Tulimasealii has MCL tear
UH freshman defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii is likely to need four weeks to recover from a partially torn MCL in his right knee.
He suffered the injury while in the bottom of a pile following a one-on-one drill in yesterday’s practice.
The MRI showed a sprain; all sprains involve some degree of tearing. But his right ACL was not damaged. Tulimasealii’s injury will not require surgery.
Tulimasealii was in the rotation on the defensive line’s interior. Moses Samia and Saui Matagiese are the starters. Marcus Malepeai will have an expanded role as a defensive tackle. Dejon Allen, Calen Friel and Mike Andrade also will get reps inside.

Whoops, almost forgot: Former Utah receiver Quinton Pedroza has accepted a UH scholarship offer and arrives in town on Friday. The announcement was delayed because of the vetting process for transfers.
Pedroza was used mostly on special teams in his two years with the Utes. Exiting this past spring, he was listed as a starting receiver and top candidate on punt and kickoff returns. He was dismissed from the team this summer for violating team rules (an incident of under-age drinking).
He’s listed at 6-2, 216, although people in the know insist he’s 225. He will compete as an inside receiver after redshirting this season. Beginning in 2014, he has two years to play two seasons.

Get well soon Kennedy! Now I remember the feeling, UH football has that power to give me emotional swings during the week. Highs and lows. I guess I love UH too much. I am hopeful for your return, from one MCL sprain recoverer to another. My knee feels 100% normal now, but took some time (6+ months), feeling that leg might fall off (think cliff hanger movie and if someone was hanging on to your leg), weakness in joint (risk of further tearing), physical therapy involving knee dips, balance, pulley, lots of massages, and stationary bike. Need to strengthen the knee. But you’re young and amazing, so you’re recovery time could be a lot quicker. I want to watch you play when the team plays UNLV, but take proper precaution.

The health care provider will examine your knee. An MCL test will be done to detect looseness of the ligament. This test involves bending the knee to 25 degrees and putting pressure on the outside surface of the knee.

Treatment includes:
Applying ice to the area
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
Raising the knee above heart level
You should limit physical activity until the pain and swelling go away.
The health care provider may put you on crutches and in a brace to protect the ligament. You may also be told not to put any weight on your knee when you walk.
After a period of keeping the knee still, you will be taught exercises to strengthen and stretch the knee. Physical therapy may help you regain knee and leg strength.
Surgery is often not needed when only the MCL has been torn.
If you need surgery, it will be done using arthroscopy, through a small surgical cut.
When to Contact a Medical Professional
Call your health care provider if:
You have symptoms of MCL injury
You are being treated for MCL injury and you notice increased instability in your knee, pain or swelling after they initially faded, or your injury does not get better with time
You re-injure your knee
Prevention
Use proper techniques when playing sports or exercising. Many cases are not preventable.

Take time to heal, KT. The swelling in the area needs to reduce, but the tear doesn’t “heal”. A tear (like I have) will continue to tear, per my ortho. doc. Arthroscopic surgery can be used to clean up the edges of the tear if they “catch” in the kneecap area. I went for years with the tear before needing surgery, but I didn’t play football. (I skied)

Well, it’s definitely not worst case scenario, which is good news. Out 4 weeks puts UH in a tough spot as it’s one less big body in the DL rotation.
UH doesn’t have the depth to suffer any more DL injuries (especially at DT).
UH looks solid at LB and DB, but if the DL is too banged up like last year, its not good to be making first contact with RBs 4-5 yards past the line.

I have MCL tears in both knees from skiing, but only one (knock on wood) needed surgery when it started locking up from the ligament’s shredded edges catching under the kneecap. My chiro gave me exercises to strengthen the muscles above & below the knee to help keep the knee in line, but I sure they’ll give KT a brace to wear.

Saw the in in incident on KITV news. Kennedy and #75 locked up one on one and went down to the ground. Kennedy was the first to get up but looks like #75 held on to his leg so he jumped back down on #75. Lots of other players were around and god forbid if anyone else piled onto both players which may have caused the injury. Not a good situation but I prefer what Kekaula and the other news people are reporting 2 to 4 weeks as they talk to Chow. Bobby Curran is not informed in my humble opinion. He doesn’t attend many practices.
