Kamehameha’s Sai chooses UH

Offensive linemen Kiha Sai of Kamehameha Schools said he has accepted a football-scholarship offer from UH head coach Norm Chow.

“He asked, and I said, ‘Hell, yes,'” said Sai, who is 6 feet 4 and 315 pounds. “I want to stay home and get that Chow legacy started, with the Hawaii boys staying home.”

Sai had previously made an oral commitment to Utah. He said he was not recruited by UH until after Chow was hired on Dec. 22.

Here’s his highlight video: Kiha Sai.

Tony Tuioti was born and raised in Orange (County), but he bleeds green.

“I moved to Hawaii when I was 18 years old,” said Tuioti, a former UH defensive tackle. “Hawaii is a big part of my life. The person I’ve become today, as a father and a husband, a lot of those things happened when I was at the University of Hawaii.”

Yesterday afternoon, Norm Chow announced he was retaining Tuioti on his coaching staff.

Tuioti was recruited by Bob Wagner, played for Fred vonAppen and June Jones, and served as director of player personnel and, the past two years, defensive line coach under Greg McMackin.

Chow said he has not decided on a position for Tuioti to coach.

“I always look at myself as being a team guy,” Tuioti said. “I want to put the team first. Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to try to do to the best of my ability.”

Chow and Tuioti had never worked together. But they had a meeting in Los Angeles last week. Tuioti received strong endorsements from several in the coaching fraternity.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with coach Chow,” Tuioti said. “I want to continue to help build this program. Coach Chow talked about chasing championships, and I want to help the program continue to do that. I’m grateful he trusts me enough to be retained, and work with these young men.  I love the  program so much. I want to do everything I can to help.”

Whoops. Forgot to mention wideout Royce Pollard also will be playing in the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game.

  3. Garret January 9, 2012 5:10 am

Congratulations to Tony Tuioti! He is a great hire by Coach Chow and he will coach and recruit well for the Warriors.

Nice to hear that Tuioti has been working well with the other 2 coaches that Coach Chow hired. Given that working relationship that has already been established, it would seem that it has been no surprise that he was the coach selected to be retained…with Rolo pursuing other positions and Tuioti already working with the new coaches, it seems like they might have known the decision well before today.

More information about Colorado State’s new on-campus stadium that UH will begin playing at in a few years. I have been to a number of campuses where the on-campus stadium is looked upon this way. Trouble is, most of those on-campus stadiums were built a long time ago and space is a lot harder to come by on the Manoa campus area.

“This is more than a box,” Graham said. “This is a place that, hopefully, when any student at CSU walks past that building, they can go, ‘Wow! That’s where I go to school, and I’m really proud of that,’ and can tangibly identify with it. And, similarly, an athlete that shows up can look at that and say, ‘Man, I want to be part of that.’ And when people from Fort Collins have guests come in from New York City, they get them in the car and they drive around Fort Collins and show them all the sights, and they come to the stadium, and they say, ‘That’s our football stadium,” because we’re all proud of it. It’s a landmark that we’re all proud of.

    “That’s the vision.”

Congrats to Tony Tuioti. Smart move by Norm Chow to retain Tuioti. From I saw, I really liked his enthusiasm, teaching style, and demeanor working with the players. Nothing laid back or easygoing about him on the field. I also liked hearing that Tuioti has played a role in acclimating newly hired assistant coaches Phil Rauscher and Lewis Powell. Looking forward to seeing NC’s complete coaching staff.

  17. krump1_AKA_protector January 9, 2012 6:21 am

    ST,

So many on the previous blog as well as Garret on this one seem to be bidding farewell to Rolo.

I haven’t seen you make an announcement, but is it just a foregone conclusion if he’s interviewing at other schools?

I thought he’d keep Rolo and groom him because of his background…wonder what was the reason to not retain him? Great job on keeping Tony that leaves two polynesian coaches to get more poly’s to commit to us hopefully then UTAH.

  23. duffer January 9, 2012 6:37 am

Hope this not a insensitive question or political incorrect, but how would/does Coach Chow view Boyd Gaming as a big time contributor to UH sports?

Good news Tony is returning. Interesting that Inoke Breckterfield is not going to be back at UCLA afterall. Wonder where he goes next. He would be a good addition to the staff but that would leave us with 3 DL coaches. Tont, Inoke, Powell

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for the news Graham. Hope he’s able to hook somewhere else if he hasn’t already. Tough business.

  34. innocent observer January 9, 2012 7:32 am

really don’t like chow’s statement about chasing championships – it should be winning championships – go for the gusto. after all it is all about winning the league title or bowl games. teams number 2 to last chase championships, only number 1 wins championships, and we should aspire to be number one.

  35. Pride. January 9, 2012 7:33 am

Minutemen are putting on the FULL court press. Aggies are getting nervous.

  36. Not an Expert January 9, 2012 7:45 am

Reading what Chow stated that the coaches needs to be recruiters. Must be that is top of the totem pole in a requirement for someone to coach under Chow. He knows that no matter how good a coach can be, he will only be as good as the athletes he has on the field. As some say great athletes make good coaches look great. Good athletes make good coaches look OK. It all starts with the type of thorough breads one can have in the barn.

  37. spisskyhrad January 9, 2012 7:51 am

Smart move – Tony has a personality and a presence that breathes confidence and desire – the fact he is raising 6 kids is no small accomplishment – that guy can recruit with the best of them – the right choice.

