted with the MWC’s numbers but not be there after the appeal.

A lot may depend on how the MWC does this year. If TCU wins the MWC title this year and then leaves, the appeal may not go well. If the MWC doesn’t win at least 70% of their nonconference games, the appeal probably won’t go well. UH, Fresno State, and Nevada need to do their part also to show that the MWC is replacing BYU, Utah, TCU (and possibly Air Force) with other strong schools.

So, cheer against TCU and cheer for all the current and future MWC teams. And hope that the Big 12 leaves the MWC alone.

  51. haka August 15, 2011 9:10 am

The Buffaloes being deemed 6.5 “underbuffs” is concerning. The bison will be plenty motivated, will be big, will play big and TALK BIG. The Warriors must stay disciplined and not get into it with the herd. Execute…one snap and clear.

Interesting tidbits from this Texas Tech beat writer.

One Big 12 school leader was told by FOX execs that UH would not be team invited to join initially and that BYU would be first team

Interesting that #TexasTech president Bailey mentions FOX and the other media partners when discussing the future of the Big 12.

As @drewjay told us earlier today, BYU not a lock to join Big 12 if asked. Issues would he not playing on Sunday’s and exit fee to WCC.

There is a place that I went to in Washington that you could buy old bread for real cheap ($.25?) and drive through a buffalo filled park and feed them, like in the picture. There are also yaks and other animals. Yes, the buffalo are huge. Is it buffalo or bison? What is the difference. Or is it same, same? Those of you who are going to the UH-Washington game should go to that park. The buffalo’s head barely fits into the car’s window but the tongue is large and will reach out to take bread. Slobbered all over the window and car. Too many screams though (funny). I highly recommend going there.

Why would UH Manoa “fast-track” his admission? Because its the “right thing” to do or just to focus on Blakes because he’s a student-athlete, a basektball player?

Bypassing their usual policies and procedures of admission or whatever one wants to call it for a student-athlete only really borders on a potential NCAA violation.

Now, if UH Manoa improves the pace of their overall admission procedures, then no worries.

  80. al August 15, 2011 10:43 am

this would save the class for gibber if he does get in this fall.

this will still be a great class with brereton, stokes, jefferson, and blakes.

the losses of this year’s recruits, stevens, biggs, and mitchell actually allows the gibber to recruit and sign at least three next year.

big is good for next year.

a big appears to be all but inked and could be in classes this fall while he sits out the mandatory transfer year. biggs could be one of them after a stint at a prep academy next year. this would be a great thing for him to shore up the acadelmics and gain a few pounds.

the key to bigg’s arrival next year will be getting blakes in class this year, even if he blakes grayshirts this year.

Kev, athletes have special consideration to get them in classes that doesn’t affect their practice time. Morning practices = afternoon classes and so on and also classes in their field. Yes, this might sound privileged but how can all the student athletes represent their school throughout the United States if they have to stand in line to try to get their classes. No openings in their class makes them ineligible.

good to hear that bright, stuzz and miah will be healthy enuff to take reps sometime this week. that doesnt necesarily mean they are back and at full-throtle. turf toe and hammies are debilitating ailments and not easily shaken. time and therapy applies.

their ailments have already reduced their reps. the fact that mac is exercising caution and not pushing for these three to practice speaks volumes for his depth chart. not to mention his confidence in his senior QB, bryant moniz. whoever emerges as starters for the left wide out and the two slot positions for the colorado opener, they must be able to go 100%. as former warrior dc, jerry glanville liked to quip, “i’ll take the backup who can go 100 over the starter, who gives less”.

at this point no one knows the degree of injury involved with the three. but, judging from their absence on the practice field–mac is being wisely cautious.

thursday’s scrim should provide some clue whether our offense is in operational mode. we dont need to look spectacular–but we should move the sticks with consistency. we are inside the 3-week marker to gametime and a prolific O such as ours must show signs of life at this point, especially with an experienced QB like Mo.

nothing wrong with hand delivering paper work through the U of H workflow process to get the recommended approvals for registering and attending class this fall.

many do it. many entities do it, legislature, courts, banks, city permits.

cannot help if the time it took to verify and qualify his test scores comes close to the U of H registration dates and deadlines timeframe. something must’ve been said that if he qualifies he will be enrolled. it’s not like class has started.

his intent was and is to attend the U of H. not some last second wannabe transfer student.

