2-for-1 day: UH to MWC, Big West

UH officially joints the Mountain West in football and the Big West in non-football sports beginning July 1, 2012.

UH will contribute “cost sharing” — travel subsidies — to visiting team, as well as turn over the football TV rights to the Mountain West and national TV rights for non-football sports to the Big West.

UH will not have to pay an entry fee to either league. It will forfeit its share of WAC money for the 2010-2011 academic year as part of its exit penalty.

Chris Gant, a receiver from Moorpark College in California, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.

Gant said he is 6-1, 185, and capable of running 40 yards in 4.4 seconds.

This past season, he caught 81 passes for 1,134 yards and 17 touchdowns. In two seasons at Moorpark, he has 145 receptions and 33 touchdowns.

He joins the Warriors in July.

He’s the fourth receiver to commit to UH for the 2011 recruiting class. The Warriors might take one more. Rest of the focus is on o-linemen, defensive ends, linebackers, and cornerbacks.

Here’s a Gant audio: Chris Gant.

OK, this is a first. Kortney Kikiloi-Borthwick has selected d1島 as the winner of the WAC championship T-shirt. He’s won it two days in a row.

Al has agreed to donate an autographed picture of Colt Brennan. His contest is to guess the Warriors’ total offensive yards in the Hawaii Bowl. Tie-breaker is Warriors’ total points. One guess per person. You may begin submitting your guess.

a very under the radar guy that we couldn’t pass up.

  3. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:07 am

Indeed, you are the one, Al.

You probably should win a prize for correctly predicting the UH recruits.

  4. al December 10, 2010 12:08 am

who said we had no chance?

no chance at darien bryant…from the sounds of things we are really in his top three. one obstacle…mom and the pacific ocean.

    stay tuned….

  5. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:08 am

I’m surprised Gant was under-recruited. He is expected to be named a California community college All-State player, and, as we’ve said before, if you win that, you’re considered to be a JC All-America player.

  6. al December 10, 2010 12:09 am

it might come down to spruce and bryant in a race for who comes first.

i thought kyle washington was gonna verbal…what do i know.

  7. ai-eee-soos December 10, 2010 12:10 am

    Welcome aboard, Chris Gant.

  8. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:10 am

    Al, you know a lot.

  9. al December 10, 2010 12:10 am

yah, so was i when i read his resume. okay, so is he related to onetime atlanta brave slugger/of, ron gant?

  10. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:11 am

UH was on a roll for a while, with relatives of Donovan McNabb and Rickey Henderson committing. But, no, Chris Gant is not related to Ronnie Gant.

  11. al December 10, 2010 12:11 am

  12. al December 10, 2010 12:12 am

i have a large bird cage.

    full of little birdies.

  13. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:15 am

So, this is a big recruiting weekend — hope the rain stops — and then there’s a dead period until after the bowl games.

The push is to land the mid-year guys; think the focus will be on local guys after that. What’s the distance between Manoa campus and Saint Louis’?

  14. al December 10, 2010 12:17 am

yah the big three at st louis and the big three from kahuku would make it great class. i hear they are talking…a lot.

  15. al December 10, 2010 12:18 am

    about 3 football fields.

  16. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:20 am

I think UH can turn Parker.

  17. al December 10, 2010 12:21 am

i guess moorpark was never considered a powerhouse.

  18. al December 10, 2010 12:23 am

i like the mix of two high schoolers and two jc’ers. all with good size and speed.

now, we need those local kids to take us to that next level.

    and of course…the holy grail.

  19. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:23 am

Didn’t UH get somebody else from Moorpark?

    Coach Bittner sounds familiar.

All of my old recruiting books are still stacked in a boxes in my living room.

  20. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:24 am

I think UH will be OK at receiver next year, especially if Bell moves to slotback.

  21. al December 10, 2010 12:25 am

that is what i am hearing.

we could even catch a falling “star” and put it in our pocket. he the next corey paredes.

and of course there is always room for that future “blindside”.

  22. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 12:29 am

I keep hearing 16 is the number of available scholarships. I think it might be more. Then again, it could be less. Sterling jackson and Darryl McBride need to go on scholie.

ST: So, we have to share our PPV – hope we don’e have to give up too much.

It appears today is the day when UH should receive good news from both the Mountain West Conference and Big West Conference. At least that’s what people tell us.

I know the worry warts are concerned. But in regards to the MWC, UH offers three things:

    • The 13th game for a MWC team playing in Hawaii. That allows a MWC team to add a non-conference opponent to its schedule.

    • Travel subsidies.

    • A share of UH’s pay-per-view. No, pay-per-view won’t go away. But the money that goes to UH might get divvied up.

  35. ai-eee-soos December 10, 2010 1:41 am

Just got back on…spent the last 2 hours sorting through a fraction of the free iPhone apps. With the possibility of the electricity going down again, I only have my phone to get on the internet.

At an annual doctor yesterday, he pulled out his iPhone and spent 20 minutes showing me his neat apps and professional uses. I pull out mine and I had only two besides the stock ones. 😐 Sheesh, I gotta go see a doc to get moving? Well, I tried to peek at Liz’s once… 🙂

    Good night!

    Gratz again to d1!

Welcome to the Land of Warriors, Chris Gant!

We need to get our Skillerz on the same page as soon as possible. I want to see us come out firing from game one next season. Want to see another O-Line surprise, as we did early this year. Go get ’em, Coach Shaw!!! Also want to see our defense continue to hit like they’ve been these past few games, and wrap up and drop everything in sight. Aside from a prolific passing attack, I’d like to see us once again known for a voracious defense.

Go, Warriors! Tulsa’s up next… (okay, after Finals)…

Idaho Statesman has an article about how the MWC directors are meeting today and could invite UH. It sounds like BSU wants the MWC to add UH and stop at 10 football teams since expanding to 12 would reduce the money that all schools get.

