Webster leaving KITV

One of sports journalism’s good guys β€” Jahmai Webster β€” is leaving KITV to join a Denver station.

Webster started at KITV in 2010 as a weekend sports anchor and reporter.

The calendar says it’s Labor Day, but it’s no holiday for the Warrior players and coaches. The coaches were in the office at 4 this morning, analyzing video cutups and finalizing the game plan for Saturday’s game against Oregon State. The players had a weight-lifting session in the morning. There will be meetings today and a conditioning session this afternoon.

* * * * *

The Warriors roster is at 104 players with wideout Adonis Phillips rejoining. Phillips, who was a scout quarterback last year, was not on the training camp roster. He moved to receiver in the spring.

The Warriors resume practicing tomorrow morning.

Keep doin’ like you do, Warriors. The train is a comin’.

  8. Warrior Will September 1, 2014 9:19 am

This is it. No more moral victories. The time has come, Warriors will win this week. UH 24-OSU – 17. The key to the game is putting pressure on Mannion. UH will move the ball and be able to score against OSU defense. However if Mannion has time… look out he will shred UH D.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

This is getting ridiculous. You gotta re-enter your name and e-mail addy every time you post. I have to go back out to the Warrior World front page and then go to the WB front page just to see the new post. AND today, it was over half an hour between the time ST posted that the new post was up and I could see it (and I was hitting “Refresh” every 5 minutes).

maddog50 – Welcome home! Come over to the t-gate pre- and post-game for the 5Fs.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

kudos to Mr Noh, Murphry and others who are backing the “We go get um” donor fund – hope it’s a huge success!!!

if people will donate every year, don’t have to plenty, but every year and increase the number of donors, UHAD will be blessed – no thanks to B Jay!!!

wonder how successful he has been, individually, in bringing in the $$$ and how much? just, don’t be like Herman F – NADA!!!!!!!!!!! yet his plus to the selection committee was Olympic connections leading to large donations – what a loser!!!!!!!

    Good morning everyone!

ST — I agree with jm2375’s comment #10. The site is obviously setting a name/email/URL cookie, but the cookie is too short-lived or a mechanism I don’t know. The name/email will stay for 5-10 minutes, but inactivity beyond that requires re-entry. Resetting cookie life span shouldn’t be too difficult.

Also there is no navigation to previous posts. The August daily blog entries I did not archive are lost to me.

A-House, you think Ben Jay cares who raises the funds for him? LOL!

He’ll BANK on the work of others getting him some nice bonuses:

    http://www.hawaiireporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Signed-Letter-of-Acceptance.pdf

    $15,000.00 for a balanced budget.

    The most SICKENING of all:

$15,000.00 for good APR standings. A nice bonus for the hard work off the backs of the student-athletes who put the work and time in the classrooms, not to mention the tutors and some of the coaches in ALL of the UH sports programs that help to council and monitor the academic progresses of their student-athletes.

    SO…. who’s supporting who here?

  23. Old School Dave September 1, 2014 10:15 am

UH – 38, OSU – 28. Sean Mannion is a quality Pac-12 QB and very dangerous. Should be a good game, nonetheless.

  24. cocobean September 1, 2014 10:15 am

I have a different take on BJ. The general view of him is he stuck his foot in his mouth. But in my view one of the consequences was a brighter light was shined on UHAD’s financial plight. At first people were up in arms over, again his taken out of context remark. But as cooler heads prevailed BJ’s real message was clear – UHAD and the students under their charge need more financial support.

People have stepped up. Big time, loyal fans as Ray Noh, Murph andKurt O have redoubled their fund raising efforts. A lot of the wait and see fans got off their butts and bought game tickets rather than waiting. I think the buzz created is something UHAD can try to build on to hammer home their message – our student/athletes need and deserve YOUR support. Donate to the fund raiser or show up at a game or call your legislator……..

  25. cocobean September 1, 2014 10:25 am

Kevin. I know you have close dealings with the UHAD and have better insights to it’s inner working. But to be fair, I don’t think you can use the contract UH offered to Jay can be used to say what motivates him. Is his contract out of line with other MWC ADs?

  26. Old School Dave September 1, 2014 10:26 am

Agree, that the key is to get to Mannion. If he has time, then it’ll be a long day/night. Media people at OSU say that offensive line play under Mike Cavanaugh has been disappointing/underachieving the last few seasons.

  27. UHfan808 September 1, 2014 10:31 am

    Happy Labor Day!

Great job with the Coach Chow show last nite, Tsaimeister …and of course Robert Kekaula and Coach Chow, too!!

  28. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2014 10:46 am

As I understand it, Jay doesn’t have a contract. He signed one of those terms of agreement that are like contracts, but not really. I’m not sure I understand it.