We may have taken a depth hit from the recruiting losses, but I think that the way Stokes & Brereton are playing we definitely got two quality contributors. Also, it will be great to see both Brereton & Wiseman on the court at the same time as they are the kind of blue collar players that can make an average team GREAT!

  97. Curt August 15, 2011 11:31 am

Wow. Stokes is a scoring machine…and only a freshman too.

  98. Curt August 15, 2011 11:33 am

Now we have to get Blakes in.

    It’s called selective dating.

Pick and choose battles wisely. No need set one’s self up for rejection if it’s avoidable on your end. 😆 😆 😆

  106. kev-1 August 15, 2011 11:54 am

Anyone got any news on the UFL draft to disperse the Colonials players to other teams? I think that was supposed to be today. Hope Colt still gets his shot . . . somewhere.

  107. Garret August 15, 2011 12:00 pm

The SEC going to 16 teams would be bad for UH, as the chain reaction could result in multiple teams being lost from the MWC.

But the process for the Aggies to join the SEC continued on Monday as the nine-member Texas A&M System Board of Regents met in College Station and voted to give A&M president R. Bowen Loftin the authority to handle any and all matters relating to “conference alignment.”

A&M sources close to the situation tell Orangebloods.com the Aggies expect to be announced as members of the SEC within the next three weeks.

Those same sources said the SEC has indicated that the league will expand by four schools to 16.

“It’s not just an expansion planned to add one or two schools. The plan is to expand to 16 schools,” one source locked into the A&M situation said Monday afternoon.

    “Those plans have not changed.”

The Perryman Group estimates that State fiscal revenue would be reduced by $28.2 million per year if Texas A&M leaves the Big 12, but the Conference survives. Losses to local governments would be $13.1 million per year.

Oklahoma Sooners apparently do the Haka too. Well at least at practice. Its on ESPNU right now.

They have a couple of Samoan players on the team that appeared to be leading/teaching them.

  111. d1shima August 15, 2011 12:19 pm

    iwwthm,

Saw that. Nila Kasitati is a Freshman from Trinity HS in Euliss, TX who was leading the Haka “class”

  112. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 15, 2011 12:21 pm

Here I thought our Hawaiian sun and heat was tough…The Sooners practice at night (7pm) when its around 105 degrees!!!

btw, interesting to note a couple of things:

    1) Click on any player on OU roster and his page has a link to highlight video. Nice touch.

    2) Kasitati was a huge TE in HS who is now on the OU roster as a OL. He showed awesome mobility as a Receiver. Noted that Wisconsin’s roster also includes several converted TE’s amongst their massive OL contingent.

    It would explain the solicitation.

    A-House,

Should be an entertaining spring. Intangibles are defined as “unmeasurable qualities”, but I like the potential of such possibilites unfolding.

I can be more specific when I see you in person come tailgate time or in fact I will email you what I think.

No record predictions, but I have legit reason to be very optimistic.

I asked Coach Dee 2 years ago at the Manoa makeover what it was like for the 2009 team and her response was, “one cannot believe or comprehend the team chemistry – first time in her life she came across a team like that – so very special”.

#143 Ahouse was that Henry brother’s place on east side 😉

  145. Kevin August 15, 2011 1:21 pm

    A-House,

People get so caught up in what they can see and measure that they forget what other “forces” are at play whenever a full team sport is involved.

Not having the right chemestry doesn’t mean people are at odds with each other although some think that is the case because it’s the easiest scenario to understand and assume.

All I’ll say for now is that it will be a new season.

  146. Kevin August 15, 2011 1:22 pm

Do my Eyez deceive me?…WreakinEyez is on da blog?! Eh! where you wuz??

