Two linemen join 2014 class

It appears the Rainbow Warriors’ magic number is 2014.

The 2014 recruiting class expanded to seven members with the addition of Micah Kapoi of Kapolei High and Kaau Gifford of Kamehameha Schools.

Kapoi is a 6-foot-4, 298-pound left tackle. Gifford, who is 6-4 and 250, projects to be a defensive tackle at UH.

The Warrior Beat spoke with both players, each listing three factors in their decisions: 1) They want to play in front of family; 2) they want to attend a school in the same place where they expect to live the rest of their lives; 3) they want to help build the football progam.

“I’m from Hawaii,” Kapoi said, “and I want to help Hawaii.”

    Good morning ST and 3-Prong!

It’s nice to see the local boys feel good about playing in front of friends & family. I’m sure that the coaching staff has a lot to do with it.

ST ~ will you be covering the AD get-together tomorrow?

    Kekoa:

I will not be there. But I think you guys will do a good job. Take notes.

  7. Buffoman June 26, 2013 6:42 am

I guess the name change and last year’s drama (at least on this website) did not keep some terrific young men from becoming Rainbow Warriors. They make us all proud.

  8. Kekoa June 26, 2013 6:45 am

I would take notes but even NSA would have a hard time trying to break my encryption code.

Anyone need road game tickets this year; guaranteed with no limits; sit with other Hawaii fans, and I get much better seats than what they give to the visiting teams. So far, we got about 25 going to Oregon St. And Reno. Email me: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  16. Tolkein Warrior June 26, 2013 7:31 am

    Aloha Kakaiaka, gang.

Two more reasons why I faithfully buy season tickets every year. Go Rainbow Warriors!

Speaking about rainbows, interesting seeing rainbows all over the news today.

  17. tom-warriornation June 26, 2013 7:32 am

These past 2 years, we had 50 yard line seats right behind our Warriors at San Jose, Fresno and San Diego St.

EASTON ALL-AMERICAN!!! University of Hawai’i softball pitcher Kaia Parnaby became just the 14th Rainbow Wahine to earn Easton All-America honors. Parnaby was selected to the second team after one of the most phenominal single-seasons in UH and Big West history. It is Parnaby’s second All-America award this season after being named a third team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American earlier. Parnaby, UH’s Aussie senior southpaw and Big West Pitcher of the Year, broke several records during the season. She set a new conference and school single-season record and finished second in the NCAA DI with 39 wins with just seven losses. In the BWC, she tallied a solid 16-2 mark while earning Big West Pitcher of the Week honors five times this season. Along with her wins record, Parnaby also set a new UH and BWC record with 342 strike outs and broke the ‘Bows record with 312.2 innings pitched. Parnaby also set a new single-game record and became the ‘Bows first-ever ESPN.com/USA Softball National Player of the Week after she struck out 17 in an eight-inning relief effort in UH’s 12-inning win over Syracuse (Mar. 16). Parnaby helped lead the ‘Bows to their sixth overall conference title and second Big West crown. – Hawaii Athletics Media Relations

  19. Buffoman June 26, 2013 7:44 am

ST, yes I saw that. Hmmm, Nike U, I mean Oregon must have some big time friends in the NCAA. If this occurred at UH, I’d bet that we’d get slapped so hard we’d have to sit out a long time to cure the concussion of that slap.

Great news about Kapoi and Gifford – that 2014 recruit class is filling up nicely.

  22. Lowtone123 June 26, 2013 8:58 am

“I’m from Hawaii,” Kapoi said, “and I want to help Hawaii.” If only all the best recruits had this kind of resolve.

  32. Warrior Dave June 26, 2013 11:58 am

Time to bring out the spam zapper!!!

  33. A-House June 26, 2013 12:09 pm

I dislike the “spams” as much as everyone else, but one has to wonder how much thought and time goes into long “spams” as the above – person or person(s) must have a lot of time on his/her hands.

and tenacity – the love and willingness to go to such lengths to be noticed – you know, like a car driver blasting the radio.

  34. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2013 12:17 pm

    What spam?

  35. A-House June 26, 2013 12:21 pm

since I screwed up by hitting the “tab” button, I must start over and post that I agree with ST that the 2014 Warrior recruiting class may be one to be remembered – excellent job coaches!!!

it would be impossible for all the top 15 local players to commit to UH as the pull of going away is strong and the glamour of attending a BCS school will boost their egos – some will depart because UH does not offer their “major”; some like the military life; some to get away from family; or whatever the reason(s) will be; most will never return to Hawaii except for vacation.

it’s still early, but does not hurt to create a “wish”

if you had 3 wishes and it will all come to pass, what would they be?

  36. A-House June 26, 2013 12:22 pm

    ST, you missed #38!

  37. A-House June 26, 2013 12:23 pm

Can’t wait til NFL preseason football starts. I need my fix already!

