Warriors make the grade
The UH football earned a 962 APR averages for a four-year period through the 2012-2013 academic year, the highest score in the program’s history.
In comparison, the multi-year average is 951 for NCAA football teams, 956 for FBS teams, and 958 for Mountain West teams.
The period covers the academic years 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-20012, and 2012-2013.

At the end of each regular season, the Rainbow Warriors recognize their top football player with the Alec Waterhouse MVP award.
Waterhouse, who died in 1999, still has an impact on the football program. He donated $303,000 to equip what is now the Alec Waterhouse Training Center.
And each year, Waterhouse Inc. donates $200,000 to Na Koa to cover the summer-session expenses for football players. The summer sessions have accelerated the credit-accumulating schedule for players, results that will be apparent with Saturday’s commencement ceremony.
Of the three former Warriors who will participate in NFL mini-camps this weekend, outside linebacker Tavita Woodard earned a degree this past December, and defensive back Charles Clay and inside linebacker Brenden Daley will complete work on their degrees this week.
Fifteen years later, Waterhouse is still the Warriors’ MVP.

Higgins started ahead of Mariotta at Saint Louis.
One can only hope for more people like Waterhouse. His impact will be felt by many generations of Warriors.

One thing you have to give JJ credit for, although he made changes in the football program, he embraced and respected people who made major contributions to the program. He made sure Mr Waterhouse and Mr. Ben Yee were always given props for their contributions.

With the 2014 NFL draft history, football guru’s are looking ahead to next years crop of QB’s. Pretty interesting that two of the top prospects for the 2015 NFL draft are Hawaii home grown products. Every body knows about Mariotta at Oregon. Sleeper who’s gaining a large interest is Andrew Manley at Eastern Illinois. He’s listed with Bryce Petty (Baylor), Brett Hundley (UCLA), Sean Mannion (OSU), Bo Wallace (MSU), and Mariotta, as sure fire NFL picks. Eastern Illinois is the home of Tony Romo and Jimmy Garropolo.
Geez, wonder if UH could’ve used Mariotta or Manley in the upcoming season? Wonder where coach Mac is these days? He’d still be coaching if he recruited the right athletes.
8 coach mac tried recruiting Manley, but Manley was looking for bigtime offers and tried playing the waiting game! Now I believe coach Chow didn’t except Manley as a walk on or transfer from NMSU
Actually, UH was recruiting four quarterbacks for 2010, including Manley. The scholarship would go to the one who accepted first. Kevin Spain, at the recommendation of Dennis Erickson, accepted first. Spain was a nice guy and good competitor, but he joined UH with a pre-existing injury.
Chow was willing to accept Manley as a walk-on with the chance to earn a scholarship. Manley decided to accept the Eastern Illinois offer. Manley is a good guy. I’m glad he has a chance to do good things.

Mariotta was 1 year starter. Who’s name got big time from going to a Oregon camp who he soon committed at after receiving an offer. Can’t fault coach mac for not offering a kid on potential. They should have after the season he was having, but he had already committed to oregon and I’m sure he knew he couldn’t beat an oregon offer
I actually think Manley has some very Romo-esque qualitites about him.

10. That’s a double screw up…
1. You don’t offer 4 guys giving a scholarship to the 1st fish that bites… You prioritize based on who could help you the most… And you def don’t just offer a kid because someone recommends u to him.. If he was so good, Erickson would have kept it to himself in case a scholarship opened up for him. Lets not forget Hawaii had better QBs in the past than ASU did prior to Mack being HC. Recruiting is an art. You don’t shut the door on good football players because someone committed to u in the summer time.
2. Manley would be our starting QB this year. “No question” about it as NC likes to say. I’ve already seen his name on a few draft boards for 2015 draft. If you look at the options Hawaii has, it would be a no brainer to offer a spot to him. Especially in win now mode.
In the Graham basket*. Haha although with the love Chow was showing Graham he might have wanted to put his eggs in graham. Haha

Manley would have had to sit out a year if he transferred to UH last year (unless he was granted the exemption because of a family illness). UH already had Schroeder, Graham, Woolsey, Higgins, etc., for 2013. I don’t think it was wrong to assume that Graham would be a good quarterback. The one thing I’ve learned in football is you never know. I didn’t think Rolo was going to be successful after his first season. I don’t rule out anybody. But, like I’ve said, Manley’s a good guy and a good player. We all wish him well.

