Warriors sign kicker

Placekicker Tyler Hadden of California High in Whittier, Calif, has signed a letter of intent with the Warriors.

Hadden is 5 feet 11 and 175 pounds.

He has his own Web site: http://tylerhadden.com/profile.html

The Warriors had scheduled a recruiting trip for a kicker from Texas this weekend. But yesterday morning, UH learned Hadden had mad a verbal commitment with New Mexico State. The Warriors then made a scholarship offer to Hadden, who accepted. Earlier, Hadden was given a letter of intent, just in case. He signed it last night, then faxed a copy to UH. Hadden and UH are working on arrangements for a Hawaii visit.

    okay. we needed a kicker.
he should feel fortunate to have a scholie out of hs.
    rare for kickers.

  3. al February 5, 2010 12:05 am

    welcome aboard tyler!

  4. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:07 am

what happened to the kicker from Texas?

  5. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:08 am

and is Tyler Hadden #4 or #11 rated kicker? Who was the Texas kicker and what was his rating?

  6. al February 5, 2010 12:08 am

now can we have a running back too?

  7. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:09 am

Is Enos on scholarship or was a scholarship promised if he did well last season?

  8. al February 5, 2010 12:10 am

    #11

    hunnicutt #4

but tyler hadden’s hs number was 4.

  9. al February 5, 2010 12:11 am

    now, now ralph be nice.

  10. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:15 am

we got Green, Lister, Elisara, Dimude, convert one of our shorter OL. How about the Beast? RS year so train him, go north south young man, no need juking, keep the pads low and head for the goal posts.

  11. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:18 am

be nice about what? do we have 2 kickers on scholarships? that’s a luxury UH can’t afford.

  12. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:20 am

when the recruit comes out on a visit with his mom, who pays for the mom’s expenses?

  13. Ralph February 5, 2010 12:22 am

why would Hadden want to trip Hawaii after signing his NLI, too late to change his mind. Save money, tell him to stay home and report for summer school.

  14. SteveM February 5, 2010 12:28 am

    3rd? …behind Al and Ralph. 🙂

    Good night!

  15. SteveM February 5, 2010 12:35 am

…wait a sec… if you have cruised before (large passenger ship at least 30,000 gross tons), please see the following site and email me…

all recruits on a trip must be accompanied by a parent. (i think unless he is 21). the entire trip for both is free.

  17. al February 5, 2010 12:43 am

i suppose he is entitled to the trip

  18. whitey February 5, 2010 1:28 am

Good morning Tsaikos from the pacific northwest. Congrats to our latest Warrior and with that, 99.9% recruiting is done for 2010. Well done!!!

A little late but congratulations to all the new Hawaii Warrior Recruits. Looking forward to following your careers!

    Good Aloha Friday to everyone!!!

Welcome to our newest Warrior Mango!!!

  22. protector February 5, 2010 3:48 am

    Welcome to Tyler Hadden!

Just out of curiosity, where would he have rated against Mercado, Hocher and Hunnicutt? Anybody seen film on all four?? All I can say is that when I saw Mercado in person, he blew me away. In practice before the big game (didn’t get to kick during), saw him nail the 50-yarders. Made 2 out of 3 55-yarders. Then finished with a 60-yarder from the middle of the ‘H’ logo.

Tyler better be pretty darn good.

  23. bstunna2002 February 5, 2010 3:57 am

So ST are the coaches done recruiting or are they gonna pull out a few more rabbits from their hats?

  24. wafan February 5, 2010 3:58 am

Hi, Protector! You are up early this fine Friday. Have a great one!

  25. Jorge Claypoole February 5, 2010 4:34 am

Hey very nice blog!! Man .. Beautiful .. Amazing .. I will bookmark your blog and take the feeds also…

  26. mctruck February 5, 2010 4:45 am

Consider this free visit/trip for Tyler’s mom as a, “dry-run” for when she has to travel back and forth to watch her Warrior-son play for UH. Welcome, Tyler Hadden. Go kick some you know what?!

  27. mctruck February 5, 2010 4:49 am

Just wondering if kicking fb’s at sea level as opposed to higher elevation makes for a better kicker?, just like when Elam came from Georgia?

  28. Bulla February 5, 2010 5:47 am

    #16 Al.

recruits are paid for, and only recruits….family can accompany but on their dime…unless that has changed in the last 2 years. otherwise, our budget woudl be more in the red than it is……just a thought.

  29. Bulla February 5, 2010 5:49 am

    #10 Ralph,

he has run with the ball at various camps as a FB, and there is no east/west in his game…..unless he’s at a buffet table….only north/south and full speed ahead….but he also had fun blocking guys in the hole……he liked it when he was able to ‘lift’ the LB’s off the ground…….oh well……….April 1st is coming soon

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Happy Aloha/Furlough Friday.

Welcome to the Warrior ohana Tyler Hadden!

