WOW!!!

Jenna Rodriguez blasts a walk-off, two-run homer to send the Rainbow Wahine to the College World Series.

Sixteen of the Rainbows’ 20 outs were strikeouts. But then Rodriguez drives a pitch just barely fair in left, driving in Kelly Majam, to deliver the 5-4 victory over top-ranked Alabama.

And the Rainbow baseball team beats Fresno State to win the WAC Tournament and advance to the Regionals. I think Coach Trapasso has just earned himself a multi-year contract.

* * * * *

Again, credit goes to UH media relations director Kara Nishimura, whose winning call on the coin flip — tails — enabled the Rainbow Wahine to be the home team today.

What’s going this on with the “short field” thing … the mentioned it 3 times already …

  104. Kekoa May 30, 2010 7:42 am

Does anyone else notice a little Alabama *Crow-hop” goin’ on, or is the video feed a little jumpy?

  105. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:42 am

Keep throwing dem strikes Kaia!!! 🙂 😀 😆

  106. PowderPuff May 30, 2010 7:42 am

Yeah, before 8 a.m., you’re not suppose to make loud noises or run your clothes dryer. Now, did I hear the announcer ladies say something about the Wahines’ homeruns this year being on a “shorter” field? Whatever…c’mon ladies! Let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  107. Stretch May 30, 2010 7:43 am

ROUTINE FLYBALL!! no get excited, the field is not as short as UH so hard for hit homeruns… for Alabama!!

  108. ct May 30, 2010 7:43 am

    You gotta believe!!!

    I belived!!!

  109. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:43 am

Weather Report – looks like strong TS band North in Birmingham, and lots blooming South around Mobile. Clear for now. 🙂

  110. ct May 30, 2010 7:44 am

TV sound goes off 1420 on …

  111. HiFlyer May 30, 2010 7:44 am

This is weird, watching the game on tv and listening to the radio the live tv is delayed. I hear what happens before it show on the tv.

  112. ct May 30, 2010 7:44 am

    Go Kaia!!!

  113. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:45 am

Funny how PP picked up on the “shorter” remark 😆

  114. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 7:45 am

I love how they just conjure up their own stats: 85 percent of the NCAA softball pitchers are righty?
    Uh, survey says …

  115. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:45 am

    Dat Kayla – she’s one Braud! 😀

  116. haka May 30, 2010 7:46 am

  123. ct May 30, 2010 7:49 am

  124. Bulla May 30, 2010 7:49 am

build on that lead, one hit at a time…..here we go!!!!

  125. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2010 7:49 am

Mana?! Did the ESPN announcer just say that Hawaii is starting to feel the mana?!

    Love it!

They are also givin more respect to Hawaii’s power today too!

  126. troll May 30, 2010 7:49 am

    whoops bottom of third

  127. ct May 30, 2010 7:50 am

watch out for that riser …

  130. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 7:51 am

Duh Comment No. 1: Riseballs tend to go up.

  131. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:51 am

Wow – kind of wide! 🙄

  132. Bulla May 30, 2010 7:51 am

    let’s go Wahine

  133. ct May 30, 2010 7:52 am

cmon blue … how come looked low and outside

  134. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:52 am

    Yay Jenn!! 😀

  135. ct May 30, 2010 7:52 am

    go wahine!!!

  136. ct May 30, 2010 7:53 am

cmon … looks outside … give us that corner blue

  137. duffer (iPhone) May 30, 2010 7:53 am

This ump calling those outside pitches too outside. 🙁

  138. protector May 30, 2010 7:53 am

Oh no she didn’t! Can you believe that espn witch actually said that Alabama was responsible for letting the “weaker” team in? Tried to backpeddle by saying “I’m not saying Hawaii is weak…” Grrrr!!

Now I see what Kazz & many others have been saying about the despicable ingrained (and probably in-bred?) bias. Coudn’t gauge it cause my laptop’s been on the fritz.

  139. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:54 am

How wide is that strike zone?!? 😯

  140. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 7:54 am

Duh Comment No. 2: We’ll talk about how important first-pitch strikes are.

  141. ct May 30, 2010 7:55 am

yeah protector … that’s why I turned off the TV sound

  142. Kekoa May 30, 2010 7:55 am

Announcer doesn’t know that our field is ‘shorter’ so Homey can feel the Mana!

    …But then again…is 200 ft down the L & R field line considered short?

  143. Bulla May 30, 2010 7:55 am

    shadduuup, hit by pitch……

  144. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 7:55 am

Duh Comment No. 3: If the pitches are in the strike zone they technically should be called strikes.

  145. ct May 30, 2010 7:55 am

how many beans are they going to argue about … the bama coach argues strikes and balls too

  146. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:55 am

protector – ESPN1420 is delayed, but a good alternative rather than angst! 😐

  147. Slugger May 30, 2010 7:56 am

I think Brynne Buchanan’s Dad is in the black t-shirt, sunglasses, first row above the dugout, and Yoshikawa’s Dad & brother are there, too.

Kanani’s grandma is probably vocalizing her opinion.

    Eye on the ball, Amanda!

  148. Bulla May 30, 2010 7:56 am

female espn announcer is killing me…..everything has been done to help the offense, now we have to help the defense??? sheeeeeeeesh

  149. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:56 am

You know…. “dim”, da DimWIts! 😈

  150. ct May 30, 2010 7:56 am

if you look at the other regionals … they move into the ball … and the still get the base … what’s up with dat

  151. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 7:57 am

Duh Comment No. 4: Taualii … Hawaiian name.

  152. ct May 30, 2010 7:57 am

Amanda had some good cuts … no worry … they goin get to Dunne again sooon … just a matter of time …

    Go Wahine!!!

  153. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 7:58 am

they’re now saying that you should earn your runs, not just hitting it over the fence for runs. Tell that to Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron and all the other players who has hit a lot of homeruns.

  154. labrat May 30, 2010 7:58 am

Hump inning. This is the one.

  155. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 7:58 am

#150 – No more 3200 fans dressed in Red, and #1 Ranked Team to influence you…. 😈

  156. ct May 30, 2010 8:00 am

    Go Kaia!!!

    Top 4th 3 – 0 wahine

  157. ct May 30, 2010 8:01 am

    Yeaaaa … 1 down … cmon Kaia !!!

  158. ct May 30, 2010 8:02 am

    HR Alabama 3 -1 Wahine …

Dats OK … keep in the game … get tougher … more determned wahine!!!

  159. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 8:02 am

I thought the announcers were going to greet Morgan at the plate after that homer.

  160. ct May 30, 2010 8:02 am

2 down … dats it Kaia … keep tougher

  161. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 8:03 am

Alabama’s home run shouldn’t count because it went over the fence and they didn’t earn it. hahahaha.

  162. Stretch May 30, 2010 8:04 am

Check out the dark clouds coming in… Hope they hold. How many innings is a “official” game for softball?? 5??

  163. ct May 30, 2010 8:04 am

Yea Kaia … stay tougher …

ST … TV announcers were already talking about power and a bid inning … shessshhh … maybe das bachi …

  164. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 8:04 am

I’m pretty sure 153 homers is more than 103.

  165. ct May 30, 2010 8:05 am

    sorry … thats “big inning”

  166. PowderPuff May 30, 2010 8:05 am

Re #159 – seeeeee, ST! I thought it was just me, but they really get animated for ‘Bama’s HRs. Ooooh, I hear Stretch yelling, ROUTINE…..

  167. ct May 30, 2010 8:05 am

    3 down … bottom 4th … wahine coming up … 3 – 1 Wahine …

  168. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:06 am

ESPN announcers are absolutely neutered neutral!!! 😆

  169. ct May 30, 2010 8:07 am

I believe Kaia can do this … got stay tougher … I believe!!!!

  170. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 8:07 am

    Yep. Five is official.
I’m wondering if, say, it’s stopped because of rain. Would it resume at the point it was stopped or would it reset to 0-0 the next day?

  171. Ralph May 30, 2010 8:07 am

so far its the wide strike zone that is hurting the UH batters

  172. ct May 30, 2010 8:07 am

cmon Wahine … gotta answer … Go Wahine!!!

  173. labrat May 30, 2010 8:08 am

    Wahine needs to answer.

  174. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 8:09 am

So, Rodriguez didn’t hit a home run. Instead, Dunne allowed Rodriguez to hit one?

