Warriors picked 5th

The Warriors are predicted to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference’s six-team West Division in polling of football media. The poll was released during this morning MWC Media Days.

“That’s a little disappointing,” said left tackle Ben Clarke, who is representing the Warriors at the annual meet-the-press event. “It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a prediction. We’ll show ‘em.”

Clarke said the predictions are based largely on past performances. The Warriors were 4-9 in 2014 and 8-29 in Norm Chow’s first three seasons as head coach.

“We haven’t had a good record for the past three years, so I can’t blame anyone for guessing we’re going to be second-to-last in the (division),” Clarke said. “I think we have a lot better team this year. We’ll show them what we have.”

West Division
1. San Diego State (27 first-place votes) — 177 points
2. Fresno State (3) — 141
3. Nevada — 113
4. San Jose State — 91
5. Hawaii — 70
6. UNLV 38

Mountain Division
1. Boise State (28) — 177
2. Utah State (2) — 150
3. Colorado State — 108
4. Air Force — 90
5. Wyoming — 64
6. New Mexico — 41

Just start winning. I have confidence in this team. Go Warriors!!!

  2. Akamai Okole July 28, 2015 5:42 am

    Great Morning All!

    Lotsa headroom in that prediction.

    Go Get ’em, Warriors!

  3. Shoko July 28, 2015 5:47 am

Its hard not to pick Boise playing for the conference championship and possibly head to another bowl game. However, since they play the bottom three West Division opponents and somehow go undefeated in the regular season, it would be hard to justify their strength of schedule as being worthy of the playoffs.

SA article by Ferd Lewis today …
“Jay made more than $13,000 a month in bonuses, UH says”
“The school’s former athletic director was due $370K when he left, records show”

  5. 3-Prong July 28, 2015 7:10 am

ST: Do you know what triggers allowed BJ to “earn” the $370,000 in bonuses during his tenure? An inquiring mind wants to know. Good to hear that The new AD caps out at $25,000 in bonuses. Guess someone learned a hard lesson.

This episode reminds me of Yakov Smirnoff….”what a country”….only should be changed to, “what an administration”…

Imagine you get canned from ur job…for a lack performance…n before you exit you throw ur employer under the bus…then bad-mouth them… n they in turn give you a
    $370 k bonus… amazing…only in Hawaii…

DID SUMONE SAY WE ARE SHORT OF CASH ???

If Garret can come out from under a rock so can I. Besides, UH will have a fellow Mater Dei Monarch grad, QB and captain. I of course wish only the best for Max and the Warriors,\. I have followed Max since he suddenly showed up at Mater Dei many years back. He always seemed to fail when pressured. This is his redemption year.
I’ll be in Diamond Head for the whole month of December, so I need at least a Hawaii Bowl Bid.

And that’s why we play the games.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  13. islandman July 28, 2015 8:36 am

Phil Steele said on Curran show, UH 7 pt underdog to Colorado. That Colorado could have one of the top QB’s in the nation , that the Buffs could reach seven wins this year and he thinks MacIntyre is very good coach. Because of UH’s schedule, he can’t quite see seven wins for them, but sees improvement.

  14. Former UH Athlete July 28, 2015 8:43 am

    At first I was like, “5th isn’t to bad…”

But then I remembered that there are two divisions in the MWC… Doh!!!

I think there will be improvement this year. I don’t know if there will be enough to save Chow’s job (especially given the scheduling). Other than the QB spot, I think whoever is HC in 2016 is going to have some talent to build on.

I’m pretty curious to see what this new OC’s offense will look like with a healthy Hayens & Stubblefield, who missed all of last season with injuries. If Wittek can play halfway to his talent level, then the UH offense should be able to score some points.

I’m not too sure on how the DL will hold up after losing Samia, Malepeai, and Yap. These guys did a pretty good job last season as the defense was pretty good until injuries and the accumulated effects of a lot of 3 and outs leading to late season fatigue took their tolls (which led to lots of high scoring games). There’s not much depth returning and having a brutal first 5 games is going to be hard (understatement).

  15. jimmy the lock July 28, 2015 9:06 am

Looks like a laid back media day.

Ben Clarke looks like a grown up Jimmy Neutron.

    5th, top 5 baby!

  16. Tempmanoa July 28, 2015 9:09 am

After our record the last three years, it is hard for anyone to pick us higher than 5th (in a six team divsion). At least we are not a solid pick for last like UNLV. Up to Chow to let the new coordinators try to turn things around, and for the players to play hard and prove everyone wrong.and

  17. Stephen Tsai July 28, 2015 10:01 am

At the California, the spread is 7.5

  18. SteveM July 28, 2015 10:10 am

    Good morning everyone!

Yeah, I might be biased but I think Hawaii has the coolest looking helmet of the bunch.

Really good photos, ST. The large size and the behind-the-scenes shots really makes me feel like I’m there…

Sure took Goodell a long time to just stay the course.