  34. st. anthony trojan September 1, 2014 10:57 am

me have no trouble posting…get google browser… n check auto fill…presto every time post..it is right there…

KEVIN…right on…don’t forget…no give players their rent money.. sleep in locker room…n no mo place to feed you… along with other fiasco…..plus for me…trying to cut from each program is not a fair solution…the non revenue sports budget should not be trimmed at all…while me do agree…sum times cutting must be done…but have to find ways to get more revenue at stadium…

COCO…MAYBE YOU ARE RIGHT… but not for me…we have to look at what expense n hurt he put on the athletic dept…he made mistake.. n tried to correct…n it turns out good as you say…but sum of the damage maybe will never be known…plus his creditability…suffered me thinks even more…

TACT: is the ability of telling a person to go to hell…nicely….n they will enjoy doing it…or something like that..’sir winston’

COCO….. maybe…just maybe….if he took the time to go to Mr. Murphy… n explain to him n Mr. Noh…n give them a ‘fired up sales pitch’ of the plight of the finances up there at UHAD…that he would get the same results…or maybe even better ???

For me …he does not have the TACT nor the sales ability to ‘hustle donors…he is just a little ‘pinto bean’ counter…HE SPENDS HIS TIME…according to one poster on here ..tweeting…n instagram…when he should be out ‘beating the bushes’ looking for ‘kala’….don’t fool ur self… we can support a first class div I team… the money is there…this state will back the right person…in that position…remember…the wonder blunder happened on his watch…n besides the initial cost…millions in legal fees…

ST… NE SERIOUS INJURIOUS … no news in good news ?
ne one help me please…how many total sacks we gave up ?

TIP OF THE COCONUT PAPALE TO …offense n defensive coaches…seems like both did a excellent job…n to that Beemer dude…next time me back home will buy you sum books for ur book case… maybe BJ…. WILL PAY 4 IT WITH HIS $$$BONUS$$$….what u think kevin ???

  35. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2014 10:58 am

  37. UHfan808 September 1, 2014 11:09 am

    33 sat:

    Well it goes without saying…

If Ben Jay asks the community to Warrior Fan up monies for season tickets

And we no listen …to him

    Then das our fan fault

    Not his (fault)

Riiiiiight?! (Technically, he should have to say *it* just once!)

Um hello?! We Warrior Fans have as much to do with contributing to the fund (yes, we are: bc we like to watch and cheer and for some, even moan and complain) than the big time donors you think he should be soliciting…

Buy your season tickets (minus first game cuz that’s all pau lau lau) and buy um now so as to avoid making hu-hu for yourself and everyone else (parking, ticket booth, enuff fuud left at the consession stand, enuff workers called in to work at the consession stand).

You see how this is all a team effort? We are more that just coaches, players, and admin. We fans are one huge concerted effort difference

Be a fan, one good Warrior Fan πŸ˜€

Good Luck Jahmai! Live Aloha in Denver!

The key to beating Oregon State is stopping Mannion…If they can put pressure on Mannion and lock down his receivers we have a chance. Of course, special teams will always set the tone It’s too bad we didn’t block any punts agains UW, as we came awfully close a few times. I really think despite the first return that St. James was very hesitant in moving up the wedge. I think we need to get someone else back there who is going to run up the gut.

I truly understand where Kevin is coming from. But IMHO if we the fans stop doing what we do who are we really hurting, the UHAD and his boys, the coaches and their staff, upper campus and the useless, no we are actually hurting the student-athlete’s.

Believe me it is hard, very hard to do what we have done, but I guess some of my stubbornness comes into play, I won’t let them beat me!!!!!!!!!

  51. Andrew September 1, 2014 12:22 pm

It’s pretty insulting reading the UW blog pages and seeing that nearly all their fans think Eastern Washington is a tougher test than UH even after we nearly beat them.

  52. UHfan808 September 1, 2014 12:25 pm

    39 sat:

Come on be realistic (and fair)

Does anyone really need to motivate true fans?!

Are you being a true, loyal, ragingly true and loyal fan..

..if you yourself continues to be So. Hard. Head?!?

    Aiyah! πŸ™

If one guy has to be hired just to convince you to take care of your own house, kids, Warrior team, what does that say about you as one devoted, loyal, and rabid fan?!

Really seriously, just how devoted, loyal, and or rabid are Y-O-U/W-E?

Even more Seriously. Sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do because it’s the right thing.

Remember your parents and coaches and teachers saying something to the effect: “Just do what I asked and later you will see. Please.”

Do the right thing you want Ben Jay to do and do your part as one loyal fan.

    Why?

So that Ben Jay can concentrate on more important things *other than* worrying and wondering whether he really needs to do what you want him to do.