  175. protector May 30, 2010 8:09 am

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the qualifications of the espn announcer are? After making an idiotic opinion about miss-hits (referring to UH, I guess) being cheap, unearned runs as opposed to powerful line-drive home-runs (like Alabama?). A perfect Bama cheerleader & apologist.

  176. ct May 30, 2010 8:09 am

    1 down … that’s OK … stay tougher

  177. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:09 am

    Five?😕

  178. ct May 30, 2010 8:10 am

    That’s it Traci …good swing …

  179. ct May 30, 2010 8:12 am

2 down … good at bat … when for the change … but that’s because you nevah know what the ump is going to do …

  180. PowderPuff May 30, 2010 8:12 am

The HR debate…AND the HBP plays. Isn’t it human nature to turn your back to something that’s coming toward you?

  181. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:13 am

    ‘bama sure has some big/tall players…. 😐

  182. ct May 30, 2010 8:13 am

What’s up with that … how come the ump telling Majam where her foot was …

  183. Stretch May 30, 2010 8:13 am

I don’t think they would play a game tomorrow. The talk after the rainout was if no games are able to be played by Monday, the higher seed would move on. The World Series starts on Thursday so teams need time to get there and prepare.

  184. koakane May 30, 2010 8:13 am

    good morning tsaiko’s and tsaikettes

    good morning for softbal

these tv commentators got to give me a break

    go wahines

  185. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:14 am

I think this is the fifth inning – 3 outs and then it’s official…. right? 😯

  186. ct May 30, 2010 8:14 am

how many batters begin the pitch with their foot outside the box??? Besides that … where is the line now???

  187. ct May 30, 2010 8:15 am

Go Kaia!!! 50 pitches … 40 strikes according to 1420

  188. troll May 30, 2010 8:16 am

lol at posters crying about the announcers

they are a lot better than bobby calling UH football

  189. Stretch May 30, 2010 8:16 am

This umpire is catching some heat. She is making some bad calls both ways. IF Alabama loses, I am sure they are going to blame the umpire.

  190. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:16 am

Weather radar shows it’s clear over Tuscaloosa – at least for next 1.5 hours (my guess). 🙂

  191. ct May 30, 2010 8:17 am

single Alabama .. lead off runner gets on …
cmon Kaia … Stay tough … throw some off speed stuff

  192. NYUH May 30, 2010 8:17 am

Stretch – what? did I miss someone getting HBP? 😆

  198. koakane May 30, 2010 8:20 am

how come they talk positive about about what bama is doing right and then what hawaii does wrong

  199. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:20 am

    Yay Kaia!!! 😀

  200. ct May 30, 2010 8:20 am

  207. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 8:22 am

Being in Alabama and they’re ranked #1, if there is a rain delay, the officials would wait until there is snow in hell to restart the game. 5th inning. now the game is official. hope we pull it out. GO WAHINE111

  208. koakane May 30, 2010 8:22 am

  213. Stretch May 30, 2010 8:24 am

good thing the announcers don’t know the meaning of “bachi”!!

  214. koakane May 30, 2010 8:24 am

there they go saying weaker seeded win not bigger than missouri beating oregon

  215. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 8:24 am

    ★★Go•Wahine!!!★★Go•Wahine!!!★★Go•Wahine!!!★★Go•Wahine!!!★★

well … we’ve always done it the hard way … gotta do it again …

  248. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 8:42 am

double down the 1st base line … still 2 out

  253. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 8:45 am

i didn’t agree with the announcers saying that we should pitch around the batter so Kaia could face a batter that was struggling for just that reason. putting the go ahead runner at the plate.

  254. labrat May 30, 2010 8:46 am

Where the ace? come on Coolen.

  255. ct May 30, 2010 8:46 am

    Ricketts in now …

  256. koakane May 30, 2010 8:46 am

seems now that bama is ahead the announcers starting to give wahines some luv

  257. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 8:47 am

We’re the home team for this game. We just have to answer in the bottom of the inning.

  272. ct May 30, 2010 8:58 am

    Traci SO … 3 down … bama up 4 – 3 … top of the 7th

  273. Ralph May 30, 2010 8:59 am

stop bama in the 7th and our top of the order comes up, we got the batters we want in the 7th hitting for us.

  274. PONO May 30, 2010 8:59 am

You have to give credit where credit is due. Dunne has been really tough as seems to get stronger as the game goes on. All it takes is one swing to tie it up.

  275. koakane May 30, 2010 9:01 am

    do it sit the down

  276. ct May 30, 2010 9:02 am

whats up with that inside change … looked good to me … cmon blue

  277. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 9:02 am

Did the announcer just praise the game’s pitching? I thought, a few innings earlier, she said the sport has titled too much to the hitters.

  278. koakane May 30, 2010 9:02 am

    the=them

  279. ct May 30, 2010 9:02 am

    1 down … go Stephanie …

  280. βρεω808 May 30, 2010 9:03 am

Huh? Somebody check Grampa‘s kope! 🙄

  281. ct May 30, 2010 9:03 am

ground out to Stephanie … 2 down … gooooooo Wahine !!! get the 3rd one

  282. Kekoa May 30, 2010 9:04 am

Announcer made a brilliant observation by saying that since the Wahine were not concerned with Alabama’s #1 seed that, “ignorance is bliss.” It reminded me of what someone said of the anouncers earlier.

If that constitutue ‘crying’ – then I’m drowning in tears of laughter!

  283. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 9:04 am

Well, here we go to the seventh.

  284. koakane May 30, 2010 9:05 am

this is it …………….. leave it on the field ………….. battle go hard

  285. Ralph May 30, 2010 9:05 am

    LET’S GO NA WAHINE!

  286. Matt May 30, 2010 9:05 am

Come on Wahine. Top of the order, trailing by one, last chance. This is the stuff you dream about during small kid time.

  287. ct May 30, 2010 9:05 am

    3 outs … bama up 4 – 3 … Wahine coming up for the bottom 7th

  360. ct May 30, 2010 9:26 am

ESPN announcer … are you surprised? yes I am surprised … then praises bama … then says … live by the long ball and die by the long ball … this time obviously happy the long ball won … but Hawaii bats well … and gives them more than the defense COSTS … what’s up with that … still no love … always referring to us as the Cinderella team … hey … we just beat the Number 1 seed on their home field … what’s up with that ST

  361. curveball May 30, 2010 9:26 am

Was that a miss hit ball ????????

  362. RainbowCliff May 30, 2010 9:26 am

    WOW Tsaiko Nation !

What A BIG hit as I am “AMAZE” of the heart and courage that these girls displayed as I cant believe what I just saw as that was a BIG hit in a crucial situation BUT bigger then that the ability and skill level that these na wahines show is simple delightful and “INCREDIBLE” !

Congrats to ALL of you for your support to this MARVELOUS team as they stepped up BIG time and ESPN is giving you the pub and props that you and this team richly DESERVE !

BIG WIN vs. Alabama as you end it in HIGH fashion and now Oklahoma City for the World College Series !

UNBELIEVABLE as these girls are beloved on this blog and I see why they make you PROUD of them as these ladies are “FOR REAL” !

BIG hitters who are HUNGRY to be the BEST !

    You were spot on.

  366. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2010 9:27 am

I’m reminded of that car commercial with the monkey and his pals and the background music is askin “How ya like me now!!!”

The best part was those Bama fans’ faces after that last shot!
“‘HOW YA LIKE ME NOW!!!” 🙂 🙂 🙂

  367. Bulla May 30, 2010 9:27 am

    GO WAHINE

  368. Hank May 30, 2010 9:27 am

  370. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2010 9:29 am

And in the big news …. Donovan has to pay for the World Series rings.

  371. Da Punchbowl Kid May 30, 2010 9:29 am

    True Dat, Hank!!!

  372. whitey May 30, 2010 9:29 am

  373. whitey May 30, 2010 9:31 am

can the basebows make it 2 Winnahs today???? Go Basebows!!!

  374. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 9:31 am

what announcers??? you guys wen gamble and lost your shirt? if you were unbiased you should be screaming as it was an incredible finish, starting with the top of the 7th Alabama homerun. 2 outs, walk off homerun? come on…….

