Warriors hire Lempa, 3 coaches

The Warriors have hired Kevin Lempa as defensive coordinator, according to sources.

Also:

> Norfolk State assistant Kefense Hynson has been named receivers coach.

> Sean Duggan, a Boston College defensive assistant, will coach the UH linebackers.

> Jason Cvercko, who was Nevada’s coordinator of recruiting operations, will be UH’s recruiting coordinator, a non-coaching position.

  2. cheepono December 31, 2015 8:47 am

nice! relieved to hear about lempa. need his experience to guide the d.

  3. Legistlature December 31, 2015 8:48 am

Now the coaching hires are behind us…we beg for more player recruting news
we want it all one time…hehe! WARRIOR ON PRIDE NOT

  4. cheepono December 31, 2015 8:51 am

kefense is an interesting hire. hopefully he has experience working on the psyche of wr’s. we went super young with duggan. from player to ga to assistant coach of a div1 school in 1 year. sounds eerily familiar to wynn and matthews. hope he turns out better than those!

  5. Warrior Dave December 31, 2015 8:53 am

With staffing complete, onward and upward for this team. Let the rebuilding begin now that we have a foundation.

  6. ponojr December 31, 2015 8:54 am

    #4

If he can coach at Yale, I’m sure he has the smarts to get to our WR’s. I would be straight up with the WR’s – Catch the ball and play, drop the ball and stand on the sidelines.

  7. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2015 9:00 am

Lempa also will coach the safeties.
Jake Cookus, who was going to work with the safeties, now will coach tight ends and continue to coordinate special teams.

  8. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2015 9:02 am

Hynson’s impressive resume and interview gave him a very, very slight edge over Craig Stutzmann and Ashley Lelie.

  9. tom December 31, 2015 9:06 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Nwq xoaches (other than Coach Lempa) ver-r-r-y interesting!

  10. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:07 am

Hope that Duggan can recruit effectively……..with such limited coaching experience……and probably equally limited recruiting connections.
    http://www.bceagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=92&path=football

  11. Buffoman December 31, 2015 9:07 am

Very interesting, regarding the selection of Hynson. Let’s see how all of this plays out. As always, being positive about our team.

  12. cheepono December 31, 2015 9:09 am

rolo was faced with the tough ceo type decision early on with the wr coaching vacancy. very pleased he went with what he thought was best for the program as opposed to just hiring a friend. nothing against lelie and stutz1 bc those guys are legends in my book, but if rolo thinks someone is better qualified to get us going, I back that 100%.

  13. cheepono December 31, 2015 9:10 am

so are there any ripple effects to be felt from clune going osu?

  14. Kaimiloa December 31, 2015 9:11 am

I figure that Lempa knows Duggan well and saw something special in him. It’s not the same as if a random GA was hired.

  15. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:12 am

    ST,

Other than having played LB for Boston College and been coached by and with Lempa, what other attributes gave Duggan the edge over the other LB candidates (including Gouveia)?

  16. cheepono December 31, 2015 9:17 am

props to thayer evans for being so on top of coaching hires on a national level but that guy has gotta give credit where it’s due. he beat ST to the punch about zak hill but ST was the one to break the news regarding all these new hires first. deserves credit.

  17. letsgowarriors December 31, 2015 9:17 am

will we target east coast recruits having Lempa and Duggan on staff?

  18. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:17 am

    #14,

Those are the same reasons that Chow gave when he hired (then fired) former Utah GA Phil Rauscher…..then former UH GA Jordan Wynn.

  19. Legistlature December 31, 2015 9:23 am

One last plea to end the year.. to the WARRIOR MEN….use the talent you have at your disposal and lead/teach/encourage and if necessary to move positions for the betterment of the team.
    current position new position
    Dakota Torres TE OLB
    Davasyia Hagger TE DE
    Asotui Eli OL DT
    Dayton Furuta LB FB
EYES THAT SEE THE FIELD OF PLAY..AND NOSE FOR THE BALL

  20. Arcumfortis December 31, 2015 9:23 am

14, 18……guess I wonder if $ came into the LB coach decision. There is only so much we have to spend. Maybe you have to take a chance on a young and hungry coach who doesn’t have much pricing power rather than an experienced guy who is accustomed to a higher salary. But the LB coach hire does make me a little nervous.

