Warriors arrive

PARK  RIDGE, N.J. — The Warriors arrived this morning and promptly went to their rooms for a nap. They had taken a non-stop flight from Honolulu to Newark, N.J., then the 30-minute bus ride to some place called Park Ridge.

The Warriors will have a walk-through this afternoon in either a ballroom or on the hotel grounds. Then it’s an evening of meetings and more meetings. There will be a full practice tomorrow.

Interesting roster moves. Justin Clapp, Jordan Monaco, and Parker Paredes all made the travel squad because of their play on special teams. Give credit to Clapp, son of  UH associate AD Carl Clapp. It can be difficult being the son of a high-profile administrator. But Justin Clapp works hard, and never complains. He earned the roster spot. And give credit to Carl Clapp for not being intrusive. He stays away from practices. They made the best of a sensitive situation.

All right!! Time to settle in and adjust to the time change… and go fo’ broke!!!

  18. Garret September 8, 2010 7:59 am

It is nice that UH can afford to be able to have the players fly out on Tuesday for a Saturday game. The team can adjust to the time zone and be able to practice later this week after getting over the jet lag.

The Warriors will miss 8 days of school before returning, so hopefully the academic people along for the trip will keep them on track.

    It’s a beautiful area.

And West Point is in the perfect place. Hidden away from everything.

By the way, not sure why Boise (“trees”) is in Idaho. New Jersey has way more trees.

  21. Stephen Tsai September 8, 2010 8:00 am

We got to chat with the Army guys yesterday. That’s a focused team.

  22. Garret September 8, 2010 8:00 am

Utah State lost their top 3 WRs in less than 4 months. Any more injuries and they will be seriously limited when they play UH.

Utah State receiver Matt Austin suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Oklahoma game.

A first-team Southern California Football Association All-Central Conference selection at Mt. San Antonio College last year, Austin was considered the Aggies’ top receiver.

“It’s the third time we’ve lost our best receiver in the last four months,” Andersen said.

  23. Slugger September 8, 2010 8:02 am

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  24. Garret September 8, 2010 8:03 am

I’ve talked before about how I’d like to see if UH could get neutral-site games scheduled on the mainland. Here is another data point–Oregon and LSU are playing at Cowboys Stadium next year. Not only do both teams recruit heavily in Texas (LSU has 7 underclassmen players from Texas), they will get nice checks from TV and Jerry Jones.

Similar to the game LSU just played in Atlanta against North Carolina, the Tigers showdown with the Ducks is expected to be a national television game in a prime-time slot on either ESPN or ABC.

LSU will earn $3.25-3.5 million for the game, which eclipses the net the university hauls in for a home game against non-BCS level program – Ausberry estimated the revenue at about $2.2 million.

  25. Garret September 8, 2010 8:06 am

BSU’s merchandising revenue sure has taken off. Getting their logo items in nationwide department stores will bring $$$ in. It would be great if UH could more aggressively license items with its logo on it.

The Boise State Bookstore now ships Bronco merchandise to all 50 states and annual sales have resulted in more than $1 million going back to fund scholarships. And more than 350 licensees now make Boise State products from Scentsy Plug-In Room Warmers to Snuggies to yes, even a Boise State Mr. Potato Head.

This year, Broncos gear will be in Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Old Navy, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Costco, JC Penney, Kohls and Dillards across the country.

ST: do they seem more focused than Navy or Air Force?

  27. gigi-hawaii September 8, 2010 8:10 am

    ST,

When David and I flew coach on JAL in May, we were really cramped. So I wonder how these hulky and tall football players managed on their flight. Did they fly coach or business class?

  28. Stephen Tsai September 8, 2010 8:12 am

    Players flew coach.

Continental has nice long-distance planes. Each seat has its own monitor, so you can choose from a menu of shows/movies.

But we traveled on United. United Plus is the best. I think there are a few more inches of room.

Phil Steele lists UH at #17 in this list for the top performances on last week.

  33. Buffoman September 8, 2010 8:22 am

Garret, you and I have always agreed on one thing…winning works wonders!

If we did not have the serious come down following the Sugar Bowl beat down, who knows, the message from Garret could have just as easily been UH as opposed to BSU.

Kekoa (from previous post) yes we did give those ESPN folks something to talk about, no doubt. BUT to keep that conversation going, we need to win the “big” WAC games, not play dead in what may be “bodybag games”, and possibly surprise a few by winning a BIG one.

Can’t do that in a single dimensional manner. BSU wins because they do not have many flaws in the three areas, they can out score you, they can beat you on defense and watch out for their special team play (on BSU’s first game against #10). What we saw in our first game was that we could shred them on offense but were shredding on defense and special team (I call it shredded on pspecial team as the play was a game changer).

Conversations end quickly if that is the trend of a team.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a UH fan, but that does not mean that I cannot criticize what I see as a weakness to greatness.

  34. madeinhawaii September 8, 2010 8:23 am

    Garret,

BSU’s merchandising all round the nation is just another example of how “winning takes care of everything,” eh? Another reason why it is imperative that the Warriors do well this season and get to the Bowl game with 8 wins or more and come back next season with a pre-season ranking or a good number of votes, anyway.

  35. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 8:31 am

#20… ST… fo’ real!!! I went through basic training in the Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey… two squads actually got lost during our last bivouac in which we had to follow maps and road march it back to our unit area! (No, the squad I was in got back fine.) But, those trees and loamy sand just seemed to go on forever!

