    Sweet!

  2. Andrew November 27, 2015 4:58 pm

I’m shocked. Really thought was gonna be between Jones and Miano

  3. Come on, man! November 27, 2015 4:58 pm

That hiring announcement was like IMMEDIATE.

  4. Bryson November 27, 2015 5:00 pm

I can see why Hawaii chose him…Matlin wanted youth but also wanted an offense that would allow us to compete…What’s gonna be interesting now is who his assistants are gonna be…

  5. Andrew November 27, 2015 5:01 pm

I wonder how much of Nevadas offense was influenced by Polleon.

  6. WarriorMojo November 27, 2015 5:02 pm

ST, how long have you been carrying that half-eaten candy around waiting for just this moment?

People are complaining already I see, but I’m good with this. I wanted Rolo the last time around for any number of reasons. (Where is Prideperiod, these days by the way? He was another who wanted Rolo back then.)

  7. oneseason November 27, 2015 5:02 pm

Sounds like a good choice to me. I look forward to renewing my season tickets.

  8. Old School Dave November 27, 2015 5:05 pm

Congrats to Coach Rolovich. Time to get to work, put your staff together, and hit the recruiting trail. It’s a new beginning!

  9. H-Man November 27, 2015 5:06 pm

Congrats to Rolo. Key now is who Rolo hires as his offensive and defensive coordinators.

  10. hitmanhart November 27, 2015 5:09 pm

    oh boi !! sorry guy !! hope a 3 year deal !! no 5 year deal !!

  11. al November 27, 2015 5:10 pm

Ah…once again those little birdies tell no lies.

Roll out the Rolo era. Best candidate available.

  12. Old School Dave November 27, 2015 5:11 pm

Rolovich’s DC, OC, and position coaches will be crucial. The salary pool is $1.1 million for 9 coaches (last figure that I heard). Youth, energy, being a relentless recruiter, and using social media/technology will be important. AD Dave Matlin wanted his “own guy”and got that in Rolovich.

  13. al November 27, 2015 5:11 pm

    Rolo will run the offense.

  14. Buffoman November 27, 2015 5:14 pm

Not one I would have chosen, but I will support his tenure as our leader. I am anxious to see what his staff will look like.

  15. WarriorMojo November 27, 2015 5:14 pm

Rolo, welcome home. I think Coach Cav is ready for a return as well. Give him a call. Unfortunately, Riley is not doing well at Nebraska.

  16. What R U Tinkin November 27, 2015 5:17 pm

Was this Economics? High Flying offense to get Cheeks in the Seats? Does he have the players now for his offense? Hmm can he keep the local talent from leaving?

    Only time will tell.

  17. WarriorMojo November 27, 2015 5:18 pm

Also, tip of the cap to AD Matlin. He is obviously his own man. Easiest thing in BB would have been to hire Benji, but he went with Ganot. Easiest thing now would have been to hire JJ, but he went with Rolo. He has a vision and will follow it through.

  18. Dennis Halloran November 27, 2015 5:18 pm

    congrats Rolo,
    Nowhere to go but up
    Recruit 10 offensive lineman
Get Eric Barriere, The QB from La Habra HS
    Pray for Donors $

  19. Fei Jai November 27, 2015 5:19 pm

Not my choice for the next HC for my beloved UH, but a HC I can get behind and support because: (1) UH alum; (2) young; (3) has a good record of success as a player at UH and a decent record of success as a coach.

Welcome home Rolo and may you have much success as our next HC.

  20. Fei Jai November 27, 2015 5:21 pm

    So relieved it wasn’t June.

  21. Old School Dave November 27, 2015 5:22 pm

I wonder how QB Aaron Zwahlen will fit into Rolo’s offense? Should provide some interesting possibilities and be an interesting Spring Ball. Perhaps sign a JUCO QB to increase the competition. The Defensive Coordinator will be crucial hire. Hope the boosters can come through with upping the salaries of assistants.

  22. RB November 27, 2015 5:23 pm

OH boy ALL the JJ supporters are going be pissed. LMAO……. Rolo should bring Lelie back home to coach the WR.

  23. graham November 27, 2015 5:25 pm

Hoping that Rolo will bring in Timmy Chang as QB coach and o-coordinator.

  24. Old Diver November 27, 2015 5:26 pm

Be great watching a modern college offense again.

  25. graham November 27, 2015 5:27 pm

#21- I agree %100. That would be awesome

  26. Maddog50 November 27, 2015 5:27 pm

Surprised- said I’d support and support I will. Asst will be critical but I think a couple are here if they want to be. We need some defense period. I like points but don’t like giving up what we have been for several years now. Last really solid D was 2010-lets get back! We need a bunch of big bodies in the trenches and some quicks and speed, but hey it’s done let’s move the needle

  27. hitmanhart November 27, 2015 5:29 pm

oh well !! best of luck rolo !! let see how much people you and AD Dave Matlin can put back in the seats !!
AD Dave Matlin so far you been have not been keeping your word !! you said on the radio show had to be someone that has been there as a head coach !!and was your choice and your choice only !! one thing people of hawaii dont forget !! if this does not work they will be calling for get you out !!