  71. Garret December 10, 2010 5:53 am

I’m surprised Gant was under-recruited. He is expected to be named a California community college All-State player, and, as we’ve said before, if you win that, you’re considered to be a JC All-America player.

    ST,

I think that a lot of programs are trying to either limit or completely cut out their recruiting of JC players. That gives an opportunity for UH to scoop high-quality players that may not have other places to go. For example, your article said that Gant had received interest from other schools but you did not mention any other offers…if Gant was a similar-level recruit out of high schools he’d probably have tons of Pac-10 and MWC offers.

Great News about Gant,I feel if it came down to it we would have a schollie for both Bryant and Spruce,I have a feeling though we’ll have a few more under the radar types committ before all is said and done…the real work starts for the coaches when the dead period ends they have some impressive recruits who they may have to fight to keep!!

  95. HawaiiMongoose December 10, 2010 7:23 am

Garret, good to see the Idaho Statesman article, mahalo for the link.

ST, count me in worry wort camp. I’m not doubting the MWC football offer is coming as it makes both financial and competitive sense for the MWC to invite UH. My concern has been that the MWC invitation would be derailed by a last-minute hangup with the Big West invitation. That concern was magnified by the lack of any definitive news about what transpired in Wednesday’s Big West council meeting. Still, I’m happy to see all the rumors that “today is the day” and hopeful that my concern will be proven baseless.

  96. Loa December 10, 2010 7:37 am

Hmmm. I wonder if the heavy rainfall offsets arizona’s dryness.

  99. BG December 10, 2010 8:03 am

    Good Morning Everyone!!!

Warrior recruiting just gets better and better under Coach Mack. That’s a definite area of improvement. Some have voiced concerns that UH hasn’t recruited 4 & 5 star players. I don’t share that concern. Especially local kids who don’t get the exposure like their counterparts on the mainland. Many coaches with local connections know tho’. Just look back at the UH players who have gone on to play in the NFL. Just a few were highly rated out of hs. The same can be said of Boise. Like us, they take prospects and mold them into players.

  100. Derek December 10, 2010 8:16 am

Al, thanks for the highlight reel on Gant. He looks really good. With names like Henderson, Davis, Doe, Gant, and maybe Bryant it sound like “fast” and like a relay team. I have some doubts about Bryant coming over because of his Mom and even if he comes over I wonder if he’ll stick it out for 4 or 5 years. Remember that linebacker from Illinois, Kevin Konrath I don’t think he even last 6 months in Hawaii. Either he couldn’t get comfortable with the culture or he was homesick. If Bryant is worried about homesick, don’t come. He said the travel and the distance is not a problem so that’s a plus. One good thing in our favor is that the last time we got a player from Ohio he was very, very good. Jeff Sydner. Maybe UH coaches should have Sydner talk to Bryant about his experience at Hawaii if that’s allowed. But, I hope UH can land him. Good luck to the coaches.

  101. Souljah December 10, 2010 8:18 am

I say UH puts up 591 total offensive yards and 52 pts against tulsa

Food for thought: Tulsa has played 1 less game than UH, and yet has run exactly 100 more offensive plays than UH so far this season! No-Huddle Crazy! Our defense will be the difference.

    Michigan Warrior’s guess:

    Warriors Total Offensive Yards:520

    Warrior’s Total Points:49

  110. Souljah December 10, 2010 8:34 am

Echoing #107 — hope UH or whoever will stream the High Noon press conference online. Anyone know a link? Glad I brought earbuds to work. 200 minutes to go….

  116. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 8:38 am

Of course, as we always tell UH people, good-news announcements need to be done on Thursdays, not Fridays.

Nobody is going to watch the newscasts tonight. Power outages will be leaving us in the dark again.

    Good morning everyone,

If I may ask, Is this a good day to move home furnishings and appliances from storage to have a garage sale tomorrow?

Somebody help me explain this to my brother! Some comments please.

Great recruit announcements and I can’t wait for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

    Go Warriors….

  119. Street Self Defense December 10, 2010 8:42 am

  126. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 8:55 am

I suppose we could revive the Warrior Beat Show. After all, Leila works at Bachman Hall now.

  127. Pomai December 10, 2010 8:55 am

    Now this is football weather.

  128. Pomai December 10, 2010 8:57 am

My question is that if they televised the news conference for a hand shake why not do the same for a signed, sealed and delivered invite?

  129. cheepono December 10, 2010 8:58 am

mahalo al for your generous donation.

    Warrior’s Total Offensive Yards:549

    Pomai,

My guess is like al said after the handshake press conference it was a done deal. I’m guessing this press conference is to let us know the fine details have been worked out and the agreement has been finalized. Anyway I’m optimistic because ST seems to have an extra hop in his step today.

  140. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 9:09 am

#4 al, on mr. Bryant. Will he be graduating in a few days? Is that high school? Maybe he could enroll for spring ball and get a jump on the other new recruits. His mom just wants him to be happy. He did come to Hawaii on his own (or with his mom) before so he kind of has a feel for Hawaii. Sounds good.

  141. tommui December 10, 2010 9:09 am

GOOD MORNING HAWAII! = well, keep dry in any event.

Saw Coach Trapasso at my eye doctor’s office yesterday.

I only get concerned when umpires show up there with their white canes.

Great recruiting news and am waiting for the announcements at high noon.

AL – waiting to hear more bird songs!

  142. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 9:13 am

Our high noon or their high noon? The suspense is killing me. Maybe the Big West is also waiting for Hawaii’s MWC invite announcement first before saying anything (i hope).

  143. Ballpicker December 10, 2010 9:16 am

    Good to go DPK.

