Bam!

There were two thunderous hits during today’s scrimmage — one by Blaze Soares on running back Alex Green, the other by cornerback Steven Stepter on slotback Ryan Henry. Stepter’s hit dislodged Henry’s helmet and mouthpiece.

* * * * *

Bryant Moniz has entered the competition to serve as Greg Alexander’s primary backup at quarterback. After today’s scrimmage, Moniz is bracketed with Brent Rausch and Shane Austin on the depth chart.

* * * * *

Don’t forget that ESPN-U is showing a replay of the 2007 UH-Boise State game at 11 a.m. and the 2007 UH-Washington game at 2 p.m. I’ll go out on a limb and say there probably will be a happy outcome for UH fans.

WOW, what great memories watching the replay of 2005 UH vs. Michigan St. game on ESPN-U! Chad Owens and Timmy Change came full circle in that game. On top of that, watching the other replay of the 2007 UH vs. Fresno St. game. Just watching how easy Colt Brennan made it look was just awesome! It made me appreciate more of what Davonne Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullin did for that team!

    Happy Statehood Day!

ST-great story about Colt, Hawaii’s son, remembering that chicken skin season: Warrior mania being all the rage, both here and the mainland. Mainland cousins were emailing and begging for Warrior gear (balls, shirts and stickers) along with mac nuts and kona coffee; Grandchild number 7 named Brennan; how one person could galvanize our little state so completely; birthday parties and the like were scheduled as not to interfere with Game Day. Wow, what a season.

Hawaii is proud of all her sons, native and hanai. Thanks for the memories, ST.

  39. Garret August 21, 2009 7:57 am

The Idaho Statesman points out that UH had more players on the WAC’s All-decade team than BSU…I have no problem with CBS’s selection more Warriors than BSU players, especially since every Warrior selected was definitely deserving.

CBSSports.com selected an All-Decade team for the WAC. Predictably, Boise State was well represented. Unpredictably, however, Hawaii had more players on the team than the Broncos.

Hawaii placed quarterback Colt Brennan, wide receivers Davone Bess and Ashley Lelie, offensive lineman Samson Satele, linebacker Solomon Elimimian and kick returner Chad Owens on the team.

  40. Garret August 21, 2009 7:58 am

Another QB is apparently getting the “system QB” tag…Mel Kiper left Tim Tebow off his draft board.

He released his newest rankings today, and Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is at the top. Rounding out the Top 5: S Eric Berry (Tenn), DE Carlos Dunlap (UF), DT Gerald McCoy (OU) and DT Ndamukong Suh (Neb). Other QBs in the Top 25: Jevan Snead (Ole Miss, 7) and Colt McCoy (Texas, 11) No Tim Tebow.

  43. Don Weir August 21, 2009 8:15 am

I just got off of the phone with bighilofan2. It’s is true, my number was 24 at UH.
$$ for the bike is an awesome contribution Tsaiko’s!! The total will go into the Na Koa account, once received, with a balance posted on the blog site. We will draw against the balance as I will put the bike on my credit card today and have it shipped to the Sheraton in Seattle. I received the contact’s name from the hotel yesterday afternoon and I have all of the procedures for their needs ready to go.
The bike will be used for all UH sports if not in use for football.

A big Mahalo to Bobby Curran who stepped up to the mike and ran the auction last night at Murphy’s Pigskin Pigout.
Mahalo to Bob Hamilton who put up the two round trip tickets to San Diego; this paired with two nights at the US Grant Hotel, dinner for 2 at one of the Busalacchi Family restaurants, and two game tickets (Qualcomm Press Section 15, Row 1) to the Chargers/Redskins game on January 2,2010 put another $2950 into the Ben Yee Summer Football School Scholarship Fund.
Speaking of Ben Yee, we really need to have a Ben Yee look alike day at practice. UH baseball hat, glasses and a toothpick with a picture of Ben with everyone to post on the UH website and maybe push to have an interview done by the Advertiser on his recollections of UH football. Could be a nice lead off for the Centennial of UH Football.

Tomorrow is a team walk through. I spoke with Coach McMackin last night and he outlined the practice schedule: special teams walk through, offense and defense walk through. No hitting but it is a good time to see O and D alignments, possible starters working with 1st team units, and line movements in slow motion. For the defense we will probably see the 3-4 and its variations as well as walk through stunts; this is a good time to see linemen angles and LB’s angles on the stunts. Nothing will be given away as the stunts are used in all 3-4’s across the country, the interesting part comes at game time to see when the stunts are used. We might also see the variations on coverage as DB’s drop back into their zones. Different stunts put the D”B’s in different places as well.
See you on the sidelines. Please come up and say hello.

For ST: Paula Abdul will apparently not be doing Ugly Betty or Dancing with the Stars…in part because she hopes to still be on American Idol.

ABC confirmed exclusively to Showtracker on Sunday that talks between Abdul and the network have fallen apart and she will not be guest-starring on “Ugly Betty,” as had been rumored.

TMZ reported that part of the reason might be because Abdul is holding out on an offer to return to “American Idol” and that Abdul is also not likely to be among ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” contestants.

  56. Garret August 21, 2009 9:35 am

I’m guessing that UH fans would be interested in having UH colors on Bud Light cans–given past sponsorship agreements, I’m guessing that UH isn’t one of the 25+ schools that have objected to the custom cans.

Dozens of colleges are up in arms over a new Anheuser-Busch marketing campaign that features Bud Light beer cans emblazoned with local schools’ team colors.

Anheuser-Busch responds that the campaign is aimed only at fans who can drink legally and that it has long supported efforts to fight alcohol abuse. It notes that the cans don’t bear any school’s name or logo. And it says it will drop the campaign near any college that makes a formal complaint.