  375. Stretch May 30, 2010 9:31 am

WTF!!!! I set the DVR for only 2 hours. The whole last inning, including the homerun didn’t fr!cken record. CRAP!!!

What an idiot. I wasn’t paying attention to the time. Oh well, at least I saw it when it happened!!

  376. ted May 30, 2010 9:32 am

Wow, I am deployed in Iraq and able to read about the game online. This is geat. UH softball, baseball along with HPUs softball, go Hawaii.

  377. RupertDaStupert May 30, 2010 9:32 am

I missed the win due to radio conking out. Shame the game was not televised. I would have loved the wahine’s even if they lost. They are great athletes and great role models for all Hawaii. Kelly “Roy Hobbs” Majam is a super hero as are the rest ot the wahine’s. And Bob Coolen has done an outstanding Job!

  378. labrat May 30, 2010 9:33 am

1st and 2nd seed out. Beaten by 15th and 16th seed. What do they know?

  379. PONO May 30, 2010 9:34 am

Now on to Basebows. Looks like the pitching is falling apart.

  380. koakane May 30, 2010 9:34 am

Hank the ride is not over yet, on to OKC!!!

  382. papajoe2 May 30, 2010 9:35 am

#379 go ask Mel Kiper who picked the football draft.

  383. Stretch May 30, 2010 9:35 am

It would have been a shame if all the games were rained out and Alabama got the automatic berth due to the higher seed. Granted they earned the No 1 seed during the season but we all see what can happen.

  384. koakane May 30, 2010 9:36 am

    come on wessai represent

  385. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 9:36 am

I was left in tears not knowing who to call or what to do.

Bob Coolen on TV sent the emotions even further. I have never heard his voice shake and crack under all the emotion.

This couldn’t have happened to a more deserving coach.

This couldn’t have happened to a more deserving core of young ladies.

This couldn’t have happened to a more deserving base of Wahine softball supporters that have been following them since February 11th.

  386. d1島 May 30, 2010 9:36 am

    PONO,

    Gotta “batter” the Bulldogs!

  387. Candy May 30, 2010 9:36 am

Talk about a “Buckaloosa in Tuscaloosa”!! It was a sweet hom(er) in Alabama!! Go Bows!

  388. Slugger May 30, 2010 9:36 am

Mahalo to all of you who donated to the softball program and those of you who are still putting your money where your mouth is! They need the support for this looong road trip.

    Stephen,

You might want to work in the online donation information into the next article on Na Wahine. Guess I’ll send an email to Alvin & JD.

    GO WAHINE!!!

  389. Cookie Fleck May 30, 2010 9:36 am

  390. Ralph May 30, 2010 9:37 am

Stretch take a chance, record both ESPNU 219 and ESPN2 at 3:30, supposedly third game if necessary, and the ESPNU game won’t happen, Missouri beat Oregon. They probably replay the game in the slot

  391. protector May 30, 2010 9:37 am

Awe-some, Wahine!!!! Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat…

What makes it all the more sweet was how that smarmy witch had to acknowledge UH’s win (though very grudgingly) and having to be congratulatory along with having to interview Coach Coolen. Ah, revenge really is a dish best served cold! That hypocrite (pronouncing UH homers as miss-hits/long pop-flies (flys?) didn’t say anything about Alabama’s 3-run go-ahead homer as being “just wrong” when it just cleared the fence; she was so gushingly orgasmic. What goes around, comes around.

  392. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 9:37 am

WAIT SO I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE SENSING A BCS SCHOOL BIAS FROM ESPN COMMENTATORS????

    YA DON’T SAY???? 😆

  393. madeinhawaii May 30, 2010 9:37 am

What our teams are able to do on a shoe string budget, makes you wonder what they could do with a little more, eh? Hmmm maybe UH should focus on their attention on all women sports and make significant inroads into the BCS from that end first? Sort of setting precedent.

  394. duffer (iPhone) May 30, 2010 9:39 am

Big time credit to Kaia. She kept the Wahine in the game.

  395. Ralph May 30, 2010 9:39 am

Gotta hit and play good defense….

    C’mon BaseBows!

  399. RainbowCliff May 30, 2010 9:42 am

The ESPN announcers are “SHOCKED” only because they can’t believe what happen !

BIG TIME players make BIG plays in pressure situations and this is a TEAM of young ladies who are TREMENDOUS players and they have to PROVE themselves to a bias Nation of “BIG NAME SCHOOLS” and this WIN vs a #1 seed in Alabama at Alabama says one thing “I BELIEVE” as nothing but Congratulations are in order !

Being the term “cinderella team” has been around for a long time BUT when you FIT that glass slipper just dance and pour the champange and “CELEBRATE” as perserverance builds character as these na wahines have it and soooo much more !

    GREAT win !

Stay humble and focus ladies as good folks of Tsaiko Nation we just witness Hawaii wahine sport history !

  400. duffer (iPhone) May 30, 2010 9:42 am

Mr. Kazz, CONGRATULATIONS on your un dying support to this team as you and others have been vocal with your dedication, belief and compassion to these ladies !

I have not had the opportunity to see them until now but reading your post’s along with others I can understand the ‘LOVE’ that you good folks have for these ladies as I gather there flight home will be a HUGE reception at HNL from the many local fans they have “INSPIRED” !

World Series here you come !

INCREDIBLE WIN and well deserved !

  418. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 9:59 am

Ralph reports that Mizzou lost their ace to injury.

Speaking of Ralph, I just want to say this now.

I know Ralph gets a rep for being negative and what not, but since game one, Ralph has been there at every game for the Wahine and I’ve enjoyed his company at the Rainbow Wahine softball stadium.

All I’m going to say is that when the Wahine were matched up against Alabama, Ralph was the first person to message me that we can win if we play our style. Many times throughout this post season, he has believed as much as anyone here.

Now, I know that MANY others echoed sentiments of “BELIEVE”, but I just want to say this in response to the “Grouchie Ralphie” remarks over the past few weeks.

  419. d1島 May 30, 2010 10:00 am

….that baseball must look sorta like those footballs that Rolo passed out to the QB’s for their summer workouts! 🙄

  420. madeinhawaii May 30, 2010 10:00 am

Here’s how the softball world series is firming up..

    http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html

#16 Hawaii, #15 Tennessee, and #13 Arizona St are the Cinderella teams with berths.

  421. d1島 May 30, 2010 10:01 am

    Kazz,

Nice post about Ralph….he takes a lickin’ from many of us but keeps on tickin’ 🙂

  422. jm2375 May 30, 2010 10:02 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

WOW!! Congrats to the Wahine!! Great win!! On to OKC!!!

    GO BASEBOWS!!

ST – gotta check with SteveM or other cruisers, but the NCL ships all have bowling lanes on them. Not sure how much it costs though. SteveM – need to add that activity to the Tsai-ko cruise itinerary. 😀

  423. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 10:02 am

Programs make good fans and vice versa.

The Rainbow Wahine and all directly involved with that program are the “pure hearts”.

    They deserve EVERYTHING they get.

It’s an honor for us as fans to wear their colors and cheer their names and to feel it when they lose and to cry along with them when they win.

  424. Kekoa May 30, 2010 10:04 am

Heading over to Nancy’s to make sure

~ KK doesn’t exceed his EIS limit.

~ Keep Kazz from throwing chairs and tables around and scaring the public.

~ Serve animal parts to Ralph.

~ Keep a sharp eye out for Honey.

…but mostly, to savor a terrific win for our Super Regional ‘Bama slayers!

  425. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 10:06 am

    D1,

Ralph can be “rough” around the edges in critical criticsm of our programs, but he is a good guy and genuine.

Got to know him more over this season and bruddah has been watching Na Wahine out there in Manoa since the Brooke Wilkins days.

  426. 808ike May 30, 2010 10:16 am

    I just want to celebrate!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  433. 808ike May 30, 2010 10:25 am

    mih,

Arizona St. is still playing Florida, and Florida is ahead 3-0 in the 4th inning. They are not in yet…

    ST ~

Maybe you could get word to whoever writes for the UH athletics site. Their short initial update about today’s game is incorrect. The wrote that Jenna’s walk-off HR was a 3 run blast which was her first homer, not the 2nd one. Thanks.

Off to get flowers… Enjoy the celebration at Nancy’s, gangeez.

    Esme & out….

