NCAA and others: Let’s assume that there 100 teams (not schools) who are playing Hawai`i here in the six ticketed sports plus softball. Let us assume that each of the support fan groups accompanying the team is currently 50 people. That’s 5,000 people – each of whom will spend about $800 each including discretionary gifts but not including air fare over a four-day period. That’s $4 million dollars flowing directly iinto the economy plus about $40,000 in GET and TAT revenues.

Now let’s assume that special tour packages for half of those fan bases increase the number attending from 50 to 250 the first year out and include a lot more stuff including two extra nights even though the cost jumps up to $1200 per person. That’s 125,000 people and an increase to over $10 million going right into the economy and almost $100,000 in taxes

This is being done all over the country in both collegiate and professional sports. Why not Hawai`i? Maybe it’s time to bring the idea back onto the front burner.

Wouldn’t most people rather come to Honolulu than Boise? Football teams fan groups could bring in upwards of 5,000 peopl;e.

Still didn’t get an answer to my inquiry about the two basketball doubleheaders this week. Will check on it tomorrow between briefings at the Capitol.

Doug Kurtz will probably not make it on the next level in basketball but if he had joined the football team earlier, do you think he would have had a chance of being a great tight end or offensive tackle?

Interesting article in Yahoo news about the Ohio State suspended players and Terrel Prior in particular. Sorry, I don’t know how to forward it to this blog. He knew all along that he shouldn’t sell those stuff. He got pulled over 3 times by police and was driving a different “borrowed” car each time. Coincidence that the “borrowed” car was from the same auto dealer who happens to have autographed articles displayed on the wall at the dealership. Also mentioned briefly how they lobbied to have their suspended players play in the bowl game.

So we got two big boys from Down Under and NZ? What’s the scoops on our local boys on the homefront? I know of a few already offered scholies but no verbals or early commits in the works yet? I hope we got some ballers on the radar especially for our defensive secondary that have blazing speed and football smarts. It to me is of most concern when we lose Mana, Spence, Bryant, Lametrius, etc… I know Tank Hopkins redshirted and my man John Hardy-Tuliau should be pretty much a lock to start the next three years, still got Torres too. Hopefully the good news of some legit talent begin trickling in before NLI day.

  35. hawaiiansun January 4, 2011 10:38 am

Yesterday I reported that Rob Bolden, Penn State true frosh starting QB was looking to transfer to another FBS program. Bolden has 4 to play three.

It might be noted that three QBs playing in this years BCS bowl games were transfers from other programs.

Zac Frazier, Conn QB, transferred from ND; Ryan Mallett, Razorback QB transferred from Michigan; and of course, the most well-known of the three, Cam Newton was a Gator who played against Hawai’i in 2008.

What does an inquiring text cost?

    Warriors have nothing to lose.

  39. Ralph January 4, 2011 10:42 am

Texting could be too proactive for Hawaii. They rather do it slow and easy, and do it right.

Al says we have 9 verbals, don’t know who they are but we have less than a month before NLI day to fill our needs.

  40. NCAA January 4, 2011 10:43 am

Bolden’s mother, Tonia Williams, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Bolden and his father were traveling to Happy Valley to speak with the coaching staff. The school is on break, and players could go home after last week’s 37-24 loss to Florida in the Outback Bowl.

Williams said by phone her son told her he was looking to transfer, but wasn’t sure of plans. Williams says she doesn’t agree and hopes Bolden will stay, but she stands by her son.

“It’s his decision. I had to stand by his decision,” she said from her Detroit-area home. “I’m hoping he’ll have a change of heart.”

  41. Ralph January 4, 2011 10:43 am

  43. hawaiiansun January 4, 2011 10:48 am

Rich Rod didnt win where and when it counted. He was 6-18 against his conference, 0-5 against arch rivals Ohio State and MSU, and 2-11 against top 25 teams. It has been floating around A2 for awhile that 2010 was a put-up or go year for Rich Rod….anyway, kharma has an elephant’s memory and so folks in Morgantown are gloating….

Happy New Year to you, Diana, and Pops too!

Warm enough to cruise Alaska inside passage…the week before the UH-WA game? Arrive back in Seattle on game day well rested/fed and within sight of the stadium.

Several ship possibilities then. I favor the large Golden Princess at this time. Remember, in order to have a Tsai-ko cruise, we only need to the book the same ship/date — all other plans (air/hotel/ground) can be totally independent.

