Viva Las Vegas

lv1

Last night, the good folks of the blog gathered to celebrate the life and loves (sports, food, karaoke) of “Las Vegas” — John Collins.

He left us fun memories and, indeed, songs in our hearts.

Collins lived the last several years in Las Vegas, hence the creation of one of his three blog names, but Hawaii was always his preferred residence.

Welcome home.

It’s not a party until UHFan808 sings “Funky Cold Medina.”

Doom-and-gloomers should note that there was pretty good talent on the Warriors’ 2011 roster.

Linebacker Aaron Brown, wideout Royce Pollard and left tackle Brett Leonard played in an all-star game the past Monday. Defensive tackles Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga will play in today’s East-West Shrine Game (11 a.m. HT on the NFL Network), and defensive end Zach Masch suits up in today’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl (4 p.m. HT on Versus). The previous staff recruited Brown, Leonard and Masch, and Tuipulotu transferred back during that tenure.

McMackin’s first recruit also is a pro athlete. Jake Heun (2-1) meets Richard Odom (6-0) in tonight’s ProElite3 MMA fight in the Blaisdell Arena. Among the ticket-holders is former UH slotback Kealoha Pilares, now with the Carolina Panthers. “I’m here to support Jake,” Pilares said.

* * * * *

Yes, that is Ryan Grice-Mullins on campus. He is enrolled this semester. Grice-Mullins had left UH after his junior season.

I don’t follow too many tweets, but one of the must-reads is Fake808Sports. The tweets are a combination of anger and humor, sort of like a mashup of Kevin and A-Joe. Good stuff.

  29. wafan January 21, 2012 9:53 am

Weird to see green trees. Yesterday they were white and encrusted in ice.

  30. gmahoney January 21, 2012 9:54 am

G’morning, Wafan. Glad to see you survived the great snowstorm of 2012.

  31. wafan January 21, 2012 9:54 am

  32. wafan January 21, 2012 9:56 am

  33. wafan January 21, 2012 9:57 am

Uhhhh, hoping that was the last of any 2012 snowstorm. We usually get our snow in January and February.

    Another 1.5 months to go.

    Sheesh.

  34. ai-eee-soos January 21, 2012 9:58 am

    # 28. If i remember correctly, that HS coach was with Dino at (Baylor ?),

    Good Morning again!

Great post, Stephen. Viva las vegas! Is it just me or is J(J) a better singer each time we hear him? D1, even more amazing than the al sighting was seeing Gramps without a green bottle in his hand… all night.

A stirring tribute was delivered by John Jacques, the “Dean of Hawai’i amateur Sumo”, and a former HS Football Coach at Kahuku HS. Nice to see the old master again.

Thanks to the Collins ‘Ohana for a wonderful night.

  39. Slugger January 21, 2012 10:56 am

    Good morning, gang!

Still brings a tear to my eye to remember John Collins, aka Las Vegas. We can go visit him in the temple up in Nu’uanau. Aloha, John.

ST ~ Didn’t you tell me last night that Alex Green was in town? Will he be at Davone’s Pro-Bowl party at Tiki’s?

Hurrah for Ryan Grice-Mullins coming back to finish his degree! Always helpful to graduate from college.

wafan, glad you can see the trees again. Can you see your car?

  40. d1shima January 21, 2012 11:01 am

  45. Wes'side Warrior January 21, 2012 11:43 am

    Howzit, everyone!

    Aloha Las Vegas!

Always good to hear of kids who return to finish up their schooling.

We had more Warriors invited to all star games this season than in any other year, as far as I can remember. Just couldn’t pull it all together due to the tons of injuries.

Good to hear Jake Heun continuing to pursue something he loves.

Good luck and best wishes to all former Warriors in whatever paths they choose to travel in the future.

Wish I could make it to Davone’s party!!! Take pictures!!!

  46. cincodemayonnaisse January 21, 2012 11:45 am

Al…how we looking for that RB?….good, great or outstanding chance we get a commit?

  47. jkjones January 21, 2012 11:57 am

Warriors need a tb that can squirt through seams, has stop n go, juke moves with breakaway speed….Mr Swag–Jeffrey Coprich Jr.

  48. MattyBoy January 21, 2012 12:03 pm

    Al,

You think some of those recruits visiting are just coming for a free vacation to Hawaii? Hard for me to believe that they really are considering us when some of those visitors have big time schools after them. Me thinks they’re here just so they say cN say they’ve been to Hawaii.

  49. madeinhawaii January 21, 2012 12:07 pm

What players went to all-star games this year?

  50. jkjones January 21, 2012 12:09 pm

there doesnt appear to be a bottom-lid in Mike Chow’s barrel of impressive recruits. they just keep rolling in. chow will have more schollies to give post Spring, assuming cuts. many good caliber recruits will be available after LOI day for one reason or another. there always is….

  51. madeinhawaii January 21, 2012 12:09 pm

Nevermind.. lol… now I remember where I read the list and came up with 6… LOL.. right in the blog today!

  52. d1shima January 21, 2012 12:10 pm

    Squirt thru seams?

Happened to me once….my Mom wasn’t amused.

  62. Kapahulu January 21, 2012 2:05 pm

Reports are that Joe Paterno near death.

If those reports are true, Paterno likely has, at best, a matter of days to live. It may be even shorter than that, as Mike Sisak of the Citizens’ Voice in Wilkes-Barre is reporting that Paterno is “near death.”

  63. al January 21, 2012 2:18 pm

that rb was offered a scholie from cal.

difference being we want him as a rb whereas cal will probably try him at db.

  64. al January 21, 2012 2:19 pm

50…you chow’s older bro is helping to recruit? is that legal?

  65. al January 21, 2012 2:20 pm

mattyboy…there will always a recruit or two that just wants the free trip.

  66. BigHiloFan2 January 21, 2012 2:22 pm

    thanks for the news kapahulu.

prayers to him and his fmily.

  67. al January 21, 2012 2:28 pm

those that have tripped here in recent weeks or were offered a scholie will need to tender a decision come monday.

snooze you lose is the way things will shake out in the final two weeks of recruiting. procrastinate and ye shall lose, that bubble will pop with you sitting on it as the coaching staff just takes the next guy on that pecking order list.

the pecking order predicates who gets a scholie. however, when the time is short there will be no waiting around, therefore, those still on the bubble need to commit or not.

wanna buy Joe Montana’s house ?

Joe Montana’s house can be yours, for only $35 million

Posted by Mike Florio on January 21, 2012, 5:45 PM EST

Joe Montana’s 9,700-square-foot, 500-acre spread in Northern California’s wine country can be yours for only $35 million, via Yahoo! Sports.

With three bedrooms and 3.5 baths, that’s $11.667 million per bedroom — or $10 million per bathroom.

And $35 million is a bargain. Montana originally wanted $49 million for the place.

OT Condolences to the family of the HPD officer who lost his life tonight in Aiea, people should drive with caution. No reason to rear end any vehicle pulled over on the shoulder lane, especially on the H1 with 4 lanes available.

So sad to hear about the officer who was killed tonight. Prayers for his family.

Yes, that is sooo sad. What are these dumb drivers doing? People are so inattentive behind the wheel, it’s scary. Really puts life into perspective. Puts a big damper on tonight’s double wins. Congrats to the men and women for the basketball sweep.

And what a nice gathering last night for Las Vegas…thanks SteveM and Collins ‘ohana for organizing the get-together.