  40. Will-I-Am January 9, 2012 8:01 am

    innocent observer,

I see what you are saying. But it is a pretty bold statement that Hawaii would be chasing the national championship. I give him credit for setting that as a goal. I don’t feel many other coach really set a goal that high. JJ and NC are the only ones that gave me the impression that their ultimate goal is not just to win the WAC. They are shooting for more.

If UH loses the in the national championship game a couple times, I will be pretty happy with that for a decade or two. haaa

#20 Kekoa : Who’s idea was it to have the 1st public meet & greet at the Hukilau? Not easily accessible to most folks, and the parking downtown SUCKS!…oh and btw, did I mention that the venue itself is smaller than my garage!

I think Kekoa got it right, but it’s the New Downtown Athletic Club. I’ll be attending this for the first and last time just to see. But if you want more to attend better get a larger and easier access location.

  65. Couch potato January 9, 2012 9:22 am

what are they looking for in the background checks? terrorist? parole violation? unpaid citations? arrest warrant? bad credit? illegal immigrant? expired work visa?

  66. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2012 9:26 am

Yes, background checks are the only thing holding up the announcements.

At the old Advertiser, we announced that a person was going to be joining us, pending a drug test. Never saw that person again.

Then a week later, we announced another person would be joining us. Again, pending a drug test. And we never saw that person again, either.

  69. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2012 9:31 am

We took drug tests when we joined the Star-Advertiser. The hardest part was peeing into a cup, and then stopping.

Of course, manure-disturber “Ferd” told me I needed to supply a lot of urine so I had to drink a lot of water. Turns out, not so.

The biggest concern, though, is that they’ll find some old-man ailment.

  70. Couch potato January 9, 2012 9:35 am

    ahhhh, blog test.

you should eat asparagus before a urine test.

  71. Bugaz January 9, 2012 9:39 am

  74. Bowwar January 9, 2012 9:45 am

Congrats to Tuioti, he was a “safe” retention by Chow and leaves some form of continuity especially with any residual recruiting from the previous staff to the new staff. Also, Tuioti can probably give an assessment of existing players and where they possibly might fit in Chows’ offensive and defensive schemes. Too bad about Rolo…I think Chow want’s to keep his hands on the offense just like MACK/Mouse, so he wouldn’t be able to truly run the offense as desired. Wish Chow would make it official and get it over with, so Rolo can move on.

  75. Couch potato January 9, 2012 9:45 am

Yale: We hear that UConn defensive coordinator Don Brown has accepted the head coaching position at Yale. Have not confirmed. Will update. (Football Scoop 1/9/12)

Wonder if the new coach has to interview all of the coaches on the 2011 staff to let them know if they will be retained or not? Former Hawaii coach Ikaika Malloe was the DC there, and may be looking for a job.

  88. PolyMom January 9, 2012 10:17 am

    Mazel to Coach Tony!

@Pride if I am not mistaken the internship program with the JETS that Tony was attending was a camp for Coaches of Color. You know what I mean? We have been working on Letters of Recommendation all week last week for several young Poly Coaches who would like to be invited to one of these camps. My husband has been banging the phones to get our Poly Coaches in the doors.

@ Stephen Tsai…the drug test at work have saved a life or two. In my union you have to pee to work whenever they feel like it. Two of my co workers it was discovered had early signs of bladder cancer. The drug test literally saved their lives. Bladder cancer is a hard to detect. Most MEN hate going to the Doctors.

As Director of Player Personnel….and not as coach….his first 2 years, Tuioti could not actively recruit.

Whoever ends up as the Recruiting Coordinator (not Director of Player Personnel) must be a coach….and therefore is allowed to recruit.

  105. kapakahi January 9, 2012 11:04 am

With Inoke Breckterfield apparently now leaving UCLA staff, that might open recruiting up for Lakalaka and Fairbairn….since Breckterfield was their recruiting contact with Bruins.

I hope they keep Coach Ikaika. Dropped off care package this past summer to his office. Missed the GAME this past year.

Did you go to Yale? I thought that you attended USC?

Bugaz – #102 – all GAs must be graduate students at UH in a degree program.

  109. madeinhawaii January 9, 2012 11:10 am

    808Bowler..

For the most part, I don’t think the Recruiting Coordinator actually initiates initial contact with recruits — at least at Manoa. He may send out a feeder (mailer) to see if there is any interest, though. He is the one who coordinates the recruiting ‘process’. He would be in charge of breaking down how many scholarships that the school has in a particular year, figure out how many players they want to take at certain positions, determine what coaches will be traveling where, and the many other aspects of the recruiting process. The reason that football has a recruiting coordinator. By taking care of and coordinating all the processes, the coaches can put the vast majority of their focus and energies into their coaching jobs.

  110. madeinhawaii January 9, 2012 11:11 am

    Kapakahi,

ah.. maybe I have the two confused… do we have both?

  111. Bugaz January 9, 2012 11:12 am

2 GAs only and long hours while still attending classes. Doorstep to coaching career. Usually 2 years but NCAA allows for three.

  118. kapakahi January 9, 2012 11:19 am

Under Mack, the Director of Player Personnel position was created with salary paid by Na Koa….but no UH assistant coach was ever assigned the title & responsibility as the Recruiting Coordinator.

