Want to be a Warrior? … Dee joins the A list

Want to be a Warrior?

The UH football team is conducting a tryout Jan. 20 at the UH athletic complex. If you’re interested, call Rich Miano at 956-4516 or e-mail: miano@hawaii.edu.

The Rainbow Wahine softball team has promoted Dee Wisneski to associate head coach.

Kaulana (Gould) Williams has been added as the Rainbows’ assistant coach. Her husband, Chris Williams, is UH’s video coordinator and a former Warrior linebacker.

Dickie Titcomb, who helped build the Rainbows’ clubhouse in their stadium, will serve as volunteer assistant coach.

Back from furloughs, a crew prepared to place an H logo on the entrypath to the coaches’ offices.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Eddie Hamada. He was a great coach and an even better person.

* * * * *

It appears former Kapolei High offensive lineman Stan Hasiak is returning to UCLA. He is expected to receive a medical hardship for the 2009 season. There had been rumors swirling  that he would transfer.

Our boss, Curtis Murayama, treated the staff to lunch at Happy Day Chinese Restaurant in Kaimuki.

    aloja everyone

first my deepest condolence to the Hamada family on the passing of a really great person….Mr. Iolani Eddie Hamada. I have known him from the 70’s and through the 80’s. He was not only a professional person to coach against but also a kind soul to be associated with. He will be sorely missed not only my Iolani but by all who knew him.

  10. SteveM January 4, 2010 9:35 am

Although I would like to be a Warrior, I’m about 38 years too old, about a hundred pounds of muscle lacking, my time in the 40s would be in double digits and my vertical is about 20 inches at best. I don’t think Coach Miano is interested at present.LOL

  16. A-House January 4, 2010 10:38 am

Congratulations to Dee and Kaulana on their promotions for the Wahine Softball team!

I want to try out. I run a 4.ever 40 and can bench press 25 pounds nine times which adds up to 225. But then I would have to enroll. Never mind.

  22. DoubleB January 4, 2010 11:09 am

You probably would not make the academic requirements…that would be 25 lbs 10 times 🙂

  26. chopsueyboy January 4, 2010 12:28 pm

If Shanahan is Washington’s new coach,
is that a good thing for Colt?

  27. d1島 January 4, 2010 1:11 pm

    Hmmmm…..

Can things really be that great for Hasiak to return to LA?

  28. Derek January 4, 2010 1:13 pm

What is the medical reason for Hasiak to get a medical redshirt. I thought he left the team or get suspended because he always got into fights with his teammate(s) in practice and had a tough time controlling his temper. That to me is not a medical reason. There’s got to be something else.

To Crabb, good luck to him at Colorado. We’ll see him in Boulder when the Warriors kick their butt in September!!!! Maybe. Who ellse, oh Taz Stevenson, good luck to him. We’ll kick his butt in Seattle in 2011 in September….unless the new Montana lights us up!!!

  29. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2010 1:15 pm

Not sure what the medical reason is.
I do know things apparently have worked out.

  30. A-House January 4, 2010 1:16 pm

    d1:

Heard that he will replace the “starting” OL who will be going on a Mormon mission this year.

Source says that he was confident the Hasiak would return to UCLA.

  31. A-House January 4, 2010 1:18 pm

    ST:

With the recent commits to mainland schools, does that mean the Warriors will have “additional” scholarships to offer?

    Thanks, Stretch!

  34. al January 4, 2010 1:27 pm

ahouse…i don’t believe that the coaches were counting on crabb to stay home anyway.

hasiak going back to ucla is no surprise either.

so we are still looking at the same prospects for 2010.
    a safety
    another corner
    a running back
    a mlb
    more olinemen.
and of course what would you do if the next colt brennan knocks on your door.

  35. NoPuInSai January 4, 2010 1:28 pm

Commentators on Sportscenter talking about Redskins drafting Bradford…

  37. al January 4, 2010 1:33 pm

    stretch…funny that video.

and i am still upset that my prediction did in fact come to fruition.
    tcu vs bsu

the bcs did the obvious slight to the rest of the non-bcs world as expected. they did not want the risk of three non-bcs teams beating up on their own kind.

and if i were the sugar bowl folks i’d seriously be a bit perturbed as their bowl game has now become the non-bcs bcs bowl.

