Updates

Cornerback/kick returner Keenan “The Phenom” Jones is no longer a member of the UH football team.

* * *

Defensive end Francis Maka has an excellent argument for a sixth season of eligibility. He suffered a knee injury that prevented him from playing as an Arizona freshman in 2003 and then again in 2004. He then was at College of San Mateo for two years and UH for a season. While Maka and the compliance office are working exceptionally hard to lobby for a sixth season, Maka is not being counted on for this season. With so much time having passed, it has been difficult for Maka to gather the necessary documents to send to the NCAA. He needs an unexpected surge of good news.

* * *

Cornerback Jameel Dowling, who transferred from Oregon last August, said he has been placed on scholarship.

* * *

Shane Austin has shown perseverance by participating in unsupervised workouts despite an injury to his right foot. He wears a medical boot while practicing. He also has been tutoring the newcomers. Here, Austin  (left) offers advice to freshman quarterback Steele Jantz:

Wideout Joe Avery, who has gained more than 10 pounds, has the combination of height and speed. During a drill, he went one-on-one against slotback Michael Washington, who was forced to play cornerback. Avery, who is about 6 feet 4, easily out-jumped Washington for a pass. Here’s Avery (in red/white shorts):

Royce Pollard almost has been forgotten in the wideout competition. Pollard, like Avery, will be a second-year freshman. And, like Avery, Pollard has competed in every 7-on-7 workout this summer. Here’s Pollard (right) going against cornerback Kawika Ornellas:

And wideout Mike Tinoco also is proving to be a skilled wideout. Tinoco already has perfected the art of catching every pass with only his hands (or gloves).

And, finally, here’s Craig Bell, another 6-foot-plus wideout with speed.

Our good pal Duffer came to town for a business trip. Oh, who are we kidding? He came to play golf with Riley Wallace, who’s in town until Monday. So, naturally, we decided to eat with Duffer and his son.

It was only three days ago SteveM was in the hospital. Look at how healthy he appears now:

And then SteveM goes out and eats this:

Here’s JoJe (or is it JeJo), the daughter of JoJo and JeJe. At age 11, she might be our youngest blog reader:

Cannot sleep because of that damned story in the news tonight about the Kaneohe Marine tossing the puppy off the cliff. Stuff like that is easy to avoid when reading, but not so in watching the news. Kim Genaula (sp), KGMB anchor, said that they couldn’t show the entire video but what was shown was enough to make me sick. I closed my eyes and all I could see was that puppy and imagining what was going to happen next.

STEPHEN: When is the next workout? If it’s tomorrow, I may be able to get away from the workshop a little early to check things out, so to speak. If it’s Friday, I know I can make it because my last meeting is over at 1 pm.

Let’s try it again – good night everyone.

    SteveM,
Good to see you are back in business at the Kaukau line…

    Stephen,
Did Maka graduate with his B.S. in Math (last month)?
If so, do you know if he is going to pursue a Masters in Math?
    That’s one akamai dude…

    Good morning everyone in sleepland!!!

Some people lose weight in the hospital, but not true Tsai-Kos as proven by SteveM.
Very happy to see that he looks back to normal and is eating something potent and garlicky.

Thing have really changed since the WB started, in the old days, fans on the mainland never knew who quit or was cut or suspended or just plain left the team.

We never knew what happened in the off season and would be surprised when we saw the team on TV, whether it was unis, plays or the roster.
    Thanks ST

  25. Garret June 12, 2008 5:16 am

    ST,

Thank you for the photos from the meal, especially the one showing SteveM!

Thank you for the photos from the practice session. You are correct that Pollard hasn’t been mentioned much this offseason, but that could change based on the result of Fall camp.

  26. las vegas June 12, 2008 5:16 am

  27. Garret June 12, 2008 5:19 am

    ST,

Interesting updates on the team. Sad to hear about the final news on Keenan and that Maka’s situation isn’t looking great right now. It seems to me that Maka’s situation warrants another year, but if there are paperwork problems then it could be problematic.

Congratulations to Dowling for going on scholarship!

  28. Garret June 12, 2008 5:21 am

Bess update! Looks like Bess has a real shot at Miami’s #4 WR spot.