Pomai brought up that it’s good football weather which got me thinking of all pick up games we used to play at palasades rec center in the good ole days and in the rain waz da best. You could make a tackle from ten yards away by sliding into the addah guy. Good fun.

Lookin to pick up a couple of tics for the game so if you got any insider info please send me an email.

  144. tommui December 10, 2010 9:20 am

  148. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 9:33 am

  149. tommui December 10, 2010 9:36 am

  150. al December 10, 2010 9:42 am

ries for contest begins monday, december 20, 2010.

  151. haawarrior December 10, 2010 9:43 am

Ballpicker-I heard that starting today Servco Toyota is giving away tickets if you donate 5 can goods (for 1 ticket) in support of the Hawaii Food Bank. I think there is a limit on how much tic’s you can receive. I think they had 1000 tics to giveaway. I would probally call the nearest Toyota dealer near you first.

  152. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2010 9:43 am

Oh, wait. Did I post the contest too early?

  153. al December 10, 2010 9:45 am

    oops.

entries for contest begins monday, december 20, 2010.

  154. al December 10, 2010 9:46 am

  155. al December 10, 2010 9:47 am

    it’s a done deal!

  156. kawika49 December 10, 2010 9:48 am

So I guess pomai gant use those already received? Dew to premature speculation.

  157. al December 10, 2010 9:52 am

papajoe2…darien bryant has yet to decide. however, he list us in his top 3. he may take one more trip to west virginia.

today’s annoucement will be another positive in our direction.

the biggest hurdle is if his mom let’s him go.

he and his mom did come to “vacation” in hawaii this past summer and he loved it and did an unofficial. he was here this past weekend and it further stamped his approval.

    waiting game ensues.

  158. Derek December 10, 2010 9:53 am

    UH offensive yards: 509

    UH total points: 51

Al, we have one local product who was chosen for the Army All-American Bowl. Would

Juda “Ben Hur” Parker be the holy grail? Or the Messiah?

I am amazed at the size and the athletic ability of QBs these days. In the past, if a QB was 6’6″ they should be pocket passers and wouldn’t or couldn’t run very well. Now, guys like Kaepernick and Newton, both 6’6 are not only good runners, they are great runners and good passers too. Newton also at 250 is a beast. He is much better than Kaepernick, better quickness, better change of direction, better in traffic. Kaepernick runs well on the edges with his gallopiing stride. Newton throws a better ball too. This guy, QB Brock Osweiler at Arizona St. who played the last 2 games and won both is 6’8″ and he’s a decent runner too. Throw well. My point is, wouldn’t it be great if UH can land somebody like that.

And if we get somebody like that, is that the Holy Grail?

  159. Ballpicker December 10, 2010 9:53 am

    HaaWarrior. Thanks for the update.

  160. Ballpicker December 10, 2010 9:54 am

    Oh boy premature posting?

  161. (Jesse)James December 10, 2010 10:03 am

tommui…nope, that was Stretch and A-Joe…

  162. rage777 December 10, 2010 10:09 am

Looking at past results of Tulsa and comparing them to us, my prediction is:

    489 total yards

    38 points

We just have to play them like we played Nevada and we will be fine. From the stats (since I haven’t seen them play) it looks like Kinne is just a bad Kaepernick. We need to watch out for Johnson because he can run and catch the ball. Just put Paredes on him and we will blow them out.

  163. Kazz December 10, 2010 10:12 am

    Al,

    Skeptic is a harsh word…

    I like ST’s “Worry Worts”. 😎

  164. al December 10, 2010 10:14 am

yes, you do in fact deserve all the credit for those annoucements.

i am not out here to grab the attention, just disseminate info that i have picked up.

    mahalo for all you do!

  165. Pomai December 10, 2010 10:15 am

#143 Ballpicker – Yeah those where the days, I can remember making a tackle and both of us sliding about another 20 feet in the mud, good fun, going into the game you weighed 160 lbs. but after you where at least 200 lbs. LOL

  166. al December 10, 2010 10:16 am

and i see another “false al” response has surfaced.

morning and a hopefully dry Aloha Friday to all

nice to hear a decision has been reached and announcements will be positive at noon today. a plus move for the university and athletic dept.

to those in the know or have special birdie insight, with the subsidies and pay per view monies sharing, how will this help UH eliminate some of their budget deficits? other than the travel issues by joining the BWC and MWC what would be a few positive UH would gain to help out in these poor financial times? strictly speaking financial help or gains. would like to see UH get some luv for what they bring to the table.

mahalo and sorry if this is off line

  171. al December 10, 2010 10:20 am

  176. A-House December 10, 2010 10:40 am

    al:

see what you have created? a monster wen you kalled Kazz and me “SKEPTICS”!!!

I will accept skeptic – but i was not a skeptic – merely pointing out, like Yogi Berra, my most favoriate catcher, said, “It’s not over until the fat lady sings”! Perhaps, the 12 noon conference will be the fat lady.

In making plans, current and future, one must consider as many facets as possible and then some to insure success – even then, countless changes must be made to counter act any surprise movement(s) – like what happend to the 100th Bn when an entire company of another battalion deserted there right flank exposing them to German units. How do I know? Cause I worked with 2 vets who were next to the deserting company.

  177. jeezy33 December 10, 2010 10:42 am

thanks al appreciate it. I think st no like me because I’ve argued a few of his articles in the past about hyping people up.

  178. A-House December 10, 2010 10:44 am

    al:

so, 4 out of 5 who visited last Saturday have committed. Bryant is #5.

how would UH use his talent/skills? WR – LB – Slot – DE – or create several TE plays? Most unusual to recruit a TE for a “system” that does not employ a TE.

  179. A-House December 10, 2010 10:44 am

Did ST mention if the live confrence will be broadcast on TV? Will it be K-5?

