Walk to remember

The volleyball Warriors are planning to take a trip down what they hope will be memorable lane.

Before tomorrow’s match against USC, students and fans are invited to join the Warriors, cheerleaders and marching band in the first volleyball Warrior Walk.

The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hale Aloha Courtyard, where there will be a face-painting station and free Manoa Maniacs shirts.

There will be free pizza for the first 100 students attending the match.

At the match, special wristbands will be handed out, with a drawing to win Beats headphones.

Football coach Norm Chow has stressed the importance of cross-training.

And that’s why the Warriors participated in dodgeball and kickball battles yesterday afternoon.

It was back to basics this morning with regular conditioning drills.

The first spring practice is 13 days away.

I keep thinking about those great Waikiki entertainers of the 1970s and 1980s who tragically passed prematurely.

And I’m reminded of that morning host, who sits on the right, who once said: “Drugs. It’s a terrible four-letter word.”

Can anyone explain what a futures contract is? i know we pick up two highly thought of players in Derrick williams and Myron Rolle to the but do they count against the cap.

Let’s see, spring training in 13 days. No, I won’t be in Honolulu. Shucks. But maybe spring training is closed to the public?

Spring training is back open to the public.

    And to the media.

sometimes late at night, groups of young people converge on one of the kapiolani tennis courts and have some entertaining dodge ball games. and they let anyone join in too.

Is it better to be skinny in dodgeball to avoid the ball or heavy to absorb the hit?

Where I grew up, on Kauai, we called it “prison” ball. The rules were the same, but the object was to try and catch the ball, not dodge it. If you got hit, you went to prison. Dodging was allowed, but only the panties dodged the ball. If you tried to catch the ball and missed, everyone would chant “rubba chess, rubba chess!”

Anyone that’s played baseball will have a big advantage. Ahh the good ole days of middle school PE… Me and 3 of my little league pitcher teammates all had the same PE class and we wreaked all kinds of pain on the unathletic kids. Might be why our school PE teacher installed a “no headshot rule” after a couple days and one bloody nose to the nurses office.

  30. Buffoman March 7, 2013 9:01 am

We had to dodge but catching allowed for the freeing of someone who was out. Then there was just the pure dodge ball. What’s worse, making the wrong call and ducking and getting a ball right in the face, or making the wrong call and jumping and getting one between where the lunch money and baseball cards were held?

Always look forward to see which relatively unknown players will emerge during spring ball. Exciting time.

  36. Buffoman March 7, 2013 9:38 am

#34 That’s old school. Couple of friends when couldn’t make whole teams in the park, one bat a ball, gloves for those who could afford them. The rules were: How many relays, how you wanted the bat (on the ground or standing), can or no can bean the bat when on the ground. Good fun, before we had television.

Reading the non-electronic version of today’s Star-advertiser, I noticed that Sam Choy’s Breakfast, Lunch & Crab will be closing at the end of this month. In the final few days, they will have “fundraisers” where a portion of the sales (25% dinner, undisclosed portion of breakfast and lunch) will be donated to various organizations. February 28 is designated for Na Koa.

  41. Annoddah Dave March 7, 2013 10:03 am

@#34 & 36: I remember “sky inning”. One batter had to hit the ball in the air. If caught, the one who caught it became the batter. If the batted ball was a grounder, the ball could be relayed to other players or rolled to the bat on the ground. The rolling ball hitting the bat would pop up and the batter standing behind the bat needed to catch it as it popped up. If he/she missed, the one rolling the ball became the new batter. That’s about as close to the rules as I remember…that was a long time ago!

Mahalo to the Big Muckamuckas for the multiple scheduling in the spring NCAA sports.

We gave away our baseball tickets for Saturday night, but we have more tickets to give away this weekend. Remember, Saturday is Senior Night for the Wahine basketball team.

We have two baseball tickets for tonight’s game against Gonzaga at 6:35 pm. If no one wants them, we’ll stay for the first three innings and then head on over to The Stan for the Wahine basketbal game which starts at 7 pm.

We also have two men’s volleyball tickets (against USC) or two baseball tickets for tomorrow evening. If no one wants one of the pairs, we’ll stay for the first three innings at The Les and then head on over to The Stan for the rest of the volleyball match.

Meanwhile, there are softball games tonight at 6 pm & 8 pm, tomorrow night at 8 pm and Saturday at 4 pm & 6 pm.

On Sunday, there’s a a baseball game at 1:05, two softball games at 2 pm & 4 pm, and a volleyball match at 5 pm.

If you’d like baseball or volleyball tickets, send me an a-mail to swood at hoku dot com. Be sure to include your (real) name plus a daytime telephone number.

#34, 38, 41. So you old enough to remember playing football in a sliver of grass (sometimes at the nearby fire station) and because it was so small couldn’t play tackle without getting hurt so we played “Hawaiian style touch” where passing was allowed beyond the line of scrimmage. When we craved battle and wanted to play tackle, the only pay was “up da middle”. That was fun.