Panda Travel and NON-STOP Travel both are offering cruise-game(s) tour packages in various combinations, but I know most Tsai-kos travel independently. I have added the major tours to the Tsaiko-Vegas #3 page…

Let’s hope that Jim Donovan offers Coach Mac a contract extension to reward him for his efforts and to maintain a FB consistent program for the coming years. If there are any concerns regarding Mac’s misquotes, then they can put “conduct” clauses into his contract…BUT, we gotta get this done!

I still back the Mac not only because I appreciate him as a coach, but as a good person…

  49. Ralph January 4, 2011 11:04 am

slow and easy: they have their needs list, each potential player is rated, the coaches go out and recruit based on needs and not what bloggers perceive as a “must get” athlete. They do it expeditiously as possible, but without fanfare and keep their recruit board confidential.

Sometimes the little birdie chirps to Al but in most instances, the coaches are working hard and keeping it quiet. Tsai will give us the info when available. But it won’t stop us from chirping. 🙂

  50. A-House January 4, 2011 11:04 am

NCAA Al’s birdie is a smart birdie, info is spot on in football and basketball. Jeezy has kept us informed, we appreciate the info both of them have provided us.

I don’t post football recruit info, I don’t follow HS players alto I peeked at the scout list to see if we had any verbals to date. I rarely watch any of the videos of players posted here, I don’t care, I just want the best we can recruit from anywhere and win. But the beef I have, and I don’t know if it is valid, I don’t want last minute recruits to be the bulk of our NLI signings.

Isn’t that prohibited by NCAA regulations?

  61. NCAA January 4, 2011 11:40 am

    Mr. Ralph,

Now you got me confused. How do you know the coaches do it slow and easy. Also, wouldn’t bloggers must get athlete be similar to your best we can recruit anywhere player? 😕

  62. NCAA January 4, 2011 11:53 am

Article 13 of the NCAA Division I Manual.

13.4.1.2 Electronic Transmissions. Electronically transmitted correspondence that may be sent to a prospective student-athlete (or the prospective student-athlete’s parents or legal guardians) is limited to electronic

mail and facsimiles. (See Bylaw 13.1.7.2.) All other forms of electronically transmitted correspondence (e.g.,

Instant Messenger, text messaging) are prohibited. Color attachments may be included with electronic mail

correspondence sent to a prospective student-athlete, provided the attachment only includes information that is

not created for recruiting purposes, except for items that are specifically permitted as printed recruiting materials

(e.g., questionnaires). In addition, attachments shall not include any animation, audio or video clips and there

shall be no cost (e.g., subscription fee) associated with sending the item attached to the electronic mail correspondence. (Adopted: 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, Revised: 12/12/06, 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07, 4/15/08)

cattle call on 1/6/11 – get date and place, but “what time”?

  64. NCAA January 4, 2011 11:54 am

    Sorry for not indenting properly.

  65. Ralph January 4, 2011 11:55 am

“must get” is only a bloggers opinion, each coach rates a player differently. What is the criteria for “must get” and who is the source or knowledge based person making the assessment?

a fan watches a video and there is the “wow” factor, “must get” this player, but is he the right person for let’s say, UH. I surely don’t know, it’s the coaches who make the call and most times it turns out to be the right call, otherwise a coach ends up with lots of players taking only mental reps for 4 years. 🙂

slow and easy is a cliche, who rushes into a situation like offering a scholarship without investing the time to view, analyze and ask other sources who sees the player on a regular basis.

  66. false al January 4, 2011 11:57 am

re 63 – why??? so u can cancel on the day of the event, AGAIN!

  67. NCAA January 4, 2011 12:04 pm

    Mr. Ralph,

I was saying that your “best we can recruit from anywhere” is similar to a bloggers “must get” player.

  72. al January 4, 2011 12:36 pm

    in addition,

rb sterling jackson will be on scholie…january i believe.

    and darryl mcbride/safety as well.

count these two as part of this class. both could end up as our starters.

also, projected fall transfers malosi te’o/rb and siasau matagiese/dline will be strolling on to cooke field and will definitely vie for playing time.