Tough loss for the Warriors last night. Tonight will be different! See you guys there! Hmmm, should we try sitting near the student section tonight? Will we get chased out?

Traffic alert for today and tomorrow – avoid the area around a certain large private school at all costs (literally and figuratively).

  32. Bulla February 5, 2010 5:56 am

    good morning d1,

saw some nice photos on FB with #2 son in uniform, purple is a regal color. have a good day

nice meeting you last week, mahalo for coming 🙂

    Erryboddy have a terrific day!

Tyler Hadden does not look like your average kicker. Nice add.

  36. bighilofan2 February 5, 2010 7:02 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Coaches,

overall, a good good job. gotta work on your PR though. little more spit and shine. but overall, you done good. reall goood.

    Postmanke,

I like his versatility. He can kick and punt.

    Welcome Tyler Hadden.

  39. NC FAN February 5, 2010 7:21 am

This is a huge mistake. UH should have learned from last year’s kicker (through the same kicking coach) that this is bottom of the barrel. I thought UH evaluated talent beforehand. Hope that he decommits and signs with NM State when they counter with an offer. There is no way this kid is any competition for the current kickers, who are medioacre at best.

  40. Committed Road Warrior February 5, 2010 7:27 am

Today is one of the few times I’ll ever be home from work this early. Surely it helps that the Office of Personnel Management issued the following guidance in anticipation of the 20-30″ of snow we’re expecting between now and Saturday night:

Federal Government Operating Status in the Washington, DC, Area

The following message applies only to Friday, February 5, 2010

The Federal Government will be open in the morning operating under an unscheduled leave policy with a planned 4 hour early dismissal.

Employees reporting for work should be dismissed by their agencies 4 hours earlier than their normal departure time from work.

OPM is continuing to closely monitor developing weather conditions should there be a need to reassess the Government’s operating status.

  41. jm2375 February 5, 2010 7:33 am

CRW – stay safe!! If possible, telecommute! Feds used to dismiss their employees according to how far away they lived. Do they still do that? I think one time it took my cousin 8 hours to go 50 miles from L’Enfant Plaza to Fredericksburg. Think he spent 4 hours in Alexandria.

  42. RedZone February 5, 2010 7:42 am

When the players come in for a visit they meet with the academic people. I think that this is a plus.

  45. Buffoman February 5, 2010 7:46 am

Ralph, in the previous post you listed all of the folks at Arizona Western. Are those folks soft commits to UH or it’s a mish-mash of commits to various schools? OR, there’s no commits and it’s anybody’s meat market once the young men are available to take the leap?

That is one very nice looking list of studs.

  46. RedZone February 5, 2010 7:48 am

    Miano on radio right now.

  47. Committed Road Warrior February 5, 2010 7:55 am

    jm2375:

Not that I recall. Think it’s done by whether your duty station is within the NCR. Of course, one’s immediate supervisor may exercise additional flexibility if needed, especially for those folks who live out in Fredericksburg or Fauquier County.

Telecommute? We just rolled it out a month or two ago at my agency…..I put in for it and got rejected.

8 hours to get to Fredericksburg? Wow! Did they drive, or were they stuck on the VRE for some ungodly sum of time?

  48. jm2375 February 5, 2010 8:04 am

CRW – he was driving. BTW, do they still have those places downtown where you can pick someone up so they can use the carpool lanes?

  49. Committed Road Warrior February 5, 2010 8:14 am

    jm2375:

You mean slug lines? If so, yep. There’s even a dedicated website to this art of “organized hitchhiking.”

    http://www.slug-lines.com/

  50. postmanke February 5, 2010 8:16 am

    BH2-

remember the days where you left everything on the field, game or practice, walked over the trash can and hurled your lunch? no matter what you played..

I think they did a great job too – but did they really leave everything on the recruiting field, did they really give every recruit their 808 percent, effort, persistence, selling the coaches vision on how that they can get to the next level or contend for a WAC title have a great college life, the process, develop the relationships that leaves local recruits, parents, coaches with a good taste in their mouths no matter what the choice, or did they short changed themselves and leave it up to the recruits to contact them after an offer has been made and not follow up until it was too late?

The $1,000,000 perception minus 5% – for most of us is a head scratching, no

  51. postmanke February 5, 2010 8:21 am

But recruiting season is pau already so whatever. The Defense is going to be nuts, I can’t wait to see Paipai fly around the field with this size!

  52. Old Diver February 5, 2010 8:27 am

Appears Hadden was about 65 to 70 yards on kickoffs. If he wins a couple games for us next year his trip to Hawaii would have been well worth it.

  53. warrior February 5, 2010 8:33 am

the only thing i see that could end up backfiring with signing this kicker is that i remember seeing on boards that Mercado, although he said he had interest rom places like USC, MICHIGAN, etc etc, he prettty much summed it up saying those places are way too cold and he will end up at UH anyways to his friends…i would assume he would try out for kicker when he gets back (i just hope that the coaches had some kind of communication so im not wrong here) and he probably will end up walking on. i would bet that he would be ours if he didnt leave before we could offer. that said, welcome tyler hadden and good luck, you will be very important this coming season

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2010 8:38 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I’m getting a “kick” outta reading the comments on our latest recruit. Welcome aboard Mr. Hadden!