  28. hitmanhart November 27, 2015 5:37 pm

hope he can get some good coach to help !!

  29. Kifi November 27, 2015 5:46 pm

Al’s little birdies said that before Chow was hired, Rolo attempted to get an interview but was denied. He had already put a staff in place to present to the search committee. His OC was going to be Adrian Klemm and DC was going to be Jeff Ulbrich. Unfortunately at this point both ships have already sailed. Both are making way too much coin to walk away from UCLA and the Atlanta Falcons respectively. Will be interesting to see who he is able to get now at the low salaries that Hawaii offers. Might be able to get guys like Timmy Chang, Darnell Arceneux, Brian Norwood, or Ikaika Malloe. Certainly someone like Vae Tata would be a good get.

  30. mileHIwarrior November 27, 2015 5:49 pm

I like it! Welcome home Coach Rolo! Things are looking up already. Can’t wait to see how everything works out. More interested now, to see how the team does tomorrow knowing who the next coach is. Let the Rolo era begin!

  31. DaMenehune November 27, 2015 5:56 pm

Wanted JJ but Rolo was a close 2nd.
Al, you and I may have same birdie!!

  32. Kifi November 27, 2015 5:57 pm

Your coaching staff needs recruiters. •Inner city LAX, San Diego, and Oakland. •San Diego, Orange County, Valley, Northern Cal. •Poly’s from Cali, Texas, Utah, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand. Also someone with access to Austrailia.

Cory Batoon should be added to the staff. He has been instrumental in putting ‘Ole Miss at the top of the recruiting standings in the SEC.

  33. Frannyk November 27, 2015 5:59 pm

I can’t see a new recruit saying “Wow I wanna go to Hawaii, because Nick Rolovich is their new coach”!

Bad choice! No HC experience. Unproven. And remember how he dissed Hawaii by putting the Rolo candies on our ‘H’ logo after Nevada beat Hawaii? No class!

He better produce quickly or Aloha Stadium will be even more empty. I’m very disappointed. WTFE!

  34. AllG November 27, 2015 6:00 pm

Great hire Rolo was the best candidate. Our offense will be fun to watch! Hope he brings in Ulbrich as DC. We don’t need a OC which should save us some money.

  35. Kifi November 27, 2015 6:00 pm

I’m quite jealous of Al and his access to birdies. Although I believe that between Tsai and Kekaula, they know everything way ahead of time but have to bite their collective tongues.

  36. AllG November 27, 2015 6:03 pm

Bet Franny was happy when we signed Chow since he is a big name. Rolo has a great offensive mine and is a young coach we can build this program with. Name is not everything

  37. NotNasti November 27, 2015 6:09 pm

Interesting choice. Would have liked to see an established HC, but my choice out of the five finalists. I believe $$ heavily influenced who we could get.

  38. 3-Prong November 27, 2015 6:21 pm

The die has been cast. Matlin has made his choice.

Disappointed since the HANA HO’U was our’s for the taking, but will support Rolo all the way. LET’S GO BOWS!

  39. 3-Prong November 27, 2015 6:22 pm

    Oh!!! JJ FOR OC! hehe..

  40. Buffoman November 27, 2015 6:22 pm

I hope he does not attempt to be the offense coordinator. He has no head coaching experience and needs to be an administrator first. Chow tried and failed. Being a good judge of talent in selecting a staff and delegating would, in my opinion be a better way to commence as a new head coach.

  41. Frannyk November 27, 2015 6:22 pm

    AllG#34.

    I stated my case.

JJ is proven winner, has been a HC in the NFL, he’s a great recruiter, can assess talent, can develop that talent, (Just look at what he did with Ikaika Alama-Francis) can form an experienced coaching staff, has NFL ties AND the ability to put people in the seats.

You said that a name is not everything. It’s not JJ’s name. It’s what he brings to the table.

What has Rolo done? Your comment is short sighted at best.

  42. Trunks420 November 27, 2015 6:26 pm

Maybe he can bring Dave Schramm on as Offense coordinator he should bring new life to the offense.

  43. seewhy November 27, 2015 6:27 pm

Alright… It’s Rolo! Now I’m just waiting for the list of position coaches…

  44. z November 27, 2015 6:35 pm

Alright!!! Rolo!!! I was thinking maybe a Sunday announcement but this is good.

  45. Balko November 27, 2015 6:50 pm

I’d love to have a “bitterness gauge” on Rich Miano this holiday season. That selection just set his potential university head coaching career back by four to five more years.

