UH wasn't Destin's destiny

Destin Stewart, a wideout from Douglass High in Tulsa, met the NCAA requirements to play for the Warriors this season.
But UH and Tulsa have different standards, and he did not gain admittance to Manoa.
The Warriors were forced to release Stewart from the letter of intent he signed in February.
Stewart is now enrolled at Tulsa, and will play for the Golden Hurricane this season.

In an e-mail to UH alumni, Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw had this to say about the athletic department:

We definitely feel beat-up by the economic downturn, certainly increasing the challenges for our Athletic Department to generate 85% of its own funding — a high expectation for any athletics program but especially for one with our travel costs and no revenue-generating stadium.
Yet we are upbeat about celebrating the 100th anniversary of UH athletics this year – a century of exciting sports teams that have generated wonderful experiences and connections with our community, along with strong public-private partnerships like the new Ching field and upcoming athletic complex, and, most importantly, impressive alumni like our new Miss Hawai‘i, former Rainbow Wahine Raeceen Woolford. We certainly welcome your participation in our exciting centennial and homecoming events this coming year.

basically, the ugly truth of it is mack and tuioti didnt do their job. stewart thought he met requirements and mack/tuioti didnt recognize that UH has different requirements. plain and simple, they SCREWED UP and the bad thing is that Destin Stewart still wants to be a Warrior but could not sit around for 4 another 4 months so he took the Tulsa offer.

    get your ish together Tuioti!

Good morning Tsaikos. Looking back is easy, anyone can do it, but going forward into the future is a challenge. We’ve lost many players due to grades, etc in the past, but we have a team now that is ready to challenge the future and all emphasis should be on that goal of winning the WAC Championship outright. Staying in the reverse mode is not where it is, it is time to step up and cheer for the team as they get ready for Central Arkansas.

  15. koakane™ August 5, 2009 7:23 am

  21. FloridaTed August 5, 2009 7:58 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Looking at the roster, it seems to be pretty stacked with talent.

I have high hopes that our defense won’t have the same growing pains as our offense had in 09. We have a bunch of semi starters returning there, plus tons of talent, which is easier to mold, cohesively, than offense. With McMackin there, the defense will be alright.

The offense has definately upgraded itself in the talent department, at least on paper. I have high hopes of returning to the glory days of the R&S scoring fiests.

All in all, I’ll stick to my prediction of ten or more wins, providing the full team will show up every week. There are never any pushovers in Football. Central Arkansas still makes me slighly nervous.

    Let’s go, I’m ready.

  22. Garret August 5, 2009 7:59 am

Interesting and sad that Destin would find out at such a late date that he wasn’t admitted to UH. Luckily for him he was talented enough to get a scholarship from Tulsa–many schools are out of 2009 scholarship spots.

  23. Garret August 5, 2009 8:00 am

Thin and light shoes would be great for WRs, DBs, and everyone who relies on speed. Hopefully the lineman won’t have any problems with the UA shoes this year and we won’t hear complaints about that again.

  24. Garret August 5, 2009 8:01 am

The GM of the Bears praised Pisa’s performance in their camp.

LM: Which players have impressed you most during the first five or so days of camp?

JA: On defense, Zack Bowman continues to find the ball. Our linebackers have looked real good. Pisa [Tinoisamoa] keeps impressing. Jamar [Williams] and Nick [Roach] also.

  25. Garret August 5, 2009 8:03 am

Colt update–it sounds like he wants to stay with Washington.

Colt Brennan to Chick Hernandez: “Over the [past] year I started to feel like I was old, you know; I had these little aches and pains all the time. And now that’s all kind of faded away, now I’m starting to feel young and fruitful again.”

    * The Redskins used to run a play called Corner Omaha. They’ve since shorted it to Colt, in honor of the C-O beginning. Not in honor of Colt Brennan?

“Z got in a meeting and said that it wasn’t [because of Brennan], he just used to do that in his previous life,” Cooley said. “Colt was very excited, though.”

    * Speaking of excited, here’s more Colt to Chick, on playing in D.C.: “I don’t want to leave, man, this place is awesome,” he said. “I love it here, and I want to be here as long as a I can, hopefully for my whole career. I just really appreciate the fans being open, and being so fun and cool about everything, and taking a third -string quarterback and giving him some notoriety.”

  26. Garret August 5, 2009 8:04 am

Frank DeFord went off about ESPN.

Sports Illustrated’s Frank DeFord used his NPR pulpit today to rail against ESPN.