The Bud Light promotion, which involves 27 different color combinations, started rolling out this month. Purple-and-gold cans are being sold near the campus of Louisiana State University, and red-and-gold containers near Iowa State University.

  57. Garret August 21, 2009 9:39 am

Former UH QB is now a high school football head coach in Illinois.

Carmi-White County High School football coach Kurt Simon was more philosophical than tactical in his address to the Carmi Kiwanis Club Thursday at the White County Farm Bureau Building.

“We work our kids extremely hard,” said the former University of Hawaii and Eastern Illinois University quarterback. “In talking with other coaches, there are some that take the philosophy – and I’m not saying it’s right, wrong or indifferent – of making things extremely easy for the kids to get them to come out.

“We practice on Saturdays, we practice on Labor Day, we come in and lift three days a week, we do things the way I think they should be done. And when they come to practice, they work. And I’ll bet that although I dress 25, there are some other programs with larger numbers where you could stack six of them on top of one another and they’d probably equal about one of what I have. I just don’t believe that I can compromise the way that I think you’re supposed to teach kids how to work and how to be on a team.”

  58. Calvin from Kona August 21, 2009 9:48 am

2 Weeks til kickoff. I better get the tailgate gear out of storage and dusted off.

  59. Garret August 21, 2009 9:52 am

UH feature on the special teams.

One position that has Tormey excited is punter. Alex Dunnachie, a native of Heidleberg, Victoria, Australia, is considered one of the top prospects in recent history. Dunnachie hopes to stir echoes of the school’s last Aussie punter Mat McBriar, who has earned all-star status at both UH and in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. For Dunnachie, the season opener versus Central Arkansas will be his ultimate initiation into American football.

“We’re really pleased with Alex,” Tormey said. “I think he’s ahead of schedule. For a guy who hasn’t played an American football game before, he’s picking up the concepts really well. He has tremendous ability and I think he’s going to develop into an outstanding player.”

Wasn’t it nice for ESPNU to acknowledge our statehood during the two replays of the UH games last night?

The had a “Happy 50th Hawaii” icon on the screen throughout the whole broadcast.

Now, if the can get our school’s nickname right…. 🙄

This event for all Tsai-ko’s and lurkers from Hawaii and the mainland– especially those who might not meet at the tailgate because of different plans/groups. 71. Garret August 21, 2009 11:50 am

Central Arkansas is having their final scrimmage tomorrow. Their players will be *very* motivated for the scrimmage, as it will be a big factor (especially for those on the bubble) in determining which 90 players get to go to Hawaii. Wow, the WAC only allows a 65-player travel squad for conference games but Central Arkansas is bringing 90 to Aloha Stadium.

With the 2009 season opener less than two weeks away, the University of Central Arkansas Bears will have their final live scrimmage of the fall at 4 p.m. Saturday at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.

The 90 players will be trying to earn a spot on the plane that takes the Bears to face their first opponent, the University of Hawaii, on Sept. 4 in Honolulu.

  72. Garret August 21, 2009 11:51 am

I just realized that I probably read the article wrong–I think the team has 90 players and they are competing for travel squad spots, so they are bringing less than 90 to Hawaii.

good afternoon Tsakos. prayers go out to kent k.

  78. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:04 pm

ST, very sobering news about Kent Kafentzis. I always liked how he approached the game, second only to Mark of the Kafentzis clan.

Is there a fund set up to help bear his medical expenses or is that not necessary?

  79. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:10 pm

Howzit to my Tsaiko buddies. Any further kala needed for the bike? Looks like I missed out on the latest Tsaiko pledge drive while I was away.

Don Weir, please keep us apprised of specific item needs like this. Somehow it seems more fun to contribute when there is a specific goal in mind.

  80. A-House August 21, 2009 1:14 pm

Prayers and well wishes to Kent K for a speedy and full recovery.

  81. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 21, 2009 1:17 pm

    J-Dog,

The team WILL be wearing the 100th Anniversary patches this season.

Hmmm… My question is: “where are the all green jerseys”?

  82. A-House August 21, 2009 1:18 pm

Downtown 24hr fitness sightings – great to see Kai back in the gym.

Lo and behold, but who walks in around 6:45am -none other than J(J) – last I saw him was at the bench press pusing 250# at least 10X – whoa, that bugga no mo much muscles showing, but one strong bugga – before dat he was curling 40 and 50# bells – and I start with 15# bells!!!

eh, Homey, u gotta challenge J(J)!!

  83. d1島 August 21, 2009 1:22 pm

    WarriorMojo,

    Welcome back!

Somehow it seems more fun to contribute when there is a specific goal in mind.

Specifically, you can contribute one Warrior Dog and Beeg Beer (domestic is fine) to a fellow Tsaiko in the South EZ Blue in two weeks! 😛

  84. d1島 August 21, 2009 1:23 pm

    Bam!

…and just like that we get the scoops on practice today!

  85. oahu resident August 21, 2009 1:25 pm

Glad to see Moniz moving up the depth chart. He seemed to be the most impressive QB during the Warrior game at Aloha Stadium.

  86. d1島 August 21, 2009 1:25 pm

….no indication that there were any balls dislodged on those hits so I’ll take that as a good thing.

  87. d1島 August 21, 2009 1:29 pm

Hmmm….two ways to look at B. Moniz’ (wasn’t playing last year) ascension up the depth:
He’s really good; or the other two guys (were playing last year) not doing well enuf to stay ahead of him 🙄

  88. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:33 pm

    Happy Birthday Ralph

  90. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:36 pm

Congratulations to Bryant, but having three guys bracketed at #2 just two weeks out from the season is kinda worrisome. Coach Nick and Coach Ron gotta make a call already.

  91. Long Time UH Fan August 21, 2009 1:37 pm

    Catching up with the blog…

    BigHiloFan2

I’m in for the bike for two bits….check is in the mail…

  92. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:39 pm

Speaking of Ralph, Happy B-Day, but are you the one who sent me a couple of messages at WSN last month? I just saw those recently. Thanks for the interesting info if that was you.