In my bleary-eyed post at 1:51 am, I should have mentioned I was looking for emergency utilities, but got side-tracked considerably. But one handy app I saw (about 300 variations) uses the led flash of the phone as a flashlight. Being a an ex-boater and Coastie, I liked the ones that would automatically send flashing light SOS. OK you can be in the mountains too, and even if your phone portion is down, you can still signal distress and position. Now, if only the phone could generate orange smoke for daytime. 🙂

Then there’s apps that will send SOS to your Facebook account. Hmmm…what happened to 911? So no matter what smart phone you have, look for handy free apps.

…OK, sorry if I’m behind the PDA and Smartphone curve…

  206. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 11:26 am

#100..mahalo for the reminders about one recruit..

Kevin Konrath..went the jc route, ended up at portland state…2010 stats not that impressive. played in 11 games but hardly any game impact.

Has all the “measureables” and pre-recruitment hype but performance is something else.

5 stars 4 stars are just pre-recruit hype. Granted they are good athletes and look good in hs or jc but d1 football is another game. My preference is the boyz from Hawaii. They come ready and with the right mentality and they represent very well. Sorry if my bias is showing.

    Kazz….NO WORRY!…INNAS!

That said, after all is said and done…does the MWC really look all that great from a conference stand point? It might have been much “better” looking if BYU, TCU and Utah was still in conference. Anyhoo, we move on and focus, build for a MWC Champioship!

Merry Christmas to all of Hawaii Warrior Nation.

Now we can sleep in peace.

But need to work even harder to keep building in these 2 new conferences.

So how much has UH really given up to join the new conferences.

  248. A-House December 10, 2010 12:16 pm

    OK, al:

the fat lady has sung and I am content – now, the work begins to build all sports to a higher level.

BTW, is Amber K back at UH to defend her National Championship? If she does, then the BWC cn claim another National Champion!!!

  249. greenthumb December 10, 2010 12:16 pm

Big West — only 1 team added, us! Oh, and they just clarified, MWC vote was unanimous to invite UH.

  250. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:17 pm

    Great day in Hawaii Nei!!!

  258. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:23 pm

  260. al December 10, 2010 12:25 pm

  263. Warrior Dave December 10, 2010 12:29 pm

    papajoe2

JD said we would be saving approximately $250K on travel with Big West. They did not say what the cost would be for travel subsidaries for both conferences. But they only talking about air travel.

TV revenue still up in the air but as it stands now, it would belong to the conference.

  264. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:30 pm

    lol..really at fingers…

  271. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:34 pm

A few months ago, on this blog, I mentioned that all the people who has power in the state, should get together and figure out all this mess with the conference shake up. I didn’t know who the powers were needed, other than upper campus, the AD, the governor, Senators and House members, travel industries and what not. I did not know of Rickne Freitas (sp), the Vegas connection, and others, but I’m sure happy they got together. We can acheive if we act as a team and pull together. MAHALO TO ALL INVOLVED!!!

  272. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:34 pm

    fat

  273. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:35 pm

  277. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:38 pm

papajoe2…and there also was a lot of anxiety about the unknown future. Lots of suggestions and comments about how the administration was not up to snuff on the issues.

Lots of things we didn’t know going on behind the scene and the players helping UH.

Now we know a little bit more….GOOD JOB MR. DONOVAN AND COMPANY!

Who knows..maybe one day he will be willing to run for governor!…LOL!

  278. madeinhawaii December 10, 2010 12:41 pm

    al,

half is a lot… I’d settle for 1/3.. that would be about 35-40 at any given time. Still a lot of local flavor with a good mix of players from all over for that ‘Out-of-State’ learning experience.

  279. gigi-hawaii December 10, 2010 12:42 pm

Brother O’Donnell was so young when he died. He attended my mother’s 80th birthday party. She is 94 now.

  280. koakane ip4 December 10, 2010 12:43 pm

adding my congrats to the UH on upgrading it’s programs.

kudos to the leadership team for bringing this about. good job and yes a very Mele Kalikimaka it will be.

  281. d1島 December 10, 2010 12:43 pm

It ain’t when ya go, it’s what ya did!

  282. gigi-hawaii December 10, 2010 12:44 pm

Congrats to the UH administrators who engineered the move to the MWC and the Big West. I still find it unbelievable!

  283. d1島 December 10, 2010 12:44 pm

    More errands!

  284. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:44 pm

“MWC members are Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming….

Don’t it look like Boise, Fresno, Nevada, Hawaii will be helping the MWC more that they will be helping the 4 teams?…just asking…

  285. Cheyah! December 10, 2010 12:46 pm

Keep your Eye on the prize Warriors!

  286. NorthShoreFan December 10, 2010 12:48 pm

  287. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:49 pm

Yeah, now us can sleep moa gooder. But work no stay pau yet. Gotta make the deal pa’a.

  288. tommui December 10, 2010 12:50 pm

    KOAKANE and others #170

I don’t know what it will cost UH to join MWC and BWC. I hope it will not be substantial and I do hope that the savings will off-set the out-go.

I look upon the joining of the two conferences as: do you worry about the cost of getting a liferaft when the ship (WAC) is sinking?

  289. al December 10, 2010 12:51 pm

tommui…the bwc and the mwc waived the entrance fees.

  290. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:52 pm

tommui, I heard that there was no entrance fees. I hope that it is true.

  291. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 12:52 pm

    al, too good.

  292. al December 10, 2010 12:53 pm

nsf…miah will practice in spots when it does not conflict with football. he won’t play until the hawaii bowl is done.

it could take him awhile to get his “sealegs” back, handles, game speed, shot, etc.

