OC Sports to televise Wahine matches; new senior walk; JHT honored

OC Sports will televise the Rainbow Wahine NCAA Tournament matches this weekend.

* * * * *

The senior walk will be conducted before the start of Saturday’s game against South Alabama. At least that will be the formal ceremony.

The players are free to take their final walk or party with their friends and family after the game — reviving the spontaneity of the first senior walk in 1979.

In recent years, the administration-controlled senior walk was too commercialized with delays that were so long a few hundred remained in the stands for the final introduction.

* * * * *

John Hardy-Tuliau was named the Mountain West Conference’s player of the week for defense. He had two picks, one of which was run back for a TD.

* * * * *

Kennedy Tulimasealii’s commitment to UH is a big deal. He is a dominant defensive lineman.

Kahuku coach Reggie Torres described Tulimasealii as a “beast” who can play sideline to sideline.

By the way, Torres said four Red Raiders have received scholarship offers from the Warriors. Torres said all four are “leaning” toward UH.

H-4 — Kahuku to Manoa — is under construction.

* * * * * *

It appears tight end Ryan Hall has suffered a wrist injury. His status is doubtful, at best, for Saturday’s game.

    First again! Yay to Kennedy!

    One more game…let’s do this!!

  3. truegreen November 26, 2012 7:25 am

Kahuku to Manoa en masse? Sounds great to me. Especially how they killed it last Friday.

    top 5? good morning.

    Way to go, Kennedy!!

Please take care of your school work.

Congrats to the Warriors for the win. Unfortunately, the TEAM (all members were not suited and on the sidelines) for the game on Saturday. How can we as fans condone this. When is the TEAM defined by the coaches as the ones allowed to be suited and on the sidelines. If this the culture of change my family and friends don’t like it. Why is this not being addressed by the media? If you practice and are a part of the team shouldn’t you suit up? More and more of my friends are seeing this at the games.

  7. WarriorMojo November 26, 2012 7:34 am

    Congrats to John Hardy-Tuliau.

Trying to remember, is that our first award this year?

  8. Wes'side Warrior November 26, 2012 7:40 am

    Morning, Gang!

I hope someone will video the Senior Walk and post it… for us folks who can’t make it there!

  9. BigWave96744 November 26, 2012 7:41 am

ST, any word if Michael Carter and the BowWars are going to have their annual alumni tailgate and be on the field pre-game?

  10. Wes'side Warrior November 26, 2012 7:41 am

H-4 should have been built ages ago!

  11. Stephen Tsai November 26, 2012 7:43 am

It’s always been the case, back to the mid-JJ years, that only active players suit up.

It happens in other sports, too.

I can see where it’s better not to have an inactive player on the sideline. There’s nothing he can do during games. But I suppose there’s no harm in letting him wear a jersey, if he wants.

  12. Stephen Tsai November 26, 2012 7:44 am

    BigWave:

I heard something about “old-time” players being on the field.

I’m in a time warp, though. Michael Carter is my Dorian Gray.

  13. Pauoa Boy November 26, 2012 7:44 am

John Hardy-Tuliau had a nice game and got the better of his boy Bradley Randle who couldn’t get loose against the D. Always thought he could be a menace if put in the right situations on the field. Too bad he’s been injured off and on this year.

Tulimasealii is going to be huge in a Warrior uniform. Welcome to Warrior Nation bruddah Kennedy!

Kahuku boys leaning toward UH would be cherry. Hope Ben Mamea makes his way back to UH too and teams up with Fonua to bolster that LB corps. If Wily, Kawe, and the rest of the Kahuku boys make it to Manoa, that would be icing on the cake…

  14. Stephen Tsai November 26, 2012 7:45 am

    Wes’side:

I think the ceremony will just be a ceremony.

I’d like to see what the seniors decide to do, on their own, for the post game.

  15. WarriorMojo November 26, 2012 7:48 am

Wait, what? You have Michael Carter framed in your attic?

  16. (Jesse) James November 26, 2012 7:49 am

Good morning Tsaikos!!! Hope all have a great day!!! Good news coming out of Manoa….hope it all happens.

  17. Wes'side Warrior November 26, 2012 7:50 am

Yup. Post game… improv… can’t wait! You know the emotions will be high too. Will South Alabama stick around and watch, like many visiting teams do during Senior Walk in other sports? I mean, just seeing our student-athletes buried with lei is unreal!