  443. d1島 May 30, 2010 10:57 am

  445. madeinhawaii May 30, 2010 11:02 am

All right.. BaseBows! looking good! 7-3

  446. troll May 30, 2010 11:03 am

Coach Coolen said it best. In a post game interview, “this is the best day of my life.”

These are words of joy. And like others have said you have to feel very happy for him and his team.

This is great. And exciting. And dramatic.

    It like witnessing something special.

It also great to see fans happy, smiling and exuberant in the Na Wahines win.

Let’s keep it going. All the way. Number one.

  447. d1島 May 30, 2010 11:05 am

    Come on Spangler….

  448. Matt May 30, 2010 11:07 am

Baseball team leading 7-3 top of the 7th. UH is the home team in this game as well.

  449. d1島 May 30, 2010 11:08 am

    Time to turn two…

  450. labrat May 30, 2010 11:09 am

Wahine rocked SEC’s best pitcher. No doubt they will go all the way.

  451. labrat May 30, 2010 11:10 am

Dunne was breathing hard at the end. UH’s lineup will wear out any pitcher.

  452. d1島 May 30, 2010 11:11 am

So the Hohokam made the stadium and left? 😕

  453. d1島 May 30, 2010 11:12 am

    Slam it shut Lenny Linsky!

ST – gotta check with SteveM or other cruisers, but the NCL ships all have bowling lanes on them. Not sure how much it costs though. SteveM – need to add that activity to the Tsai-ko cruise itinerary.

jm2375 — it’s possible to search for features at the VTG site, but bowling alleys is not a listed choice. Without extensive searching, the only ship I know that has bowling alleys is the Norwegian Pearl (the ship you were on last year).

Lots of ships have rock climbing walls, golf simulator, mini-golf course, full basketball/tennis courts, and even ice skating rinks. 🙄

The bowling alley and pool tables (another ship) are an engineering feat, even though a cruise ship does not shift much.

BTW, I liked the private karaoke rooms in the night club on the Pride of Hawaii (now Norwegian Jade). That was unusual… 🙂

  455. oldie May 30, 2010 11:19 am

Congrats to Coach Coolen and the Wahine!

Planning to make a copy of the game with both ESPN-TV audio and ESPN 1420 radio audio (with the audio synced to the video) so you can switch back and forth between the good announcers and the so-so ones. Hopefully, got all the pieces I need recorded correctly.

Any Tsaiko wanting a copy email me at hoherb at yahoo dot com.

  456. A-House May 30, 2010 11:20 am

Just like in all sports on TV, the announcers are unabashedly biased to the higher ranked BCS schools.

The umpire behind the plate was also biased to Dunne’s outside and inside pitches making it difficult for UH batters. Yes, she recorded 15 SO, but hom many were due to the ump behind the plate?

Will agree that some UH batters kept chasing the “risers” just like when they played Lawrie. Hope they will do better IF Wahine play UDUB in OKC.

And, just like a Hollywood script, Na Wahine pulls it out via the “long ball” for their greatest win in their short history.

Hope all the Na Wahine bitten by the “bug” feel a lot better than yesterday!

ON TO OKC and, yes, Kelly Majam was correct, “we will beat Alabama”!!!

    So proud, so proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  457. Watch Godgifu May 30, 2010 11:22 am

Yes Mr. Troll, ALL the way as your positive post’s on the girls has been inspiring to read !

Athletics brings out the BEST in all of us and when Hawaii can ‘WIN” on the BIG stage it just makes all Hawaii faithful that much happy proud of the 808 !

Yes ! Mr A House sir I feel your “SO PROUD” ! as your summation is always interesting to read with good thought and “unbias” perception !

You and the many other bloggers are happy and pleased as to over come obstacles that this Hawaii team has to go through and do it “MILES” away from the Aloha State speaks VOLUME of their intestinal foretitude !

Congrats kind sir as “ALL” aloha in the A House Family is fine and dandy as good as Hawaii own kona coffee candy !

  467. protector May 30, 2010 11:56 am

It’s just too cool (although stressful) to see how the hitters are continuing to bail out / save the pitchers’ bacon at crunch time (for both teams).

Keep the dream alive!! Thanks to my laptop, I guess you’ll see this in another 8-10 minutes.

  468. bb May 30, 2010 11:57 am

    #460…Tombo Ahi,

I shi+ you not…I went to surf after the game and as I was out in the water I thought to myself “I hope a video is posted by the blogspot guy.” I come home and there it is. Thanks for putting that up.

I also know how you do your local sports compilations during the football season. Am I getting greedy for you to do one for this weekend as well? Even with the national stuff? Okay, I’m getting a little over my head. With baseball hopefully winning and HPU as well, looks like its a pretty good weekend for local sports. Keep up the good work with the vids. Always a must watch.

  469. troll May 30, 2010 11:57 am

  470. Pomai May 30, 2010 11:58 am

Just returned home from day at the beach with the grand daughter paddling. Tried to catch parts of the game but not much luck. They did announce Na Wahine winning over the PA system.

Thanks Tombo Ahi, that was nice to watch, have to admit I had a tear in my eye watching the clip. These girls are just an awesome bunch of young women, an deserve every honor they get. I am so happy and proud of them.

And I pledge right now that when they win the National Championship they will get rings no matter who pays for them.

Also a hughe congradulation to Coach Coolen and all the Ass’t Coaches, you deserve it all too.

Now no matter how it turns out, I think that we as fans should be at the airport to greet these young ladies when they come home.

Damm I haven’t been this happy in a long long time,

    Mahalo NA WAHINES

Right onh Kazz, old Ralph gets teased a lot, but most of it is done in kind. But truth be told Kazz is right he is one of the biggest supporters of Na Wahine softball there is, he is there every game, and supports them $$$ wise also.

  492. protector May 30, 2010 12:28 pm

    Stretch on 480,

I’m also curious to know the reaction.

I was thinking that that lady (and I’m using the term loosely) announcer for the softball game kinda reminded me of the jerk senator in the movie Iron Man 2 having to smile & acknowledge the achievements of Tony Stark & Col. Rhodes
(and presenting them with medals) when she had to acknowledge the Wahine as winners of the Super Regional & having to interview and congratulate Coolen. What sublime justice!

    “I Made It”
    by Kevin Rudolph

(This song is also used by Rainbow Wahine Alex Aguirre as her “up to bat” theme.)

I look up to the sky and now the world is MINE, I’ve known it all my life, I MADE IT!

I used to dream about the life I’m living now, I know that there’s no doubt, I MADE IT!!! I MADE IT!!!

Unknown from a city where no one believed in me, but I never gave up the fight…

But now I’m on top, I told you to let it rock, the money’s fallin’ from the skkkyyyyyyy, I MADE IT!!!!!!!!!

I look up to the sky and now the world is MINE, I’ve known it all my life, I MADE IT!

Chawan the world series is double elimination, two separate divisions-UH, Missouri, probably UCLA & Florida in the West or left side bracket, the winner plays 2 of 3 against the East or right side bracket, Washington, Georgia, Arizona or Tennessee winner

Nice mention of Bess in this CBS article.

During a practice Saturday held at the team’s indoor facility, Henne gave his teammates and the assembled media a taste of what he is capable of doing this season. He launched a perfectly thrown deep ball to Davone Bess for a huge play down the field.

  513. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 1:51 pm

I got 2 hours of sleep last night tossing and turning just waiting for the game to start and the end result to come.

It came, I didn’t eat anything until 2 hours ago, I want to take a BIG NAP, but my feet haven’t touched the ground yet!!!

    😆

  514. Garret May 30, 2010 1:52 pm

Nice mention of RGM in this South Florida Sun-Sentinel article. The reporter seems surprised that one of the starting CB candidates for Miami cannot cover RGM…I don’t think that Warrior fans are surprised.

Found it interesting that CB Jason Allen struggled to cover Ryan Grice-Mullen in the slot. Not sure if that says something about Allen, or RGM.

  515. Tombo Ahi May 30, 2010 1:55 pm

    Chawan,

In an email I got from Coach Coolen he said the logistics made it difficult to execute since school is out of session and some players go their own ways during the summer, like the mainland girls going home for the summer.

