UH-USC game on; UH media guides off
As “Ferd” reports, the UH-USC game will be played Sept. 2, as planned.

You can look it up.
Oh, wait. You can’t. Not unless you have a computer, printer and a lot of time.
UH is joining the growing number of schools that will no longer print media guides for wide distribution. The guides will be available on the school’s Web site.
Media guides are essentially yearbooks with bios of players and coaches, plus informational (promotional?) pages on facilities and services, as well as a records section.
The NCAA ruled that schools no longer could send media guides to recruits. But now UH has gone further, joining schools that no longer will publish hard copies for general distribution. Instead, UH will make a limited number of printouts of the media guide, and distribute them only to reporters who cover their games. Those spiral-bound printouts only will be available for football, men’s basketball and women’s volleyball.
Cutting production will offer significant savings for UH, which used to spend about $100,000 publishing media guides for each of its sports. It cost about $30,000 to print hard-copy media guides for only football and women’s volleyball last year.

As expected, Utah is headed to the Pac-10.
If, say, the Mountain West Conference loses two more members — TCU and BYU to the Big 12? — does the 11-year-old league raid the WAC. Or will both become partners? Or should the WAC start thinking about raiding the Mountain West.
Thoughts?
Someone in the know told me this would be an opportune time for UH to go independent in football. The selling point would be the time slot, and the motivation would be to solicit bids from television networks. I don’t necessarily agree; it would be difficult to schedule home games in October and November. But, hey, would that be any worse than a big showdown against UC Davis?

Happy birthday to SJMacro.
First!
Ideally, they should become partners but realistically they’ll raid the WAC. If TCU & BYU leave, then WTH did B$U leave for?
Most schools already stopped printing media guides, so this is something UH can save money on without having a competitive disadvantage.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,
I finally found you! One reason not to print media guide is because of what has happened these past couple of weeks with conference changes.
The WAC will not raid the MWC because Benson is not that type of guy. He strikes me as wanting to see whether the holes in the ship will sink it rather than try to plug it. He is the frog sitting in the pot waiting for it to boil.
Good Morning
jmxxxx –
Don’t think WAC will be proactive – wish I was wrong.
Having Fumbler II WAC leadership doesn’t provide or instill confidence.
Wonder if BSU having second thoughts or happy they only need to travel
within the mountain region – for now.
Happy sailing Garret and Ohana!
BC will be having Coach Mack on the air.
Great Morning All!
Guideless better than Clueless…
TCU probably doesn’t have anywhere to go. The Big 12 owns the Texas TV market, especially the DFW area, so TCU won’t add anything for them.
BYU would love to be in the Big 12, but they apparently are going after Arkansas, Notre Dame, Louisville, and others first. Plus, the Big 12 won’t expand for several years–they cannot get more from one of their TV contracts until 2016, so every school would have to take less money if they expanded.
So, if the MWC won’t lose teams for 4-5 years, they can add teams when they wish to. They have a lot more revenue than the WAC or C-USA, which gives them power in adding teams.
The biggest reason the MWC has to add teams is to add/keep AQ status. They can see which teams win the WAC or C-USA and try to add the ones that are a good geographical fit.
good early morning to everyone
top ten I hope, when or will they number these post and add bigger left margins?
yep agree with others that Benson better start being proactive or WAC will be stepping stones to other conferences.
The WAC commish, along with the AD’s and presidents all have their options layed out, just waiting to decide what to do.
The WAC is very vulnerable to be plucked if needed to be by the MWC.
But isn’t the latest motto ” Less is more” seem desirable for money distribution per team amongst the conference? hence the Big 12 standing firm.
I don’t think UH actually needs an online media guide as long as it keeps records and other useful information online.
I do think it’s funny that they still put all of the promotional nonsense in the online media guide.
Could Boise cancel their move if TCU and BYU do leave? That pretty much leaves them in a conference essentially the same as the WAC.
I say kick either Utah State or New Mexico out and combine the two conferences to get a 14 team league with 2 divisions.
Good Morning Tsai-kos!
Top Twenty!
Think the Big 12 needs to add two more to keep its championship football game.
Plus, that name is just so wrong with only 10 members.
Everybody who wants to put down BSU leaving the WAC (especially in other forums) keeps saying that TCU and BYU are going to leave. Where will they go?
The facts are that even without Utah the MWC passes 2 of the 3 criteria for automatic AQ status. They are pretty close to passing all 3 criteria and if their bottom half wins enough nonconference games (UH has to beat UNLV!), they could get it.
The MWC gets about $3 million more per year than the WAC and has lower travel costs. There is a reason why the MWC added BSu and the WAC is looking at D-IAA teams…no matter how much I don’t like Karl Benson, money is power in D-IA sports and the WAC has no money.
Wish list:
Blog posting on Star-Advertiser site.
2. Getting the numbers back. (We need to help Avis when contest season rolls around again.)
3. Resuming the video show.
If the TV money stays the same for the Big XII with or without a championship game it makes no sense for the 10 teams to add two more splits to the pie…
ST,
The TV contract rights to the Big 12 title game won’t come up for negotiation until 2015. They were able to get an agreement to pay them the same amount they had been expected to get even though they won’t have a championship game. TV agreed to pay them the same if they had 10 or 12 teams…so adding 2 teams will just cost them money.
Adding TCU would add NOTHING to their TV contract and reduce what every other school will get.
So, maybe the Big 12 can add teams in 2015. The MWC will probably have expanded again by then and who knows what the WAC will look like in 5 years?
The only wildcard is that Jerry Jones *really* wants to get Arkansas into the Big 12. He is one of the big donors for Arkansas and he has the rights to host the Big 12 title game at his stadium…but they won’t have a title game soon! So, he has a big financial incentive to try to get 2 more teams in the Big 12.
However, Jerry Jones wants teams like Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Louisville. He’s apparently willing to pay a lot for those types of teams to be added but he doesn’t mention any MWC teams.
GO WARRIORS!
JUST DO IT!
JUST WIN!
UH going independent would eliminate all sports from UH very quickly. The nonrevenue sports like softball, baseball, soccer, etc., would not have a conference to play in and would fold. If enough women’s sports were lost, UH has to cut football due to Title IX.
Notre Dame is having a hard time scheduling football games now because conferences are trying to get all nonconference games played early in the season. They are fortunate to have the Big East conference to take in all their other teams, and the Big East makes nearly as much in basketball than they do from being a BCS conference. The only equivalent would be for the Pac-12 to take UH in for all non-football sports…if that doesn’t happen, the economics are MUCH different for UH than for Notre Dame.
Anyone else think the bubble has to burst?
Where’s all of this TV money coming from? I know companies have been scaling back on advertising during these difficult economic times, Remember how even Pepsi didn’t advertise during the Super Bowl.
Count the number of house ads on a K5 telecast.
Say, the Big Ten keeps growing and hits 16. More TV money? Uh, sure. But if you’re Indiana, when are your football games ever going to be on TV?
Think about how many Baylor football telecasts you’ve ever watched, and that was when the Big 12 had 12 teams.
As I’ve learned in the past couple of years, the good times do not roll forever.
I agree with haka and I should stop disagreeing with people before I get SMU’d…so I’ll stop talking about the realignment stuff now.
Garret:
I think the suggestion was for UH to go into the Big West for other sports.
Or it could stay in the WAC and cut its own football television deal.
What? Wouldn’t that be against WAC rules?
I think we’ve learned that a team can pretty much do anything it wants in the WAC.
Oh, I don’t mind people disagreeing.
I just don’t tolerate name-calling between posters.
Anyway, I thought it was funny that SMU’d has become part of our lexicon.
A more immediate concern is the non-response from the NCAA about the season opener…
ST,
Actually, TV money is flowing into sports from other types of TV broadcasts. 2 reasons for this:
1. DVRs have *completely* changed the TV commercial market. Instead of having a minority of TV watching be from recorded events, now it appears that a significant portion of TV watching from DVR recordings. TV networks get their money from commercials…but people who use their TiVos or other DVRs fast-forward to them. What is the *one* category that people watch live now? Sports. That makes sports more valuable to TV than ever before…and since the use of DVRs is growing significantly, sports are expected to be more valuable to TV in the future.