Aside from those three, all bets are off for the remaining receivers on the roster. Greg Camarillo is beloved for making the game-winning catch in last season’s only win, an overtime triumph over Baltimore; but other than that, he’s just an average-at-best receiver. Three-year veteran David Kircus was signed in February, but he’s already injured and will have a tough time beating out the crop of rookie receivers who are battling for a spot on the 53-man roster.

On that note, the Dolphins currently have five rookies competing for a permanent receiver or practice squad position. Davone Bess, from Hawaii, has had an impressive offseason, and he’s an early favorite. Beyond that, there’s Jayson Foster, Justin Wynn, Selwyn Lymon and the recently signed John Dunlap, all of whom are undrafted rookies who haven’t had the time to prove themselves.

  29. Garret June 12, 2008 5:22 am

Miami’s #3 guy didn’t have a great season last year, which means that if Bess earns the #4 spot and the #3 guy continues to struggle, Bess could move to #3 and end up with a LOT of playing time.

Although a close race, Derek Hagan is the potential No. 3 guy in the Dolphins’ receiver hierarchy. He posted a forgettable 29 grabs for 373 yards and a pair of TDs last year. Add a severe case of inconsistent hands to those stats, and you’ve got a guy who has something to prove in the upcoming season. If he continues to impress the new regime of coaches, there’s a legitimate shot for Hagan to surpass Wilford as the team’s second receiver.

  30. Garret June 12, 2008 5:23 am

Shaq may be beginning a new venture.

He has dubbed himself Superman, the Diesel, the Big Aristotle and Shaq-Fu among other nicknames.

If Shaquille O’Neal’s latest proposed venture works out, he might also become known as the Big Fannie Mae.

O’Neal told the Orlando Sentinel that he wanted to help people facing foreclosure on their homes.

“I want to come in not to kick them out, but to work with them and save them so they can stay in their homes,” O’Neal said during a visit to Orlando City Hall.

Attorney Mark NeJame told the Sentinel that O’Neal wants to buy the mortgages of homeowners who have slipped into foreclosure because of high interest rates. The Phoenix Suns center would sell the homes back with more affordable terms, hoping to make a small profit.

“He’s become a businessman with a conscience,” NeJame said.

O’Neal remains conscious of opportunity: According to the Sentinel, he would like to develop a TV reality show based on his Orlando project and call it “Shaq’s Big Save,” a sequel to a 2007 weight-loss show, “Shaq’s Big Challenge.”

  31. Garret June 12, 2008 5:25 am

Interesting that the SEC does not do well when they travel to Pac-10 schools.

SEC fans usually have a good laugh at those folks who talk up West Coast football.

As former Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe once told our own Ace Reporter, Jimmy Hyams, Pac-10 teams simply don’t play great defense.

But if you look at the numbers I’ve dug up, you’ll see that their high-flying offenses have more than made up for their cheapjack defenses in recent tussles with SEC foes.

    Especially on the West Coast.

Since 1998 (that’s the last 10 seasons), SEC teams are just 3-6 when traveling to play games west of Arizona.

Take out two LSU wins in the state of Arizona, limit things to states that border the Pacific, and the SEC is only 1-6 in their last seven games.

The Verdict: As tempting as it is for SEC fans to scoff at the idea of West Coast “finesse” offenses being able to poke holes in Southern-fried defenses… the fact of the matter is that they have in the past.

And the closer to the Pacific Ocean SEC teams get, the more likely they’ll get bombed by West Coast fireworks.

Article about the tough financial times coming for non-BCS-conference schools.

Like the homeowner who is overextended in a high-interest mortgage or the trucker now going bankrupt because high fuel prices cut into his bottom line, a time of reckoning — and some tough decisions — may be coming for college football’s mid-majors.

And, no, the answer may not be a little more BCS access.

The answer may be to finally face up to the truth they’ve denied for so long and stop spending taxpayer money in an effort to be something they are not — and never will be.

    Harsh?

Sure, but these are harsh times that may become harsher. What NCAA President Miles Brand has described as a ‘quiet crisis’ could get a lot louder as the economic bad news continues to mount in academia.