  43. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2013 2:55 pm

The Patriots absolutely did the right thing in releasing Aaron Hernandez.

And now the Jets should do the right thing and claim him on waivers. A tight end in prison is better than a tight end on the Jets’ current roster.

  44. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2013 2:56 pm

OK, OK, please no jokes about tight ends in prison.

  45. Stephen Tsai June 26, 2013 2:58 pm

Under Armour was supposed to create a throwback uniform for a retro night. But that was before the AD changed the name to Rainbow Warriors. Now I’m not so sure if there can be a retro night if the old nickname is the current nickname.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 26, 2013 3:02 pm

Glad that America has taken another step towards equality with the SCOTUS decision striking down DOMA and letting the lower courts ruling stay in effect over Prop 8.

Glad to be a Warrior fan, Glad to be an American.

Anyways, a chicken is found guilty and is thrown into prison, his cell mate tells him, “You’re new here, let me introduce you to the penal system.”

  60. oldtimer808 June 26, 2013 6:02 pm

Cracking up over the tight end in prison. Boy I tell you when was the last time our football program had so many commits so early. Our coaching staff true to Coach Chow is working hard to recruit the local players to stay home.

  61. inyoface June 26, 2013 6:26 pm

Coach Chow has been a recruiter for 30 years, he’s got it down to a science.

  69. kapakahi June 26, 2013 8:52 pm

Might the Warriors also be looking at Gifford’s DT teammate #56 Kalei Meyer. Didn’t see much of $94 Gifford in the rotation last season so will keep an eye on how he does this coming ILH season.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhGvauWoz8E

Meyer gave Crusader #70 LG Louis Vailopa fits last season.

  70. turquia June 26, 2013 9:14 pm

I seriously love your site.. Excellent colors & theme.

Did you create this web site yourself? Please reply back as I’m trying to create my own site and would love to know where you got this from or just what the theme is called. Thank you!

  71. Moocher June 26, 2013 9:46 pm

really…the opinion is that CG is the supplier of spam?

before the spammage really got bad, the accused was irate about the warrior/rainbow warrior name…is the accused pissed because the flip-flop on names?

  72. Moocher June 26, 2013 9:57 pm

maybe the retro uniform will be the ones JJ first had for warriors….since retro night is retro-warrior

or do they make a retro-bow night and bring back the old unis from maybe the 70s…and bring back all the mascots from marshmallow man to bodybuilder spongee guy to vili and gaylord (i think that was his name, the wonderful man that ran out to get the kicking tee) all the way to the mascot we have now….nothing 😛

sad for new recruits, nothing to identify with…..new guy to family, “hi mom im in hawaii and at football practice….oh how is it son….its good mom, i’m a rainbow warrior……great son, what’s a rainbow warrior….ummm, it’s hard to explain mom…..well son, is there a picture of a rainbow warrior I can see?”

    get a mascot-get the picture?

Mr AD, you want to talk marketing, in my opinion the mascot is a key piece to it….get the picture 🙂

  73. kitsunegari June 26, 2013 10:04 pm

Chicken Grease IS behind the spam and if you believe he is so much against the Rainbow Warrior name, here is a little excerpt written from his own greasy fingers:

    “Why I love Hawaii

Growing up half-Japanese in Jersey, I always felt different and out of place. When I came to Hawaii and saw all the different races and mixtures, it felt like home. Even the nickname of the UH sports teams — the Rainbows — seemed to symbolize the special nature of Hawaii.”

  74. PolyMom June 26, 2013 10:10 pm

OMG does Punahou have to play a pre season game again in San Diego? Every time we play a football game on the mainland there are tons of college football coaches there. And we only have verbals from Tui and the other boy. Better make sure we sit by the patents so the dang mainland coaches don’t get to them. That’s what we try to do to keep the boys committed to the Warriors.

  75. kitsunegari June 26, 2013 10:28 pm

Go to sleep Figel. Maybe this is all a dream and when you wake up you wont be a drunk failure after all.

  76. 3-Prong June 26, 2013 11:02 pm

Kapakahi: Thanks for the Meyer clip. That guy is a player. Good motor sideline to sideline. Plays with combination of quickness and leverage and sheds blockers well. If he is a legit 6’2″ 265, he has good upside and UH should offer. He’s already a Warrior!

  77. Moocher June 26, 2013 11:06 pm

kitsunegari…..look a bit more, you will find many many posts from cg and how he did not like the switch back to rainbow warriors…personally, i think he’s peed at people and now shame to show face because of the name change and debates about the name change…and how he “lost”?

not a big deal, it’s still the same team that represents UH….

anyways speculation will abound, that’s my two cents…to me, whoever is doing it should be part of a solution instead of creating a problem…but hey, some people need drama in their life and their happiness comes through others misery…poor souls

  78. wafan June 27, 2013 3:07 am