  293. kruzen December 10, 2010 12:54 pm

I hope the WAC survives for the sake of the football members. Especially, Utah State since they honored the agreement regarding BYU.

It looks like the MWC will stay at 10 teams. I think the MWC should only invite teams that will help with the AQ status or bring financial worth to the conference.

Thanks to the Warriors football coaches and players for a great regular season which I think probably helped a great deal in the MWC invite.

  294. HawaiiMongoose December 10, 2010 12:54 pm

OUTSTANDING! No more worries about UH having a suitable home for its hardworking and deserving student-athletes and coaches.

Congratulations to the “leadership team”, especially Jim Donovan, for a job well done.

Now back to talking about football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and all that other fun stuff!

  295. WOW ! December 10, 2010 12:57 pm

The WAC responds with a 50% off sale of all Boise State,Hawai`i,Fresno State and Nevada sporting gear at their on-line store

  296. Slugger December 10, 2010 1:05 pm

I have some blue Koa Anuenue Aloha shirts with “Western Athletic Conference” embroidered on the left sleeve. Mostly Medium & a couple of Small sizes. Available for a small donation to the UH Wahine Softball Booster Club. Now a collector’s item… 🙂

  297. Okole Maluna December 10, 2010 1:05 pm

I remember seeing Rockne Freitas as a working student help and had to go into his offce to drop a mail at UH way back when.

And seeing him in one of the office in Bachman Hall, He looked very soaring and very refine gentleman.

I can still picture him till this day.

Pomai: HK’s on Coolidge Street still has their signature fried Saimin with choice of (BBQ Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Teri Beef, Teri Pork or Luncheon Meat) and comes with extra liquid sauce for Saimen to keep it moist when you’re ready to eat.

  298. mctruck December 10, 2010 1:08 pm

Am glad…..no,no,…..super-happy, everything came together!!!!, contrary to what the blog host was saying…..I was not worried at all,(worry-wart), bout the long awaited announcement. (did I mention that word on the street is that the BIGEAST has their sights on inviting UH in all sports?)……bwaaaaahahaha!!

  299. Stretch December 10, 2010 1:09 pm

BYU must be a little worried right now. They go independent with an agreement to play WAC schools to fill out their schedule. I am sure they didn’t expect only San Jose St, New Mexico St, Idaho, Utah St and Louisiana Tech to choose from.

  300. Okole Maluna December 10, 2010 1:11 pm

I see Rivals.com has WAC Coach of the Year:

“Greg McMackin, who guided the Warriors to a surprising 10-3 regular-season record and a portion of the league title along with Boise and Nevada. Hawaii was expected to finish in the middle of the WAC pack but instead shared the conference title.”

  301. koakane ip4 December 10, 2010 1:13 pm

tommui I rejoice with everyone on UH upgrading itself and definitely agree needed to leave WAC. just wondering out loud what UH gets that will improve it’s financial outlook. doesn’t have to be now or even two years from now. looking at the future.

no matter Warrios and Wahines will battle, represent and win their share of titles. Imua UH

  302. Okole Maluna December 10, 2010 1:15 pm

Rivals.com also has both: All WAC 1st Team Offense

    WR Kealoha Pilares, Hawaii

Particulars: 5-11/205, Sr.; Wahiawa (Hawaii) Damien Memorial

    WR Greg Salas, Hawaii

Particulars: 6-2/210, Sr.; Chino (Calif.) High

  303. Bluehorse December 10, 2010 1:15 pm

Aloha, fellow WAC/MWC brothers. Boise State was rooting for Hawaii all along. As for joining a weaken conference, yes, with TCU, BYU and Utah gone, but consider that there is #11 BSU, Fresno State, #17 Nevada and you, #24 Warrior Clan, the MWC is once again strong, but now it is OUR conference, not BYU or TCU’s. And any way you cut it, the bottom of the MWC with Air Force who wss in the top 25 this year, and a much improved San Diego State who reached the top 30, it is much better than our WAC companions who will need to improve. And while New Mexico and UNLV are not football powers, they have basketball teams perennially in the top 25.

Now if you will excuse me, its party time here, to celebrate a OUR new conference and the continuing comrade and rivalries. Mahalo.

  304. Kazz December 10, 2010 1:21 pm

Believe it or not, I cannot celebrate completely…

As it was on November 18th, I still shiver wondering the fates of NMSU, SJSU, LaTech, Idaho, and USU.

What we’ve just accomplished is NO WHERE NEAR what Fresno State and Nevada did. They left the WAC to die when we all tried to save it and we could have back then prior to August 18th.

AFTER August 18th I think many of us agreed that if any other WAC teams leave, we wouldn’t blame them for doing so because on August 18th at 4:05PM HST it was THUNDERDOME!!!

Now, those programs are experiencing what we all felt on August 18th all over again. They have been familiar foes but they deserve a chance to continue on in college athletics and my heart and best wishes go out to the student-athletes, their coaches, parents, friends, training staff, administrative staff, and ANYONE involved with those programs.

My God… what has happened to college athletics? 🙁

  305. Da Punchbowl Kid December 10, 2010 1:23 pm

    Yeee Haw!

Wonderful news all the way around!

A big mahalo to our awesome leadership team! You folks know who you are!

And congrats to ALL the Teams players and coaches for doing so well and making us so desirable as conference mambers!

Thanks to everyone at UH Manoa for fighting to usher in a fantastic new era in UH Athletics!

  306. Kazz December 10, 2010 1:23 pm

    BlueHorse,

    Mahalo to you sir/ma’am!

    See you soon!

  307. Kazz December 10, 2010 1:24 pm

No can make “a” now. UH football must continue to win and succeed when we’re not expected.

We wanted in and now we’re in. Let’s show Mr. Thompson we are worth it!!!!!

  308. mokumanu December 10, 2010 1:24 pm

Beat Tulsa. Show the new conference.

  309. kev-1 December 10, 2010 1:25 pm

anyone know what happens with the men’s volleyball team? thought I’d ask, since some people on this blog think I’m “volleyball stupid.”

  310. Da Punchbowl Kid December 10, 2010 1:26 pm

Any troll who’s hasselling koakane gotta be lolo. Braddah koakane is one of the nicest people you could ever know.

  312. pcwarrior December 10, 2010 1:26 pm

With winning comes upgrades!!! We’re winning this year and we’ve upgraded in conferences. We win Christmas Eve and we keep ugrading in recruits. We keep winning next year, we upgrade facilities…………

Coach Mac and staff needs to be around to continue the winning tradition that started in 2006 til now.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON AND JOB WELL DONE UH LEADERSHIP TEAM!!!

    WAY TO GO WARRIORS!!!!!

  313. mctruck December 10, 2010 1:27 pm

Kazz, agree with your thoughts, 100%.

BlueHorse…thanks for your words of solidarity towards the Warrior program and our inclussion in the new MWC.

    Announcement on ESPN:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5907111

  315. Stretch December 10, 2010 1:31 pm

kev-1 – for right now, the men’s volleyball team stays in the MPSF since UH is the only team invited. Right now, the BW does not have enough to create a conference. If I was Charlie Wade, I would NOT want the BW to start it’s own conference. MPSF is the elite conference for men’s volleyball.

  316. Committed Road Warrior December 10, 2010 1:33 pm

With UH football playing a MWC schedule beginning in 2012, I guess us road warriors are going to become familiar with the Denver International Airport (and Denver in general) rather quickly, as it’s within driving distance to THREE MWC schools…..Air Force (Colorado Springs, 90min. drive), Colorado State (Ft. Collins, 90min. drive), and Wyoming (Laramie, 2 1/2 hour drive).

  317. Old Diver December 10, 2010 1:34 pm

SJSU, NMSU, Idaho and Utah St are in a bad situation but LaTech should try for CUSA. But in either case I think the WAC is dead.

  319. Not an Expert December 10, 2010 1:36 pm

All other sport coaches of UH seems to be excited about going to the Big West. Coach Gib only one seems a little subdued by the statement he made. Nothing negative, just that UH has not had a history for playing basketball with most of the BW schools. As most stated it will help to ease the stress of traveling and help recruiting the hotbeds of Cali.

  324. Bluehorse December 10, 2010 1:47 pm

Utah State may end up in the MWC yet. The MWC is in no rush and has until June 30, 2011 to add anyone to join for the 2012 conference as no one can move until then anyway. I think the Hawaii invite was planned when BSU, and again when Nevada and Fresno were, but travel considerations by the conference prevailed. But I think when your school considered independence and placing your other sports in the Big West, the MWC obviously rethought its expansion and ask Hawaii to join now, not later. As for the WAC disolving, Benson still has a few tricks up his sleeve.

There are still other schools the WAC could consider: some Big Sky and Sunbelt teams, or alliances. And what about teams such as Cal Poly, Southern Utah, North Dakota State? Our WAC brothers, such as SJSU and NMS they need to improve and get better and not keep accepting the status quo.

  325. rage777 December 10, 2010 1:50 pm

Sometimes it is nice to be wanted:

That it’s a name-boost for the Big West and Long beach State, also unquestionable, with the name recognition (and money) that a football school brings; not to mention the potential recruiting boon of guaranteeing a few trips to Hawai’i.

Dr. Michael Drake, Chancellor, University of California, Irvine and Chair of the Big West Board of Directors made the announcement. “We are excited and pleased with the addition of Hawai’i to the Big West Conference. In assessing Hawai’i, the Board carefully considered and was impressed by both its legacy of athletic success and its commitment to academic excellence.”

  340. Derek December 10, 2010 2:11 pm

Inspite of the bad weather, it is a great day for the University of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii. Kudos to all who have made this day possible. As a diehard UH fan, the coaches can now continue on their journey to recruit the best possible athletes for their programs. As a fan, I believe we can be thinking about regular conference championships and even National Championships. Women’s and men’s volleyball and softball are within reach and can compete for NCAA championships. Men’s and Women’s basketball will get better, let’s be patient and we can look forward to making it to the Big Dance in the near future. Our football team’s objective is to try to get to another BCS game and win it. It has been possible in the past to get there, and Hawaii fans long for the day it will happen again. Whatever, we should enjoy the journey.

The most unbelievable thing I saw today. On ESPN2, Sports Nation a dalmation rode a tricycle down the street, actually pedalling it with his hind legs, sitting on the seat and holding the 2 front legs steering the tricycle. Now, if you can believe that, anything is possible, anything.

  341. al December 10, 2010 2:12 pm

  357. Stretch December 10, 2010 2:30 pm

A-House – i’ve been singing looooong time, already!

  359. Derek December 10, 2010 2:32 pm

Looking ahead, when we join the MWC, basically the former WAC we will begin playing more teams that are in high altitude (Air Force, Colorado St., and Wyoming). Coach Mack should be well versed on handling situations based on his experience. It doesn’t hurt to lean on former UH coach Dick Tomey who took the Warriors on the road after joining the WAC and beat some of them up there. One of these days, we will beat Boise St. at Boise. When we join the MWC in 2012, Kellen Moore will be gone and maybe by then we will have our Holy Grail!!!!

  362. Stretch December 10, 2010 2:41 pm

  363. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 2:50 pm

Air Force, Colorado State and Wyoming in altitude? Altitude no matter if we got the attitude.