  74. al January 4, 2011 12:43 pm

    1. local boys

    2. lineman

    3. cornerbacks with, yup you guessed it, speed

    4. and as usual, we always, always search for the holy grail.

mind you, we have but a handful of scholies left, well maybe almost two handfuls.

i suppose that more scholies could come about if some players go elsewhere, become academically challenged, or creative roster adjustments occur.

Some were wondering about Thursday’s BB Doubleheader (that’s not really a doubleheader)

    From H-mail:

Doubleheader Ticket Policy: Fans with tickets to the women’s basketball game at 5:00 p.m. who wish to remain for the men’s game must purchase a men’s basketball ticket. Fans without a men’s ticket will be cleared from the arena at the conclusion of the women’s basketball game. Fans with a men’s ticket will be admitted to the women’s game for free.

Hey, I guess the parking fee is still good for both!

  96. A-House January 4, 2011 2:35 pm

Is there such a thing as “instinct” for DBs? Such as knowing or have a feeling where the play will go or breaking for the ball before its thrown?

How important is this compared to “speed” and “hitting hard”? There were several comments during the bowl games that a DB went for the “crushing hit” rather than use his smarts and go for the interception. I would prefer that latter cause what is a crushing hit if the receiver catches the ball? annodah first down!!!!!!!!!!!!

SteveM, #46, my family and I have taken an Alaska cruise during the first week of September. Obviously conditions vary from year to year but for what it’s worth, we found Ketchikan cold, rainy and miserable with temperatures in the 40s. However Juneau was okay, dry and partly cloudy in the 50s, and Skagway and Valdez and Seward were sunny and beautiful in the 60s. However the best weather was when we left the cruise ship and continued on the train to Anchorage and Denali National Park, all clear with temps close to 70. Ironically the further north we went, the nicer it got!

  115. Kazz January 4, 2011 3:42 pm

    Al,

I can appreciate that the buttons are pressed as there is a deficit with the athletic budget, BUT it’s ONE game and considering the $$$$$-making potential for Warrior volleyball, having as many UH fans stick around is important to that revenue sport as well.

Again, I saw how it went down last time. I saw several UH employees running around checking tickets and the response was civil, but man… there will be people that WON’T come back again!

  116. Kazz January 4, 2011 3:45 pm

    Al,

Oh sorry, I thought you were referring to the ticket policy for Thursday.

But yes, Hackbarth does NOTHING wrong. He doesn’t fall over people or obstructs their view especially he dances during the commercial breaks.

I just cannot believe I overheard people complaining about his antics.

I just don’t why the hell those kinds of people even consider leaving their homes if they don’t want to be entertained… IDIOTS!

  117. Kazz January 4, 2011 3:46 pm

Hmmm… maybe we can convice Coach Coolen to have Hackbarth dance for Margie Wright when Fresno State visits UH in their last year as a WAC softball member in the spring of 2012??? 😆 😆 😆 😆

“As a prep, Arizona Western OG William Hodgman (6-3, 320 5.1 – 40 yd) made a name for himself on both sides of the ball. The former rugby player who hails from New Zealand has plenty of upside as a football player and the Matador coaches have moved him to offense in order to help pave the way for what promises to be a potent running game this fall…”

Kazz – #116 – and don’t forget there are Hackbarth-imitators in the student section. Are people complaining about them too? I still remember when Mr. Hackbarth had a “conga-line” of kids following him around the SSC.

People also complain about Stretch & A-joe’s conversations, although the players seem to love it or at least don’t mind it.

I still wonder why people come to games if all they’re going to do is read a book!

HawaiiMongoose — that’s recollection of Ketchikan too…don’t forget the fog. 🙂 But I’ve only been there twice and weather is weather. Last trip was mid-July (peak $$$eason too). I’m sure whitey and A-House may have a different description.

Speaking with tour escorts with 400+ Alaska cruises, they all say the weather is the main factor–not time of the short 3.5 month season. I expected the May and Sep extremes to be the worse. They did not agree. Peak season is because it is mid-summer and people and students are on vacation–length of day and temp. not as significant as I might guess.

  129. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 4, 2011 5:03 pm

I asked the Athletics Departmentg administration about Hackbarth and was told that he had NOT been banned — at that point in time. Maybe he has been since.

As for the doubled-up game tickets – I agree that there should have been a two-fer; however, the ticket prices are not anywhere close to each other. General Adminission Wahine tickets are $8/$5 and lower bowl designated seat basketball tickets are $26 for everyone. I don’t recall what the upper level designated seat tickets cost and if there is an Old Futs discount.