The’ve spent the past decade or so in an arms race for facilities and coaching salaries that far exceeds their means. When 100 of the 119 Division I-A athletic programs ran deficits in 2006, it’s pretty safe to assume some of the deepest shades of red could be found in leagues like Conference USA, the Sun Belt and the WAC. The revenue from attendance simply doesn’t measure up to the escalating costs of doing business and it is not offset by television revenue. Many of these schools have had to double their overall athletics budgets over the past decade, but that does not come with a corresponding spike in attendance.

And it’s probably going to get much worse.

Now these schools are being hit by escalating fuel costs that are certain to run up more red ink. And rising tuition costs will increase taxpayer or university subsidies required to balance the books.

    FUUD REVIEW
Primarily Prime, Southpoint Hotel & Casino

    Some good-some bad

Friday the 13th is Mrs lv’s birthday so we and the Yonamines celabrated midweek.

Bread on the table was a semi hard sourdough with a perfectly crusty outside, I had to stop everyone after 2 slices or no room for the actual dinner.

For appetizers we had the onion rings and potato skins (sadly the filet migon sliders have been discontinued)
O-rings were alright but the p-skins were a hit with the ladies, with several cheeses, salsa and just a hint of chili, very flavorful.

Soup of the day was split pea, I chose the salad, fresh greens with a tangy homemade Italian dressing.

Three of us opted for the South Point Cut which was a bargain at just 13.95
Mr. Y had the Blackened Cajun Style, which was a little spicy very good too 15.95

Portions were generous and left us no room for dessert, maybe next time.

Total bill, including bar tab came out to $102 + change

My biggest disapointment was when I paid the waiter, I put 120 in the folder and never received change back.
The dumb waiter shorted himself as I had intended to leave 30 bucks on the table, instead by just keeping the change, he ended up with 17-18 bucks.

Saved me money, although I hope I don’t get him next time, might spit in the food. Yuck

    Great Morning All.

Never good to hear about failings of any Warrior but it seems as though Keenan Jones had ample opportunity to right his own ship before his voyage with the team ended. Best wishes to him nonetheless.

It seems like UH has never had a group of wideouts with as much height as this current one. Another area where progress seems to be happening.

Great fuud pics by the Blog Host. Good to see SteveM in high spirits and healthy (?) appetite. Just sorry that I wasn’t able to be there to meet Duffer and Duffer, Jr.

It’s going to be kinda worrisome to see the effect that these fuel costs will have on future scheduling for the team as these other mid-majors try to balance their budgets. Heck, for that matter, who knows the effect it’ll have right here in the WAC!

  39. Annoddah Dave June 12, 2008 6:40 am

    Nice pix!
    Hiya duffer!

Wish we had some PL videos of the workouts… but as the universe revolves around the Warriors (yes it does), the lack thereof just serves the under the radar mode that we have going in the off-season. Small sacrifice.

    Stretch-

    basic marketing tactic- Sex Sells.

Free pics of young, testosterone coursing, strapping men parading half naked on your blog is an easy way to boost viewership count. As much as we’d like to believe mostly guys reads this blog, there’s four times as much Tsai-kettes that lurk.

Take note: No mo too much pics here of shirtless D-line blalaz trampling up and down the field baking and sweating under the hot afternoon sun. Not sexy, as why.

Show of hands- who wants to see more pics of the big boys who unselfishly do all grunt work and get no respect all so that the pretty boys can shine?

  54. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 7:34 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko Nation.

The Blog is getting better and better and so is the team it seems. What a high number of studs we have available is amazing, receivers and DB’s and everything else. The big mystery is still the O-Line, we don’t hear much about them.

I’m biting my fingernails while waiting for this season to kick in.

  55. MeiLing June 12, 2008 7:35 am

ST ~ Great pics! Steele Jz looks buff. Great fuuuuud pics & those of the Tsaikos!

    Wha’ happen to Keenan?

good day to be in good health, fine spirits and no place like Hawai’i Nei.

    enjoy da music

  57. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 7:41 am

    Bonar is correct.
UH will rotate the receivers. It was something Lee wanted to do more of last season. It makes sense with the amount of running they do.
Coming out of spring camp, the No. 1s were: left wideout Greg Salas, left slotback Michael Washington, right slotback Aaron Bain and right wideout Malcolm Lane.
Kealoha Pilares is going to push for time at right slotback, and Daniel Lofton, Craig Bell, Mike Tinoco, Joe Avery, Royce Pollard and Dylan Linkner will push for time at wideout.
Bell and Tinoco are the only new receivers out there. The next wave shows up for Summer Session II in the first week of July.