  364. d1島 December 10, 2010 2:51 pm

  366. papajoe2 December 10, 2010 3:01 pm

d1, Do we still have an exit penalty? I don’t think so because we are giving them plenty of notice. I hope we don’t forget to give the WAC an official “we are leaving you in 2012” notice. I think the only penalty is if we are not around for 2012 and beyond, we will not collect anything when the WAC passes out the money.

  379. madeinhawaii December 10, 2010 4:11 pm

Nice to know we have a conference to call home from 2012 and onward.. but it still feels like the WAC. I mean… There’s Boise.. and Nevada, Fresno and UNLV…. The biggest difference I think is that we get a Military Academy and we no longer have to go past New Mexico. But the big dogs are still that same with BYU, UTAH and TCU on their way out.

Maybe BYU will consider rejoining the MWC when the existing TV contract is up for renegotiation/bid. Until then, it may be best to keep the MWC at 10 teams and try to secure an AQ standing.

  380. BleedGreen808 December 10, 2010 4:11 pm

    Per Mr. Tsai

Sounds like a lot of $$.. especially for smaller team sports.

  393. madeinhawaii December 10, 2010 4:50 pm

$150,000 to $175,000 per trip, is fair, I suppose for football teams and whatever supporting staff they bring to Hawaii. Is that the going rate for a charger flight to Hawaii and back out of LAX?

    ooops again.. charger = charter

  395. WOW ! December 10, 2010 4:56 pm

In the case of the Big West their conference web site has all that one needs to know to get familiar with the Big West.

Someone brought up Championship Tournaments.Presently they have a Championship Tournament in the following sports.

Basketball ( Both Men and Women )

    Cross Country

    Golf

    Soccer

    Tennis

    Track and Field

and two other sports that won’t apply to UH ( Men’s Soccer and Women’s Water Polo.)

  396. Ralph December 10, 2010 4:57 pm

  399. NYUH December 10, 2010 5:08 pm

Wow, I’m impressed with UH negotiating team that made the most out of a very bad situation. Granted they were helped nicely by a team of young Warriors that went 10-3 and they need to step it up financially to build a football program that can compete with their new..err old adversaries. But you got to give them this win and trust they will follow up.

A big question will be the TV contract. Looking forward to the future analysis of the CBScollegesports network.

I’m glad that the powers that be didn’t get hung up on all-or-nothing and looked at the BWC for non-football and everywhere else for football.

This may not be the “ideal” situation.. but it’s the best option for us right now and it gives our football program the boost it needs to complete this year’s recruiting campaign. And so far, I’m liking the guys we have gotten verbals from.

  426. A-House December 10, 2010 6:46 pm

In the news confernce, Coach Mack said that moving to the MWC has had an immediate impact on recruiting.

Is he referring to those who have already committed or new commitments from players as word spread about the movement?

Actually I like the fact she wears it – people can spot her a mile away. That she is at the various events – almost as a administrative cheerleader which I think is good!

  443. d1島 December 10, 2010 8:34 pm

Brutal reality of big-time CFB is the “what have you done for me lately” evaluations that go on after every season.

13 years with Mack Brown came to an abrupt end for 2005 Broyles Award winner (as the nation’s top Assistant) Greg Davis when he was forced to resign his Texas OC job.

Basically, Brown caved into fan and alumni pressure and fired three coaches who served him well for years. They became scapegoats after Brown experienced his first losing season since 1989, when UT went 5-7 overall this season, including 2-5 at home and a last-place finish in the Big 12’s South Division.

Texas insiders predict Brown isn’t finished with his housecleaning. More coaching caps could roll when Brown returns from the National Football Foundation festivities this week in New York City.

When the Longhorns’ once-promising 2010 season started going deep south, Brown took a familiar approach to explain what went wrong. He threw his assistants and players under the bus, while defending himself after an embarrassing 28-21 home loss to Iowa State.

  452. al December 10, 2010 9:05 pm

    what a day!

the future of the university of hawaii athletics was saved in one glorious announcement. many don’t realize how this double marriage kept us from falling in to the black hole. there is hope and now a future.

  453. al December 10, 2010 9:14 pm

what the bwc/mwc means to us?

we won’t be left out when the wac collapses.

attendance for all sports will show a decided increase.

–football will increase by 20% in 2012 over this year’s pathetic numbers.

–basketball will also increase partly to the new gib arnold era (the old wac was tough)..

–wvb will be hitting 7-8k consistently again

    – baseball will continue to see 2k per night

    what does this mean?

mo money. ticket sales, concessions, rainbowtique, air travel, tv coverage, etc.

yah, it affects so many jobs. not jsut that of the coaches and staff. but, everything that trickles down. sportscasters and beat writer will be happy it saves their livelihood.

    etc, etc, etc.

    …nuff said.

ahouse…i guess we all knew that we’d be playing byu next year. the acgual date was not important as it stood in shadows of the fate of our athletic programs.

again, if i may reiterate. this is the hugest thing could have happened to the university of hawaii in it’s 100+ years. hugest. monumental.

Dang!… looks like Steele Jantz led City College of San Francisco (Rolo’s alma matter) to an undefeated season and will be playing in the CCCAA championship game..

Through 10 games this season, Jantz ranked third in total offensive yards per game (327.3) among all players in the CCCAA, while leading the CCSF Rams through an undefeated run to the NorCal Conference championship. On Nov. 27, Jantz rushed for four touchdowns and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass, in leading the Rams to a 52-15 rout of Fresno City College in the Northern California Football Association championship game.

As he and the Rams (11-0) head into Saturday’s 1 p.m. CCCAA championship against Mt. San Antonio College (12-0), Jantz has thrown for 2,851 yards and 23 touchdowns — against eight interceptions — while also rushing for 631 yards and 14 more scores.

    Great read on Steel Jantz

In fact, the perseverance Jantz has shown throughout his climb back from such adversity should serve as inspiration to all high school seniors — or athletes at any level, for that matter — that despite suffering through the devastation of a season-ending injury, with the right attitude you can still work to play another day.

Not trying to put a wet towel on the MWC invite.. but I have to wonder

What if we had this “Leadership Committee” in place a year ago when the conferences first started to shift along the various fault lines. Could they have negotiated a place in the PAC10 in lieu of Colorado or Utah? As it stands, unless the PAC10 now “PAC12” decides to grow to 16, or the BCS as it stands is dismantled, Hawaii has no chance of getting into that upper echelon of FBS programs.

  502. madeinhawaii December 11, 2010 9:07 am

    tommui,

Last few minutes? The blog has been out of commission for the last 9 hours! ..

  503. tommui December 11, 2010 9:10 am

While I think that we should not worry (too) much about the cost of a liferaft considering that the WAC ship was sinking, assuming 6 football teams travel expense is $900,000, how much does Hawaii save by not traveling to LaTech (all teams – football, baseball, etc)?

While we may lose around $3mil from PPV and TV rights, how much would be get from the MWC and BWC for TV?

If the MWC is an AQ, what is the estimate of the moneys received from that?

    Just curious.

Maybe GARRET has a better handle on that.

    Tommui,

I dunno… but even if we don’t profit a penny more over the first few years with the MWC than we did in the WAC, at least we will be in much more stable conferences. We should be able to recruit a slightly better caliber of athletes for all but our Men’s BB team (need to make sure Coach Gib has the recruiting $$ and support he needs to win the BWC regularly). Better athletes = better performance = greater awareness for our programs = more $$ as the number of fans to the revenue producing sports starts to increase for the home games.

Ultimately, I think the Athletic Department is banking on student fees, increased ticket and concession (Stan Sheriff and Murakami) sales to balance the budget.

MIH – the MWC can get AQ status soon. The key is that we win the WAC next year, then keep winning in the MWC. If the top teams in the MWC continue to end the season in the top 25 that will make the difference.

Until another BCS conference comes calling to poach the MWC.

I think the lesson to be learned is that we look out for ourselves so that WE are the next to be poached.

  553. homeowners insurance quote December 18, 2010 11:09 am

Ok. Starchy foods are things like your rice. By non dairy I would think it would mean some kind of protein, such as fish, poulty, red meats, and obviously your fruits are items such as apples and stuff. Umm lunch i would say that mean 3 servings of starches (1/2 cup servings of rice?) vegetable servings of different types like carrots, corn, celery things like that and your fruit is the same. I’m not totally familiar with this particular diet (It’s the first I’ve heard of it) but I hope this helps. Either that or take it to google search. The reason behind no salt is because salt causes the body to store water, which leads to weight gain. I would say drink about 2 Litres of water per day. Hope it starts to make sence now.

Zune and iPod: Most people today compare the Zune on the Touch, but just after seeing how slim and surpr isingly small and gentle it is, I look at it to become a somewhat one of a kind hybrid that combines qualities of the two the Touch as well as the Nano. It truly is really colorful and lovely OLED display screen is slightly smaller than the touch display, however the player itself feels very a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as significantly, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, even though getting just a hair thicker.

I am sorry, AOL does not resinate with me as an identity what so ever. What are they making an attempt to get throughout? What will be the new audience they’re hoping to create? After you evaluate it, what do you’re feeling?I see a hell of a great deal of unplugged ethernet cables puking throughout my monitor.I imagine you meant to make use of the identical description for the two the 8 worst as well as quantity one new identity

We don’t get involved too much in link baiting, but free tools are out there to help you pull links organically. Takes some research to dig through all the trash offers or you could put money into developing your own. We prefer to use web-based form tactics – people just feel more comfortable submitting a form so they don’t have to subscribe to anything. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

Count me as a further particular person surpr ised that you just did notinclude pepsi on the ??worst??? l ist and even acknowledge their redesign.Other distinct comments. The brand new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace around the wordmark is uneven. I just like the idea, but the execution is poor. The previous one is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like far better in regards to the new Guitar Hero logo. The unfavorable room between the letters would make it virtually unattainable to read for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it in any respect. The line breaks seem absolutely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the phrase pollywogs??? on two lines, having a hyphen?- ugh).Last but not least, I’d love to view your l ist of Identities which have been in desperate need of a redesign. My #1 choose will be Verizon.

  908. ugg boots and tights January 1, 2011 2:35 am

Fascinating. No Pepsi or Wal-Mart? Bear in mind the uproar of individuals two re-brands? Surpr ised to find out they did notmake the ??Worst??? l ist, glad to view that Kraft built it tho.

  909. ugg cardy boots 8 January 1, 2011 2:42 am

Effectively, you??? ve convinced me?- that graphic style is pseudo-science rulled by whims. The very best selections are virtually ind istingu ishable fromthe Worst, plus the rationales are pathetic, and punctured just as conveniently by other snide, arbitrary criteria.

Plus the entire Tropicana debacle was left off why? Speaking of Tropicana, does the brand new Aol logo remind anybody of the rejected Troipcana logo? Personally, I am not a fan of the Aol rebrand. Although the execution and implementation are exceptional, the precise wordmark is dull, uninspired, and just kind of blah. That getting mentioned, I concur with most of the other rankings. I am even now in love using the metropolis of Melbourne is new id.

Sautee up 1 carrot, 1 celery, 1 onion with salt and pepper. Then add 2 quarts of chicken stock. I like to add a sprig of thyme and a bay leaf but most stock already has this in it. Let this simmer for about 10 minutes. Then bring it to a boil. Add about 1 handful of egg noodles and cooked chicken. I generally use leftover roasted or bake up a breast. Taste for seasoning. I generally use a little more salt and pepper at this point.
