Veikune agrees to 4-year, $3.5 million deal

David Veikune and the Cleveland Browns have reached agreement on a four-year contract worth about $3.5 million, an NFL source said.
Of that amount, $1.8 million is guarnteed.
The guaranteed portion also is protected against skill and injury.
Agent Kenny Zuckerrman of Priority Sports declined to comment on the specifics. But he said “David has worked very hard to make this happen, and I feel fortunate ot be able to help him. He’s a model client.”
Veikune was the Browns’ second-round pick in April’s draft.
He received roughly a 6 percent increase over last year’s selection in the second round.

now to wait and see what the other 2nd rounders receive. only a 6% raise, inflation and the depressed economy-the value of the dollar, but his guarantee isn’t chump change, he can live on it and start an investment porfolio. no Nigerian investments, and Madroff is already in the clink..

Jason, I know kinda’ late, but congrats on the new job!

  20. Ralph July 25, 2009 10:22 pm

didn’t Kaluka sign a 4 yr 3.5 million, the only difference is the guarantee but Veikune is a second rounder and Kaluka a 4th rounder. I was expecting a second rounder with more money and higher guarantee.

  21. Garret July 25, 2009 10:25 pm

    Colomaohana,

ST just posted this blog…the post for Saturday has 216 posts on it.

  22. Garret July 25, 2009 10:27 pm

    Ralph,

Given NFL salary cap parameters, a 6% raise from the contract for last year’s pick at that draft position is reasonable. The cap for rookie salaries doesn’t go up 20% or even 10%, so I don’t understand your complaint here.

Of course, the salary for last year’s draft pick was known since Veikune was drafted, so there is the question about why it took the Browns so long to getting around to offering something like this.

  23. Stephen Tsai July 25, 2009 10:29 pm

I was going to wait until 12:05 to post Veikune’s signing, but I’m an old man, so I posted early.

  24. d1島 July 25, 2009 10:30 pm

    Give us a sign Stephen!

  25. d1島 July 25, 2009 10:31 pm

    Oh, done already….. 😳

  26. Ralph July 25, 2009 10:32 pm

Garret I’m also questioning why a second rounder and a 4th rounder signs for 3.5. let’s hope both make the team roster and remain on the Browns roster for 4 years, don’t they end up with the same pay check for base pay not including incentives, if any. the guarantee is a security blanket if they are cut, etc. and don’t make the roster or play.

  27. Garret July 25, 2009 10:34 pm

    Ralph,

Kaluka signed for $2.5 million, not $3.5 million…that is a pretty big difference! The signing bonus is also significantly different, which is a major consideration for players.

  28. Colomaohana July 25, 2009 10:35 pm

    Hahah…Mahalo, Garret!

ST: YOU? Old??? Naaahhhhh….I say, more mature….

  34. Stephen Tsai July 25, 2009 10:40 pm

    Maiava’s bonus is about $600,000.
Veikune’s bonus is about $1.8 million.
    There’s a big difference between a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick.

  35. βρεω808 July 25, 2009 10:40 pm

    Hey…Isn’t it still Jodie’s birthday…. and there goes Ralph trying to pick annoda fight…. 🙄 😀 😆

  36. d1島 July 25, 2009 10:40 pm

    wafan,

Can’t share your enthusiastic review of the HP movie…the hotdog was the highlight for me 🙄

  37. Garret July 25, 2009 10:41 pm

    Ralph,

Haven’t you noticed that some NFL players sign huge contracts that get headlines, but those numbers are actually heavily back-loaded? That means that the player will not actually see most of the money in the headlines, because he’ll either be cut or have to renegotiate his contract before the big dollar years at the end of it.

Getting the money up front means that the salary is reasonable…which means that the team doesn’t plan on cutting a player. In fact, a team is penalized with the salary cap when they cut a player that got a big signing bonus. On the other hand, a team saves money on the cap but cutting a player with a big salary and a small bonus.