My conclusion is, Quarterback is the most important position in any team sport. You touch the ball on basically every offensive play. You’re not going to be a winning team until you find one. Just look at the Seattle Seahawks. Insert Russell Wilson and you have a super bowl team. Year before, 7-9 team. Andrew Luck elevated the worst team in football and made 2 consecutive play offs.
You should never be satisfied or get comfortable with your QB situation. Sign 3 guys a class if you have to in order to get 1 good one. The beauty about those dual threat QBs now days is some of them are athletic enough to move to DB or WR or RB…
Our current roster has 1 signed QB recruit in the NC era. Beau Reilly. Should have signed 2 minimum maybe 3 to ensure we find a good one. I don’t count transfers or walk ons. Transfers need to contact the HC first, therefore not recruited like high school or JC transfers.

Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson got one, but not immediately. I think he had to wait until something like the fourth game. Taylor Graham petitioned for one in 2012, but was denied.
Think everyone, or mostly, everyone realized that Graham ‘might’ be injury prone. However, his injury came from scrambling up the middle against Nevada. If he sat in the pocket, it looked like he could take hits.
26. It sounded like the request was legitimate, and didn’t think that NCAA wouldn’t approve it. But, yea, they are inconsistent when it comes to such things.

27. Graham being injury prone is the least of my worry. His inaccuracy (46%) in year 4 of his college career indicates he’s not a D1 caliber QB. Has a D1 arm and size, but that doesn’t mean much if you can’t hit a moving target. Bring in competition…. As of right now, were going into year 3 with a walk on QB and a 37% passer with 0-3 TD-INT ratio battling for #1 spot….. Lets be honest… There is nothing optimistic about that…

Yep, true, based on Grahams stats his accuracy was very bad especially the USC and Oregon State games. However, I thought the Nevada game he was coming around until he got hurt. After that, given his sporadic use the rest of the season, his non-throwing shoulder might have been bothering him. Was hoping if Graham stayed healthy last season his passing accuracy would have improved. It is what it is, though.

Texas had no one drafted. Hasn’t happened in……well, it hasn’t happened to my knowledge. Louisville had three first-round picks and a third-round pick. Maybe that’s why the former Louisville coach is now at Texas.
While I agree with Jeezy that the QB position is your single most important player, I am not quite on the same page with him regarding the Russell Wilson allegory. Let me explain, while the Seahawks have had wild success the last couple of years, it is not centered, from a strategic perspective, around the QB position.
Pete’s drafting and team philosophy is based on the notion of obtaining the 53 or so, best athletes you can in the draft, almost regardless of position, and composing a team from this talent. Now, to be certain, while they are drafting, they do draft for need, but it is not always the primary criteria, for their draft selection–rather athleticism is the attribute of primacy. As for the QB position, and I have heard this through many NFL analyst, is that many teams are now considering “slotting the position”, that is to say, that in most instances you will not get a franchise Q, and if you have a sufficent amount of talent with rest of your team, you can still make Super Bowl runs, ala the Ravens, Bucs and now Russell Wilson. So, you can actually get good results with folks that are just above-average, and can make plays from time to time.
Don’t get me wrong, Wilson is no Trent Dilfer, but he is not at the upper margin hanging out with Manning, Brady, and Brees. What is telling, is that if you look at the Seahawks draft of the last 3 years, in the first 5 rounds or so, and you will see, you have 9-10 starters. And that is a very productive number……
36. I remember your blog title, “Petersen Principal” and was curious what you meant by that. Thought it meant Coach Pete may have reached his level of incompetence by taking the Washington job.
Now is that true? Woosley makes mistakes and is inaccurate while Higgins doesn’t make much mistakes. Or is it due to the plays and situations they are in that causes mistakes/non-mistakes and inaccuracy/accuracy? I’ve seen neither this past spring but looking over stats provided in previous blog topics both QB’s had good and bad days.