(Eh, btw. you sure we on the same team? You like focus to be on us Warriors Fans’ ego needs or would you rather admin focus on our Warrior Football and sports needs and challenges, etc. so that our UH Teams can spend necessary time excelling and doing their best?)

In my opinion, Ben Jay having to spend time worrying and repeatedly trying to motivate us dedicated and supposedly-decidedly loyal fans, is really a waste of time when he really needs to focus on getting us back past Sugar Bowl level.

It’s almost never too late to try something different.

    Do your part:

Be the terrific, loving, positively encouraging Warrior Fan (or any team fan for any other team sport for that matter, even your own household) that supports its team for the good of the team because it understands the meaning of being part of a T-E-A-M.

Like what tom 41 and Pomai 49 say above: TEAM EFFORT involves US WARRRIOR FANS, too!

Cheehuuuuu!! GO WARRIORS!! GO WARRIOR FANS!!

Do the right fan thing and no be so hard-head!

  53. st. anthony trojan September 1, 2014 12:26 pm

    Agree 100% POMAI…..

However we have to go a step further n take sum steps…to prevent tone of the founders of koa anuenue n mr. kobayashi…from throwing up their hands IN DISGUST..n taking a hike… because that is exactly what is happening.. they are telling them to go take a hike…if you don’t like leave… n for me…part of AD JOB is to bring them back in the fold with ‘TACT’ n get them on board..surely their are differences of opinion..n personalities.. but should be a happy medium….

WHILE THAT MAY NOT BE THE VIEW…IT SURE AS HELL BEING IMPLIED…

I know this is a football blog and I am not a football fan but I wanted to chime in with my opinion re what Kevin, Pomai, etc, are posting.

I, too, can understand where Kevin is coming from. I’ve felt the way Kevin feels and sometimes my anger still comes through. However, deep in my heart exists my love for my Basebows which is far greater than my hate for BJ & Co. As long as I am able to, I will continue to support my ‘Bows.

However, I will not support ‘We Get ‘Em!’ because I don’t know how BJ will spend the money…is it all going to football, or to pay some administrative costs, etc.

Another reason is because ‘We Get ‘Em!’ is another third party entity. I would rather make donations to booster clubs. More of my money goes to supporting the programs directly.

  58. A-House September 1, 2014 12:54 pm

to say or not to say – that is not the question

question is how much have you contributed to UHAD in 2014? to say that we need to support is easy; to actually give is another.

    61. I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.

I’m a baseball season ticket holder and in the past 3 years have made donations directly to the Grand Slam Club, Na Wahine Softball Booster Club, and…Na Koa!

Before that my donation only went to the Grand Slam Club.

  63. st. anthony trojan September 1, 2014 1:11 pm

    uh fan 808..
realist…there is not enough ‘rabid loyal’ fans to fill seats…lest..some has to be motivated to do so..
there are not enough members on a team to be ‘motivated’ is why coaches get motovational speakers before game…

so having said that..BJ is not the motovational person in that position..he is NEGATIVE..

AS 4 ME PERSONALY.. MAYBE ME CANM DO MORE HERE IN Manila.. n do have sum plans…but when living in Kona…jumping on q plane..renting car..paying hotel n attending game..seems to me..i am, motivated… but maybe i am not being ‘fair’ in ur eyes…sorry 4 that..

DON’T forget…’PO DO GEES ‘PAKIKI HEAD’

    me thinks..if you have a ‘motivational’ fans… n give them a motovationsal speech.. they become ‘rabid’ maybe…just a guess…

β€œOf course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.” ZIG ZIGLER…maybe that can help you n BJ understand more about motivation…please if you have a time… go n read some of him.. not trying to be a smart a…..just so maybe u will see ‘motavation’ is used by very many in our daily lives…

maybe… BJ… WILL send me part of his ‘bonus.. so me canm gat plane fare…plus hotel n car.. n maybe ‘free’ game ticket…sit next to you.. n u will see how much of a rabid fan me can come…

At one time me had 2 sons play that sport.. n was a commissioner for football…for pop warner… ‘small potatoes’ but every team always started the year in ‘blue ink’ if the parents were motivated… n it was my ‘DUTY’ to get them motivated …n to be fair…i think i did..

but lets not fight 2 much here…the facts speak for themselves…n ‘attitudes/ need to be changed up there…n like you say…all should be..rabid fans.. n don’t pick on
    poor… BJ… let him do his work…

hope though..that if you see sum one.. be they mom or dad…take a road of the beaten path…that they should be at least be told to ..take a step ‘back’ n see if the path is correct…they are many moms n dads in prison…that maybe not told their children…to steal n other things..or knew n did not correct…..

we are all due correcting n criticism.. me included… sorry me ruffle ur feathers about BJ.. MY VIEWS will not change..until he change his…LIKE ST SAID… he is very articulate…maybe he is motivating you in the wrong direction ??