  151. Kevin August 15, 2011 1:29 pm

    Couch,

It fits in with Wahine volleyball. Choke talent last season, but we missed the tittas if you know what I mean.

There are similar things happening to volleyball this season as far as what is returning on top of what is coming in that makes for a lot of promise. Same with softball.

But I’ll use that word (softball) sparsely since it attracts the WRONG kind of people looking to make noise out of spite.

  152. Da Punchbowl Kid August 15, 2011 1:34 pm

    Good news for Lefotu indeed.

Saw him on the ground and really in pain, but once on the cart he looked to be ok and wasn’t showing any tremendous physical discomfort.

  178. Da Punchbowl Kid August 15, 2011 2:24 pm

    Yep –

That IS good for Lefotu. Excited to see those receivers taking reps too. Will have to go watch practice when the first offense and defense is ready to roll. The team as a whole looked pretty good last week.

  186. Da Punchbowl Kid August 15, 2011 2:31 pm

    NCAA investigating Miami football.

  213. Kevin August 15, 2011 3:34 pm

Normally I’d laugh when these BCS level school get investigated, but now it’s just pathetic.

I mean we all had inklings, but man…

  214. cheepono August 15, 2011 3:40 pm

Even though woodard isn’t in pads, its good to see him encouraging his fellow teammates and absorbing all the instruction by the coaches.

  215. cheepono August 15, 2011 3:44 pm

Vaughn meatoga is built like a mack truck. He’s definitely one of the more physically imposing d-linemen. Also looks like pj put on some good weight too.

Didn’t see Satele play in tonight’s football game…

  227. Derek August 15, 2011 6:07 pm

Haka, let me ask you this. If it was Mana Silva, do you think he would have made those potential interceptions? I rest my case. You have to make da play. It’s the difference between maybe winning a game or lose it. Granted it was at practice, but the coaches are evaluating everybody and who is going to make it on the depth chart. It is very important.

A good example is the UNLV game in 2009 in Vegas. It was a tight game and the Rebels won 28-27 as time expired. One play that stuck in my mind (I was at that game) was when the UNLV QB threw over the middle and Spencer Smith was in great position to make an interception, right in his hands, and he dropped it. UNLV got another repreive and they took advantage of it and drove down the field and scored a touchdown. I don’t want to harp on Sellers. He’s a grayshirt freshman. My point solely was that when you are in position to make a play, make the play for your team, that’s all. Hopefully, he and others will learn as they go to have perfect practices. When the lights go on, you have to perform. That’s the bottom line.

  228. madeinhawaii August 15, 2011 6:12 pm

More reason for Jugg machines eh?

  231. Kevin August 15, 2011 6:38 pm

Ah…. The unforgettable UNLV game. People blame the last minute TD for losing that game, or that Spencer Smith dropped potential pick.

NO ONE talks about all the over thrown balls through out the game.

The whole game was off and we could have won easily.

It’s ok though, sports fans (me too) generally BLAME the latest thing they saw as the key component of a loss. There are games where that IS the case, but NOT the 2009 UNLV game. Too many missed OFFENSIVE opportunites in the first few quarters if you ask me. More often than not, most games are not lost because of one or two plays.

It’s like blaming the last traffic light before your office for being too long for being late to work, when you kept hitting the snooze button at home.

  232. jm2375 August 15, 2011 6:39 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Been lurking all day. Too busy to play.

DPK – #155 – You almost made me spit out my coffee all over my keyboard.

Off-topic – watching a show on the Japan tsunami. Amazing footage. Please remember that those affected are still in need.

  233. Kevin August 15, 2011 6:40 pm

Likewise, that Boise State kicker was targeted by some unruly BSU fans who SHOULD have been storming Coach Pete’s office.

Why blame the kicker for missing those FGs when BSU played like a team that had money on Nevada.

BSU could have EASILY won that game by three TDs at the LEAST.

    Just throwing that out there.

  234. Bowwar August 15, 2011 7:32 pm

ST – What ever happened to the two QBs that UH was recruiting??? Are they still on the radar screen?