As a non-coach, the Director of Player Personnel took care of the all the logistics (the stuff you mentioned) associated with recruiting but could not actively participate in the recruiting process…since must be coach to do so.

i’ve seen that jeffrey coprich dvd awhile back. he played for a lower tier school and that may have been the reason he had been under the radar all this time. kind of like the ryan grice-mullen story.

he just jumps out of the video. if he chooses hawaii, which i think he will.

i’d give him at least two nicknames to start.

    jeffrey “sanders” coprich

    jeffrey “broke yo’ ankles” coprich

    jeffrey “jet” coprich

i’ll bet tommui lunch that he becomes a warrior. (a burger perhaps?)

Report: Three interviewed for Aggies offensive coordinator position

A report from footballscoop.com has New Mexico State University interviewing three men for the Aggies offensive coordinator position in football.

The three names in the report: former Hawaii offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich; former Colorado State head coach Steve Fairchild; former Washington State offensive coordinator Todd Sturdy.

The Cruces Sports Blog had two of these names when speculating on possible coordinator candidates last month. Click here for that list.

Aggie head coach DeWayne Walker is currently at the American Football Coaches National Convention in San Antonio, Texas, an event that runs through Wednesday.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Congratulations to ST for the honorarium. I am a bit confused about Dave Vinton, I thought he was more a sports director than broadcaster with OC. I guess he was nominated by OC.

With ST, although he primarily covers the UH football beat, his stories develop the interest in Hawaii sports overall. This blog is testament to his influence, as a writer and blog host. His is the only SA blog that generates more posts, and consequently more spam, than any other and probably all SA blogs combined! He has facilitated job security for the SA IT staff by himself!? U sure know how to tease us with the surprise coaching prospect. Hope Stormin’ Norman can pull it off.

Jon Gruden? Jeff Fisher? Jack Del Rio? Adam Rita? Duane Akina? Pat Hill?

    Burgers?

The Counter at Kahala Mall… quality of ingredients and talk about customization…

Jack In the Box > Wendy’s

  228. al January 9, 2012 2:18 pm

aiig…in jt turner’s case, it is when will he come?

if he comes this semester, tomw, he’ll face tougher academic challenges to be eligible in the fall.

    or

he could go back to jc and get it done in an easier fashion and be here in the fall as well.

however, should he take the latter route he becomes a “free agent” once again.

  229. Couch potato January 9, 2012 2:18 pm

    al, no they don’t.

  230. mikey January 9, 2012 2:19 pm

#219 al: rolo has several offers at oc coordinator. it is a matter of how far he is willing to travel from home/hawaii.

If I was rolo I go to New Mexico State since he will have another Mule to work with at QB and will be much warmer than up north.

okay, i’ll say it. rolo has offers from the north american continent west of the mississippi and east of the mississippi.

    Minute By Minute lyrics

Hey, don’t worry, I’ve been lied to

I’ve been here many times before

Girl don’t you worry, I know where I stand

I don’t need this love, I don’t need your hand

I know I could turn, blink, and you’d be gone

Then I must be prepared any time to carry on, but

    (chorus)

(Minute by minute by minute by minute)

    I keep holding on

    Oh, I keep holding on

(Minute by minute by minute by minute)

    I keep holding on

Always been one of my favorite songs.

  255. Kevin January 9, 2012 2:37 pm

    *Random Thought*

If I were Roger Goodell, I’d start fixing games to ensure Denver into the Superbowl.

Green Bay is almost a lock.

Denver is where the money in jersey sales and ratings are at and the NFL is nothing more than a business sooo… do the right thing and give the people what they want in hype and merchandise.

Then watch the champ Aaron Rogers show the 700 Club’s boy how the QB position is played… but until then.. Set the stage like a good promoter should.

  256. kev-1 January 9, 2012 2:38 pm

Although they don’t have much in them and are pretty basic, I still LOVE the BBQ Cheeseburger Deluxe (TWO TIMES) burgers from St. Louis Drive In. Awww man . . . take me back.

  257. al January 9, 2012 2:39 pm

nmsu is on the verge of losing its fbs status. it is due to their attendance numbers. sjsu was in that predicament a few years back and will soon be on the bubble as well.

it was that plight that really made the uhad wake up and smell the coffee as our numbers were plummeting towards those very same issues.

why not go to somewhere there is new money to build rather the armpit of fbs football?

  258. Ipu Man January 9, 2012 2:39 pm

  276. Pride. January 9, 2012 2:57 pm

The story of how Alabama became associated with “elephant” goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade had assembled a great football team.

On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the Alabama-Mississippi game he had witnessed in Tuscaloosa four days earlier. Strupper wrote, “That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes.

“Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of ground.

“At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity.

“It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size.”

Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as “Red Elephants,” the color referring to the crimson jerseys.

The 1930 team posted an overall 10-0 record. It shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217. The “Red Elephants” rolled over Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl and were declared National Champions.

At Inn & Out they hand cut the fries to order.

  279. VonAppen January 9, 2012 3:03 pm

    Burger King’s The Burger – about $186

Hot on the heels of Wall Street Burger, surprisingly enough, is Burger King. Yes, this monolithic fast food giant has decided to live up to its name by producing the world’s most expensive burger. Simply called “The Burger,” this costly hamburger is available only at a West London branch of the restaurant. Luckily for those among you who’ll be taking your private jets to Burger King for lunch, The Burger can be pre-ordered by phone so you needn’t wait.