  36. Garret September 8, 2010 8:31 am

    madeinhawaii,

The thing is, even when UH was winning big and on ESPN 6 or so times a season (2006/2007), UH did not start the process of pushing UH-branded items around the country. Maybe the problem is that UH doesn’t have everyone working together like BSU has.

If I remember correctly, the Athletic Department doesn’t control merchandising and in fact receives a tiny fraction of merchandising revenue, so there is little incentive for UHAD to push merchandising. And the agencies at UH that *do* get that revenue seem too busy or not proactive enough to push UH’s merchandise to anyone except for fans in Hawaii.

Think about all of the media attention that UH got in 2006 and 2007. Then try to think about *any* mention of UH trying to get its merchandise available anywhere outside of Hawaii. Hawaii itself is a selling point as people like Hawaii (on the mainland and in Asia). The “H” logo is a selling point. All those ESPN appearances were a selling point. And UH did nothing. Texas gets $10+ million per year from merchandising, BSU is looking at passing $1 million per year and UH has a problem stocking Rainbowtique. Big contrast.

#25… Garret… Just got done with back-to-school shopping for our younger kids. Ended up at Target for most of their clothes. Lots of collegiate apparel for fans of most big-name schools. I would’ve been shocked to find BSU gear there, and I’m always optimistic at possibly finding UH stuff… even though I know they don’t exist nationally yet. For once, I’d like to be proven wrong, and find something unexpected!

  40. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 8:42 am

#36… Garret… not only is the “H” a selling point, but it’s also been copied by several mainland teams already! Remember that article last year about UH and some school trying to work out details on use of UH’s “H”? Plus, if I recall correctly, that school’s colors were the same as UH’s too.

  41. rage777 September 8, 2010 8:45 am

USMA, aka, West Point conjurs up many thoughts of the great Army leaders of the past and stirs the emotions of most if not all graduates.

Being an OCS type from Benning, I am looking forward to my trip to West Point. Unlike Dave R, I’m sure I will walk away with a totally different perspective.

Much like seeing all the names of former graduates at US Army Wal College at Carlisle Barrcks in Pennsylvania. I keep reminding myfamily that my name is also on Class of 1985 plaque.

    USMA BF

I imagine the bonding process “back in the day” really cemented a lot of friendships at the Academy. What year did you graduate? Must have been difficult to stay in touch with classmates who were stationed all over Conus and the world. How wonderful it must be to have the opportunity to combine football, friends, and food! 3 out of 5 Tsaiko F’s! Sending our very best to your wife. Please tell her to come here and give a shout out.

  52. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 9:10 am

ST & DR… If you or any other Tsaikos ever come across the West Point Band rehearsing for this weekend’s game, send my aloha to their Commander, Mr. Morse (from “Dewey”). (DR knows my last name, as he worked with a cousin of mine at the Star Bulletin). Mr. Morse and I were stationed together at Camp Zama, Japan, back in 91-92. The West Point band is one of the rare ones throughout the whole Army Band field that actually does a halftime routine. Much harder to do shows like that with so few members… unlike the 200-300+ that most colleges and even some high schools have.

  56. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 9:20 am

Garret… most western representation I’ve found in certain sporting goods/apparel shops around here are all PAC 10 teams and BYU. Although, I did come across one store a couple of years ago that had one UH hat… with the “UH” and First Hawaiian Bank rainbow on it! Mind you… this was years after the transformation to the tapa “H”, and “Warriors” moniker.

That store has since closed due to the economy (and probably their outdated merchandise).

  57. Kekoa (iPhone) September 8, 2010 9:22 am

Bowman ~ Good points. We agreed that the key to success is to win. We also tread the merchandising path before today. NOTHING has been done about it. The largest wholesale maker of flags on this island complains that UH won’t license them to design and sell flags and related retail stuff to their many, many outlets.

This school is a basket case when it comes to creating their own opportunites. No wonder they’re so – broke, busted, disgusted and can’t be

    trusted!

    http://www.nakoa.org/?p=524

  59. Dave Reardon September 8, 2010 9:39 am

    54. Michigan Warrior, 2LTs are indeed dangerous weapons … unfortunately often against their own troops’ welfare and morale. We had a really bad one when I was in the 100th BN. He LOST a bunch of mars system (the gear that made noise to simulate being ‘hit’) equipment one day, and we spent two hours looking for it in the woods after drill was supposed to be over.

    47. A-House, I’m sure anyone who visits West Point will have different impressions and I’m sure mine would be enahnced if we stayed longer and looked around more. I was just an enlisted reservist a long time ago, but it was still very interesting to see the place where some of the officers I knew and served under got their training, and a place I’d read and heard so much about. You might enjoy a book by a guy named Rick Atkinson entitled “The Long Gray Line.” It focuses on the USMA class of 1966 … obviously a tumultuous time in U.S. history. Very, very well-written and reported with lots about the history of West Point and how it had changed over the years.

  60. Kekoa (iPhone) September 8, 2010 9:47 am

MW ~ I’m a ’86 grad of Camp Zama’s Saturday morning flea market. Does that count? Nah!…j/k. Was TDY on a mission in Feb ’86, stayed there at the camp.