If anything, we will discuss with Coolen the logistics of supporting one in the fall to welcome them back. Hopefully it coincides with the distribution of some “BLING” to the players if the timing is right or we can time it so that it does! 😎

    Hey Kazz

Hope the Wahine puka $500. 🙂

  519. Garret May 30, 2010 2:13 pm

This article (which gives the arguments for Texas choosing to go to the SEC) actually makes me think that Texas might end up going to the *Big 10*. They would need to take Texas A&M also, which would mean that the Big 12 might need to take TCU, which could throw all of the previous conference expansion scenarios out the door. Texas going to the Big 10 would really throw off all the previous predictions and open up slots in the Big 12 and Pac-10 that would create HUGE conference shuffling in the Pac-10, MWC, and WAC.

Previously, everyone who discussed Texas going to the Big 10 focused on the $22 million that the Big 10 generated in TV revenue vs. the $11 million the Big 12 got for Texas. However, one important thing to note is that the Big 10 formed a powerful organization (CIC) that negotiates research money with the government on behalf of *all* conference schools. That can mean over a hundred million dollars each year for each school!

Penn State joined the Big 10 in FY 1990. At that time Penn State had $256 million in total research while UT-Austin had $228 million. Now, Penn State has $701 million in total research while UT-Austin has $493 million. That is nearly $200 million per year in research money difference in the growth of Penn State’s research funding since they joined the Big 10 relative to Texas’ research funding!

I would love it if UH could have a similar research collaboration with its conference members…but I don’t think many other WAC schools have as much research funding as UH.

  520. d1島 May 30, 2010 2:16 pm

So does form hold in the brackets as the teams advance to the WCWS or is there a re-seeding?

  521. ct May 30, 2010 2:18 pm

Garrett – Thanks as always for your info. Always appreciated.

But I must say, UH has heard what you were saying all along. The only way for UH to get more valuable for conference realignments is to win … and that they have done … recently … so far … so just win baby …

Sorry, saw it was posted earlier….but enjoy again!

  524. Garret May 30, 2010 2:34 pm

    ct,

But could the WAC schools form a research collaboration that could boost all members in research funds? That can be especially crucial when you are talking about smaller research programs that do not have a big stream of funding from government sources.

I’m just trying to think of ways that the WAC could become stronger and bring in more money to each member University (especially UH!). Trying to look at models of how other Athletic Departments increase funding for their Universities to see what UH and/or the WAC could do differently to boost everybody…

  525. d1島 May 30, 2010 2:37 pm

Garrett – Yes … the WAC and UH should look for grant opportunities and alliances .. that’s for sure … and I hope we can find some so that we can keep our brain trusts at home … so my boys will have an opportunity here at home. So much can be done to bring research monies here and take advantage of our ties to the Pac Rim nations and the Asian continent … we have so much going for us … it just hard to believe that we cannot leverage them. Keep the ideas flowing … we need big thinking

  548. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 4:12 pm

It’s amazing how people notice obvious things.

I’ve been accused of some BS about how I am imagining ESPN sounding “biased” towards BCS conference schools and not doing their homework on schools like Hawaii in big post season situations.

I’ve made some phone calls in excitement since this morning and the reaction was the same. From a friend on vacation in Oregon to my friend’s dad and all the people in between, they all couldn’t believe the slight that the Wahine were getting throughout the broadcast.

They all asked me, was it always like this? I replied, well, this is the first time on national TV for the Wahine in two years, but in essence, could you not expect it?

When you look at it, the media, the NATIONAL media, is conditioned and geared towards the usual suspect of winners, however, who is going to deny the FACT that if you pride yourself as the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” wouldn’t you pose some real professionalism in researching facts as opposed to spewing biased commentary based on what is or has been the norm?

Oh wait, doing research is harder!

To call the Wahine’s additional runs other than solo homers “unearned” is plain dumb.

To heavily suggest that the Wahine’s homers were due ONLY to high altitude and small parks is ignorant since we have hit 12 home runs since the Palo Alto Regional and through the Super Regionals in two seperate parks AT SEA LEVEL IN PARKS THAT ARE BOTH 200 DOWN THE LINE AND 220 DEAD CENTER!!!

In the end it didn’t matter, the truth came out, and the deserving winners emerged.

However, the truth in the national perception was truly exposed for what it is and to make excuses in defense of it only adds to the ignorance and disrespect of 21 hard working young ladies that are representing the State of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii with honor and class.

The proof of favoritism was on display today, just ask anyone who watched and listened to the ESPN broadcast.

Personally, like I have been suggesting, I did NOT even watch the live television broadcast as I had set the DVR on, but opted to listen to the game called by Blaine Kauwe and Lori Santee, who gave EQUAL “excitement” to Bama’s runs as with Hawaii’s.

I met up to celebrate with some Tsaikos this morning and they filled me in on the debacle that took place over the airwaves ala ESPN, so when I returned home I watched the game in full to hear everything and you can just tell how “crushed” the play by play gals were that their favorite Alabama squad was eliminated.

    things are looking up…

men’s volleyball and women’s volleyball are in the national spotlight and are considered elite programs again.

track has done well with a limited number of participants.

the baseball team has made a remarkable late season surge to get back to the big one.

wahine softball just put a huge exclamation point on national tv today getting to the csws for the first time. i am sure that many will be pullng for our girls and i won’t be surprised if they become the darlings of the tournament. long ballers who will be the smallest team out there and everybody loves hawaii.

i have to believe that the football team should perform better than last year’s injury riddled team. we seem to possess the potential and talent to put together a stronger representative of our state. a lot of pressure surrounds this current coaching staff who have taken on quite a different look from its original staff just two years ago.

only mack and rich miano are handling the same chores from day one. several incumbents find themselves with new positions and with five new faces from the first of mack’s staff we seem to be constantly in a state of rebuilding the staff.

its time to hunker down and make something happen. enough indecision time to turn it on.

    Al,

I agree with you about Kelsi Dunne. On an Alabama website, 2nd pitcher Charlotte Morgan was quoted in saying that J-Rod’s homer was a “lucky shot”.

Morgan was visibly dejected as much as the ESPN commentators were emotionally dejected, however Kelsi Dunne, looked genuinely respectful to the Wahine while shaking hands at the end.

For Dunne, she knew she was good and was the ONLY big difference in Alabama winning over the Wahine as there is a big dropoff in pitching talent beyond Dunne, however you can tell by her face that she respected the Wahine for the legitimate threat they posed to her all series long.

    FULL ARTICLE:

With the bitter 5-4 defeat, Alabama ends the season 52-11, and Hawaii advances to the field of eight at 48-14 on the year.

While Bama fans were asking “What happened,” Hawaii players wondered what time curfew was?

“The most exciting day, other than the birth of my two children,” said Hawaii skipper Bob Coolen. “My phone hasn’t shut off. It’s scrolling (congratulatory) text messages. This is what you aspire to as a coach.”

What had been a school-record 28-game winning streak is now a two-game, quite frustrating season-ending skid.

Said Tide coach Patrick Murphy: “We were hitting a lot of pop-ups, which is not like us. Stuff happens. We had so much fight in us. We didn’t give up.

“I think we definitely overachieved (this season), by working hard. We had seven people (who were) either new or in new positions.”

“Hits aren’t always going to fall, but not once did we ever believe we couldn’t do it,” said Whitney Larsen.

GAME STORY: Hawaii, as you know by now, can hit the softball. The Rainbow Wahine added to their NCAA record when Jenna Rodriguez crushed her 16th – and the team’s 153rd – round-tripper of the year in the bottom of the first. Two were one, and Hawaii was home team by virtue of an NCAA coin flip, and led 3-0 after one.

Charlotte Morgan, playing in her last home game, got the Tide on the board with a blast to right center with one down in the fourth.

Down to its final six outs, the Tide had the top of the order coming up in the top of the sixth. Kayla Braud slapped to the mound, and beat the throw. After Cassie Reilly-Boccia hit into a force, Morgan walked. Whitney Larsen then laced a 1-2 Kaia Parnaby offering over the wall in left center, igniting the crowd of 3,130 and giving Bama its first lead of the afternoon. Amanda Locke popped out after flirting with several homers that went foul, and Jazlyn Lunceford doubled with two out. Murphy pinch-hit senior Alex Blewitt, and Coolen brought in an ailing Stephanie Ricketts, who was battling either flu or food poisoning, depending on who you ask.