When I brought up the issue of scheduling so many sports events on the same date, Carl Clapp said that UH has to deal with two different conferences re spring sports prices & play dates. In 2012, there will be three conferences which may make it even harder to take discounts into consideration.

Fall sports in 2012 may see home double-booking (Wahine volleyball and football) since the two sports will be in different leagues unless UH speaks up loudly.

In the 2013 spring season, the game schedulers will have to deal with Big West and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

    Back to work – elpainoindebutteo

  130. Kazz January 4, 2011 5:07 pm

These are WAC games for both men’s and women’s basketball. UH has NO control over the dates scheduled, but they do have control about how to organize and make double games easier and affordable for fans to enjoy the entire evening.

Could have made some money off the extra concessions too. Some people might visit the concession stands or beer stands several times over the course of two basketball games.

Coulda, shoulda… oh crap! Too late!

  132. Kazz January 4, 2011 5:11 pm

$15.00 would have been a good median.

Wahine tix are $7.00 gen admission and men’s upper level are $18.

After the Wahine game, the fans could move up to the upper level for the men’s game.

Again, UH is sitting on a good opportunity for this Saturday. A basketball doubleheader with Vollefest afterwards.

It’s not too late to consider such an offer to fans as there is still time until Saturday!!!

  133. Kazz January 4, 2011 5:13 pm

Wow. I never thought about that! You have UH’s two most popular sports (football and women’s volleyball) possibly competiting on the same night! Hmmm..

Well, we can FORGET about the MWC making any extra accomodations for UH, but maybe we can hope that the Big West does indeed have enough respect for what Wahine Volleyball is and bend a little there.

Been to a few of the African countries it’s quite a scene especially the drive from the airport to the hotel. There are kids on the street knocking on the van window asking for money. The local driver says not to give them any money cause once you give one, you will get mob by many.

Here in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and looking to see where civilization supposedly started. Lots of historic places to go.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  153. kev-1 January 4, 2011 10:03 pm

Looks like high school football players all around the country learned a valuable lesson this year from watching college football . . . cheating, dishonesty, greed, and big egos pay off. Just look at the success that low character athletes have had this season. Such a shame. You know, Kirk Herbstreet said it best when he said that these athletes (referencing Pryor) are told that they are the greatest thing from childhood because of their athletic ability and they come to believe it, losing sight of what’s right and wrong along the way (paraphrasing of course).

Pryor backing off of his pledge to return next season in order to play in the Sugar Bowl would be the icing on the cake this year. He hasn’t done so yet, but I have a strong suspicion that he may.

Who says cheaters never win? Here’s hoping that Oregon makes us believe that once again and takes down Auburn.

  156. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 4, 2011 11:52 pm

Carl Clapp told me that one of the problems which led to double-booking this season – and not just here in Hawai`i – is that there was no discussion, no interaction at the WAC level between the folks scheduling men’s & women’s basketball. In fact, the latter schedule was released at least two months after the men’s schedule.

  157. Slugger January 5, 2011 12:20 am

    Good night gang!

  158. Ralph January 5, 2011 12:30 am

UH didn’t have a choice or say in the mbb and wbb schedule but they could have marketed the games better to maximize fan participation and generate as much revenue as possible once the schedules were released.

WBB season ticket holders should have had the option to include the mbb games played on the same day for a nominal surcharge. Also single ticket purchases of wbb should have an option to the mbb games as general admission attendees in which they need to relocate to any empty seat and I’m sure an added surcharge would not have cost as much as paying the full re entry price to attend the mbb game.

  187. discount ipad January 5, 2011 8:18 pm

Great review. Thanks for posting such an in depth impression. I’ve handled one in the store, but your review covered alot of ground that I couldn’t with such a limited amount of time. Based on my in-store experience and your review I think I’ll be waiting for a future generation to arrive. The potential is certainly there for this device, but based on my current portfolio of tech devices (laptop, desktop, iPhone, iTouch) I’m not sure this device quite justifies the expense at this time for me.

  188. Eugena Shelburn January 6, 2011 4:28 am

Bill Daley a former Wall Street Executive for JP Morgan Chase has been appointed chief-of-staff. But some are wondering why Obama is trying to get so close to the people who he once called “fat cat bankers”. So have Wall Street and Washington become one in the same?