Later we moved to the US Embassey compound whereupon they sent us to parts unknown to do devilish things. Was fun while it lasted. The Consolidated NCO club threw a pretty mean Luau while we were there at Zama.

  61. Pomai September 8, 2010 9:58 am

Again I ask – where is everyone going to watch the army game?

  62. USMA BOW FAN September 8, 2010 9:59 am

BG- the West Point environment certainly does make bonds that last a lifetime. I graduated in ’83. This trip will be only the second time I’ve been back since graduating and my wife hasn’t seen me this excited in a while.

I was also fortunate to have spent a few years in the 100th Bn. From that experience I gained a tremendous amount of respect for UH’s ROTC program. Almost all of our LTs came from UH and I can only think of two that were subpar (okay, one subpar, and one dangerous).

I think the best book on West Point is David Lipsky’s “Absolutely American”.

  63. Stephen Tsai September 8, 2010 10:01 am

The Academy has interesting feel. There’s the old-time architecture mixed with modern sensibilities. It’s a nice mix.

  64. madeinhawaii September 8, 2010 10:02 am

  66. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 10:11 am

Funny story about going to the “field” while at Zama…

Prior to this assignment, I’d been stationed with the 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, California twice, as well as the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Casey, Korea twice. When we went to the field, we really went out into the boondocks… to dig holes, practice processing “Enemy Prisoners-of-War”, running security for the DTOC (the Division’s Tactical Operations Center during wartime), etc.

While at Camp Zama, we went to the field once where we set up GP-Mediums on a grassy field directly across the street from the homes of a couple of unit members! Hilarious… going through the motions of doing our job while civilians and family members sat or stood across the street watching. Funnier still, that one spouse actually asked her husband if he could take a break and have some gyoza! Boy, we were really roughing-it during that FTX (field-training-exercise)!

My #35… I meant “loamy soil”… but you already knew that!

ROAD WARRIORS BABY!!!! Let’s go knock’m in da mouth!

I LOVE the idea of Neutral site games in the future! So if we were to play Kansas in Las Vegas, would that be considered Neutral?? Probably not. I love the idea though. Las Vegas always gonna bring out Hawaii folks. But that might mean one less home game. WE might have to prepare for that in the future.

    BIK

  73. Stephen Tsai September 8, 2010 10:26 am

I do like Garret’s suggestion of playing on a neutral field.

But I also think it’s fun for UH to go into a place with great tradition. Playing at Penn State, LSU, Ohio State or Michigan would be an amazing experience for Hawaii.

It would be fun if UH could play in all of the BCS bowl stadiums, such as the Rose Bowl and that University of Phoenix stadium.

  74. Stephen Tsai September 8, 2010 10:27 am

Nice descriptions of the West Point area. The descriptions also sound like another historic area–Yorktown, VA. Almost made me wish I went –with the New England cruise tacked on. Geee, the whole game and cruise package tour was only $2,600 a few months ago. No $$$ and no roomie for now.

    Good question.

But if anyone is planning on going to Genji’s for the buffet breakfast, please let me know or call direct. I think the count is low on their end and there is concern about food supplies. Genji must bring in breakfast supplies like fruit, waffles, sausages, etc. since they do not normally open at breakfast…and seldom 2 hours after closing time the night before. 😐

Art promised that Tsai-ko buffets will be all-you-can-eat. 🙂 So an approximate count will aide his fuud ordering.

d1 – After all these years, i’ve FINALLY found you. Be Aware, be VERY AWARE!

  92. Kekoa September 8, 2010 11:06 am

Pomai ~ I wasn’t trying to be a smart azz, but I did tell you at the t-gate what my plans were. We both agreed that Genji’s was a little out of the way for such an early call. I know you don’t care for Ige’s, Nancy’s or Big City Diner…soooo, I dunno what to say braddah. C&K lounge is close by where you live, and that’s Pride’s man cave.

  93. NCAA September 8, 2010 11:09 am

    What is Seeweed?

  94. Garret September 8, 2010 11:10 am

    Na Koa Mike,

Thank you for posting the Lunch Report–I wish I could have been there and I’ve treasured every Na Koa Lunch I’ve been to.

Only one minor editing suggestion: UH’s starting center should be referred to as “Tiwanak”, not “Tiwanek”.

  95. RoyGBivs [Terence Twk Wong] September 8, 2010 11:14 am

Whoo HOO…. Good Luck Warriors in NYC, can’t wait for Saturday!!! Nice pictures ST, how’s about some of the natural scenery around the area for those of us who couldn’t travel with the team. Hate this economy!!

  96. Garret September 8, 2010 11:14 am

I think that stadiums such as the Rose Bowl or the 49ers or Raiders stadiums would make the most sense. Those stadiums would bring in a *lot* more money than the stadium in Vegas (more seats and more upgraded seating for premium prices) and UH recruits more in Northern and Southern California than they do in Vegas. All the recruits in the areas also makes it attractive for other teams to play there.

When the new NFL stadium opens in Santa Clara, that would be a perfect site for neutral site games for UH. It seems like some new NFL stadiums look for college teams to play neutral site games to help bring in extra money and use the stadiums on more days…*some* team will play an annual game in that stadium if UH doesn’t grab it!

  97. Kekoa September 8, 2010 11:14 am

d1島 ~ No worry beef curry. Juliet can fight off the Seaweed Lady while #2 son crushes her with his best shot. Meanwhile. you can be posting the blow-by-blow on the blog.