  46. cappie the dog November 27, 2015 6:51 pm

The early announcement, in my book, makes Matlin the best athletic director this school has had since the late Stan Sheriff.

    Okay.

    Start recruiting.

  47. ML Warrior November 27, 2015 6:57 pm

Enough of the whining about jj, we do not know all the details of going on behind the scenes. Except the fact that the new head coach is Rolovich, trust him, or take and wash your shirts and jersey’s, fold them and put them in your dresser, and wait for the next head coaoch, and no whining on the blogs about jj.

By the way I told you so.

  48. Sangamon Keith November 27, 2015 6:59 pm

One overlooked factor is Rolovich’s knowledge of both the pass oriented run ‘n shoot and the run oriented pistol offense. He’s been immersed in both serving two four-year stints as offensive coordinator in each while being at the UH and then at Nevada. Don’t be surprised if we see the pistol next year instead of the run ‘n shoot. The current UH talent might be better suited for that.

The other point is that Nick has studied Hawaii as a league opponent and undoubtedly has a strong sense of our strengths and weaknesses. Because he has been part of preparing for the UH games over the last four years, he probably has a better sense than any other candidate what needs to be address and what are our best opportunities for improvement.

Now those are advantages as he starts … he now needs to execute as the coaches would say. I think he can.

    Keith

  49. kakaako kid November 27, 2015 7:03 pm

10 the hard way! Like Veneri sings, “I’m loving it.” So close to giving up my season tickets, “Put me in coach, I’m ready to play.”

  50. Bryson November 27, 2015 7:03 pm

I can see TC being the OC/QB coach,Jeff Ulrich being a DC, Abe Staying Put,Stutz or Lelie as WR Co…I predict Rolo will fill his staff with young go getter types when it comes to recruiting…

  51. Bryson November 27, 2015 7:04 pm

Oh and I forgot to mention Tuioti back on the UH sidelines coaching the D line again…

  52. S.pezzy55 November 27, 2015 7:06 pm

Wanted JJ but still happy wit ROLO. GO BOWS!!!

  53. S.peezy55 November 27, 2015 7:08 pm

    Congrats to coach ROLO…GO BOWS!!!

  54. hitmanhart November 27, 2015 7:08 pm

32 so true cant see this choice putting people in the seat !!

  55. TChahng November 27, 2015 7:09 pm

    Congratulations Coach Rolovich! Welcome home.

  56. A-House November 27, 2015 7:13 pm

    wot ah saprize for us!!

die is cast and now time to start running – support Coach Rolo!!!

expect to see a young, but experienced assistant coaches; unlike Chow’s grad assistants who have very limited time as a player or coach.

things are really looking up for UH football.

now eye no why good neighbor was up one recent morning at 3 am on the phone!

  57. Bryson November 27, 2015 7:13 pm

I wonder if JJ stepped aside for Rolo to become HC,also does Rolo begin effective immediately since the dead period of recruiting ends on Monday or will he coach out his final games as Nevada OC?

  58. SteveM November 27, 2015 7:17 pm

    Congrats to Rolo!
While I admit JJ would have had me digging deeper in my pocket for better season seats next year, I think Rolo is a good choice.

  59. A-House November 27, 2015 7:17 pm

eye prefer Stutz over Leile as WR coach because as a player, IMHO, Leile was “lazy” by not running his route when he knew ball was not coming his way[ taking 2 or 3 steps and stop ] or giving up on route when balls came his way

yes, he caught many passes for many yards, but his work ethic was not always there.

  60. z November 27, 2015 7:17 pm

Coach George Rush said in 5 years Rolo would be a head coach somewhere. This was in 2012.

  61. justsomeguy November 27, 2015 7:18 pm

Thank heavens it’s not JJ. *whew*

That being said, Rolo has an INCREDIBLE amount of work ahead of him, in admin, scheduling, assistants, and MOST of all, recruiting. I wish him all the luck in the world. I want so desperately for Hawaii football to be good again.

  62. Buffoman November 27, 2015 7:20 pm

I would to see him offer Coach Tata the opportunity to lead the defense. He needs a strong Hawaii presence on his staff and who better than the person who just took his team to the State championships and won. Plus, I believe it was mentioned that coach has been on the UCLA and Stanford staffs.

  63. Dano November 27, 2015 7:21 pm

From the Reno Gazette, Nevada newspaper, Rolo talking about Chow: “Rolovich said he spoke with Chow about staying at Hawaii but wasn’t offered a job.

“He said it’s probably best for your future to get off the island and learn a new system and get in a new environment,” Rolovich told the RGJ in 2012. “And he was right. Right now he’s sounding like a pretty good prophet. Coming here has widened my football knowledge immensely. It’s almost two polar opposites. It reinvigorated me. I feel refreshed.”