Add to the list of running backs Hogan Rosehill. Mr. Tsai likes the look of this young rb. There’s also the guy from Punahou too. In any case, we appear to be loaded with ball carries. I cant wait to see what Lister can do.

  59. Mrs. A-House February 5, 2010 9:08 am

    ST or al:

I am confused, happens all the time, but, what happened to Hunnicut?

Thought he was scheduled to “trip” this weekend? Did he decide to not “trip” and sign with another school?

With Enos becoming a “senior”, if Mercado returns and walks-on, it could be a real batle for the kicking position this year or next season!

  60. A-House February 5, 2010 9:09 am

Ok, Mrs A-House, how come you no change your “handle’ after you use my computer at work???

Sorry, my fault for not looking before hitting the “submit” button!

Hope you guys are enjoying your day and happy for the newest Warriors.

  62. maui warrior February 5, 2010 9:13 am

    Re: Mercado

The other day someone posted that he went back to florida and didn’t leave any contact info for the coaches

  63. Old Diver February 5, 2010 9:14 am

Wasn’t the story that UH wanted Mercado and another kicker to walk on and battle it out for the scholarship? And that Mercado was not happy with that and we back to Florida? Obviously these are just rumors. Our offense is not good enough yet to gamble on not having a kicking game. Coaches know that and are addressing the problem.

  64. Kazz February 5, 2010 9:15 am

    ST,

What’s the outlook on Aaron Rink competing to get into the pass rush rotation next season?

  65. bstunna2002 February 5, 2010 9:25 am

I think Enos loses his schollie unfortunate but it could happen.

  66. PapaJohn February 5, 2010 9:38 am

    Kazz,

I thought Aaron Rink was no longer on the team just like your other man crush Quentin Beaver?

  67. LizKauai m/ February 5, 2010 9:41 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Happy Friday!
    HiHo!

  68. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 9:55 am

    Couple of things:

    • UH now will have two kickers on scholarship. (Enos was on scholarship in 2009.)
    • Hunnicutt was the No. 4 kicker Mack mentioned at his news conference. He was scheduled to visit this weekend. When UH learned it might lose Hadden, it asked Hunnicutt if he would make a verbal commitment. Apparently, he did not, and made no assurances he would commit after the weekend visit. UH then went back to Hadden, who said he would commit. It was the Law & Order deal: First one to take the offer gets the scholie.
    • Why another kicker? UH felt it needed more competition at that position this year. UH had trouble with kickoffs last year.
    • Mercado, I believe, moved back to Florida. He was offered a walk-on invitation, with, I imagine, the understanding he would get a scholie if he did well. Sort of the deal Luke Ingram, Dan Kelly, Colt Brennan received.

  69. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 9:57 am

Tuesday’s show: Do you want Donovan or McMackin?

  70. Slugger February 5, 2010 9:57 am

    CRW & jmxxxx,

I LIKE that term ‘slugging’ for organized car pooling. 🙂

I used to get rides into the City or pick up a rider in the East Bay when I drove. The bridge tolls are going up, and they are proposing a fee of $1.50, even with carpoolers. Everyone needs cash…

  71. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 9:57 am

    Or Darius Bright?

  72. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 9:58 am

    Re: Aaron Rink.
The last time I saw Rink he was trying to get back onto the team. He missed all of last year with an injury.
There were some questions as to how much time he had left on the clock. I’m not sure if he was a senior or junior last year.

  73. Slugger February 5, 2010 9:59 am

    #70 ~ ST, either!

  74. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:01 am

Mercado had a really good year at Kahuku, easily the best kicker in the state last year.
But I also had a feeling he was strategically placed at Kahuku, as he supposedly didn’t return for the spring semester.
Nothing wrong with parents trying to do what they can to get their kids scholarships.

  75. al February 5, 2010 10:03 am

    jd, mack, or bright?

because of the recruit season just done would he answer candidly and frankly on the prospecting campaign that just ended?

if so, then mack it is for me.

  76. Pauoa Boy February 5, 2010 10:04 am

Welcome to Warrior Nation Tyler Hadden…

  77. Pauoa Boy February 5, 2010 10:05 am

I choose Coach Mack as well…

  78. al February 5, 2010 10:06 am

#75 make no bones about it. his dad even made public statements to that effect.

interesting side note has been, if he were such a prime time guy, why leave one of the hotbeds of football recruiting?

  79. al February 5, 2010 10:08 am

i’d like to see bright and all the new warriors eventually on the chat guest list.

one guy who has not had any media love is london sapolu. i’d like to see him here as well.

  80. al February 5, 2010 10:09 am

and for the encore guest, how about bringing jd in march when he is addressing one of his biggest concerns during his regime?