2. Advertisers want to reach 18-34 year old men, and they are getting harder every year to reach outside of sports. This is a slightly bigger factor each year, but not as big as the DVR impact.
The entire TV industry is in trouble because they cannot get people to watch commercials when they have a DVR. However, sports solves that problem…so, they want to show more sports and less soap operas or dramas.
ST
Apologies on the John Wooden book mixup. The devil (jm#€£¥) made me do it!
808ike
Yes shame on me! Can’t promise it won’t happen again though. I have to start listening to, well you know.
GOOD MORNING TSAIKOS!
the $1M payday aside, it would be great to have those Diamond Head/beach shots on nationwide TV right at the start of the season.
With SC as the opponent playing their first game since the sanctions came out, it would be a smash hit in the ratings…keep your fingers crossed…heck, throw in the toes, too!
ST,
Why would the Big West increase their travel costs without getting any real benefit by adding UH? There is an interesting article today about how the Big West schools are being squeezed on their budgets and they are worried that their entire league might soon disband. You want that conference to subsidize UH?
ESPN could show as many UH games as they wanted…how many football games did they pick this year for football and how many basketball games did they show last year?
Have a terrific day erryboddy!
HiHo….
Some of the quotes from the Big West Commissioner that were published today:
There is another article I read this morning (got up at 5:20am when the alarm was set for 7am, so I had extra time to work and to surf the web) where the Big West commissioner talked about their difficult financial situation.
Another article that discussed Montana’s possible interest in the WAC mentioned that Montana doesn’t have the money to increase its budget up to D-IA standards, but they are worried because it appears their entire conference could collapse since several teams could be giving up football soon and others could move up to D-IA.
I agree that UH going to independent status would be a disaster for UH sports. If the students don’t want to pay for UH sports and the lawmakers don’t want to pay for UH sports, who is going to pay for all the travel costs for ALL the UH teams. UH doesn’t have the political pull that Notre Dame does. UH can’t get a TV deal by themselves like Notre Dame did. Even Miami had to go to a conference when they were an independent and doing good in football.
Hey ST, what numbers are you talking bout?
I kind of like the media guides online, they should make the downloadable maybe for a small fee.
Garret if the WAC and MWC merged would they be able to negotiate a new TV deal? If so that could be a good reason to do that, also would that perchance make it easier to get the AQ status?
I agree why can’t the WAC become a raider ? OK, maybe the WAC isn’t the most desirable conference but at least be pro active and let the world know that you are doing something besides siting on your butts.
Cheyah:
The numbers on the side of the posts. Makes it easier for Avis to pick winners when we have contests.
Some have said that the Mountain West could invite Fresno and Nevada, among some other schools, to join. If that occurs, where would that leave UH ?
It’s so funny all this cut throat, run for the money business going on in college football. As UH fans, we always will have an inferiority complex. We talk about other schools bolting for other conferences like they did something wrong. But we know good and well that should the MWC, PAC10 or any other major conference come calling on UH, we would jump faster than an a’ama crab on a Puna shoreline. What about our peers in the wac? We’d be like “what peers?” It’s all about the money and every man/team is out for himself. IT is what it is.
BIK
Did I mention that June Jones is on Maui?
His golf tournament is this week. Warren Moon is among the golfers. No, Rich2176 this year. His father is celebrating his 75th birthday this weekend.
If Fresno State and Nevada leave the WAC, then UH would be in deep trouble.
By the way, throwing out the independent theory wasn’t made as an option. Of course, it’s better to stay in a league. But I’m not 100 percent certain UH will be in a league in 10 years.
Travel costs are going to go up rather than down.
Hawaii still doesn’t have any Fortune 500 companies.
Heck, it can’t event settle on a rail issue.
The window of opportunity is very small. There’s a Hawaii-born president in the White House and powerful senator in Washington.
Now is the time to be proactive.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
A video clip from athletic Directors conference on realignment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY-03vYYAjA
Sorry, couldn’t resist that one! 😆
And I don’ blame Garret for sharing info. Can’t blame the messenger can we?
This isn’t an original thought, but because Title IX is a federal law, and compliance affects federal grants, why not — as many have suggested — make the state pay for women’s sports? The revenue for the men’s sports then could be pooled, but there would be no bailouts. If the men can’t generate enough to cover their expenses, they either cut back or cut out.
I have a great idea. . . .
Aloha Stadium, Stan Sherrif Center, and other UH venues should offer FREE “WI-FI” capabilities so that fans/spectators can view the Media Guide online from the comforts of their seat via the hawaiiathletics.com web site.
Reply to ST : “Oh, I don’t mind people disagreeing…”
If we were to all think alike, many aren’t thinking.
Pomai,
The WAC’s poor performance on the field would prevent the MWC/WAC merger from coming anywhere close to AQ status. For example, adding UH to the MWC would drop their average team score and move them away from AQ status…adding SJSU, Utah State, and NMSU would bury their AQ hopes forever.
Only Nevada and Fresno State won enough in 2008 and 2009 to help the MWC’s AQ hopes…that is why they are always mentioned as candidates for the MWC.
If you combine the WAC and MWC, the TV contract will probably give less per school than the MWC gets now. Remember, they get 3x the TV money the WAC gets.
Yes, if Fresno & Nevada leave the WAC, UH will be in deep kimchi. I like your suggestion that the WAC should try to raid the Mountain West, but would any of those teams want to join the WAC ? Does the WAC have anything to offer those teams ?
ST,
If the financial burden of Title IX was removed, then you wouldn’t see so many schools being so desperate to raise more sports money. So few Athletic Departments break even today–only about 10% to 15% make a profit now, and that number is only that high because of the high TV dollars the SEC and Big 10 got.
A lot of schools are being blamed for being “greedy”. But their budgets are being cut by their states and their Athletic Departments are losing a lot of money. For example, Texas A&M has a bigger Athletic Department deficit than UH!
But what state has the money to fund Title IX? Might they just tell their Universities to cut football so that they didn’t have to provide the Title IX dollars?
Guud Morning Tsaikos…
ST..ditto your wish list…how do we get it going?..e-mails, phone calls, petitions…etc.?..who can trigger the programs?
If Fresno and Nevada left..then UH would be king of the hill..like Texas, is that why Texas was not moving?
The conferences who were left out should do like Pomai said..get together and form their own TV package “conference”…if it’s about money, then go after it with your own financial package. Gettting so it’s not about the schools or rivals or the collegiate atmosphere. …..”Show me the money!”
Good Morning Everyone:
Because of the screwuppedness of trying to get to the blog, I am really behind on this invitation. Sorry, no green or brown bottles allowed, but we can always go to nearby sports bar and get into a dustup at closing.
Please send me an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com for the balance of the details if you’d like to attend. Be sure to include your real as well as blog name + your Saturday phone number
We went to Doc’s Family Promise Program a couple of years ago. Great event; very worthwhile .
Actually, not having media guides is a good thing … for blogs.
More value when I give ’em away.
Texas and TAMU have the West Texas oil as a big cushion
Why can’t media guides be sold?…I’d like to buy one every year…like buying Phil Steeles publication..
Great article from the blog master this morning. I guess the upside here is that Tiwanak was Moniz’s center in JC.
Sppedy recovery to Lefiti!
Good morning Tsaikos….hope all is well and good for you today…
if BYU and/or TCU leaves, it would be there for the taking…. TCU probably leaves before BYU does
as long as everyone who thinks he’s entitled to one gets a copy first!
And we all know d1 would never think like that!!
why can i not get to the Warrior Beat vis the Star-Advertiser website?
i am still using the Advertiser site to access this blog.
Good morning, Tsaikos!
Even though JD couldn’t say anything specific about conference realignment on L&L, I get the sense that he’s working on a positive outcome for UH. I hope so. I would hate to see us left out on the side of the road, hitchhiking to a big game.
A-House –
Access the main page of the Honolulu Star Advertiser. Click on Sports at the top of the page. Once there, the blog should be on the right-hand side of the page in a box below a bunch of ads, etc.