    Garret ~

    Re: #96

I was thinking the same thing when I received some advanced promotional material from the 49er’s regarding their new digs. I like the location being so close to SJ, hotels, easy access and the airport. Plus, being right next door to Great America Park is another perk for your girls to enjoy.

  99. al September 8, 2010 11:29 am

tell juliet save some limu kohou for me. should be located near the seaweed lady’s armpits.

  100. Garret September 8, 2010 11:31 am

    Kekoa,

I would love an excuse to go to the Bay Area for another UH game. Having UH play in a NFL stadium every year would be a huge recruiting tool and would be a big boost to UH’s recruiting in the area…in addition to giving UHAD a nice 7-figure check.

UH cannot do too many neutral-site games, but one per year could be about right. If UH has problems scheduling games if it goes indy, reducing travel by offering a game in California makes sense.

  101. Seeweed Lady September 8, 2010 11:35 am

  103. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 8, 2010 11:38 am

Mahalo for the information on the pan laulau or is it lau lau? Perhaps DrDoc might be around early enough at a T-Gate to get a taste of it – but he does have to watch his sodium intake. He’s gotten pretty good at using his eyeballs to measure the amount he’s consuming.

As for my sort-of-kidding suggestion about a Tsai-ko directory with pictures/blogname/real name information, there are a lot of Tsai0kos who aren’t able to attend the various real-life functions very often but who might like to have that information available.

Also, I’ve run into reluctance issues many times both in asking people to use my real name instead of my blog name when talking to me f-2-f as well asking folks what their real world names are. Some folks won’t even respond to an inquiry about their T-Names so it’s kind of difficult to talk to someone without that core information.

Where are people watching Saturday’s game? Murphy’s and Big City Diner will be open. Any other public locations? Is the game going to be aired again later that day or on Sunday?

  104. NCAA September 8, 2010 11:44 am

I wonder if the school/athletic dept. gets any revenues from this. Had many people buying. I heard one guy say to a Costco employee, “If UH loses on Saturday, the shirts coming back.”

  132. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 2:00 pm

#126… BG… I was stationed at Camp Casey in 83-84, with my return trip from 86-91. There were several “Super Hooches” built as barracks on both Casey and Hovey over the years, with a brand new PX on Casey added back around the time between the 86 Asian Games and the 88 Olympics. That helped to get us out of those Korean War-era Quonset Huts. They even started covering those “Turtle Traps” so that people would stop falling in and getting hurt.

All of that matters not now, since 2ID moved to Camp Red Cloud in Uijongbu a few years ago. Don’t know what Tongduchon looks like anymore… especially since the RoK police and US MP’s are really buckling down on “short times” and “overnights” down range… now punishable under the UCMJ and part of our USFK SoFA.

  133. Michigan Warrior September 8, 2010 2:07 pm

#125… Old Diver… I hope ST and DR suggest it to Coach Mack… AND that we do something like this to set a precedent… That would be a class act that would further endear us to the nation if we do publicly acknowledge each and every one of those cadets and officers out there!!!

In fact, have Coach Mack announce our intentions to do this (after the Alma Mater is done) in one of the press conferences leading up to the game.

    That would be awesome!!!

  134. Garret September 8, 2010 2:08 pm

BYU’s head coach mentioned UH when talking about setting up their schedules as an independent school.

We could have some more 2011 schedule news this week. On our postgame show last Saturday, Bronco said two remaining games “might be solidified as early as this week.” BYU has ten games either confirmed or likely for 2011, and if BYU plays at Hawaii (as anticipated), that would leave an option for a 13th game.

Mendenhall noted that independent scheduling is “pretty liberating.” He said he would like to accomplish three objectives:

    1) “span the country” to provide “access for fans, wherever they might be…in all four different quadrants of the country.”

    2) create “natural rivalries, if there’s intrigue” with schools like Notre Dame and Boston College.

    3) create “significant experiences” for his players at some of the “most storied places” in college football; places like Michigan, Army or Navy. He also noted that he would like to regularly schedule Hawaii.

  135. mouthwash September 8, 2010 2:10 pm

the only reason Clapp is on the team is because his dad is the AAD. that is being intrusive enough, he is just going to sit on the scout team and never do anything.

    Pomai,

sjmacro & myki are going to Murphy’s for the Army game. I’m staying home, rolling out of bed, making coffee & watching the game. Hope I don’t fall asleep on the couch…

Saw the same UH stuff at Sam’s Club yesterday. Kop Enterprises has that stuff mfg’d, so I don’t think UH gets much. What they might get is a license fee per item; NAU used to charge something like $.25 per item to use it’s name, initials, or logo.

Justin Clapp, #13, has been doing good on the scout team making receptions. Parker Paredes I’ve also seen on the field making plays. Good to see that they got to travel.

