UH remains as finalist for USC QB

USC quarterback Max Wittek, who is seeking to transfer, said Hawaii is “absolutely” one of his finalists.

Wittek has visited Texas and UH. He acknowledged Louisville also is a consideration.

Wittek said he has not set a deadline. He is free to transfer, without having to redshirt, after he earns a bachelor’s degree in May. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Wittek said one of UH’s attractions is the opportunity to work with head coach Norm Chow, who doubles as offensive coordinator.

“Coach Chow is awesome,” Wittek said. “His (football) pedigree speaks for itself.”

    π

Hmmm, the use of the word pedigree reminds me of family lineage or dog food. I don’t really see the Chow’s as a generational football coaching and playing family. Just my thoughts, no need make a big deal out of it. TGIF and once again, 3.14

Good morning Tsaikos! Happy Pi Day from da clueless wahine statistician.

Tough losses last night for BasketBows and SoftBows.
    We get ‘um today!

    GO WAHINE! x2!
    GO WARRIORS!

  6. Haleakala March 14, 2014 7:37 am

Max, come on over. Hawaii and the Warriors will welcome you.

  7. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 7:39 am

I’m not sure I understand “Pi Day,” although I think photos of pies with the pi symbol are kind of cool.

  8. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 7:41 am

OK, now I get it: 3.14
    I’ve failed the public-school system.

  9. Bryson March 14, 2014 7:51 am

I heard Hawaii may be adding another RB…

Didn’t they show “Life of Pi” on those Vacations Hawaii flights for half of 2013?

  12. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:07 am

I think the only good thing about algebra is pi, and the only good thing about pi is it helps you evenly cut up a pizza pie five ways.

Seems like we’ve been talking about Wittek forever!! By the time May comes, it will be forever!! Would be good to have him on our roster but I still think its Graham if he heals up like expected.

  15. Former UH Athlete March 14, 2014 8:17 am

How many players named Max have played for Hawaii?

  18. RainbowCliff March 14, 2014 8:18 am

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, tough lost for the bows as the season came to a bitter end. Hopefully Arnold can get an athletic big in which he surely needs to WIN in this conference. Northridge will have two next season that are redshirting and they are the “real deal”.

Playing catch up in a big game seems to be a tendency that Arnold’s teams has shown over the years as being eliminated first round three straight tournaments is another disappointing exit. Hopefully the wahines can win today against Cal Poly that will put them in the championship game on Saturday. Will be there at the pyramid IF the girls make it as the old saying goes “it takes a women to do a man job” !

Go Lady Wahines, all the way to the DANCE !

  19. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:18 am

In volleyball, there was Max Wechsung …

  20. NorthShoreFan March 14, 2014 8:20 am

  21. Former UH Athlete March 14, 2014 8:21 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Coach Chow has the rep – at least Mr. Wittek believes in him. I hope the Chow mystic/magic will work on the QBs already in the fold!

  26. RainbowCliff March 14, 2014 8:33 am

    #20: NorthShoreFan , ABSOLUTELY !

Lady wahines are on a mission as they know how to WIN close games rising in pressure situations and staying “TOGETHER” as a team. Big concern is Jackson as I hope she has something left in the tank. Going to need her IF they get by Cal Poly as Northridge girls are loaded and confident that they will win the tournament. From the balck eye peas “I have a feeling that tonight is going to be a good time”

    Let’s go lady wahines !

  27. Former UH Athlete March 14, 2014 8:35 am

Looking at yesterday’s video of Tuinei, just wish he was a little bigger, then he’d be the perfect LB. Good instincts, he’s quick to read run/pass. Plays faster than his 40y time would suggest.

He’s kind of a tweener player. Could be a hard hitting SS or nickel/rover in certain defensive packages. If you can find old footage of Steve Gleason (Wash St & New Orleans Saints), Tuinei has a similar style, but Gleason was a madman and threw all caution to the wind… which is how he had a good NFL career in spite of his size and going undrafted. Sadly his style of play is also part of why he’s suffering so badly from ALS.

Gonna be an anxious few months to await Wittek’s decision, as every little rumor and murmur will be posted in all the circles of information. Hey maybe another application for pi?

  28. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:35 am

UH had two Manlys — Manly Kanoa III and Manly Williams.
Oh, the stories I could share about a certain basketball game involving Punahou (Rob Durand, Shane Takeshita) and Saint Louis (Manly Williams and future Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona).

  29. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:39 am

Why does McDonald’s call it an apple “pie”? Isn’t it more of a turnover?