  93. Ralph August 21, 2009 1:41 pm

yep, warriormojo, i did, i knew you visit the wsn a lot and being an attorney in common, i figured you would want to know.

  94. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:41 pm

ST or SJ/Myki/anyone else who knows: Does Coach Mack still have a no photos policy at practice? Got me a new rig that I’m just dying to try out.

  95. Long Time UH Fan August 21, 2009 1:42 pm

Happy birthday, doctor Ralph, and many more to come!

  96. curveball August 21, 2009 1:43 pm

The beginning of practice was mostly special teams..it is very clear they are taking this serious and they look pretty good..as always our punter is unreal…the scrimmage looked to be a way for the coaches to evaluate depth especially in the offense..the first team offense did not even play as a unit…one thing that looked obvious to me is we are not deep in O Line..The first team defense just destroyed the second team offense especially at the line…a lot of teams are going to be real surprised when they meet up with our defense..the boys are fast and they hit real hard..if I was playing offense I would have nightmares about Blaze…..

  97. WarriorMojo August 21, 2009 1:43 pm

Okay, thanks Ralph. You’re definitely correct about my wanting to know that. Don’t know him, though.

  98. letsgowarriors August 21, 2009 1:56 pm

    Bwahahaha!

  100. Garret August 21, 2009 2:07 pm

Nevada is closing all practices the rest of fall camp…I wonder what Chris Ault is planning to surprise Notre Dame with? It would be good for the WAC if Nevada won that game.

Nevada football coach Chris Ault announced today that all football practices and scrimmages will be closed for the remainder of fall camp.

In an e-mail to local media, spokesman Chad Hartley said Ault wanted to remove any possible distractions for the players.

The Wolf Pack opens the season Sept. 5 at Notre Dame.

  101. Garret August 21, 2009 2:09 pm

I agree with WarriorMojo in #78. It was sad to hear about Kent Kafentzis and I hope that his surgery went well today.

  102. Garret August 21, 2009 2:11 pm

I also agree with #90 that having three QBs at #2 QB with so little time left before the season starts (and before the travel roster has to be made for the road trip after the first game) is worrisome. I guess no QB has grabbed that #2 QB spot, but at least one of the backups should be expected to play this season…and at least one of them have to be left off the travel roster.

  104. Derek August 21, 2009 2:15 pm

Just finished watching the Boise St. game. It’s still feels good. The UW game is now on.

  105. Ralph August 21, 2009 2:41 pm

our coaches just got to make the tough call and move on. If they can’t decide on a qb as a back up with a game in 2 weeks, the coaches probably can’t decide on a play to call- shall we pass or run, wow, so many options and they give only 25 seconds to run the play. Maybe a reason we had trouble managing the clock and time outs.

  106. Ralph August 21, 2009 2:43 pm

Alexander gets the most reps, the other three qb’s divide what the second qb would have gotten-not enough for the qb to develop as a back up, all three lose out.

  107. curveball August 21, 2009 2:44 pm

I think todays practice will resolve the #2 QB situation…..

  108. NYUH August 21, 2009 3:05 pm

Wow, forgot how great the UH home uniforms looked when they played Washington. Watching the replays of the Notre Dame game reminds me of how the new ones PALE by comparison.

  109. PowderPuff August 21, 2009 3:14 pm

Any news on Kent’s procedure? Hoping and praying that all goes well with him today.

Thanks for the Pigskin Pigout bid sheet/results, c_c. I should’ve stayed for #1046. I really had my eye on that one…shucks.

  110. NYUH August 21, 2009 3:15 pm

Liked the white pants because when the shirts come out it doesn’t look so sloppy. And the dark, dark green helmets work with the black trim of the old home jerseys.

  111. Unkanesson August 21, 2009 3:15 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko Nation!

    Former Warrior report:
McBriar’s back! Just hit a 62-yard punt, it got called back on a penalty, then he kicked a 55-yarder. He’s going to be dodging the overhead scoreboard in the new Cowboy stadium all year. Woo hoo!!
Can’t wait to see how Dunnachie does for the Warriors this year! It’s a great thing to have a situation where you can get excited about the punting game!

  112. warriorfanny2 August 21, 2009 3:18 pm

Bryant has the X factor–that extra gear to make something happen. I wouldnt worry about the #2 spot–water will seek its level and Alexander will get his bell rung more than once during a long thirteen-game season that will be played without any two-week break (a 11 day and 10 day break) and has a slate of nine consecutive games.
Last year we played 3 QBs in one game….someone will step-in and get a live audition under fire without a red jersey.
I am more concerned about the slow start on O and that usually spells trouble if our OL is out of synch or our receivers are not running routes correctly. Who knows, maybe its coaching, it never looked this bad w JJ.

The bright spot is the hitting on D, which is a nice surprise to see since our O is lagging.
    We need time to jell….
Central Arkansas will feature two new coordinators on D and O, both of whom are internal promotions. So they will be a familiar landscape to the 48 returning leterwinners, but still new as coordinators.
We have had our share of injuries but so as everybody else, including ND, USC and the Bears of Conway, Arkansas.

Howzit Ralph! Happy Birthday to you.

Nice to have options off of that one little internal fund raiser. BHF2 just called a little while ago. Da buggah is really excited about how quickly things came together. I think he knew it could be done, but just didn’t aniticipate the response from da Tsaiko ohana.

We have to give props to the lurkers who came out of the woodwork to support. He said there were a few that wanted to remain anon.

Great job by all the bloggers who answered his call.

  121. Bulla August 21, 2009 4:34 pm

Happy Birthday Ralph and many more to come

Prayers for Kent’s family and surgery. Let us all be ever so grateful for this fragile thing called life.