  145. BG September 8, 2010 3:05 pm

Yep…we have plenny vets here! #132 Michigan Warrior, brought lots of funny memories back! We only had quonsets for living quarters. I am grateful for this amazing incredible document; this is the kind of step that retains me though out the day.I have forever recently been searching around for the internet site following I noticed about these from a friend and was thrilled when I was able to discover it just after researching for a while. Being a serious blogger, I’m pleased to view others taking initiative and giving towards the community. I just wished to review to exhibit my thanks to your post as it is very pushing, and lots of freelance writers tend not to get the credit score they ought to have. I’m positive I’ll be back and can deliver some of my good friends.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Glad to see bruddah Moniz is healthy and ready for sling some pigskin again. Funny how so many jump on the bandwagon cause bruddah Austin went toss those two TD’s, and expect him for start. Moniz is the best QB we got on the roster as he has the all around package. Yes, he had a couple bad passes and needed to settle down but when he’s in the groove he is a headache for any team to defend. Austin going get his chances and yes he did look very poised and threw a nice ball but right now Moniz if he can stay healthy could be the best QB in the WAC with Kellen Moore. I see what Coach Rolo sees in him and think that Moniz could be the best dual threat QB UH has ever had. Colt, Timmy, D-Rob, Rolo could throw…Carter, Gabriel, Inoke, could run…Moniz can do both and his arm strength is vastly improved from last year! If the Oline continues being succesful giving him time in the pocket he has too many weapons at his disposal to inflict damage on everybody. I may be speaking too soon or may sound crazy but by years end I bet Moniz gets some All-American consideration…

PB ~ You have a valid point and no one here disputes that. I think that what we were sayin’ was that he should take a break and sit this one out just to err on the side of caution. We have 2 great backup QB’s that can step in. JJ took his time in getting CB back in the game, why not be more careful with Mo?

Since they are in fact going with him, then the point is moot.

    GO WARRIORS!

No matter if he is Hawaii Nei, or the mountains of Utah.

Weber St. is very fortunate to have him back.

I was just looking forward to seeing him back in the islands playing for the Warriors, as were about 1.2 million other Hawaii residents.

Kekoa, howzit my bad I not talking about on the blog people jumping on the bandwagon. I talking about the fairweather fans that quick to jump the gun when they see success but also quick to shoot down the team when they get pilikia too. Sheesh one game and already think Austin is the man. Austin get um fo shua but I no like the merry go round QB situation happening again. I hope Moniz is 100% and all signs say he’s all pono, so he’s the man hands down. Austin going get his and Rausch is capable so if Moniz no can, den I feel comfortable these guys can produce. Shute with the amount of weapons on the offense, could put Jamarcus Russell behind center and he would look like Peyton Manning, maybe.

i won’t be surprised if moniz does in fact sit this one out. head injuries are too touch n go and are the most critical of all injuries to be messing around with. my guess is that come game day he sits, because mack wants to do the right thing inspite of what is at stake.

in which case i believe that austin will get the nod.

I’m glad that Texas will have this tribute to a Wyoming player this week.

Texas will have a pregame tribute for Wyoming freshman linebacker Ruben Narcisse, who was killed this week in a traffic accident.

The No. 5 Longhorns hosts the Cowboys on Saturday in Austin.

Texas coach Mack Brown says the tribute will include a moment of silence and Narcisse’s photograph on Texas’ massive scoreboard video screen. The Texas band will also play a song for the Wyoming team.

Narcisse, who was from Miami, died Monday night in Colorado. Three other Wyoming players were injured in the accident.

BSU is in a good position now. They have a bye week to heal any minor injuries and work on all of their mistakes from their opener. Wyoming has to play at Texas this week and then plays BSU next week. That is a tough 2-game stretch for Wyoming and will wear down Wyoming’s players.

Bad news about RGM–his CFL team doesn’t want to sign him now, so he might end up having to sit out of football this season.

Receiver-returner Ryan Grice-Mullen, another Dolphin camper let go in August, doesn’t figure in Buono’s plans at this point. “We don’t need a returner

So did the clarification of the hit get settled yet? I think it was a solid hit although the USC guy did through his forearm to Moniz’s helmet and lay him out. Anyway, pau already so on to the Soldier boys. Regardless who gets the start at QB, that horrendous defensive effort needs to correct itself a full 180 for this game. Our boys need to stop the run and pound all game.

  185. tommui September 8, 2010 5:11 pm

GARRET: Your #36. There is a big Hawaii get together in Colorado – coincidence that it is the same time as the UH-Colorado game. The marketing people were not going to be there peddling the UH stuff until they were virtually hit over the head with a 2×4 by a persistent UH alum!

The trouble with the people in charge is that they think as island people, that there are no opportunities beyond the shoreline.

Shute as much as I dislike Boise State, you cannot do nothing but show respect for that team. They are very well coached and are always clutch. Very disciplined on and off the field and handle themselves well. Coach Petersen has got to be one of the best if not the best college head football coach right now. I don’t know what it is about them but honestly they play like a Top 25 powerhouse team year in and year out! I wish our Warrior boys can reach that status too, but we’ll see…

  191. Garret September 8, 2010 5:18 pm

    tommui,

I’m glad that things will work out in Colorado, but it is sad that marketing opportunities like that are probably lost all the time. I know of 2 groups that have tried to do things to organize and utilize mainland Warrior fans to help UHAD ($$$, publicity, and outreach to gather more fans) and both have been extremely frustrated by the lack of response by UH.

  192. Garret September 8, 2010 5:21 pm

The LA Times is giving the WAC a good amount of respect.

Last weekend, Fresno State pummeled Cincinnati, the two-time defending Big East champion.

Boise State, on the road, defeated the defending Atlantic Coast champion.

Hawaii amassed 588 yards against USC — considered by many “the” team of the last decade.

Utah State went to Norman and nearly shocked Oklahoma.