  64. dodger4life November 27, 2015 7:24 pm

I jus don’t understand this hire. What has Rolo done to warrant this hire? Gaudy stats as UH’s QB? Has Reno been prolific offensively? I jus can not c a recruit saying he wants to go to UH to play for a Nick Rolovich. I love the Warriors n need to get behind this hire but right now a tad frustrated.

  65. z November 27, 2015 7:26 pm

Tata’s defense made the field look small. They made Waianae look small. I thought it was one of the best defenses that I have seen at that level. If we could get some of those players.

  66. ML Warrior November 27, 2015 7:32 pm

I hope Coach Naeole stays, I like how he has handled himself in a very tough situation, its was not about W/L’s, its about how he has kepted the players focused on football and to finished the season. The o-line players wanted him back, they have his respect.

  67. el burro sabio November 27, 2015 7:37 pm

Rolovich was not even in my top 3. Still, I’m glad that Matlin made a quick decision and I’ll support new Coach Rolovich.

  68. al November 27, 2015 7:38 pm

Bryson I think you are close with some of your suggestions.
Ulbrich makes too much these days. As Kifi said Klemm and Ulbrich make a lot these days. Might even be more than he.

  69. z November 27, 2015 7:44 pm

    63. Our oline was young but got better. Next season they will be better yet.

  70. Kifi November 27, 2015 7:46 pm

Here is a list of football coaches and their ages when they were hired, with no Head coaching experience. Rolo kind of fits the same mold.

    Head Coaches:

    Nick Rolovich/Hawaii (37)
    Urban Meyer/Bowling Green (37)
    Tom Herman/Houston (40)
    PJ Fleck/ Western Michigan (32)
    Justin Fuentes/ Memphis (36)
    Sonny Dykes/LaTech (41)
    Bryan Harsin/Arkansas St.(37)
    Todd Graham/Rice (41)
    Bob Stoops/Oklahoma (39)
    Mike Gundy/Oklahoma St. (38)
    Rich Rodriguez/W. Virginia (38)
    Kirk Ferentz/Maine (35)
    Kliff Kingsbury/Texas Tech (34)
    Gary Patterson/TCU (40)
    Bronco Mendenhall/BYU (39)
    David Shaw/Stanford (39)
    Mark Helfrich/Oregon (40)
    Hugh Freeze/Ole Miss (42)
    Mike Leach/Texas Tech (39)

Doesn’t guarantee success. But I can see Matlin thinking long term and not band-aid.

  71. 808 November 27, 2015 7:47 pm

63, I hope Naeole returns also. I think it would create continuity with the O-line. I am not sure if anyone else will be retained. Also, I hope there are no more grad assistants as the WR’s coach or any other position for that matter.

Congratulations to Nick Rolovich! Not what I expected. But, congrats!

I am looking forward to seeing his new offense. Maybe it will be a mix of the pistol offense and a variation of the run and shoot.

  72. RainboWarrior November 27, 2015 7:47 pm

Noooooo! I cant believe how bad our program has become that we are hiring a head coach that no one else in the entire country would hire(fbs schools). I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see this going well. I was so excited for June Jones coming back, oh well.

  73. z November 27, 2015 7:56 pm

I thought it was interesting how Naole said he was getting things ready for the next coach. I was wondering then if he already knew who it would be. Would kind of explain what he has been doing as interim.

  74. z November 27, 2015 7:57 pm

    69. UNLV hired a highschool coach instead of JJ.

  75. BigWave96744 November 27, 2015 7:59 pm

Looking forward to seeing Rolo at the Nakoa Luau on Sunday

  76. ai-eee-soos November 27, 2015 8:01 pm

link to Reno Gazette article, mentioned above …

    http://www.rgj.com/story/sports/college/nevada/2015/11/27/hawaii-hires-packs-nick-rolovich-head-coach/76481570/

  77. Derek November 27, 2015 8:05 pm

Matlin going young, just like Ganot. At least Rolo is not going to say “I’m too old for this.!!!!!” The jury is out as to where he or his selected assistants can do the job in recruiting, evaluations, and development. We have to hope that he is successful.
We got no choice now so let’s get behind him and fill the stands or order PPV right now. Maybe I’ll take in a road trip next year.

  78. David J. November 27, 2015 8:05 pm

Hello!. I thought yesterday was Thanksgiving!. But when, I got up and heard about the hiring of University of Hawaii new Head Coach! I was happy to hear that! But found out who it was! I thought it was April first!. Boy! Time has passed by fast!. I really seriously it was a danm joke!. It was the bad decision for University of Hawaii!. But anyway let’s give him chance to show something!. If not the University of Hawaii should fired not only the head coach!. They should also fired the athletic director too!. I wonder if he will keep any of the coaching staff?. But anyway this is not 2016 yet and also a joke or a nightmare for the University of Hawaii football program again!

