UH recruit to play in all-star game

Waianae High defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii has accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-America Game.

The game is scheduled for Jan. 4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Tulimasealii remains true to his commitment to play for the Warriors in 2013. He has received several offers since making an oral commitment a couple of weeks ago.

Time will be the judge on Ben Jay’s upcoming tenure as UH athletic director. In a telephone interview last night night, he appears to be smart and driven — two good qualities needed for the daunting tasks he faces.

It is hoped Jay will succeed. Still, Manoa chancellor Tom Apple needs to know for similar situations in the future:

• No more head-hunting firms.

• No more selection committees. It’s always good to get input from business leaders who write checks to the athletic department. There are problems with convening committees. Somebody will be left out. There can’t be a 20-member selection committee. (Oh, wait, that happened when HF was hired.) Athletic department officials should not be making big banking decisions. Bankers should not be making athletic department decisions. (Mitch Ka‘aiali‘i is the exception.)

Speaking of Tom Apple, here are the more memorable Apples:

• Adam’s Apple

• Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter

• The Beatles’ record label

• The late Steve Jobs’ job

• Dick Tomey’s “Apples and oranges” commercial

Mr. Tsai, have you had a chance to speck with BJ the AD?

What is he like? What are his short and long term goals? Does he have any plans to accomplish his goals?

    What of his contract?

Or do we wait for the announcement from UH?

I think Jay will be successful because you can’t get any worse than where we are now. As an athletic department with exception of some of the minor sports, is at “rock bottom.” When I refer to “minor” sports, I should clarify that I’m referring to non or low revenue sports. Football is the engine that drives the department due to its potential revenue and we all know that has been in the skids.

  13. RedZone December 8, 2012 8:35 am

My best to the new AD Mr Jay.

  14. Bowwar December 8, 2012 8:38 am

Just a thought, if we continue to only draw 20,000 to the football games, maybe we should hold our games at a “beefed-up” Ching field and keep all the revenues versus paying a ridiculous rental at Aloha and not receive parking or concession revenue. I hope Jay will look at the stadium arrangement and “pay per view” and bring back the old days of a packed Aloha stadium or…Ching Field. I really hope UH builds their own football stadium because I think that’s the only way they can foresee being in the black in future years.

    What about Applebees?

Anyways, would be so awesome if Tulimasealii gets to be interviewed and announces his UH pick in front of live cameras, broadcast to tons of other recruits! Gotta generate that buzz around campuses and huddles nationwide! Especially with the added spotlight on other bright homegrown student-athletes!

“Did he just say, ‘the University of Hawaii’? Hmmm… With that guy, Coach Chow, redoing the team… and we can help be part of that rebuild. I mean… play ball and study in Hawaii? Hmmm… sounds like a plan!”

  18. madeinhawaii December 8, 2012 8:59 am

Since UH only gets back about $800K from it’s $2.1 million PPV payment from Oceanic it may now make sense to kill the program. I don’t know if 800 K covers the revenues from the empty seats that might get be filled if people had no PPV. Much of it, however, depends on how many games would be broadcast otherwise by the MWC/CBS Sports connection. If they show too many home games, killing PPV won’t amount to anything.

I will not be happy until Kennedy signs his letter of intent. Until then, holding my okole.

You know how these things go with young men. People can change their minds and in the past they do all the time. Remember, the kid Pelleur from Washingston. He committed to UH, and at the last couple of weeks before NLI day he decided to sign with the Huskies. Iuta Tepa committed to UH too, then changed his mind and signed with UCLA. Thankfully, Tepa came of his senses and decided to come to Hawaii after all. Hehe. You just can’t take anything for granted anymore.

My favorite lines of all time.