  30. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:40 am

Speaking of apples, I remember when UH used to woo the head of the NIT selection committee. It apparently helped. UH used to get a lot of home NIT games.

  31. RainbowCliff March 14, 2014 8:40 am

Well good folks of Tsaiko Nation, beautiful day here in LA and I am out to enjoy it. Peace, Joy and Happiness to all of you. Will see you at the end of the RAINBOW !

  32. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2014 8:41 am

I think schmoozing is a dying art. UH officials need to work on that. Post-midnight tweets are not schmoozing. Everybody needs to feel you’re their best friend.

    #69 IYF,

Gib is doing a better job of recruiting. Guys like Nevels, Shamburger, and Smith played key roles this year. The two guys on the bench will contribute greatly if they live up to their hype and one of the incoming players (Fleming). Supposed to be good too.

Next seasons success depends on team chemistry and if Issac Fotu returns. Gib has another year of HC experience under his belt and will learn from his mistakes. Not saying it’ll be another 20 win season but I feel more confident in a winning basketball program than a winning football program.

  81. jimmy the lock March 14, 2014 9:29 am

pi-rate joke: aye matey, what do you get when you slice a jack-o-lantern by it’s diameter? Pumpkin pi…arrrrrrrr

  82. jimmy the lock March 14, 2014 9:32 am

My take on why men’s bb lost, the other team stepped up and made the big shots. Hats off to CSUN.

  83. Stretch March 14, 2014 9:32 am

I think Gib should upgrade his schedule by playing better teams to get the team ready for the Big West. BUT, he has no reason to do that, he gets an auto rollover with 20 wins.

  84. Hilo-Warrior March 14, 2014 9:36 am

Should make it 20 wins and throw in a minimum sos so he can’t just milk the earnings.

Is there a Mormon connection – as in Gib or Akana?

How will the 2 6’9″ red shirts fit in next year?

How many current players are not on scholarship?

Will Gib release players not on scholarship if a “better” player shows up?

  91. jeezy33 March 14, 2014 9:46 am

    80. Don’t mistake good recruiting with bringing in household names…. The guards you mentioned are upgrades but it still seems like a step below lot of the better Big West guys. I don’t see the fit in which Gib recruits to…

You have a dominate post player like Fotu, you need shooters. Nevels is the only shooter he had. You also need a big that can alter shots in the middle. I don’t want to name names but we have recruited a bunch of guys that just dont fit what I think Gib is trying to accomplish.

I thought last night’s game was winnable. Have to agree with Michael Cage (announcer) as he wondered aloud why was the guard holding onto the ball for so long and Stanhardinger (Sp?) who was hot from the field and line did not get many touches down the stretch.

“Milking the clock” is like prevent defense in football. You lose momentum and you cannot or find it almost impossible to get what got you there back. If they could have won as big as the first upset (31 points) they should have done it. Taking their foot off the gas probably hurt.

I went to Yamato American High School near Yokota Air Force Base; played football in the local military high school league (Kanto Plains Secondary Schools Athletic Assoc-KPSSAA) which sent Paul LEE (former UH DL starter to Roosevelt & UH), Ron CODER (Japan-Penn State & NFL Seahawks DL), Dan AUDICK (Japan-Colorado-UH OL-NFL 49ers),etc….After UH & ROTC, stationed at Camp Zama & coached Varsity & JV football in the KPSSAA. Have you seen or heard of any D-1 prospects in the KPSSA now that might be interested in the UH. Kids are tough, traveled around the world & can pass the SAT & ACT.

jeezy33…thanks for reiterating what i’ve been trying to point out to all the “expert analysts/coaches” here. this team was/is a definite upgrade in talent from the previous regime but still falls short of what it takes to put enough talent on the court.

in every sport there are different levels of talent.

in a five player sport every position is critically challenged on every play.

  119. Da Punchbowl Kid March 14, 2014 12:15 pm

    Howzeet Gangeez! 😉

Stephen – I recall you saying that Wittek wants to follow the spring practices of the schools he’s interested in, to evaluate their prospective QB situations. If so, does he plan to attend any of those practices, including UH?

In any case, we are looking nice and deep at QB, with or without Wittek.

  120. Da Punchbowl Kid March 14, 2014 12:17 pm

Tough loss for the BasketBow men last night… so close, and yet so far.

As far as this Pi day stuff, it’s all “Greek” to me. 😆

  121. andbacktoreality March 14, 2014 12:23 pm

No surprise. The team is the most overrated 20 win team in history close to the most overatted football team our sugar bowl team. neither played anyone good, both had similar results when actually tested.