39. I haven’t been to any spring practices so I really have no answer there. I’m uncomfortable with any of the options right now. But based on what Higgins did a couple years ago when he did play, I trust him more than Woolsey after his Fresno game.
I recall hearing about a then-USC Asst Coach coming to Hawaii to watch a young QB at Coach Vinnie’s weekend sessions.
Oh, and one of the current group of Hawaii QB’s was there, too.
Well from watching practice and reports of practice. Woosley is the guy who throws more INTS but makes plays with his legs. And Higgins was jus making plays but not the guy throwing deep outs and hitches. Of coarse hard to tell right now since they are playing against a brand new defensive scheme.
43. Come on Kanaka…. I did not say Russell Wilson is Brees, Manning, Brady… But he is the difference in Seattle being a 7-9 team with a below average QB and a Super Bowl contender being a top 10 QB. Top 15 QBs still win super bowls… Big Ben, Flacco, and Eli to name 3. Just like I am not saying Hawaii needs a top 20 college QB. But someone in the top 40-50 range in order to have a winning season.
And you are taking too much credit away from Russell. He may not average 300 yards a game and 3 TDs but he moves the sticks on 3rd down better than 90% of the league. He’s so accurate on the deep ball. We can hype Marshawn Lynch all we want but he wasn’t winning games in Buffalo. Unger, Okung, and Giacomini were hurt most of the season so he was playing with a make shift offensive line….

Jeezy not to take away due kudos away from Wilson, as he played over and above, my point was directed that many teams are now veering towards creating greater over-all athleticism, versus finding that rare franchise QB. For me, the most impressive thing about Seattle was their D, and moreover the total team speed on the defensive side.
Holy cow Kailua moves on to semifinals with the youngest and most inexperienced team I can recall. Yesterday they had base runners so excited they were overtaking each other on the base paths but still pulled it off. But an early indication was seeing Maui beat Baldwin last week and Maui looked sloppy yesterday throwing the ball all over the place. But as I told Whitey a couple of days ago the young talent at the 13-14 pony age bracket is very impressive with guys who have a chance to end up being draftable in about 4 years. Waiakea and St. Louis today at 5pm. Huge matchup with Jordan Yamamoto- signed with Arizona and clocked at 93 in Arizona last fall and Kodi Medeiros – lefty considered among the top 2-3 pitchers in high school this year also throwing in mid 90’s. Come support high school athletics. They need the funds. $6 dollars parking and $9 adults.

54. I’m simply using Wilson as a example of what separates average from being great…. What separates lousy and good… Seahawks were 7-9 mediocre ball club with a good defense until they found a QB. Colts have an awful football team until Andrew Luck showed up… And I could flip it saying Colts were great until Manning got hurt.. Sugar Bowl team was great because we had Colt Brennan. Majority of the people I know agree that Hawaii was better the year before the undefeated season. Take him off that team and you get what we had year after.. Average..

57-Jeezy I would agree with you certainly on a college level. I think the QB position is especially hard to gauge on the pro level, and folks like Vince Young and Josh Freeman, who both had previously very strong seasons in the NFL, but have proven to be either inconsistent or with a limited ceiling, are prime examples on how difficult it is to identify a premier guy. Thus, if you have one-fantastic….but, if you don’t, there are other ways to build a team, at least in the NFL.
Mariotta did not play much his junior year because he was injured. I’m pretty sure Higgins would have sat if he wasn’t.
Take Washington -21 1/2 points over our Rainbow Warriors. 3 reasons. One, Chris Peterson. Two, the QB position, and Three, overall strength of the team, Pac 12 vs Mountain West.
Top to bottom, UW athletes are better than UH. Remember, UW dominated Boise St. last year.
UH hasn’t been able to be competitive against Boise St. in recent years. I’d like to think differently, but I have to be realistic. UW lost Keith Price, but Peterson will find either Jeff Linquist, or Cyler Miles (currently on suspension) to be the QB in the fall.