  18. Stephen Tsai November 26, 2012 7:51 am

If you’ve been on the road with the Warriors this season, you’ve probably seen Lavana.

Lavana is a travel agent for Panda.

    In title.

But on the road, she assists with the meals, stirs the soup for chilly games, videos the post-game conference, then helps makes sure that the team gets back to Point A.

Everybody is grateful for her work, although she doesn’t get public notice.

    She’s part of the team.

You get what you put into things.

And . . . since the Temple game won’t be happening, in its premature passing and ultimate memory, I cite these lyrics from the song Streets of Philadelphia from the film, Philadelphia (where Temple University’s located, if ya din’t know).

    Heard the voices of friends,

Also Florida boys Tony Grimes, Marrell Jackson and Ne’Quon Phillips LOVES Hawaii and would love some of their speedy bros back East to become Warriors in the future. Cross your fingers, toes, rub your momona friends opu and Stay tuned!!!

Riley Wallace used to be good at wooing the NIT committee.

He also was a pretty good promoter. He used to call AP voters across the country and just chat. Imagine sitting in a Buffalo newsroom on a Sunday night when the head coach from Hawaii cold-calls.

Great game Warriors! Lot’s of new wrinkles and nuances. I liked them running out of the tunnel to start the game instead of the rather sedate arm in arm walk in. The evolution of the Warriors continues.

Mahalo Kennedy for choosing the home team! Big time and hopefully the start of even bigger times ahead!

    Go Warriors!

Would love to see more Florida guys come to Hawaii and play. Coach Demo was very excited about recruiting some players on his last visit. He says these Florida kids basically play organized football almost year round and have that much more time to prepare before college ball.

Great day to be a survivor of the weekend game that will provide support for the Wounded Warrior project. The boys represented the best of our young men in a battle for respect. I’m so proud of their all-out performance. It awakened the spirit within them, and I hope they continue their winning ways!

  52. Bigislandkurt November 26, 2012 9:58 am

Sorry to burst the bubble….because Kennedy is a HUGE pickup — literally and figuratively. But until we learn of he qualifying academically, all we can do is hope for the best. Remember state POY from Waianae George Kuawalu? He was supposed to be our next Pisa. Upon not qualifying, GK went to JUCO. That is where his great football story ended.

Let’s hope Kennedy’s great Waianae story continues on to UH.

    BIK

  53. kifi November 26, 2012 10:04 am

Chip Kelly: Hi Kennedy, this is coach Kelly from the University of Oregon. I just wanted to congratulate you on your commitment to getting an education at the University of Hawaii. We think very highly of coach Chow out there and the rest of his staff. They’re a young and up coming program and will benefit tremendously from someone like you going there and contributing to the building of that foundation that they’re establishing. But Kennedy, we’d still like you to take a visit here to Eugene and see our facilities and meet some of our guys in the program. We’re not trying to steal you away from Hawaii, we would never do that. But what we want to do is make sure that if you have a change of heart and decide that you want to spend the next four years on the mainland, we want to make sure that out of all the mainland schools that you have to choose from, you would choose us. In other words we know that you will either choose to go to school at home or go away for your education. If you do decide to stay home, then we wish you have a wonderful career there at home in Hawaii. If you do decide to go away, we want to make sure that your destination is Eugene, Oregon. We think that you would look great in a Duck uniform, playing alongside Aric Armstead, and Quinn Buckner. Both guys are true freshman that had tremendous seasons for us this year. We can see you in a Duck uniform next year right next to those two, as a regular member of that defensive rotation up front. Talk it over with your family. See if you can come up this week or if next week would be better? We’d love to have you visit.

  58. haka November 26, 2012 10:18 am

    @BIK,

No bubble to burst. I think everyone is happy to get the verbal right now and to know that the coaches are out there making contact and that the local boys are thinking of staying home. Qualifying is no doubt important, but if we go that route, then signing is even more important. Remember Jeremy Perry? BTW, I thought I read somewhere that Kennedy was doing very well in school. Anyway, Go Warriors!