If Boise State keeps winning, come Thanksgiving, your leftover turkey won’t be as picked over.

  193. Kekoa (iPhone) September 8, 2010 5:22 pm

PB ~ At the luncheon, it was clear that coach Rolo has a lot of confidence in his QB’s. He gave an example of how a smart call based on a quick assesment of the situation was made.

Btw, have you thought about trying for a walk on spot?

  194. Pauoa Boy September 8, 2010 5:22 pm

Alex Green is a beast and I think he is to Moniz what Nasti Nate was to Colt. To bad he is a Senior as I would love to see him pounding the ball a few more years. Anyway, I feel he could be our next thousand yard rusher this year…so long as Coach Rolo give um the ball!

    Pomai,

    UH 45-34

Hope the offense continues to blaze and the defense steps it up. I would think the Army game plan on offense is to run, run, run and eat up the clock. We’ve got to stop the run or it’ll be a long night. On defense, I would think that they’ll blitz significantly more than USC did in order to pressure the quarterback. They know USC couldn’t stop us if our QB had the time. So, I look for aggressive blitzing from Army.

  237. al September 8, 2010 9:51 pm

i thought that lacount did a good job once he got past the first two downs. on the first two plays after pepa went out, he had brush blocked the de only to have them blow by him. seemed he stopped blocking too early.. from the third play on he busted tail to maintain interference between he and the qb.

    Pride & al,

If our offense rolls, Rolo could easily be hot property. That’s why I mentioned earlier this year that it’s imperative that we groom Inoke as a QB coach. In the short run, Mouse could be da man. For now, we’ve got to lay the ground work and prep Inoke for that role.

Hard to say Al. While I thought that they did a very good job in the SC game, it’s stilll dificult to measure how good they are going to be. SC gave us a very vanilla front, didn’t play that many games. Brought four most of time and five a few times. While USC’s front seven was indeed athletic and talented, they didn’t play with very much intensity. USC wasn’t prepared for the game. They came in thinking that they were going to be in a scrimmage, and palyed that way. While I think that the offense will have a super year, and the line will be good, it will take a few games for them to come around. The line certainly has the potential to be one of the better lines in UH history, but that will need to be proven on the field.

You’re right Curt. However, I’d rather that be plan B. I still think that plan A should be to keep Rolo around. Having a potent offense that is entertaining is good not only for attendance, but also will give JD leverage when negoitaitng TV contracts. Other teams can just have real solid football teams. We need to be more than that. We also need to be very entertaining. We need to be able to attract TV viewers. We need to light up the scoreboard, and get the eastern part of the U.S. to turn on the television when we play.

I’m an optimist. I’m the one who guessed the scores for every game this season, and noted that if I were correct, we would ned up with a 12 and 1 record. Our only loss would be to USC. That, I think is very optimistic.

But it it’s not up to me or you. Players still gotta got out and play. No matter how optimistic or pessimistic that I am, it always depends on the players. They have to play. Do it right. Give 100%

  252. RedZone September 8, 2010 10:12 pm

Oline needs Pepa. Army has no one to match up with our slots. I was really sad when Ellerson left. I thought it was the beginning of the end. I knew he would end up as a head coach somewhere. He will be good for the academy.

DEs will need to step up their game against Army. Everyone saw the holes in our defense against USC. I don’t think they will be able to run inside against us.

When all fails go to the Polaris.

Absolutely agree. We’ve got to keep Rolo in the fold. That’s priority #1. Also agree that our Air Hawaii offense should be our trade mark. That’ll get us the viewership and visibility we once had. Nothing like leading the nation in scoring.

  255. Pride. September 8, 2010 10:14 pm

  256. al September 8, 2010 10:15 pm

we have three grad asst who focus on qb/wr’s and one grad asst aiding the defense.

mack is trying to be more of the man in the middle.

I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that.

    Pride,

Absolutely agree. We’ve got to keep Rolo in the fold. That’s priority #1. Also agree that our Air Hawaii offense should be our trade mark. That’ll get us the viewership and visibility we once had. Nothing like leading the nation in scoring.

That’s exactly what I wanted to say Curt. but you use bigger words. Viewership? visibility? trademark? I would never have come up with that. Thanks, sounds much better when you say it.

  260. al September 8, 2010 10:18 pm

i agree that usc came with a plain vanilla defense and rarely brought the blitz if at all. still, the oline did a credible job much to the surprise of many.

usc looked slow afoot in general, on defense that is.

i was shocked to see pilares out race the usc db’s on his three td jaunts. so he got faster, but, really that fast?

  261. al September 8, 2010 10:19 pm

thursday game was a pleasant experience for me. it reminded me of the old days when teams would roll in to hawaii expecting luaus, mai tais and wahine only to get a wake up call facing off with the home team.

  262. Pride. September 8, 2010 10:20 pm

Dive, QB, pitch. Tackle all of them. Every single one.

  263. Pride. September 8, 2010 10:23 pm

Al. I’m pretty sure that the USC defense doesn’t like football very much this week. After seeing those d-linemen with their hands on their knees on national TV. I’m sure Monte Kiffin was very embarrased and will make sure that his defense is never fatigued again this season. So you know what that means. Lots of very unhappy USC players this week.

  264. Pride. September 8, 2010 10:24 pm

What’s the remedy for a tired and fatigued defense?