So, for NFL contract you *have* to look at the up-front money. If a player earns a starting spot, his contract will be renegotiated down the line and the low annual salaries for the last few years will not actually take place. So, if Veikune earns a starting spot in 2 years, he’ll get a new contract in year 3 or so and the salary he was supposed to get in year 4 of this contract will be significantly increased…and he’ll keep his signing bonus that he just got.

If a player doesn’t earn a spot in the rotation and he has a big salary, he’ll get cut. He won’t see the increased salaries in the latter years of the contract. But that isn’t how Veikune’s contract is structured, he’s getting the bulk of it up front.

  38. βρεω808 July 25, 2009 10:42 pm

I had 100% Kona dark this AM! 😆

    Gggrrrrrr…. I gotta do some work…. I’ll be back. 😈

Except the phone rang, and I had to post the contract.

    Good night everyone!

I think Veikune will do very well as a LB. Happy with his contract as well.
Well folks….it’s like, 8:50 am here in Marshall, Texas…….off to have my breakfast…have a super nice day everyone.

    Okay…. the Trap is back. Borrowing a line from the Raiders (and from Ralph)…. Just W I N baby!!! 😯 😆 😀

  60. Garret July 26, 2009 4:42 am

    brew808,

One thing I thought about when I saw the headline about Coach Trap today is how many job searches inform the candidates who aren’t going to be picked and they then announce that they have decided to not pursue the job anymore…that helps them with the job they are going back to.

  61. Garret July 26, 2009 4:44 am

I do hope that Coach Trap does well this season and earns a long-term contract. He certainly has a lot of talent coming back, so that is possible. The 1-year extension he got definitely indicates he has to win or find another job.

  62. Garret July 26, 2009 4:48 am

If you look at the main Cleveland newspaper’s website, they have tons of articles every day on the Browns…but they *still* do not have the news that David Veikune signed a contract. That is a big deal for the Browns, so every day they have reported on the lack of progress for the 3 second-round draft picks, but it is getting near lunch time in Cleveland and they still don’t have the Veikune news.

So, ST scooped all the Hawaii newspapers *and* the Cleveland newspapers!

  63. βρεω808 July 26, 2009 4:50 am

Did you or Lori “discover” the WII-Toys R Us coupon? 😀

A job candidate has to be akamai regarding his/her chances for employment – otherwise, have to be ready to “cut bait” and preserve at least some bit of self-respect and dignity. Hey – this applies to our current Tsaiko job searchers. IMHO 😯

  64. Garret July 26, 2009 4:51 am

Even the Akron Beacon Journal, with its special section on Browns news that has articles and blogs every day on the Browns *still* doesn’t have anything on Veikune’s contract.

The latest articles just say that there are no progress for any of the three second-round picks for the Browns.

  65. Garret July 26, 2009 4:53 am

    brew808,

The Toys R Us coupon is prominently featured in their newspaper ad today…hard to miss it! I’m trying to see if I can get Best Buy to match the offer, because I have about $50 in Best Buy credits so I could get the game for free and also get the $20 gift card.

  66. Garret July 26, 2009 4:53 am

I’ve got to make the kid’s breakfast now…Lori is still sleeping.

Re: #64 – Yeah…. seems like the Cleveland papers and Browns news boards are at least 12 hours behind on their news – including news/updates on signing any of their draft-picks. Big PROPS to our ST for the news scoop! (Especially whilst in the middle of celebrated daugther Jodie’s b-day!). ST – he da man! 😆 😀 😆

Pro Football Talk finally has an article up about Veikune. They say that the guaranteed money is a little less than $1.8 million. It sounds like Veikune’s agent got an extra concession–Ralph should be very happy to read about this, Veikune got something that other 2nd round picks did not.

Per our source, the negotiating impasse was resolved when Veikune was given a skill, injury and salary-cap guarantee in the contract.

Not every second-round deal has included that kind of financial protection.

UPDATE: Veikune received $1.759,62 million in guaraanteed money and a $1.343,632 million signing bonus.

The Veikune deal leaves the Browns with two unsigned second-round draft picks: wide receivers Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi.