  59. Abunai November 26, 2012 10:21 am

Jeezy is Mr Lepua really gonna cone and visit us? If he does I hope he realize that he’ll have a great start in starting for us at one of the de positions. I really hope we get him also. Great news on KT. I can see him being so dominate in the next level.

  60. Old School Dave November 26, 2012 10:23 am

“Two schools that I know I want to visit are Hawaii and Washington State. I like both programs a lot and they’re recruiting me hard. I have a good relationship with the coaches so I want to see those campuses. I plan to take all five if I can but I don’t plan to take any until December.

  65. Pomai November 26, 2012 10:41 am

#11 – ST- I can understand that but for this particular game I myself think that the whole team should have dressed, showing there support for the Wounded Warrior program.

  66. madeinhawaii November 26, 2012 10:46 am

Doesn’t the MWC limit the number of players that can be suited up for the game?

  67. Pomai November 26, 2012 10:51 am

MIH – no the rules only limit the number of players who can travel (64) number of player on the home team is unlimited, strictly up to the coaches. IMHO it would have looked good to see all the team dressed even the one who are hurt. They had uni’s for all of them.

If it was up to me I would have the whole team all 106 of them dressed and come out in front of the tunnel where the military guys where sitting and do the Haka right in front of them, would have looked awesome.

Congratulations to the loyal fans who continue to turn out for the games. You have the “Never Give Up” spirit. Now that the team has rocked our world, let’s rock theirs by turning out for the final game. Let’s give the seniors what they want most, a full house.

    Go Warriors!

  70. Haleakala November 26, 2012 11:42 am

I saw the Waianae – Leilehua game a few weeks ago. Even though Kennedy was double teamed, they still could not stop him from getting onto the backfield. He had some thing like six sacks and was always chasing the QB. It was unbelievable.

Great names so far: (Kennedy) Tulimasealii, (Marcus) Kemp, (Drake) Miller, (Keelen) Ewaliko, (Terrance) Polk, (Aaron) Zwahlen, (Rashaan) Falemalu.

Potential great names: (Kawahena) Johnson, (Aofaga) Wily.

Great standard names: (Charles) Tuaau, (David) Manoa, (John) Waa.

We’ve already had a bunch: (Marrell) Jackson, (Nequan) Phillips, (Benetton) Fonua, (Kendrick) Van Ackeran.

My All-Time Favorites: (Colton “Colt”) Brennan and (Falaniko “Niko”) Noga.

Chip Kelly: “Quinn Buckner”. Give me a break. It’s Deforest Buckner. Kennedy, don’t listen to that bull. Don’t even make a visit. Period.

Speed kills. We need a 4.3 playmaker, a great pass rusher, hard hitters. Florida or Texas have plenty of them. Southern California too. Good to see Chow running the spread. Notice the 49ers run the spread too. Read option, pistol, jumbo package, everything. Harbaugh is smart. Chow is getting the message. Kaepernick is a big time playmaker. I think Chow knows that Aaron Zwahlen is a playmaker too. Great arm and great speed. Runs the 200 in 22 seconds and very shifty. Is he a Johnny Football type? I dunno, but I hope so. Good size at 6’3″, 195 lbs. Can grow to 6’4″, and 205, 210 easy with the weights. Holy Grail material.

  77. Old School Dave November 26, 2012 12:08 pm

Agree, that the senior walk should be done in a simple manner – just introduce each senior, handshake, and let them go do their walk around the stadium. In years past it has been very drawn out, although well meaning, affair with all of the UH admin and Credit Union folks involved.

  78. Old School Dave November 26, 2012 12:12 pm

To the local high school recruits: If you attend school on the mainland you’ll have to depend on “care packages” from Hawaii. If you attend UH, anytime you want a Hawaiian Plate or some Lau Lau, Yama’s Fish Market is just a short distance from campus 🙂

  79. kifi November 26, 2012 12:19 pm

Jon Embree out at Colorado after only two years? Chizik out at Auburn, two years after a National Championship? Jeff Tedford out at Cal, after a career winning percentage of 62%? Gotta have thick skin to be a college football coach.

I hope Gary Anderson stays put at Utah State, as well as Mike MacIntyre at San Jose State. The MWC needs to retain quality coaches to keep its football programs strong.

We’ll see. Depends on what the market looks like. If somebody doubled my pay, from one cheeseburger a day to two big macs a day, I’d have to think about it.