Which brings up a good point, reading the blog here and there, don’t get to post and joke around like before, but my heart is still here and i laugh alot at what i read. i also get sad….sad to see some of the stuff on here because it is a reflection of our lives……..

he said she said, i’m right you’re wrong, you’re wrong i’m right, i say black you say white, i say up you say down, i say poh-tay-toe you say poh-tat-toe….

really……………what does it matter? we have a former UH star athlete fighting, literally fighting for his life, for the chance to take another breath, fighting for the chance to share his love with his family, fighting for the chance to just watch another sunrise and/or sunset….just fighting…..for his life.

and here we are fighting, that’s right, fighting amongst ourselves on manini stuff, really…….manini stuff. how much better do you feel when you belittle someone, when you stand on your soapbox and pound your chest…..how much better do you feel when you have to write volumes and volumes about something that in all reality, doesn’t really matter. i;m not pointing fingers, but if you think it’s you, then who knows….it might be……

just my 2 sense…..if someone wants to rip me about this post, so be it, i pray that you are blessed, that God’s favor rains upon you and your ohana so that you may enjoy another sunset together, and that the meal you share with your loved ones will be joyful and filled with laughter….but i will pray for you because no matter what you do….you cannot take the joy of the Lord from my heart and soul…..impossible.

Jesus said I have to love you, but that doesn’t mean i have to like you…..either way…..i want us ALL TO CHEER for our Warriors this season. they need us to support them, pray for them, and send them good thoughts…..because win or lose, they’re still our boys, they’re still our pride and joy, they’re still our WARRIORS. there is no other group that i know of, that continues to support in any means possible, our Warriors, and that i am very proud of. together, the sum of all is greater than just someone.

have a blessed night, if you have a choice to be kind or to be right, let us choose to be kind………………..aloha ke Akua “)

    Thoughts on today’s scrimmage:

Kahai Choy IS the lawnmower! Tough buggah, dat.

Tsai didn’t mention the collision/hit the Heun had. That guys has a motor! Animal? Yer darn tootin! It would be great see him, Soares, Lolotai and RJ on the field together some how. Heun as a rush end?

Defense: Speed kills. These guys are gonna be murderous!

Offense: Didn’t really see a complete first “O” today. Individuals from that unit looked good.

Dunnachie: They could put upper atmosphere meteorological testing equipment on the ball when he kicks. It goes that high and hangs that long!

Moniz: Yup, you can see where he’s making up ground in the race for back up.

Oh and Ms. Liz: Jett had a nice catch today… 😉

  123. letsgowarriors August 21, 2009 4:36 pm

  131. Don Weir August 21, 2009 4:48 pm

    Ralph, WarriorMojo, et al,
The trainers can only manage one bike at this time, at least for road trips.
The bike will be used during the day for all sports and in the morning it will be on the practice field for football. For the rest of the year it is used at the trainers discretion in terms of location.

I believe that $1575+ is more than enough for the bike but I know of no other requests in the pipeline at this time. bhf2 knows how much came in and is forwarding the amount to Na Koa Football Club offices. I will deposit all of the checks to the account. New items that are needed, if agreed upon by blog posts, will then be funded out of the balance. Once we go through that amount then bhf2 will be asked to once again do what he does best in this forum: put the word out.

    FYI
There is a new hire as a Nagatani Academic Center Academic Advisor (AA) probably coming on line prior to the first road trip. It has taken a while to work our way through the paperwork but Na Koa is funding this position at the request of Coach McMackin. Link this to the summer school for players and the mandatory study halls and we graduate more student/athletes than ever before. Not widely discussed is the hit taken by the Nagatani Academic staff due to the mandatory cuts. No politics inferred here, just the reality of the situation as they are down 3 academic staff positions and Na Koa had an opportunity to step up.
It is very likely that the AA will need some software upgrades or computer hardware upgrades. I will wait and see what is needed and let you all know.
Speaking for all Na Koa Football Club members and all football alumni I want to thank each Tsaiko for their contribution in this latest effort to support Warrior Football.

  140. royal crown August 21, 2009 5:31 pm

    To Bulla,

    Who are you preaching to?

    If it’s me, say so.

But don’t play the God card. Or the Jesus card. When you know this isn’t the proper venue for that, especially when you try to use them in your arguments. Just be straight up.

My faults… I acknowledge, longish post and having the propensity of knowing a lot– so big deal.

…And you know what I concede it probably turns people off.

…***and this is a note to the other posters*** that write long posts, too, keep this in mind that it’s not desired here (according to bulla).

But I wasn’t privy to everyone’s discontent about my longish post until now… and it has me confused as to why other posters say –good posts, I like your ideas, etc. etc….so at least I know how you feel now

I look at you and there’s a lot that turn me off, too. But I don’t have to speak cryptic. I don’t have to use innuendo to intimate an expression. I’m just straight up.

You ever realize how vain you are, and this is being candid.

..”.like my son did this, my son, my son, my son’s an all star, my son lifts this amount, my son runs this fast, my son got bentos and leis for the team “.

Sorry to burst you bubble, but it’s true.

As much as what I write having no revelation to you and is unsettling to you..you living in the shadow of you son and writing about all his exploits has no revelation to me, either.

Bottom line I can shorten my post.

  141. wafan August 21, 2009 5:33 pm

Had to watch BOTH games today on ESPN-U, while working away.
almost stimulated the ecomony by watching the everlasting commercials with whats -his-name selling cr*p-tastic products, but declined to purchase anything he was plugging.
Yea baby, great flashbacks of 2007 season. Thanks ESPNU for the 50th anniv. plug.

Wish I was there for the scrimmage. Sounds like the bugs will be worked out.

    Happy-Bday Ralphie boy.