  81. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:10 am

I think one of the perception problems is the UH staff didn’t articulate its recruiting strategy.
There actually is a five-year chart (which Tombo Ahi was basically able to replicate) that shows the breakdowns by position and class.
They want to spread it out so they don’t get into a situation where they would have to replace an entire offense (2008) or defense (2009).
I know there were questions as to why they take two small slotbacks but only one quarterback. According to their chart, they are losing all of their top-of-the-depth chart slots after this season but are well-stocked at quarterback.
Now if they actually shared their strategy, as they were encouraged to do by administrators, then people wouldn’t wonder why they made the Law & Order offer to Manley, or why they went for slots, or why they didn’t go full blown at certain positions.
But they didn’t, or if they did, they didn’t do it eloquently, which is why there is second-guessing two days later.

  82. al February 5, 2010 10:11 am

when are they going to unveil the walkons from the tryout?
when are they going to unveil the invited walkons for this year?

that is something i’d be very interested in seeing.

  83. Kazz February 5, 2010 10:13 am

    ST,

Roster said “SR” for Rink last season.

Speaking of Jim Donovan, is he ok? At last week’s volleball matches, saw him with kinesio tape on his arms and on his neck. That stuff athletes use instead of athletic tape to deal with injuries.

  84. Pauoa Boy February 5, 2010 10:15 am

Wow, finally was able to watch all the highlight videos of all of this years recruiting class…I must say we are going to be killing people for years. Allen Sampson video had to slow-mo lil bit he’s so frikkin fast. All the Defensive guys look to be some head bangers…definitely need to show the nation who the hardest hitting team in college football is. Tuilau, Maggitt and Umu could be dangerous in the secondary with their size, speed and instincts. The OLine boys Lefotu, Afusia, Shigematsu, Sapolu, and Loyd are huge and could develop into a monstrous line. Plus we get Tyler Hadden, a legit kicker straight out of high school, with 4yrs. to play, I can’t wait to see these boys in akshon…Great Job Coaches…

  85. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:17 am

    Kazz:
Donovan said he has some sort of neck strain.
    These are stressful times.
The economy is in the tank.
He has to “suggest” voluntary pay cuts to coaches.
And basketball needs to turn it around. Fast.
Trouble is the back-end sports — softball, baseball, track — aren’t going to boost the financial picture.

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2010 10:18 am

Mack. Maybe he’d want to comment and answer questions now that the recruiting dust has settled.

  87. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:19 am

The thing I like is that they actually recruited some players for special teams.
I think the last time they did that was when they signed Francis Maka.

  88. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2010 10:20 am

Sad week. First, “Hizzoner” passes away, and now the Hungry Lion has closed. Nothing is certain but change, I guess.

  89. Darren February 5, 2010 10:21 am

Mack…so all the blogosphere recruiting experts can inform him what to do for 2011. Think of all the time, money and resources that UH could save…

  90. jeezy3 February 5, 2010 10:23 am

Stephen, Is Frank Gaines or Anterio Sloan still in the mix? I thought we offered Gaines. As for Sloan, I am sure Mack would grey shirt someone to get him on the team

  91. mauifarmdog February 5, 2010 10:23 am

    #70 Mack

but if you get Donovan- Ask him about starting football programs at the community colleges so we can have more football opportunities for our local boys on the neighbor islands.

  92. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:24 am

    jeezy3
UH says it’s done. I don’t think so.

  93. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2010 10:25 am

    What?
    Hungry Lion closed?

  94. A-House February 5, 2010 10:30 am

ST’s right…this is pretty damn informative. I’m guessing that we’re looking for JC slots next year. This recruiting stuff is a piece of cake.

    Second choice is Chancellor Hinshaw.

    Menu choice: Jim Donovan

    mahalo!

  101. lava February 5, 2010 10:55 am

Not sure Mercado was “easily” the best kicker in the State last year. I think one guy could give him a good contest. Might have been the guy for Leileihua.

Mercado had some accuracy issues me thinks.

  102. al February 5, 2010 10:58 am

on getting any kahuku guys this year.

although this year’s kahuku class was not as star studded as in the past, i felt it was imperative that we land at least one kahuku guy each year.

i, believe that he should at least offer an invited walkon status to veteson sauni, the nose tackle that is the one responsible for making jamora and schenke look good.

Sum Ting Wong, blog handle, used to blog with us in 2007, met he and his family at our Sugar Bowl breakfast across from Kekoa’s condo and we really had a great time.

Had the distinct honor of meeting the late Kuuilei Pomai and Uku from LA who has not posted for a long time. Believe his grand daughter is a weather person on a local tv station. Uku brought us a ton of ti leaves.

Also, met Merv, our Georgia Bulldog who was initiated into the Tsaiko family, with his 2 sons and son’s friend, and Ben, JaM’s brother and his wife.