After Blewitt lined sharply to third to end the inning, Dunne needed six outs against the nation’s most potent offense to get her team to Oklahoma City, site of the WCWS.

In the sixth, Dunne struck out the side. Bama failed to score in the top of the seventh.

The seventh began with a 3-2 walk to Kelly Majam, the nation’s top home run hitter. Jessica Iwata went down swinging, and Melissa Gonzalez looked at strike three. Rodriguez, who had homered earlier, did so again on what at first appeared to be a long foul. With that, Bama’s dream ended, and Hawaii’s continued. Rodriguez also had a double, leading all hitters with her three-for-four performance.

“I was just looking for something to hit. It hit me when I was rounding first base, and my emotions came out,” said Rodriguez. “Our team stays up, constantly. We all feel we can do it.”

Rodriguez won a national championship last year in junior college. Now, she will play for another.

“Greatest feeling in the world,” she said.

Morgan had two hits and an RBI in her final appearance at the Alabama Softball Complex. Lunceford was the only other Tider with a pair of safeties. Dunne (30-6) went 6.2 innings, surrendering five hits, but the two that left the yard decided the game. She walked two, and hit four batters. Ricketts (29-8) got the win for one scrappy bunch of Islanders.

“Every single one of them fought out there,” Dunne said. “They made me work hard.”

Bama left three on base to Hawaii’s six. Neither team attempted a steal, which is typical for Hawaii but atypical for the Tide.

“I don’t know if we were anxious, or what,” said Morgan. “It hurts, because we worked so hard. One pitch, they got the lucky hit. It happens.

“We had a great year. I have no regrets.”

HAWAIIAN HISTORY: Thirty years ago this weekend, the Rainbow baseball team lost two games to Arizona in that squad’s only World Series appearance. The softball team will now make it’s first appearance in school history at the WCWS. The program began in 1985, and Coolen took over in 1990.

“We put Hawaii on the map,” he said.

  556. al May 30, 2010 4:33 pm

kazz…no worry. what happens on the field is most important.

    that’s the bottom line.

from youth leagues to our collegiate teams, we are always overlooked. we don’t look like the type of team that should be competing with others. it happens in goodwill tournaments, little league, etc, etc.

but, we have heart and we have pride something that comes along with hawaii. walk softly and carry a big stick.

    no worry.

just look at the faces of disbelief today. that tells the whole story my brother.

be humble, be ourselves, be hawaiian.

I definitely agree with you that Capuano and Smith sounded disappointed. That’s too bad because this Hawai’i team can flat out play. Even when they cut to the booth team of Eric Collins and Jennie Finch at the Missouri Super Regional, Finch sounded a little disappointed too.

I know I’ll be rooting for UH this coming weekend as I’m sure the rest of the WAC will be too. With all the fanfare that Boise State’s program gets, UH’s has been just as good. UH has the BCS appearance in the Sugar Bowl, the volleyball team got to the Final Four last season and now the softball team goes to the WCWS.

Even though Kaia Parnaby gave up 2 homers, I thought she was fabulous being put into a very high pressure situation. I read that Stephanie Ricketts had “flu-like symptoms” today, so Kaia was really put on the spot. Alabama didn’t get a base runner to second base until the 6th. She deserves a whole lot of credit.

2 out homer in the bottom of the 7th! I jumped out of my chair! Yesterday I wrote that the Rainbow Wahine now kn0w they could beat Alabama…now they know they can beat anyone.

We had a whole group here watching the game and everyone agreed that Capuano and Smith were very anti-Hawai’i almost the entire game.

Here’s the wild thing: I think Hawai’i has a great shot at winning the whole thing. Parnaby got some terrific experience while Ricketts was ill most of the weekend (hopefully she will feel better by Thursday). And the Hawai’i bats will keep them in almost any game.

This was a huge, huge win for the WAC and Hawai’i. Go Bows!

Oh, agree about Finch too. It is pretty clear that the announcers and former players around college softball believe that the sport begins and ends with the Pac-10 and SEC.

It’s time the smaller conferences got some respect. The difference between the WAC’s best and the SEC’s best isn’t much at all.

I thought the exact same thing!! Even on the HR by Rodriguez at the end, I was screaming, “It’s fair! It’s fair,” and the announcers were not really saying anything like they couldn’t believe that a little WAC team could come in there and win.

It was a thrilling moment and they were way too subdued. They kept calling Hawaii the “weaker team” all game long, which really bugged me.

    Let’s check the Wahine “Expectations”:

    1- Expect To Win (Won)

2 – Expect to be in a dogfight (I’d say striking out sixteen times means that the were in a dogfight)

3 – Expect that sometime during the game, winning will appear to be impossible (Not impossible, but chances may have appeared to be slim with two outs in the bottom of the seventh)

4 – Win the game late in the fourth quarter. (Well didn’t it in the fourth quarter, but does the bottom of the seventh count? I think so.)

Great win Wahine!!! Celebrate well, and then get some much needed rest.

When David knocked down Goliath, all everyone saw was the little David knocking down the Giant. No one was there to observe the thousands of hours that David spent shooting pebbles at rocks, trees, lions, and wolves. David had prepared his whole, entire life, to knock out the Giant. Only thing is that no one else was there to see the preparation phase of the equation.

The wahine have prepared their entire lives for this post-season tournament. Only their immediate family members, friends, coaching, and support staff know what kind of preparation they have been through. The Wahine are in the World Series because they belong there. It doesn’t take milions and millions of dollars to sweat. All it takes is effort and time. The wahine may not have tons of money, but it’s obvious that they put in tons of effort and time. Good luck next week. Although some of us are quiet in our support, we indeed are there to support you. Mahalo.

I think I’ve watched J-Rod’s walkoff two run homer aka “THE DAGGER” about 6 times now.

I still think the best part about the whole thing was watching Bob Coolen’s reaction. He had his glasses on and the first time I could tell he was choking up but I couldn’t see if he was acutally tearing up, but in the replays you could see tears on his face.

Not enough can be written about the timeless dedication he has put into this program since he arrived at Manoa.

thats a good article from #576

I wonder who Bama would have started Game 2 if Game 1 was not a mercy rule game.

To me it seems that Game 1 allowed Alabama to take the foot off the gas just a little and subsequently in Game 2 the pitching was not as dominant and our bats came to life.

  578. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 5:51 pm

For people that DVR’d the game, try go back and look at the faces of the Wahine as soon as they arrived at the bottom of the 7th when they huddled as they always do by the dugout.

I saw the SAME looks that I’ve been seeing from my seat right above 3rd base above the Wahine dugout at Manoa since February.

This team continues to amaze me at how mentally strong they are.

  579. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 5:57 pm

    BB,

I think Alabama would have been confident enough to start Morgan. Dunne is capable of playing a lot so if Morgan got lit up she would of got yanked easily.

Also, Bama was pretty sure they’d be going to Oklahoma City so they wanted to have two pitchers ready to go and I think Morgan didn’t pitch for about 2-3 weeks.

Troll, sorry I have to back up Kazz on this, as I didn’t see the game live I saw the replay they had on espn. Without a doubt these espn announcers where bias, they fully expected bama to roll over Hawaii an the way they called the game it came across loud and clear. Now I agree that at times Kazz get a little emotional an express himself with that emotion but the facts he states are true.

You can ask around, I do see the game from both sides, an am the first to give props to good plays by both teams, I mean a good hit is a good hit, a good play is a good play period.

But I do draw the line when so called experts who are hired to be fair in their play calling are not, and these guys where not.

But no matter what anyone says about us being lucky or we only hit at a short park or altitude, they can not say we didn’t win fair and square.

    Another article out of Bama:

TUSCALOOSA — One of the most memorable seasons in Alabama softball history hinged on a moment this program won’t soon be able to forget.

The Crimson Tide — national No. 1 seed, SEC champs and winners of 28-straight before Saturday — had gone to the wire in this weekend’s NCAA super regional with No. 16 seed Hawaii, a gritty underdog who kept swinging but was down to its final out before a largely hostile crowd of 3,130.

Those fans rose to their feet in unison Sunday afternoon, prepared for relieved celebration, only to watch Hawaii’s Jenna Rodriguez pull the first pitch of her at-bat against Alabama’s Kelsi Dunne very deep to left field, near the foul pole.