  146. Ralph August 21, 2009 5:45 pm

Don Weir It’s all positive to have Na Koa fund an AA position, what the athletes need is a course in time management. The fb guys having academic issues tend to let the work slid and they are unable to complete their assignment on time or are not fully prepared at test time. If I recall correctly, Tsai reported that a few had assignments to complete before being allowed back on the team or field and the semester was already over.

  147. Bulla August 21, 2009 5:50 pm

    royal crown,

you’re entitled to your opinion. as i said, that was an observation, nothing more and nothing less, take it as you like. i was commenting because of kent’s battle with his tumor that he is going through at this very moment.

as you have a choice to read what i write, i have a choice to read what you write. i wish you only the best. regarding my son, your opinion is your opinion, why would i want to argue with you, i don’t know you, and i have nothing to argue with you about. it was an observation.

i’d rather focus on the positive things, the Warriors, the Wildcats, and anyone or anything who is trying to make this a better place. luckily, i go far back with a few Tsaikos, and it is those memories that will take us further. everyone chipping in what they can to help get some equipment for the football team, to me that is exciting and heart warming when a group can collectively come together for a good cause….don’t you think so?

by the way, i didn’t mean to offend you with ‘the Jesus card’, and i apologize if you are angered by that. i hope that you have a nice evening…..really, i choose to be kind……but thank you for your posts because it’s always good to see both sides of the fence, or an issue. don’t you agree?

    Bulla ~ @ #121

I respect and acknowledge your thoughts and opinions as we all know you for what you do…not only what you say in jest. Your goodness as you follow the way of the Lord is sincere.

What you do to honor your son’s accomplishments on the grid iron and in the class room is commendable, and more importantly, your business. Thank you for sharing the news with us because we also have followed his career right along with you and Lyn.

This post and it’s content is meant for Bulla and his ohana. (Sad that we have to put up a disclaimer).

Although it’s devastating to lose so many players just as the season is about to begin, we’re fortunate that the team really does have significant depth & players that will step up. If Central Arkansas thinks that they’ll catch UH “napping”, I think they’re in line for a very rude awakening!

    Royal Crown,

You are obviously intelligent, analytical and articulate, why not make some of our WAC opponents the object of your posts rather than fellow board members. Bulla is A-OK with me, and I’m sure that goes for the majority. He has every right to be proud — his son earned a athletic scholarship to pay for a college education. Now I know for the most part this is a UH forum, so I particularly don’t care to come here and read about the Mante Teo’s of the world, but bear in mind that Bulla’s boy wanted to come to UH, gave them every chance to offer, and UH passed. I’m sure those guys bleed Warrior colors. I’ve never thought Bulla was bragging, just sharing the goings on of his son. Bulla is a proud father and seems to be genuine and filled with a lot of aloha. Please cut him some slack.

So, Royal Crown, to get you on a preferred path, what do you think of the NCAA sitting back and doing nothing about the Boise St. field matching their uniforms? It seems like it is the NCAA that should step up for the good of all the colleges and implement some rules re: fairness. What’s next, they fire off some cannons to create a smokey field as their receivers run spot routes to certain points on the field?

but bradda rc, you gotta lighten up!

you take erryting so seriously. you going get false cracks for no good reason odda dan yu stay leadin wit yo chin! yu gettin p. o’d about erryting, comin right outta da gate. really! yu giving off a really bad vibe. and dis is frum somebody who appreciates summa da tings yu’re sayin, and wishin da best for all of us, boat yu and da rest ah da Tsaikos. honest.

so my ting to yu is, an i got no ax to grind wit yu cuz obviously yu no mo dan me but we all got da Warriors best intrest in mind, so …. stick to talking about da stuffs dats good, and pointin out what is bad about da team and da coaches, not about da nobodies on da internet. c’mon good buddy. we’re all on da same side. aren’t we?

A couple of us were talking today, and one of the things brought up was the thought that with all the bickering, it’s the lurkers that are hurt the most. There might be folks out there who want to say something, but are hesitant because they might be criticized. Not their opinion, but them. Who knows who those lurkers are, they could have good things to say that can make this blog better. But if we foster an environment of hostility, then this certainly will not be the forum to hear from those folks.

Whether you’re a newbie or blog veteran, I hope all of us (myself included) remember that we should treat each other with aloha.

    * * *

That said, I’m not sure if my ride from today is going to practice tomorrow, he said he might have something going on. Anybody to my west heading out to practice who can give me a ride? I know it’s just a walkthrough, but (1) I need to give return some things to sjmacro and myki, (2) give something to Slugger, and (3) I could use a malasada (I’ll give you my coffee, if Don doesn’t mind). 😀

  175. Don Weir August 21, 2009 8:03 pm

    Ralph,
Wish we could schedule a time management class but that is not a course that leads to a degree; AA is the next best thing. The class schedules are set up by UH Manoa Admin so it seems unlikely that this type of needed educational curriculum will ever be posted as a choice.
I would also opt for a class in Quicken or money mangagement so when the players get the low ball credit card offers or the easy payment car loan, or need to balance their check books/cash accounts they have the tools needed to make the good decisions.

On another note I received an offer from a Tsaiko in the greater Las Vegas area to use a local address for shipping. Trainers will make arrangements to pick up the bike. I hope to close this project tomorrow if possible.

Saturday, October 10: FRESNO STATE, Dole Middle School’s Cross-Country Fall Semester Program

Saturday, October 24: BOISE STATE, “Serving Up 1,000” Fundraiser honoring Coach Shoji’s 1,000th win – which should happen within a week in either direction of the drive

Bring eligible bottles and cans in any quantity from home to donate. We’ll pick up quantities in excess of 250 containers anywhere on O`ahu on the Sunday following the T-Gate provided that arrangements are made no later than the Friday before since we’ll have to borrow a truck for two days.

There will also be a donation jar in which to drop your spare change or loose bills.