At the “official” Tsaiko meal at Harrahs, met Eternity Actual, who took a round trip train ride from LA to NOLA, met a family of Warrior supporters who we later met in NOLA, and True Green.

    Great time and great memories!!!

  133. J-Dog February 5, 2010 12:10 pm

One of the UH football boards showed a comment Mercado made to a friend about probably returning to UH to try and give Enos some competition. I wonder if the signing of Hadden will change that. If not, would be funny (or not) if he as a walk-on beat 2 scholarship guys.

Is Brian Blumberg still gonna be on the team? I don’t think the coaches would keep 3 kickers + 1 punter on the roster. Especially since Blumberg is not on scholarship.

  134. al February 5, 2010 12:13 pm

hadden is a very good get.
because should he beat out enos he will also be invaluable on the road because he is also an accomplished punter. he could serve as the back up punter as well or who knows he could give the aussie some real competition.

  135. NYUH February 5, 2010 12:14 pm

    Tuesday’s show? McMackin

  136. al February 5, 2010 12:15 pm

i think these days mercado will be looking elsewhere.

hadden seems like a real nice kid and i suspect that the coaches liked what they saw during his home visit. that would include his family members as well.

  137. expat February 5, 2010 12:23 pm

If Enos works some things out and performs then Hadden can redshirt – and assuming he works out they could be set for a while. If Hadden has to come in and kick right away it isn’t the end of the world. I think from a recruiting standpoint it is better to not pull scholarships from players just because they aren’t as good as maybe you hoped they would be. There are valid reasons to pull a scholarship, but as long as the player is trying then performance shouldn’t be one of them. The kickers are kind of on their own — no dedicated coach, etc.

Better that the coaches keep their recruiting needs and strategies to themselves. There is more b#itchin and moaning on the forums and from the fans, but recruiting is tough, especially with teams like Notre Dame in the mix. No need show everyone the cards in your hand.

If the coaches have specific needs to fill then that is what they should be concentrating on. There is always the special athlete you are not going to pass up, but unless you focus on your needs you are not going to have a solid program. Can’t have a whole team made up of linebackers, no matter how good each one is.

So similar to my chinese name, Sun Tim Wong…
so many Wongs in Hawaii but probably not related

Blogger SumTinWong does not have the surname of Wong. Very infrequent poster nowadays, but his first appearance was interesting…

In December of 2007 when brew808 and Garret were trying to come up with the last few Sugar Bowl tickets for the Tsai-kos, a new kid named Iwonderwhytheyhateme emerged and said he could purchase 4 tickets. BUT, he was a student and didn’t have the money to buy them. Then SumTinWong offered to meet IWWTHM at the ticket office and pay for them. Afterwards, he sent the tickets to Garret for distribution and reimbursement.

The chicken-skin part was that none of them have ever met before nor knew each other’s real names…except they were Tsai-kos.

eh… who knows? Maybe the kickers will be able to help each other out and make one another better in the end, eh? I’m all for better.

If doled out properly, there are probably enough scholies to build the team three deep in all positions with a few scholies left for those injury prone and need ‘fresh legs’ positions.

Kazz on #84 JD status. I agree with ST, stress related. JD probably got a whip lash when he looked at the mbb financial spreadsheet of revenues and expenses. But he should be happy, mvb is coming back strong, 2400+ at the UCLA game. Keep it exciting, play good vb, win most of the games, the fans will come to watch a winner. Same would happen for mbb, but got to win and play good bb.

  150. Guys in the office February 5, 2010 1:08 pm

Mercado will get a shot somewhere, but he’s going to need to adjust his approach to the ball on field goals. Did anyone watch him kick this year? We all noticed it in “the office.” It’s an unusual style. He must have a five-step approach on field-goal attempts; almost like a kickoff. He’s going to need to cut down the number of approach steps to the ball when he plays in college, and I don’t know how that will impact his accuracy and distance. But he no doubt has a strong leg. Best of luck to him.

On kickoffs, it was hard to tell how deep he was kicking it. He was kicking from the 40, so it gave the illusion they were decently deep. As for the field-goals, most seemed to be short distance. I remember one or two were right at the 30 (making it a 40 yarder). Would’ve liked to see how he did on 40 yard+ & 50 yard attempts.

close stats, but UH comes out short. Better passing, better serve receive, slow the hitters down to run a transition, don’t let Rawson serve, and UH hitters Hunt and Walker got to keep the ball in the court. UCLA puts up a block, so be it, better than a free point by hitting it out.

    Regarding # 192

The wahine basketball team is 9-12 (3-5)….this represents reviving the program.
Coach Wade beat a top ranked team and is nationally ranked.
Seems to me Charlie Wade and Diana Takahara-Dias are moving in the right direction.
Given the overall program outcome-, Jim Donovan made the best choice in coaches in Wade and Takahara-Dias. Not sure what anyone would want to laugh-out-loud at that.