  38. madeinhawaii January 4, 2010 1:38 pm

maybe it was a psychological disorder…

  39. protector January 4, 2010 2:18 pm

    madeinhawaii and chopsueyboy,

At least I would have ‘eligibility’ as I never played any sports (Varsity or JV)
when I attended UH way back when. Would that mean I have 5 to play 4? Nyuk, nyuk!

    chopsueyboy on # 26,

I’ve said it several times on the blog that my theory is that it could be the best thing to happen to Colt because Shanahan is NOT a stupid coach + they have a year to evaluate whether to keep him or not. I think they only have to pay him 400 thou this coming year. Shanahan was a West Coast guy and there’s no way IMO that Campbell or Collins would beat out Colt in that kind of Offense. Does anyone know what Offense Shanahan’s son runs at Houston (as OC)? I understand Shanahan’s son may join him at the Redskins.
If he is going to be the OC at Washington under his dad, he may have carte blanche & if it’s not a West Coast type of offense, it all goes out the window. I just hope they don’t waste the first round pick on some big-name college QB & feel obligated to play him. That would suck.

  40. chawan_cut January 4, 2010 2:18 pm

    GO TCU HORNY TOADS!!!

  41. cavewarrior January 4, 2010 2:19 pm

Anyone else notice HA gave “Ferd” a facial for the new year…it’s shown in morning edition.

  42. chawan_cut January 4, 2010 2:31 pm

    I’ll always be a Warrior at heart….
    everyone now, awww……

  43. protector January 4, 2010 2:37 pm

    NoPuinSai on # 35,

I have a comment on the Redskins drafting Bradford: Arrgghhh! That development, even if Shanahan is a smart coach, would probably mean that Colt would get short shrift. Then our only hope would be that somebody from the Buffalo Bills or Jets (although they seem committed to that over-rated Sanchez) or Browns or somebody would recognize Colt’s potential & call to make a deal. I don’t think they would need to offer much. It still galls me that with all these supposedly smart coaches & GMs that they could think that there are 50-70 better QBs than Colt out there. But to quote Forrest Gump: “Stupid is as Stupid does, I always say”.

  44. Bulla January 4, 2010 2:40 pm

    good luck to Hasiak,

hope it all works out for him; medical hardship, hmmmmmm, did he participate in more than 3 games? isn’t that the cutoff ST for qualifying for a decision.

Crabb kid has good size, they are going to RS him and have him fill out more and get used to the system.

    16 days and counting………………….

  45. protector January 4, 2010 2:45 pm

Although the smart money will probably be on TCU, I have to hope that Boise State is competitive or the WAC will get another black-eye. If Boise can pull it out, it’ll open a lot of eyes! But then again, who am I kidding? They (BCS bigots) would say that TCU was over-rated. None of them ever really gave Boise State credit for doing a number on Oregon at the beginning of the season. I hope they crush the Horny Toads!

  46. HiFlyer January 4, 2010 3:06 pm

Boise wearing a uniform combo that I haven’t seen before, white jersey and orange pants.

  47. Pride. January 4, 2010 3:09 pm

Looking forward to the next few years to see how Bruce Allen does with the Redskins. Bruce is a frequent visitor to Hawaii to visit one of his best friends. Bruce’s friend called him during the NFL draft in 1998 and told him that they needed to draft Henry Kreutz’s son out of U-Dub. When Oakland’s third round pick came up at #62, they ended up taking Jon Ritchie, a fullback out of Stanford. Chicago ended up taking Olin Kreutz at #63 and of course the rest is history. While Richie ended up playing seven decent years in the NFL, I think the fact that he missed out on Kreutz was a big mistake. Hopefully those mistakes are a thing of the past.

  48. Pride. January 4, 2010 3:15 pm

Perhaps Craig Stutzman could go to the Redskins as an intern or quality control guy, maybe even a scout.

Then someday, fifteen years from now we’ll be talking about Stutz taking over football operations for some NFL team.

By the way, I wonder if ex-Hawaii offensive guard Greg McElroy is still with the Cowboys?