  58. July Jones June 12, 2008 7:43 am

Jantz looks like Withy-Allen…Rausch has the follow-through and back leg raise June use to drool about. Funaki and Graunke both have been at the U longer but its a new system for all. Alexander looks like an out of shape veteran with limited mobility. Austin is in a Cast. Should be an interesting battle. Stick Nokz back there to keep the fans coming in and just hand the ball to Libre and Heun. LWJ still showed his vision isnt the best and is hesitant to hit the whole at full speed.
Is E.Sione out the question at QB and are there any signs of him at unofficial trainings. All local kids should be there busting tale reppin for the islands.

  59. koakane™ June 12, 2008 7:51 am

eh asports change da name we know das you 😀 bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  60. bonar June 12, 2008 7:53 am

Thanks ST! Good luck to Keenan. Got a lot of talent, albeit raw, out there. Good news on Bess. With G’s story on Coach Lee being hyped as one of the top receiver coaches, it looks like UH will continue to attract great receiver talent.

  61. bonar June 12, 2008 7:54 am

Congratulations Jameel! Looks like JA can put on another 10 pounds easily!

  65. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 8:09 am

    Aloja to you also, Koakane.

What was the guys name in the old days who always said that with his heavy spanish accent? I can see him, but can’t remember his name.

  66. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 8:17 am

    Sione won’t be a quarterback.
Actually, Steele has done some pretty good things, like going through progresssions and hitting second receivers. He has a redshirt year, so he’ll probably use it.
I like the way Rausch passes. Really quick release and nice touch.
Alexander is a big guy. He can wing it.
I’d say, based on the spring and the workouts, that Funaki is ahead of everybody else. That could change, but that’s the way it appears right now.

  67. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 8:18 am

By the way, July is correct about the back-leg raise.
That was one of the first things Pride Period noticed when he saw Rausch throw.

  73. Stretch June 12, 2008 8:26 am

koakane – geeeeez, with the kids away, the administrators play.

  74. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 8:28 am

So, Rausch has the back leg lift, hmmm, will he be the anointed one? Funaki is a fighter, he’s been too modest in the past, it’s good to see him asserting himself.

  75. Da Punchbowl Kid June 12, 2008 8:46 am

Funaki’s leadership is a vital asset to the team. This team may have lots of leadership, many players are stand up guys. I think that’s going to help them a lot in the long run, making the difference between a so so season and a good one.

  76. koakane™ June 12, 2008 8:52 am

geeeeez, with the kids away, the administrators play

  79. (Jesse) James June 12, 2008 9:02 am

Good morning Tsaikos….almost time to go to work…just stopping by for a bit.

Stretch – I, to, worry about all the shirtless pictures of Steel Jantz ST has…..hmmmm, makes you wonder…..now if they were set as his screensaver, that would be an indication….MWAHAHAHAHAHA

A-joe – you’re correct that QBs are the sex symbols of football. Us “D” duys used to always talk about the “prima donnas” on offense….LMAO

KK – Stretch is right, when there are no kids around, administrators must have it easy……oh, and it was a miracle the other night that all you drank was water…..BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

  80. (Jesse) James June 12, 2008 9:05 am

KK – call me later this afternoon. I have meetings to attend most of the day.

  83. (Jesse) James June 12, 2008 9:06 am

  84. al June 12, 2008 9:14 am

    two more weeks!

and yes that food is always a good deal. duffer’s boy looked like one puppy who just overate as he sat slumped with his eyes glazed over unable to mutter a sound.

  90. whitey June 12, 2008 9:44 am

Good morning Tsaikos. A little late getting started, but am truly impressed with what this year’s wideouts look like. With their height and speed, they will do some damage and instead of having 3 or 4 1000 yds receivers, there are going to be a bunch.

Also the “bunch” look like they had plenty of fuud and hopefully the service was faster than Dennys. hahahaaaaaaahhhhh.

al, yes, i did miss out by staying home and missed the opportunity to meet some of the “super” Tsaikos (including the chief).