The world’s most expensive hamburger is made, as usual, with Wagyu beef. It is also decked with white truffles, onion tempura prepared in Cristal champagne and some of Spain’s finest Pata Negra ham. All of this is presented in an Iranian saffron and truffle bun.

  280. kapakahi January 9, 2012 3:08 pm

    #279 (mikey),

FYI….In-N-Out is privately owned family business…just like The Original Tommy’s….and hasn’t yet sold any franchises….so I wouldn’t expect them to move out here anytime soon.

  281. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:13 pm

in-n-out uses only fresh beef and would be difficult and not cost effective getting them to Hawaii in a timely manner. that’s why no mo one here.

  282. kev-1 January 9, 2012 3:15 pm

This looks like it is going to be one hell of a football game.

  283. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:15 pm

Not saying the NFL games ARE fixed, saying it CAN be.

Anything on television that makes that kind of money can be arranged if the need be.

There is always a first time for everything. A call here and a call there by the refs or replay offical and viola!!!

    It can be done.

Denver vs Green Bay for the silver football = money in the bank. It’s the right business decision. Goodell should do everything in his power to ensure that.

  284. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:17 pm

right business decision vs. integrity of the game. hmmmmmmm.

  285. kev-1 January 9, 2012 3:20 pm

I think SF getting to the Super Bowl would be pretty good for the NFL too.

  286. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:23 pm

    Integrity of the game?????????

Has anyone paid attention to the professional sports headlines and issues over the last few years?

The college game had whatever integrity was left and the BCS nonsense is about killing that completely.

Im not saying the business needs to “change” because it’s stupid and naïve to think it will change, so we’re just gonna go with it for what it is and more people should see it for what it is.

I think pure football fans still believe the NFL holds some kind of true aspect of athletic competition, yet they are the same ones debating and justifying insane salaries and supporting holdouts from a player or owners perspective.

That’s fine if you wanna do that, but personally those same fans should acknowledge that business comes first in the NFL, then somewhere in there is the game of football.

  287. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:24 pm

The NFL game today IS business, the right business decision IS right for the game today.

It is what it is because they made it that way because we as a sports society MADE it that way.

  288. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:24 pm

all the hard work the players put into the game is thrown away from some dumb business decision?

  289. kev-1 January 9, 2012 3:25 pm

Case and point . . . Colts were losing everygame and then went on a mini-streak. All of a sudden, when last place was no longer a gimme (and people probably started betting on them again), they started losing again. Business.

  290. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:27 pm

so you saying if your favorite Wahine softball team puts in the hours to train, work hard, play the game as best they can and gets it all thrown away because of some collusion between the NCAA and the umpires, is okay?

  291. mikey January 9, 2012 3:28 pm

And it’s BCS Game time order your Inn and Out now!

  292. kev-1 January 9, 2012 3:28 pm

Jefferson is losing his composure. First he drops the snap and yells at the center. Replay looked like he just pulled out too quick. And now he’s on the sideline dropping F bombs all over the place. Be cool man! Game just started.

  293. Iwonderwhytheyhateme January 9, 2012 3:29 pm

    Roll Tide!

  294. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:31 pm

    Happens all the time.

Ratings increase, sponsorship to the NFL increases, more $$$$ comes in, push Tebow to the moon and make him a superstar unlike no other…

Use him. I mean the NFL has had so many issues with players gaining bad press that someone like Tebow brings in a fresh look for many so why not use it to the NFL’s advantage? Create a new fan base that was previously disenchanted therefore producing more willing wallets.

More money to spread out, not just for the Denver franchise, but for NFL programming, and more kala for all involved including the players league-wide.

How many, JUST how many of these NFLers that don’t make the playoffs or Superbowl will sleep sleepless nights after coming home to their elaborte estates and heavy incomes????

    Seriously?

More power to them, they get to make the kind of living we can’t by playing a sport.

  295. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:33 pm

    Couch Potato,

REALLY? The college softball game in compairison to what I’m talking about the professional juggarnaut that is the National Football League?

Read what I’m saying about what is right in front of EVERYBODY’S eyes about pro football.

  296. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:33 pm

business is business but to have officials decide a game because the commish says who should be the winner is simply stupid.

  297. Kevin January 9, 2012 3:34 pm

FACT = NFL is BIG BIG business.

FACT = Women’s Division One College Softball is not BIG BIG business.

Trying to develop an argument on these two alone is only an attempt to shake lychee from a coconut tree.

  298. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:35 pm

Kevin, you did mention the college game and in principle it’s the same thing. you are playing with the teams passion and goals. why then play the game if the outcome is already decided?

The thing is, I do not hold the NFL in the same light as you do as you think there is still some kind of purity about football and the game itself in the NFL.

I think and I firmly believe the NFL is a business FIRST amongst everything else.

That’s the difference between you and I.

  301. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:38 pm

i’m talking about the people who play the game, why take away something they work so hard for? i played the sport and many others. if i ever found out that the games i played was rigged i would be pissed and …

  302. Couch potato January 9, 2012 3:40 pm

To which you followed up with this:

    Couch potato:

    January 9th, 2012 at 3:27 pm

so you saying if your favorite Wahine softball team puts in the hours to train, work hard, play the game as best they can and gets it all thrown away because of some collusion between the NCAA and the umpires, is okay?