  49. d1島 January 4, 2010 3:22 pm

    Hmmmm…

maybe the door man should give Miano a call? 😉

  53. madeinhawaii January 4, 2010 3:53 pm

If TCU is as close to the RnS as we will see in a BCS bowl, you gotta want to see them win against Boise just to add more credence to the RnS or 4 wide offense. Considering the caliber of athletes that TCU recruits, 3-5 star, if they can’t beat Boise with their brand of a passing offense… can our Warriors?

  54. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2010 3:55 pm

I think Shanahan is a good fit for Colt.
Shanahan runs the West Coast Offense.
Shanahan worked with Pat Bowlen, who is a part-time Hawaii resident and June Jones’ friend.

  55. al January 4, 2010 4:14 pm

colt needs to be healthy and ready to go next year, it’s his money year.
he has to prove that he can make it in the pro’s or he could end up lost and soon forgotten.

davonne is going to make a lot of money after his three year deal is up. the one production that needs to increase next year is the number of times he scores.

  56. d1島 January 4, 2010 4:23 pm

    mih,

It appears that TCU would prefer to be more of a read option offense than RnS. Their QB comes into the game with over 500 rushing yards. If they use sight-adjusted routes along with that kind of running game, they would be pretty unique!

  57. Da Punchbowl Kid January 4, 2010 4:25 pm

  98. will-i-am January 4, 2010 6:38 pm

    Thank you Boise State!!

  99. d1島 January 4, 2010 6:39 pm

    NYUH,

I think the $ is the same W or L.

  100. whitey January 4, 2010 6:40 pm

it is going to be a great 2010 season for the Warriors. right now, they will have 1 top 10 team, another in the top 20 and will have one of their best fb schedules in many moons. now to see if this gives the rest of the country’s recruits sum ammo to join a WAC team.

  101. Ralph January 4, 2010 6:41 pm

UH gets a share of BSU and TCU because all of the non BCS teams get a share. UH get more from BSU, same conference, but TCU contributes a specific amount to be shared among all the other conferences. The sharing probably falls in the gray area, non expected two non BCS to be playing in a BCS bowl game.

  102. Slugger January 4, 2010 6:42 pm

Congratulations to Dee & Kaulana, and Mahalo to DickieT.!

Wish our defense could come up with some of the interceptions like BSU. I know they can do it!

  103. cavewarrior January 4, 2010 6:42 pm

terrific win for bsu and wac….guess we’ll never know how they would do against SEC top teams since no one will play’um.. we know how Cincy did tho…and the ’07 Warriors..

  104. d1島 January 4, 2010 6:43 pm

    K-den…Tank, eh to TCU2!

  105. Slugger January 4, 2010 6:44 pm

Sorry to hear about Coach Hamada.

  106. Derek January 4, 2010 6:45 pm

Broncos stomp all over Horned Frogs. Boise St. is really, really good.
Heck, TCU is really, really good too. UH is not even in their class. UH will not beat Boise St. in the forseeable future, as long as Peterson is still there. The situational play calling for Boise is out of this world. And the execution, unbelievable. But what is most impressive is their defense. It’s their defense is really wins their championships and why they have been unbeaten so often. Impressive to say the least. I didn’t go to Boise St., but I did go there as a visitor on vacation whle I was in college. For a school from Idaho, to be that good they will probably finish 2 or 3 in the final poll. Good for the WAC.

  107. whitey January 4, 2010 6:47 pm

if this don’t give the Warriors incentive to get in shape and take care of academia, we will remain an average team. taking care of business starts tomorrow and not next month. this is especially true for our coaching staff, get all of your act together and be one.

  108. Willie January 4, 2010 6:48 pm

Great news for the WAC with the Broncos win, just hope they don’t jump ship to the MWC.

Anyone else catch the starting line up graphics, just want to make sure of what I saw. Both TCU & BSU look set for awhile. TCU listed 5 seniors starting on both sides of the ball and BSU only 1, yes this one I am pretty sure of.

Garret, I am with you on Kellen Moore. How could only he have gotten 2 offers and only one of them a D1. He’s not only got the physical tools, da buggah is really akamai football wise.

  109. whitey January 4, 2010 6:50 pm

Warriors, your 2010 season starts tomorrow. no prima donnas and excuses!!!!