  21. bowwar December 31, 2015 9:25 am

Did I miss something? Who will be the Defensive Line coach? The recruiting coordinator position is critical, as that person needs to come up with results quickly. I hope he’s like Sun God and able to recruit using social media and the Internet…

  22. letsgowarriors December 31, 2015 9:26 am

    so

    HC – Rolo
    OC – Hill
    OL – Naeole
    RB – Smith
    WR – Hynson
    TE/ST – Cookus

    DC/Safeties – Lempa
    DL – Suiaunoa
    LB – Duggan
    DB – Elimimian

  23. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:26 am

Need strong recruiting for LBs…….especially for this 2016 Signing Class…….since losing 4 top LBs……3 ILBs (Gener, Fonua, Poti)…..and 1 OLB (Williams).

  24. letsgowarriors December 31, 2015 9:27 am

Tui Eli should definitely stay at OL. Moananu on the other hand, i can see us moving him to where ever he is needed most.

  25. Bryson December 31, 2015 9:29 am

At one point Jeff Ulbrich was just a linebacker,Ken Norton Jr was just a linebacker hiring coaches is just like recruiting you do the best you can to evaluate what they bring to the table but you never know how things will turn out until the lights go on and it’s showtime…One huge thing to keep in mind when talking about these hires is the budget Rolo was given to fill his staff

  26. hilorain December 31, 2015 9:31 am

Seems to me some of the hires were based on $$ or lack of $$. Until we really fund the football program, UH head coaches will have to hire assistants on the cheap.

  27. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 9:31 am

    Keep Dakota Torres at TE.
He was the best receiving TE last season.

  28. Na Alii Pride December 31, 2015 9:31 am

Gee Kapakahi, kind of negative today, eh? Let’s wait and see how it works out.

  29. hilorain December 31, 2015 9:40 am

Interesting that three offensive asst. coaches were OC’s at some point in their careers. Would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when they have meetings.

  30. cheepono December 31, 2015 9:41 am

I share kapakahi’s same concerns. not negative at all especially after the dumpster fire we just went through the last 4 years. rolo filled out all but one of the defensive assistant coaching positions prior to the coordinator job. guaranz with the last def assistant coaching spot he let lempa choose one of his own guys. we gotta wait and see if duggan is legit or not. I have faith that rolo will ultimately do what’s in the best interest of the program and not just reward guys he knows for being his friends.

  31. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:41 am

    #27,

Not being negative……just posing concerns that hopefully won’t materialize.

  32. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 9:43 am

Sean Duggan should award the top LB a 2X4 for game day entrances. Hooooooo!!!

  33. Rodney December 31, 2015 9:44 am

#25 Right on the money!!!!!!!I wanted to be impressed…
    But Im not… OMG coaching
    hires Arrgh !!
Rolo should of saved money and been OC. Then coulda hired a really good Defense staff.

  34. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2015 9:44 am

I think Victor Santa Cruz was a finalist for the DC job. But he runs a flex defense that few in college football know. It probably did not match UH’s current personnel.

  35. Kaimiloa December 31, 2015 9:46 am

25 Hilorain… Punatic here. Agree about the $$ . I’m sure people will question why some better qualified coaches weren’t hired but I think we just couldn’t afford them.

  36. Legistlature December 31, 2015 9:48 am

TORRES, Dakota 3rec 28yds vs FRESNO
TORRES, Dakota 1rec 15yds vs Air Force
TORRES, Dakota 2rec 25yds vs Nevada
TORRES, Dakota 1rec 4yds vs New Mexico
TORRES, Dakota 4rec 26yds vs San Diego St
No stats for the other games

  37. Rodney December 31, 2015 9:49 am

Hope is that the coaches are great at the recruiting game.
    Now lets recruit,recruit and recruit.
    Go warriors!!!

  38. kapakahi December 31, 2015 9:49 am

Will be interesting to see if Lempa goes back to a 4-3 base front alignment (that UH used when he was the DC before)…..instead of 3-4 base front alignment that was employed that past 2 seasons under Clune & Mason.