3-Prong three guys had gloves so we had to share. I’m a lefty so I was always to a disadvantage. Two were gloves with webbing, one was with “independent fingers”. Was good fun but that skin ball was really hard (no tennis balls as we did not know what tennis was).

Had to jun ken po for who would get to use the glove when the guy won the chance to hit. Can’t remember was there a penalty if you did not hit it in the “sky” after three tries and you had to turn around and throw the ball over your head?

  68. papajoe2 March 7, 2013 2:26 pm

We used to take out the inside of an old skin ball and rewind it ourself and sew it back. The ball became soft. When we pau play in the outfield, we would leave our glove on the ground and the guys that was batting now gotta play in the field would use the gloves. Never did have enough gloves for everybody.

  69. Ipu Man March 7, 2013 2:30 pm

Ahhh…smell of a baseball glove in your face while

waiting for the player to hit the ball…

  70. papajoe2 March 7, 2013 2:32 pm

The bats we used were mostly broken Little League bats that we would nail back and use tape to hold it together. Slippas for bases or draw da bases with chalk. We played on our street. We had different sections of the street where we could play. We learned never to play by the neighbors that grumbled or yelled at us when the ball would go in their yard or the batted ball would hit the telephone/electric wire leading to their house.

Okay seems like get plenty old futs (hope dis not one bad word today…used to be) today. You know you old when:

    1. You had to sprinkle the starched clothes, put em in one bag and wait one day before ironing.

    2. You had to tell the other person on the party line for get off because you had to make a call.

    3. You had to do chores before you could go out to play.

    4. One of the chores was to get kerosene for the stove

    5. You could separate the foil from the paper from the doublemint chewing gum (cost 5 cents)

    6. You used to make badges from the soda bottle cap when you could take the cork off the inside without breaking it then put the “naked cap on the outside of your t-shirt and seal it with the cork in the back.

    7. You house had one “slop can”

    8. Your mother had one jar with bacon fat to cook the eggs and fish.

    9. Things were stored in the “safe” and not go in the refrigerator

    10. You knew somebody who still had on Model T when you was one kid

On another subject, is it the pitching mechanism that is causing the stress on the elbow that has caused the tears on two UH pitcher’s elbows?

Just read where we have another one out. I do not recall that injury with this frequency in the past, I just wonder if we are doing something differently with the delivery motion to cause it to stress and tear.

@#77 Bufo: Truly a “walk to remember”-

-when milk was delivered to your house in glass bottles

-when starch for the clothes had to be “cooked”

-when dry cleaners gave wooden hangers

-when you had to bring your own pot for Chinese take out

-when you had papaya leaf stems for blowing soap bubbles

-when you had a special “kini” for marbles

-when there was no such thing as “rubbah slippah”

-when it was stock car racing night at the old Stadium

-when people came down to Aloha Tower to see the ships filled with tourists

-when Funai boat builders launched a new sampan with a parade and candy

-when the city dump was at Kewalo Basin

    -when HRT had electric tolleys

-when Aala Park never had any homeless

  84. Inyoface March 7, 2013 4:30 pm

Got it give it to Boise St., they deserve it and are the Pac-12 team of this conference which brings in a lot of dough. One thing though, UH has beaten Pac-12 teams. It’s another highly anticipated season, hopefully UH can bring some showtime back to the stadium.

Annoddah Dave — weren’t the hangers worth 1 or 2 cents if returned? Coke and soda bottles were worth 2 cents turned in. Gee– I remember and did all that except for the Aloha Tower boat days (until my own departure) and the Funai boat builders parade… maybe because I was in Kailua between preschool and 9th grade.

I remember looking for soda bottles along Wahiawa reservoir so that I could buy a soda.

My father had to crank the engine of his old blue Ford truck to get it started.

The paint would come off on my hands when I rubbed it.

I used to be shame going to school in his old truck.

But then I used to walk a lot anyway to and from school. It must have been at least two miles each way.

I used to help my mom do laundry. She had a rough board that she scrubbed the clothes against.

However she had an automated wringer. It was like spinning two rolling pinsnext to each other. I used to feed the wet clothes in between to squeeze out the water. Had to be careful or it would squeeze my hand.

Made my own slingshot out of rubber tube and guava branch. Guava was the best.

some things i remember…we called it skyheeny? but then again i’m one of those people who heard one thing as a kid and decades later as an adult find out i was really hearing something else….

example…when something was hot, i thought my mom was saying “hot sui” then my first time i said hot sui around my wife (filipina) she said she liked how i changed “atsui” to hot sui…she thought it was cute.

    thanks mom 🙂

…and it wasn’t till this christmas i put 2 and 2 together and figured out in the song “i saw mommy kissing santa clause” that santa clause was really the husband/father…geez, my whole life i hated that song thinking how terrible it was for the kid to see his mom kissing someone else….

by now i’m sure all of you figured out i’m part portuguese…..lucky thing i not full 🙂

My uncles and friends drank Lucky Lager because they did not like Burgermeister or Black Label and could not afford miller High Life. They smoked Old Gold. Some liked non filters and smoked Chesterfield and Pall Mall.