This was the 4th best team in the Big West. I had zero expectations we would win this. Why did everyone else> We have good forward play, but they cant jump for anything, and our guards really cant shoot to save their lives…

  122. jacklegpreacher March 14, 2014 12:25 pm

yea ST the spearman fb scholarship thing would present a problem-risking one on him.

anybody else think fatigue is a factor in all of the UHMBB late game losses? could extra conditioning help, at the end of practices?

  123. NorthShoreFan March 14, 2014 12:52 pm

say it isn’t so .. but ..healing energy to Rev Dennis K….KTUH program mentioned he stage 4.

122… Hell yeah.. that’s what happens when you ride your bigs 35+ minutes every night for a season…. Valdes and Thomas could have been useful off the bench to give our bigs rest. Not to mention Davis has been solid all year and should have been in when Fotu was gassed.

  125. NorthShoreFan March 14, 2014 12:55 pm

#123: Stage 4 what? I hope its curable…Thoughts and prayers go out to his ohana.

  129. bowwar March 14, 2014 1:32 pm

I agree that Gib should have used his bench more last night, expecially Davis and Valdes. I just don’t think Thomas is ready for the bright lights, as he hasn’t shown anything when he has been given a chance. A healthy Jawato would have helpsed this year. I believe that Jovanovich(/) did show signs of progress and should have been given more time during the year…All this is second guessing, but…

Overall, Gib has done well and I see constant improvement through his first 4 years. I hope he is able to recruit a dominant BIG for next year.

  130. bowwar March 14, 2014 1:54 pm

Just saying…If Akana has to go or not return due to the alleged violation, I hope Gib considers adding AC Carter to the staff…AC has the NBA experience, the local attraction, and I believe, he will do wonders in schooling our guards.

I do like Akana and his absence with the team must have affected their play…

  131. PurpleMaple March 14, 2014 1:56 pm

If Max Wittek is not in the mix come fall camp, then I pick Ikaika Woolsey to start against Washington. But if Wittek is in camp, then he will get the start against Washington. Just my opinion.

  132. jimmy the lock March 14, 2014 2:12 pm

    Too bad for the Wahine.

  133. AC Carter March 14, 2014 2:19 pm

I coach the Austin Toros, why would I take a demotion to coach with that snake Gib Arnold?

  134. marleysdad March 14, 2014 2:32 pm

    LOL ^^^^

  135. Chawan March 14, 2014 2:44 pm

    Gib Arnold or Frank Arnold
Norm Chow or Fred Von Appen

  136. Old School Dave March 14, 2014 2:53 pm

UW players may be going through some adjustments with demands of new HC Chris Petersen and his coaching staff. Three projected starters are currently suspended for a variety of team violations.

  137. Derek March 14, 2014 3:50 pm

In 4 years, Arnold does the same thing, with the same results. When it gets into conference play he shorten the bench to no more than 3 subs usually. Even with that, the subs get very little minutes and the starters get more tired as the conference wears on. That’s why we don’t finish the season well under his tenure and we certainly don’t well in the tournament also.

If Reggie Theus was coaching our team, I guarantee you that we would have had a different record, a better record. Or even coach Monson from Long Beach State. When our bench players don’t get to play, or hardly get to play the players get discouraged, like they are not contributing to the team. That’s why Arnold has had a lot of turnover in personnel.
I can see if walk-ons are not playing much, but for scholarship players they expect to play and they should. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jawato doesn’t return. Dressler won’t return.
If Thomas doesn’t play much next season we might leave too. I don’t fault the player for leaving because they want to play and contribute. I fault the coach(es) for having a poor evaluation of the player in recruiting in the first place and also maybe not be coaching the player properly to get the best out of the player.

  138. Truman March 14, 2014 4:08 pm

#137, are you saying that UH should fire Gib? or do you have another solution? If firing Gib is the solution, who knows if we lose Negus or Jankovic? Then we start from scratch again or close to it.

  139. bowwar March 14, 2014 4:09 pm

I agree to a certain degree that Arnold needs to broaden the bench and use more players taking into account travel and fatigue to run the type of basketball he desires. This year, it was a problem with Jawato and Dressler out due to injuries, as they would have been counted on for some spot duty. I don’t think Arnold handled those two players situations badly, as both had severe injuries and just could not contribute.

It’s fine to go IF, IF, IF, but the fact is neither Theus or Monson were absolute successes either…I think Gib has progressive improved the BB program considering the dismal condition it was left in when Nash was fired. I’d wait a few years and see if Gib has taken the program to a nother level before casting stones…

This is in sharp contrast to Chow, who I think has overstayed his welcome…I’m hoping he’s able to turn around the program this coming season and win 6-7 games. If not, then it’s time to shop for a new FB coach and athletic director.

  140. bowwar March 14, 2014 4:10 pm

Correction: Theus and Monson were NOT absolute successes either…

  141. Truman March 14, 2014 4:23 pm

If we fire Gib, there is probably a buy out clause that needs to be addressed and I don’t think UH can afford it.

  142. Truman March 14, 2014 4:26 pm

Also firing Gib would almost set a precedence that 20 wins is not enough even if strength is not tough.

  143. NorthShoreFan March 14, 2014 5:04 pm

Interesting how some on this page just love to fire people. Team not doing well…fire the coach….didn’t win a game..fire the coach…at what point does it come down to player execution?…
One can coach up a player but the coach can’t play the game. Even if they could play the game, they might not have been a good player to begin with….nuff talk of firing people.
    O&O..

  144. cocbean March 14, 2014 5:08 pm

Our players made some critical errors – Christian’s lob to Fotu, Shamburger’s drive on the last possesion of regulation, Smith’s too early foul, Shamburger stepping out of bounds, Fotu’s offensive foul….maybe a different outcome if only one of these errors is not made.

Gib is an okay coach forthe level he’s coaching at. He does have a short bench in conference where every games means something much like Riley.

  145. Andrew March 14, 2014 5:10 pm

Cal Poly leading Irvine late in the 2nd

  146. 3-Prong March 14, 2014 5:27 pm

Agreed cocobean, knock off any one of those plays and we win, gib leads big comeback, play on!

  147. 3-Prong March 14, 2014 5:29 pm

You know what time it is Sports Fans!
It’s Aloha Pau Hana Friday and the Mrs and I are TIRSTY!

  148. Warrior Dave March 14, 2014 5:36 pm

Thank God only a few misinformed fans are talking about firing Gib. I don’t care who you play but it’s not early to win 20 games so get a grip.

Lots of talk from Bobby C. and a little from Jeff P. that Coach Beeman is going to be offerred a contract by a BCS school so it might be Aloha to her. Just when the program is heading in the right direction. That sucks but some Plecoptera think its easy to bring in better coaches with he resources UH has.

  149. 808WarriorFan March 14, 2014 7:23 pm

I, like many ‘Bow fans would love to see Max Wittek transfer to UH; the competition at that point at QB will be unlike any we’ve seen in recent years…..

  150. whitey March 14, 2014 7:32 pm

kinda slow rainy evening and a good one to kick back and enjoy a glass of red wine.

  151. whitey March 14, 2014 7:35 pm

of course there are many interpetation of “a glass”. sleeze would take a 4 oz, al a little larger, and kk a corning ware measuring cup. hahahahahaaaa

  152. al March 14, 2014 7:50 pm

the new and quite sophisticated whitey sips red wine these. the sales on miller lite in wailuku “pubs” declined 27%.

  153. Andrew March 14, 2014 7:55 pm

    148.

As soon as last season finished I knew it was only a matter of time. That’s the one flaw of having good young coaches at a non BCS school.

  154. Andrew March 14, 2014 8:02 pm

I will say though tha I really like Gib and think this program is heading in the right direction under his lead, but I don’t think it was smart of UH to put the clause in his contract that if he gets 20 wins then he automatically gets another year rolled on. Twenty wins is great but if it continues to be a habit in the future of getting twenty wins but getting bounced in the first round, then that isn’t really continuing to improve the program. In my opinion though I think he will get it done though. Go bows

  155. whitey March 14, 2014 8:36 pm

al or any tsaiko, just one more question on red wine. what is a guud red wine priced in the $8 range.

  156. al March 14, 2014 9:17 pm

whitey…you pay for what you get.

for starters there must 1000-5000 different varieties of grapes/wineries in every country of the world.
then, its a matter of personal taste preference.
if you like cheap drunk, haha, then buy bag-in-a-box.

however, for under $8 buy the kirkland (yes its costco) label. try all of them including the white wines.

  157. 3-Prong March 14, 2014 10:12 pm

whitey, try Chalone Merlot or Cab. Let it breath first of course.

  158. Inyoface March 14, 2014 11:27 pm

    You fiyed.

  159. ai-eee-soos March 15, 2014 12:25 am

UH wants 30,000 seat stadium ….

    see Hawaii News Now …

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24983017/exclusive-uh-puts-out-request-for-proposed-new-stadium?

  160. al March 15, 2014 1:29 am

159…awhile back, st arranged an informal “meet the a.d.” gathering. a member of the audience asked bj about this and he did say his vision was to build a 30k seater owned and operated by the university.

    well, joke you not.

  161. wafan March 15, 2014 3:53 am

    Good morning!

  162. A-joe March 15, 2014 4:07 am

    ‘Gmorning Wafan!

  163. wafan March 15, 2014 4:39 am

    Greetings A-joe!

    Nationals this year?

  164. wafan March 15, 2014 4:40 am

Beware the Ides of March . . .

  165. Shoko March 15, 2014 6:09 am

Sounds like a strategic move on UH’s part, rather than a realistic idea in my opinion.

  166. whitey March 15, 2014 6:23 am

good morning tsaikos and have a great day.

  167. whitey March 15, 2014 6:27 am

al, 3 prong, thanks. me and my biru friends are expanding our appreciation for alcoholic beverages, so wine is a starting level which we “chang” can afford. hahahahahahaa. plus the biru companies are raising their prices.

  168. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 7:33 am

Psssst, whitey, i think wine is more expensive on my “buzz factor” scale. hehe
    Good luck on your quest.

  169. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 7:59 am

Sick of politicians like Donna Kim, Sam Slom, Will Espero and others simply grandstand and bitch and make “big body” against UH when it benefits them. Hey Donna, how about fixing the roads up in Kalihi Valley (your district – Kalihi Valley, Halawa, Moanalua), that haven’t been paved in some 30 years? Transparency, like calling up the former UH president (as any regular citizen could do, I’m sure) to complain about your son’s law school application?

  170. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 8:00 am

159 ai-eee-soos, I think the end result of this is UH will get a better deal on the use of Aloha Stadium. Legislators don’t want to pay the money for a new stadium. Pretty smart negotiating move actually! Just watch how this unfolds.

  171. whitey March 15, 2014 8:04 am

a couple of things noticeable when partaking wine, you don’t guzzle it, so it lasts longer and can actually help in body weight loss.

  172. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 8:05 am

    As the article states:

“UH’s cash-strapped Athletic Department pays for the operational costs to use the 39-year-old stadium for its home games — as much as $500,000 per year.

The university does not receive any stadium revenues other than ticket sales. It doesn’t get a share of the lucrative concession revenues generated during its football games, or from parking and sponsorship signage at Aloha Stadium.”

Not what the late Gov Burns envisioned for UH Football.

  173. whitey March 15, 2014 8:10 am

i believe that the late gov burns had aloha stadium built so UH could get into the WAC. i don’t think the pro bowl was even considered till later. basically built for UH, but in Hawaii, pols cannot keep their hands out of it. pols like grandstanding, so the purpose of aloha stadium is no longer to give UH a stadium.

  174. whitey March 15, 2014 8:12 am

    old school dave, right on!!!

  175. Andrew March 15, 2014 8:13 am

I actually think that a 30,000 seat stadium is a mistake. I mean I think it’s a good idea for now since the program is in a slump and not many people are attending games, but in the future with the kinda of goals Ben Jay has and the hope that the program rebounds to become successful again, a 30k seat stadium is not going to suffice. It really just reminds me of the ticket mistake UH had for the sugar bowl. They thought only a certain amount of people were going to want to go so they ordered an X amount of tickets but turned out way more people wanted tickets but by then it was too late and they were screwed.

  176. Andrew March 15, 2014 8:14 am

Although yeah I do like this move if it’s intended to be a bargaining chip in getting a better deal at aloha stadium

  177. Old School Dave March 15, 2014 8:19 am

NFL Comish seems to want to either do away with the Pro Bowl or move it back to the continent. I can’t help but think that the outdated and run down condition of Aloha Stadium and lack of luxury boxes, which is a standard at any stadium, plays a role in the decision. Even FCS (D-IAA) schools stadiums have luxury boxes/suites. JMHO.

  178. whitey March 15, 2014 8:21 am

i believe the AD is doing the correct thing and seat projection is excellent to start with. No stadium is designed to be fixed forever. You start with a stadium that can accommodate the students, alumni, and fans, then as the program improves, you add on. Almost every college football stadium started like what the AD is proposing. Plus it is easier to sell the idea of building a new stadium which is within financial constraints.

  179. 3-Prong March 15, 2014 8:24 am

Touche, OSD on the Donna Kim phone call. Like the pot calling the kettle black.

  180. whitey March 15, 2014 8:26 am

and the stadium will not be just a stadium. it will have classrooms, research facilities, locker rooms, admin offices, etc. it will be able to accommodate both academic and athletic functions.