  79. islandman November 27, 2015 8:08 pm

There is a frosh QB Kafentzis on the Nevada team who did not play this year. Don’t know if he is a good player.

  80. Dano November 27, 2015 8:10 pm

Ikaika Woosely was originally recruited by Rolo as a grayshirt. Now is Ikaika’s chance to finally thrive in the run and shoot that he was supposed to be in the first place.

  81. Buffoman November 27, 2015 8:11 pm

If Rolo retains Coach Naeole, and brings on Coach Tata, that would be a strong local base with a strong Polynesian influence.

I think a good receivers coach should be one who can teach good route running, separation techniques, blocking and of course concentration on catching the ball.

  82. Bleachercoach November 27, 2015 8:12 pm

Wow! Great guy and O.C. but wasn’t on my radar for H.C. yet. We looked at O.C Chow who tutored so many Heisman Trophy Q.B.s and was successful at BYU, USC, North Carolina, etc…Even with his very extensive resume he wasn’t able to be a successful H.C here. I think the fans will come to watch a new beginnings but if Rolo doesn’t produce, the fans will not be as sympathetic as if it would be Jones or Miano. In my honest opinion the only LOYAL COACH is Rich Miano!! Do your homework!!

  83. HALAWA 4 LIFE November 27, 2015 8:18 pm

June Jones is the only coach that would bring success back to the Warriors; high scoring offense that will draw fans back to an EMPTY Aloha stadium, NFL connections that recruits love and big time sponsors that June has brought before. Proof is in the pudding; he took a team with no HS All Americans to a BCS bowl. Get ready for 3 years of 4 to 6 win seasons!!

  84. clyde November 27, 2015 8:21 pm

islandman: I think Austin Kafentzis was once named the national player of the year in high school. I was thinking the same thing … time to bring back the Kafentzis bloodline … except he’s already redshirted this season.

  85. S.peezy55 November 27, 2015 8:26 pm

I was at the game when Rolo torched BYU. I hope that’s the kind of offense Rolo brings to Hawaii.

  86. RainboWarrior November 27, 2015 8:30 pm

Yeah, UNLV hired a high school coach and look how that’s turning out for them but that was local politics. It would have been like if we hired Cal Lee as head coach 20 years ago when Saint Louis was always stacked and winning.

  87. Teethkanaka November 27, 2015 8:39 pm

I think Rolo is a great choice. Knew he was handcuffed by appliances in Nevada. But learned the Run and Shoot under JJ and Ron Lee, did pretty good as OCunder Coach Mac, learned the Pistol O under Chris Alt.

Is he ready? I dunno. Is he young? Yes. But remember at age 37, he is only two younger than Dick Tomey who the UH job at age 39, and 4 years younger than Wags who was 41 when he got the UH job.

Thank god it wasn’t Rich Miano, I woulda given up my 39 years old season tickets if it were him. I was a pre- teen then. I woulda choose JJ but NR was my second choice. Remember in 1977 Ray Nagel’s fifth choice was Dick Tomey. Nuff said.

    Good choice Dave Matlin!!!!

  88. islandman November 27, 2015 8:40 pm

    81. … So far this year, Nevada has passed on only 37.8 % of its plays; 167 passing yds/ game, 15 TD’s , 5 INT’s . 221 yds/ game rushing, 20 TD’s.

  89. HALAWA 4 LIFE November 27, 2015 8:41 pm

Kahuku games had more fans then UH this year and now this.. What happened the last time we hired a genius offensive coordinator with no HC experience???
    Division 2 here we come!!!

  90. Teethkanaka November 27, 2015 8:41 pm

Sorry the appliances was Polian thank you spell check.

  91. HALAWA 4 LIFE November 27, 2015 8:47 pm

    S.peezy55,
exactly my point, it was June Jones offense crushed BYU!!!!

  92. S.peezy55 November 27, 2015 8:51 pm

I’m pretty sure the offense will be more passing then running.

  93. S.peezy55 November 27, 2015 8:53 pm

Pretty sure their gonna pass more than 37.8% of the time.

  94. Bugaz November 27, 2015 9:06 pm

Congrats coach Rolo!!! Was hoping for JJ, but we’ll see how it all shakes out.best of luck to our new head coach!

  95. z November 27, 2015 9:07 pm

Pistol is run first offense. But listening to a video of Rolo when Polian came in Rolo seemed like the kind of OC who listened to the ideas of the other coaches.

  96. HALAWA 4 LIFE November 27, 2015 9:12 pm

This is like USC hiring Norm Chow over Pete Carroll. Lol.. (OC over Head Coach)

  97. cavewarrior November 27, 2015 9:14 pm

RB Paul Harris needs 34 yds to hit a 1000 yds season. Go get’um Paul! I’ll be in the stands watching this accomplishment :).