For example, it signed a 15-year contract with the Southeastern Conference for more than $2 billion, thereby sending every other conference into a panic mode, fearful that ESPN will make the SEC pre-eminent — America’s conference. It can do that. In no other significant part of American culture does one media entity enjoy such domination.

The NY Post is banning their sports writers from doing any radio or TV.

According to multiple sources, after ESPN lifted its ban of New York Post staffers Friday, the paper’s editor, Col Allan, came up with a plan of his own: No more outside freelancing, and that includes radio and television. We’re uncertain as to whether or not this applies to the entire paper or just the sports section – everyone we reached out to is deathly terrified to speak on the record; even moreso than the ESPN staffers we talked to regarding the ’social networking rules‘ – but the impact in sports will definitely be felt.

  29. (Jesse)James August 5, 2009 8:14 am

Good morning gang….hope everyone has a good day today…

Too bad about Destin…something sounds screwy about the admissions process…and why would he have found out that he wasn’t admitted just a few days before classes begin?? Something is not right, somebody screwed up somewhere…

Hope to see you all at the CC today….

  30. Garret August 5, 2009 8:20 am

Another player rejected by the UH admissions department:

Michael Martin of Saint Louis School was suppose to walk on too, but the school never accepted him. I don’t get that you have the coaches fighting for a player to be able to come and walk on and the university doesn’t appeal the decision when they have for other individuals.

    somethings wrong with that picture…

  31. haka August 5, 2009 8:26 am

    Let’s Go Warriors!

Yesterday, I was listening to the father of a United States nuclear submarine commander tell a story of the unbelieveable training that Navy SEAL’s must go through to not only be a SEAL, but what they go through to get ready for a specific mission. Grueling preparation, timing, teamwork and testing, over and over and over again. No margin for error. There can be no mistakes. None. Period. The mission depends on it. Lives depend on it. Perfection or dire consequences. They are warriors in the truest sense.

As sports fans and athletes we speak of “going to war”, “going to battle”, “being in the trenches” and so on, but most of the time we say these things without reality in mind. Sports is an escape for most fans. A vicarious experience of what we can only dream to be. Our team is a proud representation of our families, our community, our culture and our history. We are Warrior fans.

With fall camp upon us and a new season at hand, the athletes must prepare for the competition they enlisted for. Although they do not have the balance of life or death weighing on their mission, they do have the weight of representation that defines their success. If they aspire to be all that they can be, they must prepare with the dedication and teamwork of the truest warriors. Over and over again. Focus. There can be no mistakes. None. Period. The mission depends on it. The life of success must consume them as warriors.

Let’s go Warriors! Let’s go Warriors! Let’s go Warriors! ………

  32. Slugger August 5, 2009 8:29 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka kakou!!!

Are the team’s shoes wide enough for those with lu’au feet? Not having the right support for lateral movement can cause problems with stability.

  35. letsgowarriors August 5, 2009 9:03 am

    sorry, i meant redshirting*

  36. FloridaTed August 5, 2009 9:09 am

    Haka (32),

Very true, very true, even though, in Football there is “only” a Championship at stake, that Championship is an indicator of your dedication to the mission. On top of that, whole communities live precariously through their teams, their well being rising and falling with the teams fortunes, knowing full well that they themselves could never achieve what they are cheering for.

That is why I have no problem criticizing multi millionaire pro-athletes, but hesitate to do the same to college kids.

tomboahi: RT @redskinsblog: Colt TD was in 9-on-9 drills. Earned him a high five from Zorn afterward, too.

RT means Re-Tweet, meaning you are repeating the tweet of another tweeter, in this case, redskinsblog

It’s real sad to learn about Stewart. I think he was going to be a big time receiver. Something is wrong when a player is eligible to play by the NCAA and the school doesn’t. I know schools have different standards, but give me a break. If the NCAA says he can play then I think UH should make an exception. Let’s not think about all these negative ways. Let’s find a way to make it work and happen. Man, this is a bummer. And what happened to receiver Craig Bell? Looking at the camp roster, it seems the cornerback position is short on numbers and experience. I’m a little confused when UH recruit a player and get a commitment from a guy from Gabe Tuata and yet never get in school. And yet, a guy who was just as good, Kama Bailey, didn’t get a scholarship from UH and ends up at Idaho. What’s the scoop? I thought Bailey was a better player than Tuata all along. Looks to me, UH let a good one away. At the least, Bailey should be returning kicks for UH and also play running back and or slotback.

  109. royal crown August 5, 2009 12:33 pm

I don’t see redshirt fresmen’s Steven Christian’s name on the official training camp roster, either. The 2008 recruit was a heavily recruited DB and had a 3 star rating. Whatever the mystery as to why he’s not on the list I’m curious to find out.

  110. Garret August 5, 2009 12:42 pm

From UH’s press release touting the 2009 recruits. Note the 3 recruits that UH highlighted.

UH won recruiting battles with numerous Bowl Championship Subdivision programs. Silverado High School’s T.J. Alofipo turned down offers from nearly every Pac-10 school in addition to Colorado, BYU, Boise State and Fresno State. Kapolei High’s Chad Lopati spurred offers from Colorado, California, and Oregon State, while Douglass (Okla.) High’s Destin Stewart picked UH over Missouri and Tulsa.

    Garret,

I think UA is slowly improving on their shoes.

I just bought a new pair of the UA Spectres from the Rainbowtique and the complaints of them being “too narrow” could be a thing of the past.

However, running shoes and cleats are two different things.

I agree %100 with you on KB. And, yet, the best UH offered him was preferred walk on status. Here was an All-State offensive player of the year, who (if you remember correctly) ran for over 300 yrds against Punahou. And who also had like three long kickoff returns his senior year. This one here shouldn’t have gotten away, especially since he wanted to come here. On another note one time recruit Benson Maafala was the OG leading the way for KB 2000+ (?) yards. And this may also be indicative of how good of a player BM might have been for UH if he had the admission requirements, too.

  115. A-House August 5, 2009 12:51 pm

    ST:

Unsure when UH Admissions office decided that Destin’s application was denied and informed him, but if it was over the past few days, it only hurts the student and possibly recruiting in Texas.

It is not a good situation when UH recruiters and the Admissions Office staff cannot be better coordinated. Does this fall into the realm of T. Tuioti’s area of responsibility?

Let us hope that this lesson learned will not be repeated ever again!!

What am I saying!! Didn’t UH go through this will Jesse Williams – I mean the verification of meeting certain standards to gain admission?

    COLT WATCH

    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/08/05/afternoon-practice-almost-a-trashcan-challenge/#continued

The post-practice drills were particularly interesting, mainly because they replaced a promising trashcan challenge between Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan, and Chase Daniel. The trashcan was set up in the back corner of the endzone, and the quarterbacks were out around the 10-yard line. Campbell went first, dropped back, and missed. Brennan was next, and he hit on his first try.
Then there was a huddle of some kind, and then next thing anyone watching knew — me and the TV guys who were filming, basically — the quarterbacks were throwing fade routes to the wide receivers in the back of the end zone.

“It was gonna be best out of five,” Campbell told me, “but then the receivers came back out so we just started throwing fades to ’em. We’re gonna regroup and do it again tomorrow after practice.”

“Colt’s claiming that he won just because Coach Meidt and Coach Hixon wanted us to throw to the receivers instead,” Daniel added, “but we’re definitely picking back up tomorrow.”

Brennan looked disappointed at the change in plans. “We started throwing before we could properly set terms, so I wasted a perfectly good trashcan shot,” he said.

The other two high points of Brennan’s day were the long touchdown to Santana Moss in morning practice, and the high five with Coach Jim Zorn that followed.

“It was nice,” he said of the high five. “It’s a progression from where I started. A lot of times even when you complete a pass, you still have to be coached. There’s very few times you get to turn around and get a high five, so it was nice that that happened. It gave me a good feeling on the inside.”

With those things in the past, I asked if anything else exciting had happened today and Brennan shrugged. “I threw a ball into a trashcan. After that, you can pretty much call it a day.”

Mr. A House I believe the word you may be looking for is “sloppy”. This simply cannot be a tag hung on the institution. Aside from the “no soap” scandal, the lickins at the Sugar Bowl, and the recent gaffe by our leader, we’ve had enough. Can’t give the other recruiters any more ammo and we simply cannot help them by shooting ourselves in repeated fashion.

Not good. Not “big time”. Lot of work to get to that next level (and I don’t mean BCS. Next level is like BSU football).

  122. Committed Road Warrior August 5, 2009 1:20 pm

I think of the NCAA rules in the same bucket as federal regulations, that is, they are the bare minimums required of everyone. The universities may choose to follow that minimum, or they can go above and beyond and institute rules that are more stringent than NCAA guidelines for whatever reason they deem pertinent, and it appears UH is one of them.

It’s unfortunate that UH lost a recruit due to admission standards, but I doubt that it’ll be the last time this will happen. In the mean time, I do wish Destin Stewart the best at Tulsa.

BM went to DMHS his junior year (07-08), and then transferred to Mililani HS his senior year. It was the during the 2007 football season and at DMHS, when BM stock began to rise. Brian Derby the HC at DMHS at that time, and an offensive line coach and guru, has been very instrumental of seeing his former players ascending to college football and doing well. BM,IMO, no doubt, will be one of them. As well as KB.

The note on Brian Derby (and I didn’t know this) is not only was he the head coach at DMHS (until he stepped down for the 2009 season) . But he also had time in being a Captain in HFD, running and being the director of his clinics; And he also was involved with Hosei University in Japan in some capacity as a coach.

  127. Garret August 5, 2009 2:02 pm

Stutz1 was officially named the WR coach at Portland State.

“Craig knows my offense as well as I know it,” Glanville said. “He knew what I’m going to do here before he walked in the door, so that will be a plus.

“We talk the same language, the exact same words to describe the offense. He was the one guy among the finalist I can talk to, because when I say ‘Georgia,’ he knows exactly what I’m talking about. He understands what we want to do and he knows how to teach it.”

“It’s a great opportunity,” Stutzman said. “There are so many things that pointed me in this direction. It started off with working in the run and shoot, the connections between the University of Hawaii’s staff and Portland State’s staff … along with the opportunity to get a full-time job and what that means for my family.”

  128. Garret August 5, 2009 2:04 pm

Here is Stutzmann’s bio on Portland State’s website.

“Craig gives us a great sense of comfort,” said Glanville. “We got ‘the guy’ that we don’t have to coach for him to coach here. He can actually coach me on some items. He’s been with June (Jones), he’s played in the system. He has coached at Hawai’i. We could not have had a better guy come in on this short notice. I went from ‘oh my, God’ to ‘it can’t be any better.'”

Following one season in the Canadian Football League (2002), Stutzmann became a teacher and football offensive coordinator at Kalaheo (HI) High
School in 2003. He moved to St. Louis (HI) High School in 2004 where he was the head junior varsity coach for four seasons. St. Louis won Hawai’i junior varsity state championships in 2006 and 2007.

Stutzmann joined the Hawai’i football program as a graduate assistant in January 2008. He coached wide receivers and worked with kickoff and punt
    returners.

I agree. The top programs in the country run their football programs like it’s a science, meaning that their is no ambiguity. And where there is nothing left to doubt or chance, and where their mindsets are ingrained in doing things with a fine tooth comb. How I see it this is the way to run a program.

On looking at UH, where we’re seeing so many glitches in recruits gaining admission something or somebody needs refining. In other words it has to be looked into and addressed.

The football coaches also know ahead of time what’s in the balance as far as a incoming recruits are concerned. They can see the recruit’s high school transcripts with grades and test scores. They know what the UH admission requirements are, yet IMO they gamble on borderline recruits and sign them anyway in hopes that they elevate their grades and test scores in the remainder of the school year in gaining admission to UH. Some don’t. And to me this is obvious.

“So You Think You Can Dance” judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe — a former “Idol” E.P. — is now saying he will ask Paula to join the “SYTYCD” team.

Whether or not “So You Think You Can Dance” can afford Abdul remains to be seen, however. Her surprising departure from “American Idol” is reportedly a result of soured contract negotiations, having been offered a significantly less lucrative deal than her colleagues Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest.

Cowell is said to be making $36 million a year for his “Idol” services, while Seacrest recently signed a three-year contract worth $45 million.

Doris commented on the Destin Stewart thread on SportsHawaii.

Are you aware that only one school in the nation uses the Essay section for admitting students? Harvard? nope. Stanford? Nope, the West Point/Naval/Air Force Academies? Nope MIT??? Nope. UH – yup. Every other school in the country uses the essay section strictly for placement purposes because they say the grading for that section is very subjective, its not a standardized test with multiple choice. So when a local boy I know received at 600+ on his Math a 500+ on his critical reading and a 460 on his essay, he was initially turned down when applying. After appealing he was admitted. Im sad to say that so many kids in Hawaii and around the nation may not have the writing skills to earn a 500 on this section. So why does UH use it to be admitted when no other does? who knows. I dont think it makes UH a better school, I think it does eliminate a lot of deserving local kids from being admitted though.

  165. Garret August 5, 2009 6:01 pm

    Doris,

I’m sorry, I should have made it clear that you weren’t saying that necessarily applied to Destin. What I wrote in my post tried to point that out, but I probably wasn’t clear enough. However, I wanted to pass that along to the people here because they may not be aware that UH has another requirement (most people here are aware of the Algebra 2 requirement) that isn’t a standard one.

This isn’t just a problem for the Athletic Department, as the essay requirement is required for all students applying to UH. Some students might not realize that, some students might be too lazy to try hard on the essay portion, and some students might have cultural reasons for not doing too well on that portion even though they can do well in college.

In extreme cases, some students might be able to be admitted to MIT or Stanford and could *not* be admitted to UH…since I don’t think that the essay score really tells a school much about how a person can do in college, I wish that UH would get rid of this requirement.

I was on admissions committees at the University of Texas at Austin and at Santa Clara University. I actually reviewed applications and decided who would be admitted to graduate programs at both schools, and I advised undergraduate students for *6* years at Texas, so I have some strong feelings about this issue. But since I don’t want to go too far off topic, I’d just like to say that this can cost UH some recruits and it makes no sense to have this requirement!

  166. Garret August 5, 2009 6:04 pm

Some NFL teams are really trying to block reports from practice–the media and fans cannot even tweet, blog, or text during practice!

The Dolphins are at the forefront of an NFL clampdown on Twitter and other social media, with new restrictions imposed on players, reporters and even spectators.

Miami’s secretive Bill Parcells regime prohibits fans and media at training-camp practices from tweeting, blogging or texting. At least six other teams have also imposed such restrictions on reporters, even though the workouts are open to the public.

“It is not practical to prohibit media from doing some reporting (via tweeting, texting, blogging, etc.),” a league memo to teams said.

Along with the Broncos and Dolphins, the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions disagree. They don’t allow reporting from the practice field.

The Broncos also banned cell phones and computers at workouts to prohibit fans from tweeting or texting. The Colts went a step further by prohibiting reporters’ notebooks (the spiral kind) at practice, but the ban was quickly rescinded.

  167. Garret August 5, 2009 6:07 pm

The Colts tried to ban the media from having computers, cells phones, and even paper notebooks during practices! The media eventually got the Colts to let them bring paper to write down notes during practice. Banning a notepad!

I’m glad that Mac is continuing the policy of letting fans watch practice and I hope that things are not abused to the point that fans are banned or that phones and computers have to be banned.

The Broncos also banned cell phones and computers at workouts to prohibit fans from tweeting or texting. The Colts went a step further by prohibiting reporters’ notebooks (the spiral kind) at practice, but the ban was quickly rescinded.

imho, nfl teams can do whatever they please when it comes to practice because they are playing for very, very, very high financial stakes, so why do you want your competitor to know what you are doing or who is practicing. in one sense, uh should do the same when getting ready for some of their games.

Punt returns were a joke last year. And that Bess is returning them for a NFL team suggests the problem has historical roots.

The Warriors will break in a new kicker and punter. That isn’t necessarily a problem because they were 10-for-21 on field goals last season and they averaged less than 40 yards per punt. Cover and return teams traditionally have been a problem for the Warriors. Last year was no exception, with two touchdowns allowed and anemic averages of 2.0 yards per punt return and 20.4 yards per kickoff return. New special teams coach Chris Tormey will try to reverse the trend.

Central Arkansas is about to open camp also. Here is a report on their offseason:

“We’re excited to be opening fall camp,’ said UCA head coach Clint Conque. “With the experience we have coming back and the momentum we have from last season’s success, we’re ready to go.

“Our guys showed a real commitment this summer, with all but one player working out in Conway in our strength and conditioning program. We think that dedication to what we are doing here at UCA will carry over once practice starts.’

  174. Garret August 5, 2009 7:35 pm

    Another article about Central Arkansas.

The reporting logistics shouldn’t be a problem. The Bears are already here. Every returning player but one was in Conway for the entire summer. All were here for the second term of summer school. All freshmen and transfers but one were here for the summer, meaning they all were exposed to the rigorous offseason program directed by strength and conditioning coach Henry Briscoe.

Conque said he and the players are excited about opening the season against Hawaii in Honolulu. Hawaii is paying all the expenses for the UCA team plus about $125,000. He said there is a chance the game (with a midnight central time start) could be picked up on a cable network. UCA-Hawaii and Tulane-Tulsa are the only NCAA Division I games that Friday.