What would I do?
Take a look at the Big West Conference. Nothing wrong with taking a look, right?
A league composed of nine California schools.
2 of the top 10 US media markets are in California
A total of 5 of the top 55 media markets are in California
Enrollments of the nine schools range from 20K to 40k
The conference’s back yard is filled with some of the best athletes in the US
2009 league RPI in baseball is 5 compared to the WAC’s 14 (writing from memory, so excuse if the facts are off).
IIRC 2009 RPI in basketball was higher than the WACs
UH currently plays volleyball in the MPSF conference, which is composed of a majority of the Big West schools
3 of the Big West schools play football (in the Western Conference?)
Shorter travel distance for UH. Plus when you look historically of the California vs. Hawaii rivalries (from HS football to collegiate competition) there’s traditionally a lot of fan interest on both sides in watching the teams compete. A lot of hype and fighting spirit emerge.
Depending what happens to the WAC, especially if they belly up, I think for UH the Big West Conference is not a very bad option (that is if they can get in). Volleyball, softball, swimming&diving, golf, baseball, basketball, track, soccer–are not taking a big step down from the WAC. Plus similarly to the WAC the championship teams in their respective sports get invites to post season play. What more can you ask for? Seemingly how I see it UH would be a good fit for this league. Now suppose Fresno and San Jose State see the potential of the Big West Conference and join in wouldn’t this be a league that ESPN would want to take stock in? Some of the best athletes in their back yards in the US? Check. Best media markets in the US? Check. To me the Big West has more potential than the WAC, and is a potential gold mine. UH has to plant it seeds in fertile soil. How I see it the Big West might be the answer if the WAC’s foothold dries up.
we knew as soon as Title IX started that sports would be in trouble as long as a school has football. now with the economy being bad and the universities struggling to maintain their sports programs, its becoming a dog eat dog venture. without thinking only about UH, but everybody as a whole, it looks like the smaller colleges and the struggling ones in D1, realistically, might seriously consider cutting football. i do agree that the women should have some kind of equal support, my daughter had a sports scholarship, but something has to be done. maybe considering all scholarships and government grants combined, not just sports, could give women a better chance for a scholarship or grant. this would give women more sclr/grants on the academic side. look at the sports at the local high schools. almost every public school, if not all, has a football team. with Title IX, there are many additional sports offered to girls than boys because of football like JV softball and soccer, cheerleading (mostly girls),etc.. what about the 9th and 10 grade boys who are not physically able to play against future college senior players? not offered a sport that they played since a young boy, they get downhearted and quit altogether. i really don’t know the answer to all of this but something has to be done, otherwise football for smaller schools will be history in the near future.
ST, later last night i couldn’t get into the blog as the SA apparently eliminated the Warrior Blog, but there was still the other blogs. was it just my computer or did everyone notice this?
Article in San Jose Mercury News with WAC expansion candidates.
Don’t we already have the necessary signatures on a form with blanks spaces to fill in all the fine print terms ready for dispatch?
its sad news about no media guides being printed again for this year. i remember thinking the same thing last year. for long time fans, new fans, your children, and everyone, personally i think they were a great in many ways. plus it rewarded season ticket holders with a free copy on the 1st home game.
maybe i could check with the bosses at work to see if we could print out some “unofficial” copies from the published online version. it’ll be as top-notch quality as the source file and ST could maybe give em away as blog prizes(hint hint).
read the San Jose Mercury article. the only new part that this blog failed to mention is adding 1 football member school and 1 non football for the rest of the sports. it said the WAC could survive on 8 teams alone for football and cutting the pie 8 ways instead of 9. but adding 1 football would make more sense. the 1 school that doesn’t have football that could join the WAC could be a school like Gonzaga who are competitive nationally in especially basketball and other smaller sports but probably would not leave the WCC. unfortunately, the football school hopefuls remain the same. Says if we take Montana, than being a state thing, we may have to take Montana State too, which is what the WAC wouldn’t want. it also says that San Diego State may consider joining the WAC because it would be on a reduced budget.
Another article (just like the SJMN article that mih posted) that mentions that to get Montana the WAC would also need to take Montana State. Montana State isn’t ready to move to D-IA, both athletically and with their facilities, and bring a tiny TV market. Every WAC school would end up with a lot less money in that scenario.
The scenarios listed in the SJMN article don’t appeal to me.
Maybe Tsai’s right about going independant.
The only thing I can think of has aleady been said:
Just win!
I wonder how much Benson gets paid…hope it’s less than our manini tv contracts
It’s cold in Montana…especially when you’re outside waiting for one of the few flights out!
UC Davis brings the biggest TV market and they have an expandable new stadium
Think about being in the Big Sky if worst case scenario plays out and WAC folds
Hate to see the only Mater Dei Monarch grad not making the start of the season. Recover quickly Sili
Great day for TV, US Open, Tiger teeing off now and Lakers to follow!
I like the idea of having potential DII schools with solid programs outside of football (Basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc.) being brought into the WAC as “non” football members first … let them build their fan support and financial base before making the leap to D1 football. It wouldn’t hurt the WAC’s image to add such members and could serve as the DII early season competition for many of the WAC D1 teams.
Actually having DII schools with exceptional teams in other sports in the WAC might help the WAC’s overall image as it becomes more competitive in other areas besides football. These also become a factor when negotiating TV contracts.
This is like Alice in Wonderland where I believe the white rabbit says something to the effect that, “you’re late, you’re late to a very importnat date”.
Don’t blame Benson or the WAC. Sure the WAC went and got itself weak after BYU and company bolted. Yes, Benson was at the wheel and if he was a stronger commish that probably would not have happened as it did.
BUT, in the above, we let someone else control our fate. We saw the handwriting on the wall when those folks bolted and we simply went along.
Now the clock has or is about to strike again and we’re still waiting…and maybe, just maybe being too late this time to even being at the table.
WE have to come to the realization that sports in Hawaii is not a big event, not as it used to be, not with the people who can make a difference. If it was or is a BIG event, we would have been proactive. Instead, we waited and let someone else place the place cards at the table and hoped that we would not be left out. We chose not to force our way to be at the table by expecting more and acting on it, especially when the first group left the party to start their own tea party.
So, let’s look at the options. I agree with ST that like it or not we may be an independent. Let’s not cry about that fate, do something about it. Let’s become that entity that everyone wants at their tea party.
If not, remember when the cheshire cat grinned and slowly disappeared? That’s the conferences, smiling as they exit leaving us, like Alice lost and wondering where to go and what to do next.
Papajoe:
As I understand it, the blog displays are like Genki Sushi.
They keep rotating, with the freshest being on top.
I guess there were a lot of blog postings yesterday. We must learn to share.
Utah joins Pac-10.
I’ve been using Google Chrome and the blog goes according to time date stamped order. No numbers or shaded entries that I see others experience. Much faster response time from the HA controlled blog.
This is a great post, I stumbled across your story while looking for song lyrics. Thanks for sharing, I’ll be sure to return regularly.
(And I don’t mind that my Spam links have been deleted.)
Again, independence wouldn’t be my first choice.
But I don’t see the harm in UH calling some of the networks and asking: If we went independent, and agreed to play all of our games at 11 p.m. Eastern time, how much would you pay?
Several years ago, I thought the Rainbow Classic was the greatest tournament. Now a school can’t put on an attractive tournament without ESPN’s help. Why not have ESPN, you know, sort of take over UH athletics?
Breaking news on the SA that the USC game is ON. Too bad the headline has the wrong date.
You gotta Zig when everybody Zags.
Maybe UH athletics should be monitored by the Legislature instead of the BOR.. Seems ever since UH went to Self-Autonomy, the athletic department has suffered year.. after year…
Stretch I guess they read the blog, it now changed to the right date.
Happy Birthday Jerry!
Does anyone know how to get ahold of LK or if he see’s this could you email me Pomai at tsai-kos.com
Pomai – ST must have corrected them. Go call AJoe re: LK.
Yay!! A lot of people went through a lot of trouble to keep this game on the board.. let’s hope our Warriors will be up to the challenge and make it well worth the effort… especially with ESPN broadcasting it.
The whole nation will be watching SC on Sept. 2nd.
Pomai call LK at House of Photography
Zig when they Zag.
Happy Birthday sj!
MadeinHawaii:
You might have something there.
I always read stories about “John Burns this …” and “John Burns that …”
Well, guess what? If he were governor today, his vision of conferences wouldn’t matter because the way things are set up.
Good morning ladies and gentleman!
Happy birthday to sjmarco!
Is today sj-macro’s birthday?
I’m at work today so don’t have my birthday list handy… if so,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SJ-MACRO !!
🙂
I think it would be a nice payback to the MWC if we went in and raided their conference. It’s time to give them a taste of what they did a decade ago.
Pride –
Yup! We got what we wanted, now let’s go and beat some Trojan okole!
Happy Birthday sj!
Happy birthday, sjmacro!!!
Good news about the USC game.
Cal thomas in his article in the editorial section makes reference to one of my all time favoriate movies, Paint Your Wagon, with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin.
What really caught my attention was his reference to the lyrics of a song sung toward the end of the movie when people were leaving this mining town. This has reference to what is happening to the WAC today.
” Where am I goin?” “I don’t know.” “When will I get there?” “I ain’t certain”. “All that I know is I am on my way.”
How appropo!!
aww shucks i didnt realize the online media guide isn’t downloadable… i guess my idea of printing them out is out of the question. thats kinda junk if you ask me 🙁
Pomai: LK is my dad, when i see him, i’ll let him know you are trying to get in touch with him..or it may be faster if you send email to studio at houseofphoto dot com
Wwhat! Today is sjmacro’s BD. Dang, saw him yesterday and not a word. Happy Birfday, sj!!
If the MWC loses BYU and TCU, would FSU and Nevada stay in the WAC or try bolting to the MWC? Does the MWC have a more lucrative offer than the WAC?
Our future as an athletic program on the D1 level depends on 3 things:
1. Win on the football field.
Now that realignment has settled down for the moment, Hawaiʻi Football has a very small window to turn things around and start winning before major moves are made. But, they canʻt just shoot to sneak into the Hawaiʻi bowl with a 7 win season, they need to win big — an undefeated season and a BCS Bowl birth consideration would probably be needed to make us at least a little bit attractive to another conference. The only think worse than our TV market size is our location out in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
2. Fan and community support
In addition to winning on the field, our fans and community need to start supporting the athletics program a lot more than when we just have a good team every now and then.
3. Increase the athletic budget/State funding for stadium renovation
Improving facilities on campus should be our main priority. Figuring out how to bring Aloha Stadium into the now would be the next. Raising money through student fees, boosters/prominent alumni, legislature would have to finance everything. A strong athletics program (especially a football team) helps to bring in money (duh) and raises the prestige of a University. Look what happened to Boise St. Spend money to make money.
Wow, Slugger, you found your way.
I noticed you “inadvertently” posted on the wrong blog.
Hmmm… I have numbers on my posts. The last # is 107 or is this not the # you’re talking bout? Oh well, hope it gets fixed although I don’t see any problems.
OK, now that the 9/2/10 game is on, wonder which team will be motiviated – SC to disprove all critics that the “penalties” hurt them or UH out to prove that Warrior football is fo real!!!
It sure would be nice to start 2010 with 3 and 0 record after the road trip!! Talk about making a statement!
115 now
+1
Go Warriors!
A-House–
Gotta have faith! I think the OL is the key to this year’s offense rolling. Got to give the QB time to throw the ball. Hope the OL can gel during the summer.
Happy Birthday sjmacro!
Speaking of football, when do the football team resume practices?
Good to hear about the USC game! UH needs that money and needs that type of nationally televised game to get the attention of the media and public. Now the Warriors have a chance to show what they can do on the field…and it doesn’t hurt that USC will need to adjust to a new coaching staff, new systems, and with the expected loss of some of their players that transfer.
Heard in the areas surrounding the Little Big Horn: “Now we got ’em right where we want ’em…”
heheheh
I had no problems getting on the blog using my history from the old Advertiser site…but then Idon’t get on very much.
Have a great day everyone!! It’s been interesting reading.
Hola,
Made it as far as San Diego minus one bag at Hawaiian in HNL, one phone on the counter at home, one passport in the secretary at the office.
Jun Tao
Great idea about free Wi-Fi. How expensive would it be? Minimal. Turn on for games and turnoff for other times as a security measure. Fiber is already in the buildings.
MEDIA GUIDES
I asked about printing them for Na Koa members right before I left.
I believe Hakadone did the printing. What a great fundraiser for UHAD and the programs. What a great booster club membership benefit! If no intreest their then a Tsaiko fundraiser.
I intend to bring this up to Letterwinner’s Club on 07.15.2010 and look to run it as a donation to scholarships.
UH already has the digital copy so running it to a printer in orders of 500 would be no problem. A media guide that is tax deductible??
I’m studying something else about this on yet another webpage. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically opposed to what I go through to start with. I am even now contemplating in excess of the several things of view, but I’m tipped to a good extent toward yours. And no matter, that is what is really excellent about modern-day democracy plus the marketplace of ideas on the net.
I miss the days when the spambots just use one-liners!
Tsigh….
Hi Rob25!
Hi Don Weir!
I dunno. If UH football goes independent, what kind of leverage do the other sports have in hooking up with other conferences. Obviously Warrior vball and women’s water polo have the MPSF, but what about the others?
Hi Don:
Will the passport left in Hawaii prevent you guys from getting into Mexico or will you stop by another passport office and secure a replacement?
Hope all goes well and “hook up” to many, many big ones!!!
Whoa Pride ZigZags. Sound familiar.
Wouldn’t the MWC be happy if the WAC took UNLV and SanDiego St.? At the risk of settling,… its Not like any WAC teams can play for the national championship every year in this BCS system. Just get most WAC teams to be bowl eligible to make money. And Prob UNLV and SDSU could have an easier time becoming bowl eligible in the WAC. haha! But somehow gotta find LaTech another conference.
Kazz:
Maybe the Big West will again accept UH as a partner for the other sports since we have some good history with them.
Tho’, they were salty when the Wahine VB team said aloha, but it was because of pressure from the WAC to move. Ha, whomever it was must be sorry now that UH has completely cominated the WAC and won 16 consecutive, is this correct?, VB championships.
ever heard of a word “cominated” – fool, it should be dominated!!!
Hey Rob25
Met Charlie, I bet you’re a better golfer. 🙂
BG:
wafan is not a “short-timer” – he is “next”!!!
Kazz,
The Big West would *not* take the Wahine sports and non-football men’s sports because they would lose a lot of money with travel. The Big West schools have limited Athletic Department budgets and they spend very little on travel.
Travel costs have skyrocketed since the last time UH had any relationship with the Big West. *All* Big West schools are located in California and the public Universities have gotten their budgets squeezed significantly in the past few years, so this is NOT the situation UH had before.
UH is not a fit for either the WCC or the Big West. Going independent in football means that UH would have to go independent in all sports. Scheduling would be basically impossible for the nonrevenue sports. Then when a few Wahine teams have to fold, UH will be forced to drop football.
UH is in the WAC now and the only other option is to win big in football to get into the MWC. When Mack talks about going independent, he doesn’t realize how Title IX, travel costs, and other fundamental changes have happened since Miami was an independent. Miami had to join a conference and even Notre Dame has talked about how they will have to probably join a conference soon.
duffer:
how come you are meeting all the UH coaches? are they seeking your great “marketing” skills on the open fields?
caution them on the “darkside” – oh, is whitey still on island? he takes so many trips hard to keept track whea he stay.
The MWC said in their press conference today that they will *stay* at 9 teams. So, Fresno and Nevada will have to wait for their invitation keep winning…if another team (like UH) ends up dominating the WAC, then that team will have the BCS points that the MWC needs.