Again, ALL of the redemption fees & cash donations will be made on behalf of the Tsaikos & will be sent to the designated recipients within 48 – 72 hours of each T-Gate. Mahalo in advance for supporting these athletic programs.

DirecTV might lose the VS network just as the college football season is about to start.

For the last couple of days, DirecTV satellite television subscribers have been seeing a crawl if they’ve watched any Versus network programming telling them that as of Aug. 31, DirecTV will no longer carry Versus.

For college football and NHL fans who get their television through DirecTV, this could be bad news.

Five Pacific 10 Conference games (as yet undetermined) as well as an assortment of Big 12 and Mountain West games, and an NHL package of 54 games could become unavailable to DirecTV subscribers just when those seasons start.

I’m hungry…please don’t talk about malasadas! I can still picture the Leonard’s trailer in the Windward Mall parking lot…I went there 5 times while I was in Hawaii in June.

On a related note, I’ve lost all the weight that I gained in Hawaii due to working out and cutting out the feasts from my Mom and Mother-in-law and cutting out the malasadas. Lori cooks great food, but she makes reasonable portions and I don’t have malasadas to indulge in…

On a serious note, I hope that the Warriors can avoid any more serious injuries this season. Injuries to certain positions (starting QB, OL, etc.) could especially be harmful, but injuries anywhere could be problematic. UH is already without Brashton, Lane, Ginlack, etc.

Aaron Kia’s brother Micah is out for the season with a knee injury. Texas lost *four* TEs for the season already…they don’t really have any other players that they recruited as TEs. Central Arkansas lost their top returning WR.

limited substitutions. first half, once you go out u can’t return for the half. second half, a player can return once. He usually play a second team player for the first 15 minutes, and lets the first team play the remaining 30 minutes. Rarely more than 3 subs per half unless he is trying to find the right combination or deciding on a young team who will be his primary players.

  211. Garret August 21, 2009 9:53 pm

Mouton’s injury forced him to miss tonight’s game and another Titans player might have grabbed the returner role that he was competing for.

The Titans had been looking for someone to step up in the return game this preseason.

Against the Cowboys, someone did — rookie running back Javon Ringer, who also continued to make plays on offense.

Following a Dallas touchdown in the first quarter, Ringer returned the kickoff 51 yards. He initially looked like he was bottled up in the middle of the field, but he cut to his left and found an opening. Then he was hit out of bounds, and the penalty gave the Titans even better field position, at the Dallas 32.

“He’s a good little player,” Fisher said. “That was the first time he had returned for a long time … and he was bouncing around and making plays for us.”

The Titans signed veteran returner Mark Jones this offseason, but he’s missed all of training camp and the first three preseason games because of a hamstring injury. Other return candidates — Davis and Ryan Mouton — also missed Friday’s game with injuries.

  212. Garret August 21, 2009 9:57 pm

It is bad enough I have to miss watching the Warriors practice…missing practice AND malasadas??? Wow.

At least I have a date out with Lori tomorrow night–the kids have a play-date at a friend’s home and we have 3 hours to ourselves. Lori also filled out some survey and got a $25 gift card to Chili’s, so I get to have a chicken fried steak, appetizer and dessert. With the special they have going on, dinner for 2 is just $20, so the gift card should basically cover our bill, tax, and almost all of the tip.

i would take a haupia filled malasada and they drizzle some dark chocolate right on top. finish with a couple of shakes of confectioner’s sugar.

add one venti coffee with a shot of espresso from starbucks….

  220. Kekoa August 21, 2009 10:50 pm

I like that venti Kona Coffee with a shot of Kalua & Creme on top!

  221. warriorfanny2 August 21, 2009 10:54 pm

An important factor no one mentions in punting is the time between ballsnap and foot-to-the-ball. You need a stop watch not a second-hand…. clocking a dozen-times with a controlled rush Alex Dunnachie is at least .03/sec off of Tim Grasso/Jake Ingram…that was taken early and late in practice and non w a full scale rush….but yes, if Alex can get it off on time…well, this aussie has snap and thunder in his legs….and speaking of kicking not punting, a FG kicker can win or lose 3 games a year on average….would be kool to see 75% from 39-in….that is on the redzone border….even a mercurial and pyschotic Dan Kelly was able to do that in 2008. 🙂

  222. Kekoa August 21, 2009 11:07 pm

Got to get some sleep. Early morning service up at Kapalama…

Burying the hatchet and going to bed wf2.

    Good nite all!

  223. Slugger August 21, 2009 11:16 pm

Wonder if I’ll be dreaming about malasadas filled with lilikoi filling?

Night all! See you at practice tomorrow.

  224. al August 21, 2009 11:52 pm

malasadas with that cinnamon sugar is awesome. besides the cinnamon lowers the blood/sugar levels.

  225. al August 21, 2009 11:53 pm

i am glad the day has ended on a sweet note.

  226. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 22, 2009 12:05 am

Al, is the Tuesday’s Cattle Call a buffet, order off the menu, or family-style where everyone splits the check? Back when DrDoc worked at Kuhio Park Terrace, we often ate take-out from Golden Coin in Kalihi.. Have a 10 am appointment in Kapolei and a 2 pm appointment in town so a 12 noon lunch would work out nicely.

  227. bighilofan2 August 22, 2009 12:32 am

yeah, i’m glad the day ending on a nice note.

    Great article in today’s HA.

    i gotta ask.
how come we have a #1 QB and 3 #2s? is there really 3?

make the call. make the coach make the call. teach him to be decisive. to act decisively. to improve his evaluation skills.

  236. Garret August 22, 2009 4:17 am

Bess is diligent about taking notes during position meetings.

Starting wide receiver Davone Bess is a visual learner as well.

“Even though you know it from a mental standpoint, when you’re writing it down, it’s almost like you’re engraving it into your system,” Bess says.