Well, gotto get on my wheels and get ready for a game at noon. You all take care and have a great day in paradise.

  91. Jason June 12, 2008 10:02 am

What is this about dinner last night? Eh, I couldn’t make it anyways, I had church, and then I was busy setting up my new computer. But it looked like fun!

I haven’t had a chance to watch the QBs throw in person yet, but I have to say it again: From what I saw on film, I love Rausch. As long as he gains some weight, learns the offense, and shows he can go through his progressions, I think he has the ability to be really special.

And I really like Avery and Pollard. Although I still think Avery can put on a little bit
    more weight too.

And I wanted to say a quick thing about what Marlis was talking about today. There is less football talk than last year, true, but if you recall, last summer was all about Herman Frazier, so there was a lot to talk about with regards to that. Right now, all that’s going on is unsupervised workouts. It’s nice that we get pictures and short tidbits about what’s going on, but there’s usually not that much to say — or at least, there hasn’t been much to say until recently. As we’re learning more about the new players, I think football talk will start to increase. Even today, we’re seeing more of that.

  102. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 12:18 pm

Oh, man. I have to read this blog to find out our paper’s getting sued.
Actually, this is all pretty unfortunate. I like all of the parties involved: Jeanne, Emil and Pati.

  103. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 12:21 pm

Hey, I wasn’t invited last night, either.
    I have a proof. There’s an e-mail that says: Stephen isn’t invited.
But if I only went to places where I was invited, I’d never go any place at all.
Anyway, there’s a calendar on SteveM’s site about activities.
We have the Rich/Ronnie gathering on June 19, bowling on June 21, and the second anniversary party on July10.
Everyone is invited. Well, maybe people need to check on the availability of the Rich/Ronnie gathering since there are space limitations.
    Call me if you’re unsure.

  104. Dennis Halloran June 12, 2008 12:28 pm

    ST…wot u tink, u suga…..going melt…

  110. Rich2176 June 12, 2008 12:54 pm

    Howdy All –

I just realized today is Thursday and Ronnie is on her way home. That means I’ve got 4 days to get 3 weeks worth of stuff done. (Yes, including golf tomorrow.)

Shoutout to the folks who said “boo” last night from the party. Our blog host has a unique way of putting people on the spot. Can’t wait to meet you next week.

Uhhh….Steele Jantz is a freshman? Appropriate name.

Stretch – email me re: golf on either Wed or Thursday. I still have to figure out how to get to Maui from Kona on the 21st without stops or cashing in one of my retirement accounts.

    Laterz

  111. Stretch June 12, 2008 12:55 pm

can’t wait for the Ching Field to be pau but it has to start first.

  112. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:05 pm

Not to sound like Jason or any other Brainiac, but does sugar melt in the sun? Or does it caramelize?

  113. J-DOG June 12, 2008 1:10 pm

Has Maka’s scholarship been given to another player? or are they waiting for the final decision from the NCAA?

  114. Stretch June 12, 2008 1:11 pm

    isn’t melted sugar caramel??

  115. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:15 pm

    j-dog:
they’re still waiting. but they’re not hopeful.
so, dowling got a scholarship, and grasso and fonoti are getting ones in the fall. i assume that libre and bain also will be getting scholarships.
and there’s some debate about jantz.

  116. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:15 pm

so is caramel better than sugar?

  117. False Pordagee June 12, 2008 1:16 pm

    ST and Stretch

I not one brainiac like J boy but melting suga and wata makes candy…wen u add da cream, das wat make da caramel.

  118. J-DOG June 12, 2008 1:16 pm

    thanks ST.

  119. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:16 pm

Anyway, I always thought the phrase should be: “You think you’re going to melt in the rain? What are you, cotton candy?”

  120. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:17 pm

By the way, after the recent lawsuit, we all should refer to the blogger as False Portuguese.

  121. Rich2176 June 12, 2008 1:20 pm

I went to the new Simpsons ride yesterday at Universal Studios. In addition to cotton candy, there was both flannel and linen candy….go figure….

Next time I’m at Camellia, I get to share the grill with jojo. Right jojo? You don’t have to cook… I’ll supervise the food searing and you only operate the chopsticks.