    GO Warriors!

    From RGJ:

…Rolovich was hired by Wolf Pack coach Chris Ault prior to the 2012 season and was one of three assistants retained by Polian when he took over the program in 2013. Safeties coach Mike Bradeson is the only remaining holdover from Ault’s final tenure. When Rolovich was hired by Nevada in 2012, he said it was for the better that he left Hawaii to diversified his skill set. Rolovich said he spoke with Chow about staying at Hawaii but wasn’t offered a job.

Rolovich has been a highly sough-after coach. The 36-year-old accepted the offensive coordinator position at Massachusetts prior to the 2012 season before being offered a job at Nevada. When Ault resigned, Rolovich accepted the offensive coordinator position at Temple before Polian talked him into staying at Nevada.

George Rush, the legendary head coach of San Francisco City College, where Rolovich began his college playing career and served as an assistant from 2006-07, told the RGJ in 2012 that Rolovich was going to be a college head coach. And sooner rather than later.

“I’d be shocked if he wasn’t the head coach at a major school in the next five years,” Rush told the RGJ in April 2012. “I’d be shocked. I mean he’s talented. He’s as bright a young coach who is out there.”

Rolovich helped Nevada build a recruiting pipeline back to Hawaii and into Utah, which has a strong Polynesian base, and his outgoing personality endeared him to Wolf Pack players.

“Extremely happy for Nick Rolovich,” Wolf Pack quarterback Cody Fajardo tweeted Friday night. “Hands down my favorite coach of all time. I’m looking forward to seeing his success as a head coach.”

    Ok. Congrats to Rolo…

Now comes the critical part: can he assemble a staff that can recruit effectively?

Now comes the question/concern I’ve had with the whole process that nobody talks about: How much money will be available to pay for quality assistants?

because Rolo is going to be cheaper than Chow, will this allow UH to offer on the higher end of the salary range to try and attract good assistants?

    That’s the key question.

Remember, recruiting isn’t just the HC. He cannot recruit all players, there’s just too many to find, evaluate, talk to, visit, etc for one guy to handle.

Another point that nobody has brought up that I hope AD Matlin will do… Realign the FB budget to boost recruiting budget. UH has fallen far behind their rivals largely in part to the advent of social media (this has made it much harder to keep good local players here) and the lack of budget to visit recruits in person. Emails and phone calls are great, but nothing beats a coach coming to your living room and showing all the highlights of The school.

  100. kulawarrior November 27, 2015 9:42 pm

    Excited about this hire.
His current / recent experience against MWC teams is a bonus, too.

  101. buffal78 November 27, 2015 9:47 pm

So wrong here unproven and what kind of staff can a 36 year old unproven head coach put together which includes recruiting coordinators in southern California and pacific northwest and pacific and Australia ?, good luck Rolo best wishes so a few points Mr Matlin and team
    1. What Kind of offense will he run?
    2. What kind of defense will he run and what kind of D coordinator work under him being so young?
    3. What kind recruiting coordinators could work under him and all contacts.
    4. Butts in the seats, new & renewals, you can scratch that right now, include myself.
I am glad it is Rolo a UH ex June quarterback coming back I lack faith in the UH administrators with the Gib mess and many many other things this is the icing on the cake I am now a ex season ticket holder and will not attend tomorrows finally
wish seniors best of luck Chris Naole too, with Michigan on tap next year along with Arizona both on the road it will be a long season I will now just select a few
games at least to watch Kennedy T knock a few guys out in the backfield so at last
words is MR. (cleat up da Mess) Matlin How you get this so wrong, guy so now it is your guy (your advisor team) you better hope Rolo can assemble a super staff because that’s what its Going to take don’t be so Damm cheap pay these guys and here’s hoping Kaulakaua stays .

  102. Former UH Athlete November 27, 2015 9:50 pm

    90.

Harris is a gamer. If you can get 1,000yds in spite of a horrendous passing game and below average OLine play and with a defense that’s lost its fire (except for KT & Gener), you’re a baller.

  103. Chopsueyboy November 27, 2015 9:51 pm

    Congrats Rolo!

  104. cocobean November 27, 2015 9:57 pm

#67. Thanks for looking up the ages of some successful head coaches. I stated before I believe HCs are born rather than made. Said I bet a lot of successful HCs college or pros got their 1st HC gig while in their thirties or early forties. I believe Bear Byrant, Woodie Hays, Paterno, ,jimmy Johnson, Booby Bowden all were HCs before 40.

Also said my gut tells me Matlin is probably looking for a young up and comer. Rolo fits that profile but I never imagined it would be him. He must have grown a lot since leaving here. His public speaking was in my opinion a notch below Bob Wagner who wasn’t what you’d call inspirational.