Garret:
next time you meet Mrs A-House give he some good vibes on “cruising” – been trying to get her on an Alaska in-side-passge for over 25 years – she and Midori are even more sensative to motion sickness than I am.
used the “patch” 2 years ago on my Alaska fishing trip and sold on them to keep my sea-legs steady and strong – always have red ginger and li hing mui as back up.
what if we are 6-7 at the end of the year?
then im going to wish the USC game was canceled…
Okay.. so what bowls does the WAC have left?
This was a smart decision by the MWC. Their #1 goal is to get AQ status. What the media has failed to mention is that conferences with 9 teams get a *25%* bonus in the BCS formula. The formula is set up that way to be able to compare 9-team conferences with 12-team conferences.
So, even if the MWC could get teams that were as strong as their current teams, they would *hurt* their AQ chances because they would lose the 25% bonus.
By the way, losing Utah and adding BSU has improved the MWC’s rating in one of the 3 criteria (they went from #3 to #1 in 1 criteria) and not had much effect on the others. If everything stayed this way, they would qualify for the appeal process and probably get AQ status.
Can the WAC please be proactive and try and get UNLV before the Mountain West tries to grab Nevada or Fresno (No they are not coming for Hawaii).
A-House,
My wife and younger daughter got sea-sick when we went whale watching earlier this year. However, they have *no* problems with cruises. The motion really isn’t noticeable to them and they are very sensitive to it. So, I don’t think that Mrs. A-House or midori7 would have a problem.
I did the 7-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise with my parents and my sister’s family and it was awesome. My wife had an easy time taking care of Faith because Faith was just 2 months old and we didn’t have to worry about bringing food for her.
Go Warriors!
Just Win Babeeeee!
A-House,
Estelle took one of those motion sickness pills in Maui when we went whale watching.. knocked her out for the day. Next day.. she decided to forgo the pills and she was fine for the 2 hour cruise…
The WAC *already* contacted both UNLV and SDSU a month or so ago, that was reported by multiple newspapers and TV stations. However, UNLV and SDSU would earn about $3 million less, pay more to travel, and lose the chance to be a part of an AQ conference. Why would ANY school go from the MWC to the WAC? If UH was part of the MWC would UH move to the WAC?
The MWC has *no* exit fee. But their teams have no reason to leave for any non-AQ conference.
I asked about what would happen to other UH sports if football goes independent as I think Notre Dame basketball is part of a conference.. I think.
Anyway, Garret pretty much said what I thought would happen if UH football loses their mind and thinks it can survive independently.
Independence is NOT and never was an option.
Here is a very simple summary of the rules to become an AQ conference. Here is the part about the bonus that a 9-team conference gets.
Kazz,
I think that those talking about UH going independent are only thinking about football. I agree with you that it would not be an option for UH Athletics…I was pretty sure we were thinking the same think on this issue.
The MWC reminds me of that knight in black armour in the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”.
They kept cutting off the knight’s limbs and he exclaimed “tis only a flesh wound”. In the end when he was a stump with a torso with a head, then he admitted defeat.
Basically, the MWC would ONLY join forces with the WAC if they were really REALLY left with nothing.
Mr. bb.
If the USC game was cancelled then the UH Warrior record would be 5-7.
Good lord?
The MINIMUM to have an advertisement banner on campus in one of UH’s ahtletic venues is $10,000.00???????
So basically the future of UH as a division one program is dependent on winning football games the next few years? I’m a little skeptical, we can all hope for the best but it really is out of our control. That’s an awful lot of faith to be putting into the football team. Say the football team has a couple of consecutive losing seasons, then what. We could see a run of three years like the Von Appen era, I cringe at the very thought! Will the situation be so dire that we are forced to drop football all together? John Burns must be rolling over in his grave at what has been happening.
Ok, so the biggest threat to the WAC seems to have subsided for now.
Do I personally believe them (MWC)?
Nope.
WAC needs to smell blood and go for it.
If you look at the BCS criteria (link provided), the MWC is at something like 90% for criteria #3 (number of ranked teams) when they just have to be 50% or higher.
For criteria #1, they went up (and the WAC went down) by taking BSU even after they lost Utah:
3. The conference must accumulate a score of at least 50 percent of the highest ranking conference’s score in the Adjusted Top-25 Performance Ranking, which measures how many teams each conference placed in the BCS top 25 and adjusts for conference size.
Jeff,
I see what you are saying, at the same time, with the right moves (in A LOT of areas), the football team can be the driving force to raise UH athletics as a whole and I don’t mean philosophically, but it wasn’t that long ago that the football program drove the state nuts!!!
I believe in Jim Donovan. If the need arises to “pull the plug” I believe for that cause, should UH football fall that far down, that there will be financial assistance to UH athletics to “handle” the situation.
Jim Donovan did what he had to do for UH men’s basketball. I believe he can do it again for UH football, if the need should arise.
Not sure why the Star Advertiser hasn’t set up a blog webpage yet, but here is the direct address to ST’s blog that is still on the Advertiser site.

Hi d1!!
Hi duffer!! You got to meet Charlie…you lucky dude!! About the golf, don’t make me choke…I couldn’t hit a golf ball to save my life. So you are all safe as being kings of the golf world when I am around!! Hahahaha!!
At least I can still cheer against those stupid Trojans….
MWC is stuck with BYU and TCU, for different reasons….TCU although having improved in fb still does not bring anything else to the table to be attractive, that’s why the big12 stuck with Baylor. BYU has a consistant fb program, etc. but being a religious school makes them less desireable….that’s why pac10 selected Utah, although Utah still recruits heavily mormon prospects, and leans toward mormonism.
Kazz,
I believe the MWC that they will not expand until they get AQ status because they really need that 25% bonus to help them qualify. Without that 25% bonus, their bottom teams would kill their conference average and they wouldn’t be close for an appeal for AQ status.
Put it this way, the MWC could add Alabama or Texas and it would *hurt* their conference average…they are #7 right now and are pretty close to getting to #6. If their average puts them at #6, they would automatically get AQ status. They cannot add more teams because they need that 25% bonus, so they need their bottom half to win more nonconference games.
UH can hurt the MWC by beating BSU and UNLV. It would have hurt the MWC if UH could have beaten UNLV last season, but at least this year the game is at Aloha Stadium.
Oh no– cruise ships pitch and roll, bop and weave like a cork. Remember, A-House — you and I going to suffer this when we dare the 21 day Far East cruise… 😐 Maybe we’ll bring Pride. and Bulla too. 👿
Superb! Typically I by no means examine whole articles but the way you wrote this data is merely amazing and this kept my interest in reading through and I enjoyed it. You’ve got obtained great composing knowledge.
i like the idea of the Wac getting Gonzaga or similar to join the conference as a non football playing school. i don’t know how they would split the pie though. i think the WAC could survive with 8 teams. i really don’t like Cal-Davis or the other teams mentioned with their small stadiums and under 10,000 attendance. how can they compete with limited attendance and an already tight or declining budget?
Okay gang…quick reminder before I have to leave again…
Once again, it is time to announce an event of epic proportions…Okay, well, maybe not that epic…but going be big…well, I guess all Tsaiko events are big…anyway….

Oh…and Happy Birthday to SJ…!!!!!
While things have calmed down some, what do you guys think about asking the NCAA to allow an exempt (13th) game every year for All the schools that are in the same conference as UH, not only the ones UH plays?
Oh oh, if the SA blogs are on a rotation basis, looks like we won’t through make it again tonight.
Oooops make it through again tonight
Gonzaga has a *much* better situation right now. The WCC institutions are similar in philosophy (primarily private Catholic Universities) that have a much better basketball conference than the WAC. They make more money from the NCAA tournament than the WAC since their teams have gone far in the tournament. Their travel costs are much lower due to not having to go to places like Ruston and Honolulu.
Why would Gonzaga switch to the WAC? Less money, more travel, RPI hit from the lesser basketball competition, less compatible Universities. Do *not* forget that the Universities are linked by more than just sports. When I went to a Jesuit retreat (the annual one where they invite selected lay people to participate in their huge gathering), our Santa Clara contingent spent a lot of time with faculty from Pepperdine, San Diego, etc.
Anyway, I should stop being such a downer. My vacation is about to start and I’m not even going to have a computer for 4 days so I will stop being so negative now.
surfdog, if the conference members in the WAC play Hawaii, which they should be doing, don’t they automatically get the 13th game?
Athlon Sports has UH as the #94th ranked team…right behind Utah State.
Garret, have a great vacation. i thought you were off blog from Wednesday? relax and then come out firing. aloha.
Kazz,
I appreciate your comments. I like Donanvan as well he seems to be able to make the tough decisions when it comes to firing coaches. From all accounts it even looked like Trap would have been shown the door if he didn’t win the WAC this season.
It’s just scary at how much of this is beyond our control. We can donate our money and time, lobby legislators to support UH etc. BUT we have no control over how a bunch of 18-22 year old kids perform on the football field. It’s crazy to think that the future of UH athletics is dependent on 18-22 year old kids!! I also admit I’m a little jealous at programs like Wyoming and SDSU, which by virtue of geography and being in the right place at the right time could very well end up in an AQ conference despite NOT winning on the field. Remember if UH has travel subsidies in place back in 1996 Hawaii could very well have been in the MWC today and we wouldn’t have all these problems.
As for Coach Mack, any decision on his future is likely going to have to come from Chancellor Hinshaw, remember she was one responsible for hiring him, not JD. For now he seems to have the backing of the Chancellor, like you said that could change depending on wins and losses in the future.
watched JD on Leahey and Leahey last night. he was very positive. he said the WAC are meeting behind closed doors and are looking into all kinds of different situations, but wouldn’t leak anything.:(
Ah, Garret:
I had a little cringe when you mentioned UH’s loss to UNLV last year. It was so winnable and yet……………
Coach Mack, I’m sure learned from that experience and perhaps it is showing by asking Greg Salas to work as a DB for selected situations ( now the coaches must work in concert to put him in at the right time ) and recruiting “taller” DBs and corners. Salas must also recognize the situation(s) where he may be called to jump in at DB. Also, hope that Miano has several alignments to allow double coverage for the taller receivers and in situations that hurt UH during the UNLV game. Key, I beleive will be the “corners” knowing when to let go of the reciver and having the safeties cover the taller ones. This may occur several times in a game and the coaches must be Johny on the spot to recognize it!
Dline must also be aware of game time situations and their task of getting to the QB. Coaches make the defensive calls, but the players themselves must discuss field happenings. Hope some one is willing to accept this additional responsibility. This is, IMHO, a sign of a good defensive coach in the making!
Recruiting taller receivers will also help the DBs to work on and recognize situations when the offense will attempt to put the taller receivers on the shorter DBs.
Of course, all this may be unnecessary if all corners and safeties were ove 6′ tall with 4.3 speed. What, can dream can’t I?
Eh, wut you tink? Big 10 get 12 teams, Big 12 get 10 teams. No wonder da kids get hard time with da math. No matter what da big boyz do, I say UNLV and SD State going end up in da same conference like UH.
Mr. (Jesse)James.
What date is the Blog Bash 4? Can’t save the date if there is none.
A little birdie told me that there is no way on earth that the fresneck would be invited to join the MWC period and double period. Me thinks this birdie knows what he/she is talking about.
I think (J)J said August 7th, but dang he didn’t say what year.
papajoe2:
Jim D, judging from his “body motions” knows a lot more that we may give him credit for and watching his facial expressions, I believe there will be a lot of positive happenings for UH sports.
also, liked his statement of “adding” locker rooms for the WSBS in the future; let’s hope not to long in the future. Wonder how much it would cost to “add” locker rooms including bathrooms for UH and the visiting team? Can also add seats above each locker room expanding capacity to over 3,000. Someone mentioned that by next season there should be roofs all the way around. Someday, when there is a lot more $$$, the aluminum bench seats can be converted to “theater style” seats like The Les.
Dang, I must make a stronger effort in winning Mega Bucks – hope its over $30 million when I hit it!!!
A-House,
I’m subject to motion sickness as well. But my better half likes the idea of crusing. So sometime in the next few years, we’ll probably try the Alaska inland passage. I have plenty of time to stock up on patches, dramamine, ling hing mui, rabbit’s foot, etc. 🙂
Garret,
Thanks for all the info and insight on conference realignment…bery interesting! Looks like we have some time to make things happen.
Garret and Family:
Have a great vacation (cruise)!!!
End of the first half it will be UH 28 USC 3 end of the game it will be UH 42 USC 17 end of story.
Curt:
Maybe we will end up on the same cruise and we can both hang over and feed the fishes!
Eh, braddah Pomai, I like your forecast! YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Kazz,
“We’ll call it a draw.
I’ll bite your legs off!”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhRUe-gz690
Bon Voyage, Garret and family!
Eh Doc you know what is in the works for the RWSS, I know the roof is but isn’t there more too? In talking to Coach Coolen he is embarrassed to take recruit’s into the womens locker room, so they don’t, says they walk past it an he points to the door an says there the locker room, an moves on down the line. What a shame…..
Kazz, Ralph and I all saw this last season, girls where up to bat one had to go pee so she ran to the bathrooms and stood in line with the rest of the women, now that’s bad.
A-House,
Feed the fishes? Like the humpbacks and killer whales? 🙂
A-House, Curt, no worry about sea sickness. now days ships have computerized stabilizers. i went on a cruise where the water from the waves splashed up on the 5th floor windows. made my dancing moves look more cool. was no problem NOT getting sick. enjoy!
PS. you can use the room service for your wake up call. they knock on your door with your breakfast. then you can eat and do your business then go out. you can purchase computer time on the ships for the blog, but it is slow slow (satellite?) you probably only can blog once.
ST – What’s the latest on the troubled Oregon kid, Masoli transferring to U.H.? The last time that happened, the troubled kid took us all the way to the Sugar Bowl.
Curt:
I was tinking more small papio, baby turtles, small mahi mahi, ono, etc.
We could both jump in and be but a snack to the whales!!!
Seawalker:
I thought NAMU or USU was interested in Masoli. He would have only 1 year left to play as 2010 will be his redshirt year.
I don’t think it would be a good fit for UH with all the underclassment QBs in their stable and another coming in with the 2010 recruits.
Butm what do I know?
Okay, so according to Garret’s information the WAC is a “0”. Hmmmm… and we’re rated 94th behind Utah State. Hmmmm……
I don’t know about you, but we are where we belong and if it does not work out, we determined our own fate. BSU did not arrive as everyone’s desired date, they work at it, spent for it, had a strategy, stuck to it and got to where they are.
Really now, why all the teeth gnashing. The sooner we accept the facts and determine the direction the better off we’ll be. So what if we decide to go D II. Yes it’s not where the big boys play, but maybe we’ll get more local boys to play (those who don’t get the D-1 call). And maybe we can get to be the best D-II quicker than being mired as the 94th or worse D-I operation.
Just got to look at what’s staring at us.
Happy Birthday SJ!
papajoe2:
5th floor windows, eh. u sure da boat was not sinking?
j/k!!
Green Zone was an great film, watched it at the theatre and will be adding to my collection at home.I would say its not your standard war flick and matt damon and jason issacs are very good in it .There is some suprising humorous bits in to, in my opinion matt damon is far better in this than any of the bourne films.
I don’t see Masoli as a Hawaii prospect.. to little time to learn the ropes. He’s had too many strikes against him. Doesn’t sound like his teammates are losing any sleep at losing him, either.
We need Defensive ends that can penetrate more than we need QB’s I think.
Masoli was supposed to come to UH in 2008.
He played at City College of San Francisco, where Nick Rolovich was the quarterbacks coach.
He would have been able to transfer after his freshman year. But UH decided that out of loyalty to CCSF coach George Rush, it wouldn’t recruit him until a year later.
Well … Oregon jumped in, and offered him a scholie.
Oh, how things might have been different.
mih, i think we also need O linemen. and taller dbs. and a big running back. USC? juniors and seniors there are free agents.
Greg Salas and Kanani Danielson are the cover subjects for the new Koa Anuenue magazine that is being published. It only will be available to AKA members.
Hey Marion –
Got a link for you too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mNB_VG_shc&NR=1
The trouble with Masoli is that after the first incident, he gets into trouble again soon after.
CB is a different story – one strike and no trouble since. Even at that, the first incident was somewhat questionable making what really was a minor misdemeanor into a major felony.
papajoe2 ~ So you wuz makin’ taxi dan-sah on da boat! You pretty smooth braddah!
Tell me da troot…you not tryin’ fo raid USC players are you?
Pomai,
It was discouraging to see the players standing in line with the rest of the fans for the restroom. Heck, not just the Wahine, but the visiting team’s players as well.
But just like you said, a little ‘aloha’ from the people to let the players through the front of the line would be nice.
Player bathrooms would be nicer.
if BYU and TCU leave/get raided from the MWC and we hook up with the MWC we basically have the same mid-major level conference and Boise is back at where they started. haha. that would be kind of funny.
Happy Birthday sj-macro!
SWEET!!!
“The faces of the fall.”
j/j
You got mail. Good news!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SJ!!!
Howzit Everybody,
Happy Birthday sj-macro
Heu Curt and Mr-A House,
I hear Ginger is good and so is the patch.
papajoe2,
Hmmmm?, WAC in a closed door meeting, and JD with the look of knowing more than he would be willing to devulge????….it won’t surprise me if they come out saying that they are going to stay put where they are with eight teams in the WAC for now.
Papajoe2 you are correct.
However, I was hoping to we could be proactive in anticipation of further expansions to 12 or 16 teams.
For example, in a 12 team conference where teams play 8 in-conference and 4 out-of-conference games, a conference wide 13 game exemption would mean 4 extra games for the conference….maybe and additional $4M to $6M?
In a 16 team conference with 2 divisions, it could mean 8 extra games…..$8M to $12M.
Stephen, what u tink?
Superb web site. It absolutely was pleasant to me.
Papajoe2 and Jeff,
It’s all insane. For one, I am somewhat glad that the MWC is relaxing a bit because that means we’re poach-free for the most part. For 3-5 years as the MWC says, I dunno about that though.
As Jeff mentioned, all we can do as fans is to put our support, emotions, time, and money into UH athletics because it is a CHOICE and even that is the most we can do in this situation.
We’re stuck in that sense, but I’d rather be stuck in that place than the guy sitting and typing away frothing at the mouth and not even supporting UH and still complaining.
Ah Montana!!! Lose money!!! No even play softball!!! Get women’s vball though! 😛
Montana State has softball though! 😉
kekoa, its legal to raid USC’s juniors and seniors per NCAA since USC got into trouble. so far the only one i know of is a back up USC O lineman transferring to Boise State
so no more Holy War?
Kazz, MWC? i know we both don’t really trust them as that’s the guys wen dig out from the WAC. last week Monday they said they won’t expand. Thursday, they ivited Boise State. i wouldn’t let them watch my wallet while i go swimming.
Papajoe ~ just pulling your leg. I know of one very good Tsaiko son we could use on our Oline. Like da beast, he was overlooked. Now, he has too much to lose if he walks.
Curt, A-house, ginger is also good with mochi crunch to go with the free popcorn they give you to watch the movies on the ship. you gotta bring your own mochi crunch and ginger, so might as well bring some since it serves dual purposes. hahaha
I have to admit you hit the nail on the head with that one. Good Point! If You Want to Watch The Africa World Cup 2010 Online Visit -> http://www.africaworldcup.tv
Kekoa, what? the lineman no miss laulau?, kalua pig?, poke?, poi?, beach? beautiful local women? plenty playing time? wow! with all this, i might get back into playing shape and walk on. oh wait, i already live here in paradise.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Blog
It is now time for us to step up once again. Just received final cost of this years bracelet’s. I need to raise $2645.83, that comes to 115.03 per bracelet, this year instead of WAC Champion on the bracelet they want “Na Wahine – WCWS with the name of the player an their jersey # inside. So I am asking all of you to get out your check books an sharpen your pens. Please make all Check out to:
“UH FOUNDATION” it is important that you write in the memo part of the check “Wahine Softball Bracelets” by doing so the money can only be spent for the purchase of the bracelets. All funds donated will be tax deductible and you will will receive that in the mail from the Foundation.
Now by my calculations that means if we can get 132 people to donate it would only cost each one 20.00 but not to worry you can donate as much as you like, any left over funds will be kept in the account to purchase more bracelet’s next year when they go all the way an win the whole dang thing and come home as NC’s.

Definitely.
Have a great time at tomorrow’s Tsukuji cc!!!
Drooling just thinking of the onolicious food. YUM!
pomai,
how come they don’t want to put the year. like – Na Wahine – WCWS 2010?
Kazz . . .
“The faces of the fall.”
Did you mean “The faces of Fall”?
Surely, you did not mean to imply these two fine athletes are going to be the faces of the decline!
That is it! No more Skittles for you!!! HA!
Haka don’t know didn’t ask, actually coach didn’t say anything, he looked at coach Dee en said well what do you guys want, I’m not wear the thing, then he laughed. Apparently they (girls) had already decided on what the wanted.
ok thanks
Thanks (almost belated)fellow Tsaikos for the Birthday wishes. 😎
OK Pomai, I’m in!
On a side note, in talking to coach coolen he like’s his chance’s for the coming season even losing Grimes, Yoshikawa,Pu‘u-Warren and Tauali‘i. He really likes this incoming left handed catcher, says she will fit in perfect, good hands, good at bat an can think an call a good game. It’s going to be fun living up to this years team. Crap can you see KJam breaking her own record, then watch the stink talk, love it. LOL Also coach really likes the long ball, say live by it die by it.
We had a nice talk an one thing he brought up was he liked coaching these girls because they are play their pro career right now this is it, nothing after. I forget the name of the girl he mentioned but she went pro in Europe somewhere an is just barely making it by, sure is getting rich.
ALL ABOARD!!!
Hey very nice webpage!!! Man .. Gorgeous .. Incredible .. I will bookmark your weblog and take the feeds also…
Wafan,
You know what I meant! 😉
To add to Pomai’s softball bracelet announcement,
There is a little bit of a “deadline” this time. Mid August-ish to collect the total needed.
It’s to coincide with a few things. 😎
Garret,
Without Title IX, you also wouldn’t see a lot of sports and UH fans might as well ERASE some past memories of wonderful moments in UH athletics history.
like a public presentation at a public event of a uh function perhaps? 🙂
Also I hope no one minds but I will bump up the notice for the bracelets if the comments get long, some guys fly through an might miss it.
[…] writes that UH will no longer print any media guides. UH is joining the growing number of schools that will no longer print media guides for wide […]
Heya¡my very first comment on your site. ,I have been reading your blog for a while and thought I would completely pop in and drop a friendly note. . It is great stuff indeed. I also wanted to ask..is there a way to subscribe to your site via email?
Please mail all checks to
Na Wahine Bracelet Fund

Pomai,
Thanks for getting the bracelet purchase going! I’m in.
Duffer,
Thought nothing of it. What makes this blog so great is that we can argue, debate,
and disagree with one another; at the end, we are still all friends.
jm$&(! started this? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi Ike! Hi Duffer!
Pomai – can we donate online too?
Lakers are “CHAMPIONS” as MAN had me on pins and needles through out the night !
Celebration is ON as 16 NBA World Championship Banner is in the books !
What a 7th game FINAL as Boston gave us everything and more as we go
back to back !
Parade down Figueroa is going to be in the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS !
RainbowCliff,
Talked to ST and your book is on its way. I didn’t talk to ST last week because
first week at Star-Advertiser. Time adjustment. Also needed to give ST time to
decorate his new man-pad with floral arrangements and hanging origami. HaHa.
jm2375,
Since the UH Foundation is handling the funds, I would think that you could donate online. You might just want to let Pomai know if he is tracking the total. There’s a comment box on the page where you can specify your donation target.
https://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/give/giving-gift.aspx
where is it?
LOL ~ (J)J is not a reporter… he forgot the Where…

Pomai:
Mahalo for all your hard work on the bracelets!
j/j
did you get that email?
Happy Birthday SJ! See you at the Sushi Cattle Call. (Maybe we can put you in da oven). May as well start the tradition. Myki?…are you in?
Pomai…It’s all good. Let’s do this bracelet thing again! They really deserve everything we can get for them.
The July issue of National Defense Magazine has an article about a project that a certain Tsaiko has been working on lately…this is a decent explanation of one of the projects I’ve been working on.
Congratulations Garret!
And thanks for what you are doing for the troops…
jm2375 I am not sure if the page that slugger was talking about would have the restrictive funds on it. That is why I wanted to have all checks made out to the UH Foundation with the note in the memo area, once you put the note “Na Wahine bracelets” in the memo it becomes what the call restrictive funds and it can not be used for anything other than bracelets, even Coach Coolen couldn’t spend the money for anything else than that. But if you want to try go ahead.
Pomai & jm2375,
Amanda clarified that point about restricting the funds for a specific purpose by declaring the intent of your online donation in the Special Instructions field. You’d select UHM-Athletics for Programs, UHM Womens Softball for Accounts. In the Special Instructions box, specify Wahine Softball Bracelets, and that will restrict the funds for that purpose.
On a check, the instructions provided by Pomai accomplishes the same thing.
Just be sure you select the UHM Athletics program, because UHH = UH-Hilo.
For softball bracelet donations, I’d send Pomai an email about what you donated online so he can track the total donations. Getting updated information from the UH Foundation may not be as fast as we’d like. They don’t use sub-accounts in their database, and someone at the Foundation would have to write a Crystal report to pull data from their database.
I would prefer to have everyone send checks to the address I put up rather than anything else, it just would make it easier to know exactly how much we have, because like Kazz said earlier we want to get this done by mid-August(funds collected) and turned into UH Foundation, I also learned that Jennie Lee actually did the work in purchasing the bracelets after securing the funds from the foundation. Hopefully it will move faster this time after doing it once before.
Garret ~ Good job! I’m hoping our recent entry in the VA New Technology competition will come out winners.
Thanks for focusing your energy on helping my fellow Veterans.
HAUOLI LAHANAU SJ!!! You and Myki are two very wonderful folks. Da bestest!
The Salt Lake Tribune’s sources say that Fresno State and Nevada are first in line for MWC invitations once they decide to expand again.
Hey Pomai I already used my credit card at the UH website. I specified for softball bracelets.
Was this guy the lookout outside the Mens’ Room?
Problem with UH website is identity, Pomai won’t know the names of some of the contributors to the bracelet fund and therefore he would have a difficult time reconciling the donations. When the Foundation informs him the amount in the bracelet account, he won’t know who paid from his committed list and he won’t know if he got the up to date total before closing the account once the bracelets are paid for. Money earmarked for bracelet can be used for bracelet only, so the running total must be current and that is hard to keep track of. Send in checks or cashier’s check if you don’t want your name revealed.
D1 he was in one of the stalls, he was so full of it at the time, he just sat there taking it all in.
Ralph,
You cool, man! 😆
i was cooler eating my shave ice
Pomai:
Provided that of the general obligation bond fund appropriation for the University of Hawaii, systemwide support (UOH 900), the sum of $62,285,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2010-2011, shall be used for capital renewal and deferred maintenance projects; provided that:
(1) $520,000 for a new gymnasium to replace Klum gym at the University of Hawaii at Manoa;
(2) $1,700,000 for improvements to the softball stadium, including installation of new field lighting system, roofs over the first and third base bleacher stands, and locker rooms; and
(3) $2,000,000 for a four-sided scoreboard and video display system, all auxiliary, shot clock, and locker room clock at Stan Sheriff Center.”
It is my understanding that private sector funds will be available sometime within the next 18 months as will additional public funding for softball stadium improvements. Although this is more than just speculation, it is not yet in the bank, but I think the signs are good.
They’re doing a makeover on the blogs, which enable easier access to them.
It might debut tonight, or early Friday.
I think UH should let it be known that they will offer travel subsidies for the non-revenue sports as part of any application to a new conference.
After all, UH does get a break with the exempted game.
Lots of people can’t find the blog, too many of us got to go the old route with the Advertiser Warrior beat to log on.
some of our sports can generate some income to help cover travel cost, teams like softball and soccer. And hopefully the mbb, wbb, baseball and the anchor, fb can increase their revenue by a substantial amount.
Count us in, Pomai – two donations since we’re spoosies not siameesers
Red Zone just send me an email with the amount for the running total. Pomai at tsai-kos.com
Ralph also I just found out that they don’t give out any info about who donated or how much.
Thanks for the info Doc, so they have no time table for when the work will be done? And they really don’t have the money yet either?
Belated Happy Birfday, sjmacro!!
Good Aloha Friday to everyone!
Three more wake ups, then . . .
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!
Odd some of the old WACy schools would look at reconstituting the original old WACy conference. That is just plain old WACd.

yeah what the heck was that call? The refs should have called a holding penalty.
HELP ACKNOWLEDGE THE 2010 RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL TEAM!!!
In 2007 the reality of “extra” funding for UH’s non-revenue sports programs was evident. As the 2007 UH Football team was able to afford WAC Championship/Sugar Bowl rings, the 2007 WAC champion and Super Regional team had no money for anything for the players to acknowledge their achievements. However, as a result of the “aloha” of many fans, that team was able to have something to keep for themselves to remember their experience by.
In the year 2010, that very same program took UH softball to new heights and gave us many memories. It is time for fans to respond again, if they are able to.
This is a drive to raise funds for the 2010 Wahine Softball team’s bracelets acknowledging their Women’s College World Series appearance.
The total cost will be $2645.83, that comes to 115.03 per bracelet which falls well within the NCAA regulated “gift” amount to each player set at a maximum of $300.00 per student athlete.
The timeline goal needed to raise the total amount is set for mid-August 2010.
Please make all checks or money orders out to:
“UH FOUNDATION” it is important that you write in the memo part of the check “Wahine Softball Bracelets” by doing so the money can only be spent for the purchase of the bracelets. All funds donated will be tax deductible and you will will receive that in the mail from the Foundation.
Please mail all checks to:
Na Wahine Bracelet Fund
3633 Puuku Mauka Dr.
Honolulu HI 96818
***PLEASE MAKE SURE THE NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER OF YOUR CHECKS ARE CURRENT AND CORRECT. UH FOUNDATION USES THIS INFO TO SEND PEOPLE THEIR RECEIPTS FOR TAX DEDUCTIONS.***
In working directly with UH administrators and the UH foundation, this year’s process will be smoother and the team will be able to receive their bracelets in a timely fashion.
If you have any questions please ask or email Pomai at pomai@tsai-kos.com.
MAHALO TO ALL OF THOSE THAT ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE.
New post is up.
Click on Stephen Tsai’s name at the top of the blog.
Oppps! Sorry – Wrong person, Kazz, vice Pomai,. RE: Wahine donation.
A PROACTIVE PLAN:
Being that the Non AQ leagues lower half usually being at the mercy of the upper half, why not the lower halves band together and create a league that may not be too beneficial today but could become in the future. In so doing creating stabability and peace of mind for these schools and allowing them to build a prominent league one day.
Example: The lower halves of the MWC and the remaining WAC.
Two divisions created. Western and Eastern. The western division comprising of Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State, San Jose. The eastern division comprising of Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Utah State, Idaho. Since the formation of the MWC, schools like Wyoming, New Mexico Colorado State, UNLV and San Diego State has not faired any better in my opinion.
These universities may have a lot of common dnominators to them which could be a driving force so they could create their own destiny and not be at the mercy of their upper halves. For La Tech they should go to a league closer to their geographic area.
One may say Hawaii out in the middle of the Pacific in not in any school’s geographic area. So true but with proper planning, marketing and travel subsidies these schools may have another tool to land recruits. It won’t happen overnight but if these schools share common concerns they could travel on their own ship headed for a destination knowing that life boats will never have to be considered due to the stucture of their vessel and the unity that can be created.
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
This site is a walk-through for all the information you wanted about this and didn’t know who to ask. Look here, and you’ll definitely find it.