Peaches complained she has radiant heat burns on her cooking hand. (James and I kinda cranked up the flames). 🙁

  127. LizKauai [Believer] June 12, 2008 1:42 pm

OK- SteveM. Please add my nephew and his wife to the OSU game gang. Tom and Jen.

  129. Da Punchbowl Kid June 12, 2008 1:50 pm

    Stretch,
Read your #123 carefully a few times. You sure you don’t have a better analogy?

  130. Rich2176 June 12, 2008 1:51 pm

    Hey Liz –

Most of what burned were false front buildings. The good thing is that the studio has a lot of carpenters & painters….LOL.

  131. LizKauai [Believer] June 12, 2008 1:51 pm

My favorite caramel is the crust of a creme brulee or the “sauce” for flan.

  132. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 1:54 pm

    Started the countdown yet, Rich2176?

  133. LizKauai [Believer] June 12, 2008 1:55 pm

Rich2176- That’s good news. I was thinking that there were lots of computers and hydraulics involved in the “rides” that were lost.

    Burning sets is the norm.
My first job after the second batch of kids was art dept. coord. for Outbreak. We built a perfect African village with real items as props (I spent hours procuring natural fiber rope for lashings!) and then burned it for the scene.

  139. bonar June 12, 2008 3:01 pm

Just saw an article regarding Tennessee’s depth chart. Unfortunately, right now JR is 10th out of the 11 receivers in camp. Hopefully, JR can prove he’s worthy to be given shot at this level, if not with Tennessee, then with another team. Part of the difficulty with him might be the nagging injuries he’s been suffering.

  140. Kazz June 12, 2008 3:07 pm

    I second the question above.

Any word as to when construction on the field itself at the Ching Complex will start seeing as they are projecting an October 2008 completion time?

  141. False Portuguese June 12, 2008 3:16 pm

okay gangeez…gotta bag soon….get ready for some festivities…

  142. Jason June 12, 2008 3:24 pm

SteveM, you provide Mac/Apple service, right?

    Happy Birthday, Ryan!!!

  146. bonar June 12, 2008 4:28 pm

Good bio yesterday Chad! I rarely get to the Kahala Mall simply because of the long drive. HA! But, the next time I am home I will look for the two restaurants!

  148. Stephen Tsai June 12, 2008 5:40 pm

So, how come nobody else joined me at practice today?

  149. marlis June 12, 2008 5:44 pm

Re-Why I picked Funaki to start the season opener.

Why I think Funaki should start the Florida game is because situationally it gives what I think is a better chance for UH to win. To counter Florida’s fast defense the QB has to be a big part of the running game. Give Funaki a lot of touches in this game. And running at Florida’s strength is what the text book tells you to do. Design draws, bootlegs, option play, keepers anything from allowing Florida to sit back timing the cadence and sacking and hurrying the QB, like Georgia did. Looking at how Air Force beat Notre Dame 40 to 14 (or so) last year with basically smash ball running philosophy negated Notre Dames speed and athleticism’s. And this is the precedence in which UH should start the game with Funaki.

Keeping Florida guessing in this game is important. Having Funaki in different situations. Selling the run. And throwing could set up some long gainers passing. And then bringing in Tyler selling the pass and instead running would confuse the defense. You have to show run, and then pass. But if it’s strictly going to be pass, then expect a repeat of what happened in Georgia. Of all the QB’s Funaki is best suited to complement the running game. With Huen and Farmer blocking. And Leon taking a few pitches. And mixing in Libre at SB misdirection plays could surprise their defense. And keeping them guessing is the buzz word for this game.

The first 15 offensive plays of this game are important. It sets the momentum for the defense and special teams. Getting out to a fast start is important. But what’s of greater importance is laying a foundation where their defense is stymied. And has to stop and think about either the pass or run. What you don’t want to see is the Florida defense high fiving on the side lines celebrating 3 and outs and sacks. And their fans cheering louder for every good defensive play.

Having the Florida DC pulling out his hair is what you what to see if your a UH fan. Passing play after passing play he knows his defense can stop UH, but if he sees us establishing the run with Funaki not only will he be in for a long afternoon. But even the Florida defense will, too.