  76. Garret July 26, 2009 6:35 am

The Cleveland newspaper also finally has an article up. Veikune’s contract is done and Cleveland hasn’t even *started* negotiations with another of their second round picks? Wow, they sure are slow.

The Browns reached a four-year contract agreement with second-round linebacker David Veikune early Sunday morning, reported the Honolulu Advertiser.

Two Browns second-round picks remain unsigned — receivers Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi. A source said that negotiations with Robiskie have not even begun.

    Great Morning All!

Nice read by “Ferd” about Iolani’s effort to preserve the Fr. Bray legacy .

He’s right that it would be great if it spurs other schools to do similar things for their sports legends and traditions.

A larger point is that as “Ferd” points out, the “fabled past” of Hawaii sports involves much more high school achievement rather than UH. IMHO that’s part of what UH has to overcome when it comes to fundraising.

The best commercials for college sports were from the University of Oregon. Grabbed your attention and very funny.

The commercials for the Seattle Mariners are good, too.

Maybe the UH needs to look at script rewrites or hiring new people to do the spots.

Hmmmm, look at the map kind of guy.

A few years ago I was taking a bunch of kids to Yakima for a state conference. Really a simple drive down to Highway 12, head East over the pass then down into Yakima.

One of my brainiacs decided to take his map out so he could check to make sure I knew where I was going.

First thing I noticed is as we headed South he held the map in the North-is-up position. Not a problem until he insisted he turn right on Hwy 12 (West) rather than left on Hwy 12 (East). He was pretty adamant about it even as we headed up the hill.

That is when he got confused about the Cascades and Olympic Mountains. He could not figure out how we got to the Olympics so quickly — and we had not even passed the Sound or Hood Canal. Geez.

This brainiac graduated Magna from some private university in Boston in EE and now works for the government.

And, now you know why we are so screwed up.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

    Stephen,

I used to work at a nursery which participated in those plant sales. Those sales are usually on Saturday and Sunday with the bigger crowds and best plants on Saturdays. If you ever want to see some very cool plants, check out the Saturday event when most of the good stuff is still unsold. The crowds are getting smaller, but we used to see hundreds of folks over the two day period.

Why I’m not allowed to attend Tsaiko functions (taken from diary of a mad-man)…

Went past the grass practice fields today (should have a name, maybe the Toma grass fields), and I heard some hooting and hollering:

    “Bite me!”

    “Fall on me!”

    “Roll on me!”

    “Kiss my grass!”

It was the field talking. The grass is ready. Are you?

  125. Kekoa July 26, 2009 11:29 am

Brew ~ From my “Government Procurement” files:

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago , another is from Tennessee , and the third is from Minnesota .

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

The Chicago contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, “$2,700.”

The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?”

The Chicago contractor whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence.”

    “Done!” replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how the new stimulus plan will work.

Jake Ingram update. It looks like New England has agreed to a contract with their 2nd round pick, so only Ingram and the LB that will miss the season due to an injury are not signed yet. I do not take this as a good sign, because if New England was sure that Ingram would make their team (beating out Hodel) they would give him a regular signing bonus instead of insisting on a roster bonus…especially when you consider that late-round signing bonuses aren’t that big.

There won’t be a holdout from top second round pick Patrick Chung, as the safety, taken with the 34th overall pick, reported for duty today, essentially meaning he has agreed to terms on a contract, a source close to Chung confirmed.

Rookies were expected to report today, with veterans to report on Wednesday. Only rookie long snapper Jake Ingram and injured rookie linebacker Tyrone McKenzie have yet to agree to contract terms. Training camp officially begins Thursday.

  132. Garret July 26, 2009 12:41 pm

    Nice mention of Bess here.