  22. H-Man July 28, 2015 1:50 pm

UH Helmet. Yup, gotta agree. It’s the coolest. Waiting to see what the new uniform(s) look like. Colorado has a really good passing game, but UH is playing at home and its defense is improved, especially in the secondary. Plus, Hawaii has the offensive pieces to score more points this season. Warriors wins this one.

  23. cocobean July 28, 2015 2:18 pm

Got my season tickets today now just waiting for my parking pass. I must say this is the least excited I’ve been going into a new football season. I know the team should be improved over last year’s team but the bland home games and the daunting road schedule leaves me very blase about the upcoming season. Not to mention 13 games in a row. I’ve always been optimistic going into a new season except this year I’m not expecting too much even though this might be the best team Chow has had. I hope by the opening kickoff I’m out of the malaise I’m in.

  24. oneseason July 28, 2015 2:28 pm

#10 … st. anthony trojan .. SA subscription was really cheap for non-HI zip codes. Curious what it is now. They don’t tell you cost upfront
… don’t want to PO HI residents I guess.

  25. jimmy the lock July 28, 2015 2:34 pm

$4.17/month (digital subscription) for international customers. Sorry but not ad free.

  26. oneseason July 28, 2015 2:40 pm

Phil Steele’s prediction for UH sounds like a 6-win season then. 5 wins (say UC Davis, New Mexico, UNLV, SJSU, and Louisiana-Monroe) would to me be equivalent to last year’s performance. If 7-wins is too many, that pretty much just leaves 6-wins. That would not be much to write home about IMO after 4 years. I hope he is wrong and 7 or 8 wins are in the cards.

  27. jimmy the lock July 28, 2015 3:06 pm

Hopefully Steele went to the same forecasting school as Guy Hagi.

  28. Buffoman July 28, 2015 3:16 pm

#26 I don’t know if I agree. That weather forecaster does his best to cover all of the bases to totally confuse the listener. The report would be, “expect a dry, hot day, but it will rain.” Huh? Rain, no rain?

There no confusion with Steele. I think we’re hoping that his tea leaves were wrong.

  29. jimmy the lock July 28, 2015 3:21 pm

    Buffoman, 😆

Or used duck bones instead of chicken bones.

  30. Warrior Dave July 28, 2015 4:56 pm

I’ll always remember that Phil Steele predicted UH would be undefeated in 2007 and go to the Sugar Bowl, before the season started. Ever since then, he’s been spot on with us.

I too got my season tickets. Don’t remember it ever coming this early. I like this change.

  31. Fei Jai July 28, 2015 6:56 pm

Based on past performance, I say 3 win season because it’s norm leading the way. If a coach other than norm leads the UH this season, then I will revise upward.

  32. PONO July 28, 2015 7:16 pm

    Jimmy,
    Lie Hagi is always right.

  33. haka July 28, 2015 8:06 pm

30 fj, bet you $1000.00 they win more than 3 wins with coach chow leading the warriors. Easy money for you. What do you say?

  34. haka July 28, 2015 8:09 pm

Oh, forgot, winner donates to Na Koa.

  35. Fei Jai July 28, 2015 9:00 pm

Haka. You trying to pretend you get more money than me? One. I not one gambler. Two. See one.

  36. haka July 28, 2015 9:21 pm

FJ, let’s be real. It’s not about gambling or pretentious wealth, but rather Na Koa and the Warriors benefitting from our love of the program. I say more than 3 wins…deal?

  37. haka July 28, 2015 11:09 pm

FJ, okay, my bad. Let’s just cheer for the home team.

  38. Bryson July 28, 2015 11:21 pm

Good News Cam Hayes on his way to Hawai’i Nei…

  39. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2015 7:11 am

FJ….u such a optimist…u upgraded from 1 to 3…dang…next season when coach chow is back…surely you will go to 4 ??

NE way… can we change our bet from big mac to “the long chicken” sandwich at Burger King….that bugga so sarap…n manok is better 4 u then beef ??? what you say..

ME STILL THINK 7 WINS IS ATTAINABLE…42/75….gifffff…em

  40. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2015 7:13 am

oops should add to that… defense…13/26

  41. Inyoface July 29, 2015 7:39 am

    Thought there was new uniforms?

  42. Tempmanoa July 29, 2015 8:36 am

Phil Steele has a remarkable record as a preseason predictor and he still stands up to the computer predictions that are also amazing– his pick of us to go undefeated to the Sugar Bowl is only one of several picks he has made. He has us finishing 5th in our division just ahead of UNLV in last place– just like yesterday’s MWC media poll and like most of the online predictors and magazines. It is a little depressing but if you are not a gambler you can be as optimistic as you want. I think we will improve, but not sure how much in wins and losses.

  43. st. anthony trojan July 29, 2015 9:37 am

Predicting an unbeaten season…is really sumthing huh… give him credit 4 that…

And me is pretty sure his staff has all the ‘dope’ on coaches n players here..
but me just disagree with them… n see us winning 7….if the QB plays all 13 games…
the back end of the schedule is not as tough as the front end…they will survive n thrive on the offensive end…n hope the defensive side can put sum stops when needed…to seal victories…n providing coach…don’t get to much into the offensive side…42/75…13/26….