“It kind of beats it into you and makes you want to go out and perform and do all the right things. I pretty much write almost everything down.”

Bess also makes full use of the team-issued yellow highlighters.

“If I have to make something known, I’ll put an exclamation mark at the end of it with a highlighter,” Bess says. “Something to make it stick out.”

  237. Garret August 22, 2009 4:20 am

How could the NCAA lose Michael Wadsworth’s transcripts? It is sad that he has to be held out of practices during the middle of camp.

  238. rage777 August 22, 2009 5:17 am

Article from LA Times about the women professional soccer match, talks about Natasha Kai. (Hopefully I get the quotes right)

“Rampone’s a leader out there,” Rogers said. The Sol coach is also concerned about two other U.S. national team players on Sky Blue’s roster — forward Natasha Kai and goalkeeper Jenni Branam.

“[Kai] can be so dangerous. She can turn the game instantly. They’ve been pretty solid at the back,” Rogers said. “Branam’s done an outstanding job. She’s like a warrior out there. Every time I see her, she’s making big saves, limping around, pulling herself back up and making another big save. It’s amazing. They’re going to be hard to break down.”

  239. Garret August 22, 2009 5:42 am

I do not understand why my comment is awaiting moderation, as the quote that I’m citing just shows that Jake is projected to make New England’s 53-man roster.

  240. Garret August 22, 2009 5:47 am

I have *two* RGM posts awaiting moderation–I think that is because of the way the Canadian paper refers to RGM as a return specia list. Since I cannot post the article, I’ll just mention that yesterday RGM had 24.8 yards per kickoff return and 7 yards per punt return.

  241. Garret August 22, 2009 5:49 am

My guess was correct–I cannot post quotes about RGM and Jake Ingram because the articles have the word “specia list” (without the space I added to the word).

    See y’all at the walk-through!

  255. Garret August 22, 2009 6:52 am

Note about how David Veikune will be used in two roles today for Cleveland.

Rookie David Veikune will see the majority of his reps at ILB, but will lineup wide as a pass rusher on occasion.

  256. Kekoa (iPhone) August 22, 2009 6:52 am

Gotta go! Have a good day everybody…

  257. Garret August 22, 2009 6:54 am

    Slugger,

One other thing that I found interesting in that article was that the player from Utah State that is Bess’ teammate talked about how he didn’t take notes well in college or even in high school. So, I guess he made it through the classroom and on the field at Utah State without taking notes…which would explain a lot about the lack of player development at Utah State.

  258. Garret August 22, 2009 6:57 am

Good morning myki, whitey, and everyone else. Enjoy the practice and the malasadas for those who are lucky enough to go.

I’m going to take my kids to the park now and will be offline all day, but I look forward to reading about today’s practice after my kids are asleep tonight.

  260. bighilofan2 August 22, 2009 7:59 am

    coaches,

i’ll help you decide on #2. for next week and the long term.

who is/are bringing notepads when attending meetings and watching films? Rausch? Austin? Moniz?

the issue really comes down to who will make the quick decisions, and most often correct, right? they all sound pretty accurate.

Austin looks the more athletic, but Moniz is making the bigger plays

my gut tells me da west side guy makes # 2.

and that is what rolo needs to work on, intuition and verbalization. 😀

we’ll see if my college edumacated guess is correctomundo. we’ll know in a week. 😀

    ha. soundin like MKiper. 😆

  261. Pomai August 22, 2009 8:16 am

    June 22, 2009, 10:42 am
The Quad Countdown: No. 71 Hawaii
    By Paul Myerberg

Tidbit (coaching edition): Two coaching tidbits to pass along. First, the brother Ron and Cal Lee serve as Hawaii’s offensive and defensive coordinator, respectively, making them – to the best of the Countdown’s knowledge – the only brother pair to serve as F.B.S. coordinators at the same school.

One thing we know about U.H. football: the team always, always has wide receivers. The same could be said about offensive linemen.

Players to watch: The Warriors can trace a late-season push offensively on the coaching staff’s decision to make the senior quarterback Greg Alexander the permanent starter. Alexander, a JUCO transfer, split time in the first half of the season with the senior Inoke Funaki (since moved to running back), but started the final six games of the season; he took over the starting role after a terrific second-half performance against Nevada, propelling the Warriors to the win. For the season, Alexander threw for 1,895 yards and 14 touchdowns (against only 5 picks), completing 62.9 percent of his passes. Yes, these numbers fall well short of Brennan’s lofty totals, but his play did more than enough to earn him the No. 1 spot this fall. As always, U.H. will have receivers to burn. Greg Salas as well as the junior running back-turned-receiver Kealoha Pilares Another name to watch for is the junior college enrollee Rodney Bradley. I touted the senior running back Leon Wright-Jackson as a player to watch last fall. He has too much talent to be so inefficient. Joining him at running back are the aforementioned Funaki, senior Jayson Rego and the juniors Chizzy Dimude and Alex Green; the latter pair could work into the mix immediately. Four players with starting experience return up front, none more important than the senior center John Estes. Estes has earned first-team all-WAC honors in each of the last two seasons, and is a contender for national recognition as a senior. The best news for the offensive line is the addition of coach Gordy Shaw, one of the most respected line coaches in the F.B.S. His primary concern will be improving the team’s all-important pass protection.

There may be issues on defense. One fact standing in Hawaii’s favor is McMackin’s defensive background, which may yield a surprising performance despite breaking in nine new The only other lineman with starting experience is the sophomore tackle Vaughn Meatoga, who will take over for Josh Leonard at the right tackle spot. A player to watch is the junior Elliot Purcell, who was a meaningful part of the end rotation in 2008. At safety, keep an eye out for the JUCO transfer Aaron Brown, who is the favorite to replace Monteilh at strong safety. Brown was the highest rated recruit in Hawaii’s 2009 class.