Usually tend to disagree more than the alternative with Reardon, but he makes good points in his article today regarding Wahine VB. yes it doesnt make sense that we don’t get to host but time to move on. Washington is not the hottest team in the sub regional and if we get to a regional #4 Nebraska is better than 1-2 or 3 to get to a Final 4. NCAA could have done a better job at shafting us…….hehe. Go Wahine!

It was nice as a very long time fan to cheer on many plays Saturday nite – yes, it’s been a very long season and closing with 2 wins makes it much more bearable for 2013 – somehow, the 9 losses don’t seem to count anymore!!!!!!!!!!

especially with the commitment of Kennedy T and ST tantilizing comment about 4 more Kahuku players who are leaning toward UH – if this all comes to pass, does it mean the UH will get 6 players from the 2012 Kahuku State Championship team? I will presume that ST is not including the 2 current verbal commmits.

My interest is starting to “peek” up again

    kifi Says:

    November 26th, 2012 at 10:04 am

Not that far of a stretch.

If I was a head football coach, Id do the same damn thing and ALL UH head football coaches should do the same thing as well.

  101. haka November 26, 2012 1:26 pm

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for Hawaii! 🙂

  102. haka November 26, 2012 1:29 pm

“I always wanted to play in front of my family,” he said. “Just the fact they can come out and visit me instead of me being out there (on the mainland). I’ll be far enough away (at UH) where I can grow up on my own, but I can still drive down the road, and my family will always be there.”

“I’m going to be a Warrior,” said Kennedy Tulimasealii

    Love it!

In addition to Kahuku 4 (Falemalu, Johnson, Wa’a, Wily), hopefully the Warrior coaching staff also taking a look at Kahuku defensive players (DB Jayven Mohetau, DB/WR Lasalle Thompson, LB Matai Paselio) as possible walk-on candidates.

the senior walk before the game is nuts. why get the seniors all nostalgic before the “battle”? no make sense this. chow finally has the players run out onto the field fired-up, and then someone pulls this kaka—counter productive. IMHO

  122. (Jesse) James November 26, 2012 3:06 pm

#122….I think it can work both ways…Players get nostalgic before the game but can get fired up to go out with a bang as well…especially the younger guys watching who want to give the seniors a win.

Most other schools do the senior celebration festivities prior to the start of the last home game of the season…ala USC, ND, Alabama, LSU, and so on.

  123. BigWave96744 November 26, 2012 3:24 pm

I think most if not all colleges does their senior recognition before the last home game and it doesn’t seem to affect the players. To say that Hawaii players gets more emotional only degrades the character of the individual. JMHO

  124. Annoddah Dave November 26, 2012 3:33 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Good that the senior recognition is before the start of the game. This way those fans that leave at the end of the 3d Qtr whether we winning or losing will be around. These fans are so concerned to leave early to avoid traffic…I don’t get it! why not just do the PPV thing instead?

  125. Bigislandkurt November 26, 2012 3:33 pm

Those glory days for Boise is all but over with the emergence of the college football playoff system. And with the potential for a Chip Kelly to move on to the NFL after this year, I bet coach Petersen is a prime candidate for the UO job…should it become available. Boise will join the rest of the mid majors as simply being….well, a mid major.

    BIK

  126. Bigislandkurt November 26, 2012 3:40 pm

John Embree, U of Colorado Coach fired 2 years into his 5 year deal. Think Coach Chow would need to worry if we go 2-11 or 3-10 next year? Probably not. For one, don’t think UH would want to buy him out. Second, Embry did not have the backing of the Punahou Mafia. 😉

With that said though, Embry was a part of the legendary Buff teams of the late 80’s, early 90’s. Under Bill McCartney, they, along with Notre Dame staged some epic battles atop the college football world. Embry is a “CU guy” with CU credentials. His staff was filled with legendary CU guys like Eric Bienemy and Khanavis McGhee. But in the end, it came down to winning, of which CU did not. I’m sure the BUff powers that be found that it was much easier to buy Embry out than to have a few more years of bleeding red. Apparently, the boosters were not happy….and if the boosters are not happy, that does not spell good things for coach. Chow had better hope that we have some good, patient boosters.