Good to see you back on the blog! Like Ronnie sez, gotta earn another BCS Bowl bid and redeem ourselves in NOLA. It would be nice to have a reunion with all who were there, and more! That Sushi place was like being at home!

Happy Birthday 702WarriorNation! It was a lot of fun sharing the good food and fellowship with your family and so many Tsaiko’s in Vegas.

Looking forward to Sep 2011 to roll around for a UH payback game with UNLV. I’m sure LV will plan another get together for us at Kiku Hana. I’m certain Brew808 and others from the mainland Tsaiko Nation will be there as well.

Diana will be in Vegas from 14 June thru the 21st for her Hanakeawe family reunion. She has reserved all the condo units on the top floor of one building for her family! That conversation went well. It sounded like she was talking to the clerk from Rap’s Hawaii bit with Mr. Frogtree!

I gotta hang back and take care of Pops, but I’ll make a quick sweep thru Vegas on my way to West Point in Sept. while Diana stays back. I’ll stay in LV during the early part of the week to clear the trail dust before heading on east. I want to try my luck again at the *M* Casino (I’m anxious to try for entertainment purposes only). Very cool place with a fantastic looking Japanese restaurant inside.

I’m so glad that the blog has made it possible for me to get to know people like 702WarriorNation. And all Warrior fans shouldn’t forget that he quietly helped out with the bike shipping during the past season…he didn’t ask for credit or want any recognition, he just wanted to help them program.

Scotland found an interesting application for their UAVs–they are being used literally as “eyes in the sky” to improve the performance of their rugby team. I could really see big-budget sports teams using this in the future, as the picture quality would be much better than what they could get from a tall tower.

  212. RedZone February 5, 2010 10:24 pm

Wade has Umlauf. Dias lost her leading scorer from last year who is reshirting but will be back. She has a young team with only one senor on it. She then lost 2 players who started to really contribute to injuries. I think it is too early to judge her yet. Wade followed Wilton who was a pretty good coach. Dias is following you know who and has a lot more damage to repair. So far I think she is doing a pretty good job.

Aloha Tsaiko Nation, first and foremost I am “APPALLED” to the statement of Roderick Flemming being the ” Best 2 yr. player in UH basketball history” Garbage and ridiculous ! Fleming at best is a one dimensional player with “NO HEART” and cannot lead “NO” team to a championship because to his lack of desire for the game and a “SORRY”
Head Coach who has no ideal of how to lead a basketball prorgam in which he has been an “ASSISTANT” his entire whole UH basketball pitiful life !

I have watched and not said enough to this embarresment of a “fab 5” player who has no idea of how the game is played or relate to the players of today in which at the end of the season Bob Nash will be “FIRED” because to his lack of ability to not only coached but used the tremendous resources of ex Hawaii players who has reached out to him and tried to “HELP” him in which he has turned his back and done it his way in which it is “NO WAY” to a successful sorry basketball season.

Dayton Moringa the UH basketball beat writer needs to get out of Hawaii la la land and stop writing “nonsense” to you readers out there in trying to explain of this sorry Hawaii basketball season. The team has “NO HEART” and the players with there inept coaches all need to be let go as the sorry old ancient flex offense and pillsbury pineapple turn over team has been a “HUGHE” dissapointment with men’s volleyball being the front cover and talk about UH team during the new year of 2010, with rainbow basketball being obscured and obsolete. WOW is all I can say !

Dwain Williams has taken Hawaii for a ride and “KNEW” he was not coming back because of his ego vs. Fab Five ego of Bob Nash in which there was no medium and Coach Nash with his “stubborn” self acclaim persona being outdated to the young players today and had UCLA Great Larry Farmer assisting him that still couldn’t “PRODUCE”. A total scam and embaressment to Hawaii basketball and “ALL” it’s glory history !

Three years and out with “NO” one to blame but himself. All Bob had to do was “reach out” as “ALL” of my Hawaii past players was willing to help as I would of lead the way and brought him “basketball athletes” but with his “dull personality” you see the results that you see an uninteresting “LOSING” season with the wahine basketball team getting more adulation then the bows.

Who ever be the coach for the bows one thing for sure “IF” he does not reach out or respect the past players of Rainbow glory then “LOSING” will be the final destination and I will not be subjected to watch a once “BIG” time program be the joke of kalua pig with out no sushi because at the old rainbow age of 51 years I will school Bob and his “sorry” bows with power and finess game that left you folks in 1981 and still rising today to be the “toast of tinsel town” all over Southern California !

Can we play as I take “ALL” comers !

Welcome to the Warrior Nation, Tyler! Too bad the UH MVB team couldn’t take at least one from the Bruins. Keep playing hard guys…the atmosphere is great when you play, especially when that crazy Rubberband Man is there.

al – thanks for your sobering but true words in #131. Have a fabulous Super Bowl weekend, everyone!

  221. EH NO MAKE ! February 5, 2010 10:53 pm

Me, I have faith in Charlie Wade. There’s been enough “moments” to see that he does have enough there to win, but the team needs to show a bit more consistencey.