We ran behind the “fog truck”. Grandma made the best Benton bail when wexwent and spent the day with grandpa on the farm. There was a v apple tree (bet you guys never had a green v apple).

You don’t the implications of these heavy fines. You are just encouraging the poorly paid traffic police officers to take advantage. You should find other people to reinforce this not the already corrupt policemen who chase minibuses only day and night. You should also make sure that every district there better breakdown services like the AA in UK. Inu mbuzi musamathamangire kupanga outrageous laws without providing solutions. You should also buy helicopters to rescue accident victims on the roads like is the case in developed countries. The governments there are really caring not zopusazi.

I remember the fog truck too. The mosquitoes lucky nowadays.

I guess we also were also lucky back in those days in Wahiawa. A summer job was guaranteed in the pineapple fields. That was real crack a. But $1.25 per hour was good money.

How about having to dial 9 on the telephone to call downtown Honolulu from Kailua and you were charged a long distance call, that’s of course if nobody else was on your partyline when you wanted to use the phone.

I nevah realize get so many OLD futs on the blog! I suspected, but today reinforces!

When the milk was delivered in the glass bottles early in the morning, you had to shake it before you took out the thick paper stopper to mix up the cream that on the top.

In my younger days (until high school), we’d say “lad-joe” the ball when playing football on the street. I finally realized we really meant to say “lateral”. And we’d say, “throw one sparrow”. That was good until we learned what a spiral was.

I remember the Laundry Man, the Manapua Man, The Yasai-san(Vegetable) Truck, the Slop Man and the Clorox Man. Plastic Tumblers with Cottage Cheese. Golden Wheat dishes in Laundry Soap. Savings Stamps. The Curfew Siren. Going to Sand Island to poke tako and see the SeaPlane. The old airport, the PanAm Clippers, the United Airlines and Japan Airline DC-8s. The lei sellers and the smell of gardenia bunches. Standing outside feeling the propellor wash as the planes started up and the man with the long pole passing weather and instructions to Pilots through the window. I remember the trolley buses down king street with the overhead electric wires. So many memories of days gone by…

  111. SteveM March 7, 2013 9:31 pm

We didn’t wear backpacks when we were kids (unless you were a boy scout or got military surplus from the store(s) on Sand Island Access Road. But Pan Am bags were the “in” thing. Who had a Pan Am to take to the beach?

  112. AlaWai March 7, 2013 9:33 pm

@110. #al You could rent a canoe, rowboat or motorboat. There were fishing stands where people would use long poles to catch mullet. You could eat the crabs from the Ala Wai and not die of dysentary! AlaWai didn’t have to wear pants back then.

  113. AlaWai March 7, 2013 9:36 pm

Started with Kahki over the shoulder school bags and denim sleeping bags. Graduated to PanAm bages with cardboard inside to keep them from sagging. Buster Brown and his dog Tag! US Keds then Converse high tops.

  114. al March 7, 2013 9:39 pm

    …and wow lau lau!

you guys are freaking old…i only remember two things.

10 cents buys you gravy and rice at the central ymca.

if you bought tab soda it came in a larger bottle than coca cola but tasted like s..t.

7 cents for one loaf of bread.

  115. al March 7, 2013 9:40 pm

  116. al March 7, 2013 9:43 pm

  117. SteveM March 7, 2013 9:44 pm

Grandma used to make us shirts out of the rice bags. Even Tsai-ko size with the 50-100 lb rice bags back then. 🙂

  118. AlaWai March 7, 2013 9:45 pm

You are Makule if you….Drank GreenSpot Orange Uncarbonated Soda. The only chocolate drink was Ovaltine. Ate 5 cent Ice Cake with a Li Hing Mui inside or bought the bad of Li Hing Mui for 5 Cents and a Lemon. Dug the seed into the lemon and suck the juices. (Makes the back of your jaw ache ya?)

  121. AlaWai March 7, 2013 9:49 pm

@al. Solid boards or if you were rich Balsa. I wish I still had my Grandpa’s homemade Tako viewing box. He used to put me in a bucket mounted to the inside of an innertube and drag me around Sand Island flats looking for Tako. He put them in an old rice bad and into the bucket with me. I still hate when Tako stick to your skin. LOL!

First, there are shops which are designed and operated by Sportday itself and and second, there are shops which are designed and operated by independent shop owners. I think is verry good for bussines

went well with the dill pickle encased in the green wax or the dried red squid in the big chinese jars.

Have to look for my father’s tako box. He used it mostly to pick oogo. I was the kid holding the inner tube with net for the seaweed. One day I cut my foot on the reef bad… dad broke apart a cigarette and stuffed the tobacco in the gash and wrapped it up.

I don’t remember much after that except thinking dad had to waste one his cigarettes on my foot. Never heard of that tobacco as a bleeding/coagulation agent… a WW II soldier trick?

Hope you all have been doing good this 2013, so far. This old computer is up and running again, but with the end of the school year just a couple of months away, I’ve found little time for anything but helping the kids with studies and my littlest one with learning to read.

Came across this in the morning’s quick glance at my homepage:
