The Wright stuff

Congrats to Liana Green-Wright  — wife of former Warrior linebacker Matt Wright — who was crowned Mrs. Hawai‘i.

Thanks to Jon Nielsen for the news: Leonard Peters has qualified for the U.S. national rugby team. He leaves tonight for a tournament in China. He is the only rookie on the U.S. team.

The Warriors will not have any poster players this year.
There won’t be, in fact, any posters.
In a practical move that will save $30,000, the athletic department is doing away with UH team posters.
The Warriors had issued posters, which include a team’s schedule, for more than 30 years. The practice originated at a time before the widespread availability of the Internet.
Now UH’s schedules can be found through various media sources. The Warriors still will distribute schedule cards. The school also is offering free downloadable desktop wallpapers that feature the schedules.
Each poster cost about 60 cents.

* * * * *

In a memo circulated to staff workers yesterday, UH confirmed it will print a full run of media guides for the football and women’s volleyball teams. It has not been decided if media guides will be offered for other sports.
There is a growing trend — led by Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan of the Big Ten — to eliminate production of media guides as a cost-saving measure. Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada will not bring published football media guides to this month’s WAC Media Preview in Salt Lake City.
But it was decided that because of UH’s isolation, media guides are needed as recruiting brochures. Last year, UH spent about $80,000 to print media guides for all of its sports.

It is sad but understandable that UH will not print posters anymore. I’m surprised that UH will print a full run of media guides instead of reducing the amount a little.

Jake Ingram’s agent said that Ingram should have a contract completed in about a week.

Of the Patriots’ 12 draft picks, only Chung, third-rounder Tyrone McKenzie, and sixth-rounder Jake Ingram remain unsigned.

Nothing appears imminent with Chung. McKenzie, a linebacker, is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during rookie minicamp. Wynn Silberman, the agent for Ingram, said he thought the long snapper could have a deal in the next week or so.

Longtime rivals Army and Notre Dame will play the first football game ever held at the new Yankee Stadium when they face off their in 2010. The game will be considered a home game for Notre Dame and will be televised on NBC.

The Irish have high hopes for the 2009 season and are hoping to build off of their 49-21 victory over Hawaii in last year’s Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Game.

In what was maybe the game that put Notre Dame on the college football map they defeated Army in 1913 by a score of 35-13. The game saw the Irish revolutionize the forward pass which changed the way the game was played.

The Warriors are getting ready for year two of head coach Greg McMackin’s takeover of the Hawaii program. McMackin is applying a very interesting strategy this year by only guaranteeing three starting roles and claiming all the other spots are up for grabs. Even if a starter is returning from last season there is no guarantee that he will have that same privilege in the 2009-10 season. The only players who will retain their starting roles are quarterback Greg Alexander, center John Estes and the big defensive end John Fonoti. McMackin’s plan is to create an extremely competitive environment that will encourage players to tap deep into their talent and perform at their best ability.

  59. Long Time UH Fan July 18, 2009 8:37 am

    For what it’s worth…

Bobby Curran Handicaps WAC FB Teams

1–Boise State–Outstanding Offensive Unit led by QB Moore. D looks rock solid. Toughest game will be at Tulsa. Could be headed back in a BCS bowl game.
2–Nevada–QB Kaepernick and RB Tua pace the Offense. D returns 7 starters and should be strong up front.
3–LA Tech–Big, nasty OL allows Bulldogs to pound the football. DLine returns intact but can they stop opponents’ passing.
4–Hawaii Warriors–Offense may surprise some folks;QB Alexander will look like a different player this year. OLine led by Estes will be much better. This year’s receivers will be fastest group. RB Funaki and Wright-Jackson will provide some balance. Big question is the D with only two starters returning. A healthy Blaze Soares will help a ton. Road games at Nevada and San Jose State will be critical.
5–Fresno State–Big question at QB. Look for inside running game becasue tackles are big but slow. Strength will be the D with 8 starters returning.
6–San Jose State–Five starters return on OLine but QB Reed can be rattled. D returns seven starters.
7–Utah State–D returns 7 starters but are undersized and vulnerable to the run. Aggies may just have to outscore their opponents.
8–New Mexico State–Have to find new QB to replace Holbrook. Most of O & D is new but have 5 starters returning on both sides of the ball.
9–Idaho–Problems at QB; RB position is decent. Six starters return on D but talent level is too low to avoid WAC cellar.

  63. Stephen Tsai July 18, 2009 8:50 am

I think the posters were underwritten by a beer company.
But it was part of those corporate-sponsor deals where UH gets money, and some of it is used for posters. Now the money will go to other projects.

  64. mo808 July 18, 2009 8:50 am

WTG Leonard! Wish you much success in rugby!
Auwe about the Leahey show and no UH posters to wall paper my sons rooms!

  65. madeinhawaii July 18, 2009 8:51 am

A 2’x3′ print on poster paper, even at my cost, would run about $20 just for supplies.

  66. Stephen Tsai July 18, 2009 8:53 am

One of the things spared was the football team’s use of hotels the night before home games. There was a growing movement to do away with such things. In the end, it was decided that UH needed it for the late-night and pre-game meetings and video reviews.
I know when we’re on the road, we can see the team having meetings well past midnight.

  70. Stephen Tsai July 18, 2009 8:57 am

    Funny story about the posters:
Two years ago, UH printed posters featuring the four stars of the men’s volleyball team. Well, one of them flunked out after the photo was taken. UH had to photoshop out the ousted player. Thing is, they had posed in a lagoon. You can still see traces of the player’s reflection in the water.

  71. Kekoa July 18, 2009 8:58 am

Bobby Curran needs to do his homework…

Having said that, his view of our defense may cause opponents to be totally underwares for brutal Kanack Attacks by a list of others besides Blaze.

We just won’t say who, we’ll make it our little surprise. Hehehehe…

  72. Stephen Tsai July 18, 2009 8:58 am

    Re: posters.
Then again, there’s the distribution problem.
UH isn’t like Tom Moffat. It doesn’t have the manpower to go around town dropping off posters.

  73. Long Time UH Fan July 18, 2009 9:16 am

    Good Morning Bulla,

Welcome Home to “The Beast”; Bet he’s enjoying the grindz and company at Nancy’s!

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid July 18, 2009 9:24 am

    Stephen-
How many posters were distributed each year? How many locations? Just wondering…

  75. mctruck July 18, 2009 9:29 am

So, any word on what’s on the horizon for the Leahey’s???

  76. bb July 18, 2009 9:36 am

What is the “real” story about the Leahey and Leahey? Was it a cost cutting measure?

I enjoyed their show to open the week and to close the week. Then you had Rob and Russ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I admit I was a sports radio whore and I would flip between both 1420 and 1500 on all days of the week.

What I dont understand is that I would tune in to 1500 and it was national programming. No warning, no heads up. Then Rob says he’s going to leave and now the Leahey’s are gone without even a goodbye. I have nothing against Bobby Curran. I guess he will be the only show in town.

I guess I got to get used to hearing “fire it up” every weekday morning now….

  77. mctruck July 18, 2009 9:36 am

How’s about UH asking kokua from Hawaiian Air for free advertising space in their inflight magazine promoting UH posters and other items for sale??? Likewise, HVB and Hotels throughout the state?

  78. Ralph July 18, 2009 9:55 am

thanks Brew great story on Wilhite and Suzuki…Wishing Wilhite a complete recovery and rehab

ST: re printed media guide for football….
I was informed before last season that the printed media guides typically given to season ticket holders was ending. Do you know what the case will be for this year?

Mahalo for the link to the article on Jon Wilhite and Kurt Suzuki. We’ve got to get these guys to the all-star game next year! We get to vote online, don’t we? 🙂

RE: Bobby’s ‘capping of WAC teams. No mention of a new coach and system at NM St.? Seriously.

  86. addahknowjoe July 18, 2009 10:54 am

    About those posters-

They should still make layouts and save them as PDF files. Then let the fans download and print their own if they want.

Design it in three different sizes: Letter, Legal and Tabloid. Get design students to create them.

  87. addahknowjoe July 18, 2009 10:56 am

    KAUAI KATTLE KALL KANCELLED

    at least postponed.
Koakane is unable to come so wafan and I are going to chill out (that is a facetious statement from the sun-heated lands of west Kauai) at home for awhile.

We may try for an EARLY, EARLY Monday AM breakfast at Dani’s.

    Stay tuned.

    Congrats to Leonard Peters!!!

    Hiya Brew!

Hope the action is happening at Nancy’s!

    Hiya, Brew:

your #30 – we are stuck with the travel agency’s seats for the Wazzu game and unsure where we will be sitting. Will keep an eye out for you!

I don’t think most of us knew that you would be going to this game – lousy excuse for not inviting you to sit with the Tsaikos!!

Will you be joining us for the Sunday tour of Undergrund City, Pike’s Market, and lunch at that “crab/lobster/shell fish place?

    The Beast looks Beastly….

  102. Garret July 18, 2009 1:51 pm

Congratulations to Leonard Peters! The USA coach’s words of praise does not surprise any Warrior fan.

USA 7s head coach Al Caravelli leads his team to the World Games to be played July 24 and 25 in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.

Caravelli has picked three players who have never played for the USA 7s team before – Ata Malifa, Colin Hawley and Leonard Peters.

Peters is completely new, having just come back to rugby after a long period of success playing football at the University of Hawaii and then pushing for an NFL spot. He has been playing 7s with Aspen but is still a work in progress.

“I think in retrospect I probably should have taken Dallas Robinson along on a couple of tournaments as a 12th man to use his athleticism,” Caravelli said of another crossover prospect, who is now injured. “Leonard has such speed and explosiveness he is really impressive. In addition, his professionalism and how he fits in with the team chemistry is outstanding.”

Just back from some shopping after a very good bcc with the crew. Thanks all around for the turnout to welcome the Eastman Ohana to our humble side of heaven.

Special thanks to Kazz for showing up with an extra Warrior Jack for da judge. I was facing 20 years to life if Kazz nevah bail me out!

Gramma Pestana was there, and thank God and Greyhound for Big Wave for bringing her (and the Tsaiko’s) extra copies of the feature article on her young ‘un. Gramma told Myki that she really enjoyed talking football with the Tsaiko Ohana and wants to be included in our cc’s.

One thing she assured me of is, when Brashton came home, she let it be known right away that she IS still the commander-in-chief. First order of the day was, “Eh Boy!…go take da trash out.” Some things just never change, like her being at fb practice early.

No doubt that the Bulla Ohana was looking very ‘together’ today. Nice to see Lynn and family enjoying a family breakfast with all of us at a sober occasion for a change. Funny how not having Koakane around has made such a difference in that respect. Hmmm pahtna…we gotta talk.

Rob25 and Slugger you girls missed a good breakfast without any objectional animal parts to worry about. We did talk about Oyster Kim Chee that Liz is fine tuning for the opening game T-gate, but it was just anitcipation of that happening.

Ralph ordered French Toast for breakfast, and then ordered and ate chopped steak for lunch. Myki and Jeri had Curveball drooling over their Hawaiian plate combo for lunch!

Pops was happy to order his usual short stack of pancakes. Good to see him enjoying regular food after 10 days of hospital yuck!

Liz called in breaking news at noon to report that Waimea is harboring a known Tsaiko. The town is under threatcon level Bravo for the duration of the weekend. Rumor control indicates that there is a slight chance that he may have brought an accomplice from Oahu with him.

Didn’t he mention something about being at a Marriot hotel? Hello…Security….

  142. Garret July 18, 2009 9:13 pm

The Austin-American Statesman has BSU as the #13 team in the country to start the season.

Coming off a spectacular freshman season, left-handed quarterback Kellen Moore should be even better as a sophomore. He threw for 3,486 yards and 25 touchdowns to help the Broncos to within two points of an unbeaten season.

A year ago, Boise State had the Western Athletic Conference’s No. 1-rated defense – and the No. 3-ranked scoring defense in the country – but the Broncos lost all but two starters from their front seven.

Boise State’s most-promising NFL prospect appears to be cornerback/punt returner Kyle Wilson. The school has had just one player taken in the first round of the NFL draft – offensive tackle Ryan Clady was selected by Denver as the 12th overall pick in 2008.

Wilson has been projected by ESPN to be a first-rounder in 2010. An All-WAC defender, he led the team with five picks last season and returned 33 punts for 470 yards and three touchdowns.

A small town (3,800 residents) in Canada is being relocated a mile away so that a mining company can get at the gold deposits under its streets and houses. More than 6 million ounces of gold lie underneath the town, so the mining company is moving the buildings a mile away and has promised to build them a state-of-the-air school and community center, golf course, and the mining will create hundreds of jobs.

  152. Slugger July 18, 2009 9:37 pm

    Aloha, gang!

Glad everyone had a great morning at Nancy’s. I had pastele w/ rice & beans (Spanish rice, I think they said), then kulolo from the B.I., which was not as good, not even close, to MsLiz’ neighbor’s on Kaua’i. Lots of hula, but … not as many people there as I have see at Moanalua Gardens in past years. You can see the effect that the economy has on visitors & the events that the kama’aina go to. Maybe 1/3 – 1/2 the number of people there as I’ve seen in the past. So, nobody wen cock-a-roach space on my mat, Kekoa.

The guys in Kaleo Trinidad’s halau! oh,my! I could see a number of them as wide receivers, not bulky like OL or DL, but muscle definition… And Warriors! When the first young man danced “Hole Waimea”… Wow! You could see why Kamehameha conquered the islands. Tsaikettes woulda loved watching these men dance.

Wonder what Leonard Peters looked like when he performed at the Polynesian shows? Good luck to Leonard playing rugby!

Lots of fun being with my Kumu, her husband & my hula sisters today. We got up and danced during the kanikapila ending segment of the program. Felt like I never left them. Always in my heart.

    Back to football…

I’ve become a lurker on my own blog since they sometimes forget to invite me to parties.

ST ~ *They* published the Bulla Breakfast call twice a day for several days! The only thing *They* haven’t done yet is figure out a way to put it in Braille!

  163. Kekoa July 18, 2009 10:58 pm

Slugger ~ Glad you enjoyed the Prince Lot Festival. No cockroaches?! It was prolly because of the rain huh?

    Did you invite ST??

  164. Kekoa July 18, 2009 11:11 pm

ST ~ Ok…I know why you are upset. Ralph sent a personal invitation to Roysan16 and WarriorFanny2.

I will have to scold Ralph for not sending one to you, because I cannot accept the blame for this oversight. Why?…because I have already reached my daily quota of ‘1’ mistake – which I apologized to D-1 for earlier today.

  167. Kekoa July 18, 2009 11:19 pm

Al ~ Wait until you taste my Oxtail soup! It’s as close to Kapiolani tasting as I can make it.

Kinda like my Lomi Salmon, it’s all about big chunks of Ox and very little tail…combined with the finest ingredients I can find to bring out the flavor enhanced broth made wit da greens ‘n gravy. Simmered to perfection and eaten with a side of German Brot. MMMmmmMMM!!

  168. d1島 July 18, 2009 11:22 pm

  170. Kekoa July 18, 2009 11:29 pm

D-1 ~ Thanks for pulling me back from the edge! Wait till I tell you what happened here on the ranch this eve. It will convince you of the kind of problem I’m having with my memory bank.

  171. al July 18, 2009 11:42 pm

Whitey ~ I hope when you awaken, you read this.

Sorry I missed your post…lost power for a little while. About that Salmon, you got a deal my friend!

Also let me know when you want to go Salmon fishing in Alaska again so I can alert my son up there to take you with him on the Kenai.

  186. Ralph July 19, 2009 12:57 am

now the question, did ST pass over my post? I hope that was an oversight and not a regular occurrence…

  187. Kekoa (iPhone) July 19, 2009 1:20 am

    Aloha folks…
Great to see old friends and meet new one’s at Nancy’s…

The Beast’s Ring could have fit on ring and middle finger (taped together). Glad to catch up with him before he, bro, and sis had to depart.

Great to meet Mrs. Pestana and talk about her Alvis, Crash, Liko, and Chanteal..

I only wished I could have partaken in the feast… The fuud looked so ono I was thinking about it too much and missed the freeway entrance toward Waianae side and thus I had to drive all the way through Waipahu Town and caught every single light… I thought I saw Homey at every intersection (no not in a brokeback kind of way)..

Waterpark with NewWave was fun.. We went close ’em down..

Bulla and Ohana… See you in our Father’s House in a few hours..

  189. BigWave96744 July 19, 2009 1:55 am

    djmitcho,
Tell Allen Allen that our Castle High 25th class reunion is on Saturdaya Sept 26th. Same place as the 20th (Kaneohe Marine Base Officer’s Club)…

BTW1 at the 20th, Allen was voted something like most celebrated/visible/popular classmate along with Dr. Ligaya Stice (former Miss Hawaii ’89 and NE Patriots Cheerleader).

BTW2 The “A-Bomb” also a great singer and once sang the National Anthem at a HS Assembly

BTW3 “Double A” was known more as Basketball and Football player in HS. Boys Vball wasn’t that big back then in HS.

  190. Kekoa (iPhone) July 19, 2009 2:28 am

BW96744 ~ Thanks for taking a detour to Nancy’s. You were there long enuff to go ahead and have breakfast with us. But I understand why didn’t. Good daddy!

  191. BigWave96744 July 19, 2009 3:55 am

Was thinking if Mrs. C and/or SteveM shared their Colt Cards:
    – would KoaMahu have to fight with the Tsaikettes on who gets one of the 4 Queens?
    – would Chawan_Cut need to out do Homey as the Joker?
    – and I suppose
    — Ace of Diamonds = D1
    — King of Clubs = SteveM (King of Club Genji)
    — 7 of hearts = Midori7
    — 9 of clubs = 99club or is it club99
oh and when all the cards are distributed, cheepono will sadly say, “Cheepono out”

Article about 6’3″ grayshirt walkon WR Bennett Nicola. It sounds like Bennett recruited UH instead of the other way around, as he chose UH because of Academics (excellent Marine Biology program).

Acrobatic catches were the norm for the spindly Glenwood Springs High School graduate, a major cog in the Demons’ march to a state football title in 2008.

“He’s just a good athlete,” said former Glenwood quarterback Dakota Stonehouse, who’s tossed many a pass in Nicola’s direction in recent years. “He has all the tools and everything that you need to have. If I threw it high or I threw it low, he’d go get the ball. He had the ability to make the plays.”

The sure-handed receiver’s coordination and athletic ability certainly seized the attention of coaches at the University of Hawaii, where last month he successfully tried out and made the football roster as a walk-on.

“I originally went over there just for a high school camp,” Nicola said. “When I got over there, they said don’t even worry about the high school camp. I did seven-on-seven with the college guys — quarterbacks and receivers — for three days. I went into the coach’s office and talked to him and he said I made it.”

“I was really nervous about my size,” Nicola admitted. “Once I saw the guys, they weren’t too big. They were really fast. Once I got out there and started playing with them, it felt good catching the ball.”

Coaches assured Nicola that, once fully entrenched in Hawaii’s lifting program, the muscle will come.

Nicola brings plenty else to the table. And he’s been selling his qualities to Hawaii’s coaches for some time now.

“I continually kept calling the past year, keeping in touch,” he said, “making my name known.”

Hawaii’s been Nicola’s target for some time. The school offers his major of choice — marine biology — and a highly competitive football program.