    BIK

  127. Shoko November 26, 2012 3:47 pm

I think more than likely, Fresno State will get the invite to the Hawaii Bowl. I’ll be there for the Hawaii Bowl rooting for our conference mates for a win. SMU will probably come in as underdogs, but if the Mustangs can play like they did against Tulsa, it might be a great game.

  134. kapakahi November 26, 2012 4:27 pm

    #127. BIK,

Just seems as though the AD position will remain open since Apple(himself only in his 1st year as Chancellor) will be unlikely to make a major hire….like the AD position….until the UH Board of Regents makes a firm decision on Greenwood.

SO….JMHO that the pressure to win probably won’t be on Coach Chow ’til Year 3….the 2014 season….since just can’t see a brand new first-year AD and a 2nd-year Chancellor making such a major move that soon.

  135. BigWave96744 November 26, 2012 4:29 pm

But I want to ask you, how do you know the players still won’t run onto the field this week?

  136. kapakahi November 26, 2012 4:30 pm

I’m thinking year four before anyone seriously considers a change.

  138. kapakahi November 26, 2012 4:39 pm

    #138,

Either way WIN or LOSE….the UH Administration will need to make a firm decision on the HC following Year 4….otherwise Year 5 (the last year of Coach Chow’s current contract) would be a “lame duck” year….which would definitely hurt recruiting efforts.

  139. SAWARRIOR November 26, 2012 4:42 pm

    136. bigwave, thank you for your response, but you’ve lost me.

” how do you know the players still won’t run onto the field this week?”

where did i say they won’t? are you reading too much into my post?

  140. Shoko November 26, 2012 4:43 pm

I think I read that there was a buyout clause after year four in Chow’s contract. That leads me to believe that they are going to give him at least that much. But then again, if attendence continues to bleed where the lost revenue equals the buyout amount prior to year four, they could possibly consider termination.

  141. al November 26, 2012 4:44 pm

kifi and diogenes both have mutual respect for one another.

  142. Shoko November 26, 2012 5:02 pm

When Coach Pete was asked about the coach rumors at other schools:

“Asked if it was a distraction, he said, “It is not even kind of. It’s just rumors. That’s all I want really to say about this and I say it every year. It’s just rumors. I don’t even think half the time it’s reporters. Everybody’s a reporter these days. Everybody’s got an opinion on a blog, so they throw it out and oh, it’s going to happen.”

I use to think that Coach Pete was waiting for the Oregon job, but he and his family has such a strong relationship with Boise community, that jumping at another job offer seems unlikely. Perhaps, Petersen’s goal is to build a legacy at Boise. Sort of like Paterno at Penn and Ault at Nevada. Never know, there might be a practice field or training facility named after him when he retires.

    Support the coach you have.

Said many times Chow was last on my list of coaches vying to replace Mack. Think I was the first to comment ABC in regards to the candidates. I don’t like some of the changes he’s made nor do I agree with all his personell decisions he’s made.

Having said that, I’ll say I have a ton of respect for Chow as a person. He’s principled and lives what he preaches. I admire his resolve(some may call it stuborness) to stay the course he’s choosen as the best way to build the program. This even in the face of withering fan criticism. The win and the verbal from “da bull” of Waianae has somewhat mollified the criticism.

Now to my point. We’re in a pretty good position coaching wise when you take a look at successful mid majors and rising low level BCS schools. At least we don’t have to look over our shoulder to see who’s trying to poach our coach. Fans in Logan, Ruston, San Jose and to a lesser degree Boise must be losing sleep whether their coach will stay or leave for greener pastures.

Chow has stated that this is first and most likely last HC job. Said he’s come home. A place he’s always wanted to be. Can’t say if he’ll accomplish his gaols for the program – chase champioships etc. but as a fan he has my support. Does he have yours?

When Kekaula was on . . . was it KHNL 13 or KGMB? Anyway, he got into trouble when he got into some kind of argument (maybe more?) with a fellow new/station person? He got release/let go/asked to leave, whatever. Then, he resurfaced on KITV.

    Temper situation, no? Heh.

kifi – Sorry – perhaps I am over sensitive about poaching – them, not us! – and didn’t want any potential recruit reading a letter on our blog that might give him ideas.