  265. al September 8, 2010 10:25 pm

yup, assignment football is the key to defending the option. no matter who ends up with the ball the one guy we gotta take to the ground is that qb…mlb need go eat the fb.

What I want to know is why I ought to care? I mean, not to express that what youve got to say isnt crucial, but I mean, its so generic. Everyones referring to this man. Give us one thing a lot more, something that we can get behind so we can really feel as passionately about it as you do.

  268. al September 8, 2010 10:27 pm

  271. BG September 8, 2010 10:28 pm

I stopped by for a final post before going to bed.

I concur with you guys on Rolo and adding some thoughts. He is a special talent at understanding the RnS and being able to coach it…not always the same thing…as well as naturally being able to connect with players and get their best effort. These thoughts popped into my mind as I listened to his presentation at the Na Koa luncheon. Very special guy.

Rolo went on at length about his relationship with Mouse. Looks like its going to be extremely beneficial to Nick’s development. I believe that it’ll take a couple of years for people to really recognize his abilities…first year to take notice and the second year to confirm that he’s not a flash in the pan. Presently, there are very few schools that run the RnS. The present fad is the spread option. My most reasonable scenario is June retiring from SMU is 3 years and giving Rolo his #1 recommendation to be the OC.

Finally, if things don’t go right in the pros, do you think Colt would like to be in Hawaii?

  272. al September 8, 2010 10:29 pm

i think they attributed many a lknee injury to duck walks and shoulder tears to brear crawls.

  273. RedZone September 8, 2010 10:32 pm

  275. BG September 8, 2010 10:33 pm

al, duck walks definitely not good for the knees. If strong knees, not too bad. But any weakness/defect, well, duck walks will do you in.

  276. al September 8, 2010 10:34 pm

  284. RedZone September 8, 2010 10:38 pm

My biggest surprise came in the 2nd quarter. I was looking at some of the USC players and was thinking they can’t be that tired already?

I wonder if Ellerson is going to show the blitz early in the game? Rushing 4 is not going to do it for Army. In a game like this I would not be surprised to see Mana get an interception.

  285. al September 8, 2010 10:39 pm

our de’s were getting the worst of it on thursday. quite often the otackles had them falling towards the dtackles. in other words they were out quicked to the perimeter by the otackles and knocked up or down.

it is time for them to make a statement that they own outside. if that doesn’t improve we’ll see paipai back on the outside. our de’s need to play like wildmen, caged animals let out for the first time.

our dlinemen should take a look at how levi stanley, the nogas, the laboys, played with a controlled reckless abandom.

  286. RedZone September 8, 2010 10:41 pm

  287. al September 8, 2010 10:43 pm

bg…and yet, jj would love to end his career going barefooted on the grass practice field in the quarry.

  288. al September 8, 2010 10:47 pm

i am sure that the crafty ellerson did get game film from his buddy niumatololo. methinks that a blitzing army defense will be the plan of action.

i hope we are tuning up our short game in preparation. hopefully, our counter will be to let the running backs run wild often enough with a lot of quick look passing. then when army has had enough and peel back the blitz we’ll show them the long ball.

  289. al September 8, 2010 10:49 pm

Not sure if we need to wait until the guys learn the defense, or if the defense needs to be simplified so that our guys can play with confidence, and wreckless abandon. I’m sure that the defensive coaches have it all under control.

  302. al September 8, 2010 11:28 pm

Football is known to be a game of inches. An inch here and an inch there, and the results of a game are way different.

Overcoming those lost inches comes from paying attention to details. That’s the difference between a team Boise State and everyone else. Hawaii is always in position to beat Boise State if the players can take care of the details.

    UMSA Bow Fan

I made it to your side of the world. Please contact me and I will make sure that you have the opportunity to meet up with UH Legacy players.

    Tom Mui and Garrett

It was a little bit bigger than a 2×4. Opportunities exist on the road and Colorado is one of them. 30k coming into Boulder for aloha fest (3 days), ho’ike on Friday night, tailgates, post game receptions, and all looking for UH wear and we were not going to have a presence??

We have 10+ legacy players coming in to West Point for the game and another 8+ coming into Boulder. Former players were seen in abundance on the telethon. They have been contacted for communication purposes, not for solicitations, and they are starting to feel wlecomed back to UH after so long a time of no communications/no recognition/

There are so many UH supporters on the mainland that feel disenfranchised. After reading the blogs and many of the e-mails it seems as though it is now up to the UH Letterwinners to lead a movement to connect the fans and supporters through a program sanctioned by UH (in some way yet to be discussed/formulated).

Mahalo for Richard McEntee who is arranging a flag exchange between the Chancellors representing both Universities as well as our Colorado contact Tammie Chamillon who put us into the ho’ike and recommended post game sites.

    Pomai

I promise to get the account name changed upon my return. It was a bit hectic with USC in town and then flying out the next day.

I look forward to resuming retirement on 09.30.2010 in beautiful Kailua.

  318. don weir September 9, 2010 4:46 am

    BTW

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Carl Clapp since recnonecting with UH through Letterwinners et al.

    My take on Carl Clapp

    1. Honest and up front

    2. Knows the rules

    3. Sees the problems as they come up

4 Takes action or recommends action as needed

    5. Does not take advantage of his position

  321. Garret September 9, 2010 5:13 am

    Don Weir,

I know that part of your new duties is to reconnect with former UH players and that is a very, very important thing to do! Welcoming the men and women who played for UH should have been something that UH was doing all along, but fixing things now is better than later.