  105. cocobean November 27, 2015 9:59 pm

Forgot to say congrats Rolo. You’ll my full support.

  106. cocobean November 27, 2015 10:01 pm

BTW. Congrats to Matlin. Are we the first D! school to name a new HC for 2016.

  107. 3-Prong November 27, 2015 10:12 pm

Miano needs to be on Rolo’s staff for the local ties. What the heck, take a shot, see if JJ will be an OC (ala Glanville back in the day).

  108. NorthShoreFan November 27, 2015 10:37 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…bootiful evening.

for all the disappointed JJ peeps…..It’s time to Rolo on!

    Got Rolo?

  109. Moocher November 27, 2015 10:44 pm

    I was hoping for JJ…
But that was because I was remembering and hoping again for what was. Although now, I find myself hoping for what will be! Rolo is like that finance factors commercial for makakilo…the one with the six million dollar man’s boss where he says “The future is at makakilo.”

Only now it’s The future is…with Nick Rolovich.

  110. Former UH Athlete November 27, 2015 10:46 pm

    98. I second that… Congrats to Matlin for making a decision quickly.

Although I am a bit surprised how quickly it went from releasing the 5 finalists and the announcement.

Sounds like it was only one round of interviews?

  111. Moocher November 27, 2015 10:52 pm

    We need a koa spear….
A warrior spear that is passed on from coach to coach. And at the game the coach brings out the spear, spikes it into “the ground” and the team does the haka. Or the coach gives it to a captain and when they go out for the coin toss one of the captains brings the spear to midfield and spikes it in to “the ground when the teams meet at the fitty. Maybe need a pot with dirt to spike it into…

Or to bring in some cash…a donor or corporate donor can be selected to spike the warrior spear into the ground at the coin toss…then let that corporate donor keep the replica with game spear with their name and the score embossed in it.

I don’t know…maybe the excitement of roll woke up m mind that was going senile the past fort years.

  112. Moocher November 27, 2015 10:57 pm

First order of buiness for rolo…. remove rainbows and go back to being the warriors….unless the spear i mentioned earlier has rainbow coloured tassels on it 😛

  113. kaleiguy November 27, 2015 10:58 pm

Bad choice…..now lets see if the Wahine will be sent to E. Coast???

  114. cappie the dog November 27, 2015 11:56 pm

    107.

    Mouse Davis worked for Jones.

That’s because Davis was really old.

    Is 62 old enough?

  115. 808 November 27, 2015 11:57 pm

46, you may want to hold off on Matlin being the best AD since Stan Sheriff.

However, it was a quick decision on choosing a HC. That is a plus.

  116. Rodney November 28, 2015 1:00 am

    Bad choice Hope Im wrong!

  117. H-Man November 28, 2015 2:06 am

Yeah, me too, I want to see Paul Harris pass the 1,000 yard mark. Got my ticket for today’s game.

  118. Sangamon Keith November 28, 2015 4:00 am

Naysayers on Rolovich hire are just wrong. I’m not claiming an immediate turnaround, but we are now going to get exciting offensive football again.

Please look up stats … Rolo’s offensives at UH and Nevada significantly outperformed June’s at SMU. What makes that even more interesting is that he did it with two completely different offensive philosophies!

Just my opinion but some of you are jumping off the boat way too quickly. This is a very good selection.

    Keith

  119. HALAWA 4 LIFE November 28, 2015 5:56 am

To all you season ticket holders who are happy with this hire; enjoy your tailgate parties cause UH will win no more then 4 to 6 games every year..
.I agree, get rid of the Rainbow uniforms for GOOD!

  120. Maddog50 November 28, 2015 6:02 am

NR has been exposed to some good football minds and some with organizational skills. JJ Chris Ault….Mac….Polian and some awfully good asst coaches. Although I am not a Polian fan….he has learned a lot from his father and also his time at ND. I want to stay away from fan favorites for asst. just because you played and people loved you you have to recruit and have teaching and game skills as good as the guys in our conference. You win with talent-first being able to identify and next is development. Learned in my business experience with a fortune 50 company repeatedly-Hope is not a plan! Let’s move the needle and game on! For some kids that may have been looking at jumping ship I think this hire with its timing might settle things down a bit. Won’t be upset if anybody leaves if they don’t see the light let them go elsewhere. Only want the guys that want to be here that can produce-passion and effort are factors that make winners-for a good laugh Google Cat in the House featuring former Coastal Carolina Coach-We needs more dogs!!!!!

  121. bernie motta November 28, 2015 6:11 am

Good luck to the new coach. He has a hugh job ahead of him. If he can’t turn this program around, football at UH should be dropped. Nobody goes to the games any more. Home ground talent leaves and goes to other Universities on the main land. It’s not good for a University to loose almost every football game. It’s not fair for the tax payers to pay for a loosing program.