If 4-3 base alignment, gotta figure that some current OLBs (Castro, Kema-Kaleiwahea, Tavai) will end up moving to DE……leaving the JGW, Williams, Mageo, Matautia as the top returning LB candidates to fill the 3 LB positions.

  39. Legistlature December 31, 2015 9:51 am

D Torres can produce more on D for the TEAM…on O he won’t be the X factor

  40. letsgowarriors December 31, 2015 9:52 am

    #37, id prefer a 4-3 or at least more of a 4-3, with a 4-2-5 nickel D.

need someone to emerge as a passrusher

  41. Maddog50 December 31, 2015 9:52 am

I like all the hires and trust Coach Rolovichs instinct assessment-Go Warriors!!!!

  42. kapakahi December 31, 2015 10:01 am

With their hires to UH being announced concurrently, stands to reason that……Duggan was probably part of the package deal to bring Lempa on as DC.

With Lempa also coaching the safeties, also makes sense that he’s also familiar with Abe…..having been coached him as well.

  43. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 10:02 am

Former Kahuku Oline Anthony Siilata was a Soph at Snow this past season.
He was originally set for Oregon St before going on a mission.
Wonder if Naeole is looking at this former Red Raider

    http://www.snowbadgers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1289&path=football

  44. turfwar December 31, 2015 10:03 am

Duggan is probably crucial to getting Lempa. Lempa’s work ethic is relentless and he will expect the same kind of devotion from the rest of the defensive staff. Something that may have led him to leave the first time.

  45. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 10:04 am

    Siilata can also play DT

  46. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 10:05 am

BTW, nothing beats reading football talk

  47. BigWave96744 December 31, 2015 10:09 am

    #38, move Unga to DE.
Rolo used the TE at Nevada, so we still need one.

  48. Legistlature December 31, 2015 10:10 am

    Especially production on the field

  49. kapakahi December 31, 2015 10:13 am

Si’ilata would likely see more playing time if willing to play DL instead of OL.

  50. Legistlature December 31, 2015 10:19 am

Unga needs to pack on the pounds..at 290 with keeping his quickness he would be a force at DT. He got blown off the ball and pushed all the way to the sidelines at a home game by the opposing team OT. It was funny. Won’t be funny if he packs the pounds and become another I. S. former UH & 49ERS standout

  51. Waikapu December 31, 2015 10:22 am

Look I’ll say it. I never heard of these dudes except for Lempa. I’d of picked Lelie or Stutz or any guys with Hawaii ties for recruiting purposes. But as JJ used to say, “Guess what?”
I ain’t da coach and Rolo is, so whoever he think is best I back him up. I’m tired of hating on UH because of creeps like Chow and Gib Da Fib, Son of Satan. We got character guys now in Eran and Nick and we gotta get behind them. Go Bows!

  52. z December 31, 2015 10:22 am

Of the coaches only know Lempa. Good to know he will also be coaching safeties. Not to sure about the lb coach.

  53. ML Warrior December 31, 2015 10:25 am

Any idea who will be in at the Strength & Conditioning staff?

  54. Legistlature December 31, 2015 10:27 am

Allllll Aboard! this coaching ship is sailing out of the pacific to RECRUIT,RECRUIT

  55. cheepono December 31, 2015 10:28 am

coaches only got 2 more weeks before dead period ends. wishing them the best of luck on this 2016 recruiting class.

sidenote: loving the effort of abe elimmimian. report that cedrick dozier is graduating early and transferring from cal was nationally reported maybe an hr ago and within that time he’s already following the young man on twitter.

  56. turfwar December 31, 2015 10:28 am

You think Unga can become another Issac Sapoanga? If packing on pounds could get people to play like Sapoanga then … ahh never mind.

  57. WWF December 31, 2015 10:29 am

The best thing that I like about the WR coach hire, is that he was Director of football operations at Boise State in 2004 when the Broncos went 11-1 and won the WAC title.

  58. Ccal December 31, 2015 10:46 am

    I am,
    all in with Coach Rollo!!
Looking forward to the upcoming season.

  59. Birdie December 31, 2015 10:52 am

Agree on moving Unga to DE, he played this position in HS. We need help on the DLine.

  60. Rodney December 31, 2015 10:58 am

    Hope we recruit east too
    it could help our other
    sports programs.!!!
    Lets go Warriors!!!!!