Hopefully everything goes well on your trip.

  322. Garret September 9, 2010 5:15 am

Maybe part of the reason that the SEC gets so much TV money is that the people in the south are just fanatical about football. Population and TV markets don’t mean much if the people don’t care about their local teams…like the Bay Area and SJSU.

One interesting data point is that the TV market with the highest percentage of TV viewers watching the BSU-Virginia Tech game was not in Idaho or Virginia…it was in Birmingham, Alabama!

the rewards years later after it is all done the Hawaii athletic OHANA is waiting

for you to EMBRACE your wonderful face and share the GREATNESS of their

    re: QBs

I really do not see the need for Moniz to start the Army game when he got his bell rung like that. I think it’s stupid to rush him back and I’d like to see the back-ups have some PT in this game. I’m not jumping off Moniz’ bandwagon in any way, shape or form; I’m one of his biggest fans. He should be kept out as a precautionary measure. I honestly hoped Austin would have the chance to start; anybody who looks that razor-sharp while only taking mental reps deserves an extended look. Query to those who viewed Fall Camp: did you agree with the coaches in having Rausch leapfrog Austin as the primary back-up? Did he play that impressively during those practices? During the Spring, Rausch wasn’t even close to pushing Austin from what I could see; did not see any of the Fall practices, however.

I agree that we lost that battle on the end. A strategy might have been to line up wider to draw the OT out and maybe ‘juke’ to the inside. Someone told ‘me’ it’s all about the hips….speed, power, tenacity….3 required ingredients for success as aDE.

Noga, Laboy, Stanley, all former great Warriors, how about having a closed door session with the current DL? or has the game evolved too far from their day? I don’t think so….. Just a thought…

  342. Buffoman September 9, 2010 7:05 am

I am and have been critical of our defense and special teams. Okay, it’s a new season and they did not raise the bar in the first game. Pundits say the biggest improvements are between the first and second games. I’ll reserve my comments.

I do not believe that the second game would be a true indication that would foretell the rest of the seasons fortunes in the two areas of concern. Take nothing away from Army but it’s like preparing for a “gadget” offense and one that would not be replicated in the remainder of the season. The real test will be in game 3, against Colorado.

If there is no marked improvement, I would hope that on a scale larger than what Bulla (#332) suggests Coach Mac would swallow some pride and arrange a sit down amongst himself and Aranda with coach Tomey to see what a different set of defensive could offer in the way of improving what would not (if there is no marked improvement) seem to be working at the moment. Coach Mac says he has the players, if they are not performing, it has to be something else since the talent appears to be there.

    I’ll end with a line from #332, I don’t think so…Just a thought…

  350. Cat Tattoos September 9, 2010 7:50 pm

Do you think people are getting tattoos without having any idea what they mean. Or why they wanted it. My nephew explained to me that he got a full sleeve tattoo because he thought it would be cool. He is old enough to have a tatoo and had the money to pay for it. So everything was legit except for his reason. I have tats but they all have meaning and I had to earn the priveldge of wearing them. What’s you take on people getting tats for no reason.

.. This information is really good and I will say will always be helpful if we try it risk free… So if you can back it up .. That will really help us all. And this might bring some good repute to you. The diet of human beings prior to the arrival of agriculture, technology and civilization is known as the Paleolithic Diet ! This Stone Age diet, in short, consisted of mainly lean red meat and vegetables. In this type of diet animal meat is consumed in large quantities and 45 to 65% of the energy needed by the body is derived from it. Over and over again, life expectancy studies related to diet, including by the World Health Organization (WHO), have concluded that Americans and Europeans would do better to eat more like third world peoples as the options provided by their additional wealth have most often lead to poor nutritional choices. This is the same basis for the USDA based their popular food pyramid in 1994 .. Researchers at Harvard have only suggested perhaps tweaking the food pyramid by replacing some dairy products and read meat with more fruits, vegetables, and fish while also emphasizing the importance of improving the ratio of “good” to “bad” cholesterol? Plus, exercise not only makes weight loss much easier, but also lowers blood glucose levels, decreases blood pressure, improved circulation, and increases one’s metabolism. Good regular sleep patterns are also just as important. Diets based on USDA recommendations include DASH, American Diabetic Assoc, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig? When children understand how important “real food” is and where the natural ingredients of our food come from, they will increase the general population’s appreciation for preserving our natural environment and limiting toxins and polluting processes in our world. We may even trend back to the time when people stepped outside their homes to interact with family and neighbors in home and community gardens and block-party barbeques… Does anybody even remember how nice those days were?

  502. Marizhkamasha September 24, 2010 6:08 pm

No indicator will work on it’s own, you have to combine them with others to build a complete trading system. I suggest to learn more about trendlines, candlestick patterns and the different technical indicators and what they can do for you. Or you could invest some money in a trading system to get you started. The choice is up to you.

Good day, I’m a college English major and I’m learning a lot about writing by reading blogs. I really like your style of writing. It’s easy to understand but with great details. Your choice of words makes it fun to read and understand. That’s a huge portion of writing. Your readers have to be able to understand what you’re saying and the publication has to be engaging. You need to engage your readers, so they will come back for more. You do a great job with all of these aspects. Thanks a bunch!