  110. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 4, 2010 6:52 pm

fun game to watch….and to think basically everyone from BSU is returning next year is amaaaaazing and quite disheartening seeing we play them @ Boise. 🙁

Their schedule and pre-season ranking should make them a viable candidate for a National Championship invite should they go undefeated….again

My hope is that one day Hawaii will be at what seems to be such a consistent level of making the most out of so little, great coaching, and great recruiting. I think we are quite far from where Boise is right now but someday soon it will be a reality and it’ll be Hawaii playing in big name bowls.

  111. whitey January 4, 2010 6:53 pm

hard to picture BSU going to the MWC cause this could really hurt their chances of going to future big games, but then again with a weak WAC commissioner, this is no guarantee of BSU jumping ship.

  112. d1島 January 4, 2010 6:55 pm

    Willie,

They mentioned that during the game….Moore is 6-0, 187. Peterson no look at measurables…look at performance.

  113. whitey January 4, 2010 6:55 pm

espn has too many announcers with ohio state ties. wouldn’t be bad if they talked about fb objectively, but they always want to slide in something about the “small” 10 or ohio state.

  114. d1島 January 4, 2010 7:00 pm

They played one Pac-10 team, 3 MAC/C-USA teams and a FBS team, dominated the WAC and still got to a BCS game.

Why would B$-You want to battle thru the MWC every season? Would the MWC champion ever make it to the NC game?

No seem like a good risk/reward payoff to me….

  115. d1島 January 4, 2010 7:07 pm

What would Boise have to gain by leaving. They are conference champs every year. They get to play in the top bowl games.

If they leave to a better conference would they reap as many rewards?

  120. d1島 January 4, 2010 7:27 pm

    will-i-am,

    Good point.

  121. Willie January 4, 2010 7:45 pm

Got it d1 on Moore, with that height & weight it does shed more light about the lack of offers. If he is only 187 now I wonder what he was coming out of HS? He is a redshirt soph so he did have time to put on some muscle. Garret did mention he was a 4star out of HS, but then again how reliable is the star factor potential versus how they turn out when the lights go on.

  122. Ralph January 4, 2010 7:49 pm

after watching a great football game, I just finished watching the first half of UH mbb, what a downer. can’t attack a zone defense, can’t shoot from outside, can’t handle the ball, but we’re only down by 1.

  126. Garret January 4, 2010 8:06 pm

That call on the fake punt won the game for BSU. Such perfect execution and such a daring gamble by BSU…wow. If BSU’s punter had thrown the ball poorly, TCU would have been in FG range already and the whole game could have ended differently.

Petersen showed once again that he’s not afraid to gamble and to throw in trick plays. Kudos to their team for another BCS bowl win.

  127. Ralph January 4, 2010 8:07 pm

  128. al January 4, 2010 8:13 pm

if you were the coach and you were in control with a 7-9pt lead.
then all of a sudden the opponent goes on a 12-0 run.

at what point would you have called a timeout?
or would you have done nothing at all?

  129. Garret January 4, 2010 8:14 pm

    d1shima,

One thing to take into consideration is that the WAC capped the money going to the team playing in the BCS game at $3 million. Remember, there are HUGE costs for teams playing in BCS games–required to send the band, cheerleaders, have the team stay for 5 days, etc. So, a WAC team much not make much from going to a BCS game…the $3 million cap basically means that UH (which has much higher flight costs than other schools) might just break even when going to a BCS bowl!

The big money does NOT come from the BCS bowl payout. The big money comes from the regular season TV contract and the NCAA men’s basketball money. The WAC is far, far below the MWC in both of those revenue streams.

The big expenses come from travel costs. The WAC has UH and La Tech and a bunch of spread out teams. Those travel costs would be much, much lower for BSU in the MWC.

We can be big homers and point out all the reasons why BSU would not want to leave the WAC. But the facts show why they have been begging the MWC every year…and that was before the WAC cut the incentive for going to a BCS bowl by $1.5 million (UH got $4.5 million for the Sugar Bowl, BSU is getting $3 million this year). TCU will be getting a MUCH bigger check than BSU for the Fiesta Bowl…and I’m sure that BSU has noticed that.

    evening all

I had mixed 😕 feeling while watching the game between the broncos and horn frogs. don’t really care for boise and still have a sour 😡 sport for the mwc. only positive is UH will benefit $ from the win. congrats to boise for the win anyway.

having the same thoughts as ralph about the bball team but got to remind myself its not how you start off but how you end up and UH is starting to pick it up a bit.