So my question is why bring up softball in the NCAA? It’s a low revenue and in some places like UH, it’s non-revenue???

AGAIN, I’m talking about the NFL.

The bottom line is you keep thinking the NFL is still about just football.

I’m saying it’s not. After years and years of contract holdouts when a millionaire is not satisfied with his current fleet of cars and wants more… after stalemates between owners and players bickering about who gets what share of the BILLIONS leaving fans and arena staff employees in the lurch…. after all that, try tell me that the NFL is NOT a BUSINESS FIRST.

While the college game is slowly losing that other sports on the college level still have that “purity” you think the NFL has in some degree. I’m saying it’s DEAD in the NFL and while college football is close to losing it completely, there is still some element of “purity” left.

Im not apologizing in BELIEVING the NFL should set up the next Superbowl to make sure it’s Denver and Green Bay simply because that’s what a business should do since that is the big money match up.

When the rich have their own majority in the Supreme Court you know the fix is in and you’re living in a world where the average person goes to prison for minor things and the rich can do anything short of murdering a person on camera and not be worried in the least about being arrested.tera gold

  316. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:31 pm

OK St wouldna shutout LSU at halftime

  317. Ipu Man January 9, 2012 4:33 pm

D1shima, if OK state was playing for the BCS championship,

who would be their opponent, Bama or Tide?

And what would the score be at halftime?

It would have been better to be OK state and Oregon or Boise State…

  318. Abunai January 9, 2012 4:33 pm

#236 al? Who else is visiting this weekend?

  319. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:35 pm

    What woulda DQ’d LSU?

  320. mcb January 9, 2012 4:36 pm

#320 – maybe, but there would have probably been a touchdown or two somewhere along the way.

  321. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:37 pm

I wish Hawaii could afford a color-coordinated fold-up chair for its Baton Twirler. 🙄

  322. Ipu Man January 9, 2012 4:37 pm

Ducks halftime score woulda been 35 to Tide’s 21…

  323. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:40 pm

    mcb,

Prolly true but I doubt that the Cowboys woulda scored any of them

  324. mcb January 9, 2012 4:41 pm

#327 – well LSU’s defense doesn’t look like its stopping anything, so I beg to differ.

  325. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:42 pm

…based on the 13 the Dux scored in the first half vs LSU?

  326. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:43 pm

If so, I apologise deeply. Score 1 for D1.

  330. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:46 pm

    Roll Tide = ‘Bama

  331. d1shima January 9, 2012 4:46 pm

    Geaux Tigers = LSU

  332. mcb January 9, 2012 4:48 pm

    #333 the ducks played LSU

#330 – Wheeden is a better passing QB than Mccarron who has already thrown for 156 yards.

  333. bigislandkurt January 9, 2012 4:50 pm

    Got Burgers?

Ma’ona Lunch counter in Hilo. Tex Drive Inn in Honoka’a too. Ma’oana all fresh ingredients. Tex, make their fresh bread. Both places make great burgers. Plenny MEAT! Hilo Burger joint also make a pretty good samich.

On the continent? I’ve been to 5 guys. And yes, it meets the hype. Great burger and fries combo. I have not been to an A&W in years. But I remember those burgers were pretty darn good — greeeeezy and ono. And was always good to wash it down with some cold, fresh root beer.

BCS game is a clinic on field goals.

  337. d1shima January 9, 2012 5:02 pm

Now ‘Bama has 200+ yards passing but still no TD’s. The Tide offense is not a slouch; the Bengal Tigers’ D is that good (equalled by ‘Bama’s).

I’m just saying they got it right….these are the two best teams in CFB this season.

  338. truegreen January 9, 2012 5:04 pm

    Two best teams? Yeah right…

  339. truegreen January 9, 2012 5:05 pm

  347. mcb January 9, 2012 5:20 pm

    HELL YES !!!

Let’s start a grass roots movement on how to move the program forward: Ideas?

This would be done on your time no pay for the love of UH Football and keeping the program “alive and moving forward”…”chasing championships”!!

    example:

-set up a call center to call past season ticket holders and get them to renew.

    – People walking around the stadium parking lot taking donations every week.

-Playing a song during the game like Wisconsin plays “Jump Around” and all thier fans jump.

-Playing music during the game like they did for brief minute in the BYU game.

    Any thoughts?

  403. Garret January 9, 2012 7:01 pm

Craig Thompson doesn’t seem to think that the MWC will get the AQ waiver for 2012 and 2013. That is too bad because it appears that the AQ system will end after that and the new system might exclude the MWC.

The issue of whether the Mountain West gains automatic qualifying status for the next two seasons will not be addressed anytime soon. Thompson said too many of the 12 BCS Presidential Oversight Committee are out of pocket to vote on the matter.

The Mountain West is asking for a waiver to be included in the BCS on a temporary basis in the last two years of the current rotation in 2012 and 2013. The conference has attained some of the benchmarks set for BCS inclusion, but not all. The Mountain West would need nine of 12 votes.

“I’m not overly optimistic,” Thompson said.