“With games like this, we have a chance to get out there nationally and that’s exciting,” Conque said, noting the trip outside the continental United States will allow the Bears to play a 12th game again this year, the only NCAA FCS team to be able to do that this year.

    NYUH:

Punt returns were not typical last year. Here are some stats:

Punt return average (yards per return):
    2008: 2.0
    2007: 12.4
    2006: 8.0 (Bess averaged 16.6)
    2005: 5.5
2004: 14.0 (Chad Owens was amazing!)

Note that 2008 is much lower than any recent year. 2005 was the next lowest, but there were far less attempts that year–11 punt returns all season, where the average is probably around 29 returns per season.

    Today’s camp comments from Colt:

    COLT BRENNAN
Finally, good day!!! We ran a redzone offense and I made some good plays this morning. In 7 on 7, I hit Santana [Moss] on a go route down the sideline; it felt good, especially in front of a few thousand fans. It’s so funny from a player’s perspective to see the fans react to plays at practice. That’s one aspect about playing in the league that’s so much fun.

Women’s beach volleyball will apparently be an NCAA sport soon.

Beach volleyball is being considered as an addition to the NCAA’s list of emerging sports for women, a program designed to balance the male-to-female participation ratio in college athletics.

Sand volleyball was approved by an NCAA committee in April, but because of numerous objections to the proposal another vote will take place in January.

Although some schools may not want to front the money now, some observers think the sport could quickly become a revenue producer.

“People love watching beach volleyball,” AVP spokesperson Alison Shapiro said. “You can see on the Olympics how all the American beach volleyball matches were shown in such prime spots. NBC and their Olympic broadcast put so much money behind our sport and that will only be reflected at the college level.”

Oakland’s backup nose tackle didn’t do much against Samson today.

With nose tackle Gerard Warren out due to sickness, Terdell Sands got all the first-team snaps.

The results: lots of getting stood up at the line of scrimmage with minimal push against left guard Paul McQuistan or center Samson Satele.

Sands did get penetration twice, where he was in position for a pass deflection once and a sack the other time. In the other 20-25 plays, Sands wasn’t even close to making a play.

Had I known that the CC was going to last until around 4 pm, I would have come on over after I got through with my scan procedure at Kaiser shortly before 1 pm. Would have saved a bundle in car repairs.

Instead, I stopped at Wal-Mart and then went over to Costco in Iwilei shortly after 2 pm.

Came back out after 20 minutes at the Food Court picking up a pizza to find that my car had been broken into. The only things taken were a green plastic flashlight, a pair of DrDoc’s old workout shoes, my sweatshirt, and about 70 cents in change. However, the driver’s side door was damaged in getting to these goodies so once again, it’s off to get the car repaired first thing tomorrow.

Broad daylight in the middle of the parking lot!! I mean, who breaks into a 1988 Toyota Camry wagon?!? When I went trade it in for the Cash For Clunkers program two days ago, I was told it was not eligible because the original gas mileage back in the day was 22 mpg. Don’t I wish today.

Glad you all had a good time. Hope to see some folks at the practices over the next couple of days.

With UH and KFVE working on a channel to broadcast past UH games, that should be a huge step towards being able to sell those games on DVD to UH fans. That could bring a lot of money to UH and KFVE, a revenue stream that UH could really use! Plus, it would be great for UH fans, especially if the additional information (interviews, other information) is included as DVD extras.

Also, UH and KFVE are working on a “classics” channel that will broadcast past UH games. Those broadcasts will include an introduction that provides background information.

When Navy comes to Aloha Stadium late this season they hope to have an improved passing attack.

Navy led the country in rushing with 292.38 yards per game, but all of the players involved, including star fullback Eric Kettani, were lost to graduation. Sophomore Alexander Teich is listed No. 1 on the depth chart going into fall camp, but senior Kevin Campbell and junior Vince Murray also will push for playing time.

The rotation also will help Navy ease into what looks to be a more diverse offense this year. With new quarterback Ricky Dobbs, the Midshipmen have a player who can pass as well as he can run. Of course Navy has no plans to go away from its triple-option style, but the increased passing game is only going to make the Midshipmen that much more difficult to stop.

“The fan-favorite quarterback dodgeball drill made an appearance. Jason Campbell did well — the high point of an otherwise up-and-down practice for him, I think. Todd Collins got hit a few times and, on the whole, looked much less evasive than Campbell. Colt Brennan took the field for the drill to a loud ovation, and proceeded to show off some crazy dodgeball moves. I’m not sure how well it would work in the games, but the assembled fans certainly seemd to enjoy it.”