Davone Bess, wide receiver, Miami Dolphins – After stepping into the starting lineup in Week 12, Bess caught at least five passes in five of the next six games. His best effort: nine catches for 74 yards in Week 14. Now, he still needs to find the end zone more (just once last year), and he’s not a burner. If you are drafting in point-per-reception leagues, though, I could see a relatively big year from Bess. He’s not fast, but he is quick. He knows how to find the holes in the opposing defense. Ted Ginn Jr. should stretch opposing secondaries and create room for Bess to work underneath. Greg Camarillo (knee) was working with the first-team offense earlier this offseason, but I still don’t believe he’ll be able to contribute as much just one year removed from torn ligaments in his knee. PPR fantasy players should strongly consider Bess in the final couple of rounds of their drafts.

  133. Garret July 26, 2009 12:43 pm

Interesting article about how some players can gain weight in college and others either cannot gain weight or gain the wrong type of weight.

“We as coaches get caught up in thinking we can put 20 or 30 pounds of lean muscle on somebody in a year, and a lot of times that’s not feasible,” Auburn strength and conditioning coach Kevin Yoxall said. “We’re not meant to weigh 300 pounds. You’ve got to look at somebody’s frame.”

For most players, however, three meals a day aren’t enough. A typical college football player can burn 5,000 to 10,000 calories a day during workouts and practices, particularly two-a-days, and those calories must be replaced — and exceeded — if a player hopes to gain weight. That’s where supplements come in, often in the form of protein shakes.

“The supplements — you almost have to do it nowadays,” said Mobile-area trainer Lyle Henley of the Athlete Factory, who works with top local athletes such as Jeremy Clark, Wallace Gilberry and AJ McCarron. “There’s no way you can take in that many calories in three meals.”

Simply packing on pounds isn’t the main challenge, however. Athletes want to get bigger and stronger without getting fat or losing speed and quickness. It’s that distinction that many young players don’t understand, former Alabama center Roger Shultz said.

“There’s a difference between a good 300 and a bad 300,” he said. “That’s something that high school kids don’t recognize at all. They’re looking at the scale and trying to get the right number.”

  134. Garret July 26, 2009 12:44 pm

What athletes should look for, Henley said, are foods that help them add muscle mass without increasing their body fat index. “They have to attack each meal like a workout,” he said.

Johnson said he also found stretching exercises and post-workout ice baths essential to help muscles and joints adjust to the extra weight. “When I first put (the weight) on, because I did it so fast I had problems with tendinitis and shin splints, things like that,” he said. “My body had to get adjusted to it.”

After all, bigger isn’t better unless it’s also stronger.

  135. Garret July 26, 2009 12:44 pm

    Back to work…

  136. Dennis Halloran July 26, 2009 1:30 pm

    Guarantees $3,103,252
    minus taxes/agents of 50%
$1,551,626 pro rated over 4 years is $387,907 annually.
Invest that in Muni bond funds, get 5% or 19, 395 after one year and 77,580 after four years.
Not too livable in the islands on $77,500. per year.
and if divorced as 50% do, its less than $40,000. HS teachers grade of pay

  138. Stephen Tsai July 26, 2009 1:52 pm

Roster bonuses only mean something if you’re guaranteed a roster spot.
The Patriots already signed a veteran long-snapper.
I can see this scenario: veteran does the snapping this year, Ingram stays on the practice squad while 1) he learns, 2) he gets bigger.
Thing is, that means he neither gets paid the roster bonus nor does he get credited with an NFL year.

anyone notice if rivals or scout changed the ratings for our locals since the all poly, nike, PIAA and UH camps? I noticed SMU 2010 recruits got their ratings from 2* to 3* without playing a game. I figured ratings on 2010 fb would change during and after the fall season (senior year) for performance but surprised as the recruiting heats up the ratings changed.

  154. letsgowarriors July 26, 2009 3:50 pm

    ralph

calen friel has been upgraded to 3stars on rivals. rated 32nd weakside DE. rivals doesnt list him as a verbal to hawaii. hope he is a solid verbal to hawaii, hes going to get tons of offers once his senior season starts.

  155. Ralph July 26, 2009 4:11 pm

thanks letsgobows, 57 is a good rating to start with it will go up with his performance this fall. Hawaii is kind of out of the flow of info for the scouting services, hopefully interviews with coaches they feel confortable with will justify changing the ratings.