late congrats to wanfan on winning the colt auto pic. have a good second
    semester buddy.

again my condolences to the Hamada ohana, a truly good guy

  131. al January 4, 2010 8:15 pm

  132. d1島 January 4, 2010 8:15 pm

‘Bows up by 7 as they head into the “4th quarter”

  133. Garret January 4, 2010 8:17 pm

I was cheering for BSU in the game today, the first time I *ever* cheered for BSU. If TCU won, the MWC would have gone 5-0 in bowl games this year and the WAC would have gone 1-3…and we would have heard about that all offseason when they put down the WAC. The WAC went 1-4 in bowl games last year, which would have been pointed out too.

So, I’m glad that Idaho and BSU made the WAC go 2-2 in bowl games this year. BSU will start the year ranked extremely high and they have just about their entire team coming back with a lot of young players looking to break into their depth chart.

  134. d1島 January 4, 2010 8:18 pm

    Garret,

The other side though is what does MWC gain from Boise?

    Fresno! 😛

  135. Garret January 4, 2010 8:18 pm

    koakane,

UH would get the same amount of money whether or not BSU won today. None of the bowl games pay more to the winning team, even the national championship game.

  136. whitey January 4, 2010 8:20 pm

    good one, al. hahahahaaa

  137. whitey January 4, 2010 8:22 pm

    d1, you forgot the commish!!!!

  138. Garret January 4, 2010 8:23 pm

    d1shima,

The BCS contract specifies that *7* Conferences can have AQ status and only 6 teams have automatic qualifiers right now. The MWC clearly hopes to get the final spot.

The formula for AQ status for the BCS is set, and this website crunched the numbers and found that the MWC would *not* be at the level of a BCS AQ conference with their current teams. However, if they add BSU they *would* easily be above the requirement for AQ status.

It isn’t hard to read between the lines to see why the MWC would want BSU. The interesting thing is that the records and rankings fed into the BCS formula includes the next 2 seasons. So, the MWC would be better off having BSU keep winning games in the WAC to increase their win/loss percentage to help their BCS qualification.

  139. Garret January 4, 2010 8:26 pm

I really think poorly about the Big East, but I was surprised to note that they went 4-2 in bowl games this year and 4-2 last year also.

The Pac-10 struggled at 2-5 this year, but they went 5-0 in bowl games last year.

  140. Garret January 4, 2010 8:28 pm

This TCU fan was celebrating that his wedding was called off so that he could go to the Fiesta Bowl…I wonder how he feels about that now.

  141. al January 4, 2010 8:31 pm

    mayen!

  142. Garret January 4, 2010 8:32 pm

I hadn’t realized that the bottom of each conference brings down the conference average so much in the formula to figure out which conferences should get AQ status. The bottom of the MWC is the reason why they need BSU if they want that final BCS AQ spot.

I also hadn’t realized that part of the formula to determine which teams get AQ spots in the BCS was where their highest ranked team was at the end of the season. BSU’s win knocks down TCU’s ranking and hurts the MWC’s points for the BCS…unless they add BSU.

  143. Garret January 4, 2010 8:38 pm

One thing for sure about all this Texas Tech controversy is that there will be a LOT of attention paid to their season opener under their new coach. That will be at home for them and it will be interesting to see how their fans react after this controversy and the calls for boycotts…though I don’t think anyone will give up their tickets.

Texas Tech’s opponent for their season opener? SMU.

  144. will-i-am January 4, 2010 8:39 pm

So the WAC should get rid of La Tech, I don’t think anyone would argue with that. Even LA Tech would be happy. their travel expenses must be huge.

  145. al January 4, 2010 8:39 pm

play smart and we can win.

  146. al January 4, 2010 8:42 pm

these refs…do they think that this is the boise state football team?
somebody tell em its basketball so need “juice” the calls.

  147. whitey January 4, 2010 8:43 pm

the commish’s office should also look at future bowls for the WAC and at the same time, do not subsidize game tickets, but penalize teams like UNR by not giving them money from the WAC pot.

  148. will-i-am January 4, 2010 8:50 pm

    I just emailed the commissioner.

I am a Hawaii fan and we should not be getting as much money as we do for Boise winning the WAC. Boise should keep most of their money.