Looking back at the bowl season:

    Big 12: 6-2, including 3-0 against the Pac-12

SEC: 6-3, 1 loss in the national title game, 1 loss in OT, and Vandy lost

CUSA: 4-1, only loss was to BYU by 3 points. They beat 2 AQ schools, but the winners of those games (Houston, SMU) will soon be in the Big East

MAC: 4-1, 2-0 vs. MWC, only loss was by 5 points to the Big 10

Big East: 3-2, but Pitt’s loss is really a loss for the ACC and the Houston/SMU/BSU wins were from schools joining them soon

Big 10: 4-6, 2 of their wins were in OT

MWC: 2-3, both teams that won (TCU, BSU) are leaving

    Pac-12: 2-5

ACC: 2-6, not counting Pitt’s loss

    Sun Belt: 1-2

WAC: 0-3, not the way to try to earn respect.

    Howzit Everybody,

Solidly played NC game. Congrads to Uncle Gus (George Gussman) on his officiating assignment.

I agree that they put the two best teams in the NC game. If it was any other team against these two teams, it would have been a blowout, plain and simple.

  412. Buffoman January 9, 2012 7:41 pm

I am very interested to see who the o-line coach would be and his credentials. That would be key, in my opinion to the possible early and ongoing success of the new team.

Watching the Bama-LSU game was exciting to me. Bama’s defense is just unbelievable. What they say is true, offense may fill seats but defense wins championships. I don’t think any of the other, lower, top tier wannabes could score on Bama tonight. They were fired up and ready to play.

Can we also have that for our Warriors?

    Nice recruit pickup!

Nice to have Tuioti on staff!

Congrats to Pollard and Happy Birthday to the birthday kids.

    Burgers…Can’t beat the homemade kine!

Kazz – I think what Couch potato is saying is no matter what sport…no matter what organization…no matter what league…you just don’t throw games to make a better match-up.

Knowing the time I put in as a player as well as many on here who have played competitive sports for their alma mater(s) you just don’t cheat to get a desired result. Also looking back at my kids and also the kids of our fellow bloggers and seeing the time and effort they put in to play the sports they love I would not appreciate it if I knew their games were fixed.

I will never condone throwing a game to benefit someones pocket. Like Couch potato said, that ruins the integrity of the game for the players.

People who know me know that I am a competitive person and I hate to lose. But someone has to lose and if they do lose I hope it’s not because refs, umpires, or officials blew calls on purpose.

If you want to predetermine winners in the NFL then you may as well run it like the WWE.

  417. BigHiloFan2 January 9, 2012 7:52 pm

  418. Buffoman January 9, 2012 7:53 pm

418 no doubt about that. Just anxious to see what our bigs will be doing in the trenches. I remember watching our first game under JJ and the team was warming up just under our end zone section. I could not help but notice the difference in footwork, and the crispness of the o-line. It was a BIG difference from the year before.

I’d like to believe we’ll be equally pleasantly surprised when Coach Chow implements his schemes.

  419. kama krab January 9, 2012 7:53 pm

Hey DPK! You finished reading all those books or what? I got more for you to read.

    #413 – Keoniana

I sure hope Sua Cravens is better than Siaki. To be honest, his play & his attitude were a complete bust in 2011.

On a much more positive note, I am SO jacked at the first two recruits Norm Chow has landed. I know it’s only “verbal” right now, but dang it’s so nice to read / hear “local boys” committing to the “local” team.

I saw hi-lites of Kiha Sai on KITV (Kekaula), and I had no idea he was such a beast.

welcome to the warriors kiha! another awesome pickup from the norm.

i hope the story on this commitment makes it to the front page of the sports section tomorrow. show all the local boys that staying home puts you in the spot light and that the state will now be backing you up.

  439. al January 9, 2012 8:38 pm

so far this has been a helluva start in the short few weeks since chow time first started.

he has shown in a short time that if you get the right attitude, contacts, staff, and the desire to get off of your butt, amazing results are ahead. of course one needs the right ability to “sell” the program.

i believe there are a few more commits already. however, you don’t become the sportwriter of the year by shooting all of your marbles at once. a headline a day sells more papers in the long run.

…after all these are exciting times.

Fantastic recruit in Sai. Let him be the first domino of local boys staying home.

Nobody appreciates a good defensive display anymore. Yahoo homepage calls the game a dud. Ummmm. . . . dud I think not. That was a defensive display.

Alabama lost the first game because of 4 missed field goals (I believe), not because LSU was the better team (my opinion).

Alabama the clear #1 in my mind.

  449. mikesmith January 9, 2012 9:10 pm

    428. Al

This goes to show you that height and size matters in big time D1 football. Norm has been there for years and knows what it takes. He is looking for a specific criteria in size especially on the O and D lines. Unfortunately a lot of good players and their parents here in Hawaii will realize this is a wake up call. The kid here who is tuff but 5-9, 5-10 on the O-line will not be needed or wanted by Coach Chow at the University of Hawaii. Wake up call. The opportunities will be reserved for those players that have the skill and are 6-3 and up on the LOS and 6ft to 6-3 at LB, 5-10 to 6-1 at DB, 6-1 to 6-3 at WR, 6-3 to 6-6 at TE, 5-10 to 6-1 at RB, 6-2 to 6-4 at QB. But that is just a rough Idea I am sure there are diamonds in the ruff and exceptions to the rule. But 5-10 Olineman, there is no place for you in the Norm Chow Pro style power game.