I don’t like how the Pats are treating Ingram. It is time for him to start thinking about leaving camp. I think that’s the way the game is played. If #1 gets hurt, they need him in camp to learn everything. His strongest bargaining power appears to be now.

  160. lava July 26, 2009 4:57 pm

Re practice, I think I heard the team goes to Ching Field if it is wet. I prefer they practice on grass when possible because it is easier on the body and cooler. I suspect they’ll get more turf work in when they are playing on turf.

I don’t think they call it turf, but whatevers, it’s turf.

  161. Garret July 26, 2009 5:38 pm

    ST,

I completely agree with your #139 post…and that is what it seems like the Patriots are planning with Ingram.

  162. Garret July 26, 2009 5:40 pm

    lava,

NFL rules prevent Ingram from reporting to the Patriots until he has a contract. So, he won’t be at their camp that is about to start unless they sign him. His agent is doing exactly what you suggested and using what leverage he has to try to get a reasonable deal done.

The downside of this is that Ingram will definitely not be able to beat out Hodel if Ingram is not in camp. But when the new special teams coach brings in a vet long snapper…the odds are already stacked against Ingram.

  163. Ralph July 26, 2009 5:45 pm

Ingram is young, sit out this year, sign with someone else next year. if the pats keep hodel, he’ll be back again next season and Ingram will be back to square one with the Pats. Hard Luck situation, but sitting it out is better than signing a 4 contract with a veteran in front of him and him on the practice squad earning minimum wage.

  164. Dentist July 26, 2009 5:47 pm

Looks Amazing. Really David You are simply Great.

  165. βρεω808 July 26, 2009 5:50 pm

We have talked about this previously….

Perhaps it’s time for Special Teams, long-snapper extraordinaire Jake Ingram to punt…. on the Pats! 😯 😈 🙄

  166. βρεω808 July 26, 2009 5:54 pm

Dentist dude must be looking for Kekoa. 🙄

  167. Ralph July 26, 2009 5:59 pm

Brew is back, i thought the coffee wore off and you crashed. but i agree, its tough for Jake to walk away this year, but being a highly rated long snapper he’ll be a good investment for someone else next season unlike a wr or ol guy not signing on this season. hopefully someone will trade for his rights during the preseason and he can sign on with another team.

  168. Ralph July 26, 2009 6:01 pm

he won’t find Kekoa, with his sp. forces training Kekoa is in deep cover avoiding all needles with novocaine

I’m a big fan, my man, big fan. keep it up!

  171. lava July 26, 2009 7:38 pm

My guess is that if Ingram holds out for up-front bonus money typically paid to similar draft picks, it’s gut check time for the Pats, who would either pay the bonus or consider trading the guy. I don’t know much about what leverage a draftee long-snapper can throw at the Pats, but I’d suggest he say I want $x bonus paid up front, and you agree by August 1st or my bonus demand increases to $x + 20%. The Pats may decide they don’t need him, but he’s better than a lot of starters around the league.

  172. BG July 26, 2009 8:00 pm

Hey! Terrific to check in and see bhf2 and Tombo Ahi online! Glad to see you guys!

  173. BG July 26, 2009 8:02 pm

Question…isn’t it true that if Ingram is put on the practice squad, all the other teams have a shot at signing him?

  174. βρεω808 July 26, 2009 8:14 pm

    Yes

Players can be promoted to the active roster of their current team or to that of any other team. They have free agent status and can sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team.

The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 is $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[1] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000.

    Welcome back, bhf2!!!

  176. BG July 26, 2009 8:23 pm

Thanks Brew! Kinda puts the Pats in an interesting position. They either keep Ingram or they’ll probably lose him cuz he’s far from being an unknown in a most important position. If they keep Hodel, they have to pay much more money and probably lose Ingram cuz they can’t just stash him away.

  177. Kekoa July 26, 2009 8:29 pm

Peeking in from deep under mattress cover to see if it really is BHF2 on the blog. Not convinced yet. Too subdued. I better check wit his boss latah.