Position battle to watch: With all due respect to the rest of the 2008 defensive starters, the Warriors will have a difficult time replacing only four contributors: Elimimian, Adam Leonard, Mouton and Veikune. This quartet not only provided tremendous production, but in the case of the first three, rank among the best players U.H. has ever produced at their positions.

(Quick aside: If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the U.H. roster, it’s to never believe a player’s listed weight. And to always double-check my spelling.) Hawaii will look toward the seniors R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane and Blaze Soares at the two outside spots. Linebacker will not so much see a “position battle” as a fight to see who can replace Elimimian and Leonard’s production. Can these step up? The junior Jeremy Bryant and the senior Chris Black stand atop the depth chart at cornerback, but they’ll need to hold off the freshman Lewis Walker and the juniors Melvin Hopkins and Lametrius Davis to earn the starting nods.

Game(s) to watch: Hawaii will play a 13-game schedule for the second straight season. Like last year, it may have a Hawaii Bowl birth sealed up before the home finale, but I’m still interested in seeing how teams like Navy and Wisconsin handle a late-season trip off the mainland. In WAC play, Hawaii’s games with Louisiana Tech, Fresno State and Nevada will determine who finishes second to Boise State in the final standings. Did I just give away my WAC champion?

Season breakdown & prediction: It’s a role reversal for the 2009 Warriors, who go from having a questionable offense and a talented defense to vice versa. If this team could return last year’s defense and combine it with what will be an improved offensive unit, I would have U.H. as the second-best team in the WAC. However, I don’t think McMackin and his staff will be able to offset losing nine starters on this side of the ball, five of whom earned all-WAC honors on at least one occasion. So where do I put the Warriors in the WAC pecking order? Fifth, in terms of where it falls on the Countdown, but in a tie with Fresno State and Louisiana Tech for third. I like the offense, which returns seven starters, and think it can make great strides over its mediocre performance of a season ago. Obviously, my often-repeated concerns over the defense limit my faith in Hawaii’s conference title hopes, but I believe the unit will do enough to allow U.H. to make another trip to the Hawaii Bowl. I think the Warriors will match last fall’s 7-6 regular season; if, somehow, the defense remains strong, eight wins is well within the range of possibility.

Dream season: Despite its major losses on defense, Hawaii puts it all together in a 10-3 regular season. The Warriors finish tied with Boise State atop the WAC.

Nightmare season: The offense is average and the defense suspect. For the first time since 2000, the Warriors finish with less than five wins: 4-9, 3-5 in the WAC.

Where do Hawaii fans congregate: The chatter at WarriorSportsNetwork.com is as good as it gets, especially for a non-B.C.S.-conference team. You can find additional U.H. football talk at SportsHawaii.com. For an in-depth look at the program, take a look at Stephen Tsai’s blog for The Honolulu Advertiser.

  267. bighilofan2 August 22, 2009 8:58 am

    humid in Hilo.

  268. bighilofan2 August 22, 2009 9:06 am

for me, the plus side of Warrior Football is the offensive line, Shaw, and the special teams, Tormey and M Smith. They’ll get da Aussie to get the ball away faster, and make tackles.

for me, the questionmark side is the offensive quarterback decision-making during game time. last year the verbage between the coaches and the QB was not so spiffy.

I’m hoping that the positive enthusiasm and visual display of confidence by Shaw, Tormey, MSmith and Aranda (he shows up in da office about da same time da chickens start making noises) will rub off on da guyz waitin or eligible fo da retirement check.

one difference between mediocre and great is ENTHUSIASM!

  280. Jason August 22, 2009 10:37 am

Walkthrough went well, they started off with a big emphasis on special teams. Then they broke down into different units, with the offense in the middle of the field, DL here, DBs there, etc. Pretty simple, nothing too noteworthy to me. Then again, I was just trying to fight the sun and the wind all day while sitting on those hard bleachers. 😀

It was really nice to meet Don Weir and a bunch of others from Nā Koa today. The malasadas were nice—we had so many left over, he had me take two dozen to share amongst the fans attending the practice.

bighilofan2: Since you already mailed in what you got to Don, I gave him $25 in cash. He said to make sure you note that in your records.

  282. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 22, 2009 10:58 am

On Thursday, August 27, at the Board of Regents monthly meeting, there are a number of athletic issues on the agenda. The meeting, which starts at 9 am, will be held at Windward Community College, Hale Akoakoa 103-105.

Unfortunately, the agenda MAY not be posted on UH Regents website becaue they mail them out. If anyone is interested in getting a copy before the meeting, you can call 956-8213

Although all of the relevant items are going to be discussed in Executive Session before the actual vote which will be done in Open Session, there will be an opportunity for the public to make comments at the beginning of the meeting.

FYI: Only one of the fifteen Regents is a woman.

At 10 am the same day, the Stadium Authority will also hold its monthly meeting; however, the secretary forgot to attach the agenda to the e-mail notice. Because of the three-day weekend, I won’t be able to find out what’s on the agenda until Monday morning since they often don’t post their agendas on-line prior to meetings either.

I’m curious as to how they’re going to issue Requests for Proposals/Bids for replace of the artificial turf before the start of the 2010 season.

  283. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 22, 2009 11:01 am

Whoops! for replace of the artificial turf = for replacement of the artificial turf

  284. Lightning and thunder and lots of rain at FedEx Field. And the peanut gallery looks like UNLV when the Warriors play. Uh Oh. Too many terrible towels…

I really enjoy UH football and keep up with the Warriors. I even went to school with Colt, Satele, Percell and a few others. I sure hope they continue to do the Ha’a. I will be disappointed if they do not.

Imagine if they do not do the Ha’a and a Mainland team comes here to Aloha Stadium and does it, that would suck.