  450. Bugaz January 9, 2012 9:12 pm

  453. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:19 pm

I just realized that the upcoming football season will actually give us a chance to see what our RB’s can really do. In the RnS, they basically only ran on the draw, which is a lot different out of the gun. The linemen always had to sell the pass. The RB’s never really had the opportunity show what they can do with big linemen creating running lanes.

    I’m excited about that.

  454. PowderPuff January 9, 2012 9:24 pm

Holy smokes….Kiha and Leo on the same line?!?! Wow….I can’t wait until February 1. Awesome!!! And congratulations, ST on being named Sportswriter of the Year. Well deserved!!!

  460. whitey January 9, 2012 9:43 pm

tonight’s game was not a national championship game and lsu coaching staff sucks. i had no bets on the game, but i expected this to be a good solid football game. instead, it was a DUD!!!!!

  461. Pride. January 9, 2012 9:47 pm

I think that Kiha Sai and DeForest Buckner need to resume their battle on the grass field at UH this summer. Man, those two guys were going at it on the video.

  462. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:50 pm

Come on whitey, a dud? . . . really? That was a physical, defensive ball game. If anything, I think LSU should have given Jarrett Lee a chance to play. Afterall, all he did wasgot win the first half of the season for LSU. But he got bit by the interception bug and never got his chance again. Doesn’t really seem fair, especially since Jefferson was very ineffective tonight.

But I disagree with the dud assessment. Alabama folks, is really that good. And so is LSU’s defense. Kept Bama out of the endzone all night but once. I also think Alabama was only penalized once during the entire game. That is disciplined, hard nosed football.

  463. Refugio Bearse January 9, 2012 9:50 pm

Don’t forget the two tiered justice system we have in this country as well. When the rich have their own majority in the Supreme Court you know the fix is in and you’re living in a world where the average person goes to prison for minor things and the rich can do anything short of murdering a person on camera and not be worried in the least about being arrested.wow gold

  464. Eric January 9, 2012 9:50 pm

Kiha Sai sounds like a very promising recruit.

Congrats ST on your award. Kinda diminishes the award when Dave Vinton is the Sportscaster of the Year, really???

  465. whitey January 9, 2012 9:51 pm

many made fun of hawaii’s loss in the sugar bowl, but tonights game was a total joke. this game was 10 times worse than hawaii’s loss to georgia. lsu or losers couldn’t even make a first down in a quarter and half, no score, and hardly ever made it pass the 50 yds line.

  466. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:51 pm

I think “wasgot” in my previous post is supposed to be “was go out and”

  467. Pride. January 9, 2012 9:52 pm

Wouldn’t mind seeing Leo Koloamatangi and Luke Kaumatule going at it in practice also. It’d be fun to watch all of the bear cubs getting after each other.

Gotta get Matt Sparks and Shane Brostek to join in on the fun too.

  468. whitey January 9, 2012 9:52 pm

kev-1, you have your opinion I have mine, and lsu sucks.

  469. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:54 pm

WHAT?????? Are you kidding me? You are seriously going to compare that to the Sugar Bowl with UH and Georgia? Wow. I don’t even know what to say. You don’t think any of that has to do with Alabama’s defense?

That’s okay. Your opinion I guess.

  470. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:55 pm

    That’s cool.

  471. homey ℞ January 9, 2012 9:55 pm

whitey – Dud for LSU, they didn’t show up only because Alabama didn’t let them. Awesome defensive game if you are into that kind of stuff and I’m into that kind of stuff. They imposed their will over LSU.

  472. whitey January 9, 2012 9:56 pm

like i said you have your opinion i have mine.

  473. kev-1 January 9, 2012 9:58 pm

Now I would like to see Alabama vs Oklahoma St. I would love to see a high powered pass attack against that D. I still think Bama would win, but it has a chance to be a really good game.

  474. whitey January 9, 2012 10:01 pm

i neva said anything about alabama’s defense, all i said was that lsu sucks. why did the tv keep showing the second team qb of lsu when their first team qb was totally not in the game??? this is not the nfl, if one is not helping the team, pull him out, talk to him and explain why and if he understands, put him back in, but no, lsu kept thinking that it could make a game of it without changes. sound familiar????

  475. kev-1 January 9, 2012 10:04 pm

Now I agree with you there whitey. Jefferson’s head wasn’t in the game from the very beginning. You could see he was overly emotional about stuff. Snapping at teammates and swearing, etc. They should have made a change, that’s for sure. Heck, I don’t think Jefferson should have even gotten back the job to begin with.

  476. homey ℞ January 9, 2012 10:06 pm

Yep. Alabama made LSU look sucky. Can’t take anything away from LSU though since the did have a good season leading up to this game. Can’t have a good game every game.

  477. madeinhawaii January 9, 2012 10:16 pm

So.. did someone answer my question? What we saw in the NC game.. was that Pro-Style football? What we will see come next season?

  478. whitey January 9, 2012 10:16 pm

believe it or not, i thought lsu was going to beat alabama because of their success during the regular season and winning their conference championship, plus they had over a month to prepare for this game. One game only, over one month to prepare. Even when they were down 9-0 at the half, i still felt they would correct their offensive and defensive alignments, but no, they stayed in the same mode and that is why the coaching staff sucks.

  479. whitey January 9, 2012 10:20 pm

and by the way, it wasn’t only the alabama defense, their offense was very good and they showed that by having a month to prepare they were ready. i give coach saban credit for game prep and execution.