No.67 Pomai, I appreciate your comment based on the Team and it’s participation with Operation Wounded Warrior. Unfortunately, Coach Chow has a different understanding of what Team means. My family and friends are turned off by this. We could care less who the coach is. And more so the media people who make it an acceptable practice. Would you want your son treated this way? Note: check the sidelines view of any of the big games on any Saturday. You’ll see all the football teammates along the sidelines supporting their TEAM.

  163. Old School Dave November 26, 2012 8:36 pm

CU’s problems lay with their administration’s lack of commitment to the football program. For example, they have the worst facilities in the Pac-12 now that Arizona and Washington State are building new football complexes.

  168. Former UH Athlete November 26, 2012 9:11 pm

Beautiful news on the recruiting front by Chow… I think Kennedy’s commitment will mark a turning point in local recruiting for UH. Crazy, but Chow has already made a bigger local recruiting splash in 11 months than Mack did in four years.

Newcomers Tulimasealii, Tua’au, and Moala, and returnees Yap, Samia, Friel, Pu’u-Robinson, Matagiese, Woodard, Andrade will be a much improved defensive line over 2012, if most can stay healthy.

    2012 Projected D Lineup:

    DL: Tua’au, Samia, Matagiese, Yap

    LB: Garcia-Williams, Daily-Lyles, Laurel

    DB: Edwards, Jackson, Hardy-Tuliau, Grimes

Tulimasealii will surely to get into the starting lineup at some point, probably not week 1. The LB competition will be fun to watch in the offseason. Chow has some very nice looking freshmen that will be competing for starting jobs next year. Garcia-Williams, Lance Williams, Benny Fonua all have shown they have talent and some speed. May be tough to unseat Laurel or Daily-Lyles or even Daley though.

The secondary is pretty much set for 2013 unless Edwards leaves early, but Maggitt would probably fill in.

I know Kaumeyer runs a 4-3 base, but looking at the potential 2013 roster, I think the personnel fits a 3-4 scheme better. UH is very deep at LB and UH has a couple tweener OLB/DE (Yap, Woodard, & Pu’u-Robinson) that could play standing up as the OLB/Rush End… like what Falemalu did vs Air Force. Tua’au and Tulimasealii are big DEs that could play down on the 3-4. That would leave only one true “DT”, but that’s where UH has the least depth, so by removing a DT, it helps the depth issue. Samia, Matagiese, Andrade, Friel can rotate at DT or a big DE on a 3-4.

Given that Kaumeyer went 3-3-5 vs Air Force and had success, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more 3-4 or 3-3-5 sets during 2013 in addition to his base 4-3.

I can almost guarantee UH will be much better next year.

  169. Warrior Dave November 26, 2012 9:27 pm

One thing to be careful when having the Senior Walk before the game. The players exchange bigs and kisses with family and its hard to get emotionally up before the game

Didn’t Mack try it one year and the team came out so flat. I emailed him on it and he agreed it would never be held before the game again.

    those little birdies are chirping.

sometimes a poor season will attract many.

sometimes an opportunity to participate outweighs the intangibles.

we are still in the hunt for many of the top local recruits.

and everyone knows how much talent this recruit class has.

    …nuff said.

  185. Former UH Athlete November 27, 2012 7:17 am

#164… Every Pac-12 school now has zero excuse for not committing to their football programs. The new tv deal guarantees over $20+ million per year, before bowl revenue, for 12 or 14 years (can’t remember the exact details) That’s why WSU spent $60+million on improving Martin Stadium & facilities, (AND paying Leach big money to become coach) when their program was at it’s weakest in decades.

From what I hear within WSU alumni groups, they are excited for next year, even after a 3 win season. Most aren’t bothered by the negative press the media is trying to put on Leach. When 19 players are kicked off or quit (most prior to the season starting), and the senior leadership has been non-existent, the alumni knew there were serious attitude problems the previous coach didn’t control. Leach played primarily underclassmen the last few games this year to get them game experience and build toward 2013 (hmm… sound familar. Luckily for Chow, he hasn’t had to deal with much locker room problems like at WSU).

Regarding Colorado, they are a joke. Their move to the Pac 12 was a cash grab (they knew the Pac 10/12 was going into negotiations with the tv networks prior to their move) and unless there is change at the president/BOR level, their athletics will be mediocre at best.