Taking the money from a winning team and giving it to losing teams only makes the winning team look for greener pastures.

    here is his emailing list.

    kbenson@wac.org

  149. Garret January 4, 2010 8:52 pm

    will-i-am,

Yes, getting rid of La Tech would be great for the rest of the WAC, especially in saving travel costs. Sending the soccer team or women’s basketball team to Ruston is a huge money loser that no school wants in this economy. Trouble is, travel costs might be higher for teams to go to UH so we can’t point fingers too hard at La Tech. Many WAC teams would be happy to get rid of *both* UH and La Tech.

La Tech would probably leave if an attractive conference invited them…but nobody seems to want them. If La Tech goes elsewhere when the conferences realign in a few years that would be good for the WAC…unless the WAC loses too many teams (say BSU and a few others leave) and the entire conference has to fold.

  150. Garret January 4, 2010 8:59 pm

I also didn’t realize (until I read that article I linked above) that if too many WAC teams leave then the WAC will lose its automatic bid to the men’s NCAA basketball tournament. That would make it really, really hard for the WAC to attract replacement teams.

The 5/6/7 rule dictates that to get that bid a conference has to have six “core” DI member schools who have played together for five years plus a seventh core member of DI.

  151. will-i-am January 4, 2010 9:01 pm

I can see that Hawaii is an expensive trip for WAC teams but it is the “Western Athletic Conference”. What other conference options does Hawaii have logically. I am sure La Tech would fit in better with lots of other conferences.

  152. Garret January 4, 2010 9:01 pm

The 5/6/7 rule also means that all of those “wish-list” ideas that have been posted over the years to combine the best of the MWC and WAC would actually never be able to happen because the resulting conference would not get a bid to the NCAA basketball tournament.

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 4, 2010 9:01 pm

BSU would gain a ton to get into the MWC *IF* it meant the MWC becomes a BCS conference.

    More $$$ and more prestige.

If BSU is content with what they are doing as WAC champions and have found that “formula” to get into a big game every few years then maybe that’s a reason to stay…….Then again you don’t find any mid-level BCS schools like an Auburn, Cal, Okla St. etc etc screaming and shouting to get into Conf-USA or MAC or Sunbelt or something just because they could basically destroy everyone in it and take the title every year.

Stay with the WAC: No guarantee to a BCS bowl game, marginal marketing money (tv etc)…4 auto-bowl tie-ins

Go with a new *BCS-MWC*:: Guarantee of a BCS bowl game to conference winner, higher BCS payout, larger marketing revenue, 5 bowl tie-in with 1 BCS tie-in = 6 TOTAL bowl tie-in.

Stay with the WAC and unless you go BCS bowling then you are left with crumbs for bowl games….with the MWC even if you don’t win the conference title you feast like a king on several other bowl options and higher payouts.

  154. Garret January 4, 2010 9:06 pm

    will-i-am,

La Tech was the only WAC team in the Southwest that was left out of the conference realignment when TCU/UTEP/SMU/etc. left. The other conferences didn’t want them then, and they don’t have the TV market or football and men’s basketball success to attract a conference now.

If the MWC doesn’t want UH (and travel costs to UH was one reason they left the WAC), then UH really has no other conference option. Going independent wouldn’t work because travel costs will keep teams away from UH…how would the nonrevenue teams like soccer get opponents?

Conferences seem to be moving towards a model of nonconference games being mostly in September and October/November being reserved for conference games…so UH could not go independent in football.

  155. koakane™ January 4, 2010 9:08 pm

just wondering why UH bballer’s after breaking the press don’t attack the basket instead of stoppping and look or going back to the half court. at least go for the points or get fouled trying to score.

ahhhhh at least they won which is the main thing. IMHO going on the road doesn’t look to bright for the bball warriors.

garret I guess its better than nothing

  156. Garret January 4, 2010 9:08 pm

Last year BSU went undefeated in the regular season and did NOT get into a BCS game.

This year BSU went undefeated and the WAC passed a new rule so they won’t make any money from their BCS game.

The argument that BSU would stay in the WAC to get to BCS games is fatally flawed.

  157. whitey January 4, 2010 9:14 pm

    I don’t think so

  158. d1島 January 4, 2010 9:14 pm

The Stanley is renamed New Hope Chapel for one night with a win by MBB.

Time to take the revival show on the road to Fresno and Logan….

  159. Garret January 4, 2010 9:16 pm

I’ll try to make my last post of the night a positive one for the WAC. There are two ways that UH could end up in a good position when the conferences have their merry-go-round in 2-3 years.

    1. The WAC could improve significantly. Idaho already made a huge jump this year and NMSU hired a good coach last year. This could convince BSU, Nevada, and Fresno State to stay instead of begging the MWC to take them. Unfortunately, conference improvement would require strong leadership and Karl Benson is not what I consider a dynamic leader.

    2. The Pac-10 could take BYU and Utah. If they want to go to 12 teams (possibly required under the next BCS agreement to have AQ status), then BYU/Utah are the only realistic fit for the Pac-10 (with Colorado/Colorado State also possible, but I don’t see Colorado leaving the Big 12). If BYU/Utah leave, then the MWC will be severely damaged and they will not be in a great bargaining position. That puts UH in a better position to get into the MWC or for the WAC to grab some of the MWC teams that are attractive (UNLV would be at the top of my list).

  160. d1島 January 4, 2010 9:16 pm

    Garret,

Sure hope things don’t turn to the WAC looking at teams like UL-Lafayette and No. Texas to stay alive. 🙄

    Anyhoo…

    time for sign off…

    Oyasumina-tsai.

  161. whitey January 4, 2010 9:16 pm

if the greatest money to the WAC comes from mbb, what does BSU bring to the MWC. a patsy who does not help the rpi, but drags it down like they are doing to the WAC. of course, uh is exactly up there either, but at least this yr, they are winning.

  162. whitey January 4, 2010 9:19 pm

    is = isn’t

  163. Garret January 4, 2010 9:23 pm

    koakane,

You know what is crazy? TCU is getting $9 million for the Fiesta Bowl and BSU is getting $4.5 million. They don’t keep that money–they get big chunk of it and their conferences split up most of the rest among their other teams. Sad to think that TCU gets so much more even though they lost the game.

The BCS contract apparently states that if 2 non-AQ teams make a BCS game, then the higher ranked team gets the full $9 million and the other team only gets $4.5 million. This is just like how the SEC gets only $4.5 million for their second team in a BCS game.

When Georgia played UH in the Sugar Bowl, the SEC got $4.5 million for Georgia being in a BCS bowl and UH earned $9 million…$6 million of the $9 million went to the WAC and the rest went to the other non-AQ conferences. So, UH made a *lot* more money from that Sugar Bowl than Georgia did.

  164. Garret January 4, 2010 9:24 pm

    whitey,

Didn’t BSU make the NCAA tournament 2 years ago? That brings money to a conference.

Okay, I really have to go now…

  165. jm2375 January 4, 2010 9:30 pm

Watching the basketball team is an exercise in frustration, even though they won tonight. They are so Jekyll-and-Hyde even within a game. At least they aren’t as bad as the Frank Arnold teams of the 80s who would be up by 15-20 pts and then lose by 20.

Colin Cowherd (sp?) was ranting the other week about the lack of leadership in the Pac-10 too. He was comparing the SEC bowl affiliations to the Pac-10’s. I kept thinking they should’ve kept the Hawaii Bowl affiliation. But, isn’t the Pac-10 commish one of dem guys against a play-off, cuz he has to keep his precious Rose Bowl.

  166. will-i-am January 4, 2010 9:36 pm

    Garrett,

I almost wish you never told me that.

  167. Garret January 4, 2010 9:42 pm

    jm2375,

The Hawaii Bowl pays the minimum of the bowl games. All of the Pac-10’s bowl games pays more than the Hawaii Bowl except for the Emerald Bowl that pays the same as the Hawaii Bowl. Given that travel costs are taken out of the bowl payout, the Pac-10 *lost* money going to the Hawaii Bowl and *makes* money going to all of their other bowl games.

Given that, why should the Pac-10 have kept the Hawaii Bowl? The Hawaii Bowl’s big problem is that they do not have a big $$$ sponsor and they pay the least of any bowl and have the highest travel costs. Unless the payout can be raised, the Hawaii Bowl will not be able to attract a conference like the Pac-10.

  168. Ralph January 4, 2010 10:19 pm

Whitey UH won tonight but they are not winning, they are 8-8 against mediocre opponents. check the real attendance, it’s about 2500 less than posted by UH on its website. UH is losing the revenue battle.

  169. al January 4, 2010 10:56 pm

    ralphie…play nice now.
the rainbow warriors are 8-7 and do possess a winning record.

  170. Ralph January 4, 2010 11:01 pm

really, I thought the loss to Idaho made it 7-8. prior to tonight they loss 3 of 4.

  171. Ralph January 4, 2010 11:09 pm

Al not that I didn’t trust or believe you but I had to go to the UH site to take a peek. They have played so bad, so poorly, it was hard for me to convince myself they have a winning record of 8-7, playing mostly cupcakes and looking bad. More importantly though, I hope JD is looking over the financial spreadsheet and looking for ways to cut mbb expenses knowing full well that revenue is down. Travel on the red eye, play the game on the same day, leave for the airport after the game to the next town or homeward bound.

  172. Ralph January 4, 2010 11:12 pm

Well on Wednesday, got to cheer on Charlie and Dana, big opening night for the mvb and wbb. Make us proud, play well, be competitive and the fans will come out. Play uninspiring like the mbb, watch the game on tv with the remote close by.

  173. protector January 4, 2010 11:17 pm

Although this basketball season may not be one of the most scintillating in history, it appears that one win this season has turned into a quality win. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the College of Charleston (that just upset the North Carolina Tarheels) the same team that UH beat in the Diamond Head Classic by about 13 points?

  174. Slugger January 4, 2010 11:34 pm

ralph….i really think that mvb will surprise many a team this year. not only will umlauft bring us up a notch, but, he will make the others better as well.

hopefully, rawson and grgas are healthy. eventually i also believe that hunt will be another terminator. the smurfs will also do better.

probably, the one thing that will be the most significant this year is that the starters can practice on what they need to improve upon during the sessions rather than worry about performing in practice to satisfy the “cauldron”.

  176. kokane™ January 5, 2010 12:00 am

not a big bball fan but watching the games the past two night something seems to be missing from this team. at times they don’t play well together, look frustrated, disorientated, easily gets beat and just don’t flow smoothly. this is at home can’t imagine what will happen on the road games.

don’t know what to make of cnash style of coaching. during the time out seems the players don’t respond to him

    what say you ralph

  177. al January 5, 2010 12:03 am

ralph…btw. wbb already had their home opener in november. a loss but the alleged attendance was equal to four games worth of last year’s numbers.

  178. al January 5, 2010 12:04 am

    eh, what’s a cnash?

  179. Ralph January 5, 2010 12:09 am

slugger that’s the whole point, attendance and revenue, I can be part of it if the team played good, sound basketball and were competitive against good competition. But going for the sake of going and proclaiming, I’m a fan, win or lose is purely bunk. There needs to be value, a losing NFL team like Oakland draws well because it is the NFL and there are many good teams and players to watch. It is worth watching, even if the cost is very high, people will pay to see them. UH on the other hand, mbb in particular, is poorly paid, no value in time and money to watch a bb ga,e for the sake of watching a bb game.

  180. Ralph January 5, 2010 12:10 am

    edit
    paid=played

  181. al January 5, 2010 12:14 am

did you notice how we didn’t do a great job against the press?

  182. Ralph January 5, 2010 12:16 am

Al edit, referring to WAC home opener where it counts. The Na Wahine only chance to crash the NCAA tournament is to win the WAC or WAC tournament outright and it will be doable in a couple of recruiting seasons. But Dana has to go overseas or to the mainland to recruit size and speed. Our local girls can play the game but they are short and quick but lack overall speed. You watch Kanekoa and Galdones, they have bb skills but lack the height and speed when playing higher caliber teams.

  183. Ralph January 5, 2010 12:20 am

Al press equals UH turnovers, zone equates to low scoring without an outside shot. Waiting for Lay and Williams to live up to hype, but they got to be consistent. too many wide swings on offense.

  184. Ralph January 5, 2010 12:23 am

mbb Fresno State and Utah State on the road. USU was favored but they lost this week or weekend.

Thanks for publishing about this. There’s a mass of good tech information on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your web site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs pretty on-going, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a solid job with this one. How do you do it?