  480. whitey January 9, 2012 10:22 pm

now that da warriors have a new coaching staff and we start preparing for another season, i hope they learned or re-learned from this game and they avoid getting into the same game situation as losers.

  481. 1sportsfan January 9, 2012 10:24 pm

Alabama’s defense looked awfully good, a “shut down” defense. Like many of the upper tier teams, the speed and talent, size included, shows up in their four and five star recruits for both teams. The offense did not seem as prolific and lends credence to the say “Defense wins championships”. This is the standard that Chow is use to but getting those recruits will be a major, major challenge.

  482. sports for fun January 9, 2012 10:24 pm

Wholly smokes!! Watched the Sia video. Sia owned that Oregon recruit BIG TIME!! He has a mean streak and finishes his blocks well…at least from what I saw on the video.

  483. truegreen January 9, 2012 10:28 pm

Alabama’s defense is good, no doubt. But it’s not like they were tested in this game.

I would have loved to see if they could actually handle a great offense like Oklahoma St. or Oregon. Or even Boise St. or Houston, which the BCS will never let happen in a billion years even in years that they might deserve it.

Only chance for Hawaii is to get in the Pac-x. Maybe get chance? At least Coach Chow has us dreaming big again…

  484. Bryson January 9, 2012 10:30 pm

Defense definetly wins Championships…Bama’s D was as good as advertised…

    Also:

-When I pay 60.00 for a four hour PPV, it lasts four hours.

-When I pay out $1,450.00 to attend their version of the Superbowl (Wrestlemania), the WWE ensures all their 80,000+ fans that when you buy a ticket, you can actually get the seat you paid for and won’t ask you to watch the game in the parking lot.

  489. d1shima January 9, 2012 10:56 pm

    Holy Smokes!

I love those teams but Oregon and B$-You are at a totally different level from the two teams who played tonight. LSU throttled UofO in Week 1 and the Dux couldn’t deal with SC’s speed and strength. I wouldn’t expect the Donks to be able to come up to that level either.

How can anyone say that either team had a bad offense? Aside from the two games they played against each other they both averaged about 40 ppg!

And again, LSU beat eight Top 25 teams in the regular season including a #2 and two #3 ranked teams, including two at neutral sites and three on the road. (‘Bama beat 5 Top 25 teams, 3 on the road and one at neutral site)

That ‘Bama, arguably, out-played LSU twice this season to me, says these two were far and away the best two teams this year.

its too bad had some owees that prevented him from making the final cut with the eagles. had he been in top shape he would still be playing on sundays.

  501. truegreen January 10, 2012 12:17 am

Didn’t say the offenses were bad, just that there were much better ones out there this year and the ONLY objective way to prove it is on the field. Everything else is just subjective. After all, Oregon did score more against LSU in one game than Alabama did against them in two games combined.

In EVERY other sport it doesn’t matter who’s “better”. It only matters who wins. Not always the same thing. The “better” team doesn’t always win. It’s about matchups, not talent alone. Just watch March Madness. That’s why they decide by actually playing the game…unless you’re the B(C)S of course…

Maybe I should explain the motivation behind my passion which I would hope you share. I dream of Hawaii making it to the title game in my lifetime. In basketball, it’s possible. In football, as it stands, not possible. Because no matter how good they are, they will never get the chance.

Remember, in 2009 an undefeated Utah team played in the Sugar Bowl against a one-loss Alabama team that had spent several weeks ranked #1. Of course Alabama was obviously far and away the better team right? But Utah blew them out. You never know. All I’m saying is that it deserves to be decided on the field.

Well Al, Kiha Sai, Matt Sparks, and Shane Brostek will all be good ball players in my opinion. Would be great to see all three of those guys lining up next to Kolomatangi and Adams. There’s another Kolomatangi that’s still available. 6’3″ 275 pound Viliami Koloamatangi out of Arizona would be a nice get.

  503. al January 10, 2012 12:27 am

also heard that there is a 6’7″ koloamatangi who is a tight end.

I like how Coach Chow is doing the announcements. If he puts da names of the recruits out there, then the Pac 12 teams gonna try scoop up our guys. I liked what I read about Alabama and LSU, that they have a history of keeping their homey top recruits at home.

I like how Coach Chow is trying to do the same for us.

Go Coach Chow. Show the bruddaz how smart you really are. You’re doing great in the keep the trap shut department!

    Go Warriors!

  524. Da Punchbowl Kid January 10, 2012 6:46 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

“Das about 1,000 more fans at the game from da Sai side of da family. Only going get 700 fans from da Kenoi side of da family, cause da air fare stay expensive for come from da Big, I mean Hawai’i Island.”

    Kiha!!! Wihaaaaaa!!!

I spoke to Kiha’s Pops about a month ago and Utah sounded like a lock for his son. Its great news that Kiha’s staying home.

Twenty something years ago when Kiha’s parents, Keanu and Kina were getting together, I told them both that any boys they had were going to be stallions! Sure enough both sons are bruisers, with brains to match! Grampa Kenoi is huge, too!

This is a great get for UH football! Kiha sure looks like his uncle Billy in that pic. If the honorable Mayor Kenoi is reading, I mean that in the best way. 😉

Come on man . . . how do you bust Snoop Dog for a couple of joints? That’s like busting a diabetic for carrying around syringes. If you’re going to arrest Snoop for possession of marijuana, you might as well arrest him everytime you see him.