THEY ARE CRITICS OF BJ…COACHES…ME…N COUNTLESS OTHERS… GLAD WE HAVE THIS TO LET OFF STEAM…thanks advertiser…

    just saying…PEACE

    IMUA RAINBOW WARRIORS

It takes no special talent, intelligence, P.R. skills or whatever to cry that you don’t have enough money. I get the reluctance to donate given the leadership, it’s like giving to Women’s Basketball because you didn’t want to hurt the girls but at the same time you’re enabling Jim Bolla to keep his job. Let’s see what Mr. BJ can do.

    IMHO

    RE 68:

    Yeah..okay…

I seriously know we get fans that can figure this stuff out. It’s not exactly rocket science but it does take a lot of self-realization, internal review, and good old team work.

    ——
Your words are not inline with your actions.

    So I have to ask:

How many years were you a commissioner?

    Do you really have kids?

    That played sports?

I hate to say it. Your words read pretty darned negative to me.

If you’ve been a commissioner yourself especially *with* two kids that played sports, I’d have expected you to be a bit more motivational if not more, to meet your own expectations of your own expectations of Ben Jay.

Really this is not about Ben Jay. As a commissioner or boss or owner, you would quite seriously know this.

Now it’s quite enlightening and funny but sad funny how you won’t use your own motivational prowess, that I think you must have had to use for this commissioner position you once did, especially in this much larger, more serious situation.

Be the former commissioner you once were.

Or if you were never one commissioner, or father for that matter, at least act to the level of the position(s) you imagine and aspire to be.

Letting off steam is the equivalent of mindless complaining, that is, unless it is to be helpful and thought-provoking – to work things out – and with the goal to be completely productive.

I get it that you rabidly care – Be a productive member of this Warrior Fan team!

    64 ebs:

    I don’t understand what you don’t understand.

    Seriously.

    Ben Jay has been asking.

    All this time, in fact.

    But were you listening.

Or did we only listen after the media started screaming it for him?

We just have to start Thinking *Big Picture* to be a Big Picture.

    —–

Okay for a minute let’s turn this around.

Say we had no Ben Jay.

No one to tell our community that we must contribute.

Then in the end, no one contributes.

Because no one is there to give this message – no matter how it’s given.

    Then what?

    Who would we blame then?

Someone who didn’t hire someone motivational?

We can blame others for not being motivational as why we didn’t want to do but at the end of the day, what we do and aren’t willing to do is a complete and total reflection upon us *all*

Right now, our needs are greater than any motivational speech or speaker.

Howzit, Gang! Happy and safe Labor Day!
Not gonna get into the deep discussion of who to donate to, and why, when, etc.

I have a question concerning vendors at Aloha Stadium. Is the Stadium Authority bound to hiring only one entity to handle all food and drink stalls?

Can’t they just post a list of how many food and drink stalls are available, along with location, and have those up for bid by any and everyone? Maybe have a limit of 4 or 6 SAME stores? I think competition between vendors may be healthier for us fans in the long run, instead of leading to a monopoly with price-gouging. Think of what the airport, or even food courts look like…

3Point1Four I would like to thank you for any donation to the softball booster club. That being said, during my time sitting at the table at the RWSS I have had many many people say that they do not want to donate to UHAD or AKA, they would rather donate to the individual booster clubs because they then know where their donation is going. I happen to agree with them. I am sorry that I can’t say more but truth be told if the individual booster clubs disappear then you will see an even more decline in donation.

  75. gobows September 1, 2014 2:19 pm

ben jay should go collect beer bottles in the parking lot at the stadium on game days…earn some money, get some exercise, and do the state/environment a favor all at the same time. plus he might get to eat some good grindz.

    73 sat:

There just has to be the understanding that ppl can’t just come on to this blog or any other to promote their own self interest just because they’re all hu hu and just because no one can see them.

Yes venting is allowed but it needs to be productive otherwise it is just relegated to be simply useless complaining.

Who wants to hear complaining all the time?

And about the same thing over and over…

Yes, I’m complaining but I’m also trying to reason with you because there are others on this blog that you might actually be inadvertently brainwashing to your way of complaining or might be hurting someone’s feelings which then snowballs into something larger.

That and I really care about what happens to this team and program.

Use your God-given commissioner sense to help us out of this potentially dire, in the long-run situation.

I have to say. We have really great coaches. With all the animosity going on here and there in the community (and even here), the coaches have somehow been able to protect and motivate the kids so that they work extra hard and keep playing throughout the entire game.

Kudos to the coaches, parents, admin, and friends and family for the support of our players. Obviously to me, you’re doing a terrific job.

Good to learn bc the band plays this before, in the middle, and after games; for every TD; and partially for every 1st down.