59. Which is why I say we should have been bringing in 2 QBs per class when NC initially got hired…. The more swings you take, the closer you are to finding a gem. As much as I like Zwahlen, we won’t see him till next year. Even next year, he’s probably going to take a year to learn offense.
Remember when Mack took over, 1 of the smart moves he did was brought in 2 JC QBs right away. The 5 JC WRs on the other hand was kind of dumb. As long as 1 stepped up to the competition, we were gonna be okay. Fortunately the walk on JC transfer(Moniz) ended up being better than Alexander and Rausch… Although I must say Alexander was not bad until he got hurt.
If you based your criteria on what Woolsey and Higgins did last year than you would have cause to be concerned about our quarterback situation. The same could be said about Rolo but as we all know know when Rolo got his chance again, he was terrific compared to the year before. Who would have given a 4th string quarterback a chance at the beginning of the season but Moniz surprised everyone. I guess what I’m saying is we don’t know beans even if we think we know so the coaches will start the quarterback based on their judgement. I hope whoever is the starter will have much success. When we coached baseball, the most talented player did not always start due to work ethic in practice, attitude, grades in school despite parents who wanted their child to start. We don’t see all the dynamics behind the scenes on an athletic team so I understand as fans on a blog you base so many opinions on pass performance, hype, hearsay etc. Personally I’m just happy we still have a Division 1 football team and who knows what the future will bring with the coming super conference alignments. My concern is can the UH athletic department change their culture of doing business in the future and being able to develop a creative marketing plan. Ben Jay would be smart to sit down with some of you tsaikos who have contributed some terrific ideas in the past.

1. Rolo had 2 months to learn the offense and work with the team?? Higgins and Woolsey have been working out with the same players and coaches for 2+ years now. Same like Timmy Chang in year 1. He was rushed into the offense.
2. Jones recruited 3 QBs that year in Flint, Rolo, and Chang. So Rolo had serious competition to beat out. Which is exactly what I am hinting we need to do now until we get one.
And yes Woolsey might figure it out… But the best way to find a QB is to recruit 5-6 of your guys ( high school and JC) within 2-3 seasons and let the best one start. Last year, Graham was basically handed the job by default. This year, Woolsey was groomed to win the job and he hasn’t taken it. I’m not a huge Wittek fan but I am all for competition so the best guy rises to the top. Also would have brought in a JC guy and let Wittek, Graham, Woolsey, JC guy, Reilly, and Higgins all battle it out… That is my definition of competition…

I remember Higgins making a lot of mistakes in games over the past 2 seasons, thats why Sean Schreoder was the starter. Higgins fumbled and threw picks just like Woosley in live game action last season too! Practice is just that, is practice… Some guys do well in practice and some guys turn it on in live game play. With whats on the roster and incoming QB’s I say lets wait until Fall ball to see who really wants the starting QB job.

I don’t understand how Ben Jay has aspirations to be a part of one the super conferences when they realign and he wants to build only a 30,000 seat stadium. Nothing about a 30,000 seat stadium says big time football. What happens if the team improves and attendance goes back up to what it once was and possibly even more? That leaves a lot of angry fans without a ticket. Sounds a lot like the Sugar Bowl when UH estimated how many tickets they needed and came up way short of the actual demand..I sure hope he rethinks the stadium idea.

I CAN’t see how a coach can prevent someone from graduating unless the guy is taking a course with the coachb. If the student has passing grades and the requisite credits, he graduates.