Dunne wasn’t sure if it was fair or foul. Neither was Rodriguez, who stopped and crouched near home plate to watch it sail into the distance. The only one who seemed to be sure was Hawaii head coach Bob Coolen, who from his viewpoint as third-base coach began jumping with one thought in his head: “We’re going to Oklahoma City.”

“There was no wind to push it to the left,” Coolen said, “and that ball had a good three, four, five feet to the right. It was, ‘We made it.’ That was it.”

Rodriguez’s two-run, walk-off home run clinched a 5-4 victory in the third and deciding game of this weekend’s series. In a flash, Hawaii secured its first Women’s College World Series bid and dealt a bitter dose of agony to Alabama, which is not going for the first time in three seasons.

The Rainbow Wahine (49-14) and a brief cheering section filled mostly with parents celebrated Rodriguez’s home run – her second of the day – on the field. Sports drink was poured on Coolen, who later called it the “most exciting day other than the birth of my two children in my life.”

Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide (52-11) and many of its fans stood in shocked, sudden silence, reluctant to leave the stadium.

“They have great hitters,” Dunne said. “Obviously, they led the nation in home runs. Every single one of them fought out there, and they made me work hard. That’s what good teams do. I mean, they’re dangerous. Congratulations to them and good luck.”

Dunne (30-6) took the loss after striking out 16 batters — of 20 recorded outs — during 6 2/3 innings. The Rainbow Wahine, which set a new NCAA record for homers, exited Tuscaloosa with 154 on the season. On Sunday, Hawaii’s five runs all came on home runs by Rodriguez, who belted a three-run shot in the first inning.

That early 3-0 lead held until the sixth inning. Other than solo home run by Charlotte Morgan in the fourth, Alabama struggled to make solid contact and get baserunners against effecient pitcher Kaia Parnaby. The Crimson Tide needed the long ball and got it when shortstop Whitney Larsen drilled a three-run home run to provide a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

“That’s usually not our style,” Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said. “We usually keep the inning going, and we had a couple of stalls there and it hurt us. Even after (Larsen’s) three-run home run, I thought we needed some more runs. That’s the killer. They’re the ‘home team.'”

Batting last after winning a coin flip, Hawaii had the top of its order up in the seventh inning. Dunne, who had struck out the side in the sixth, walked Kelly Majam to open the final frame. But consecutive strikeouts left only Rodriguez standing between Alabama and Oklahoma City.

Murphy said the idea of intentionally walking Rodriguez flashed through his mind “for a second, but I didn’t say anything out loud.”

“Dad’s always told me you want to be that person up with two outs and just thrive on it,” Rodriguez said. “I came up there knowing I was going to hit.”

Rodriguez’s homer made a winner out of reliever Stephanie Ricketts (29-8) and was an ending remarkably similar to last season. Dunne allowed a two-out, walk-off grand slam to Florida’s Ali Gardiner — to left field — that knocked Alabama out of last year’s WCWS.

That team, however, had won two games in Oklahoma City to match Alabama’s all-time best performance. Even higher hopes were there for the 2010 Crimson Tide, which secured the program’s first NCAA No. 1 overall seed by becoming the program’s first squad to win the SEC regular season and tournament titles.

“We won 28 in a row and had seven new people in different positions and had a whole new lineup,” Murphy said. “I think we overachieved.”

The aftermath was emotional for the team. Murphy wore dark sunglasses to the press conference, while players fought back tears beside him. Three seniors won’t be back next season for Alabama, but the only starter of that group is Morgan, the SEC player of the year and the most decorated player in program history.

“I don’t think we should hang our heads at all,” Morgan said. “We worked hard in that game. We came back. We fought. We never gave up. And you know what, one pitch, they got the lucky hit. It happens. It’s why it’s called softball. It’s why certain teams end up in the World Series, different teams every year. If we didn’t want to play a game that had adversity, we wouldn’t play it.

“I really hope that everyone does not hang their heads. We had a great year. I have no regrets.”

Here you can see that Kelsi Dunne is more mature than her senior teammate in the circle.

If you look at Melissa and Jenna at bat in the last inning you will notice how relaxed they were. You would never guess that the game was on the line.

  595. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 7:47 pm

    Haka,

We had six players in new positions and two freshman leading in our lineup.

We ate up the home run record, we ate up WAC and Palo Alto Regional competition.

We shocked the #1 seeded team on their field in the Super Regional for all the nation to see.

    I think WE over-achieved also. 😎

  596. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 7:50 pm

Keilani will most likely be there to support her sis.

Not sure about Keilani’s teammates though. After all you them BCS folk stick together yeah? 🙄

I remember reading earlier where the Bama coach said that Hawaii has a great softball team. I think it was after the second game.

  598. haka May 30, 2010 8:04 pm

    Yeah Kazz,
If it weren’t for the “lucky rainbow” I don’t think we would have had a chance!

We will be getting a lot of long overdue attention this coming week. The girls know that they can enjoy it, but Katie and Amanda will make sure they stay focused. You never know if you’ll ever get the chance again and for the seniors…well you gotta feel good for them. It takes a lot of hard work, talent, chemistry and “luck” to play at this level.

    Go Wahine!
    Lucky you live Hawaii!

  599. Matt May 30, 2010 8:11 pm

The Alabama coach did congratulate the Wahine as well as Kaia. Just because it wasn’t in those articles, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Here are the postgame quotes from Alabama’s website.

    labrat,
reading that jenna played in the jr college world series last year and that her father prepared her for those situations all her life, it’s understandable that as coach coolen said, “she shows no emotion”. jenna said, “she knew she would hit”!!! you gotta love it!

i know i will have to play it back one more time before bedtime…i know it! 🙂

    > How come you don’t want to see the ESPN crew for what they are? Media mugs who are mean-spirited-high-maka-maka vermin. They are washed up, former players who have no business being around true athletes, much less describing their play…Is it because they are like you! Maybe that’s why you feel so badly for them.

    > Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is? Kazz certainly does. So do the Tsaiko’s who raised money to help send the team to the Regionals. What did you do? Seems like you are the whiner…the crybaby. Cry, cry, cry for your media talking heads.

    > Why can’t you talk about the team in a more positive light like Kazz does? Give us the facts about those media darlings of yours? How is it they screwed up everything from the dimensions of our field, to the identities of the players. What prompted them to add those delicious tidbits about how the Wahine rely on homeruns – how they don’t earn their runs by playing small ball.? BS!

    > Enlighten us oh wonderous Troll. Tell us exactly how the Wahine players were given credit for crunching the long ball in comparison with the Alabama girls. No, try wait, I’ll tell you how…

All I can say to Morgan is that Hawaii was really lucky when she was pitching. And when she popped up the ball in the second game to give Hawaii the win Ricketts was real lucky. I am really sad that you have to make excuses. Just give the props to the ones who beat you.

I agree w/ all of the comments above Re: Dunne. I think she’s maybe the best pitcher the Wahine faced all season – certainly in the top 3.

Kelsi Dunne and the Tide softball team were awesome & worthy opponents.

The UH Wahine Softball Team was more better – or is it more badder !!! 🙂 😀 😆

  610. ct May 30, 2010 8:44 pm

#600 – Thanks for the link Matt

I have no animosity towards the Alabama softball team. They were obviously disappointed and said a few off the cuff things … that’s OK … they are a great team and earned the right to be #1. But this makes me totally respect their outstanding pitcher Dunne … a real class act … wish her all the best as with the Alabama team (except against the Wahine of course) but with that attitude … I have no doubt that she will go on to do great things in life.

The problem I have is with the so-called “professional” broadcasters … the commentators and the analysts … they get paid for their services and should do their homework … and promote the sport that they are broadcasting. They should’ve been screaming at the top of there lungs … “do you believe in miracles … ” something like that … instead …they chose to go with incomplete facts … and inaccurate commentary … and sounded like someone died when the HR was hit … what’s up with that???

I have a different take on the stuff coming out from Alabama. They have nothing to be ashame of – their girls played their hearts out – just like our Wahines. Our victory could be the matter of skill and sheer determination. It also could be considered as lucky, as the ‘Bama girls may think.

Whether it is skill or plain luck, I don’t care – I’ll take it!