  122. Shoko November 28, 2015 6:16 am

Congrats to Rolo and good luck next season. It’s gonna be sweet!

“It’s early on the West Coast, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t breaking news. I have confirmed that California will start the 2016 season on the road — really on the road — against Hawaii at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia, a site originally constructed for the 2000 Olympic Games.”

  123. PeteJek November 28, 2015 6:33 am

The decision needed to be expedited and decisive. I give the AD credit for that. Rolovich’s offense with Bryant Moniz was probably my favorite. He added the zone-read to the run-and-shoot, which I think would’ve helped UH big time in the Sugar Bowl. His teams put up similar numbers to the Brennan years with inferior receivers — Salas and Pilares aside. I’m excited to see how Rolovich has grown even more with a couple of years leading Chris Ault’s pistol.

All of that said, I have no idea about his management skills and ability to recruit both coaches and players. Does he have the ability to command respect from coaches who are likely to be his senior, and from recruits who may not be impressed with his body of work, or lack thereof.

I wish Nick Rolovich the best of luck. And UH, too.

  124. H-Man November 28, 2015 6:46 am

And I wish to add that I am just relieved the Chow era has come to an end. It has been so painful to have witnessed the total dismantling of a once very proud program with a strong fan base.

  125. mileHIwarrior November 28, 2015 6:49 am

#119 Thanks! Just like every game we go to win or lose, good or bad, we will always enjoy it! Keep them bandwagon fires burning yah?

  126. H-Man November 28, 2015 6:49 am

Shoko, thanks for the breaking news. This is exciting and should help in recruiting.

  127. Old School Dave November 28, 2015 7:07 am

Thanks Shoko. Wow! Traveling to Australia, then Ann Arbor the next week? Talk about some serious miles and travel time for the team.

  128. Old School Dave November 28, 2015 7:09 am

Sidenote: Saw the video clips of Rolovich at practice. Reno seems to have a nice practice field/facility. Read that there are plans to upgrade and expand their stadium, too. Interesting series of articles on the state of their athletic program and comparing the Wolfpack to Boise State.

  129. kev-1 November 28, 2015 7:11 am

It ought to be interesting to hear if Miano comments on it during today’s broadcast. He seems like a pretty stand up guy, so I’m sure he’ll be positive.

  130. kev-1 November 28, 2015 7:13 am

I was convinced it was going to be JJ. But I wanted Rolo when they hired Chow, so I’m all in.

    Let’s Rolo!!!

  131. kev-1 November 28, 2015 7:15 am

ST, did you go to the store and buy that pack of Rolo for this occasion and eat half before you got the chance to take a pic?

Or are those really a pic of the oh so controversial post game Rolos?

    I love that story.

    Welcome back Coach Rolo.

  132. Ipu Man November 28, 2015 7:22 am

I like Moocher’s ideas for a spear thrust into the ground…
Also, maybe UH can get some extra money from the Tootsie Roll
company if we get a “Rolo” mascot. 🙂

  133. papajoe2 November 28, 2015 7:51 am

Moocher~Spiking the spear into the turf will ruin the turf and cost big bucks to fix.

  134. leron November 28, 2015 7:55 am

    First month of 2016 season:

    vs. Cal in Sydney
    vs. Michigan in Ann Arbor
    vs.Tennessee-Martin at home
    vs. Arizona in Tucson

  135. justsomeguy November 28, 2015 7:58 am

To all those crying because JJ didn’t get the job. Suck it up.

To all those professing NR will only get 4-6 wins a year for the next for years…….
I don’t know what games YOU have been watching, but that would be a lot better than we have been doing….PLUS that’s “to be expected” with a new coach, we LITERALLY all know this. You’re not saying anything intelligent.

Every candidate has their strengths and weaknesses. You have to make the best of what you have. Nick is young and will be able to connect with recruits in a very different way than Chow, lets hope he uses that to his advantage. He has a fantastic offensive pedigree, and despite my lack of enthusiasm for JJ as a head coach, the man knows football and I’m sure Nick learned a great deal from him.

My only request now is that we SPEND THE MONEY on the best defensive coordinator we can find. There are usually VERY HUNGRY young coaches out there ready and willing to take on a new challenge at a D1 school, filling those spots won’t be easy, but won’t be tremendously hard either. The defensive coordinator is truly where UH needs to “put it’s money where it’s mouth is”. If they want to be competitive SPEND THE DANG MONEY.

A winning program will likely triple the revenue of the program this year, that in itself justifies the increase in budget, in fact I would argue that it’s counter intuitive as well as just bad economics to try to run a program on a bare minimum budget. Now, I’m aware UHM isn’t the wealthiest school, I’m not looking for Alabama results here, just better than what we’ve had.

    Sorry for the novel.