  61. H-Man December 31, 2015 11:19 am

Rolo previously said his recruiting will focus on the west coast, primarily California. But with Lempa’s hire, I would think we may continue to see recruits east of the Mississippi. Getting Jason Cvercko was a big get.

  62. Maddog50 December 31, 2015 11:25 am

Watching the games Dew Muir and Davis all having a great time And we got……oh well Coaches players lets get this thing fixed-Go Warriors!!!!!

  63. z December 31, 2015 11:45 am

Watched Texas Tech game. Their defense got gashed 384 yds rushing. Saw Fehoko on the dline. He was getting knocked around by the LSU oline. Tech coach said that they would have to improve talent on that side of the ball.

  64. Old School Dave December 31, 2015 11:51 am

Coach has his staff in place. Time to get to work. Can’t wait for Spring Ball. Any word on the Strength & Conditioning Coach? There seems to be something that has been missing for the past few years; enthusiasm and hope. In some ways, it’s like 1999, all over again

How about televising the Spring Game in order to generate some PR and support?

  65. Da Punchbowl Kid December 31, 2015 11:58 am

    Happy New Year errbody! 😉

Hopping to see big bodies among the recruits. RB too.

    Go get ’em Coaches!

    Go Warriors!!!

  66. Maddog50 December 31, 2015 11:59 am

Bow war go to the UH website for info on DL coach, been there for a few weeks. Picked Wisconsin Houston and now Clemson. Scott Pagano is a back up DL # 56 for Clemson-

  67. hitmanhart December 31, 2015 12:26 pm

aloha everyone !! hope everyone have a happy new year and get to enjoy tonight as we say aloha to 2015 !! and welcome in 2016 !! and also welcome in UH new football staff some old faces and a lot of new faces !! and most all let all the good times rolo back in to aloha stadium !! and most all thank you ST for keep us up to date on all UH sports !! u da best !!

    I am.
All in with Coach Rollo and his coaching staff!!!
Looking forward to the upcoming season.

  69. z December 31, 2015 1:01 pm

Amazing how Wisconsin used 4 redshirt freshmen on their oline against USC.

  70. (Jesse)James December 31, 2015 1:07 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos…

Well, I’ll just wait and see what happens before I pass judgement on the coaching staff.

Hope all of you have a happy, bleesed, joyous, healthy, and prosperous new year.

    Hauoli Makahiki Hou.

  71. (Jesse)James December 31, 2015 1:07 pm

    Ooops….meant “blessed”

  72. islandman December 31, 2015 1:08 pm

I thought we wanted to get away from recent Grad Assistants for coaching positions at UH ? The new LB coach, Duggan, played for Boston College, 2011-14 and was a Grad Asst. there last season. Very little coaching experience, if that counts for anything.

  73. hitmanhart December 31, 2015 1:56 pm

ok some wishes for 2016 !!
    1) see rolo do good !!
    2) 7 wins for da football team !!
    3) more money for UH SPORTS !
    4) a new stadium !! or major repairs to the old one !!
    5) new gov !! someone that has vision !! that backs up hawaii team !!
    6) new AD or someone to train this one !! and let him know that football is his money maker !! and you have to fund that program that make the other program go !!

  74. tom December 31, 2015 2:09 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

Coach Rolo will live and die with his hires and for that reason alone, his choices should be respected.

Like those AlteS (employment placement) Ads featuring an unemploed coach. And folks, don’t keep knocking someone that’s already down.

  75. H-Man December 31, 2015 2:15 pm

    Hau’oli Makahiki hou!

  76. Warrior Dave December 31, 2015 2:21 pm

Very interesting to listen to Taryn Hatcher as co-host with Gary Dickson this morning. She said she’s spoken to several Hawaii prized recruits. Rolo has them excited and interested in playing for UH. That’s a big change from prior years. Gary also said the BYU and Stanford commits have withdrawn their acceptance and exploring their options. Not to say UH will get them but at least we may be in the discussion.

  77. Maddog50 December 31, 2015 2:26 pm

A slightly open door beats one that is shut and locked-go get them Coach Rolovich!!!