  235. jm2375 August 15, 2011 8:04 pm

OK, trying to help BG find a fb profile pic. Went searching thru the Tsaiko pics on SteveM’s site. Buggah is almost as elusive as brew808.

    Derek,

Let me ask you this, “Seriously?”. So you really think I am saying dropping the ball is not important? That I endorse dropping the ball. Aiyah, das y hard. The problem with blogging, like an email or other electronic correspondence is it can be read in many ways and that can cause a misinterpretation in its intent. My apologies for making a “case” about it and an obvious failed attempt at humor as I did not think for a second that you would take it as a personal insult to your most serious post.

  246. Kevin August 15, 2011 9:33 pm

    Haka,

    No need.

  247. jm2375 August 15, 2011 9:42 pm

SteveM – #246 – which why I said, *almost* as elusive as brew808.

  248. haka August 15, 2011 9:52 pm

    Kevin,

It’s ok. Sometimes we shoot from the hip and forget to factor in the wind as was the case in my post. I admire Derek’s passion. I know he just wants to show his support. I just never thought it would be taken as such. It’s really no beeg ting, but I know one ting, nobody wanted to catch those balls more than Mike Sellers. Anyway, it’s all G! I hope…

    Go Warriors!

    Go Sellers!

RE: Transfer 6-8 Christian Standhardinger of Germany (needs to sit out “x” number of games): Gary Dickman saw him play for Nebraska — “…he was their best player and one of the Best in the Big 12 … he should be good for the WAC and a real good addition for Hawai’i…”

i too would like to know what happened to the 2 top secret QB’s we heard about.

did they decide to go elsewhere?

it seemed as though Hawaii was in the middle of QB hysteria with Forcier and some other potential recruits and transfers..then all of a sudden it went all quiet…wth?!

If the deadline to apply/accept at UH is already done, I am guessing the transfer QB (1 out of the 2) ain’t coming here.

  255. Curt August 15, 2011 11:28 pm

    iwwthm

We’ve all been asking about the mystery QBs. You might be right about the transfer. There’s not much time left to get into school. So, you would think it would be announced by now unless he didn’t commit to us. Dangeroo. C’mon ST; pls spill da beans soon.

  256. al August 15, 2011 11:50 pm

    okay…let’s explain.

that transfer dude could be coming in january.

that hs holy grail candidate could be a 2012 recruit.

or i could have it all topsy turvy.

  257. al August 15, 2011 11:54 pm

“eagle forgot to mention that standhardinger’s mother is part filipino.

okay, we could have fun with this guy’s surname, but, i won’t go there.

but we could give a nickname…christian “stud” standhardinger.

  258. Stephen Tsai August 15, 2011 11:58 pm

Nothing has changed on the QBs. But unlike last time, I’m not going to say anything until it’s a done deal.

  259. al August 16, 2011 12:06 am

    fair enough.

  260. al August 16, 2011 12:08 am

    August 18th, 2011 at 8:04 pm

    A-Joe,

I have walked the walk in my support of the UH program, as you know. I have spent literally *hundreds* of hours trying to get things done that will help the Warrior program. I have worked with 4 different groups of people on these efforts because I never told anyone no that approached me with something that benefited UH. Some of those people are on this blog, some lurk, and lots may never have read this blog but want to do things to help UH and its Athletic Department. I have never received a penny for these efforts and I have never had my expenses reimbursed, and nobody I have worked with has taken anything either because the point was to help UH and not to make money for anybody.

Yesterday I found out that an effort that has been going on for over a year that would have brought much-needed funds to things that the Warrior program needed is going to be neutered by the Administration. You would think that it would be simple to support donations to benefit the Warrior program…that is nice in theory but the hoops and roadblocks are simply frustrating.

I am very close to just giving up on these types of efforts and just giving money to Na Koa and saving the time and frustration of trying to do any more than that. I’ll just give the rest of my budgeted donation money to support Academic scholarships and selected charities.

If there was any frustration you detected in any of my posts yesterday, I earned the right to that frustration.