For this reason I pick Funaki. I think he can put the added this added dimension into this game. And situationally of all the QB he is the best suited where the Florida defense would have to play honest to both the run and pass.

  150. Barry Markowitz June 12, 2008 5:49 pm

bighilofan2: Coach McMackin knows every move Coach Jones is making in Samoa…in fact they are going together. The population of Samoa is approxiamately 230,000, then there is the population of American Samoa at around 55,000. One can never isolate American Samoa from Samoa (Independent Nation, formerly known as Western Samoa) because due to family ties and dual citizenships (Abe is US, NZ, & Samoa), you can have kids jump off the boat and be ready to play for an American Samoa high school unexpectedly. I have one nephew who is two years younger than Abe, who has a Samoan father with US Citizenship who jumped off the plane in Kansas 2 years ago…and now he is a hot recruit for both KU and Kansas State. He is a straight “A” student, is as big as Abe and plays both ways.

  151. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 5:58 pm

    marlias (150),

Well thought out, not much to argue against in your piece. The only thing I would say here is that Ron Lee, as far as what I know of him, probably thinks along similar lines in offensive planning for the Gators. About Funaki, I also agree in principle exept, as of now, we don’t know enough about the others. I’m sure, at least I hope, the coaches will know their available talent intimately and divise a plan of attack accordingly.

One thing’s for sure, it’s nail biting time until kick-off. I can’t wait ’til fall camp to see what shakes out and who steps up.

I totally agree that we have to keep the Gators guessing, we can not repeat the folly of the SB or we get killed.

  152. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 6:03 pm

    OOps, marlis.

  153. marlis June 12, 2008 6:10 pm

    Ted

I see your point. Even as I’m writing I was getting excited. Your right this should be very exciting time leading up to the game. And especially if the players that we don’t know to much about turn to be big surprises.

  154. Kazz June 12, 2008 6:28 pm

    Stephen Tsai:

So, how come nobody else joined me at practice today?

    😡

  155. Kazz June 12, 2008 6:30 pm

    FloridaTed,

I think the nail-biting times are on hold for me… Lord knows we all had plenty of those last year.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I am ready to greet the Florida game and the entire season with a smile and a local swagger with arms wide open to the side as if to say “WOT?!?!?!”.

I no can wait, no can aureydee!!!

  156. Kazz June 12, 2008 6:36 pm

Again, I forgot to add to the above that the addition of our new Warriors this summer makes it feel like Spring again.

The air is still filled with all kinds of emotions things to look forward to in the immediate future like the “Game On UH Fundraiser”, fall ball, then finally kick off.

For those not a part of this blog I guess I can see how some may not feel so upbeat (no pun intended) about everything especially with the uphill battle we are faced with in 2008, as far as the schedule goes, but Warrior Football is more than just ‘something’ to do on a Saturday, it represents our passion for everything we love in our everyday lives.

At the risk of sounding redundant it’s all things local: tailgating, making “bruddah-bruddah” with strangers, getting re-aquainted with old friends, making new friends, and coming together to create and unstoppable force.

“Pupukahi i holomua” – united to move forward!!!!

  157. Kazz June 12, 2008 6:56 pm

At the risk of sounding like a fool.

I remember D1 saying what time the Florida game would around 12:30…

But I assume that is Florida time?!?!?!?

Ahem…. Is Ige’s open for EARLY EARLY breakfast at 4am?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!

  158. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 7:20 pm

    Kazz, (158),

Unfortunately it is Florida time. It’s gonna be like being in an broiler oven., but the game is tevised on Raycom here, otherwise I have no idea why it’s not played at night. It’s nuts and it will be just as tough on the Gators, nobody get’s “used” to this kind of Sauna heat. Our newfound depth will come in very handy, so is our coaches new attitude about substitutions.

The best part of this season? Nobody expects anything from us, no bullseye and we’re ready to shock. For some strange reason, I’m even more excited this season than last. Bring ’em on, bring them all on, the Hawaii Warriors will be ready to battle, anywhere, anytime.

  159. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 7:22 pm

    marlis,

If some of the newcomers end up starting, that would actually be a good sign, they would have to be very good to beat out our returning players.

Marlis and Fl Ted: Nice discussion. I wonder whether to what extent the offense will be run out of the shotgun. Remember, too, that Coach Lee runs the more traditional run and shoot with a heavy emphasis on roll outs. Will the OL be up to the task?

Hi Ted! I’m thinkin- if Hawaii fans had the confidence that UH not only had a chance to win in the Swamp but also to WIN BIG – would more of them attend the game???

To me, this is BCS II, the revenge.

After this year, ain’t nobody gonna be whinin and moanin and cryin SOS, SOS.
The Gators are goin DOWN and the Warriors will be bowling again at the end of the year.

  175. bonar June 12, 2008 8:45 pm

unfortunately, the cost of traveling, I believe, will prevent a lot of people from attending. confidence or not, many people would attend just for the experience offered by such a unique game-if the price were right.

  176. bonar June 12, 2008 8:52 pm

Couldn’t make it to your party, but congrats Abe!

  177. FloridaTed June 12, 2008 9:16 pm

    Liz,

It’s a monstrous trip to Florida and costly. Many fans are still paying for the SB, If we get our 4,000 I’m very happy. The Warriors will shock the Gators.

    bonar (170),

Re: Offense. I don’t think they will try and show any kind of pattern at all. If I were Ron Lee, I would mix it up enough as to not show any kind of pattern, Pass from under center, run from the shot gun, some Heun and libre/LWJ combos, send the RB’s flaring into slots and so on. Their pass defense is still their weakest point. Their O-Line is very talented, but also extremely young with two freshmen. Their DB’s wll be better, but they were bad last year. Last in the SEC in pass Defense.

Our defense will hold their own, knowing McMackin he will have a great plan, but the offense has to come out agressive and pound. If we can get a jump on them, we have more than a good chance. We don’t want to play catch up and have the crowd drowning us out.

  178. Garret June 12, 2008 9:50 pm

Miami’s coach was quite positive about Bess today! Today was their last offseason practice as a team, so it is nice for Bess to be one of the people praised…they will have to cut a few players to make room for draft picks and late signings, but I’m positive Bess will not be cut. I’m worried about Rivers, Hawthorne, and (to a lesser extent) RGM, but I’m sure that Bess will at least make the roster.

‘There are a couple of guys that I’ve been pleased with that way that I think that maybe have a chance to, down the road, make this football team if they do the right things,” Sparano said.

“I like where Toribio is. I like where [cornerback Scorpio] Babers is. Those kind of guys; certainly a kid like [center Mike] Byrne, who’s a smart guy that’s played in the middle. So they’re guys that have been out here.

“They’ve done a ton of work since they’ve been here right now and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with what they’ve done to date. I like [wide receiver Davone] Bess. He’s a guy that is a undrafted guy that’s out here and has made a lot of plays.

The season is 13 games long.

Fall camp is for putting in YOUR system and finding out who’s going to run it best.

As far as I know, UH is planning to use the R&S. If the team spends a lot of time putting in plays other than the R&S they risk losing the whole season. Watch this video with the former coach and Bob Davie discussing one of the most basic plays in the R&S. Then imagine how much time needs to be spent in fall camp just perfecting that small part of the offense with a new QB and 4 new receivers.

To bring in a scheme that is gonna use option, bootlegs and keepers is gonna take away time from doing what the new OC has been teaching since the 70’s. Teams who use those schemes are spending THEIR entire fall camps implementing that kind of offense for their ENTIRE season. I don’t see this coaching staff seeing that they have the time to spend on very much more than what they do best.

  192. GaPeach June 12, 2008 11:27 pm

Too bad KOW decided not to go to the practice today – hope there’ll be some pix posted by Stephen as he’ll be the only one to let us know what went on.

After turning in the proposal to the National Science Foundation, I thought my boss could give me a break for awhile. After all, my paper to the MILCOM conference isn’t due until next week–my calendar said it was due Wednesday, which gave me more than enough time to write a good paper.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the paper is due on *Monday*. And we have a birthday party on Saturday and an all-day Legoland thing with friends on Sunday. So, it looks like I won’t be getting a break for awhile!

Turns out that Wednesday is the deadline for the next proposal we are submitting. So, I guess I can’t relax until next Thursday…I can’t believe all of the deadlines are within a week of each other! The next proposal deadline I have is in *December*.