Of course if you can answer this question, now, I’ll believe it is you for real. “What is the name of our favorite Tsaiko singer – the one who has been known for harmonizing with Lions?”

  178. Kekoa July 26, 2009 8:33 pm

Whoever is smart enuff to grab Jake as soon as he is free, will net themselves a long snapper who will serve them for many great seasons.

  179. BG July 26, 2009 8:36 pm

    Kekoa

What’s the latest on Pops? No change? Better?

  180. BG July 26, 2009 8:50 pm

I would think that the Pats would be wracking their brains over this one. Jake may have more leverage than on first thought

  181. BG July 26, 2009 8:53 pm

Wonderful news on Veikune! Best wishes for a long and notable career! The more Warriors in the NFL, the better!

Seems like I’ll be joining Jason by starting on my MBA in late Aug. I’m just so excited to be able to go to school just for fun! And, maybe, make some of those CC’s that I keep reading about…YES

  183. BG July 26, 2009 9:03 pm

OK…enough hogging the blog…time to get ready for work tomorrow. Lattahz folks!

  184. Kekoa July 26, 2009 9:05 pm

BG ~ Pops is struggling with his meds. Trying to reach a happy medium on the one that controls his heavy anxiety attacks during the 4 – 6 PM time frame. Too much and he drops BP and respiration. Not enuff and he goes off the reservation.

We’ve come a long way since he’s been home. Doing another brain scan tomorrow morning at Tripler. Just takes a little more time this week of working with him. Hopefully the meds adjustment will allow him to balance out and be ready to attend fall practice next week.

Love and hugs to Pops and the Kekoa ohana…

    Re: Practice field.
I would imagine the plan would be to alternate between the grass field and Cooke/Ching field.
But after a while, I bet all of the practices will be at Cooke/Ching.
    Hey, it’s a shorter walk.

  187. LizKauai July 26, 2009 9:09 pm

BG- congrats on your educational pursuits… !

  188. Garret July 26, 2009 9:10 pm

    Kekoa,

I hope that they figure out the medication for Pops soon.

  189. Garret July 26, 2009 9:11 pm

    BG,

You are so lucky to be able to go back to school for fun! I guess that means you will be able to take advantage of student discounts to things now, pretty cool.

    bighilofan2,

Nice to see you back! I’m glad that your computer is working again.

Interesting study found that most people say that they aren’t old and that they feel younger than their actual age. People younger than 30 think that 60 is old, middle aged people think that 70 is old, 65 and older people think that 75 is old, and so on. Just 21% of people aged 65 to 74 say they feel old, and just 35% of those 75 and older say they feel old.

  192. Ralph July 26, 2009 9:14 pm

i hope they find a solution for pops and he can rump around soon. Pops and Jason ought to get together and come their episodes of AA, might have similarities and final solution/therapy would be nearly the same-manini adjustment for age.

A janitor was arrested for repeatedly peeing on a chair–after something strange happened with the chair on four other occasions, they used a hidden camera to discover the source of the problem. He was upset about being warned about sexually harassing a female employee, so he got his revenge by peeing on her chair day after day.

I found this article pretty easy to read considering that it was about the search for the Higgs boson. I thought that the race was over when the Large Hadron Collider was built, but it appears that the US group has a chance to be first to make the breakthrough.

I cannot believe how much work I got done today…finally finished the complete overhaul of that 15-page Commercialization Plan. Tuesday at 5pm I’ll be so happy because this will be behind me and I can live a regular life again!

Just a quick note to let folks know that DrDoc’s mother passed away earlier today at a hospice in Chattanooga. As noted in last Sunday’s post, we were expecting this at any moment, but still….

HI BigHiloFan2: Will you be coming over for any of the games this season?

A quick reminder: Many in the Tsai-ko community have been touched by cancer in some way. Don’t forget that this Friday/Saturday is the Kailua Relay For Life at Kailua High School – 6 pm to 6 am.