Me, I have faith in Dana Takahara-Dias, it’s almost like a Mr. Miyagi kind of thing, “it’ll get worse before it gets better”. I do believe it will get better.

Sad to say I agree with RAINBOW CLIFF, Bo Nash is just not cutting. I mean it took long enough to get rid of Dwain Williams. The kid was cancer from the first day he walked onto campus.
Oh, and Rod Flemings, please take off those God-awful gold shoes. Can we please all just at least LOOK like a team?

Where womens bball was in terms of fan support and how the players perform on the court in response to the coaching staff is a drastic improvement.

Make no mistake about it. Its night and day at Wahine basketball and players snuffed out last season like Galdones are contributing. Players like Allie Patterson are coming out.

The proof is there. The effort is obvious and the team chemistry is better.

I got nothing else to say considering that Mr. Westsideview/Warriorfanny2 actually had the nerve to defend Bolla’s actions as merely a frustrated coach trying to coach a bunch of “crybabies”. How stupid is that?

  228. Kekoa February 5, 2010 11:20 pm

Howzit R/C!…You’re not MAD as hell are you? No, I didn’t think so. Like you, I’m also disappointed at the lack of success the MBB team has had. There are certainly some problems with this squad.

Without mentioning any particular players, it’s not hard to see that the mix of players on the floor is in disarray. You’ve nailed some of the key things that have caused them failure.

The one big problem is exactly what you mentioned several times. No heart. As you and all of us who love this game know, you gotta love the game to push it to a higher level.

There doesn’t seem to be a desire to bring the ball up court with maximum intensity, or keep the flow of the offense in a constant continuity mode. I mentioned how the guards seem to be ‘sleep’ walking once before. They force shots as time runs out, and never follow their shot on the offensive boards for 2nd chance shots.

Hustling back on defense is a small, but forgotten part of the game. Coach Nash and his crew have been struggling with this and other motiviational segments of the game. If the team doesn’t come out of this sleep walk, they will be a large reason why he will be given his walking papers.

Say hello to Rhonda big guy, and continue schooling those young hoopsters on the finer points of the game.

    G’nite!

  229. RainbowCliff February 5, 2010 11:32 pm

Double B and Eh No Make ! what I have said is the “TRUTH” and you being intelligent Hawaii fans should have it not swept under neath the carpet or window wax with paper and gloves. The “game” shall always be played with hardwork and “GREAT” determination !

Playing for Hawaii is not a privelage but an “HONOR” and if you have scholarship basketball players and coaches who cannot live to that code then it is “adios amigos” plain and simple. Bob has had ample time to show BUT if you never have your “OWN” philosophy and coached on any level then you don’t know how to adjust or inspire your players to “WIN” which is the game is all about.

When I played for UH we played all comers, the baddest in all over NCAA collegiate basketball ! We lost alot and we won some BUT I will not change it for one second because we played with all heart and competed against the finest in all over NCAA College basketball history and played an aggressive man to man defense with a pressing and running game.

PRIDE is what we are talking about here and this team has none with a fab five player head coach of yester years having a “GOLDEN” opportunity in which he has embarresed the program and now leaves it in turmoil and undire straits. Sorry to be this way because it is not usually me BUT when I see my Rainbow Love being outclass by men’s volleyball and wahine basketball kind folks “enough is enough” !

Football will be #1 but when I played from 76-81 the Rainbow Basketball Warriors was the talk of Honolulu and blaisdel arena was the place to go as my era performed night in and night out with all out hustle and desire as this era of rainbow team a pathetic oximoron of basketball casualtie as I have had to watch and be “very shameful” !

  230. el guapo February 5, 2010 11:44 pm

one was 9-18 last year, 6-5 so far this year with at least 18 more games
another was 8-23 last year, 9-12 this year with at least 8 more games

A lot more games to be played and stories to be written.

  231. RainbowCliff February 5, 2010 11:54 pm

Kekoa Bruddah a complete pleasure ! Sorry to rage that way but I have had enough of this sorry Bob Nash Team and the excuses that is given to him on this sad dissapointing rainbow basketball season. Being a former player and playing at a still top level just tells me one thing “LOVE THE GAME” as this 2010 team has no love, desire or compassion to the round ball.

Roderick Flemming is “NO” way compared to 2 year players of past as I can name Aaron Strayhorn, Eric Bowman, Thomas Louden and Joltin Joe Frazier that Flemming will get roasted everyday in practice or pick-up at klum or your new facility complex. The patsy schedule that is played with no name talent is just salt to the wounds with no pepper in sight.

Don’t understand Bob Nash or care as obvious he is one lost man trying his best to keep a job because of his lame past claim to crown and glory !

So sorry and very sad !

  232. Ralph February 5, 2010 11:56 pm

Wayne Vieira, new director of ticket sales for UH. A partnership of Koa Anuenue and the UH Foundation. A position I hope that will energize ticket sales all year long and not have dead periods per sport. UH has got to keep on selling tickets from initial offer to game time. SMU selling their fb season tickets next weekend for prior subscribers, capitalizing on their bowl victory. UH dilly dallied after winning the sugar bowl, don’t let anyone off the bandwagon, get’um when their interest is at the highest level.

    Al ~

Joanie Weston of the Bay City Bombers used to light up the Civic with her ‘grudge’ matches against Ann Cavello. They both defined the sport of Roller Derby. After she died in 1997, Goldie Hawn productions bought her life story. There was one film made of her called Demon of the Derby made for recruiting derby girls. It has caused a resurgence of the sport in many parts of the country.

Ann Cavello was affectionately known as *Banana Nose* because she had her nose broken 12 times during her very long and illustrious career. It all came to an end in 2006 when she died of Liver cancer.

My mom was a big Derby fan, she admired Ann’s toughness. Pops was not. He would drop me off to keep her from defending her pal Ann on the tracks. She was also prone to violence at events like Wrestling at the Civic. It made it tough on a kid when his mom could take out an usher in the best 2 out of 3 falls.

mvb had an announced crowd of over 3500+, coupled with last night’s 2400+, Charlie’s got the wagon rolling and the fans are jumping on. I wonder what would have happened if JD had the Na Wahine play a bb at 5 pm followed by a mvb match, maybe a larger crowd for the Na Wahine, more exposure, future spectators returning to support the ladies. Think out of the box, the mbb program is dying, don’t let it drag the Na Wahine with them, the Na Wahine is moving on up slowly, but they are moving up. Coach Dana is in a tough recruiting spot, only one scholie this season, Kuehu, and I believe Bungaite was a hold over recruit from Bolla, and she has only one senior this season, Dita.

  236. Kekoa February 6, 2010 12:08 am

Oh…and good night to you Rainbow Cliff. I understand your passion and your concern for a program that is in trouble. I do wish they would consult with you on their future search for real talent.

“PRIDE is what we are talking about here and this team has none with a fab five player head coach of yester years having a “GOLDEN” opportunity in which he has embarresed the program and now leaves it in turmoil and undire straits.”

Sounds like your pride is hurt. Well personally, I think you are being selfish about what the current players are feeling regarding PRIDE. I also feel that EMBARRASSED, is not how you spell what is transpiring from the bottom of your heart, but rather, the heart of your bottom. You have points of definite concern by all, no doubt, but in speaking with your tone of anger, you exhibit a total lack of respect and class that is befitting to the person that Coach Nash is and all that he has meant to the University of Hawaii irregardless of what his coaching tenure bears. He is more respectable a man than all the green you bleed right now…in my humble opinion.

  240. Ralph February 6, 2010 12:19 am

Na Wahine softball kicks off their season with a tournament on thursday, Feb. 11. Where are the publicity, the promotions, etc, to get people ready for softball. Less than a week and not a creature was stirring in the UHAD promoting softball. Yeah, no admissions charge, its in the red, its like an after thought, why let fans know that there is a season that is about to begin in Manoa. the Na Wahine deserves the support of the UHAD office, imagine if the program drew a lot of fans and they paid a nominal fee to watch, less red for the AD. Remember UH baseball with coach les, humble beginnings but it took off with Tatsuno. Get rid of your media people or give them new directions-support the programs.

  241. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 6, 2010 1:05 am

    Ralph,

UHAD should be reaching out to youth teams and offer deals for teams to attend Wahine bball.

For softball some HS teams and youth teams attend sometimes but getting the younger athletes interested is a plus in growing a new fanbase.

Haka, you don’t know what you are talking about and have no idea of how Hawaii past athletes regard one another as there is “NOTHING” existing of a fraternity only buddy buddy of ancient history and time in which majority of players from my era “dont care” of their Hawaii past.

You make the statement “mad” about what as I can care less. You have to watch Nash Bows and live with the excuses of a team that is robotic, turnover crazy and losing in front of what maybe 3,000 fans in your Stanley.

Hawaii basketball has done nothing for me nor do I look for them for anything as camraderie with in the Hawaii Rainbow basketball history of former players are dark and silent with no light to the tunnel and no where to find them. You can idolize all of Nash qualities that you want to but the bottom line is success, progress and fan support as those factors are not happening and the program is generating no money with the wahine basketball team and men’s volleyball being the talk of you posters.

So, Mr. Haka until you been on the inside and seen the Hawaii sport politics that I have seen then maybe you can make your personal attacks at me on what I have said and how I have said it as I have been on the bottom lost and forgotten BUT I continue to strive for better on my own merit as many of my former bows I support today caring and giving to them in which Coach Bob and the UH basketball program does “NOTHING” !

Find your self a hammick bra and drink a mai tai it may help you in the long run to see the picture as you are cloudy as they come !

  244. haka February 6, 2010 8:09 pm