  78. graham December 31, 2015 2:44 pm

I really was hoping for Ashely Leile. Trusting Rolo though

  79. SteveM December 31, 2015 2:51 pm

Here’s hoping for a brighter new year… Happy New Year, everyone!

Welcome to all the football coaches!

  80. al December 31, 2015 3:13 pm

    WDave…you mean Gary Dickman?

  81. A-House December 31, 2015 4:02 pm

should UH go after one and done or 2 and done players instead of building from the ground up allowing “youngsters” to learn their positions and be ready to play as a true freshman or red-shirt freshman?

if they are good and learn quickly, UH should have a solid foundation by 2017 or no later than 2018

“prized recruits” eh? will the real Rolo stand up and be counted!!!

Rolo’s dad and a certain fire boat captain in San Francisco Bay are very close friends his dad got Rolo to autograph a picture of him as a Hawaii QB for Mrs A-House – very treasured part of our sports collection!

  82. al December 31, 2015 4:24 pm

A house…one and done dline would be nice if he projects to be in the rotation. Same with an OT or DB.

Someone with 2 yrs equates to a JC transfer. Again take em if project to be within the first two rotations.

…and by the way, Happy New Year!

  83. Inyoface December 31, 2015 5:09 pm

    Bring back the helmet stickers.

  84. Ipu Man December 31, 2015 5:13 pm

    Looks promising.

  85. Big Bubba December 31, 2015 5:37 pm

Alright! Coaching staff is in place. Can’t wait to see the recruits we get. Go get Coach Rolo!

  88. Frannyk December 31, 2015 7:17 pm

I’m kinda disappointed that Stutz didn’t get the WR coaching job.

Rolo said he wanted to hire a guy who loved the program, the Islands and it’s people as much as he did. Someone who wouldn’t leave after a year on the job. Stutz still bleeds Green and White. His heart is here and his love is here. Too bad. Maybe soon sometime.

    Nevertheless, LIVE ALOHA, PLAY WARRIOR!

I’m willing to bet that the BC coaches noticed that Duggan would be a good coach even before he was a senior.

  91. tom-warriornation December 31, 2015 9:45 pm

Boston College was the #1 defensive team in the nation last year allowing just 254 yards per game:

Very good defensive showing despite their losses:

    2016.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  94. RICK January 1, 2016 3:21 am

WHAT DID ROLO DO WITH THE NON-FOOTBALL STAFF MEMBERS? BRAD JONES, DORY KONG (WHO I HAVE HEARD WAS A REAL MISTAKE HIRE FROM MEMEBERS OF CHOWS STAFF), UPES? PEOPLE ONLY LOOK AT THE NINE GUYS COACHING THE BOYS BUT SO MANY MORE PEOPLE WERE DISPLACED.

  95. Whats up January 1, 2016 4:49 am

I think Kapakahi has a point about the hire of the Boston College Graduate Assistant coach Sean Duggan as Line Backers coach.

I mean seriously, Norm Chow did hire the Utah GA’s Jordan Wynn (QB coach) and Luke Matthews (WR coach). I get flash backs of how poorly the QB and WR’s played.

And it does beg to question why hire a GA Sean Duggan with extreme limited coaching experience over current LB coach or other applicants?

I’m not saying Sean Duggan won’t do well as a LB coach and he might very well be a good recruiter on the East Coast. But recent history tells us that the odds are stacked against this being a diamond in the rough GA hire at recruiting geographically challenged Hawaii.

  96. cappie the dog January 1, 2016 6:55 am

It sounds better if you describe Kefense Hynson as Montana’s ex-QB coach/co-offensive coordinator than the wide receiver coach for Norfolk State.

Montana is big time in FCS circles, whereas Norfolk State made only one post-season appearance and was 4-7 last season.

I trust Coach Rolovich and am looking forward to seeing my first football game since USC.

  97. 808warriorfan January 1, 2016 7:42 am

Now that Coach “Rolo” has his staff in place it’s time to give him 100% support from the fans … hopefully he’s got good recruiters that can help keep some GOOD local kids at home and change a few minds. Maybe Fred Ulu-Perry can share his experience w/ these players … GO ‘BOWS … LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR & a

HAPPY NEW YEAR MY FELLOW WARRIOR FANS !!!!!