    1) It’s never over, until it’s over. “Yogi Berra”

    2) Not so fast, my friend! “Lee Corso”

    3) Hello, you play to win the game!! (Herman Edwards)

    4) Playoffs! Are you kidding me, playoffs! (we might not win another game). “Jim Mora”

    5) They are, what we think they are!!!! “Dennis Green”

Classic example, the Cowboys led the Eagles 38-27 after returning a fumble for a touchdown with about 1:30 minute left in the game. The spread was -10 Cowboys. A guy in Vegas needed the Cowboys to cover the spread to win a big parlay of $18,500 on a $50 bet having won all the other games he picked. Well, you know what happened. The back up kickoff return man for the Eagles returned the kickoff for a touchdown, thereby making the final score, 38-33 Cowboys, but not cover. But, it’s not the first time it has happened in this crazy game of football and it won’t be the last.

i’m also curious, are contracts for UH AD negotiated on an individual basis or are they one year contracts for all ADs. If annually I’d like to see Jay clean house and start everyone on the same page. Experience is important but UH has struggled righting its ship, new ideas from new personnel may work better, if not, we are not any worst off as a program. The budget for new personnel for payroll and benefits should be lower to start with as all newbies are moving into a new job. Don’t hire old retreads or former ADs who lost their jobs.

I really hope UH builds their own football stadium because I think that’s the only way they can foresee being in the black in future years.

The University of Hawai`i does NOT pay rental fees for its football games in exchange for giving up parking and concession revenues. UH does pay for operational expenses such as maintenance staff; however, those costs are well under $100,000 per game.

With respect to your suggestion about creating still another major stadium on the UH Manoa campus, that would require significant changes in the City and County of Honolulu’s zoning and planning ordinances and administrative rules.

Even under the best of circumstances where no one objects to placing a 20,000-seat stadium in a residential community such as Manoa-Mo`ili`ili, it would take at least seven years before the first game would be played. If there are objections, it could be 2025 or even later before two teams come on the field.

The critical issue today at Aloha Stadium is to preserve & protect the Stadium Special Fund set up in ACT 282-2012 to address capital improvements over the next 30-40 years. The Fund is connected to the Public Land Development Corporation which is under intensive scrutiny to repeal it.

In order to protect the SSF, it would require moving it to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism as an quasi-independent state fund. The purpose of the Fund is to (re)develop segments of the 115-acre parking lot to generate revenues to improve & upgrade Aloha Stadium to make it a world-class athletic venue.

Ben Jay looks like an excellent hire for UH which is in need of some strong leadership. I wish him luck. I also hope that the current staffers in the athletic department buy into new AD’s management style, plans, and vision for the program. It’s obvious that things cannot remain as they currently are. It’s likely that some belt tightening will be necessary.

  48. Old School Dave December 8, 2012 11:01 am

Looking back at some old UH football media guides. In the senior’s profiles, one of the questions asked was: “What changes would you like to see for UH football in the future?” Many of the players responded – “To someday have an on-campus stadium.”

  49. madeinhawaii December 8, 2012 11:14 am

I think if there was an easier/free commute between the stadium and UH for the athletes, I don’t think any of the players would care one way or the other. Probably be cheaper and more beneficial to lay rail between UH and the stadium than to build a new on campus stadium.

  50. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 8, 2012 11:22 am

It would cost the CITY about one hundred million bucks to extend the transit system up to UH from Ala Moana Center while it would cost the STATE about one hundred fifty million bucks to build a new 20K-seat stadium on campus.

Much of the transit extension costs would be to purchase the land along the route.

The transit extension may very well be decided within the next three or four years – depending upon what the United State Congress decides the role of the federal government should be.

    Rent a home

No need pay rent, but pay for clean up, security, and other costs

Give up parking, concession, and most advertising revenue

Have to consider scheduling a game on Friday due to other conflicts

Stadium outdated and expensive to maintain, years to build another stadium

    Or

    Own a home

Pay mortgage (bonds) and pay for clean up, security, and other costs

Keep parking, concession, and advertising revenue

Keep rental, parking, concession revenue for other events

    Priority in scheduling events

Years to build a new stadium

Weigh out the costs and make a decision. Either way, action should have been taken years ago instead of putting in good money to fix a bad stadium.

  54. tommui December 8, 2012 11:47 am

    @18 madeinhawaii:

I’m one of those that is somewhat physically handicapped in that walking more than 100 yards becomes an almost physical chore.

But assuming that PPV gives UH $800,000 and tickets are the Stadium is about $40.00 each, the amount would equal 20,000 tickets and we got this year with its horrible record about 20,000 people in attendance.

I assume more than 20,000 people watch UH football with PPV but don’t know how many people would actually be at the stadium if PPV was eliminated.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much my family enjoyed the experience of attending the games live. Win or lose nothing beats seeing your loved ones jump up and down with joy. Even in some of the losses there were exciting plays sprinkled in that ilicited joy from the family. Now returning players strive to get bigger, stronger, faster!!! Recruit, recruit, recruit.

  61. madeinhawaii December 8, 2012 12:10 pm

    tommui,

That’s 20,000 tickets over the course of 6 – 7 home games, or approximately 3,000-3,600 tickets per game. Prior to having to give all that PPV money to the MWC, it was too high a risk to cancel PPV. But now? I’m not too sure the benefits outweigh the risk. What PPV does, however, is provide internet streaming for mainland fans, helping to keep them in the loop. At least we might find out the affect that PPV has on live audience ticket sales – particularly season ticket sales.

  62. Chicken Grease December 8, 2012 12:16 pm

  69. kapakahi December 8, 2012 1:05 pm

    #64,

Agreed…..that evaluations of prospective recruits can be tricky.

For example, UH didn’t recruit Chester Su’a (Kaimuki HS / Washington State), Siaosi Hala’api’api (Kaimuki HS / Wyoming), Cyrus Coen (Pearl City HS / Washington State) nor Castro Masaniai (Waipahu HS / Oregon State)…..YET all were at least part-time starters for their respective teams.

UH lucky to have DT Siasau Matagiese (Waimea HS) as a bounceback from Portland State, and also lucky to have DT Moses Samia (Saint Louis) and DE Beau Yap (Kamehameha) who both were all but set to commit to Baylor until finally offered just 2 weeks before NLI Day.

  70. Old School Dave December 8, 2012 1:16 pm

I remember when Dane McArthur recruited UH (the other way around) on a family vacation to Hawaii. He visited the UH coaches, who then requested some videos from him. McArthur played running back in a rural league in Saskatchewan, Canada against other small school competition, but averaged about 10-yards a carry. Coach Wagner and his staff reasoned that if he were to play at UH, he’d probably average about 5-yards a carry, which was still good. So, they offered him a scholarship, and McArthur became an outstanding slotback for UH.

    i keep hearing “tea-ow”.

    sheesh.

  98. Chicken Grease December 8, 2012 3:30 pm

Teo NEEDED to have known he wasn’t gonna win it . . . and what’s he say? He wants to win it for the people of Hawaii. Just reeks of uncharitability. You ain’t gonna need paper and pencil to keep track of the # of times he mentions “Hawaii” when he gets to the NFL.

Predictable. Google times more believeable than that 12/21/2012 BS. Pau. Done. Post # 86.

Want something positive and INSPIRING to read?

Oh and it just happens to be about a UH student-athlete. May not be born and raised here, but she is here and here for many reasons, but since yesterday was the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack… Cindy Luis writes:

I know I’ve mentioned this before but since it’s is Dec. 7, worth repeating.

Emily Hartong’s grandfather was a Pearl Harbor survivor. Royal George Hartong was stationed on the USS Montgomery. The Montgomery’s number was No. 17, which is why Hartong wears No. 17.

According to Harttong’s dad, it was the dream of Emily’s grandfather that she play for UH. She had over 100 scholarship offers but she had always wanted to be a Wahine, had a UH poster on the wall when she was around 10. And she has quite the collection of tikis beginning with her first family vacation here.

Grandpa passed away at age 90 in January of 2011, right after her freshman season.

  116. 99club December 8, 2012 4:11 pm

    Kevin,

Thanks for that. Great that her Granpa got to see her at UH.

I remember the apples and oranges line in My Big Fat Greek Wedding…

The root of the word Miller come from a Greek word, millah, meaning apple, so there you go. And our name, Portokalos, is come from the word meaning orange. So today here, we have apples and oranges. We all different now but in the end we’re all fruit.

  126. cocobean December 8, 2012 6:06 pm

    Heisman.

Johnny Football deserved to win. Manti was a long shot at best. There’s going to be a woman President before a defensive player wins the Heisman.

There are some people who have a smug attitude about the outcome. They knew Manti wasn’t going to win because they thought he didn’t deserve it. Some imply he’s a fake. Everything he says is more self promotion by a media savy athlete rather than true feelings.

But these people are in a minority. If these people were honest with themselves they’d admit their enmity is based solely on Manti signing with ND rather than Hawaii. Nothing more. If Manti had signed with Hawaii and was up for the Heisman these same people would be his biggest cheerleaders. Rah, rahing Manti everyday leading up to the ceremony.

In my opinion most people in Hawaii are proud of Manti and the way he handled the media blitz. CG, he’s a 22 year old. At times he did talk in “player speak” as did Manziel and Klien. But for the most part he spoke from his heart. Guess you’d never believe his sincerity when he said,”I’m a representative of that state(Hawaii) and I always will be. Everything I try to I try to make them proud.”

  127. laulau head December 8, 2012 6:28 pm

Sad day for Hawaii sports…ahhhhh screw it!

    BJ for Heisman!

And to top it all off, missing the party 🙁 got called to be an emergency babysitter.

Ran face first into a looping punch. Right when he was taking over the fight.

  132. Former UH Athlete December 8, 2012 7:21 pm

    I guess steroids work (allegedly).

  133. kapakahi December 8, 2012 7:22 pm

    OMG!!!

JMM KO’s Manny…..at the bell to end 6th Round…..when JMM was just about KO’d himself.

Manny ran into finish JMM….and ran into the perfect right hand counter shot…..and knocked Manny out cold….fell face first!!!

  134. Former UH Athlete December 8, 2012 7:28 pm

Jeez… Roy Jones Jr struggles to speak English. Just said that punch had shocked Pacquiao. Really… Thanks for letting us know that.

I’m sure getting knocked out cold is shocking for everybody.

  135. Bleed Green and White December 8, 2012 8:26 pm

I am proud that one of “ours”, Manti Te’o, made it to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York. He didn’t win, and that’s unfortunate, however, that young man represents the 808 well and proud. His parents raised a good, well spoke and humble young man. I am a fan for life.

BJ Penn, wow, I sure as heck didn’t want to see him go out like that. Longtime fan of his, one fight too many. Great career!

Manny Paquiao, thanks a lot. Now we will never see you “Money” Mayweather get it on. Dang he got knocked out cold!

I blame for “ducking” Floyd Jr all these years, he wouldn’t agree to a damn blood test, are you kidding me?!?!?!

Missed out on at least a $40m pay day had agreed to it……

So sad! Fans deserved to see it.

Watching the UH men’s basketball game as I type this, and boy it’s not looking good at all.

    So sad!

Now let me get to the “big one”.

UH Manoa chancellor Tom Apple. I sorry, but you should be fired!

Seems you and the school high-priced Public Relations people just don’t get it at all.

I mean the school hires a new Athletics Director in Ben Jay from Ohio State, and the folks in Ohio release the story, complete with an interview almost 5 hours before UH makes its’ announcement.

    Now that is embarrassing!

From what I read and hear, Apple made no comments, had no press conference to discuss his hire because he said we was too busy. Absolutely sad!

I guess the school the learned nothing about transparency during the recent Senate Committee hearings.

    Fire his butt!

Gather another selection committee, hire a search firm, stick to your guns that Rockne Freitas cannot and will not be considered unless he applies for the job, then end up hiring a guy who did not apply for the job.

    Really?

In my opinion, both Apple and MRC Greenwood should be shown the door. Immediately!

  136. gobows December 8, 2012 8:29 pm

    UH lose 56-63

  137. gobows December 8, 2012 8:31 pm

Sorry, we could not stay late! Hubs had to go to work this morning and I had to shuttle my son and his co-worker at 3:45am to the Honolulu Marathon!

    Have a great day folks!

  145. Buffoman December 9, 2012 6:17 am

If they UH BB team could shoot free throws, we would not be having this discussion about the team’s ability to win. They’d beat Illinois and would have beaten Pepperdine.

A team that cannot shoot free throws will not contend. They simply beat themselves. Too bad, really.

Manti has been a terrific role model for young people and a great representative for the culture of the State.