By the way, Morgan gave the Wahine hitters credit after she was shelled as pitcher during game 2.

    http://www.rolltide.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/052910aah.html

In fact, Dunne followed her lead after game 2 in talking about the Wahine bats. Like some of the best athletes, I’m guessing Morgan is ultra-competitive and doesn’t like to lose. I think the emotion of the end of her collegiate softball career got the best of her today which led to her unfortunate remark about a lucky hit. She may not be the narcissist that some of you portray her to be.

I agree the ESPN crew left something to be desired. The remarks referring to the Wahine as the weaker team (stated numerous times) were just uncalled for and lacked professionalism.

  626. LizKauai [iMac] m/ May 30, 2010 9:29 pm

    Just watched the dvr…

Best game since West Oahu won the Little League World Series.

In that game, I remember watching the opposing coach yell at his players. I felt the bachi instantly and knew Hawaii would win.

Today’s game bachi moment for me was when the ESPN announcers started looking ahead to Alabama in the World Series. BAM.

If Alabama had respected the Wahine, especially after playing them yesterday, they would not have that “crushing loss” feeling today. They would have been able to walk away with pride after battling a worthy opponent to the very end.

But a loss to a team they viewed as inferior is a hard pill to swallow and thus the sense of loss.

    So, WAHINE.

Stay humble, stay focused, stay healthy and keep respecting your opponents while you do what you do.
Most of all, mahalo for BELIEVING in yourselves and being STUDS out there in the ballpark.

You will go ALL – THE – WAY!!!

you ever see people, fans, go huhu over the national media. The teams won biggest in history and they crying over the silliest things. Instead they should enjoy the moment. Savor the goods things in life. But nope. I swear, I think if some of them won the mega bucks lottery they’d cry over having to dish out the 40% tax., If they listened to the announcers carefully it wasn’t as biased as they think.

  629. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 9:42 pm

Actually Alabama has a larger field which is 200 feet down the lines and 220 at center.

The Rainbow Wahine Softball field is 200 feet all around from the lines and at center.

  630. LizKauai [iMac] m/ May 30, 2010 9:44 pm

I pointed out the biased announcing in the ESPNU Facebook link after hearing the invitation to join in.

    It was VERY biased.

It gave me a whole new appreciation for Papa Leahey who calls a “both side of the ball” broadcast so well. I guess I expected that from “ESPN” booth announcers.

this is what i wrote on another site

am i’m right or wrong isn’t the point. the point is is that i write what i see, mostly without prejudices.

re-espn broadcasting of the UH softball game.

Everyone’s opinion is subjective. Some say amateurish. Some say bias. Some say insightful. Some say BS.

    I say insightful.

Both announcers in their approach provided analysis and color. They identified strengths and weaknesses of what the batters and pitchers were doing correctly and badly on both sides. Sort of what Gruden does for Monday night football in identifying what made the play work or not.

They showed replays of both team’s pitcher’s mistakes of throwing homerun pitches that were at eye level.

They said on numerous occasions of how the Hawaii batters were swinging at bad pitches. This is fact.

They also didn’t have many opportunities to toot Hawaii’s horn when 16 of the batters went down swinging, right?

Their dialogue acknowledged that Hawaii proved the skeptics wrong when it came to hitting the long ball. If they were biased would they start a debate and then end it by diluting Hawaii’s accomplishments this year? They didn’t.

Time and time they gave props to Hawaii, complementing them on how well they traveled, played on a hostile field, endured the elements and represented themselves well.

They also alluded to the Hawaii fans in attendance. And how they are a proud people. And how the fans in the islands are proud of them, too. They used words in identifying the Hawaii team like having the Aloha spirit and mana.

The broadcast team also raved about Coach Coolen being a dedicated worker in his 19 years in the program.Giving him props. They also gave props to the sailing coach for doing 20 years at UH. For good measure they said coaching in Hawaii would be a great job.

I thought the broadcasting team game Hawaii due respect.Honestly listening to them over the last two days if I were from a neutral state, I’d say I learned more from following their dialogues and debates about Hawaii than Alabama. I don’t see biases or amateurism.

Not sure about that stat you presented about a women’s and a men’s team winning WAC titles in the same season though.

I think either a combination of the two tennis programs and the Rainbow Wahine Soccer program may have also done something similar.

Huge congrats to the WAC champion baseball team too…wahoooooo!

Deepest gratitude to the men and women who have bravely served our country…remembering you all on this Memorial Day.

…I thought the broadcasting team game Hawaii due respect.

This says enough and says a lot.

Off-topic – anyone ever used priceline (name your own price) for flights? good? bad?

  660. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 11:06 pm

    Kekoa,

No no no no. “Troll” thought that the way ESPN called the action was sufficient enough for what the Rainbow Wahine Softball team deserved.

    Simple as that.

  661. Kazz ($230.00) May 30, 2010 11:09 pm

    JM,

Never did sorry to say. I used hotwire.com a few times though and the prices were some of the lowest around at that time though.

  662. PowderPuff May 30, 2010 11:15 pm

Ms. jm…I know someone who’s used priceline for hotels – seems to work really well. Not sure about flights, though…for hotels, you can name your lodging (2-star, 3-star, etc.) AND your desired price.

  663. BleedGreen808 May 30, 2010 11:16 pm

It will be nice to come home to watch the softball and baseball team play. Should be back in time for the WWS.

The late Michael Jackson would say “heal the world” 🙂

The priest at my church would say “peace be with you” 🙂

And, tsaiko al would say…nuff ready! 😆

  665. ct May 30, 2010 11:31 pm

Sorry … wasn’t going to say anything more … but I guess some people were listening to a totally different broadcast than I was … sure the broadcasters mentioned certain things in passing … but if you think that it was fact filled and objective … well … I guess you must be more insightful than I …

All I know is that the announcers got many “facts” wrong … sure the Wahine were getting dominated by a great pitcher … but there wasn’t a whole lot to compliment Alabama about until the 5th either … but they still managed to get in jabs about the size of the Wahine field and our hitting covering our fielding … and the strike zone … puhleeassse … don’t need to go on …

But the main thing is that as professional broadcasters … they did not even say that this was an “historic” win … no #1 seed has ever been defeated in a regional. No announcers getting excited at the level of the competitors and the “battle” on the field. No one screaming … going … going gone … home run … or commenting that this may be the most exciting game in this years regionals … like I said earlier … they reacted like their best friend just died. If you enjoy sports … then you gotta love the ending to the game … one way or the other … especially when you are a supposed professional broadcaster … isn’t that what you live for … exciting endings ????

PP – have used hotwire for hotels, but never used priceline for flights because they never gave me anything good. This time however,… (if it’s really true) they’re quoting around $200 less than anything else I can find. Hubby still won’t commit to exact dates, so I’m still a little stuck. Time’s running out. This trip is for mid to late July to DC. He thinks the trip will be boring.

  667. Kekoa (iPhone) May 30, 2010 11:39 pm

So Kazz, it’s all water under the proverbial bridge? Kayden. Thought this troll mama was getting on your case.

My apologies to the troll. The opinions expressed seemed a bit odd. Who would’ve thought these experts were gushing with goodwill towards anyone else except the Tide!

  668. LizKauai [iMac] m/ May 30, 2010 11:47 pm

jm2375 – I use Priceline regularly for low rates but not bidding.

Kekoa- amazing day. I was fully engaged in spiritual development programs for kids and opio and left the ballers in Kea Akua’s hands. The dvr treat this evening was sweet!!!

  669. PowderPuff May 30, 2010 11:52 pm

Wow, jm…good luck. If it is $200 less, then that’s pretty good for high season, I suppose. Do you get to choose your carrier/seats with priceline for airlines? I wouldn’t think so. You know very well that D.C. is a hard place to get to from HNL (no non-stops, except Air Force One), so any savings would help. Good luck with your trip planning…always an exciting adventure – to plan for upcoming trips.

I take one exception to your comment, I did notice some excitement from the announcers when Alabama hit their home run in the 6th, they both came across a giddy as heck.

  671. koakane June 3, 2010 11:32 am

wtf announcers got to get with the times. don’t downplay the long ball, diss the bats or the players etc. give it up and just announce the plays

  672. koakane June 3, 2010 11:36 am

every sports go thru changes in player, equipment, rules, strategies and the teams that adjust keep winning and moves on. that is why they are always in the hunt. 😈