I love college football, but I hate the way that money has changed and dominated the sport. This is one reason I hope for Rolo’s success– he will be doing it without spending the big bucks thrown around by other schools these days. He will make up for the big bucks by choosing good people on the way up, committed to Hawaii, or not receiving the glamour coaching offers from the big time schools or big time wannabes. I don’t think the sport can survive when assistant coaches– including many from Hawaii or former Hawaii coaches, can get paid more than Rolo for being a position coach in mediocre Pac 12 teams, or when assistants in the SEC are in bidding wars and getting paid more than most head coaches in conferences like the Mountain West. When Pac 12 position coaches are being paid $200,000 to $400,000 and teams have to hire 7 or 8 guys like that it is only a matter of time.

    Kapakahi has a point, but…
Where do people think coaches come from? Most start as GAs.
I have noticed a general prejudice against hiring coaches, and especially young coaches, that are not known locally. Like Hynson is already being questions instead of Stutzmann, or Lelie who doesn’t have much experience either. Duggan is questioned but there was little objection to Lance Samuseva. Going back a few years, no one questioned elevating some GA named Ken Niumatalolo to full-time assistant, or hiring some guys named Rich Miano or Chris Naeole despite little or no experience.

    92. Whats up
It’s the low salary cap that the UH administration budgeted for the Assistant Coaching staff that requires the selection of young and sometimes inexperienced staff selections. It may also be a trade off for bringing in an experienced DC.

#96 …I think people are just skeptical because of how Wynn and Matthews worked out. Both were given a lot of responsibilities with little experience. We saw the results.

I would have liked a more experienced hire for the WRs though. I think they need a lot of work.

But I’m all in regardless. I have a good feeling about Rolo, so I’ll trust his hire.

  102. kahuna January 1, 2016 9:22 am

Is it possible that Duggan’s hire is a money thing. With Rolo wanting a full time recruiting coordinator and Lempa choosing to work with the db’s….there is no money to get an experienced lb coach. Got to pay the recruiting coordinator so one position got to be manned by a GA.

If Lempa chose to eork with the lbs and get a GA to help Abe in the secondary then it would be more “manageable”.

Other reason could be that UH will switch from 4 lbs to a 2 or 3 lbs scheme with a hybrid db/lb in the base defense. That would make sense for Lempa to help in the secondary since there will be 5 db’s in the game at all time.

With today’s uptempo style offense….its the way to go I think.

  103. kapakahi January 1, 2016 9:28 am

Hope that Duggan will be one of the successful exceptions……but promoting a GA (after just 1 year of coaching experience; not even the allowed 2 years) to a full-time assistant coaches is not typical……except with Chow (Rauscher, Powell, Wynn, Matthews) with poor results (Powell the lone exception).

The comparisons to the others are not quite applicable. Stutzmann GA’d for 1-year each at 2 different programs; Lelie and Samuseva worked as volunteer intern coaches for 2-to-3 years under the full-time assistants; Miano was a private coach (after his pro career) prepping college players for the NFL combine and tryouts; while Naeole had a long NFL career which included mentoring younger OL (including Vince Manuwai) and coached HS for 2 years.

Just remember our current governor does not give any priority to UH Athletics. He could have really helped out, but instead chose to snub his nose at our guys and gals in green and white.

  105. el burro sabio January 1, 2016 9:43 am

Kapakahi, my point is familiarity. We know a lot about those who played or coached here so you can rattle off their history to justify why they are better candidates. We don’t know the background of guys like Hynson, Duggan, or even Suiaunoa and hiring coaches unknown to us brings skepticism.
People don’t apply their own familiarity expectations to coaches or even governors. Hey I wanted Stutzmann cause I’m familiar with him but Hynson seems to have a good pedigree. When Chow and Ige went with people they are familiar with but others are not, their choices are met with skepticism. If going with the familiar choice is good for one person, it should be good for others as well.

    #101,

Had first-hand experience working with the Gov…….over a decade ago…….and concluded that……the Gov is an idealist (in that he sees everything in black-and-white; which is often stereotypical of electrical engineers)…….and definitely is not a realist…….so won’t accept compromises…..which are often needed to reach practical solutions/resolutions.

  107. kapakahi January 1, 2016 10:03 am

    #102,

I agree that……familiarity should not be among the primary issues/concerns.

However, familiarity typically does affect recruiting……at least among some local HS programs.

Duggan’s lack of coaching experience won’t matter as long much as he can effectively recruit…….at least abroad if not locally…….which should be among the program’s primary issues/concerns.

  108. BigFan January 1, 2016 10:04 am

Kapakahi, that’s (stereotype) funny coming from an engineer. So, I take it that you are not in the electrical field? Maybe Ige needed to get his MBA so he could get into the nuts and bolts to balance his thinking? Your observation does seem to be true.

  109. BigFan January 1, 2016 10:06 am

BTW, I did vote for the man just to have a change in leadership but that’s the problem the grass is always greener on the other side. I hope things do get better for him and the state.

  110. z January 1, 2016 10:24 am

So Goff is going pro. That should make next years game interesting.

  111. Old School Dave January 1, 2016 10:32 am

Just need to wait and see how these new coaches perform and get across their message across to the players. Agree, that Coach Rolovich is dealing with financial constraints, but he’s doing the best that he can and isn’t complaining. Let’s also not forget the need to upgrade the talent level. Both Coach Dugan and Hynson will have some talented players to work with at their respective positions. Will be watching them with interest this spring. Recruiting and upgrading the talent level will be crucial.

Need to remember that when June Jones put together his staff in 1999 he hired two local high school coaches, two former pro players with little or no coaching experience, and two small college coaches.

  112. doug January 1, 2016 10:35 am

    Goff will be a bust

  113. Old School Dave January 1, 2016 10:37 am

Make that three small college coaches that were hired by Jones in 1999. Forgot about Mike Cavanaugh who was a quality control guy with the Chargers, but spent a number of years coaching at the small college level prior to that. The other coach hired was George Lumpkin (longtime UH assistant) and Greg McMackin (came from Erickson’s Seahawks staff).

Goff is on of 4 or 5 Cal Bears going pro!

UCLA in 2017 at the Rose Bowl – looks like a good time to visit California especially with Harry Potter opening on 4/7/2016 at Universal Studios in Burbank – maybe a visit to Santa Clara if the Niners are playing at home!

me no like one and done, but exception is with the Gov, State of Hawaii – no vote from me for re-election

some say engineers and accountants should be placed in a little corner to work and not be heard – very little skill with interpersonal relationships

  115. kapakahi January 1, 2016 10:41 am

    BF,

Nope not an EE…..but a couple of my college housemates were……and are still the same way today decades later…….so I definitely recognized the same character traits in the Gov…….having fully experienced it previously.

At least this Gov is analytical and probably therefore predictable……whereas nobody ever knew what his predecessor was thinking and/or going to say.

  116. A-House January 1, 2016 10:44 am

with Chip Kelly available – maybe the 49ers will fire Tomosula and hire Kelly – makes sense to me

what would it cost to buy the 49ers franchise? $2 billion or less seeing their tumble the past 2 years because of ownership/management decisions – sentiments are worth nothing; just like in insurance – no value except to limited persons!!!

  117. kapakahi January 1, 2016 10:47 am

    #111,

I don’t fit that stereotype……but maybe the Gov does.

oh, btw, happy new year to Al, all Tsaikos around the world, family and friends, and LTUH Fan, Florida Ted, Rasu Bagasu, Calvin from Kona, and Big Hilo Fan2!!!

2016 saw very limited fireworks in our valley [ thank goodness ] and sunrise brought a cloudless sky with bright sunshine – was hoping for the entire morning to be like this, but the clouds have started to form over the valley – shucks, limited hot water and free electricity

weather story in SA says, for certain Hawaii locations, it was the wettest “dry season” in the past 30 years! yikes, we went through an entire month and not seeing the moon

yep, there is MasaBoy admiring his handy dandy newly

  120. kapakahi January 1, 2016 10:55 am

One of the primary reasons that Jim Harbaugh got let go was……because the 49er ownership/management couldn’t handle his OCD personality.

While maybe not with the same extreme OCD personality as Harbaugh, Eagle ownership/management cut Chip Kelly loose because he wanted to maintain full control over player personnel decisions…..which 49er ownership may not want to re-visit again.