  195. Sexy Girl January 7, 2011 2:16 pm

  196. ED Hardy Pretty Women January 8, 2011 4:55 am

Whenever you’re shopping for jeans online, the best place to start is on the jeans company’s website. In most cases, buying direct from the company is a little more expensive than buying through other online stores, but making note of the company’s price gives you a good starting point for price comparison.

  197. ways to make money online January 8, 2011 6:32 am

I really like the colors here on your blog. did you design this yourself or did you outsource it to a professional?

  202. ge dishwasher parts January 9, 2011 2:43 am

You need to test the heating element with a muti meter not a light bulb. Disconnect the power, remove the wires from the element. If you get a reading in the ohm setting the element is fine. Still check the element over for discolorations and burn holes and disfigured sections. If the element looks all good and tests good then, reconnect wires and run it, watch the unit to see if water is leaking on to the wiring anywhere, maybe thru the holes for the element. If none of this shows to be a problem then I would say that there is a short is the controls.

In most jurisdictions, a lender may foreclose the mortgaged property if certain conditions – principally, non-payment of the mortgage loan – obtain. Subject to local legal requirements, the property may then be sold. Any amounts received from the sale (net of costs) are applied to the original debt. In some jurisdictions, mortgage loans are non-recourse loans: if the funds recouped from sale of the mortgaged property are insufficient to cover the outstanding debt, the lender may not have recourse to the borrower after foreclosure. In other jurisdictions, the borrower remains responsible for any remaining debt.

Until recently it was not uncommon for interest only mortgages to be arranged without a repayment vehicle, with the borrower gambling that the property market will rise sufficiently for the loan to be repaid by trading down at retirement (or when rent on the property and inflation combine to surpass the interest rate).

Basically my 3 month old son’s birthmother lied. Our son’s birthfather is not some random stranger who she does not know and could not find. His birthfather is her ex-boyfriend. They lived together briefly during her pregnancy. Around 5 months into her pregnancy something lead her to tell him she had an abortion, dump him and move out. Apparently she started to feel guilty about all this last week and she told him everything. He called our agency Monday and demanded his baby…. A social worker contacted the birthmother and she confirmed that she did lie and this young man is the birthfather.

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a while since I’ve been around or posted but as the 3 year mark approaches I can’t help but get a little nostalgic. It’s been almost 3 years now since my little W was born. I guess I’m using the forum as a way to mark the occasion since there’s really nothing else tangible I can think to do. The open adoption is still going well and W’s adoptive mom blogs about him and their family so I can follow along with their lives without being intrusive. We don’t exchange emails as often as we used to, but I’m ok with that. Honestly, most of the time I completely forget about their existence. Perhaps some will think bad of me for that, but I know he has fantastic parents and is a happy, loved child. I’m glad things have turned out the way they have 🙂

Eagle Air is a novice looking to be free to stroll all the exhibitions “Life is to learn not to get …”I like this sentence, very healthy outlook on life: You do not get a satisfactory cause; is learned How closer to happiness. You do not get the victory; is to learn how to avoid failure. You do not get the final result you want; that things will not be satisfactory to learn …

Many people don’t understand the effects misleading effects. I knew what you meant. It can be more effective to give people little opinion with facts here. I recognize this problem but with little clue, so we must face the topic together. With new assurance, we hope that the skill of other categories can be found together. Nice people can work with great people, and great resource is important for us in analyzing the case. I’ve studied for more than 4 years to analyze them, but the fact still can’t be discovered. In order to do that, we must deal with the changes of management resources. With so many resources here, we can develop new ideas for solving to problem. Let’s give opinion, let’s discuss them, we can take charge with our resources. The last one but not least, I support your analyzes to face new one. With many resources that we can collect, all of them can be handled well.

The purpose of your website can be great for my students. A lot of great resources are free in here. Initially, I have introduced your website to my students in my class, so don’t be confused if your website hits are increase dramatically. I discuss many topics, still debating in every aspect that can be debated, and at the end of my class (every week), I told them about the conclusion of your topic. Hot topic and atmosphere can be fun here. And then, you might be surprised that my students got new story every day, and also all of them can express their idea in home and school. Especially they told to her/his mom/dad, that they learnt many topics from teacher that learnt from you. Surprisingly that everyone wants to get new challenge in your idea, and then when I give new topic, it can be challenging for all of my students.
